I had an amazing experience at The wine house on valentines day weekend! The food was absolutely delicious—I had the Smoked Salmon, and my husband had 8oz New Zealand grass fed filet mignon, and they were packed with flavor. The service was outstanding, with the staff being attentive and friendly. A special shoutout to the Manager,Ashleigh who personally came to our table to check in and make sure we were enjoying our meal. Her hospitality made the experience even better. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back!
We went to this restaurant for dinner and were completely satisfied with our experience. All the dishes were freshly made and cooked with locally sourced ingredients. The food was delicious, and there was a great selection of wine. The recommended wine paired perfectly with the food. The service was excellent, and the ambiance was great, too. Overall, this restaurant is the perfect choice for dining in the area.
A wonderful first visit. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. We had the warm shrimp salad and the best burger I've had in a long time, the Kiwi cheeseburger with a fried egg. Second visit, for dinner this time, was equally wonderful. Bottles of wine very reasonable priced, save $10 when bought to go.
This small restaurant is filled with wine bottles and has great delicious food. We got the short rib with asparagus. The asparagus was perfectly done with a crunch, but soft and there is a light garlic taste to it to give it a delicious flavor. The best asparagus I have had compared to many restaurants. The short rib was soft and juicy and had a great flavor. We also got the crab cakes which is a decent size and it came with string beans which were also cooked perfectly and with a tasty light flavor. We have just had the prefix menu for restaurant week and ordered the pork belly with mashed potatoes and that was delicious. The pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and also very delicious. The crab cake with potatoes were delicious with some garlic seasoning. The crab cakes had very little filler and was deliciously browned. Also try the mussels, it is delicious. From the lunch menu, the salmon salad with capers, grilled onion and asparagus was delicious. The salmon is from the Faroe island so it is absolutely delicious with the right amount of fat on it to make it flavorful. Everything is fresh and flavors are perfectly savory with a balanced gourmet taste. Everything in this restaurant is made with detailed attention to the ingredients used and the chef here knows how to balance all of the flavors to yield incredibly tasty plates. This is such a small, quaint and nice cute tucked away gem of a restaurant with truly gourmet food. The chefs here are really good what what they do. They have wine tastings on Saturdays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The wine is excellent here paired with the food which is very gourmet. They have a lot of wine classes events and wine tasting events here. This place is a gem! They have daily specials which range from halibut to braised lamb shank. The braised lamb shank is absolutely delicious served with potatoes and beans. The flavor is perfectly seasoned with the correct seasoned savory flavor. The meat is absolutely gorgeous and appearance and flavor and falls off the bone, tender and delicious. The Icelandic cod is incredible! The flavor has a hint of citrus and olive and tomatoes with garlic. The filet of cod is generous and the flavor of the entire plate was so delicious! Definitely an entree to try if you like fish. We will be back again for more wonderful delicious gourmet food with their fresh weekly specials!
We’ve been wanting to check out some more of the restaurants in Old Town Fairfax. The Wine House did not disappoint! I had the pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and green beans. The tenderloin was wrapped in an olive tapenade and prosciutto. It was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious! For dessert we had the Dark Chocolate Terrine with espresso cream and toasted hazelnuts. It was decadent and wonderful. Of course the wine selection was great. Looking forward to going back again.
We love the Wine House! They always have great food and service. We like going on holidays and special occasions (Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc.) because they always have a fun menu or a multiple course menu to try new things. We have had their brunch and dinner. The dessert menu is great; definitely try the bread pudding!
A well executed French bistro - menu hits all the right notes and spans vegetarian, fish, chicken and red meat. We ordered broadly and every dish was well cooked/prepared, beautifully presented and very tasty. Wine choices are from a menu of by the glass options, or from the extensive selection that lines the walls of the store. Price ranges from very cheap to very expensive, so something for every budget. Staff are attentive and service is flawless. The restaurant has two sittings - 6pm and 8pm - but we never felt rushed. Would definitely eat here again.
This is one of my favorite places to go. It’s small it’s quaint and it is a small family owned restaurant with great food and knowledgeable staff. Keep in mind that they only serve wine champagne and they serve some types of beers. I don’t think they call them beer. But, it is a wonderful wine place to go. They do have tastings that they do at a very reasonable price and it’s so much fun to get to go and do that. They also do specialty food and wine pairings there’s so much that’s just wonderful about this quaint Restaurant. I do have a recommend them you’re not going to be disappointed. I feel that their prices are extremely reasonable. They have a variety of charcuterie and appetizers, as well as for entrées, salads, soups, etc. they also have specials with different items every week. I find that they easily accommodate my gluten sensitivity. They typically have gluten-free crackers, for when I want their charcuterie. They accommodate my meals as well. They have outdoor seating, which is perfect when the weather is nice. I sometimes come in by myself and sit at the bar or it’s a great date night place or even a place to hang out with friends.
