Great good, great experience. BYOB and enjoy from the menu standards, or try one of the specials.
Excellent service .exquisite meal that's well-prepared. nice varied menu .I love this place!
Great service, great food We sat outside and it was beautiful
Food was fresh, nice presentation, great portions and very flavorful. Worth repeat visits
This place is excellent. Pork chop was so tender. Brined in apple cider I believe. Highly recommend. It a very quaint byob that serves top notch food.
We dined at Matt’s Red Rooster in Flemington on Saturday and had the pleasure of sitting at the chef’s table—what an unbelievable experience! From start to finish, everything was exceptional. The food was absolutely outstanding—each dish was crafted with incredible flavor and attention to detail. The service was just as impressive—warm, professional, and perfectly timed without ever feeling rushed. The atmosphere was cozy yet vibrant, creating the perfect setting for such a special meal. Highly recommend it for anyone looking great food, amazing service, and a memorable evening.
It was our second time and another EXCELLENT culinary experience! Our server, David, was exceptional.. friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful with his recommendations. Our food was perfectly prepared and our desserts were scrumptious! Thank you for another great experience. Can’t recommend enough. We will be back!
This was the first time my family visited Matt's. It was a birthday celebration. Our server was Maritza. She was absolutely wonderful. She was both friendly & professional, offering to take as many pictures as we wanted. The food was scrumptious. We tried the 4-course Summer Special menu and it did not disappoint. Each dish was just as good as the one before, especially the addicting Corn Bread Pudding. What a wonderful experience. We will certainly be back and definitely looking forward to it.
Fantastic! I hadn't been here in a while, but it was just as wonderful as I remembered. The menu selection is wonderful and the hardest part is deciding what to get. The service is always A+ and very friendly and attentive. I would definitely suggest making reservations, as they do get busy. Perfection from start to finish.
Matt’s Red Rooster Grill is an absolute gem! From start to finish, the experience was outstanding. The sous vide pork belly appetizer was perfectly prepared—rich, flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. For my main course, I had the chicken paillard, which was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and truly special—perfect for both a night out with friends or a more intimate dinner. On top of that, the staff was lovely—attentive, friendly, and made the evening feel seamless. Highly recommend Matt’s Red Rooster Grill to anyone looking for an amazing dining experience. I can’t wait to come back!
So glad we found this diamond in the rough during our first visit to Flemington. We started by sharing the fantadtic grilled romaine. Then my wife really enjoyed the wagyu flatiron steak special, and I the cherry cola short ribs. And something told me that we should save room for dessert - and so glad we did! The main floor seating (there's also second floor seating) was small and comfortable, with the kitchen in view toward the back. And all of the staff were very friendly and professional, especially our server David. It's BYOB, so don't forget your favorite bottle to bring along. Definitely recommend this place!
Matt’s Red Rooster is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warmth and professionalism from the incredible servers. Dan, in particular, always exceeds expectations with his impeccable service. The farm-to-table concept truly shines here, with each dish bursting with freshness and flavor. Whether it’s seafood or steak, every bite is cooked to perfection. And their bread pudding is always so unique but delicious. We also love their unique grilled romaine salad. I appreciate how they adapt their menus with the seasons, ensuring a fresh culinary experience every visit. Matt’s Red Rooster has quickly become our go-to spot, and we’ve never been disappointed. Highly recommend!
Wow, talk about great food and service! Make a reservation, the food here is amazing. The cream of mushroom soup is definitely award winning as they say. The chicken with spinach and parmesan was awesome, so was the duck! Dessert was incredible. Service was awesome. You can bring your own liquor. We brought champagne and they put it on ice for us. Also opened our wine for us, etc. Great experience. Try the oysters and filet!
I've lived here for 6 years and never knew, "Matt's Red Rooster" was an extraordinary very fine restaurant. Great menu, large portions and personal gracious service. How could you name a place, "Matt's Red Rooster," and expect tourists and newcomers to know it's an upscale fine dining experience? It is. Take a look at the menu and decide for yourself: cold watermelon soup and even a 30-day dry aged N.Y strip coupled with a BYOB benefit. Take a gander at this shrimp and al dente basil pasta dish.
