I found this place AMAZING for lunch! The steak sandwich was a proper filet cooked medium rare and it melts in your mouth. It was piled on a slice of sourdough with salad and parmesan shavings with hand cut fries on the side and it was only about £9! Well worth it! It’s also a nice and cozy bar environment. Definitely worth a visit for lunch and a drink or two if you’re around the area.
This bar was recommended to us by our Airbnb host, so we went without knowing this place serves some of the best alcoholic drinks... And we don't drink alcohol! Luckily these guys know how to make a delicious, fresh mocktail and didn't give us a hard time about it. Service was great but I especially loved the interior. The tasteful art deco features are absolutely amazingly done and it feels very cosy. Our apple/citrus drink was really really good!
What a pretty pub in an off stream street. If you're lucky get the sofa and the armchair at the back! The Turkish coffee cocktail is amazing! Strong and sweet and if you're a coffee person you'll thank me later. Didn't come for the food but the mackerel was really good! I will definitely come back again! Oh and you can bring your dog along!
Came for a works Christmas dinner. Service was really good, organised, knew what they were doing etc. Atmosphere was lovely and cosy. Food was seriously impressive - not the largest positions but the actual food is satiating and delicious, beautifully presented, and all round impressive. I had the salmon cannelloni, plaice, and apple for dessert. The only things were that my plaice was a tiny bit dry but everything else was absolutely perfect. The gnocchi was sooo good - would have loved some more gnocchi and less mushrooms as there was quite a lot of the latter. And my cannelloni was warm rather than being hot when served. All round delicious though! Will be back with my partner
We were looking to have a dinner date in the neighbourhood and found this restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. The staff was welcoming and accommodating. The cocktail menu was super original, and offered a lot of choice. The food was excellent and very well presented. Would definitely recommend !
When it comes to cocktails, The Voyage of Buck offers vibrant and diverse drinks that are sure to satisfy even the most discerning palate. The cocktail menu here takes you on a tour across five major cities that were very poignant in the life of William ‘Buck’ Clarence, philanthropist, polo player and travel companion of Prince Albert Victor, the infamous grandson of Queen Victoria. ‘Buck’ returned to Edinburgh Scotland in 1900 and lived in the house that is now the Voyage of Buck until 1935. Travel around the globe with cocktails from Venice, such as the Chocolate Orange Espresso Martini, the Black Opium Negroni from Shanghai or the Sumac Paloma from Istanbul. Maybe a wee trip to Monte Carlo is what you fancy with Bugatti Highball. For our drinks we stayed local with a mocktail using local Talonmore; and we also hopped over to Jamaica with the Calypso Sour. All the drinks are very well balanced, not overwhelming on the alcohol and a delight to drink. Voyage of Buck’s Autumn/Winter menu is all about sharing. For me, sharing plates are more than just a dining trend; they are a communal experience that fosters connection and enjoyment. The beauty of sharing plates lies in the opportunity to sample a variety of flavours and textures, transforming the act of eating into a journey of exploration. As each dish arrived at the table, a sense of excitement filled the air, as we both reached across the table to claim our portion, with many an ‘oo’ and an ‘ah’ of delight as we savoured the offerings. The Hummus and Sourdough provided the perfect appetiser whilst we changed our minds several times over what to order. The creamy, smooth hummus paired perfectly with the tangy, chewy sourdough. We chose the Ricotta Raviolo and the Oxtail. Both dishes equally delectable. The raviolo was beautifully crafted golden pockets housing creamy cheese and sat in a pool of pumpkin veloute. The cinnamon flavour was very prevalent. As for the slow cooked oxtail, it was a melt-in-your-mouth delicacy hidden underneath a blanket of the creamiest and lightest of truffle potatoes. There's a choice of five mains dishes. Very tempted by the Beetroot Risotto it was the Chicken and the Venison that got ordered. We indulged in the succulent cooked chicken breast boasting tender, flavourful meat that paired exquisitely with crispy, golden-brown potatoes and the chicken and mushroom jus. The venison is their signature dish and no wonder. Cooked to absolute perfection - seared on the outside whilst still red in the centre. It was melt in the mouth incredible and I have to say, possibly THE BEST venison I have eaten since Kilted Lobster in Stockbridge closed! A must order dish! There’s two choices for dessert and a cheese course. House custard tart, rhubarb compote (£7) Whole St Marcillin cheese, maple roasted figs, pistachios, sourdough (£14) Buck’s affogato; vanilla pod ice cream, espresso (£6) We went for the Custard Tart and the Affogato. Although rhubarb is not in season, it is used here as a compote; and to me Autumn feels like the perfect time for rhubarb! Tart was well cooked and added the perfect sweet end to dinner. The Affogato was all it promised to be - coffee and vanilla ice-cream. The Voyage of Buck offers a cosy yet stylish ambiance and knowledgeable staff which really enhance the dining experience, ensuring your visit is a memorable one. Say goodbye to the ordinary and let your taste buds embark on a voyage of their own.
