The food here was delicious! All four of us enjoyed our selections; I wish we could have returned for another visit, but our time in England was limited. The young lady behind the bar was very nice and patient with us first timers to a pub.

Awesome food and a great beer garden. They have a selection of their own ales and the service was fairly good. Everyone I was with really enjoyed their meal, so definitely the spot for good pub grub in St Albans.

I've been coming to this pub for more than 10 years and have never been disappointed. I've seen it change hands multiple times and even then the quality of service, the food and drinks hadn't dropped in it's standards. Having mostly come for drinks with mates, I can confidently say this is a great local pub to socialise come rain or shine with plenty of room both indoor and outdoors. Whilst it still has that traditional pub look and feel, it's not dark and dingy like a lot of other pubs in the local vicinity. It retains a classy look and feel while maintaining the authenticity of a traditional British pub. They have also invested heavily into their beer garden which is the best thing they did as it's much more inviting than it used to be and great even when raining due to having plenty of covered space. The selection of drinks never disappoints and the staff are always friendly and have excellent banter. The food really takes it up a notch for pub grub as they have all the classics, fish and chips, burgers, pies, and a few other unique dishes too all made to an exceptional standard. I honestly couldn't recommend this pub enough and I'm hoping this review will support The White Lion in what is a turbulent time for the hospitality sector where many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Even with all the other choices of pub in St Albans, I find myself gravitating towards White Lion for the reasons above. You can't go wrong! 2024 Roast Dinner Update: Whilst my review score won't change because the overall experience is still great, what I will say is that the Sunday Roasts are HUGE, but it is more quantity over quality if I'm being brutally honest.

My second lunch in recent weeks. I’m told the steak & ale pie was very nice , I had the delicious British rack of lamb 👍🏻

Stopped off here after a 10 mile walk. Never been before. What a truly lovely find. Lovely funny chatty staff. Lovely locals. Had probably the best toasted sandwich EVER! They also have a lovely outside area. Fully recommend!

We loved the food. I ate the fish and chips and I am making my own ice cream with chocolate sauce, marshmallows and sprinkles. It was the best meal I’ve ever had. Bella (age 6)

Worth finding this place, just off the high street. Had a great evening meal, menu had something for everyone and was served by Becs who couldn’t have been any nicer - we enjoyed our few hours of food and wine here. Definitely worth finding

We loved our short stay at The White Lion at the beginning of a St Alban's pub crawl. The large beer garden is beautiful and we especially enjoyed the artist playing crowd pleasers on the guitar. The staff was very friendly and offered teats for our doggies. 🐩🐶

Lovely pub with a calm, welcoming atmosphere. We had lunch here, the food was excellent and the service was so friendly. Well worth visiting and supporting local English pubs like this.

Cracking roast dinner - fairly priced - top service! One of the best Sunday Roasts in St Albans - they managed to squeeze us in - table of 9. Bex provided some great service and was very attentive. Perfect

We just had the most wonderful meal! Our server, Lucy, was absolutely delightful—so polite and attentive, and she brought everything out just right. I can't wait to come back again! x

Really nice and cozy pub in St Albans. The food was absolutely delicious! We popped in for a roast dinner and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I really liked their apple crumble tart. The pub was busy with couples, families, and friends enjoying their Sunday afternoon, and it created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, especially on a cold day outside. The ladies who served us were helpful, friendly, and always smiling, which made our visit even more enjoyable. A wonderful place to relax, enjoy great food, and feel at home. Highly recommend!

My party was looking for a place to eat last minute, we made a reservation 10 mins before arriving and had a lovely table waiting for us. The atmosphere is great, with nice lighting and great decor. Lovely staff who greeted us and served warmly. The food was well prepared, presented and explained. Great quality and reasonably priced.