I visited Matt's again last week. You have to experience the food yourself to understand how good it is. But more than this Dave and grille Master Randall make this a not to miss restaurant. Their attention to detail and presentation will be hard to find in other restaurants. We always feel like family. My only regret is I didn't know of Matt's sooner. Jon & Julie Rowland
Best porkchop ever bar none! If you like porkchops you owe it to yourself to visit Matt's and get this dish. I have know idea how this cut is made to be sooo..tender!
Had the wife and two kids (10 and 12) there tonight for the tasting menu and it was fantastic. From the oysters to the filet, the Salmon to the bread pudding, A+ all around. Thanks Matt and team for the GREAT meal!
What a wonderful spot in downtown Flemington! Located just off the main drag in an old home, this place is as charming as the food is delicious. There’s outdoor seating on street level, front porch, main level, and up a fairly steep flight of stairs on the second level. It’s BYOB so come prepared! Loved the atmosphere. Excellent service provided by David. And the meal? Oh, the meal. Bread service was great. Warm bread with a crisp crust, delicious salty butter, and an apple balsamic spread which was a bit tart for my taste. From their summer menu we shared risotto cakes topped with lump crab, fresh corn, lime, and honey. What a great combo! Then on to the grilled romaine salad. Somehow chef was able to impart a smokey grilled char while maintaining the crispness of the lettuce. A bit too much cheese for my taste and the cheese was like pre-shredded from the market, but tasty nonetheless. The risotto with scallops was wonderful. Appreciated that the scallops were not overcooked. The carrot and ginger flavors were lovely. Decaf coffee served with a mini biscotti — nice touch! Even my mint chocolate chip ice cream was attractively presented. But do wish I’d ordered the fruit and marscapone dessert; tasted my sister’s and it was awesome. Overall a wonderful evening. Will most definitely return next time I’m in this part of the world!
Went to Matts Red Rooster for last minute dinner. Have been before, but its been some years. Incredible dinner, exceeded my expectations. Had the surf and turf. Atmosphere and service was outstanding.
We have had a terrific evening celebrating my birthday at Matt's. The service was very attentive and it felt like we were at home in the cozy atmosphere. We started with the bacon corn chowder and a goat cheese and beet salad called the rocket salad. Delishish! For an appetizer we choose the seafood pot pie witch had a array of seafood and vegetables with a puff pastery on top. The sauce was AMAZING. For our main course my wife choose the scallops and risotto. She did have to send them back to be cooked a bit longer however they took care of it right away. The risotto would have been better without the peas but still a delight. I choose the grigstown chicken that had spinach and roasted red tomatoes in a fantastic cream sauce. I don't think I have EVER had chicken that tasted so good. The portions were very generous and we had to take some food home. The restraunt is BYOB. A fantastic evening. Thank you Matt's red rooster for a memorable dining experience
Cindy is the most pleasant waitress I have come across in years. The oyster special is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! Go off the beaten path and get the specials! The shrimp and homemade pasta is also amazing. Keep it up MRR!
A plus all around! Unique experience. Funky yet upscale decor along with sweet, personable servers makes eating at a "fancy" place feel laid back and non judgemental. The food was out of this world amazing. I knew going in I was getting the grilled romaine and it did not disappoint! My bf says the crab cakes are the best hes ever had, and that was my meal! His appetizer, the pork belly, was melt in your mouth delish. The best ive ever had! I cant say enough about this place... EAT AT MATT'S RED ROOSTER GRILL!
Great dinner at Matt's Red Rooster Grill! Love the space- old home turned into beautiful restaurant. Food was excellent. I loved the special short rib entree. And, it's BYOB, always a bonus. Service was friendly and efficient. Next time I will definitely ask to sit at the bar to watch the team work the kitchen!
