Opinions de SGD Tofu House El Camino Real
This is the best Korean soondubu tofu house in the Bay. Even better than their other locations. Flavors taste just like in Korea. They always provide extra sides and the Haemul pajeon (seafood pancake) is crispy and soft on the inside Make sure if you’re pescatarian to order the soup vegetarian because they put meat in it.
Tasty, healthy, clean food served by a friendly team. My husband and I always get their spicy soft tofu soup and it comes with free purple sticky rice that we love. The soup is delicious as well. Generous sides and free rice soup when you dine in house. Also had their delicious ginseng chicken soup when I was battling a cold and was fully healed. I love the attitude of the staff and they're extremely kind. I remember when my chicken was brought out they shared a bowl of salt with me and instructed I sprinkle it on top which was helpful since I didn't know how to eat the soup (it was my first time). What really wowed me was their consistently high quality service whether I'm ordering food or not. When I later called to ask them where they bought their beautiful and insulating double layers steel cups for tea, the owner who didn't originally remember the store, checked to find the right store after our call and sent me the photo and phone number of the store they bought it from. Amazing and just an extension of the same kind experience I had during my dine in dinner. Best Korean restaurant in town!
Aaaaaa steamed pork, oyster with spicy veggies is a bomb, I do enjoy this dish. Pork is well steamed with seasoning, the sweetness and tenderness are at the right place, amazing taste. It is not easy to cook pork well. Everything is not too much salty (as common Korean dish). The service is quick and well organized. Even I am not a fan of Korean cuisine but this place makes me want to go back again.
Came here late after 9pm for dinner and there were still several tables of customers here. The staff is mostly one no-fluff man, he gets us everything we asked for but is a man of few words. I do hear him explaining things when customers don't understand something on the menu. He works hard. The food is really good, I have no complaints. The banchan (side dishes) are fresh and good. We loved the kimchi, still very crunchy and not too fermented yet. I was recovering from a cold so I got the combination beef and seafood tofu soup non-spicy (white) and it was really good. The stonepot beef bibimbap came on a stone plate instead of the bowl which was the first time I've seen it like that. I love the addition on burdock at this location. Similiar to other korean places now a days, prices start from $20 and up.
After DoorDashing this place many times, today we finally dined in — wow! We knew the food was already great, but wow, it’s even better in person. The already generous portions get larger. The flavors feel way deeper. And although the ambiance does not compete with many Bay Area establishments, it does feel very authentic. Plus, the speedy and kind service makes up for the lack of pizzazz.
People used to say that it was delicious, but now the taste has changed and they don’t want to go because it doesn‘t taste good. Today I went to have lunch with my husband after a long time. They also prepared an apron for me, and everyone was so kind and the food tasted good. I will come to eat again next time.
We've been to SGD before a few times. I"m surprised I haven't wrote a review yet. SGD ("So Gong Dong" on my receipt) is conveniently located on El Camino Real. There tofu dishes are usually what I order. This time, I got their classic #1 Original Soft Tofu with beef, spicy level 3, $21. That hit the spot. It came out boiling hot. I like how clean tasting it was with a bit of spice. My tofu salad appetizer $6 was mostly iceberg lettuce. The #27 bibimbob, seafood and vegetables in stoneware $25 was also good. Overall great meal. Service was excellent. Well done everyone at SGD Tofu House.
We had a fantastic experience at this Korean restaurant! We ordered the BBQ beef, seafood tofu soup, and dumpling tofu soup—all of them were absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The portions were generous, and everything tasted fresh and authentic. What really stood out, though, was the service. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, and they even gave balloons to our kids, which made their day. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Much delish! The seafood tofu soup was heart warming and paired so well with the mixed brown rice. The seafood pancake was perfectly crispy and the sauce with it was sweet and tangy, absolutely mouthwatering. The banchan was so generous and the service was so friendly! Would hope to come again!
Been here a few days ago. The side dishes are really good. And they offer free refills to all side dishes! The service here is very good as well. They respond quickly. Unlike other Korean restaurants refilling the side dishes slowly and unwillingly, they happily respond to all our requests! We ordered tofu soup combo and we both like our food. Highly recommend this place!
This Korean restaurant has very friendly staff and they try to make you feel at home. We were there for lunch and there were a lot of diners. My tofu soup was not very hot, but it had the right flavor, we ordered the bbq beef plate which was full, but did not feel like bbq. The banchan was very good.
Recently visited this place for dinner Its a spacious restaurant with plenty of seating, making it ideal for large groups or a casual meal out. However, the interiors feel somewhat lackluster and could use a bit more charm. For vegetarians, there are only a few veggie options available, and the selection of vegetarian sides is quite limited. This might leave vegetarian diners wanting more variety. On the upside, the service is impressively fast, ensuring you won’t have to wait long for your food. While the restaurant's ambiance and vegetarian offerings could be improved, if you're looking for a quick and homely Korean meal, this place might just hit the spot.
The raw marinated crab and seafood pancake were excellent! However, the side dishes and fish egg tofu soup were not as flavorful as expected. It has its unique charm though! I heard the restaurant has been open for over twenty years, which is quite impressive. Next time, I'll ask about their signature dishes. If they're delicious, I'll add another star!
I have went to many tofu house franchise locations and I would say this is not their top ones. The server was very friendly and welcoming, but the food is okay compared to other places while being extremely expensive, ~$5-10 more than other tofu house locations. The banchans dishes here felt like they weren’t fresh and felt left out or reused, and as Korean staple, their kimchi is very bland. The main dishes tho like the tofu soup and Bimibap and bbq beef was good though. But having higher prices for the dishes while other locations have it for cheaper def brings the rating down imo.
If they’re going to charge 47 dollars for kalbi they should at least make sure it’s cooked properly. Got a plate of unseared meat that looked like it was cooked on a lukewarm pan. Been going to the SGD chain as a reliable place for Korean food for years and this is by far the most disappointing experience I’ve ever had.
In short: Expensive, above average food with horrible service. Went in for an early dinner and we were the only table. Throughout the meal there was zero service other than putting down the initial round of water and food. There were two servers on duty. No check-in, water refill, or small plates refill.
This place has really gone down the tubes. 22 dollars for tofu soup per person? It doesn’t even taste that good, it’s too salty. Shrimp are not fresh. Service is terrible they do not refill your tea nor your side dishes. Terrible service for 22 dollars each? No thank you. Will never come to ‘SDG Tofu’ again.