Great gastro pub with excellent food and equally great service. The Venison Tartare was amazing. My steak was cooked perfectly and I loved the polenta fries. The polenta fries could have used a little more time frying but they tasted great. Can’t wait to go back next time we are in Edinburgh. One of the best places we ate in Edinburgh!
Popped in to this wee Edinburgh 'local' bar & restaurant while wandering through the back roads. What a find. A really lovely vice, great service by enthusiastic staff and good food to boot 🥾. I enjoyed Chicken Kiev & sumptuous mash....the simple classic and it was delicious. Will definitely be returning with Selkie guests during the upcoming guiding season. Only regret ...no room for pudding !!!
We stumbled into this restaurant completely drenched by rain and were lucky enough to still get an incredible dinner (even though the kitchen was nearly closing). The food is seasonal, regional and most importantly delicious and the cocktails were original yet classic (and also delicious). The staff was incredibly friendly! We felt so welcome and left with a significantly better mood than we arrived.
We only had time for one drink but will definitely be back for more and food! Lovely decor with lots of cool touches. Very comfy ambient vibes. We had prosecco and beer although wishing I had time for a cocktail as list looks amazing. The location is a bit special too, near enough the main areas but tucked away in a cute street.
Loved everything about it.... Didn't have any food although it looked good passing by. Upmarket place but somehow relaxed at the same time. Had different dining areas one open and sunny at one window and velvet lined booths in front of the other windows. It had lovely seating at the bar and cosy romantic seating areas elsewhere. It's not big but perfectly formed and sumptuously decorated with plenty of choices of drinks. The atmosphere was low key and relaxed and I really liked this place. Sorry that I didn't get the name of the young gentleman server but the service was impeccable. Maybe try the food next time. 👍
Wow!!! Seasonal, sustainable and locally sourced menu. We had the chicken schnitzel and whiskey salmon with salt and pepper chips. Daniel the bar manager was an absolute delight and made the BEST dirty martini I’ve ever had! Moody interior with lovely low lighting really set the atmosphere 🍸
Fantastic food, cocktails and beer. The service was great too. Can't fault the place and we will definitely be back.
Outstanding. Was there with two colleagues for dinner and it was as good as, maybe a bit better than any Michelin starred restaurant I've been in.
We had a really excellent meal here, with an itison voucher which more than paid for even just one of our meals! We both selected main and dessert - and given the mains have such quality as venison and cod, these are not just a standard burger or fish supper. Adding a substantial dessert (the crumble is my top tip), and you’re quids in! The waiting staff were all great, with just enough attendance to not feel crowded, and all chatted for a minute, making you feel relaxed with the servers. Well done to whomever trained them. Having been here for drinks a number of times on rugby days, we’d always planned to return for food. We’re very glad we did!
I highly recommend The Voyage of Buck. It is a charming traditional gastro pub, with emphasis on the gastro—the food is some of the best I have had in Edinburgh; and the value for money is incredible. The menu is creative and varied; the beer is fresh from the tap; the wine is delicious. Although I did not try any, they have an impressive range of cocktails, too. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The pub is relaxing and cozy and not too quiet or too loud. The Voyage of Buck is a great place to come for a nice dinner. My only complaint is that the toilets really are not clean at all; run-down pubs in rougher areas have cleaner toilets than these. But this is an easy fix and I really have no complaints otherwise. This is perhaps my favorite restaurant in Edinburgh; and I have been to many.
Came for lunch. Colleague made the reservation and they gave us the option between two tables. There were some people seated that came in without reservations as well. The service was great. I had the cod, colleague had the duck and we split potato dish. It was fantastic. I believe the cod was gluten free as well. I'll for sure be back!
Great spot for drinks and dinner. Fun staff, great service, tasty food, great craft cocktails, all in an updated charming olde pub building. Highly recommended.
Love this place. Only been for drinks but great selection of beers, wine, and cocktails. Dead friendly.
Had some amazing cocktails over the course of two nights. Staff is friendly and happy to make suggestions. Will gladly come back when I’m in town again!
