Opinions de Montrio Bistro Monterey
It was so good the first time, we had to go back for seconds! Thanks to Sally and Katie for the incredible service. The food was over the top. We can't wait to go back. The the Chili Puff was so delicious that I just had to purchase Rosine's Cookbook. The Benedicts were topped with the best hollandise sauce I've ever had. Hint: another reason to buy her cookbook! I can see why this restaurant is on the DO NOT MISS list of places to try in Monterey.
Four of us stopped in at Rosine’s for dinner before a concert at the Golden State Theater across the street. We had a 6:30 PM reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival, despite the restaurant being very busy. Our server greeted us promptly and took our order without delay. We ordered the Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccine Alfredo with Prawns, Crispy Hot Chicken Sandwich, and the California Club. The food arrived quickly and everything was delicious. I had the Crispy Hot Chicken, which came with hot oil and hone; excellent flavor and perfectly prepared. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout our visit. We all enjoyed our meals and still had plenty of time to walk over to our concert. A great experience overall.
This is a Monterey County legend! Known for their spectacular desserts, especially their cakes! Everything we’ve ever had for breakfast or lunch has been delicious. Service is good and the coziness and decor (especially at Christmas) is inviting. We look forward to visiting again on our next trip home. Highly recommend! Don’t miss out on dining here at least once if you are visiting Monterey.
This might become one of our go-to places. The great thing about Rosine’s is that they have great food, nice staff, fairly affordable prices compared to other restaurants, & most of all, you feel comfortable being here with young kids. In fact, most of the families eating there had young kids & it didn’t seem to bother anyone. I did try their minestrone which was amazing, olive garden doesn’t even compare. I also had their calamari steak, which I never had before, & enjoyed it. We also took a brownie & cookie home. The brownie was good, maybe too rich though. Cookie was great. Overall the food was really good & the staff very nice. I look forward to coming here again with my family.
We got the dulce de leche latte and a butter cookie latte both hot but you can get them cold. The ministrone soup was mentioned on Diners n Drives for good reason. Its the best I ever had with big chunks of chuck roast beef. We also had the brunch burger and it was good the bacon jam and fried egg set it off. Also got the turkey avocado Benedict and it was so yummy. The hollandaise sauce was very creamy. Will definitely be coming back now that we are locals!
Decided to stop in for an early dinner with my wife and had a great dining experience. I reserved a table for dinner through the OpenTable app. After spending the afternoon visiting Carmel by the Sea, we got hungry a bit earlier than expected so I revised my reservation to an earlier time. Upon arrival to Rosine's we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. After being seated, we were welcomed by Sarah, our charming and informative server. She took our drink order and gave us time to peruse the menu. My wife decided on a cup of the minestrone soup and lasagna, and I chose a cup of the clam chowder and calamari steak sandwich. My wife is somewhat of a minestrone soup afficionado and she thoroughly enjoyed her soup saying how tasty, flavorful, and chunky it was, claiming it was the best she's ever had. My clam chowder was equally enjoyable, thick and tasty and full of clams, potatoes, and vegetables. My wife's lasagna was artfully presented, surrounded by slices of garlic bread. It was delicious and had the right balance of noodles, cheese, and sauce. My calamari steak sandwich was also delicious, evenly breaded and included a buttery toasted bun, fries, and ketchup and tartar sauce on the side. The portions of our entrees were very generous such that neither of us could finish and had to take the rest to go. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Rosine's. Sarah was very attentive to our needs, answered all of our questions, and promptly refilled our drinks, all while being gracious and welcoming. We'll definitely return the next time we're in town.
Fantastic place with large menu and excellent selections. Ham steak was huge and pancakes light and fluffy. Also have a huge amount of homemade desserts with friendly staff
We absolutely love the food everytime we come here. My favorite is the loaded potato appetizer. I have been here more than 3 times and have never been disappointed, this is our go to spot for lunch whenever we visit Monterey or Big Sur. Most recently we tried their cream cheese chocolate cake for my brother’s birthday and it was amazing. The waiters were so sweet and came together to sing a birthday song and it made my brother’s day.
I came to Rosine’s for brunch with my mom and aunt, and we absolutely loved it! The food was absolutely delicious, everything tasted so fresh and flavorful, and the portions were generous. The service was excellent too friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxing weekend brunch. We’ll definitely be coming back again soon! Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food and great service.