Some friends, love this location and we made reservations ahead of time. When we did this, we also looked over the menu and the order what we’d like to have when we came in. The place was extremely nice and quaint and kind of really cool to sit around and talk with your friends at. We ordered drinks so we had some friends eat some Guinness, which they enjoyed and me and someone split a red wine wash or some other friends of our split of white wine. Both were delicious and nutritious. The food was awesome when I get that straight out everything looked smelled and tasted delicious. The one thing that was a shame is I ordered venison and we thought there was a misprint on the calories because everything else was about 1300 cal and they said 500 so I thought it was actually a mistake a 1500 nope it was 500 because the portion size was itty-bitty. Even though it tasted delicious it was just not big enough. It was more of a starter size than an actual full on meal the turkey fish and chips burgers and everything else else was just tiny. The desserts looked delicious. Would be my wife split an apple crumble and it was awesome. Some of our friends got the Guinness/Bailey’s milkshake, sticky, toffee, pudding and more. Honestly, this was a really great price. The prices were a little bit high and again since I got the venison, I was expecting a little bit more, but if it wasn’t for that, it was definitely an awesome place to eat.

Gorgeous cosy pub in St Albans . The roast dinner was so delicious and included so many options . Our server Rosie, was lovely and so welcoming. In fact, all of the staff made sure that we had a great time. We believe that roast dinners are served until the evening here which worked very well for us as we aren’t keen on dining too early .

We celebrated my daughter’s wedding at The White Lion on Friday and had the time of our lives. The food was amazing, service at the bar quick and absolutely charming and Ash and Becks (owners) were on hand for anything we needed. Thank you so much!

My group came here for our Christmas celebration together and it would not have been the same without our waitress, Bex. She was absolutely incredible with us and so hospitable. It was a very busy Saturday night and with lots of people stood in her way, she maintained such professionalism and kindness. We could not stop talking about how well she treated us. We also love her croissant tattoo if that could be passed on! On top of this, the food was insane! I am vegetarian so it can be tricky finding options, but the mushroom pie was out of this world good! 100% recommend this place and WILL be back!

One of the best pubs in St Albans. They have a new chef with a great selection of meals, I had haggis Bon Bons followed by pork belly. Cooked to perfection, wish I had space to try the bread and butter pudding! Served by the lovely Lucy and Becky who were really attentive, 10/10!

Had a great Sunday lunch, the lamb special was spot on. Nice touch being able to get a mini dessert with a coffee when you’re too full for the big one. Bex gave top-notch service, really friendly and good laugh. Loved the garden and the interiors too.

We were a party of four. We came in for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent. The service we received from Lucy and others was brilliant. The atmosphere was what you’d expect from a traditional English pub. Decor great and the loos were immaculate. It’s was our first time to the White Lion StAlbans and we will definitely be back.

An 11 out of 10 experience - what a brilliant pub! We went for Sunday lunch for one of my friend's birthdays and it was such a good experience. The food was delicious, you can tell the ingredients were really well sourced and expertly cooked. The team couldn't have been friendlier, this makes such a huge difference to your experience and they really went the extra mile, even giving our dog a free doggy ice cream. The pub had such a warm and welcoming atmosphere - this is how the best pubs should be but sadly many of them aren't like this now. Definitely recommend a visit and we will be back!

Discovered recently and I’ve now been 4-5 times, at various times of the week. Lovely food, super friendly polite staff. Weekdays at lunch are super quiet, perfect foe catching up with old friends after a dog walk, weekends are buzzing with happy faces and the sound of chat. No screens/ music - heaven exists here in St A…

We went as a group of 6 on a Sunday evening and everything about the visit was top notch. Table was cleared down quickly to allow us to sit early, the servers were all friendly and totally on their game. Top marks to Becs who first served us at the bar and later came and chatted to us during the meal. Also top marks to our server, I am sorry I did not get his name but was a real pleasure and made sure we were looked after and drinks were kept a-coming. The food was great and we will definitely be back.

