The Recess Room is praised for its innovative and flavorful food, strong drinks, and great service. Popular dishes include the bone marrow burger, brussel sprouts, and pig head. Some find it pricey and some dishes overly spicy or fatty.
Tip: Come for Happy Hour or Tiki Thursday for deals on food and drinks. Consider ordering the brussel sprouts.

Great place for food and drinks. They have a big whiskey selection if you are into whiskeys. If you come with a large group, you should order the pig head; it's crispy goodness. It's huge and we shared it with 8 people, among other dishes. The bone marrow mac and cheese was probably my favorite here.
The drinks & food were delicious! There was whiskey tasting so we got that free buzz boost. I would've gave a 4 star rating for our party receiving our dinners late--mine was last--BUT they comped some drinks and hooked it up for our birthday girl (woman!) with a dessert tray so that made it worth it.
Such good vibes here. The hostess and servers are great and positive. The drinks are bomb too! I really liked their mule and mai tai. I would probably pass on their lobster mac and chees. I also got their birria tacos, and that was pretty flavorful.
Food and drinks were very good. We were happy to dine here. The waitor was super attentive and nice. This has become one of our favorite places.
Roy was a marvelous host!! Our table was attended to with great attitude and service! Food and wine were scrumptious; even when we were stuffed we just wanted to keep eating! Thank you, Recess Room, keep up the great work!
Always a great time at The Recess Room. Great Happy hour deals, craft cocktails, and spirit tastings almost every week. Had fun with the special Halloween cocktails and decor. Order the brussell sprouts, you can thank me later :)
Came for Happy Hour and Tiki Thursday. The food and drinks were delicious. Had the chicken bites on the happy hour (and appetizer) menu and the chicken was delicious and juicy. Also tried the bone marrow burger and it was like a smashed onion burger but with a slice of bone (for some diy bone marrow digging). Also got a charcuterie board which was generally good. Our server was nice 👌 it is a bit pricey but is good for a nice evening out.
Service was great. Food was very flavorful (especially brussel spouts and fried chicken sandwich). The place was packed and the drinks were strong. #LocalGuides
I am forever a FAN! As a culinarian, I am someone who enjoys great food, quality and innovation. This place nailed it! The drink menu, is fantastic and the service is the perfect combination. We will be back for another fun night!
Great experience! I have randomly picked it out from nowhere cause it was sort of hard for you to make a reservation on the Father's day and this restaurant just passed by my eyes on the street and i chose it and kinda surprised cause of easily reserving for the day and end up, it had turned out a good one. Foods were great especially the Wayugu Burger and the service is out of expectations. The waitress was so nice...she definitely deserved a long applause!
A little pricey for what it is, but the food was fresh, hot and tasty. Only 5 entries to choose from but all 5 of those entrees were fantastic (my party ordered one of each) and original. Dessert was a cereal milk creme brulee and It was great. Once again, for sitting at a bar stool paying $100 for a drink and a steak didnt meet the ambiance of the price tag but staff was nice and food was excellent.
The food is undeniably well thought out, innovative and incredibly delicious!! The cocktails can't be beat in the OC, or even in Los Angeles for that matter.
We loved the Recess Room. Great drinks and delicious, rich food. If you get a chance to try it, try the Seance Wine with the bone marrow burger. Yum!

Really good customer service and the dishes all taste really good. The only exception is the seafood pasta. The others (pig head, clams, mussels, tomahawk, wagyu, Mac and cheese, veal, beet salad, etc.) Were right on target. Drink choices were excellent too. Highly recommended place. Bar setting type place with dinner ending at 10 pm on Friday night. If you are conscious of ethnicity, about 95% of the people who come here are asian which makes sense bc of the location.
My fiancé and I have been semi regulars here for the last year or so. We have always enjoyed coming to the recess room for a good cocktail and amazing food. The service is generally fairly slow and we know that going in and we are ok with it. Well, last night we took my parents for their first time. First off, I believe they got a new chef within the last couple months (sorry, chef, if I'm wrong!) and, WOW! They went through a bit of a rough patch for a moment but they are back and with a vengeance! Gambas al ajillo was amazing, ox tail mac and cheese - amazing, birria tacos - always delicious, lemongrass curry mussels - might have been the best mussels I've ever had, cereal milk creme brulee - yep, also delicious! Mom got the salmon, looked amazing but I didn't try it. Salmon came out pretty rare and my mom just ate around the center, not too worried about it until Thomas came up to check on us. Thomas immediately noticed the undercooked fish and offered to have the kitchen cook it a little more. Came back out a few minutes later with a beautiful, perfectly cooked salmon and made sure my mom was ok. Thomas went above and beyond to make sure we were enjoying our evening even though they were (like everyone else) understaffed for the amount of business they were doing. Cheers Thomas! The Recess Room is lucky to have you!
