Really lovely looking pub and a big bonus for Dog friendliness which is always a plus in my books! Cute interior too! I chose the beef onglet which was served MR, beautiful sauce. Couldn’t resist a burrata with jalapeño and bbq corn which really complimented the spring feel in the air. Really lovely! Can’t fault and will Be back
Update Jun2025 The quality of the food remains consistently high. This visit's odessy through gastronomy featured: steamed Scottish mussels in a sauce of white wine, cream, garlic & parsley; seared King Atlantic scallops with artichoke puree, pickled mushrooms, bacon lardons; and a chocolate brownie with seasonal berries. Washed down with First Fleet chardonnay, Australia; Finca La Colonia malbec, Argentina; and Tanquery zero gin & tonic (good news for designated drivers, a cracking soft G&T). Update Apr2024 Another superb meal, packed with strong flavours, cooked and presented to perfection. New wine list coming soon! Ndjua Palmiers: an elegant balance of texture and spice. Onglet of beef: a soft steak with consistent texture (medium-rare to rare), with a rich peppercorn sauce that needed the buttered cabbage to wipe every last drop off the plate. Creme brulee: semi-sweet, congruency throughout the creme, caramelised on point. The burghers of St Albans have never had it so good. Book early. Book in advance. Book now.
We had our Christmas dinner celebration at the Rose & Crown in Sandridge and it was absolutely wonderful! The food was amazing, full of flavour and perfectly cooked for a festive evening. The atmosphere was cosy and welcoming, and the waiters were really lovely, friendly, attentive, and made us feel very well looked after. We all had a fantastic time and will definitely be back. Highly recommended!
First Sunday Roast here with my boys. The half roast chicken was absolutely huge, exactly what my lads needed after football training. Devoured the gravy. Brilliant find.
i had a buetiful roast this sunday served to nme by increadibly cheerful and attentive staff who created a great atmosphere throughout the pub . would highly recomend visiting - best half chicken ive ever had .
One of the best roasts I've had in my whole bloody life! Great service also, super speedy and friendly. Will come again and bring all my friend.
The Sunday Roast was Amazing! Easily one of the best Sunday roasts we’ve had, we’ll definitely be back.
This place should be busier! Wonderful meal, live music (unobtrusive and not expected), lovely food, helpful and attentive staff. Burratta starter was good, one main of fish and chips (done excellently) and the other, scallops, both excellent. Food obviously cooked fresh, high quality ingredients, and the chef knows what he's doing. Not too expensive, £120 for 2 with a few drinks, really good night out. The live music was good too. Very authentic, friendly, felt a bit like an evening round the piano in a pub in a way. If you want a different, romantic, friendly night out then try here. I'm fussy to the point of not liking myself, but this was a good night out.
Had Sunday dinner here last week....just wow from the moment we got in there the staff were attentive the owner and her husband went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our food and drinks....I shall certainly be re booking if I can get a space ...also the open fire going at just the right time of year...keep up the good work guys and hopefully see you Sunday 👍
Where to start, I guess with the 5 stars across the board, but what makes it 5⭐️, Teresa. The pub, the courteous staff, it all comes from a shared mindset, they all believe in the message she wants to deliver, then you get to the food she produces and sends out from the kitchen. It would be crass of me to state this is the best roast ever because it much more than that. It’s home cooked with professional complexity, it’s without fault. The flavours remain on the tongue almost dancing as you take your next bite. I honestly wish I could manage a desert but alas not this time. We all say our Sunday roast at home is better when we go out to eat, Teresa literally dispelled that myth with staff who smile as they deliver it.
I had a private event at the pub on Saturday night with around 100 people. Their staff were amazing, so helpful before , during and after the event. Teresa was amazing in arrangements and everyone had the best time. Highly recommend this venue on all accounts.
Came for a Sunday lunch to celebrate my BIG birthday… left wondering if I could move in permanently. The food was so delicious I briefly considered adopting the chef - portions were generous too! The pub itself is the perfect “proper pub” - cosy, warm, and boasting a fire so gorgeous I almost sang it a birthday song! The staff were brilliant - friendly, attentive, and clearly experts at dealing with overexcited birthday people (me). Had an absolutely lovely afternoon. Highly recommend and will definitely be back, possibly wearing stretchy trousers next time.
