My go to location to have Porridge. We order: minced pork & preserved egg porridge, roasted duck, roast pork, bbq pork and the Pan fried rice noodle with XO sauce. Their porridge is a little bit watery which I like while my husband likes his a bit thicker. But my favorite is the roast duck, and bbq pork over rice. They give you a lot of rice with it. My comfort food and it’s reasonably too .
Porridge King is a casual restaurant that serves delicious Cantonese cuisine, especially porridge. I visited this place on a chilly evening and ordered the pork and preserved egg congee, the pea sprouts garlic , and the salted pork chop. The porridge was warm and comforting, with a smooth texture and a savory flavor. The pork was tender and the preserved egg added a nice contrast. The salted pork rib was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a lot of fried garlic. The pea sprout garlic was great with a spicy dipping sauce on the table. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. The service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant was clean and spacious. I enjoyed my meal at Porridge King and would recommend it to anyone who loves porridge or Cantonese food. I hope you like it! 😊
Had a beef and noodle soup which was amazing!
When my relatives visit this is a place we always go and we love the food. Service can be a bit slow but the cheap prices make up for it. Their menu is also massive and the waiters and waitresses somehow have all the dishes memorized to all the numbers. The place is fairly clean and it’s great for a big family meal or just a small occasion lunch.
A wonderful alternative to delicious Chinese dishes that will fulfill any meal of the day. Walked in for a 7pm dinner. The place was 70% packed on a midweek. This was a stress free way to wind down the evening, with a nice hot and satisfying meal. Cannot complain about the free parking.
The food here is superb, and the service is great. I like coming here in the evenings for dinner and take advantage of the daily specials they offer. Recently the storm cut the electricity to my home, so I spent like 4 hours here reading after telling the wait staff my situation, and they kept my tea full the entire time!
No frills but delicious delivery of classic Hong Kong style porridge, bbq and related cuisine. Don’t come if you expect friendly wait staff and fancy ambiance. If you appreciate hyper-efficient service and you love authentic Chinese food at reasonable prices, give it a try. Cash only!
This is a hidden gem. I have not been back to the restaurant since pandemic. The food is still great! For someone who grow up with Cantonese food, this is comfort food. Roast duck is very tasty. Service is typical Cantonese restaurant service, above average I would say. All the servers are quite friendly. Btw, the 9.5% is tax, not service change. The price here is very decent compared to other places that charge automatically 18%.
Food was good and portion was big . Friendly people there . Definitely will return :)
First time visiting Porridge King, and I’m really impressed! The food is absolutely delicious, and the service is great. One unique thing about this place is that they allow you to bring in seafood for them to cook. I picked up a fresh crab from 99 Ranch, and they prepared an amazing salted egg crab—100/100, so good! Definitely coming back to try more dishes. Highly recommend!
One of the most underrated places³ I ever went to. The duck is so good. The porridge was delicious and better than many places I went to in Oakland Chinatown. Sweet and sou pork was very authentic and not too sweet. Definitely will go there again
Amazing food! Service is also top-notch. I definitely recommend this place
Kids love this place and we’ve been coming here years, still good like last time. Well made beef chow fun, good food.

Such a wonderful, no-nonsense, comforting, and the best casual Chinese restaurant in Daly City! They had all my favorites here that it was hard to choose them all but all the food was delicious with abundance of “wok hey” for the courses that are supposed to have it which is a testament to me on how good Chinese food is. Friendly staff and the portions are definitely above average which is great for my wallet. I would not hesitate to come back and such a gem! This restaurant is the real deal!