Every time I go there I like it more. The drinks are unique, the whiskey/bourbon/rye/scotch selection is huge and full of winners. The food is rich and flavorful. Love this place
A very different restaurant, with unique and delicious food options. The beef skewers were insane. Truffle fries were dynamite. That taco thing was killer. Ha! I look forward to going again.
Easily top 5 restaurant in Orange County. The recess room may look like just another restaurant from the outside, but once you step inside, you begin to see how it raises the bar. The service we received from Daniel was outstanding, with great recommendations and super friendly. The food is amazing with attention paid to every small detail that entertains all your tatste buds. The drinks are tasty with picturesque presentation.
The food was amazing, we had the sprouts, blue crab beignets, bone marrow Mac and cheese, the beet salad, the tomahawk steak, and the chicken sandwich. Let's start with the sprouts, they were amazing a light crunch with the heft of the sausage, slightly sweet and savoury at the same time. The crab beignetts we're sweet and delicious, the bone marrow Mac n cheese was amazing, I have never had Mac n cheese this creamy, add the earthy, beefy tones of the marrow and the sweetness of the shallots, this may be the best thing to come out of the kitchen for us. The tomahawk was really good, especially when considering the price. The chicken sandwich was pretty good, though I am not a fan of chicken so I am not a fair judge. We will be back.
Great cocktails and good food. The pig's head is really something, crisply fried, and big enough to feed four. I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart though. The cheeks are surprisingly fatty in the good way.
We ordered the Maryland blue crab beignet, double decker tacos (shrimp) and bone marrow burger. The beignets were filled with crab and the chipotle aioli was good. We split both our entrees. The shrimp was butterflies and perfectly cooked. The burger had a fantastic applewood bacon jam on top and came with a side of marrow. Burger was perfectly cooked. We split the tres leche cake. Everything tasted great. The servers were wonderful, polite, and very attentive. The portions were large. The shrimp to taco ratio was very generous. We will definitely go again. It is a little on the pricy side, but it is lots of well-cooked food. I think the portions and flavor are deserving of the price. I will say that if you go during peek hours it can get a bit loud. There is a large selection of beer and mixed drinks if you want alcohol.
Happy hour still exists! Delicious Brussel sprouts, bone marrow and a good list of concoction drinks! I have to praise the staff for enforcing social distancing and for making it so easy to interact and hold great conversations. It definitely made our outing much better !
Very interesting place. This was my first time I went with some friends and I can say we had a blast. The food was super good the beers amazing!! I will definitely be back in the future. The staff was on it and really cool.
One measure of quality of the service at a restaurant is the food temperature. Hot meals should be hot, cold beverages should be cold, it's that simple. Other quality element of the restaurant is how consistent the kitchen is to reproduce a dish over time. I would say Recess's quality puts them at the top restaurant in Orange County.
we had a girls night out to celebrate one of the ladies birthday. The food was great. Tapa style but some of the plates were big enough to share 4+ ppl. Fresh food and good options. we tried the fried pig's head... very crunchy... you have to over come the eww pig head's factor ..concept was good and I like how they like to test the waters in adventurous foods. We were able to bring in our own wine without corkage fee.. I don't know if they still offer that now.
My nail tech told me about this place and spoke very highly of it. WOW. I was blown away. A very unique experience, it's definitely not your average establishment. If your a foodie/cocktail enthusiast or just want something above and beyond your basic stuff, this place is A MUST!!!
Posted a four star review two years ago, but need to update. First, it is no longer trivia tuesday, but Trivia Wednesday. The craft cocktails are still excellent and the bar staff (Ava, Tommy, Max, Joe, and sometimes Danny) are happy to improvise. The menu is creative, delicious and features different dishes on a regular basis. Right now, if you don't come and try the duck scallion rolls, you are missing out. Also had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection.
The food is delicious and service is always excellent. I usually splurge on their amazing pork dishes, but this visit while I'm on a little summer time diet I wanted to try a lower calorie option. So I went with their salmon dish and that did not disappoint at all. Whenever I'm in Fountain Valley Recess Room is always my top choice to eat at.
