This is a lovely old pub that has finally been taken over by people endeavouring to utilize its true potential. It has been beautifully redecorated inside, with tasteful decor and even the loos are now gorgeous! They’ve put a new bar and serving area in the back garden, revived the garden itself and put soft tasteful lights throughout. We now look from our home to see a thing of beauty and tempting draw for the occasional meal out. Barry is an outstanding chef that delivers a variety of tasty dishes and even the bar snacks (meals for me) are wonderful. If you’re lucky you may pop in on a day when he’s been baking, which is always a treat.
Wow. What an incredible meal from start to finish! Very difficult to park, it's a shame because I imagine it's one of the larger reasons people may struggle to travel here to try. Parking sharing with the nearby green king would do wonders! The waitresses were incredibly kind and jolly throughout service - very helpful when asked questions. The starter, main and dessert's value for money was off the charts. For £30, a very filling main and a Michelin star taste is incomparable. I've paid 20 quid for a dry and tasteless burger at Greene King pubs. I can't stress enough: you MUST try this place at least once. Set aside about 70 quid per person for 3 courses and a drink and you won't regret it!
Make sure you look for VERA, Green Man. Everything you want from a British Country Pub serving food. Exceptionally warm friendly accommodating staff. I am pleased that this beautiful pub has re opened as previously wanted to come here on recommendations. We had booked the wrong pub, but the wonderful cheery staff made us so welcome. The Cauliflower and side of bhaji Soup was delicious creamy and very tasty. The Sunday roast cooked perfectly we had the sirloin of beef. Service was great, vibrant atmosphere. Dog friendly although we had left ours at home, I wish I had room for the desert but needed a lie down after the fill. Thank you, we look forward for returning on our travels.
Had a lovely lunch here on a Sunday, and enjoyed the flexibility in menus available - The BBQ menu for summer is fantastic! Tender beef skewers were a hit. Sunday roasts also brilliant. I went for the cod which was light and flavourful. Service is always friendly and helpful, Jesse looked after us fabulously!
A Cosy Pub with Character, Great Food, and a Lovely Setting – The Green Man, Grantchester The Green Man in Grantchester is a true countryside gem — full of character, charm, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. Whether you’re stopping off during a riverside walk from Cambridge or visiting the village itself, this pub is an absolute must. We visited for lunch and were thoroughly impressed. The menu is thoughtfully put together, featuring well-executed pub classics alongside seasonal specials. The food was fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. From perfectly cooked fish and chips to hearty pies and crisp, fresh salads, there’s something for everyone — and it’s clear the kitchen team takes real pride in what they serve. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout, making us feel genuinely looked after without being overbearing. Inside, the pub is full of character with its beamed ceilings, log fire, and cosy nooks — perfect for a relaxed pint or a leisurely meal. There’s also a lovely outdoor seating area for sunny days, right in the heart of the village. With its unbeatable location, great food, and warm hospitality, The Green Man offers the perfect blend of traditional charm and quality dining. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s well worth a visit.
We loved our first visit to the Green Man for lunch today. Shown to a great table even though we had not booked. Great to see a good choice of zero alcohol beers for those of us who drive 👏 Menu choices were a hit: my gin cured salmon starter was clean and fresh, and my rump steak 🥩 tasty with the chimicurui sauce. The thick cut fries were a big hit with everyone. I just had room for dessert. Recommend the winter crumble if you like desserts with a lot of seasonal fruit. It wasn't too sweet or heavy. Thank you to the amazing Pedro and team for looking after us like royalty 😊 Highly recommended and we are already planning a return visit despite living 3 counties away 😏
Lovely dog friendly pub. Staff gave us a warm welcome. Chips were served quickly and piping hot, with mayo and Ketchup before we even asked. Spaced out tables with comfy range of seats. Also covered outside seating with heaters is a big positive. Toilets were clean. Parking is a challenge so bear that in mind.
What good fortune to have The Green Man as my first pub experience. Wow, I think this was good fortune, as the location was convenient to our hike from Cambridge, the service was truly excellent and the food was plentiful and well done. I’ll hold this experience as the lens thru which all others will be enjoyed. Must go!
