The gun has and always will be a family favourite for us. We have celebrated many birthdays and special occasions here. We also stop off for lunch in the summer to sit in the garden. The food is always made to an extremely high standard even during busy periods. We also love that the menu changes every so often and along with the seasons however they keep classic favourites. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. I highly recommend visiting. :)
We visited on Christmas Eve in the afternoon and had a fabulous lunch. Every dishes were flavourful and nicely presented. Impeccable service.
What a surprise! I came here following a recommendation from a website specialised in Sunday roasts, and it was exactly as described. The place feels and tastes authentic, not much frills, all concentrated on the taste. The atmosphere is great, very relaxed crowd and all very looked after. The place was prepared for Halloween, with a menu that would match the theme. Beer selection is very good, with a variety of beers for every taste, from rather commercial to local. I definitely recommend trying the Apple and Plum crumble, very very well done.
We had a great dinner mid September 2025. A group of 3 of us dined for starters and mains. Great food, great waiter. A+++
Brilliant pub located in a very quiet country road. Lovely interior and a fantastic dining area with French doors leading to a large patio dining and garden. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The menu is small but should cater for all tastes. Food quality is high in particular the fish and chips. Best fish and mushy peas I've had in a long time. Well recommended, worth a visit.
Stopped with our Motorhome for lunch. They allow overnight stops for free as long as you drink or eat at the pub. Obvious decision was to stay and enjoy the very good ales and the food. Curry was really special. And then relax in evening sunshine. No stress fantastic.
Lovely location and views and a beautiful play area for the kiddies, food was delicious but some could do with a little more taste I found my chicken pretty bland which was gutting as looks fantastic! The fish was lovely and delicate and the lamb shank just fell off the bone. The staff where lovely just found service a little slow at time as was eating desert while we still had dirty plates. But part from that beautiful atmosphere and we had a lovely afternoon. Oh desert was epic !
Delicious food, homemade pizzas are really good and fresh. Alcohol free cocktails were also great value and really tasty, perfect if you are pregnant or just don’t want to drink. Friendly staff and it is also dog friendly. Good value overall.
Fantastic little country pub with beautiful outdoor and indoor seating areas. There is a burger shack outside too for the summer days. They even have got a proper pizza oven, which we didn't order but the pizza s looked amazing. The steaks are great and my English shish kebab was excellent. Highly recommended, will return!
We had an amazing time, great food with a nice presentation, excellent and friendly customer service. We will be back. Today we had an amazing time for lunch. Beautiful sunny day we got a table by the terrace door which was great for enjoying the weather but from inside. Really busy as always! Well done for the whole team. Keep up what you are doing!
The gun is it on the top 5 of my favourite pubs. Starting from the rustic decore, to the exceptional food, passing trough the attentive and joyful team members, every experience is phenomenal from start to finish. The meat they source locally has never let us down. The Gun has become part of our life as we dine in on average every 8 weeks. Well done Team!
They served lovely cocktails and the sourdough pizzas made in their pizza oven are thin, crispy and topped with great quality local ingredients. They change some parts of the menu seasonally and nice to have some variety. Also a lovely sun trap garden to enjoy the British sunshine in. They show you where their local ingredients are from. We are a big fan of the Wildshark wine they get from Maidstone. They also have scrumptious sweet potato fries… if you’re a fan.
Stopped at this lovely pub and restaurant during a bike ride last week. There's a very nice garden to enjoy pint in the sunshine (when it finally appears this spring/summer 🌞). The staff were very welcoming and attentive. Well worth a visit.
Fresh Fish, Delish Scampi and Attentive Staff!! The best Sunday afternoon and evening we spent while visiting from Manchester. Iulia (Julia) was polite and professional and made our visit very special. I highly recommend meatballs and scallops for starters which were delicious. Mains were fish and chips. They were perfect, fresh and tasty. We had earl grey with a slice of lemon as a finale to our weekend getaway. Shoutout to Iulia (Julia) for being such an amazing and attentive host, the chef should also receive our highest regards. We will definitely be back!!!!
Today my wife and 9 month-old visited The Gun for a Valentine's Lunch. We booked in advance and were seated by the pizza oven. This was great for our son as he enjoyed watching the chef work. The starter was delicious breads, oils and hummus. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all. My wife had the banana blossom fish and chips for her main. She said the batter was lovely and crispy. I had the quinoa burger. The chips were perfect and the burger was full of flavour and filling. Staff were attentive and met all our needs. The only suggestion I could make was to have a changing mat in the gents' toilets as my wife had to do all of the nappy changes. After visiting The Lazy Fox, The Vineyard and now The Gun, it is clear Elite Pubs are doing great things!
This pub is sourcing local produce from a 25 mile radius. I'd recommend goats cheese salad (or pizza) as this cheese is simply divine! Steak lovers won't be disappointed either. Good quality fillet is totally worth a trip.
Amazing food!! Food is great, staff are great and the location is great - just go and have a relaxing time. Lots of photos attached in the review so you can see for yourself. Would definitely go again!
