We had such a wonderful experience at Gaucho Edinburgh – a real treat as part of a Red Letter Days gift, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. The steak was honestly the best I’ve ever had. Although the steak portion was on the smaller side, every single bite was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. The flavour was outstanding and it was prepared exactly as requested. The mac & cheese was a kids’ portion, which we all enjoyed having a taste of – creamy, comforting and full of flavour. The chips were excellent too, and despite the steak looking modest in size at first, we both left feeling pleasantly full and very satisfied. The atmosphere was relaxed yet special, making it feel like a real occasion. Service was attentive, and Gillian was fantastic — friendly, welcoming and made our evening even more enjoyable. A fantastic dining experience from start to finish – we’ll definitely be back!

We had dinner at Gaucho Edinburgh to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and the experience was absolutely unforgettable. The atmosphere is stunning , very elegant and posh decor, perfect lighting, and a great music selection that really sets the mood. From the moment we arrived, everything felt special. The person who welcomed us and escorted us to our table was extremely polite and professional. They even have a dedicated coat room, where your coat is safely stored and you’re given a tag to collect it when you leave ,a lovely, thoughtful touch. Our waitress, Carla, was simply amazing: warm, friendly, attentive, and very professional. She truly made our evening even more special. My husband surprised me with a second proposal ring, and the restaurant went above and beyond by decorating the plate with “Will you marry me?” written in chocolate , such a beautiful and emotional moment. They also kindly offered us a complimentary dessert and drink, which we really appreciated. The food was of outstanding quality, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. If you’re planning to celebrate a special occasion, this is the perfect place. We were genuinely impressed and wish we could have a restaurant like this in our city. Highly recommended!

We went for the NYE service They were BUSY! But the service was amazing, the staff were so friendly even with some wait, everything was great! Complimentary drinks and amazing food which came out well presented and tasted great! The scallops were exceptional Would recommend to anyone for a date or a meal out with a friend as there is a special vibe in there where it seems to work in synergy with the food!

Had a spectacular visit to Gaucho for my Birthday with my partner. The service from Viola was phenomenal, absolutely delightful host who paid close attention to us and was very helpful with wine and drink selection and making sure we were well looked after. Bringing me a complementary dram of whisky in place of a dessert (since I didn’t have any more room) was a lovely gesture and well appreciated. The only room for improvement would have been on my steak, which I felt a little bit underwhelming in terms of flavour - I ordered one of the marinated steaks and thought it would be a bit more flavourful. That said, my partner ordered the plain ribeye which was definitely delicious. Thanks to Viola and the rest of the team for a lovely evening.

It was the absolute best place to spend my birthday dinner. The hostesses were the most welcoming, my server was always making sure I had everything and gave me a brief rundown of the drinks menu. The meal was served fairly fast so I never had to wait for too long. I had the chimichurri ribeye (10 stars if I could!!!) with fries and Mac and cheese. And for my starter, the cheese and truffle croquettes. They also gave me a complimentary cheesecake for my birthday and it was the perfect dessert. Honestly I cannot compliment them enough but I will 100% be going back and telling everyone. Thank you!

Food, service and atmosphere were all 1st class. Love the marinated fillet steak and the wine list of endless. We got advice from our server to help navigate it. Worth noting that waiting staff only get 15% of the service charge so have it removed and pay it in cash so they get 100% of it.

Booked Gaucho for an early birthday dinner for my partner whilst visiting Edinburgh. Service was brilliant from the start, and our waitress was so attentive. We ordered from the festive set menu and each course was brought out so quickly. And, most importantly, the food was absolutely stunning! Couldn’t fault any part of our experience. Thank you.

Booked in as part of an early year trip to Edinburgh and we were here on a Monday night in January. Place was reasonably busy but poor planning had left only 2 wait staff to deal with 40 or so customers. Our waiter Liam was amazing, doing a grand job given the circumstances. Food was excellent, chicken salad, croquetas, wagyu empamadas all tasty. 200g fillet off to a bad start as it was quite fatty but turned out to be a nice cut. 400g sirloin was exceptional, excellent char flavour, cooked perfectly. One last area for improvement, the knives used are hopeless, and do impact on the experience - sawing through a steak is not where you wanna be folks.