We had an absolutely fabulous late Saturday lunch, in the side dining room. It was quiet and we could hear everyone speaking really clearly, and the music was fantastic! Bibi was a great waitress and handled our shenanigans with the menu extremely well. The food was absolutely delicious- the chicken pie and the venison ragu in particular. And the raspberry and gin cheesecake! Thank you, will come again. Soon.
Although it was huge portion sizes the food and drink was nice. The daily specials were great and definitely worth a try. A great English pub overall.
Very welcoming reception, lovely staff, great service, Fantastic food. I had the cauliflower bites in Korean sauce, just amazing and the Sunday roast was very good too. Definitely returning
Walked from Cambridge and stumbled across the Green Man. It’s a quaint, comfortable, and classic pub. The food was incredible - I got the fish and chips. Loved the friendly dogs, fireplace, and the staff.
Really lovely meals that are well presented and full of flavour. Pedro & team are super attentive and very friendly. Lovely spot in the window for 5. Thank you
Iona served us and we had such a lovely Sunday lunch today. The pub is cosy and attractive, and the food was fantastic. We are new to the area and couldn’t decided which pub to come to for lunch today, especially as we had friends staying. We chose the Green Man based on reviews and it did not disappoint! Big portions, great flavour and as a group we had chicken, beef and pork. Beef was the favourite, but all were great. We shall be back soon!
Visited The Green Man for a Sunday lunch (after originally booking and subsequently cancelling another nearby place elsewhere) because we were seduced by the cosy atmosphere of this place! I’m so glad we did! Firstly we were welcomed very warmly by all the staff - especially our little dog who they made a lovely fuss of! Our server, Autumn, was lovely but honestly everyone was very attentive. The Sunday roast was exceptional! One of the best we’ve had in a long time. Our plates were clean. The portion was so substantial I wish I’d have had enough room for dessert but perhaps next time, as we shall definitely be back.
What a marvellous Christmas Dinner my team and I had. We were a large group of 32 people, and the service and food were just spectacular. It was a lovely night for our group, and everyone enjoyed their three-course meal. Thanks, Pedro, Jules and the team for our fantastic experience! I highly recommend.
Our waitress, Anna, was wonderful. She was very friendly and attentive. Our drinks and food arrived promptly, and everything we ate was delicious. Would highly recommend for a Sunday roast.
We were looking on line for somewhere to have lunch for the next day as we were coming to see my husbands sister .So pleased that we chose this place .Such a cosy atmosphere on entering and a very warm welcome. The food was superb.2 of us had the pork cutlet ,perfectly cooked and tasted so good. The creamed potatoes and fresh veg. was perfectly cooked. The 3rd person of our party had the cottage pie which also was perfectly cooked and served with fresh veg. The service was very good.It was a wonderful experience and will certainly return.I would recommend this place 100%.
Went here for Christmas Day lunch for the first time. The food was great, very timely and Anna was superb serving us! Always approachable and super friendly and quick! Best Christmas Day lunch we’ve had so far, thank you!
So don’t want to write this as the more fabulous reviews the more People will go and tables will not be possible to get for locals. However full credit where credit is due . This place has changed for the positive after Vera part of the resturant left without a doubt it’s back to a proper local village pub excellent food and fabulous service by very well trained young staff . The front of house chap an asset to this establishment really friendly and helpful It’s brilliant to have such an outstanding public house on our door step again. Well done guys you should be very proud .