Had a brilliant Sunday lunch at The Rose and Crown. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming — proper cosy pub vibes, complimented by an open fire. The roast was everything you want on a Sunday: perfectly cooked meat, crispy roast potatoes, generous portions, and rich, comforting gravy that tied it all together. The vegetables were fresh and well-seasoned, and the Yorkshire pudding was spot on. Service was very friendly and relaxed without being slow, and we never felt rushed. A great place to unwind, eat well, and actually enjoy a Sunday afternoon. We’ll definitely be back. 🍽️🍷
We haven't eaten here yet but plan to soon! We came in for a drink twice this week and really liked it. The fires were on and on both visits the team were so lovely and welcoming. It's a comfortable pub and very dog friendly (our dog was absolutely spoiled with a blanket, a water bowl, treats, and fuss). We are coming back with parents/in laws close to Christmas and we were helpfully able to choose a good table for Christmas drinks. Parking was super easy. It's great after a walk at Heartwood.
I had my 21st birthday party at the Rose and Crown and I couldn’t recommend it more if you’re looking to have an event here. Teresa was great with helping us plan the event and the other staff were incredibly helpful on the day, helping us decorate the room before the party. The room was spacious, but cosy. The bar was open until 12. I had around 50 people there and everyone had a lovely time.
I held my mother's celebration of life here. She made it so much more personal by adding my mums possessions to the tables. Leaving out her favourite tipple. We were blown away by the food, my mums favourite music playing in the background and their attention to detail can not be matched. Staff very accommodating. Great atmosphere, my mums love of sunflowers and poppies in all the vases. Perfect venue for such a sad occasion.
I had my 21st birthday party here and it was just amazing. I first called up the R&C to enquire about my party and Teresa immediately invited me in to talk the details and specifics. Everything was made so easy and accommodating for me. In the afternoon of my party, my mum and I dropped round my cake and decorations, the room was decorated so perfectly. The staff were helpful at all times and very attentive to small details throughout the night. I couldn't recommend this pub enough for any birthday, celebration or even just a drink in the evening . Thank you to everyone involved, specifically Teresa, for making my birthday so special. Evie and the rest of my family.
We came for a Sunday roast with our family and friends. We had chicken and beef and all meat was cooked to perfection. The veg was fresh and the gravy tasty. Fabulous yorkshire puddings too! The staff were all working incredibly hard and doing a great job despite the fact that the pub was packed with diners. Well done to all, we will be back
Quality Sunday roast with good sized portions. The service was good, though there was a bit of waiting between courses, understandably, as it was busy. There were not many options on the children's menu, thankfully we were ok with roast chicken and trimmings and it was very much enjoyed. Good ice cream too!
Incredible food and friendly staff. Best padron peppers and the tuna ceviche was life-changing!
Just the best menu for a casual Saturday lunch. Loads of choice and every dish served with attention to detail and great flavours! From the imaginative ‘Small plates’ options like tuna ceviche or sweet & sour sticky chicken through to lovely main dishes of all kinds. All washed down with a glass or two of fizz - perfect Saturday vibes! Friendly and accommodating staff, and pets warmly welcomed. Everyone should try it…
had my mums wake here on wednesday!! can’t fault theresa and her staff !! lovely cosy place . food amazing they bent over backwards to fulfill our needs !!! love ya all x
High quality and well prepared and presented food. Good well kept bitter. Thoroughly recommended.
Fantastic pub in a quaint village, the food is as good as Michelin star restaurants that I’ve eaten in! The staff are friendly and the service is exceptional. Great real fires, you must try the wing back chairs in the dining room. Great garden and it’s a dog friendly pub. Will definitely be returning again and again.
Great Sunday lunch in a lively vibrant pub who are very dog friendly.
Fantastic Food, fantastic atmosphere. Teresa, Adrian and Otto were the perfect team. Their chef delivered on all accounts with regards to the food, well cooked, tastefully plated and deliciously flavourful. It was a pleasure meeting Good Boy Otto and we will definitely return when visiting my family in St Albans. Keep up the good work from one Welshie to another
Best roast dinner ever! Went for an Easter Sunday roast, big portion sizes, great value for money, great service and food was absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend this place to everyone!
