A review says this Japanese Restaurant beats most of the others in the Bay Area, and I feel the same. Had a bento combo of sashimi, fried shrimp and toriyaki, and it was great. Loved their salad and rice. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. Complimentary water, cold tea and hot tea are available by self service.
Perfect hole in the wall Japanese spot that we love. My husband and I seek out places like these and this specific one hit the ball out of the park. Great quality such friendly service and such extensive menu options. We ordered up a storm from the sashimi plate, miso soups (love the different size options), udon soup, hand rolls, furo maki, and so much more. The cashiers are so sweet and helpful. The menu is quite extensive and can be a little overwhelming and they took the time to help us figure out exactly what to order based on what we described we liked.
What a find! Perfect for our family that prefers to eat outside at local parks. They only serve take out. The menu is extensive and we probably got carried away ordering but everything we got was so good. There were many items on the menu you wouldn’t normally see at a Japanese restaurant. The ingredients were fresh. The portion sizes were generous and the flavors were spot on. Take the time to also look at the snacks/desserts they have in the store. I wish we had made to order bentos closer to home. We even got treated to a rainbow at nearby Window on the Bay Park.
Little hidden gem, very comfortable Japanese food, the dragon roll tastes so good.
Absolutely delicious, the lunch specials were the perfect amount of food, not too much but filling and delicious! Free hot and cold tea was lovely and everyone was so thoughtful and accommodating. Simply no better sushi to have in this town!
Go for the excellent Japanese food prepared by knowledgeable chefs. Service was friendly and prompt. I eat here whenever I’m in town. If you like Japanese food you will like Ocean Sushi Deli. Good value for the $$.
I don't get to visit Monterey often - BUT when I do, I make Damn sure to eat a big meal at Ocean Sushi Deli. I was lucky enough to live in Japan for a few years when I was a younger man. This place is LeGiT. I can feel, smell and most importantly, Taste authentic Japanese flavors. I LOVE THIS PLACE. if you haven't been, you owe it to yourself and the ones you love to go. PEACE to All.
Good, fresh food here. The menu is reasonably priced. I got the unagi donburi (grilled bbq eel over white rice). It was really good. If you’re a fan of eel, go for this if it’s available. We also had a yakisoba, which was tasty as well. Also tried some mixed pickles, also good. Service was pleasant. It’s a casual, order at the counter affair. Seating was slightly chaotic, it was lunchtime, but it seems to turn fast. Having affordable sake is a plus. If I lived nearby, I’d eat here often.
Don't think of this as an American or Italian deli with sushi. It's a Japanese deli with sushi plus so much more. Sure, you can stop by to eat, but if you have a large party (6 or more), do take out for a picnic. The staff is very friendly and will help with your decision making, because there's lots of choices. The atmosphere is more of a neighborhood feel. If you don't live nearby, you wish you did. One minor disappointment, I couldn't find any fried of baked sushi on the menu, but they could prepare something for you. Loved the place ❤️.
Great affordable sushi, bento box and udon. Low key dining without table service and a nice selection of Japanese food items as well.
The owners and staff are very friendly and attentive. There are variety of authentic Japanese dishes at reasonable price.
I have been coming here since I was a little kid, they are by far the best japanese restaurant on the central coast. I always order the same thing which is the pork tonkatsu bento box which comes with rice, soup and salad. They also have really good sushi rolls, I especially like the California roll and the cucumber roll. The staff is always super kind and the restaurant is always kept very clean! If your wanting some good sushi this is the place to go! 💯🍣🍱
What a great little sushi place in Monterey. Food was fresh, fast and tasty. The atmosphere felt like being in someone's home - comforting. The breadth of the menu is something to behiold - it looks as if they will run out of wall space. Recommend.
Sometimes, all you want is a bite of home — the kind that tastes like Japan even when you’re miles away. Ocean Sushi Deli delivers exactly that. From authentic onigiri to miso soup, and bento boxes that feel like a full-on culinary hug, this place had us hooked the moment we walked in. The lunch specials are not to be missed — it’s the kind of deal that makes you forget about your afternoon meetings and just focus on the joy of good food. So good, in fact, we ended up going twice in one week. Yes, it was that irresistible. The staff is genuinely friendly, attentive, and welcoming, making you feel like a regular even on your first visit. Fair warning: lunch hour is busy, but that’s just proof that this little gem is doing something right. If you’ve been craving a taste of Japan, this is your spot — cozy, authentic, and utterly satisfying.
We went to Tokyo last winter and this shop reminded us of many mornings we spent at Tsukiji Fish Market. The shop is very casual which contribute to homie feeling and affordable price. The shopkeepers are so friendly and make sure we got what we needed! Since I could hardly find any Ikura in OK. I got like 5 Ikura nikiri sushi and I was just in heaven! Very fresh and tasted amazing! Thank you for taking care of us.
Got the Saturday special. Fish was fresh. Soup and salad was nice. Staff very nice and friendly. Pleasant experience...except my wife got mad at me and wouldn't talk or help me eat the food. You're asking why that would change the experience? Oh, you are terrible!
What a find. So glad we made the effort after the aquarium (amazing) to make the short drive up to here. It’s nothing to look at inside, just a few wonky tables and chairs. But the huge menu, the freshness of the fish and the charm of the staff will win you over. If I worked in downtown Monterey, I’d be here every week.
Excellent cafe that's been around long enough that I've been going there for more than fifteen years. Feels like very little has changed in that time. Good food, good service, free tea. Feels a lot more like a place you'd actually find in Japan than many more upscale places do. It's a staple and icon of downtown Monterey.
A little piece of Japan in Monterey Bay. This shop has a ton of authentic Japanese products and food. They have great flavor and vegan and gluten free options. The service was really good and everyone was really nice and patient in explaining the menu. I would definently come here again.
We are in Monterey for the week and were looking for no-frills sushi since we are traveling with an infant. Ocean Sushi Deli popped up on our search and we are so glad it did. The staff was so friendly and the food was good! The prices were reasonable as well. We are already thinking about going back again before the end of the week.
Delicious food at a fair price, warm service and fantastic options for everyone. My partner and I ordered different donburi bowls and could clearly taste that they were freshly prepared. I was able to also get some extra hot sauce and Japanese pepper which really took the dish to the next level. We noticed lots of families enjoying lunch here and an array of grab & go snacks. It’s also one of the only local spots that charges fair prices for Japanese snacks like candy and taiyaki (some of the other candy shops downtown charge twice the price for the same thing). We’re only in-town for a wedding but will definitely return anytime we’re in the area.