Ninety five percent of the diners in this crowded restaurant during lunchtime, was Chinese. This of course is s good sign. The food is very authentic, and today I enjoyed the roast duck, and roasted pork, which hang in one of the restaurant's windows. The diner next to me ordered the eggplant w/ chicken and pork, which I will order next time. Parking was a bit tight, but available. They only accept cash.
It is very good food worth the drive from halfmoon bay all food there is great
We had burgers for the last few meals and got sick of it. So, when we arrived SFO, we were looking for Chinese food. I went to Google nearby and read good reviews about this eating place. All of us were pleasantly surprised that the dishes were better than we had expected, the fried Mee Hoon stood up with 2 Thumbs up. We returned to this place consecutively two days. Twice we failed to order the Garlic Chicken, always sold out when we arrived there at 8pm. I could have given a more than 4 stars if the waiter could be more patient.
Good place for roasted Duck or Porridge after grocery shopping at 99 Ranch. Porridge was filling. Duck was flavorful. Not feeling the dipping sauce.
Although named ‘Porridge King’, they also serve other classic Cantonese dishes and have a BBQ section (for char siu, duck, etc.). The main negative is that they are generally more expensive than other restaurants in the area (e.g. Skyline Cafe). Their regular wonton noodle soup was $11.50 before tax and tip. It came with A LOT of egg noodle, and the soup and wontons tasted great. No veggies or garnish of any kind though. Service was better than at Skyline Cafe. Cash only.
They are known for porridge and bbq items. Been here plenty of times, food is alright but will fulfill you. The only thing on the downside is cash only.
Old school type of Cantonese eatery.... it offers a wide variety of food to choose from, good place to fill your stomach. It’s a casual spot for a quick meal, decent food but don’t expect to receive world class service or any unreal expectations.

The bbq pork here is the best I've ever had. The duck, not so much cause it doesn't come with the Au Jus sauce. two item bbq pork and duck over rice, $20. Too expensive to me for the small amount of meat. Bbq pork makes up for everything. Just it that on its own.

not as good as it used to be. I drove 40 min to eat here because I loved this restaurant but I'm really disappointed right now. I ordered beef brisket tossed noodle, braised cod with tofu claypot. Both dishes not the same as before. Beef brisket is cold as if they just took it out of the fridge and microwaved for 30sec. Braised cod pieces are smaller than before with thicker coating. And somehow few pieces of chicken meat are in the clay pot.
The food is nothing but average. Came for lunch specials.
Food was excellent. I enjoyed the duck and noodle plate that I ordered. However initially the food I ordered was not sent out correctly. They did remake the dish very quickly and it was delicious. Service was fast and it's a very casual place. I would magine they would handle large groups well.
Food here is always good... service sucks, it seems like they avoid you especially if none chinese speaking customer... and i don't get them automatically adding tip as a 15% service charge I have never seeseen this ...
In comparison to other Chinese restaurants, this place it a couple dollars more per item. Nothing to write home about. A “15% service fee” is automatically added to your bill for dine in, and a little bit of attitude if you don’t add a couple more dollars to it when you get your change.
Came here for a late lunch and it was cold outside, I was tired and missed my lunch and it was almost dinner time. I had a long drive to my hotel and I knew there would be traffic. I just finished a job in the same parking lot. I walked over here as the other places said Cash Only on their door! I ordered the Shrimp and Egg Chow Fun and to go I had the Roast Duck over rice plate. I was super hungry and literally anything should taste good to me. I dug into the shrimp chow fun and was kind of disappointed 😞 the noodles they were using were not great. I think they were not the thick ones have had my entire life. They were thinner and skinner. They tasted like they were from a package of instant noodles. No Wok Hei goodness either. I didn't eat much and just ate the shrimp and eggs. Super disappointed. Since I didn't get any satisfaction from the chow fun I ate the Duck plate as well. That on the other hand was good. I just ate the meat and a little rice to cut the greasy fattiness from the duck. The service was fine and the hot tea was welcome on a cold rainy day. Not sure how to review this as it was bad for me on a easy well known beloved dish. You guys try it and tell me!
It was packed but that is to be expected on weekends and holidays. The barbecue pork and roast duck were excellent. Unfortunately, they forgot to bring the rest of our order so that was a definite minus in my books. Service is tolerable only because the food is pretty good. No need to leave a tip because they already factor in on your bill which is an additional 15% on their moderately priced menu.
Located in the compact 99 Ranch shopping complex off skyline boulevard in daly city, Porridge King offers a lot more than porridge.... to varying degrees of success. The menu is expansive and just about everything is available...from porridge and noodles to roast pork or duck rice plates up to clay pots. This is isn't a higher end seafood restaurant. Just a regular Chinese restaurant mainly serving the locals. Prices are on the high side. I would steer clear of the noodles with soup. The seem to do better with stir fried dishes. I ordered the beef chow fun with vegetables and gravy "suhp chow choi suhm ngow hoh" ,along with low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. Dish was piping hot, not too oily with generous portions. Other dishes didn't fare so well. The noodle soups were barely ok. The noodle were fully cooked.. Roast duck rice seemed like a small portion for the price. We didn't try the porridge. All in all, porridge king fits the bill if you're hungry and want chinese food. Certainly you'll be going where the locals go. I'd go back for the chow fun. Other items, not so much.
I had a wonton noodle soup with roasted duck and milk tea. Milk tea was awesome and same as Burmese milk tea Pot Seint. But unfortunately there was a hair in my noodle and I showed the server and he said he can replaced my noodle but I denied. The taste was satisfying except hygiene.
Food was pretty bland. Got rice noodle soup with duck and it had no flavor. Friend got fried noodles and it was a bit better, but still not very flavorful. The green beans and minced pork (pictured) was pretty good, but the flavor didn't penetrate into the green beans