I had a Friday lunch with my friend. We ordered the Tomahawk steak to share which was superb. The homemade chunky chips were terrific. We really liked the interior and in particular the Authentic fire places!
Excellent slightly early Mothers day lunch. Knowing Chef Paul and his amazing food from his previous role and hearing good things about the Rose and Crown I took the extended family for lunch here on Saturday as a slightly early Mothers day treat. We couldn't have been made more welcome by all the staff, especially my two girls. The provision of coloring supplies was a very welcome touch. The food was well received all round and the wine list was approved by my wine loving in laws. Particular mentions about the balance of flavors in both the assortment of snacks we ordered in place of starters and the mains from were made by all. The salt beef &smoked cheese croquette gets a special mention from me. For desert a variety were ordered and shared with the Peanut and miso (i think) chocolate bar particularly standing out. I look forward to visiting again for the food, maybe Sunday roast. Note I think you would not be outplace here if just having a pint and a sandwich/snack while out and about or finishing a walk in Heartwood in this dog friendly Pub. We were told there are plans in motion for the beer garden in summer too.
Recently attended a wedding reception here and was such a lovely set up, my friend hired a wonderful local singer, the set up was great in the garden as everyone mingled and could hear the singer
Great food, great service and a beautiful pub!
The NEW Rose and Crown Visited the Rose and Crown last week. Massively impressed with the refurbishment of the pub. Tasteful decor. Warm and inviting staff. As for the food 10/10!!! Tuna ceviche and arancini starters were delicious and the pork schnitzel main was unbelievable. We were blown away by how tasty the food was. Not just your typical pub menu which was very refreshing. Looking forward to returning to try the rest of the menu. Do not hesitate to visit the Rose and Crown, you won’t be disappointed!!
Had a delicious lunch - party of 12 and we all had lovely food. The atmosphere was great and Teresa Paul and staff really looked after us. My first time since the new licensees took over. Won’t be the last.
Lovely, wonderful, great service from the crew and extremely helpful and understanding.
I threw my 40th birthday party at this venue and I wouldn't change a thing! It was absolutely perfect. When shortlisting venues, this was not my first choice on paper, but from the moment I met the owner Teresa, I bought into her genuine nature and her willingness to go over and above to accommodate my extravagant needs...not to mention immediately falling for the venue, which is extremely cosy and, so well put together. When one throws a party, they paint a picture beforehand, knowing that even if three-quarters of their needs are met, they will walk away happy. This was not even close to the experience I had; the venue looked stunning, the food was delicious (and I had many people with dietary requirements), the staff were so professional and friendly, all guests felt looked after and, everything I wanted came together beyond what I could have ever imagined. It was the perfect day and the Rose and Crown in Sandridge made it happen. Thank you all, so very much. Needless to say, I couldn't recommend this place more if I tried. I did a lot of research before picking a location for my special day and I hope my review makes it easier for you to decide on a venue (this one)...
Gorgeous village pub with lovely atmosphere but drinks were astronomical in price - 2 large gin and tonics and 2 packets of crisps £28 - more than London prices - I did question it and they agreed it was expensive!
Came on a recommendation, service was honestly the worst I’ve ever had, we sat next to a table of two that had clearly finished their starters, waiting 15 minutes before our drinks order was taken, drink came another ten minutes after, the waitress all the while just ignoring the table next to us to the point where we had to tell them that we think they would probably like their starters taken away, when the waitres came back she asked them if they would like to see the dessert menu, they told her it would probably be best to have their mains first 😅we place our food order with the drinks, 2 roast beef Sunday roast, we got there at 13.00 and didn’t get food until 14.30, my friend ordered a glass of red which she had to go up to the bar to order, the waiter came back and said we don’t do the cote de Rhone by the glass, she opened the menu and pointed out politely that they do, he apologised and went off to get the wine, came back with something tbat we didn’t think was cote de Rhône, get to the bill, it was a Malbec… I will say the roast was very good however warm at best
Not a good experience. We were a lunchtime party of 4. Two of our group ordered the burger. The burgers arrived cooked pink. The waitress told us that's the way the chef cooks them. Nothing about this was on the menu. The meals were returned to the kitchen for further cooking. Obviously, lunch for us was now in two sittings. The burgers were returned in an inedible state. Add a couple of other issues and the conclusion is not too revisit in a hurry. We did not ask, however, the burgers were taken off the bill.