First time dining here, and we weren't disappointed. The staff were very helpful and quick to serve us. I had the chicken roast, my friends had the pork belly roast and the burger. The roast was amazing! Probably the best I've ever had! The atmosphere was lovely too. The only downside is that the pub doesn't have a carpark, so at busy times like Sunday lunchtime, it can be difficult to find parking. This wouldn't stop me from returning. Well worth a visit
When I was visiting family from the US, we went here and the food was phenomenal. It is not your average pub food. On the day we went, the crew and cast from Grantchester were having a wrap up party, because they had just completed their final shoot of the final season. Because of that we did not get to eat out back in the garden, but it looked enchanting. The prices were reasonable for how exceptional the food was. We just had starters and drinks. We had the green soup, Yuzu Salmon Salad, Roasted Squash, Beet Root Salad, Burratini, Hummus, wine, and beer. It was the best food I had eaten in Cambridge thus far. The wait person was funny and charming and knowledgable about the food. They were super dog-friendly as well. They made a big deal about my two little rescue dogs. You could even order treats for the dogs. I am dying to go back. I went back again and they have a different menu. I never tried fish and chips and mashed peas and mint and I am glad that I tried it here first--very gourmet version and large portions. I had the sherbet for dessert and it was soooo fresh and fruity.
I would have posted more pictures of the food but it was eaten too quickly! A lovely walk (or cycle) along the river from Cambridge will bring you to Grantchester, and this delightful pub - the interior is like stepping back in time, from the wood-burning fireplace to the wooden beams and the solid, sturdy furniture. The staff are friendly and give good advice on food and drinks to choose; there's a wide menu featuring many unusual ingredients and with suitable options for vegetarians or vegans that sound just as appealing as the meat dishes. I had lamb and feta with fries; it was divine, especially with a pint of cider alongside! Prices aren't bad for the South of England, especially considering the quality of food on offer - a solid choice all around!
Fabulous find in the middle of nowhere 😍 ( visited Cambridge from Portsmouth). Popped in for an early Valentine's supper with hubby & 2 young children and was very pleasantly surprised by location, atmosphere, food, and service. The building itself is full of history ( will be returning in summer as there was a beautiful garden, and can only imagine sipping a glass of rose/local cider in the sunshine 😊) and very quiet neighbourhood. The welcome and the hospitality throughout our meal was truly amazing- Pedro and his team are so into their "zone " to provide an excellence to their guests. The food: charcuterie to start, superb cote de bouffe for main to share with all the trimmings: butters, sauces and a must try creamed spinach 😋 kids really enjoyed their fish & chips too. Thank you and see you very soon 😉
New refurbished. We stopped by “mistake” and we been soooo surprised by everything! Staff - location - furniture - outdoor - food - everything!!! Not too many choices of food but is worthy to go! Recommend
Good pub with a nice atmosphere. The drinks are well made and there’s a good variety, and the food is tasty without being over the top. Friendly service and a comfortable place to relax. Worth stopping by if you’re in the area
The Green Man in Grantchester is a really lovely old pub, but over the last few years it fell into disuse and almost ruin. Happily it has now been acquired and refurbished, and is offering mid to high end food. I went there last evening in a group of six, and to a man/woman we all really enjoyed our food. The wine and beer was great too. The ambience is excellent, and would certainly do for a special occasion - birthday, anniversary etc. It's a big cut above 'pub grub', but at £55 per head, all-in, which it was for us last night, I can report that it's very good value indeed.
We really enjoyed our visit and were very well looked after by Anna. Great food as usual. Thank you!
Lovely pub and restaurant, I only dropped by for a coffee but saw a very pleasant restaurant at the rear. Id love to try some food if I ever come by again
We really enjoyed our lunch. Service (by Anna) was perfect. The atmosphere is amazing. Thank you. We will be back… next time with our dog. Xx
Just eaten an absolutely fantastic lunch. Faultless service, warm welcome, loved every second of it. I thoroughly recommend and will be back.
Highly recommend! The roast dinner (we went for the pork belly) was amazing, as soon as we walked in we were greeted by the super friendly staff, special shout out to Jesse who looked after us so well, he recommend some great ales and was super helpful. Will definitely come here again when visiting Cambridge!
We had such a lovely meal. It was a Monday night but was still very busy! Our waitress Elizabeth was very friendly and attentive.
The platter to share I thought was a little frugal, my wife and I were starving on the drive back to Norfolk. But our son had the fish and chips which looked excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff, also very dog friendly.
Popped in with friends, for a drink and ended up having a sausage roll and it was hands down the best sausage roll I’ve ever had! It was absolute perfect! Will definitely be back for another!