This place is incredible!! The food was reasonable for a high end product and atmosphere. From the moment we entered the staff were very kind and helpful, asking us about our day, and offering to take our coats. Moments like this made it better than better. The food and drinks menus were both detailed which made it perfect for an overthinker like myself for picking the perfect drink. The food menu was the same, and described exactly what you will get. My partner and I shared the chateaubriand which was a perfect serving for us (with the extra sides) the beef melted in our mouths, and the sauces were amazing, I’d especially recommend the Malbec and bone marrow jus, it was an excellent extra for the beef. Sides were perfect, the broccoli tasted Smokey and cooked perfectly to be soft with a small crunch, the spinach was refreshing and lemony, the mushrooms were peppery and were a larger portion, and the chips were lovely and crispy with a fluffy inside. The staff were great, so attentive and helpful with our questions and chit chat. I couldn’t recommend this place more, for a high end meal with a better price tag than some steakhouses. Amazing!!

Faultless experience from start to finish. Impeccable service from our host, the food was sensational. Medium rare steak cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was perfect. Highly recommend.

we came here to celebrate my friends birthday and had a wonderful time! first they accommodated to the fact we were late to our original time. once we arrived we were introduced to our server who was accommodating the whole meal - thank you to alessio (apologies if name is slightly incorrect) the food itself was fantastic i order the ravioli which was delicious however if you do have a slightly bigger palate i would suggest getting some sides which i shared- specifically the spicey mac and cheese with bacon was my favourite thing of the whole meal! we also ended up getting dessert where i chose the brownie which was very rich and filling. also as it was my friends birthday they provided her with a free cheesecake and some prosecco! overall was lovely experience however there was a long wait time to get our meal ordered and for it to arrive but the quality of the meal did make up for that fact !

A very stylish and elegant restaurant. The food was absolutely fantastic, and the service struck the perfect balance – attentive without being over the top. I’d highly recommend the Baby Gem as a side dish, it was a real highlight. Prices are on the higher end, but absolutely fair for the quality you get. Overall a great experience, and I’ll definitely return the next time I’m in Edinburgh.

We’ve been to Gaucho Tower Bridge, but this one was so much nicer in every way. The decoration is amazing and the staff is so friendly. The food was really nice too. I really enjoyed the empanadas. The fact that it’s in the centre of the city is really convenient because it’s a good way to run away from the touristy places without having to go too far from the city. I certainly recommend it if you’re not on a budget.

What a lovely and posh spot! Been there first time and so happy with the food and service. Wonderful and cozy space. Big choice of wine , and cocktails. Nice set means for lunch 3 course for 25 pounds included a steak ! 🥩 Highly recommend and for sure will be back soon. Thank you

We had a lovely lunch date. The prawn chicharron was absolutely delicious and despite the size of the steak it was really tender and nice. Amazing value food and our service by Andrea was spectacular. Would recommend

Amazing experience, and amazing food. Some of the best steaks we've had. Appetizers and wine were great. Alessio took amazing care of us, was very knowledgeable, and shared some good suggestions with us. Best restaurant experience we had in Edinburgh. My partner was very happy with his birthday dinner!

Came for my 21st birthday dinner with family and it was amazing!! The staff were all amazing, especially our server. The atmosphere is very nice and cozy. There are a decent amount of food options and the portion sizes are good too. It is a little more on pricey side but matches the vibe of the restaurant.

I recently had an amazing dinner here and everything was just perfect! From the warm welcome to the excellent menu recommendations, the team really knew their stuff. Our meals were top-notch, and the atmosphere made the evening even better. Even though we arrived late, the service was prompt and friendly throughout. Highly recommend this place for a great dining experience!

Killer spot. We didn’t need a res. Service was stellar, great food, with some affordable-ish options. Cocktails are solid. Cool underground vibe.

Great food excellent service and super dog friendly, we visited for my husband birthday, nothing was too much trouble for the team, the food was excellent, coupled with the cocktails. 5 stars is not enough

Wonderful food, wonderful services from start to finish. The server had given a comprehensive introduction of the meat cut and the menu, so that I could order exactly what I fancied that evening. The steak tartare had the exact ratio of fat for my liking. The sirloin steak turned out to be a beautiful pair of wings to look at. This had been something extraordinary to expect going to a steak house. Dessert was a bit too big for me, but tasted great with so many different textures of chocolate in one plate.

Food (5/5) The fillet tail was amazing—very tender with no connective tissues. Probably the best steak I’ve had in a long while! I also liked the variety of choices there. Service (4.5/5) They brought out all the different cuts of beef on a platter to explain their differences, which was very nice and helpful. The service was also very fast (when it comes to taking your order, getting food out on your table, and noticing that you’re done. However, it did slow down a bit after the main course, and I had to wait a while for the waiter to come take my dessert order and for the dessert to come out. Environment: Very cool layout and decor. Nice bathrooms too—I cannot express how much I appreciated the foot-operated door opener attachment, being someone with ocd.