When we moved to Flemington two years ago, we've been dying to try Matt's Red Rooster. We finally had a chance and ordered pickup for our anniversary dinner. We have a 2 year 8 month old son so dining is difficult lately. When I placed the order I mentioned how excited we were to try it and that it was our anniversary dinner. Matt's Red Rooster went above and beyond by placing "Happy Anniversary" tags on our dessert! That was very thoughtful! I ordered the Cowboy Rob Eye medium rare with red potato mashed and mixed vegetables which was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the Halibut special. We also ordered the stuffed tomatoes with braised short ribs, mozzarella and basil pesto. For dessert, we ordered the vanilla cheesecake and flourless chocolate tort. They both came with fresh homemade whipped cream, raspberry sauce and caramel sauce. All I can say is WOW! Everything was so good and amazing. The food was fresh with top notch ingredients. I also loved the place when I picked up the food and can't wait to dine there. Matt's Red Rooster is a gem and I highly recommend it!!
8 Star Rating for Matt's Red Rooster when only Five is allowed...The hospitality, The Atmosphere, The Service provided by the Staff amplified the great meal we had. Our group was relatively tired from a full day at Old York Cellars and simply looking forward to a great meal. Upon entering the building on a crowded Saturday night, the smiles of the servers and the greeting recieved set the tone for my guests. The friendliness was noticeable and was our first topic of conversation among friends......The quality of any restaurant will be determined by its staff and this team delivered. The walk upstairs leading to our dining room felt inviting and the atmosphere was like we just arrived home from college and the home made cooking was waiting for us..... The table set up was simple, but the space was the perfect place for a family meal. I personally enjoyed the 'The Classic' Center Cut Filet with bleu cheese crust....medium rare and just right. Special Thanks to Matt and his entire team for making our 50th birthday celebration memorable. Matt took a moment to stop by and we won't forget Matt's Red Rooster Grill.....(friends are actually planning to come back in a few weeks.)
Matt's Red Roster is one of those places that should be on every diner's rotation. My wife and I come here about 3 times a year, and every time the food is excellent. This time was no different. We were on our way to Flemington to try out a local brewery and cap the night at MRR. Unfortunately the weather was snowy/icy and MRR was going to close early to allow staff to safely travel home. They called us to let us know our reservation was going to fall in the time slot they wanted to close, and gave us the opportunity to dine earlier. If course, we chose to dine earlier and skip the brewery. When we got to the door we were immediately brought upstairs. Our waitress was polite, despite clearly being very busy. We started with east coast oysters and the deviled eggs special, which had wasabi mixed into the yolks, topped with ahi tuna, and finished with a soy glaze. Incredible flavor, beautiful presentation. For dinner, my wife got scallops with a side of wild mushroom risotto, and I had a sous vide fillet with a bleu cheese crust and an add-on lobster tail. To say it was excellent isn't enough. Each bite after the first made it practically impossible to leave with leftovers. My steak and lobster tail were so perfectly prepared you'd have questioned if my plate even came out with food on it to begin with once I was done. My wife's scallops practically flaked apart under the weight of her fork. For dessert, we shared a mint chocolate chip bread pudding topped with vanilla ice cream. We destroyed the desert. My wife even commented that she hoped nobody saw us eating it because we probably looked like wolves. Eat at MRR, it's damn good food.
Wonderful experience. Mary was our server and explained everything well. There were a few specials that I order the cowboy steak from. The flat bread was tasty but not my thing as the 'bread' is more like a large cracker. Not bad, I just prefer softer. The cowboy steak was fantastic. Cooked medium rare as requested. As I cannot eat spinach the chef produced a great medley of crunchy zucchini slices, yellow and green that was great. Even though very busy we did not feel rushed on our 6pm reservation. To finish the coffee was really good. Quite a few desert choices. The bread pudding although presented as blueberry, turned out to be peach. Was good but when made as a single serving I think it looses the consistency that bread pudding made in a pan and then cut out in chunks, has. That is just a personal preference. The food here is fantastic. The service some of the best anywhere. They serve on the ground floor (maybe 8 steps up out side to porch that has one 4 top and two 2 tops) and inside tables and they serve upstairs where there is a semi private room that seats 8 to 10 and a dining room. The stairs are steep but we had a very good experience upstairs. Dining is well paced and a joy looking forward to our next visit. PS we paid on average $75 per person including tip.