The service IS IMPECCABLE, our server who's name I FORGOT IM SO SORRY. She was great and so so so so sweet. I'll get her name next time I promise. We sat outside and shared some plates as a small group. Food was very very good, definitely recommend the tiramsu as dessert. 10/10
Went for brunch. Prixe fixe brunch option is an outrageous value for $25. Our server Theresa(?) was so warm, attentive, and efficient. Really loved it and definitely plan on coming back, not just for brunch.
Best crab benedict and shrimp & grits in a very long time! Also, Lisa is a great team member, and we will be back many times.
Service is always fantastic and the food is on point. The bread pudding is one of the best desserts I've ever had.
We've been coming off and on since about late 2019. Food and service is good as always. They changed up the wine menu some and we missed the old wines they used to have on the list (ie. the Riesling they used to have 2019-2021ish (Mosel, Germany) was swapped for a different brand and location). Food wise we highly recommend the shrimp and grits. Also got the fries with aioli.. amazing 👏. These have been are tried and true menu items. We definitely plan to come back again.
Saturday brunch was delicious! Can't beat $15 bottomless mimosas! Interesting American menu. Food was really good. I ordered the roasted beets w/ feta and the Wine House Omelet (Bacon, Mushroom and Cheddar served with Roasted Potatoes). It was all very tasty and big portions. Sat outside on the patio. Plenty of tables, most with umbrellas. Good service. I'll definitely go back again.
The last night of restaurant week. My fiance and I went out for an evening to check out this spot new to us. I had the tomato basil soup because it was a particularly cold night. After that was the salmon, so delicious and the. The chocolate mousse (not pictures, I ate it to fast) was last and all were paired with a wonderful full bodies pitite sirah from Vinum Cellers. We qull definitely be going back here.
One of the best restaurant experiences i’ve had. Its a good place for conversation and blowing off some steam while eating good food and wine. I got the risotto and fries. The staff was wonderful too- excellent service.
All excellent across the board. Every Wine by the Glglass seems markedly different than others. Which is good. Amazing entres. Alison is great
What a cute place for dinner paired with beautiful wines! It's pretty small but they have a bar, high tops, and regular tables.
Great brunch and super nice staff
My "go-to" restaurant in Fairfax! Friendly, casual, great wine list, and good food!
Great dishes, cozy atmosphere, great value. Will be back!
Delicious! Tried the mussels, the tomato basil sauce is the best. Also tried the charcuterie and cheese plate, both had a great variety and tasted great. The braised short ribs were tender and juicy with very nice flavor. Same goes for the pan seared duck. Our server, Anya, was amazing. She was very helpful and attentive. Perfect atmosphere for date night or going out with friends. Great food and great service!
We're back! After moving away 6 years ago--and after years of being Wine House denizens--we were back in town and went to the Wine House to celebrate our anniversary. And, thanks to the wonderful Teresa, we did it in style! We started with sharing a glass of the blanc de blanc. It was so good we decided to share a bottle over dinner. And for dinner we decided on the 3-course prix fixe menu. Paula had the burrata cheese salad first, followed by the halibut. Rich had the chorizo ceviche, followed by the crab risotto. We each had dessert, but had to take them to-go because we were stuffed! And the wine! Awesome. Teresa helped us with a couple of bottles we purchased retail (great prices!) to bring to friends later in the week. This capped off a wonderful experience. We were so well served! You know how things grow more fondly with age and distance? And sometimes you come back and it's just not as good as you remember? Not with The Wine House! It was every bit as good as we've known--as we've held in our hearts. The proprietor, Michael, and the general manager, Dinah, operate perhaps the finest restaurant in Fairfax City. We miss them, and it, so very, very much. Please be our surrogates and come enjoy the best they have to offer. And take a bottle or two home!
My lunch partner and I had a flatiron steak in a wonderful sauce, with great fries, an asparagus soup, and a chopped salad with grilled chicken breast. All were delicious and good-sized. We also picked glasses of the server's recommended bordeaux, which also was excellent. Server was very nice, helpful and timely. Restaurant is not inexpensive, but certainly reasonably priced for its value. I'll be back.