Every bite of the food was delicious. I was there with my girlfriend for Valentine's day. We had a lot of food and cleaned the plates so good that we saved them from having to do dishes. Cold beer, good wine and great service. Perfect evening! We'll be back!
First of all, the look, even from the street is pretty awesome! I had never heard of it but it looked good as I passed it by and I had to come try it out! I was not disappointed. The interior is very pleasing. The bartender Thomas was on point! He knew his drinks and presented well with great service. Real mellow and very friendly. The vibe is low lit. Good small plates. They have a signature R imprint on the ice cube. That was sweet! I'm difficult to please and I was pleased. Come catch a drink. The Old Fashion was on deck. Try the Smoke and mirrors too! Good job Recess!
Great atmosphere. Good food! The bar is amazing. Daniel, one of the bartenders, is literally in love with his job and it shows! He has such a passion for people pleasing. We would literally give him a couple of ingredients that we liked and he would create an amazing drink from them. I didn’t order from the drink menu, I just trusted him to come up with “something good” and he nailed it 3 times in a row!!
This place is my favourite so far ! The food is yummy, the drink is amazing ! Both I and my fiance enjoy it a lot. We definitely will come back for the lunch school menu ! The servers are super friendly and the outdoor is pretty cute and warming! Just wondering why they let kids run around at 10:30 PM
Really amazing service. The staff are very nice and welcoming. They are always on top of their game. The food is beyond delicious. You might think it's pricy, until you see the portions. You get your dollars worth! Their bar menu is amazing as well. Great cocktails, beer, and ambience!
If you look at the menu, you'll already be drawn if you enjoy unique flavors. Come inside and you'll get two separate but both wonderful vibes. If you are with a group of friends, you'll probably be seated at a table. It's a noisy environment but it's not too loud that you can't have a good time; it's just enough to pick up the energy and run with it all night. If it's just you or with a friend, hit up the bar. Each of the bartenders has a choice drink of the night but don't let that stop you!! Throw out a flavor or a vibe you are trying the feel and they'll mix up the perfect drink to accommodate. If you are looking for some snacks, definitely try the Chicken Fried Mushroom or the Bone Marrow Mac & Cheese. If you are looking for an exciting place with delicious food, you've found it!
Been hearing so many great things about this place so I decided to order and try it out of myself. It was really good and pricing was great too. Our chicken even came with beer and even though I didn’t get to try it my family all loved it and said it was one of the best beers they ever tasted. They are still open for pick up. Def a must try place!
The food is all great and our waitress, Vangie was probably one of the most attentive and on top of it waitresses we've ever had. Everyone at the table agreed that she offered amazing customer service. The only negative thing I have to say about it, is that it is almost always packed. But when you offer great food with amazing service that tends to happen.
Forgot to take pictures. Our meals were fantastic. We had the tacos, calamari, and Mediterranean Chicken; All of them were great, legitimately. I will definitely be back. OH, almost forgot… The Cereal Milk Creme Brûlée was maybe the best creme brûlée I have ever had. 🔥
Went with 6 people and tried a wide variety of appetizers and entrees and they were all fabulous. Portions are on the small size but they are quite rich, so it works out. The food offerings are rarely conventional, so if you can only handle steak and potatoes, this might not be your place, but if your adventurous everything is fabulous.
Really enjoyed our first visit. Great cocktails, varied style beer selection, the food selections are unique, diverse and packed with a variety of wonderful flavors all priced just right. We'll be back soon.
Great food! How often does someone rave about the side salad? It was fresh and yummy. I had the pork belly bahn mi and my hubby had the bone marrow burger. We enjoyed our meal.
Was very impressed with this place. Our waiter was friendly and enthusiastic, and we ordered some fancy cocktails. We ordered brussel sprouts, beet salad, a charcuterie tray, and the pigs head. That in itself is a worth while experience for all food enthusiasts. The pig was delicious, crispy, served with Thai style roti and yummy sauces. We finished with a delicious lime Panna cottage with Thai basil and peanuts, smooth and Divine. Tres leches cake was out of this world. Yum yum yum.