I celebrated my 50th two days ago, and it was a night to remember, not only of my 3 perfect kids, but the restaurant. It is exquisite, food excellent, the service great. I felt respected, celebrated, and happy. The lady on the picture who was serving us was very kind, competent, and really pleasant. Apologies for not remembering her name. The atmosphere was just the cherry on top of the cake for my birthday. Go there if you want to celebrate your personal or company holiday.

Truly an impeccable culinary experience. I visited Scotland for the first time and came here to celebrate my birthday. From the atmosphere to the food I was impressed. The service was wonderful, the servers were all so kind and helpful. If you have the chance you absolutely must try Gaucho.

We came here to celebrate our engagement, and it was a lovely evening. Everything from the moment we stepped in felt luxurious, attentive staff, cloakroom, a great atmosphere in the restaurant and fantastic service. The food was incredibly well done. Our waiter even gave us free champagne to celebrate our news.

A wonderful dinning experience in the heart of Edinburgh. Very tasty food and attentive service. An extensive wine list and great cocktails. Well presented tables arranged in a non regimented way that gives an air of privacy. Not as expensive as it looks or for it's location. The service was quick and helpful without being overboard.

We just had a lovely meal, everything was spot on! The food and drinks were top-notch, and the whole vibe made it super enjoyable. The staff were really friendly, greeted us warmly, and checked in on us throughout the meal. Plus, the place was clean and tidy, which is always a good sign. Can’t recommend this spot enough for a great dining experience!

Food was fresh, healthy, and delicious. Atmosphere was nice, but a chandelier did fall on a table and explode while we were eating. Not my table, someone else's. The team responded well and now I have a fun story to tell.

Great atmosphere and excellent experience overall. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was just right. The steak was perfectly cooked—tender, flavorful, and clearly high quality. A solid spot for anyone looking for good food and great service.

We had such a great time here! The food was delicious and the drinks were spot on. Our server, Wiola, really stood out — not only was she super friendly, but her knowledge of wines made our night. She helped us pick the perfect pairing, and it honestly made the whole experience even better. We’ll definitely be back!

10 of us ate in their beautiful private dining room yesterday - celebrating a friends 60th. Room was great - glass walled so you felt part of the wider room, but able to chat and be heard. Some ate from the normal menu and others from the incredibly good value lunch menu. All of the food was so tasty - really excellent. Service was perfect and all round the perfect celebration lunch experience. Highly recommend

We had a great meal. The steaks were on another level, easily outshining my last visit to Hawksmoor. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the quick, friendly service made it even better. Plus, the cocktails were spot on!, this place is our favourite Gaucho's by far—highly recommended!

I spent two years in Argentina. Chimichurri is way too popular these days, and it rarely tastes like the real thing. I was astounded at how good it was. The empanadas were baked, which is a must, and the beef and olive flavored were spot on. I could taste the cumin in them, which is essential for Argentine beef empanadas. My wife had the chicken milanesa, which again had the necessary flavors to taste authentic. We loved everything, and it was the best meal we had on our London/Edinburgh trip. I highly recommend it!!

I usually don't post reviews, but I need to say we had an amazing time in Gaucho yesterday. The steaks were one of the best we've had and our server, Adam was amazing. Even the manager (blue dress?) checked on us and made sure we had a great time. For how busy the restaurant was, we thought we would have slow service but it was so well handled. So kudos to the team! Thank you, will be back again.

Usually one of my favourite steak restaurants, something was lacking this time. The steak just didn't seem as juicy. Apart from that the staff were lovely. We were given our own private dining area. And given wee birthday messages as we were celebrating 3 birthdays at once.

We had a table booked for 7 people here on new year's eve for 9pm, we arrived about 20 minutes early and were told the table was probably going to be late and that the upstairs bar was too full so we waited. They did manage to get the table ready for 9pm which was great. The woman who greeted us was lovely and incredibly apologetic that we couldn't fit in the bar. We all ordered the Christmas set menu which was starter, main and dessert for £45. The starters came quickly and were lovely. The problems started with the main course. It came incredibly quickly after the starter and the portions were very small. Most of us got the rump steak and it came out looking quite bad and messy. It looked small but did fill us up. The others got the fish and the turkey which were very small. They then ordered an extra steak as they were still hungry. However, the steak came out as the same time as dessert which also came out super quickly. As soon as we were finished eating we felt pressured into leaving, even though there was no time limit on the booking. We ordered coffees and were planning on waiting to let the food digest but the servers all seemed to be staring at us so we eventually left, feeling quite uncomfortable. Besides this, our waiter was very lovely and helpful. Wouldn't recommend this place unfortunately. Lots of other tables were there before us and didn't seem to be being pressured to leave so we were a bit confused.