Friendly service, casual and relaxed atmosphere. Ate at tables outdoors - the snapper and donburi salmon were excellent. The free hot tea was delicious.
Love our little family-owned, sushi/teriyaki spot. Staff is incredibly friendly and the food is delicious. I don't eat sushi, but my kiddo tells me it's yummy. I love the donburri bowls, especially the beef bowl, made with rib-eye. Don't miss this quaint little restaurant.
A large, very Japanese menu, not limited to sushi but including things not often seen, like shioyaki saba and an extraordinary eel bowl. Small, with a very family-owned feel. Extremely friendly people, very kind and generous. Popular, so you have to navigate it possibly being quite full, but absolutely worth the effort. I'm not a big fan of how, these days, you gotta drop $100 to get a full dinner for four, but this place is DEFINITELY the place to do that.

Very good sushi, slowest service ever, and the girl that takes your order doesn't follow through with the entire order. She leaves it to the young man to figure it out. If you order drinks, ask for them before you sit because you won't get them unless you ask several times. After waiting for 30 minutes, I noticed a little area where you can serve yourself tea or water while you wait. It would have been nice if the hostess/cashier mentioned it.
Possibly the owner lady was very nice suggesting some options for me after I mentioned it was my first visit. The nigiri I had wa very good and tasted super fresh. I was surprise provided a miso soup on-the-house! 🙏 Super nice relaxed atmosphere. I will definitely be back to try some of their combos.
Nice Japanese restaurant in Monterey and food was good after a walk around the Pacific Grove and Aquarium area. The hot tea was great since it was a cold winter day. We will be back.
This is one of my favorite places to go for California rolls But when I got here yesterday, they had a salmon lunch special that I couldn’t resist. Everything was made to perfection. My other go to secret dish that I love here is their red snapper dinner plate and so affordable. I highly recommend this restaurant and my other tip is to call ahead when you can.