Was wanting to try this place for a while. Was really impressed at their cocktail creations, fun flavors covering many profiles so everyone can find a drink they like. Hearty, generous portions even better with big groups to share. Had the birria tacos and oysters, delicious. Our waiter was excellent, it was very busy night and they were understaffed, but he didn't make excuses just remained professional. Aside from that, which is common in food service right now, the food and the drinks more than made up for it. (He even comped a pair of drinks due to the wait times. Definitely would like to come back, try that tomahawk steak 🤤
We only had drinks and appetizers at the bar but it was fantastic. We were waiting for our table at Kappa Ya across the parking lot and instead of sitting on the sidewalk and staring at parked cars we thought we would just come here and get a beer and I am glad we did. The bartender gave us the scoop about the place and the owners, local guys, friends from high school, stayed open during covid, etc. Had an order of calamari that could have just been standard fried calamari rings but it was probably the best that either of us have had. We know because we spend way too much eating dinners out. We also had an heirloom tomato dish with whipped goat cheese and cherries, which sounds weird but was one of those "don't talk to me, I'm eating this amazing culinary treasure" dishes. Also beers. Tons of beers on tap. I had the Pizza Port amber, was amazing. I don't know what he had, I forgot but he said it was good. Fun crowd, nice bar staff, great food. Will definitely be back for actual dinner. Can't wait.
Being a caveman for this long and finally we decided to try this outdoor dinning experience at the Recess Room. We can reserve ahead of time using yelp and we got the 5 pm reservations. We ordered the Thai curly fries, taco appetizer, duck gumbo and chicken pot pie with bone marrow for the main dish. The tacos are very tasty, the dipping sauce got a kick to the flavors but I love it!! The chicken pot pie with bone marrow is seriously our favorite!! The pot pie is very flaky and very well combined flavors dipping in the beef potato soup. However, the duck gumbo tasted just like chicken and lack of flavors. Overall the cocktails are very presentable and the flavors more on a sweet side.
A very nice gastropub. There is a good selection of beers and I was impressed with the whisky selection on hand The food is very good and eclectic in flavor. The Asian influences are notable in the staple of a pub dishes (pastas, tacos, wings and fried foods) I want to try the pigs head at my next visit

Service was great!!! Loved the corn dish.. unfortunately the wedge fries were too salty for me, but our fabulous waiter took it off our bill. Such a fun dining experience with Great cocktails!
This was an excellent over all experience. Food was very well prepared, just needed a few adjustments to put it at a five star rating. The servers were as good as they get, very attentive and accommodating. Great concept and a welcome addition to the OC culinary scene. We will be back!
Nice staff. Limited options for vegetarians. Options available were good though.. Portobello fries are must try. No energy drinks for mixed drinks and old fashioned is premade with Bourbon. However when we asked to have different Bourbon they were very accommodating!
Small plates that can be shared with a party of 4. The dishes are creative and tend to be on the sweet side flavored by sweet caramelized onions and balsamic vinegar. Service is friendly,. However we do have to wait for the dishes to come out, quite a bit of time between the entrees. We definitely like blue crab beignet, sprouts and bone marrow Mac and cheese (not so much marrow, but very rich). For the main course, the duck confit garlic noodles is good, the chicken pot pie has Indian flavor. The beer was good, and they have quite an impressive display of liquor. One thing for sure, if you want some good conversation, sit in the patio,. A lot quieter outside than inside.
Waiter was hard to find and I tried the brunch option for the first time. We got the chilaquiles breakfast eggs. Tomatillo sauce was on fire and largely portioned to the two easy eggs on top. With only being able to eat just the eggs, the bartender came to our rescue and was able to get us something similar in price to makeup for the fact we couldn't eat our meals. So then we decided to get a charcuterie board to share, more like a narrow plate of mixed meats, some cheese (FYI crumbled blue cheese is not the easiest to eat), and a slim fruit selection of purple grapes, a slice of a peach, a slice of grapefruit, three orange wedges and some slices of cheese with banana peppers. It didn't really merry together with the different flavors. So for a few cocktails, the mixed meat and cheese, and a slice of avocado toast be expected to spend over $70 on brunch at this location. I've heard great things about lunch and dinner at this location, so I hope my next visit meets to the expectation as this one was not it. But kudos to the bartender for the amazing White Linen cocktail, so amazingly good in this heat!
Had the pig's head and two beer for dinner. Was it good for GI tract? No. But the novelty in their dishes and the way it was executed was entertaining and savory. Although, I normally only judge a restaurant by food, Recess Room's service and decor had attention to detail that other similar restaurants did not..