Amazing food. Best Alfredo I’ve ever had. Calamari was 10/10, meatballs amazing. Desserts for everyone and can tell they are all homemade. Great place and would recommend to everyone.
The food came out so quickly and tasted AMAZING! Best pancakes I've ever had. The staff were sweethearts and very attentive. I definitely recommend stopping by for a bite.
Sarah was an excellent server—very attentive and knowledgeable. She took care of everything we needed, answered all our questions, and was quick without ever making us feel rushed. Great food and a wonderful atmosphere made the experience even better.
We've been here a few times and had a different server each time. We've only tried the cakes and pies so far, so this review is mainly about that. The staff are generally very nice. The cakes and pies are delicious and some pieces could even replace a whole meal, they are so rich. We can highly recommend the carrot cake and the (very rich) peanut butter cake. We will definitely be back to try all the different cakes and pies and are already looking forward to their new creations.
This place is very nice, highly recommend , amazing deserts and of course the blueberry pancakes were my favorite, the wife got poached eggs with salmon, she said that it was also tasty!
We had come here before and couldn’t get in because they were packed and had 45 min wait so we had left. We came back to Monterey and wanted to see why it was so popular. The moment you walk in, you have the most gorgeous pies and cakes greeting you. The hosts are quick to answer questions and to sit you or change your seating if you prefer (we wanted a booth). The place has a diner feel, but extra fancy and classy at a super fair price. There’s so many diverse families, couples and even groups that are tourists. I highly recommend their food and desserts. I’m so thrilled to say that their snickers cake wins. We did a sampler and I can’t get enough of it! It’s like eating the actual chocolate bar, but turned into this smooth mousse that you can crunch on! Please order milk or coffee with it, you won’t regret it! It’s a must for anyone in Monterey!
Loved the food here so much!! Great options for gluten free - I got gluten free French toast and an omelet that was incredible. Sitting outside was lovely + the waitstaff was very nice.
This place was Fantastic the Atmosphere was refreshing and vibrant the food and lasagna was fabulous and Soo delicious and service was reasonably timed well..drinks appetizers and then the hot piping food was out the steak was delicious as well. I grew up in New Port Beach and have tried several different restaurants but this was absolutely Wonderful. 💛🌹
Good food, very busy place. The staff were great and attentive. Calamari and fries were very tasty. I do wish they had regular cocktail sauce as their house sauce was kinda sweet and didn't seem have any horseradish in it. Onion rings were fantastic and the clam chowder is pretty good. Chicken pesto sandwich was okay. LOTS of tasty looking cakes, but too full to partake. Would recommend!
Everything was great, notably the service - friendly and not overly formal - and good god, the duck confit mac and cheese. I’d have taken a second portion of it over the wagyu steak, and I’m not complaining about the steak. I woke up the next morning and checked if they were open for lunch (they weren’t) just to try to go get more. All around a lovely meal and celebration-worthy. :)
Great restaurant with a very attentive staff and good food. We had a wonderful time and experience during our visit. I would recommend to anyone looking to have a nice night, great for a date night
Great dinner and fantastic service. Concetta welcomed us and served us a great cocktails, wine, appetizers, and over the top food to our party of six. The scotch and lemon drops solved our dehydration and the entrees provided great nutrition all topped off with several bottles of Austin Hope Cab
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Montrio for my engagement party, and I couldn't have been more impressed! The second-floor booking process through Coastal Roots Hospitality was seamless, thanks to the exceptional service from Elvia and Patrick. They went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect, providing us with menus and taking care of all the details. The upstairs area was elegant and intimate, and the service was top-notch. We were treated to delicious appetizers and meals, and the portion sizes were generous. The main course was particularly noteworthy. Overall, I highly recommend Montrio for any special occasion. The staff's attention to detail and warm hospitality made our celebration truly unforgettable.
Great experience. The menu was focused, but had a wide variety of choices for every pallet. Everything we tried was spot on and cooked to perfection. Staff were extremely kind and treated us perfectly. Decor and ambience were tremendous. Excellent meal and overall experience. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Wow, this place has very good food. I believe most of the other review says that all their menu itme is great. I had the pork belly with apple cinnamon and almond butter, the pork chop and bread pudding. All 3 were excellent! Their sauce is amazing and I can see why this place has such good reviews. I'll be back here again for sure next time I'm in the area!