We had a gathering for 8 adults and 6 children in the side room. Good for children but a bit Dark. The roast dinner was not the best. Served up nicely but the roast potatoes were pale and there was not much meat. The service staff were lovely and helpful. The rest of the pub looked great
Really disappointed..The presentation of food is good but taste is not up to the mark .My kids burger was really dry and not taste good. I am not happy with the service as well. We ask a menu card to keep in our table and she said 'For What ? No cleanliness!! Especially in the toilet.I felt like I am in a housefly world. There is full of houseflies in dine in area. The cup they served to us is not cleaned properly.
Awful. We were a group of 9 (4 adults and 5 kids). Booked for 1pm Sunday lunch. Had a call on Saturday to tell us that they didn't have Sunday lunch food available so would be doing regular daytime lunch menu instead. When we arrived half the drink options weren't available. Drink order eventually took 20+ minutes, food took over an hour and didn't come together. Had to remind staff of what we ordered to get it all. And it was all very average. The bill had another table's food on it, and then when we asked to see the manager we were told no one was in charge. It showed as staff were so slow and uninterested in serving customers.
Hi Teresa. Thanks for your reply. We said service was atrocious as we left the pub because by then, after the shocking service, we had asked for our bill 3 times! Can’t believe your reply about the fireplace. Take a look at your website where you show pictures a working fireplace - so that is probably false advertising, I guess. Also there is nothing to prevent me from taking leftovers home for my dogs - after all I paid for it!!!!!!! Take a look at Dishcult.com reviews - see any trends? I still maintain AVOID THIS PUB.
A Saturday lunch with family was unfortunately marred by poor organisation and communication from this pub. Having made a booking online for 13:30, we were informed shortly afterwards that there would be live ‘lounge’ music playing at the time we had our table booked. Upon calling the pub for more information, we were told that the music, being ‘lounge’ music, would not be too loud and that we would be seated far away so as to not cause disturbance. The morning of the booking, we were once again called by the pub. This time being informed that there would be a baby shower at the same time of our booking. One wonders why we were notified only the morning of the booking and not in advance, perhaps giving us a chance to book elsewhere. Being too late to find another pub to book for lunch, we (wrongly) opted to continue with our booking at the Rose and Crown. Upon arriving, we found our table was at the entrance, next to the live music being set up. Immediately, we realised that conversation could not be held due to the obnoxiously excessive volume of what was most definitely not ‘lounge’ music. Asking the staff if the volume could be lowered, the answer was ‘no’. Fortunately, we were offered a table on the other side of the bar, where the baby shower was coming to an end. Located between the bar and the bathrooms, many people walked past, barging into our chairs on the way. Many went to the smoking area outside, leaving the door wide open for us to feel the cold coming in, meaning that we had to frequently stand up and close it ourselves. With the music now in full swing, the volume was still very loud and conversation was difficult to maintain, especially being a group of six. The menu we were presented with was a selection of sandwiches and 2 burgers, unlike the menus advertised online. Again, no communication was made that the menu would be different for our visit. Food (4 burgers and 2 sandwiches) took one hour to arrive, with no explanation as to why it took so long given that no other punters were eating at the time. After complaining, the food promptly arrived. Mediocre quality at best. The only redeeming feature was the blonde waitress who was attentive and kind. Other than that, what was meant to be a pleasant family outing was ruined due to the establishment’s lack of concern and, most importantly, lack of clear and early communication to regarding the ‘lounge’ music and the baby shower. If a full on loud live act is to be held, my advice would be to simply upfront and transparent with those who have made a booking. If you are after a relaxing weekend lunch, this place is to be avoided at all costs. A real shame.
A really bad experience on Father's Day. Booked for 2 adults and 2 kids, they didn't have kids menu on the day ( Father's day!!!), roast was absolutely shocking for the price they charge, Yorkshire pudding rock hard. Very very disappointed and doubt we will ever come back .
The worst Sunday lunch I have ever had in a British pub. Horrible food. Tiny portions. Horrendous service. Not worth spending even a pound in this place.