Gaucho Edinburgh, located on St Andrew’s Square, offers a stylish yet somewhat inconsistent dining experience. Bookable via the fork and opentable. The bar on the top floor sets the scene for pre-dinner drinks, while the lower ground floor houses the main restaurant. The dark interior, featuring wood-like tree effects, semi-circular booths, and plenty of mirrors, creates a moody, intimate setting. However, some details—like crumbs on the moleskin-style seats and the noticeable jolt when a neighboring table moves—detract from the polished atmosphere. On a Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm, the restaurant was fairly busy, with a lively atmosphere amplified by dance music and the general hum of conversation. The low lighting, mainly from candles, adds to the ambiance, though it may not be ideal for those who prefer a brighter setting. The food was a mixed bag. The 225g rump steak, ordered rare, leaned more toward medium rare. The chimichurri sauce was underwhelming, more of an oily dressing with little depth. On the other hand, the chips were excellent, though the mashed potatoes were forgettable. As for drinks, the strawberry negroni missed the mark—it lacked the signature bitterness and balance of a classic negroni. Wine prices were steep, with a threefold markup even on the cheapest bottles. Service was acceptable, though nothing particularly stood out. A 12.5% service charge is automatically added to the bill. Overall, Gaucho Edinburgh delivers on atmosphere and presentation but falls short in execution, especially given the premium pricing. While some dishes shine, others don’t quite meet expectations, making it a decent but not exceptional choice for steak lovers.

Went here on Christmas Eve, had the 400g ribeye with chimcurri asked for medium but meat was very tough bit disappointing as there steaks are on the expensive side think it was £62 if memory serves me right? Starter of spicy king scallops was very nice, staff were very helpful but busy and ran off their feet. Vibrant atmosphere maybe return in the future.

V
VADIMS LOGINOVS

The food itself tasted fairly good, however the presentation does not match the price or the restaurant’s status. On Christmas Eve, the overall experience felt rushed and impersonal — more like a canteen than a premium steak restaurant. The steak and potatoes were served very plainly, without the level of detail expected at this price point. Our waitress was clearly in a hurry but did her job professionally. That said, when we collected our coats for a large group, all 12 jackets were simply handed to me at once, again in a rushed manner, which felt careless. Would I return? Unlikely.

This was my family’s one nice dinner out during our vacation to Scotland and heard excellent things about this place - exceptional food and service among them. Was underwhelmed on most accounts. Did love the restaurant when we first arrived - lush and cozy inside for sure but louder than expected. To our servers credit it did seem like we were sat during a busy time but service was very slow, waited at least 10-15 minutes from our servers intro for him to even pop by the table again - had to flag someone else down to ask to take our order. The service wasn’t very personable as a result throughout the duration of the meal. I ordered a steak with sautéed spinach and mentioned I couldn’t do the chimichurri because of the heat of the chilis - so I was surprised when the spinach arrived and I bit into it and was met with a mouthful of chili and spices. I certainly should have clarified what was the spinach cooked with - but also the waiter should have had some foresight when I mentioned the no chimchurri to give me a heads up about the spinach. My filet was cooked very well however was certainly chewier than I expected. Again for a 68 pound steak it was very underwhelming. My family did enjoy their roast dinner. Reading all the amazing reviews and having heard all the amazing things about this place - disappointed it did not come close to the expectations. Wouldn’t really recommend or go back after this experience.

Lovely service and nice restaurant. It's reasonably priced for food but I felt the drinks are overpriced. Our starters tasted amazing (soup and tacos) but the main was a let down by the steak. They overcooked them re to our preference. Overall I wouldn't return. It's expensive and we left disappointed with the steak.

C
Christopher Dodd

Greeted warmly and served by C who was initially very attentive, up until taking our orders for mains. As the restaurant became busier, C was no more to be seen except a fleeting visit to take our dessert orders (some 20 minutes after giving us the menus). After we placed our order for desserts, he practically snatched the menus from our hands. Clearly, over-run with tables and too many people to serve. Managed to get the bill after about 10 minutes of trying to get anyone’s attention, it then took about a further 10 minutes to try and get someone to take payment. When we asked the manager (the male situated downstairs) if we could pay our bill he snapped ‘your table server will deal with that’ and walked off. As we were leaving the restaurant, the male manager then barged past us with a muttered ‘’scuse me’. The food was absolutely spot on (if I’m being slightly picky, one of the steaks was slightly more than medium-rare but nevertheless very good, still). What a massive let down on service. One would expect far better for a bill presented of £265 (2 adults and 2 children for perspective). [servers name omitted for anonymity]

We went to Gaucho for a birthday meal & were really let down. The steak was very tough, overcooked, and more grey than pink. There was no flavour to it whatsoever, & it was really bland. The sides were equally disappointing. The mash was hard & lumpy, & the chips tasted like they had been sitting around for a while. The drinks were also a letdown; we got a Kiwi Breeze, which is probably the worst drink I’ve ever tasted. To top it off, our server then shoved the card machine in our face without saying a word whilst we were still eating our dessert. Very unprofessional & rude. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone; there’s far better options out there.