From the moment we walked in and were greeted by a friendly smiling hostess, our entire experience was extraordinary. We came to this area to celebrate our granddaughters 16th birthday and our absolutely adorable server, Bridgette, made it a fabulous occasion. We all had the Montrio Mixed Green salad which was perfect. Crisp lettuces, seasoned pistachios a few dried fruits (maybe cherries or crans) and just the right amount of dressing. My husband and I tried the surf and turf which was spot on. We both loved the bernaise sauce. Our granddaughter had the Cioppino and also thoroughly enjoyed it. We had an incredible white wine with our meal, one which the GM recommended. WOW!! We shared desserts having the flourless chocolate cake and the crème brûlée. Divine. The staff treated Pren to two scoops of homemade ice cream; vanilla and strawberry. Complete with a birthday candle!!! It really was the perfect night. Thanks to the back of the house too! I highly recommend Montrio.
If you are in Monterey Bay and don't eat at the Montrio you will miss the best in town. It's definitely give stars quality modern American kitchen prepared by high class chef. We had crab cakes - the best ever. Duck breast was tender with delicious vegetables. Elegant inside with great atmosphere Excellent service. Everything was organic as I'm very sensitive and had zero digestive problems after. Plus, we were able to enjoy our dinner outside with our dog. ❤️
Garlic Roasted Mushrooms they were okay I wish they were dripping in garlic butter. Almost Paloma Tequila Blanco, lime juice, house-made grapefruit shrub Tastes exactly like a good Paloma but without the fizz of soda. Would recommend Snake River Farms Wagyu Eye of Ribeye Grilled over almond wood, duck fat fried marble potatoes, charred onion, huckleberry demi-glace Just get it because it's that good melt in your mouth seriously, but pro move ask for a little salt to sprinkle on top it will enhance the flavors truly. Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Cakes Pan-seared, apple-carrot slaw, pomegranate seeds, pomegranate reduction Good, but it is sweet, I would have preferred it a little more with savory notes but I recommend it because it's a really fresh take on the crab cake Miso Glazed Pork Belly Pickled apple arugula salad, garlic chili oil This I would order again and double it.. soo good. The salad was absolutely refreshing paired well with the rich tender pork belly. I was so mesmerized. Olo Ranch Braised Beef Short Rib Confit of cherry tomatoes, vegetable sauteed spinach, pommes puree, pan jus Tender TENDER TENDER I recommend ordering this everytime you go.
Rosine’s. Wow. Another treasure along Alvarado Street. Six of us gathered there to celebrate a work milestone — the kind of dinner where you want energy, warmth, and food that feels a little celebratory. One member of our group gave us a brief history lesson beforehand, noting that Rosine’s has been a mainstay of Alvarado Street for years. After one evening there, I understand exactly why. This is a busy place. Reservations are strongly recommended. The atmosphere strikes that rare balance: slightly lively but not chaotic. It wasn’t overly loud, yet you could feel the hum of a well-loved restaurant doing steady business. Quaint, friendly — the kind of eatery most people hope to find while strolling downtown Monterey. My only quasi-complaint? We were seated in a higher-traffic area, which slightly detracted from the overall experience. Not a deal-breaker, just a small note. They offer both indoor and some outdoor seating. Starters We began with two orders of Crispy Calamari Strips and Chips (fries). If you’re expecting tentacles, this isn’t that style — these are strips. The dish came paired with cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and ketchup. Both platters were completely devoured. We also ordered Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, and Chips, which was excellent. The tortilla chips were unique — almost a cross between flour and corn tortilla chips. Hard to describe, but memorable. Everyone shared a bottle of wine or ordered individual drinks, and the table felt properly celebratory. Entrees The six entrees included: Three orders of Surf and Turf Chicken Parmesan Stuffed Salmon Guacamole Bacon Burger The Surf and Turf featured a 10 oz New York steak, three grilled prawns, baked potato (substitutable for mashed or fries at no extra charge), and fresh vegetables. I ordered mine medium with mashed potatoes. Every steak at our table was cooked perfectly to preference — no small feat. The mashed potatoes and vegetables were excellent. I added a $2 Caesar salad. Flavor-wise, it was very good, though the greens were slightly mushy, which muted the experience a bit. A small note in an otherwise strong showing. Everyone at the table genuinely enjoyed their meals. The Coup de Grâce: Dessert Then came dessert. After spotting the size of neighboring slices, we wisely decided to order just one serving for the six of us: Cookies and Cream cake made with Oreo cookies. When I say “slice,” I mean slab. It was massive. Truly one of those “you have to see it to believe it” desserts — and just $10. Even with six people sharing, we didn’t finish it. But it was absolutely delicious. Rosine’s is well worth visiting. Make reservations, expect a nice atmosphere, and come hungry — especially if dessert is in your future. Service was very good and appropriately attentive without being intrusive. A true Alvarado Street classic.