First time here, and was very happy with the taste and quality of our sushi rolls. We ordered the Dragon, and Happy Island, and they were delicious. The reason I'm not giving a 5-star is because of the price, and the wait. I waited for 29 minutes to get two sushi rolls, I actually was 30 minutes over on my lunch break, and for two sushi rolls I paid $37. Don't get me wrong, the sushi tasted great, but that was a ridiculously long wait for two rolls, and to almost pay $40 for two rolls is excessive. Other than that if you're looking for a great-tasting sushi, you don't mind $17-$20 rolls, or the wait, then you really will enjoy this place.
Servers were very kind. (人 •͈ᴗ•͈) If the menu was condensed they'd do better financially; service time would be quicker, customer turn around would be higher, and items could be more affordable thus creating an incentive for greater orders and higher spending from customers would occur more frequently. Having a current menu posted online would also have a positive impact on the "call-in orders preferred". (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻ Service time was too long; it was less busy than usual, but I had to wait 45 minutes for my meal. ┐( ˘_˘)┌ The rice-to-fish ratio is not good and the rice was overcooked. I heard customers who walked past me, leaving the store, say the "food was so disgusting". I don't think it was that bad, but I've had better. I felt the menu items were overpriced given the quality, location, and the fact that you could get better quality all-you-can-eat sushi elsewhere for the price of two rolls from Ocean Sushi Deli.
We stopped here for lunch. The teriyaki bowl was good flavorful although it can use less rice and more meat and vegetables. We ordered the jumbo spicy tuna roll and it was a bit dry and too much rice as well! The service was good and friendly

Imagine walking into a sushi joint and being immediately strafed by dangling menus—floating overhead like bureaucratic jellyfish, harassing you with choice rather than offering it. You’re barely settled when a gaggle of Gen Z interlopers swoops in behind you, like extras sent to remind you of your own obsolescence. The sushi itself? “Fine.” That death-rattle word. Hovering in the uncanny valley between above-average and below-average, it left no memory except the faint sting of disappointment. Atmosphere? Nonexistent, unless you count the fluorescent hum and the invasive proximity of strangers. I left no tip. Not out of cruelty, but because the entire experience seemed to demand a gesture of negation. This place offers not dining but existential malaise disguised as dinner. If you value even a shred of ambiance or joy, avoid it.

Avoid ordering ramen to go - container half filled with 2 pieces of meat, 1 small bok choy, some noodles and greyish soup and not much else. Super disappointing and not consistent with the pics of other dishes!
Total chaos disguised as casual dining. There’s no list, no signage, no system—just a crowd of confused people inside, trying to figure out whether they should grab a table or wait. Some guests just sit down at open spots, while others are suddenly told that people outside are ahead of them. Honestly the most confusing seating system I’ve ever encountered. When I asked how it works—just so I’d know for next time—the staff wouldn’t explain anything. One of them snapped, “That’s just how it is—because I said so.” No logic, no consistency, just attitude. And the food? Mediocre at best—nothing tasted fresh. I asked how to do it right next time, but honestly, there won’t be a next time. They also ask customers if they are local and give preferential treatment depending on the answer. Maybe they were so rude to me because they assumed I was a tourist?
I can deal with the absolute lack of ambience, but the food….yikes. This sushi makes the gas station variety seem like haut cuisine. My salmon skin roll featured salmon straight out of a can. Seriously? I’m not even sure it was salmon. It tasted like Chicken of the Sea.
All right! Very little fish in the roll thin slivers of fish on top of the roll and not flavorful at all. Very disappointing, especially when I asked for a very light rice.