Delicious food, wonderful wait staff, great atmosphere. We came for an engagement party and loved it. Drove an hour to bring our friends back tonight! Highly recommend! I had the NY Strip with truffle butter!
Genuinely surprised this gem was right around the corner. True to their mission the food was fresh, cooked accurately to your order. The portions were much bigger than you would expect from a place of this “status”? Which is a welcome change. Left stuffed, happy and looking for an excuse to return. I would have grabbed more pictures but I was busy stuffing my face, sorry! FYI, it’s BYOB. Bring a nice red with you
Set in a former house with an open Kitchen concept on the main floor and a menu that changes seasonally, always offering fresh, creative, delicious options, Matt's is our go-to destination whenever I'm visiting friends in NJ. Spend the day walking New Hope/Lambertville and Flemington then end it at Matt's!
From the welcome when we walked in to the knowledgeable personable server to the great tasting well presented food - - EXCELLENT. Well done!
Eliza listens well and we're working through anxiety issues with realistic strategies that I can actually use daily.
Simply one of the finest dining experiences in all of central New Jersey. I have been to this restaurant dozens of times, and I have never had a bad experience, whether it’s with large parties, or small gatherings. The menu is always fresh and seasonal, the portions are perfectly-sized and usually great for sharing, the specials are creative and plentiful, and the service is fantastic. It’s BYOB, which is perfect for most people looking to have an incredible meal, at a very fair price for the outstanding quality of food.
First time back to this restaurant in many years and it is as good now as I remember it being. The server was very professional and friendly and the food, excellent. Although I don’t eat oysters, they were enjoyed by those that do at the table. The mushroom soup was fantastic. nice mix a various types of mushrooms that resulted in a very good taste and texture. The halibut was perfectly cooked and finally, the cheesecake, something I probably haven’t ordered in years was delicious. Worth the tons of calories! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Amazing service by Dan and amazing food. 10/10 will definitely be back
I was part of a party of six, all first-timers at Matt’s. Everyone loved the food and the service was first rate. We will all be back!
Wow…..what a FANTASTIC lobster price fix menu & dinner. Terrific selection for each course &, Arguably the best seafood chowder I have ever had! Chowder has a Wonderful light but still creamy broth and loaded with seafood. I’ve never had a bad meal here in 20+ years but Matt keeps getting better!!! Cindy is an amazing person & server! Thank you!!
Last night we had the Bistro special at Matt's. The oysters and shrimp cocktail were superb! Pea soup and grilled romaine salad were spectacular. The California burgers were excellent; a nice taste of summer in the middle of January. We finished it off (although we were full) with an awesome brownie ala mode. The service was fantastic and Cindy was terrific. Highly recommend!
I love this place....hands-down one of my favorite restaurants. Everything on the menu is exceptional and it's not just your boring old "steak, potatoes, and salad" menu you find way too often in nice restaurants. They have elevated takes on those things but with an expansive variety of other interesting options. Everyone in the staff is great, but we've had Dan as our server for multiple visits over the past 6 months and he is awesome! My normal reviews cover more detail than this, including menu details, but I'm writing this unprepared since I just wanted to get the rating out there for a phenomenal independent restaurant.
What a wonderful experience! We were a group of four and everyone's meal was delicious. Service was impeccable and professional with a personal touch. Two of us had the grilled romaine salad, one house salad, and one mushroom soup. The grilled romaine had a smokey flavor but remained crisp and delicious. The house salad was as beautiful as it tasted. The mushroom soup was loaded with mushrooms and was raved about. Three of us ordered off the main menu and one had the swordfish special. The other three dishes were: twin lobster tails, short ribs and grilled tuna tartar. Everyone loves their meals. My tuna was cooked to perfection and everyone else enjoyed every last bite of their dinner. Portions were perfectly sized. I can't say enough about the overall experience! This is a must try B.Y.O.B in Flemington.
Amazing dinner. We had pork belly that was wonderful Crab cakes were tasty and all crab lobster was a bit too small but tasty. Blueberry amaretto marscipone was the best dessert I’ve had in a long time. Eat upstairs. Much better atmosphere !