My Mary Poppins cocktail was the perfect girly drink. The food was very good and reminds me of Asian Fusion. They also have a big selection of whiskey of you're into that. Our bartender, Ashley, was super friendly and made our night a great one! Had to knock down a star because the second time we came here, we had a reservation at 8:15 but we weren't seated until 9pm! On top of that, service was extremely slow. I'm a little disappointed since the food and drink really is good.
If you're coming for a low-key environment with great food - this is the place. Young crowd, high energy, and good drinks/food. Fried pig head is worth trying (it's very fried), and everything else was delicious! The bar gets backed up, but the servers and management are great! Drinks are well presented, and everything from Ceasar salad to shrimp is really well done. The metal seats are uncomfortable, and the tables for two are small, but that's my worst complaint. I'll be back for sure!
Not as tasty as the photos depict. I went with a few friends and we ordered a significant number of meals from the menu, including the boar head. Of all the items we are, the Mac and cheese was good and the bacon burger. There was one salad that was good, but all of the other dishes were not super tasty. I'm unlikely to return, but it was worth trying.
The food is just okay. The Sprouts dish was the best among all the dishes that we ordered. The beef tartare was way too spicy that you couldn't taste any beef flavor. The Crab Beignet was good. The Cauliflower dish was also on the spicy side. The kids didn't enjoy the place. It's unlikely that I will return.
After seeing so much pictures posted about this place I was very curious. I came here for my birthday and now wish I didn't. The food was average, but the price is quite high. The only dish I enjoy was their porto bello fries which were nice and and fluffy. The halibut was good, and done right. Everything else was average like the service. Throughout the whole dinner, they checked up on us once. The vibe is similar to mesa, but with an older crowd. One of the worst dish of the night was the crab beignet, it was too creamy and you get sick of it before you are full. It's a gastropub, but does not serve alcohol, yet the price of their drinks were similar to drinks that actually have real alcohol in it.
The food was for the most part really good. The fried chicken skins weren't what I expected but were very good in what they actually did with it. The charcuterie plate was delicious. I wish it had more accompaniments though. The bone marrow macaroni and cheese was sooo weak though. The only part of that dish that had any flavor was the ox tail marmalade. It lacked lots of things. Service was the downfall. Our server who started off strong giving us a full rundown of the menu and introducing us to the concept was great to start. As the meal went on we saw less and less of him until I was flagging him down because I saw him leaning against a wall chatting with the table next to us for around 10 minutes while my girlfriend and I had empty water glasses, dirty plates from our last two dishes and empty wine and cocktail glasses. Even after he was flagged down it still took him another 5 minutes to get to our table because he needed to finish his conversation. It was a pretty busy night and everyone seemed to be in a hurry to help their tables and help him (as the other server and busses got us waters), so I am sure the service is normally better. We decided to skip entrees and got a dessert menu instead and didn't see our server again for sometime. By that time we decided we would catch a lyft to yogurtland and drink at home. Will definitely come back as the drinks creative and the food was mostly good and there are still things we would like to try next time.

Food was good, but out of four people my dish was 10 minutes late. Everyone else was almost done... Waitress said sorry for small wait. Um no, that was a major wait. Comped one of the desserts. Drinks were tasty, although I asked for a straight up gin martini with muddled cucumber and they gave me some sweet awful cucumber drink.
It was pretty good but service could have been better. I asked for a marrow burger with no bacon (because I'm allergic to applewood) and I received with the bacon. I was also not informed that bacon was ground into the meat. One wrong drink( not a big deal). I guess they don't have shades for the windows. I used a menu to block the sun for the first 30 mins. When I sat down in my chair I found out my chair was broken and fell. I'm only 175lbs so I'm not obese. Overall the food was good. Just wish the experience was a little better
Food was okay. We ordered some appetizers and the chicken wings were dry, sprouts we're greasy, the calamari was good. Drinks are expensive. Nice atmosphere for hanging out with friends for drinks.
The host was very personable and engaging. Great ambiance. Multiple servers came by and refilled my water which I thought was a great touch. Lower rating was for several reasons. I ordered two different drinks and was disappointed in both of them. I asked for a sweet drink. The first one I didnt care for the flavor/combination of ingredients. The second one I was told would absolutely be sweet. It tasted just like a lot of alcohol as opposed to a pear flavored beverage. They were nice enough to take them both off of my bill although I asked if the sec5vond one coukd be fixed. I had a chicken sandwich and I really liked the toppings that they put on it. My only issue was there was sections of my chicken sandwich that were very burnt. Also, I had mixed feelings about the demeanor of the server. He seemed to be understanding but there was an under current. Especially as I said I "may" want my bill split when I first came in. He brought me the bill split into two without asking. When I inquired his response was well that's what you said. At that point I was just so done, I just paid the bill and left.