Great Sunday roast! Lovely squash soup and veg roast. Cheesecake was a great dessert. Anna looked after us and she was wonderful. I am GF and DF and I had many many options
Went there for Christmas lunch, food was fabulous, service excellent all of the staff were so lovely and helpful, very welcoming. A perfect time will definitely be returning
I had a fantastic festive visit to the Green Man. The food, service and atmosphere were second to none- couldn’t fault it! We were served by lovely Elizabeth.
The server Anna was super attentive and friendly! The food was amazing and top level pub food too with great Christmas decorations setting a great vibe! 10/10 would recommend!
A lovely Sunday lunch in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Beautiful food and wonderful service thank you Anna
Management and staff very nice overall, we just had to keep asking tap water because the bottles were very small and there was 5 of us. Lovely meal altogether, but some of the things like the venison ragu and the linguine pasta were lacking some flavour, or salt at the very least. Super dog friendly (not just dog tolerated, if you know you know) and incredible amount of choices for both gluten free and vegan, which we had a need for in our group. Amazing atmosphere.
The Green Man is a Grantchester institution and it was a sad day when the place closed several years ago. It is great to see the place given a new lease of life, although it's a bit less spit n sawdust than it was and more gastro than pub. Notwithstanding this, it's still nice to see an old run down pub brought back to life and ...it gives a local competition a run for their money as well. Service needs a bit of work with several quite young and inexperienced staff all looking a little blankly at one another whenever an order was placed. But expect this will improve over time!
Lovely Little Pub with Charm and Good Food. This place is full of charm as most of the Pubs in small villages in Europe seem to be. The food here was good and plenty, although the selection was rather small. The brew was just as good and there was plenty of selection for drinks. The ceilings are low so if you're tall mind your head as you walk through the location. The service was good, polite, and respectful and gave good suggestions on what to try and what was not a must. A good place to stop for lunch or dinner.
We were greeted warmly and could only sit outside, as it was a sunny September day, however the garden lacked planting etc and just felt like a row of picnic bench tables which we never find comfy for eating upon. We had barbecue skewers and they were tasty. As was the other accompaniments we ordered however we did find the quantity of the ingredients sparse for the price we paid e.g. greek salad, and as you are charged separately for any item to go with the skewers and it's not a meal price, we felt our one course lunch and drinks aka £90 were not good value for money for a lunch out. However we enjoyed meeting the pleasant young staff who were busy waiting tables
It was okay.... Great friendly service but a little let down by the food. Fantastic veg and yorkie puds had all the promise for a great Sunday roast. Sadly let down however by the "turkey", that's what it was on the menu. Pleasantly told that it was wrapped in bacon so it piqued my interest to see a different take rather than the usual slices boating in a sea of gravy. But it turned out to be a roll of very well cooked bacon filled with soggy stuffing and a small piece of bland white meat, everso slightly disappointing. Nice to try a different take but it just didn't work for me as very small and absolutely no flavour. The pork belly looked good but was apparently very fatty and again, lacked flavour. The parsnips and carrots however, were superbly cooked.... All in all, a pleasant roast with a decent ale on tap but I doubt I'll be going back.
Thete were 4 ladies in our group party. We ordered our drinks they took 30 mins to arrive. And to note a large glass of sauvignon Blanc was £16 very steep compared to other places. We asked for extra ice for our drinks, that didn't come so we had to ask again. Starters arrived and the extra sourdough we asked for didn't arrive so we asked for that. That arrived just as we were finishing our starters. Main courses arrived we asked for the ham to come with no eggs it arrived with eggs. We had to ask for cutlery. The fish & chips were nice although a bit greasy for my liking. Very disappointed considering it was for a birthday. Service charge was 12.5 % . We did not pay this as the service was terrible and we feel 12.5 % is far to high. The outdoor area was nice.
We went to the green man yesterday and we're very disappointed in it.we should have been told there was a barrel rolling day.they ran out of ale.my husband and son paid £33 for a rib eyed stake which was grizzly. Then they have the cheek to charge £28 service charge.we will not be recommending it.carol geal