Really great food (we had rump steak and chicken breast), wide selection of beers and cocktails. Friendly atmosphere and excellent staff.
A classic Edinburgh pub with wonderful cocktails and food. Feels unchanged in years, which is a good thing. No need to change when it works so well. Black Opium Negroni (poppy seeds and popular liquor added) very special
Just a couple of pints to get out of the cold for a wee while. Great range of beers.
Lovely food, not too many options but a wide range! Cocktails were very tasty, many options so something to suit everyone All the waiters were great, though the highlight was the amazing bartender/waiter with the lovely beard/manbun as they were so friendly, entertaining and enthusiastic throughout We’ll definitely be back!
Exceptional service, beutiful atmosphere and the food was delicious. Had a group Christmas dinner here and it was fantastic.
Small but great food menu, more 'gastro' than traditional pub food. Good wine list and great cocktails. Good beer. Great service.
Had a lovely meal here on a Saturday evening and everything was lovely. We had 4 courses, a bottle of wine to share and a cocktail each and all totalled less than a hundred quid. The food was absolutely gorgeous. We had hummus, carrot tartine, risotto, chicken Kiev among other things. Everything was of a really good restaurant standard and certainly not bar food if you know what I mean. The wine was not heavily marked up supermarket plonk and more akin to something you'd find through a wine club. Really good. The chap who was our main waiter was great. On point, friendly and good fun and attentive. The other couple who brought some of the food and the wine were lovely too. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed. People eating, some having cocktails. Some just having a beer. Just what you want. We had an itison voucher which was good value so check that out online.
This beautifully designed cocktail bar and restaurant has one of the most prolific cocktail lists I have ever seen! We dined as a family and we each thoroughly enjoyed our various cocktail choices. We shared small plates at the recommendation of our waiter. The staff is so helpful and kind the whole dinner. Likely the best food we had in Edinburgh. I cannot recommend this gem of a restaurant enough,
We popped in for a couple of drinks and ended up having a blast. The cocktail menu is exciting and well presented. We met a nice chap on the bar called Luke and he recommended a couple cocktails to reconnect us to our scottish roots. “The sun also rises” was my favourite by far. Very friendly atmosphere and excellent service. Thank you. We will be back to try out the food soon :)
Great restaurant tucked away, serving class inspirational meals, and tasty cocktails at a good price. Daniel was our server and was very helpful and charming. A new menu which was delicious well done chef
Pub meets aesthetic bar; staff is absolutely lovely!
Stuart was lovely. Ducks were cool. Food was great. 👌🏻
First visit and won't be my last. Great menu, delicious food & wine and fantastic customer service, really felt spoilt 😘
Visiting from Australia -tonight we enjoyed two course dinner - steak entree; Hake in creamed leek sauce. Daughter loved breaded Ham Hock entree also the Hake. Great modern Scottish cuisine and delightful ambiance and service . Well done Chef and hospitality team 🙏
Awesome food, really interesting cocktails, great atmosphere, and great staff. We were gifted an itison voucher and had such a good time. Will def be back soon, really enjoyed it!
We went for dinner on Friday evening at 5:30pm and the place was packed and everyone sounded like they were having a great time. We walked in, found a member of staff and they quickly cleared a crowd from around a table to get us seated, delivered a bottle of water and glasses, poured for us and handed out the menu. She returned promptly to get our order for food and drinks. We both got cocktails ordered from a book's worth of choices. Took a bit of reading to decide. The food came soon after the drinks and was appetising and well presented. We had two courses ordered but eventually took a sweet to share between us. Dundee cake, St Andrews cheese and honey, different but it worked. By now it had quietened down a bit thank goodness. Enjoyed it.
Great atmosphere and service, small ish menu but nice choices and starters and mains were all very good. A mini negative for lemon tart as it needs something to balance as dessert (meringe and tart) too sweet but good otherwise. Sticky toffee pudding and custard was below average. But rest meal was very good and well balanced across 6 different dishes across group. Would recommend. And it's pet friendly which is always a plus.