Great spot for a romantic dinner. Decent food, but really I think the price is reflected more in the atmosphere. I'm not a Monterey local, but I have been here many times. I'd say this is one of the best dinners I've had here, but you can still get much better food in SF/Berkeley for the price. Would recommend but also I will try something else next time I'm here.
Decent experience overall. Highlights would include the crab cakes appetizer, which were almost entirely crab and not diluted too much breading. The fish sticks, which are presented as fun fish stick popsicles, or equally good. And although it may read a little oddly, the almond butter pork belly was probably my favorite of the appetizers. How far is mains go, the Kurobata pork chop was quite good, as well the Wagyu ribeye. A little less impressed with the scallop dish; although the scallops themselves were quite good, it was basically a large portion of risotto with four scallops on top; would’ve been better in my opinion with a smaller amount of risotto and added a vegetable or something along those lines.
Visited Monterey over the weekend to celebrate my birthday, and my partner chose Montrio for my birthday dinner. We experienced an excellent dinner service with great cocktails to pair. Ambiance felt intimate and the staff made us feel special. Tip for those who don’t know, they provide complimentary bread upon request, so be sure to ask or they will not tell you about it. The corn creme brûlée was too sweet. The duck prosciutto combined with the creme brûlée tasted delicious, but it felt weird eating that as our appetizer when it tasted like dessert. Our mains were the pork chop and the scallops. The seared scallops were divine! Perfectly cooked and had a nice meaty bite to them. I thought the pork chop was also prepared very nicely. It tasted very similar to chinese siu yuk actually. Both of these large plates came with risotto, and maybe it’s personal preference but we found the risotto to be underwhelming. A bit too heavy, and did not hit the mark for us. The risotto with the pork chop had a sweet sauce on top that was a bit too sweet for our tastes. For dessert, we had a very decadent chocolate cake that came with pop rocks sprinkled on top. The pop rocks were fun because I have not had them in years, but too much since the cake itself was already heavy. We received complimentary sorbet for my birthday, and I enjoyed the sorbet over the cake. Thank you for the great service.
We came here for my boyfriend’s birthday and ordered the pork belly to start, then the scallops and the Cipriano. The service was great—friendly with thoughtful suggestions and pairings. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the same standard. The pork belly was overcooked and chewy, missing the rich, tender texture we were hoping for. Good flavor pairing with the pear. The scallops were a real letdown. They only seared one side, leaving the other side pale and unappetizing. The risotto they were served on was overdone and mushy. As for the Cipriano, it was just okay. It wasn’t brothy at all, more like a basic jarred tomato sauce. We really wanted to love the experience, especially for a special occasion, but the food just didn’t deliver. Would not go again, not for $300. Good plus 4 drinks.
The mashed potatoes were BOXED!!! It was not freshly made. I ordered steak and shrimp and it was bleh. Not much flavor. Then to be served with boxed mashed potatoes?!?! Boo. Luckily i ordered potato wedges so at least that was a real potato. The rumchata hot chocolate was THE BEST THING on the table. There were GNATS all over the place!! Once they started landing on my food, i was done. The staff were super nice. That's what gave my review two stars. We tipped her really well just because our waitress was nice and sweet. I was so disappointed in this place. They need a deep clean and a chef that cooks
I was pretty thrown off by this one. Good atmosphere and service, but my $75 dollar steak had a massive grey band and was really disappointing. The potatoes were far too firm and undercooked and the risotto was bland. I really wanted this place to be awesome, but it wasn't. The duck confit was properly cooked, but under seasoned. For perspective, we were so underwhelmed by our 200 dinner that we went to a brewery down the street and grabbed a burger and a beer. They salvaged our first kid free night in weeks. Cheers.