Good but a bit overrated and over priced. We liked the food and drinks, for the most part, as well as the decor/ambiance but felt the prices and other reviews may overstate the value. -2 cocktails ($14 a pop): the drinks were good, but not that strong and not particularly large. We felt they were just overpriced for the location. $14 are LA or Newport Beach prices. This is Fountain Valley. You just shouldn't be charging that much. -Tartare (~$15?): overall the dish tasted good, but by mixing in so many other ingredients that had strong flavors (ie. spicy peppers, etc), you take away from the delicacy of a tartare. You could barely taste the beef in the dish. Also, the egg was slightly overcooked as the yolk did not run when cut open. Probably a degree or two too high in the sous vide. But don't get me wrong, this dish still taste great, just not what I consider appropriate for a tartare. -Blue crab beignets (~$15?): probably the best dish of the evening. Nice, delicate dough and a great sauce to go with it. -Sous vide octopus (~$15): good quantity of octopus but it turned out a bit tough. Octopus is hard to get soft, and I've only had it braised when it came out that way. But we had never tried it cooked in a sous vide, so we wanted to try it. The bacon it came with had good flavor. Overall, underwhelming. -Veal dumplings (~$15): this dish was large and well done. Flavor of the meat was good, and the doughy skins were very satisfying. -Horchata Tres Leches ($8): not particularly spectacular but by no means bad. It kind of just tasted like a better cake with whipped cream on it. The bottom layer was not soaked and the dulce de leche was barely evident. Staff: Hostess was not as friendly as I would have preferred, but not rude. Our actual waiter was attentive and kept our water glasses filled. One woman who was running dishes from the kitchen to tables was less than satisfactory. She seemed frazzled and a little rough with the dishes when bringing them out.
The place is nice and the staff were accommodating. The menu is different and there are some tasty dishes on there. We had several appetizers while we were there but the portion to cost ratio was waaay off. Appetizers were overpriced and the entrees that I saw didn't come with sides. I ordered the salmon and it had some crispy onions on top and it sat on some sauteed onions with chick peas and sauce and it was $21. The filet was a good size though. We also ordered the half pig head and it was very fatty and a required a little too much effort to cut through the fried skin and fat to get to the meat. Overall it is a nice atmosphere but I wasn't very impressed. I might go back to give them another chance and maybe order something different but not any time soon.
This place has great drinks and the atmosphere is easy going mixed with laughs and cheers. The food is presented well and appetizing but not expected when it came to the taste. We came with a large group and some of our orders were forgotten so that explains the average rating. If you want to drink this is a great place to enjoy a drink and funny company.
The food was very good but for the price I was expecting a lot more. This place is a bar first and restaurant second. So it is very popular with the drinking crowd, but I don't drink so it is not really my kind of place. I will say it server was excellent, among the best I have ever had. He was on top of it before we even realized we needed a refill he had refilled them. Great service.
The food and drinks were good but really overpriced. 2 slices of sourdough and fancy butter for $7? And the service was sooooo slow. We didn't get our drinks for half an hour and I didn't get my drink at all. I ordered a beer. That's it. I had to reorder. It was almost an hour before I had a drink to go with my 2 slices of bread. The decor was great, tge parking easy, but I wouldn't recommend this place.
Nice atmosphere and surroundings in the restaurant. Menu is very unique in their offerings but the food wasn't anything to write home about. They SERIOUSLY need to hire more staff, as we ate here on a Sunday for this president's day weekend and I only saw maybe 3 servers for a full restaurant. Everything took excessively long, including getting my check which took another 15 minutes after we decided to forego dessert due to the expected long wait.
Seems like a good place for drinks but most of the food was only a step above bar food. Service was also odd with dishes for our group coming out very spaced out in time. I recommend sticking with drinks here and maybe a few shared plates then going to a better restaurant for a real meal.
The food was decent. We had bought about 7 plates to share and it was tasty, but not nearly worth the price they're charging. I can see the appeal of the restaurant and if you're down for a snack and a drink, it's a fun place to eat, just expect to eat multiple plates to get full.