The food and service are decent. However, this was the first time I’ve ever been chased down for a tip. Sometimes, I choose to leave a separate cash tip on the table rather than on the credit card. Demanding a tip is a greedy behavior I don’t like.

Been coming here for years but first time after the pandemic. Was disappointed with the take out food. Almost felt like the they have changed chef. Pick up is a bit slow since there is no separate line for phone order pick up. You would have to stay in line with people who haven't ordered. Not going back. Updated review. Gave them a try again today. Ordered lunch specials and it wasn't good at all. Definitely not going back!
I came in before 3 families, my order was the last one taken (the other families food was coming out as my order got taken). I ordered 3 items but only 2 were brought to me (and only 2 were brought, just noted to show how much I was ignored). Did not get a refill on my tea. A couple that got there way after me got their food first, and even left before my bill was taken care of. Sorry to say, good food but really bad service
They raised their prices which is fine considering inflation. V mediocre food. But today, with the poor service, we were asked to give more tip as we left the restaurant. Wow. We did and I regret it. But that’s a first! Will not be coming back. Did not even take pictures as the food was blah. So weird
So I didn’t know that this is only cash restaurant to begin with so when it’s time for me to pay, they were accepting my debit card but told me that they will charge me 3% fee. So I balked and told them that it is against the law to charge customers of the 3% fee when that is a contract between the merchant and the bank! The male server was so abrasive towards me that in the end the cashier told me that she will refund me the 3% that the POS will automatically charge on my debit card which I agreed just to be able to get out as I was held up for a longtime disputing and getting lost in translation. I still gave them 15% tip despite the hurdle. So everyone for those doing takeouts from this restaurant check your bill and see if you are paying 3% for ordering takeout from them. It’s against California law to be charged the 3% fee CA Covk code 1748.1
I used to love this place. Food is still good. However, they now charge a hidden 9.5% service fee! Sad to lose a local favorite to scummy, shady business practices. Just increase the menu prices instead of surprising people at the end!
We walked in 8:30pm for only one porridge & vegetable. They said cash only because they were closing which is fine! By the time we checked out it was only 8:55pm. The lady took the cash for the food and came back again saying they didn’t receive the tips. So I quickly looked into my wallet and noticed I only have $3 cash left. I told the lady I don’t have much cash left, could’ve tipped them more with credit card. She got upset and took the $3 then walked away…extremely rude. What’s even more rude is, she came back right away trying to clean our table with our food still on the table. I guess she tried to tell us to leave. Not only the service was bad but also the food was disappointing. Porridge was tasteless.
Please correct your hours of operation for Saturday and Sunday on your website. It says 10am but on your door it says 11am. It's a great disappointment to come all the way and find that you have to wait for an hour till opening time!
Haven’t been here for a while since they were closed during the pandemic. First of all, they served you a free tea. OMG!!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes there were a hair sticking on a glasses. It was so disgusting!! My appetite was gone even though I was hungry, I wanted to throw up🤮 I managed to order rib porridge, brisket beef and fried noodles. When I checked out and about paying by credit card. They said cash only. Don’t remember if they have changed a payment method after reopening. Anyway, it was a bit annoying paying cash only because their foods not cheap compared with other similar restaurants. Service was good, but not sure if I would come back after such horrible experience.

Wow, what a delightful experience at Porridge King in Daly City last night! Dropped $35 (tax included, how generous) for a roast duck, only to get home and discover they decided to keep one leg and one wing for themselves. Truly a masterclass in portion control! This gem of a place can keep their shady antics—I’m done with them.
Tried to buy half a roasted duck and only had card. There’s a sign that says they accept credit and debit card since some past reviews said cash only. Was told the minimum is $30! I’m not even going to try and come here again.