Came here on a Sunday without booking just before the kitchen shut. I ordered the beef Sunday roast and was extremely impressed. Generous portions, quality beef and a good selection of vegetables. One of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had in a long time - a bargain at £12. Cosy inside and friendly staff. Would recommend!

‘Proper’ pub, with great selection of well kept ales. Great gin selection too - with all of the correct garnishes. Mixed eating experience here. Had a great Sunday roast on one occasion and a fairly sparse experience the second time. Also a fairly meagre Ploughman’s when out with a big group of friends in the summer. Really friendly staff and excellent service earn, in my humble opinion, the pub four (verging on five) stars!

As always, we had a superb meal with the new manager & his team in charge. The staff are a delight & are so attentive & Menu is so good (& I’m so fussy!!), there’s something for everyone - great English food & so well done. Nice to see meat pies & Shepherds pie on the menu. I could eat so many things on this menu & I’m a notoriously fussy eater! This time I had the crispy duck salad which was lovely BUT there was hardly any duck in mine & my friend who had the dish too, said the same, shame as it was great, hence a star dropped. We go there quite a bit so obviously it hasn’t put us off! Maybe the lovely manager & his partner could mention the minimal duck to the chef so he can put more in next time?! So rare to find a good independent restaurant in St Albans with lovely staff. It is fabulous here & the garden a delight! See you on Father’s Day with our whole family!!

It's a great pub and garden, but the Korean chicken burger had nothing Korean about it - just a fried chicken burger, no sauce. The Korean sauce should be the main bit!

I had visited this pub during the afternoon on a weekday and ordered as part of the lunch menu, this included a selection of meals and a very limited selection of drinks for £14.50. I went for the Fish and Chips. On the menu it was the only option that curiously said in italics 'lunch size' at the end of it, so I had a bit of a warning before it came. It was an extremely skinny piece of fish, as seen in the pictures. The meal itself was fine, nothing particularly special. The curry sauce provided was too watery. The only beer available as part of the deal was Amstel, so that was fine. Overall it was okay. I probably wouldn't get this particular deal again here.

Lovely pub, friendly staff, BUT food average, small portions and overpriced for portion size. A real shame as very handy for us not sure good value for money.

A mixed bag here. Before I get to the food, the venue is pleasant. A cute old building full of character on a lovely street . The atmosphere was ok… but could’ve been better- there was a small but loud group of people at the bar of which at least some were off duty staff (I could tell by what was said) the conversation was too loud and too crude- I now even know the “vital statistics”of one gent. There was also quite a lot of swearing. I also think I’d loose the dog water bowl that was clearly from a previous customers pet, but sat next to our table for the full meal. Food. Well it wasn’t a great start being greeted by a list of things they didn’t have (and typically was most of the stuff we’d chosen after looking online) We changed our choices but we’re already disappointed. Starters. Calamari was very good if slightly too salty. Pate was good but maybe you could stretch to a full slice of toast each? Mains. Pie was decent with a lot of mash and nice gravy. Steak- tasted good but poorly presented. Spread out on a plate the whole dish looked lost. A silly little pile of four button mushrooms would be far better replaced with one whole large mushroom for example. Korean chicken burger. While the chicken was nicely done I’m struggling to understand what was Korean about it? It was served with Asian slaw in the bun- this would be better on the side, but otherwise what was Korean about it? It was nice fried chicken but that’s it. Overall, disappointing. It has potential to be good but as it is now I wouldn’t return, sorry.

Hate to be the bad guy but have to say it’s a very disappointing Sunday roast. Gravy is bland. Yorkshire pudding, beef and potato unbelievably dry :( . Don’t know how long they have been left in the oven to be this dry. If they were actually kept in oven to stay hot, curious when it’s served it’s barely warm. Nice interior and friendly staff. It’s just food is giving me Sunday depression. Only good thing I could think about is that the portion is good. So you won’t be both depressed and hungry.

My wife and I ordered fish and chips...if you like batter with a tiny piece of fish this place is for you. Very under whelming