Firstly, this is a pub.....a very nice pub. Service is very good and the place has a cosy atmosphere, but the choice of beers other than those perceived as mainstream, are now less than this bar stocked in the past. Great food ! Unfortunately though, the prices are a tad extreme - examples being... £8 per portion of olives/£12 minimum starter/£21 minimum (non veggie) main/cheapest wine £10 large glass/Cheapest cocktail (containing alc) £12. The two mains we received were very fashionably Small !! Delusions of grandeur re the pricing ? Most people if eating there will go once, but many wont return due to cost/value. It is a pub after all (did I mention that ? ;¬) )
Intended Valentines Day meal at a high end gastro pub didn’t go as expected… arrived at Bucks 5 minutes before our booking but our table wasn’t ready (previous diners were still on dessert) which wasn’t a major problem but a tad annoying. Got shown to the bar to order drinks while we waited but took a while to be served with walk ins being seen before us. 15 minutes after our booking started we were shown to our table - which to be fair was a lovely corner booth. Our meal was actually really good - tasty food, yummy cocktails and a good choice of Scottish produce. However, the second half of our meal was the main reason for our low review. Obviously it cannot be helped that Valentine’s was the same night as a big rugby match (which we actually watched ourselves at a pub before going to Bucks) but we didn’t expect a swarm of fans to come into the restaurant. Again, we understand the excitement but we booked a nice intimate dinner in what we thought was an up-market gastropub (the prices alone reflect this!) but ended up eating in what felt like a Spoons. Noise and atmosphere we can deal with but fans were literally standing downing pints and shouting right next to our table, others leaning on our booth while we ate. We felt like the staff should have done more to cordon off the restaurant from the bar and massive crowds but instead large rowdy groups were allowed to stand between the restaurant tables. Not what we expected and not what we paid over £120 for. Didn’t think that was the vibe at all. Felt very forgotten about/that paying restaurant goers weren’t as valued as walk-ins….a real shame.
Resident mouse! I was in with a few friends and we spotted a mouse crawling across the floor. The waiters response was “I see you’ve met our resident”. Not the most hygienic to have a known infestation and do nothing about it, especially for a place that serves food. Good cocktails! But won’t be back.
Lovely staff, great for a drink or cocktail. AWEFUL food. The chef likes to do his own thing and swap things up which ruined the taste of the food completely. Rhubarb pudding was inedible, fruit was tough and tasteless. Plus for 12 of us cost over £300, we paid the tip nearly twice - mix up over the money and we asked for a meal with potatoes to swapped to chips but they couldn’t change this for us!? So cost us a bomb, didn’t get what we wanted and tasted awful. Very disappointed with the food.
I don't normally give restaurant reviews but this restaurant in my neighbourhood - the West End of Edinburgh- warrants one, and a negative one, mainly because of the bad service. My friend and I walked into the bar/ restaurant last evening and as we were not greeted by any of the staff, we found an empty table and sat down. After five minutes and still not getting any service, I walked up to the bar to request for a food menu. A staff, a male with glasses, took on a rather hostile approach and said in a rather unfriendly manner they were not serving food to walk-in guests. I was a bit taken aback as there were no signs anywhere in the restaurant that indicated this and surely staff could adopt a more approachable attitude? I then mentioned we had been waiting for service for 20 mins (sure, a bit of an exaggeration) only to be "corrected" by him that he had seen us walk into the restaurant one minute ago (that was wrong as it was at at least five mins) and repeated that they weren't serving food to walk-in customers. He didn't even say he would come to our table to take our order for drinks - nothing to indicate any form of service at all. In a bit of a shock, I walked back to the table after which my friend and I left the restaurant. As paying customers we aren't expecting the world, just some decent service and politeness. Why should we spend money at a place we are made to feel unwelcome? The Green Room next door on the contrary has friendly, hospitable staff with great food. If you are in the West End, I would suggest you go there instead.
Left a crowed pub in Edinburgh where we had a walk in and a table was available to a pre booked table here at the voyage of buck to be told “oh sorry we forgot your booking.. i didn’t even see that” - the guy was nice enough about it but to be told i just never saw your booking woop? Got told to wait at the bar - no seats - no accommodation of a free drink while we wait and just sorta left. I understand they are busy and again the server was not rude but do not operate a booking service if you are not going to check that booking service? Very annoyed and appalled at the unprofessionalism. Again i want to reiterate im aware it’s human error but i would have appreciated a more genuine apology.
The welcome was frosty and the white wine was warm. Staff were incredibly unimpressive - and we left promptly after a bottle of wine which was room temperature at best - despite it being a Saturday afternoon, and a party of 4 starting a night out with guest from overseas. I’m not surprised by the amount of negative reviews over a long period. It’s disappointing that there’s no evidence of improvement. We won’t be returning. The male server with the brown, long hair provided exceptionally poor and unprofessional service and we were taken aback by his lack of hospitality which was only balanced by his air of superiority.