Absolutely loved our experience at The Wine House! Impeccable service, delicious food, and a fantastic wine list. We sat outside and ordered the baguette, steak and frites, and the seafood stew. Friends ordered the mussels and the cod. Everything was amazing. They were also highly accommodating with my dairy allergy--something that can be a challenge at French-inspired restaurants. We will definitely be back!
Great service & tasty food. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and they all work together to make it a great experience for the customer. I love restaurants where you can tell the staff enjoys their jobs because it makes your experience better. To top it off, the food is delicious, feels higher end for Fairfax City and well priced. Will be returning, great place for a cute romantic date night! The passion fruit crème brûlée was the perfect way to end the meal!
This is a fantastic hidden gem in Fairfax. It's been around long enough to be well known, so either show up early or call ahead to see about reservations. The staff are great, friendly and very helpful when selecting a wine or beer. They also never make you feel rushed. The food, though, is the star. Absolutely stunningly great food. This is a great place to go. It's cozy, romantic, warm and inviting.
We went on Valentine's day and the place was nicely decorated for the occasion. The peach moscato was delicious and refreshing. The halibut and filet mignon were cooked just right and tasted great. Overall, a great experience and can't wait to return.
Lisa our server was amazing. During the wine test she made sure that we were taken care of and made sure our needs were met. She is amazing and very knowledgeable. I will definitely come back because of the service Lisa provided.
I enjoy this place for a quick glass of wine. Never eaten anything there but I love the atmosphere. If you are into nice cozy places to enjoy a moderately priced glass of vino, you might enjoy this place. I do. Would gladly go back.
I had an awesome experience at The Wine House earlier this week! They seem to be doing a great job with COVID-19 cleaning procedures and social distancing (I loved the outdoor patio). Theresa was my server and she gave me some recommendations for different wines to try - she even brought me a tasting of one she thought I might like! I only had time to order a side salad but I will definitely be returning to try a dinner entree soon because everything smelled so good. Also, their prices are VERY reasonable for Fairfax County.
Living in Springfield we decided to try the Wine House on a whim for date night. Really glad we did. It’s upscale but does not feel stuffy. Wine was excellent and food good. They were able to customize their menu to meet our dietary preferences and needs. We ordered the pear and burrata salad and French onion soup to start. Both were excellent. For our mains we ordered steak, asparagus, and their Champagne and Fries. 🤌 We will be coming back!
Food was spot on delicious and not too much not too little - just right. Server was amazing and full of smile offering us options / recommendations making the dinner eventful.
Good wine bar in downtown Fairfax where you can order wine from their retail store as well. They had good food. We got the steak frites and halibut special
Came in to look around with a friend who is visiting me for the holidays and came out with three excellent wines. Lisa was a pleasure to work with and allowed us to sample a few we had questions about. She guided us to exactly what we were looking for; will definitely be back and hopefully Lisa will be there to help us again.
A nice upscale, but cozy restaurant with a wall of wine and a resident sommelier or as we call him the "wine guy" who can help you with wine pairings. We like the well-considered charcuterie and cheese plate offerings as well as many of the entrees. This is a good place for a romantic evening out as well as a girls night out! Parking in the nearby garage is handy especially on rainy nights.
We requested a Prix Fixe menu for my wife's birthday. We invited 4 couples to join us for dinner and had an absolutely wonderful and delicious dinner. The staff were funny, attentive and accommodating. Best of all, my wife gave me an A+ for putting it together and I have The Wine House and Dinah, the owner to thank! Appreciated and will be back!
Great ambience with a bit of a local neighborhood feel. But not at all stuffy. We sat at the bar on a Thursday evening- the restaurant was packed every table and bar seat ended up full by 7:30. Wonderful wine list. My husband and I both tried the sommelier pick (white and red). Both on point and paired perfectly with our entrees. The shrimp and grits was pretty good, although the shrimp was a little bit fishy. My husband’s steak frites was also pretty good. Nothing mind blowing but nonetheless enjoyable. For dessert we split the bread pudding which was to die for!! HUGE but we ate every last crumb. Nice port selection as well. Would also be a great happy hour spot for wine and some apps or cheeses.