3 stars, as to why? service ! Slow slow service, mix up on orders etc. As for drinks and food I'd have to say 4-5 star.. ambience is great, food had great taste, drinks were amazing, we were told there was a wedding party having a dinner as excuse but I'm sure a wedding party dinner was reserved and the manager should have had a better grip on servers for the night, once service is upscaled, I'd definitely give this place a 5 star !!
The cocktails are always good, same with service, but the menu is hit or miss. I've enjoyed the flat iron steak, salmon, brussel sprouts and cauliflower. The shrimp and empenadas not so much. Nice decor and nice outdoor seating area.
Very hit or miss with service if you sit at the bar -- the drinks are fantastic and hand crafted , the downside is it goes one of 2 ways - you get a tender that is completely aware and checks back with you repeatedly, or you get a tender who is just completely distracted and/or aloof as hell, and you get ignored or overlooked repeatedly throughout your meal or bar experience. The food is pretty good and they rotate some things in/out quarterly (at least that's my take) , however it is also subject to whoever happens to be in the kitchen that night along with the service/servers. They keep it easy-going with a nice variety of Asian/Fusion offerings, and not "too many" like you might see at other restaurants Atmosphere is usually kind of loud with typical bar white noise , but lower level lighting in the evenings keeps it feeling mellow. If you get lucky with bartender & food-service, you should have a pleasant evening with a great meal and wine great drinks. ✌️
We ordered the pig head (their specialty), bone marrow mac n cheese, Thai tots, calamares and brussel sprouts. I found their food too fatty and greasy.. it gave me bad indigestion. The serving size of the calamares was also smaller than the other food we got for some reason. They also offer craft beer but it was just okay.. I went with the Hayabusa and it seemed like it was watered down. My friends didn't like their cocktails that much either. Too bad because the restaurant had such good ambiance and their staff were very nice. I'd go somewhere else next time.

Service for brunch was really, really bad. The food came out in 2's, and there were 6 of us. The last two to get their food got it about 35 minutes after the first batch was delivered. It was fine tasting, but nothing spectacular. The steak and eggs comes with one egg, so there's that... It probably shouldn't be plural.
I normally don’t write reviews, but our experience at this place left quite a bad impression on me and my friends, even a week later. Came here while visiting with some friends and the food and drinks were not bad but our server was extremely rude. One friend had asked our server about a drink she had seen online and asked if she knew which one it was, to which our server responded in a very short tone “I have no idea.” Which is fair and we didn’t think much of this interaction. However, after our bill had been paid and our server had been tipped, we sat around a little longer to chat while my friends made sure they were okay to drive home. Our server came by to clean up some plates and we had asked if we could get more water. Our server looked at us and responded with “Um, we’re going to close soon.” It was definitely 15 minutes before closing, and I can understand if maybe she had a bad day but we all found it rude of her to deny a simple request, especially when my friends and I had been drinking and other customers were all still sitting inside too. My friend and I have been servers/in the service industry before and were really put off by her attitude. Would not be recommending this place to any friends or family.
The Recess Room is a weird combination of every single hipster trend; irrelevant black and white photos, servers wearing leather aprons and overpriced drinks. It’s bizarre. The bar has 25 taps, but only 4 were connected, of which 3 were sours (and not good). No champagne to make spritz and the mule was nothing but lime juice in a high ball. So bizarre. Bar looked cool, though.
3 years ago we lived this place... this time... not so much My good was OK. But my wife's food, both the appetizer and the main dish came AFTER I got both my appetizer AND the main entree...and hers was actually cold My food was pretty tasty, but it literary took them over 45 mins to bring it. Good food, horrible service. Not coming back
What you're paying for is pretty much just the decor looks like a fancy-schmancy place kind of old timey. The drinks are expensive and now it's a Libations place and the food is expensive as well not that good either it's very fatty or just more about you know presentation and not about quality I got that roast Pig very dry. I got the corn the elotes and it was a lot of work kind of messy because it was on the cob still but they put on a nice platter to say the least but the drink selection is pretty good. It's nice that they have a couple of TVs in there they can watch some sports games. It's just a very hipster place for a lot of young people to go to.