Absolutely incredible, food was excellent, had the calzone pizza and my partner had the lamb steak, honestly one of the best meals we have even had, staff were polite and welcoming, and the desserts were gorgeous as well, especially the lemon tart
Great food, quality service. Delightful old pub that, in spite of being a chain, feels like a traditional pub in every way. Warmly greeted at the door, and great service throughout. I found plenty of slimming friendly dishes and had seared scallops, my companion had a burger which was the best pub burger we'd ever had. We'll definitely be back
Fantastic 👏. Great friendly service. Food simple delicious. We will be returning. Especially excited about the new adventure shack's
Really enjoyed going for dinner here. The food was delicious and well presented. The staff were very friendly. It had a good atmosphere. We all had a lovely time at The Gun. Spacious car park. Would highly recommend visiting The Gun.
10 out of 10. First time experience was of friendly and helpful staff, a lovely building and some amazing food. I'm not going to lie, I was going to take a photo of my king prawn linguine but thought, I'll just have one quick taster first....all you would of got was a photo of an empty bowl! I will be back again, so I will try to keep a stronger resolve for a photo next time.... For a pub, it's an amazing place. Book a table and Enjoy.
The food and cocktails were absolutely delicious and the service was great! 😍
Lovely country pub, with lots of character and friendly staff. Lovely garden room for the colder, wetter days and a garden with views for those warmer, sunnier days. Good menu including vegetarian options and an in-house pizza oven. Lots of parking, including an electric vehicle charging point. Part of the "Elite" pubs.
Excellent pub with a great selection of food and drinks. Presentation was top notch and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend this place to try. #TopPubs
More restaurant than pub. Great food, excellent service. All very good (lunchtime meal for two)
Yes and yes. Lovely pub indeed. We bought some sharer dishes that were pretty nice, but were fairly limited for vegetarians. The staff are really lovely and make you feel welcome and the location is so peaceful. A lovely atmosphere, clean and professional. Prices about what you'd expect for a classy country pub, and you don't mind paying given the service and quality. There is a small play area outside so the kids can play while the adults relax. Well done. I'd come back.
Lovely pub, slightly tucked away. Staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Food was absolutely lovely and a good selection for all. Local beers went down very well!
Family gathering with kids and friends from New Zealand over. Friendly welcome and excellent service from Tom, he really looked after us well and he is a credit to the pub. Food was lovely, speedy service and very nice atmosphere. All staff were very nice. Ask for Tom, he'll look after you!!
There were two really good ales available one of which was 3.9% so good if you're driving and an excellent beer. The haddock and chips was well cooked; not fatty at all. It was about 30cm long and with the chips and mushy peas required what looked like a serving dish to hold it all. I didn't eat again that day. I would thoroughly recommend The Gun.
Lovely pub, great atmosphere. We had lunch here, service was very friendly and quick. Higher end pub prices but well worth it. Had the gut lover salad and goats cheese and it was divine
Had mums wake at The Gun today, can't thank the staff enough for the amazing food and care, really lovely place and kind staff, made my dad's day easier. Will definately come back for food in the future
From start to finish, we cannot fault the experience we had tonight at The Gun and would thoroughly recommend. The service was faultless being greeted by all the staff, speed of ordering and food arriving was excellent and one of the staff's knowledge on the wines grown on their own vineyard was superb. Food was delicious and plentiful. I only wish we had a pub as good as this where we live in Devon!
I don’t normally leave reviews however I had to because this place is amazing! The food is delicious, so fresh and yummy! I had every last bit even though I’m full to the brim! I had the hummus and garlic flatbread - 10/10, followed by the haddock & chips - 10/10, and for dessert a biscoff cheesecake - 10/10. All were presented beautifully to the eye, and to the mouth :) Will definitely be coming here again.
I was treated to dinner here as a birthday gift. Lots of parking and a beautiful-looking country pub from the outside. Inside were the most wonderful flowers, absolutely stunning. The fish and chips were OK, It was a bit dry. Although presented very nicely. The desserts were delicious, melt in your mouth sponge with dates. I would go again as it's got a relaxing vibe. Obviously popular because it was busy even on a Monday evening. Lots of walks are available nearby too, so perfect for a drink in the gardens after.
A lovely, beamy, yet tastefully modernised pub with a huge grassy beer garden and friendly, super-efficient staff. My boyfriend had the calzone which he said was amazing, I had the fish and chips which was unfortunately a bit soggy/ greasy. Generally though, we had a lovely evening here.
Had a table booked for Father’s Day, came with my fiancé and 3 month old. Place was packed and very busy. Staff were all lovely and accommodating. Didn’t wait long at all for drinks or food. Everything made from scratch and fresh, really nice food and cooked perfect. Nice big garden Plenty of parking. Well worth a visit!!
Decent food, EXCELLENT service from the lovely Tom, and dog-friendly. Best of all, a choice of a dozen or so different British wines: white, pink, red, fizzy. Most, if not all, available by the glass. I don't profess to be a wine buff, but I have yet to find an English wine I dislike. And I want to support British producers. Marked down because we weren't really gripped by any of the starters or mains on the menu. Instead, we had a series of sharing plates.