I enjoyed the Wine House on a Friday evening with my partner during Restaurant Week. Despite a challenge locating parking as there is a sign at North and University pointing in three directions, we found free parking about a block away. There were limitations with our ordering unfortunately. The Restaurant Week Menu was the only menu available allowing us only to order from these sole offerings. At 35 dollars a person, the menu presents three courses, appetizer, entrée, and dessert. However, the patron can only choose 2 of the three courses for the 35 dollar price. Of course, the option to order one of the dessert items a la carte is available. My recommendation would be to offer an option to increase the price to include the three courses and a glass of wine (it is the Wine House after all). What is the difference of 10 or 20 dollars to provide the patron with an optimal dining experience? If not, offer the full menu and the restaurant flight as an option. However, my guess is that the Restaurant Week menu would be inferior compared to the full range of options if offered along side each other. Hence the reason for me subtracting a star.... In closing, the appetizer wild boar sausage was tender, succulent, and paired well with the light mash potatoes. The beef burgundy was extremely flavorful, obviously slow-roasted, and paired well with the gnocchi, and the wine-based vegetable gravy with bacon. The crab cake with a side of fries and garden salad was light but filling. The wine we tried were both excellent and memorable. I would visit again. There is covered, outdoor-patio seating and indoor seating available with comfortable seating.
Good food but spotty service. seating arrangements are strange, some tables have partitions and stools are uncomfortable.
Food was fantastic. Bordeaux wine was excellent. Danielle was awesome.
Pleasant experience with very good service. Felt served and relaxed. Food is very good.
Had a nice brunch at the wine house, smaller menu but good specials and large wine and beer list.
Some friends invited me to tag along with their plans and I'm glad I agreed. The wine selection is dizzying and the food was delicious. We had appetizers and entrees, all of which were beautiful on the plate and wonderful to eat. It felt cozy and friendly.
Great place to come for a glass of wine and a good steak. Tried the seafood stew this time and it was pretty good. Friends had the baguette with smoked salmon which looked delicious and the beef stew was good. Service was very good.
I have heard about this restaurant from friends. I finally had a chance to visit. I was there during restaurant week. The menu was pre-fixed. I was impressed with how well trained the employees are and how well coordinated they are. The kitchen workers know what they’re doing..my meal was superb. They have a great wine selection. I can’t wait to visit when the sommelier is present…I hear he is great and knowledgeable. Thanks for a great experience.
My wife and I had a great time here. The service was great and it's extremely convenient with the parking right there. The presentation was great for the wine and the food. Our server was friendly and prompt/attentive. My one and only complaint is that the servings of wine were a tad on the skimpy side. Other than that, I'd definitely go back.
With a reservation for my dad’s birthday, we didn't realize you had to specify what kind of table you would get when you reserve. My dad just had knee surgery and is unable to sit at high top tables. Despite being early to our reservation and the restaurant being only 1/3 full, the hostess told us we were only able to be sat at a high top because we didn’t request a different kind of table. As an employee at a restaurant I understand when places are busy and have less flexibility, but this just seemed like something they should have been able to solve. We ended up leaving and luckily were able to get seating somewhere nearby, but this was a very frustrating experience for us.
Have been there a few times; won't be going back. The wine and cheese selection is nice, but overpriced compared to other places. Entrees are poor at best. My wife's crab cakes were light on the crab and heavy on the breading; still, the flavor was nice. My Risotto; however, was very disappointing. The vegetables tasted like they'd been frozen, and the sauce tasted like it came from a jar. Service is uniformly poor, and the staff does not seem to be particularly educated about their wines - which is sort of weird. After all, what good does it do to have a good wine selection if the wait staff can't make a recommendation? Our waiter spoke to us twice; once to take the order and once to trash another member of the wait staff who came by to see how we were doing. We were never asked if the food or wines were satisfactory. It's a shame, because this place could be so much more.
We used to eat every week at the Wine House. Great food, great waitstaff. Then the “hostess” struck. On the first occasion, she insisted we vacate our table after 90 minutes because she needed it for someone else. We had not finished our wine and the restaurant was not full. We didn’t go back for a few months, but this weekend our friend selected it for his birthday dinner. The reservation was made several days in advance for our preferred table. The reservation was for three and specified that the table was needed for one of us who was hearing impaired and needed to be in the corner. When we arrived the “hostess” refused to seat us at the table we had reserved because it seated four and we were three. She was quite rude. I hate the fact that we won’t go back, because I loved this restaurant. The “hostess” ought to find another line of work.