What a disappointment! The restaurant itself is really cool looking and they have a great selection of alcohol but thats pretty much the best part of the place! Our server was very nice and accommodating at first but then she seemed to become overwhelmed and we felt like a nuisance just for asking for basic stuff. We kept trying to flag her down and she ignored us everytime! I finished my meal before my bf even got his sweetener or meal (which i ended up having to go to the bar to get myself) and Michael's pasta tasted more like Chef Boyardee than pasta from a so called scratch kitchen! Which wouldn't be so bad except it cost us $80 and took about 50 minutes for his meal to come out! They tried getting fancy with their food but the combinations didn't seem to work. And to top it all off i am now feeling actually nauseous Honestly the highlight of our meal was the CUCUMBER in our WATER Hahah If you came just for drinking and sat at the bar then you'd probably have a blast because the bartenders seemed awesome! Again i want to reiterate the restaurant itself is quite charming. But the food was mediocre...at best.
Bad service!!!! Lack of customer service.. They need to improve in their ticket time for entrée. It was a really bad experience to come to this restaurant. Honestly i think I would never recommend this place if you want to impress your love one on a special day or anniversary. .. We waited approximately almost 2 hours for our entrée. I ask our waitress to cancel my order. Her reply was.. that it was about to come out "right now"....30mins later by wife brother law and I got our entrée...pretty much we started to get our food in pieces... .. Kitchen needs improvement in all the aspects of managing time or server needs to be retrain in how to summit a three course meal. Think about it and read most of the reviews ...it sound like it's more like a bar.
The food was barely warm and over priced. Not at all worth the money. It literally felt like they stuck the food in the microwave and then brought it out. The service was okay. There was a large party there so we didn't get enough attention. Definitely never going back.
Came with a party of 18 and had the private room reserved because it was a friend's birthday. They told us that they gave their private room to another party. They spent 20 minutes setting up a long string of tables in the main room rather than giving us the room that we reserved. They took 30+ minutes to take our order. They had missed my drink order, which I had waited for 15 minutes after the rest of my table got their drinks. They took an hour and a half to make most of the food but missed 3 of our meals. We thought they were running behind, but turns out the waiter never put the order in for those 3 meals (but did everyone else's?). Multiple orders were not done to correctly(being given rare burgers versus medium or medium-rare). When we asked for the missing dinners, they let us know that one of them was actually out of stock but put the other 2 in(even though we placed it an hour ago). After 15-20 minutes, only one of the 2 came out... Turns out they didn't even make one of them when we asked about it a 3rd time. They provided no real compensation for the room being taken and the missed meals besides some free dessert. They barely apologized and said that there was no manager to approve anything more. Here's the kicker though, when we got the check, they placed 2 orders of the out of stock dinner even though we never got a single one! Like what in the world would make you put meals into a receipt after saying that you were out of stock(it was the salmon entree fyi). The waiter kept saying that he was the only waiter that day and he did look like a wreck to be honest. He and the presumably assistant manager constantly avoided taking care of us and we had to flash them down for various things like 4 missing table settings(they brought over 1 after I asked for 4 explicitly), missing condiments(Only 1 of 3 burgers had ketchup), and missing drinks and meals. Honestly I'm not sure if they didn't bother cause they were getting gratuity cause of the size of our party, because I think they knew that we wouldn't have tipped very much based on such a poor excuse for dinner and a restaurant. It was a disappointment all across the board, and I would never recommend this place to anyone.
The food is good, at least what we got. The problem is my wife was served her dinner Salad, very small, and was done with me still waiting for my dinner to come. After waiting 45 minutes for it, I just canceled my order and went someplace else so I could have dinner. We even had to stop a different waiter to ask about my dinner. When he came back he said the kitchen was still working on it. This was 45 minutes after ordering it. My wife gets full on a glass of water and was so hungry after having half an appetizer and her $18 dinner salad that she eat with me at the place we went to after not being served here. The manager did offer me a desert, even though I had not gotten a dinner, or $6 off the bill for my inconvenience of waited over 45 minutes and getting nothing. We will not be back. Update: 4 days after posting this review I got a generic reply from the owner, Viet, that thanked me for my review, but no apology or anything about fixing the problem. This shows the total lack of customer service comes from the top.
We made reservations for out 21st weeding anniversary. The service was absolutely horrible! I haven't ever experienced anything like it before. We ordered appetizers and it never came. We ordered entres and my husband got his food and it took 40 minutes to get my hamburger. We were set next to a group that was extremely aggressive and disrespectful. The food was decent. However, if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the company and the food do not go to this place. Other options you might enjoy is Ruth Chris or even the Cheesecake Factory. Lol!