We booked the steaks and cocktail with mates deal at £65 per head No one to greet us coming in and put to the most awkward table in a corner and asked to be moved Waiting staff lovely We had a very nice starter full of flavours with a lovely cocktail but then the meal went downhill The sharing steak platter was not bad enough to send back but cold, chewy and very gristly The cocktails were awful and we left them The toilets weren’t clean and no toilet paper The bill was wrong and had to be amended There was no atmosphere and none of the food or cocktails were explained. Definitely would not return

Came here for my birthday meal and ordered two steaks. Both came chargrilled, but mine was beyond chargrilled it was burnt. The side of mash was cold and untouched. As it was a birthday meal that wasn’t my treat, I tried to catch the waiter walking the floor but missed him before the bill was paid. When I mentioned it, I was told nothing could be done because the bill had been paid. Which is nonsense. He said he would mention the issue to manager. The manager was incredibly dismissive. I understand sending the food back during the meal, but the waiter asked us once how the food was right after he put it down. The waiter was very polite and no issues with his service. The manager said she needed proof, well the proof is in your kitchen where you can see the left over dish and the burnt outer layer of the steak with I had to cut off like skin. Very disappointing for a £150.00 joke of a meal.

Unfortunately really disappointed with Edinburgh Gaucho, as a regular of the various London restaurants I’m used to a certain Steak, if your spending £250 on dinner for 2 you expect it how you ordered it, minimal options to for a steak house in Edinburgh, your choices are Sirloin, Ribeye, Rump and fillet and some marinade options that’s pretty much it for steaks up here. My medium-well 400g fillet steak came ‘charred’ to the table, I sent it back!! (I don't usually, I’m a keep quiet type) With an apology they sent out a replacement but by then all the sides had been eaten, so appetite was gone, but when it came to the table was a medium still not right..! You’d be forgiven if thought it wasn’t a specialty Steak house. The manager was good though and removed the steak from the bill but no conciliation really the dinner was ruined for me. Must say our server (didn’t get her name sorry, was from the Glasgow restaurant) was amazing and fully deserved the service charge.

Visited about a year ago. We felt completely ignored by staff despite repeated eye contact. After asking for the check, we waited around 30 minutes with no response. Being seated in the corner alongside another table of minority guests made the experience feel discriminatory. Steak was fine, but the service ruined it.

H

Me and my friend got a reservation for 9:30 pm. The service was very good, ordered our food - sirloin steak medium rare with mashed potatoes and mushrooms and the steak was to my liking, but the sauce tasted a bit spoilt, however I’ve never had it before so I figured it was fine. Left and once we got home, we both started to feel sick about 4 hours after. We experienced bad acid reflux, my friend experienced nausea and diarrhea. I threw up all of the food. I didn’t think I’d have an experience like this as this restaurant was very nice and high-class but today I barely ate so it could not have been anything else other than the restaurant. Please be careful with the sauce… something is off.

My fiancé and I booked a table for 18th February at 8:30pm to celebrate a late Valentine’s Day. We arrived at 8:50pm, which was five minutes beyond the 15-minute grace period. While we understand the importance of punctuality, the restaurant was very quiet at the time, with many empty tables available. Unfortunately, the receptionist made several passive-aggressive remarks about our arrival while seating us, which felt unnecessary and created an uncomfortable start to what was meant to be a special evening. We ordered around 1kg of sirloin steak to share. My fiancé prefers lean meat, while I enjoy the fattier cuts, so we arranged our plates accordingly. When we were unable to finish everything, we asked for a takeaway box and clearly mentioned that we would like all remaining food packed. However, when the food was returned, only the lean portions had been boxed, and the rest had been discarded without explanation. This was disappointing, especially as we had been explicit about wanting everything kept. It felt like an assumption was made on our behalf rather than respecting our request. Overall, the experience fell short of expectations, particularly for a meal intended to celebrate a special occasion. While the food itself was enjoyable, the service and handling of the situation left us feeling undervalued. Unfortunately, this is not an experience we would wish to repeat.