Welcoming pub with a separate dog-friendly dining area. Well presented, flavoursome and satisfying food, but not a wide choice of drinks. There was only one cider and house wine could be ordered by the glass, but others only by the bottle. This did not spoil our family get-together.
Hello, I went to the gun for dinner with my sister while camping last weekend. Nice environment however slightly pricey. Staff where great. I ordered the 21 day 8 oz steak and asked for it medium but it came out very close to well done seemed a bit small and was fairly chewy. Everything else was fine. My sister ordered a vegan meal and her plate looked amazing. I did not snap a picture of this only my own meal. Service was good food came out in good time.
Used this lovely pub many times. Lovely quiet setting. Always had good food and service but not the case on Monday arrived for lunch and staff were less than welcoming. We ordered pizza and fries and they were really good. Didn't expect anything less! We then decided to order a dessert to share. We waited for half an hour and nothing. We decided to check how much longer it was going to be as we were on a schedule only to find it was never going to arrive! A mix up in the kitchen apparently! We got a refund and didn't feel as though the staff were at all bothered by this. We understand there was a wake booked in that day but a warm welcome and a smile would have gone a long way. Disappointing.
Went for family meal on Boxing Day Food was good and not too expensive for Boxing Day The service was fine but I just got the impression the staff really didn’t want to be there and because we were the only people there in the room it was quite gloomy we tried hard but it was difficult and there wasn’t even any music playing to counteract the cold atmosphere. I wasn’t expecting a song and dance act but some smiles and friendliness would have done well . I doubt we would go again sadly
A lovely traditional pub, good friendly service in a nice atmosphere. But the food was very disappointing. My wife says her haddock with risotto was quite nice - after she had sent it back because it was almost cold! My venison pie with roast potatoes and veg was not great. Pie was hot but pastry overcooked and contents dry and lacking in flavour. Roasties had clearly been kept warm for an hour or two - they were hard on the outside and not hot either.
We've been visiting the Gun for some time, because the food is generally very good, and it's a nice place to spend time with visiting family. But today the service was churlish and rude, from three different members of staff. It was quite surprising and took away the sense of it being a special time where we mattered. We hate the whole tendency towards service charges in general. I know many restaurants add this but when times are so hard adding 12% automatically is just too much. It can make you think twice about going at all. Having the opportunity to add a tip of your own choosing would feel far better. Though tbh today we wouldn't give one at all. It doesn't take much to make customers to feel valued and respected, rather than snarled at. Three months later no one has got back to me, as the reply said they would, which says a lot about how much they care about customers.
The food here was genuinely very good — everything we ordered came out hot, fresh, and well-cooked. Portion sizes were generous and it felt like good value for money, so credit to the kitchen because they’re clearly doing something right. Unfortunately, the service really let the place down. Two of the younger female servers came across as quite rude and uninterested. They seemed unhappy to help, short with us when we asked simple questions, and generally made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than customers. It definitely affected the atmosphere and our overall experience. On the positive side, one of the other staff members — a tall Hungarian gentleman — was absolutely lovely. Friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. He completely changed the tone of our visit and gave the kind of service you’d hope for in a pub. If the front-of-house service were more consistent, this place would be excellent. Great food, but customer service needs improving.
High expectations but let down on service. One waiter was nice but we found others a bit rude. Slow service when we were eating at 230 and the pub was not busy. The kebab was nice but very minimal pita bread.
We have been going to this pub regularly over the years and always enjoyed our visit. Sadly the standards have dropped and our recent visits will be our last until things improve. The food which was always the highlight is now very bland, overcooked and expensive. The pub and gardens are still lovely with good beer but better food options are offered locally elsewhere.
Came for lunch the other day food was okay nothing special, service was so painfully slow. Wouldn’t be in a rush to return, also seems like the staff does prioritise customers compared to others.
The service from Gemma and Ellie was fantastic! The food was brilliant and first class value for money. Well done Gemma and Ellie! If your manager didn't love you before he certainly will now. David.
Once again, dreadful food but five star service..Which makes it hard to complain. Sunday lunch this weekend vastly overfilled plate of roast beef for my friend, overdone, rubbery and drowned in gravy, I took it home for the dog, and consider putting gravy on the side not everyone wants their plate swimming..The vegetables were decent enough.. As for my Polenta nut roast, absolutely disgusting resembled a brown gellato with a few nuts thrown in for good measure and terrible floppy texture that fell apart like blamange. Who is the vegetarian food developer? You need to do some research! Talk to some real vegetarians and vegans please, I have been a vegetarian for 40 years, you are failing miserably in this sector. The choice of Pollenta or Mushrooms with gnocchi is not a decent choice, many people can't eat (allergies) or dont like mushrooms. So I was stuck with the Polenta nut roast, not a nut roast on any level. Table next to us, way too close for comfort, and the one behind me touching my chair back to back not helped by the lady singing along to the music from the speaker above my friends head, piped music too loud when your sitting under it preventing normal conversation, however a decent playlist.. This is the second time I have written a poor review and we have given it a couple of tries, unfortunately I could not complain on the day as this time as I was a guest..at £92 for 2 Hugely disappointed.