We used to live in Flemington and loved coming here. We came back for a visit and made sure we had dinner here while intown. Service is always great and the food is so good we never can decide what to get! Highly recommend if your in the Flemington area, one of the best spots in town. Make a reservation!
Reminded me of a very very old Cape May style place… 8 ounce steak and cherry Coke short ribs were superb. Our waiter, missed his name, a guy about 40 short light hair, very good and friendly. I would visit again if in the area.
We loved it!! We were a party of 4 on Saturday night and absolutely loved the food and service. The deviled eggs and calamari - delicious.... the scallop risotto, crab stuffed fluke, short ribs and hanger steak were outstanding... desert was blueberry amaretto mascarpone - ridiculously good! Our server, Alex (female) was also outstanding and happily answered all our specific meal questions - loved her. We will ask for her on our future visits.
The food was good! My go to here is the grilled romaine Ceasar salad, it's spectacular! I also had the gnocchi with butter and herbs, appitizer portion. The gnocchi was just OK. Coming from an Italian family, the gnocchi was not up to my personal standards, but it was good. My date had the dry aged rib eye. It came with mashed potatoes and broccoli and an entire head of roasted garlic. The rib eye was also good, but full of grizzle and a big fat end. We wouldn't get it again. Bread came with the meal, which was nice, the bread was good. It was served with a side of a balsamic tepenad of some sort and butter. The table we were sat at, was 2 foot by 2 foot. The plates barely fit on the table. Change your dinner ware so they at least for on the small tables. It was cramped at that table. No flowers on the table, definitely a man owned business. Overall, I would only go back for the salad. Dan, our server, was polite, professional and friendly. Dessert was the best part of the meal. Peanut butter bomb with a caramelized saltine under the bomb. And a lemon, blueberry marscapone dessert. It's a well run restaurant, the staff was organized and not harried. They knew what they were doing and they ran the restaurant well!
Very nice place for dinner. The chef delivers a terrific menu, fresh and fancy. The steaks are grilled very well. The seafood is succulent and the duck is tasty. The ABC starter is a wonderful opener. No corkage fee is a pleasant surprise (for non-locals like me). The service is friendly, helpful and attentive. A wonderful dinner experience for travelers and locals alike.
Food was very good. We had the Scallops, Salmon, Cowboy Steak and Pork Chop. It was all good. Dan, our server was beyond excellent. Pork Chop is highly recommended. A little disappointed in the size of the cowboy steak as it was described as very big and it was pricey but it was about average size but still tasted great. Great gem in Flemington! We will return.
I was a bit disappointed with my experience here. The house is nicely decorated and the service was good. But trying to be very professional can sometimes be a bad thing. You don't feel the warmth you expect to be comfortable. The formula needs to be improved... On tbe food side, my appetizer was very salty and this is not good. My main course was better but very heavy. While it is a BYOB , the do offer wines from the local Unionville winery. I had what was supposed to be their best bottle and with no surprise to me it was not up to par o the price tag nor the taste someone expects from a Pinot Noir. It is still is a bit the restaurant fault to ensure people have the correct experience.
The bacon blue cheese sauce on the filet was very salty and I scraped it off, but my steak was cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes were good but not fluffy and a bit bland. I expected more from this restaurant. This was my first time here.
We've been here twice and had an amazing experience and a horrible experience. The first time we went with friends who recommended it. It was great! The service was excellent, the food was outstanding, and we had a blast. The second visit was quite different. We had been bragging about this place to another couple and brought them out. We were sat almost 15 minutes after our reservation time, not that big of a deal, but things were just weird from there. After that, there was an odd and awkward waiter to waitress handoff, a miscommunication on what the specials were for the evening leading to ordering something that wasn't what we thought it would be, and then hit with an incremental fee for using a credit card at the end. Overall, we felt bad for bringing the other couple there. Restaurants can say what they want about the fee being charged to their customers for using a credit card, but at the end of the day, it is a fee that has been in place for decades in therestaurant business that has now been passed to customers making it inconvenient and more expensive for them. This is an automatic 1 star deduction when I write reviews. Unfortunately, this would've been a 3 star review averaging a great experience with a poor experience, but deducting the extra makes it a two star experience.
