Life-Changing Sushi Experience at Sushi Badaya Highland Park I have to admit, I was never a fan of sushi actually, I had never even tried it until a friend invited me to Sushi Badaya in Highland Park. Little did I know, this visit would completely change my perspective on sushi and food in general. The quality of the sushi here is beyond extraordinary. I tried eel for the very first time, and to my surprise, it was absolutely incredible! The variety of sushi they offer is unmatched, and every single piece is crafted with care and precision. The chef even prepared a special king crab roll for me, which was so unforgettable it has me planning my next visit already. The freshness of the fish is something I’ve never experienced before it’s on a whole other level. The restaurant itself is impeccably clean and sanitary, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the servers are some of the most attentive and friendly I’ve ever encountered. Sushi Badaya turned me, someone who had spent a lifetime avoiding sushi, into a huge fan in just one visit. This place is nothing short of amazing, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you’re a sushi enthusiast or even a skeptic like I was, this is the spot to visit. Thank you, Sushi Badaya, for opening my eyes to a whole new world of incredible flavors!

I had such a great experience at Sushi Badaya! The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful — you can really taste the quality in every bite. The sushi was beautifully presented, and everything we ordered was delicious. The staff was kind, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. It’s clear they take pride in what they do. Whether you’re a sushi lover or just trying it out for the first time, I highly recommend this place. Can’t wait to come back!

Absolutely fantastic experience at Sushi Badaya. We came in on a Saturday night on the recommendation of friends and were very pleased with our meal. Everything was excellent, from the appetizers to the main course. The service and presentation were superb. Most importantly, the fish was fresh! We'll be coming back for sure!

This sushi bar offered more than just a meal—it was a **carefully curated culinary experience** that highlighted the true essence of exceptional ingredients. Throughout the course, the quality and freshness of the fish were outstanding, with a clear sense of precision in aging, temperature, and balance with the rice. The true standouts were the **tuna collar (kamatoro) and fatty tuna (otoro)**. The kamatoro delivered a deep, savory richness with a beautifully structured texture, while the otoro melted effortlessly, its refined fat spreading gently across the palate without overwhelming it. Both pieces showcased confidence in restraint, allowing the quality of the tuna itself to speak. The **uni** was equally memorable—clean, sweet, and luxuriously creamy, with none of the bitterness or off-notes that often diminish lesser offerings. It left a lasting impression as both a highlight and a graceful finish. Overall, this sushi bar exemplifies **top-tier ingredients, thoughtful execution, and polished hospitality**. For those who truly appreciate sushi as a form of fine dining, this is an experience well worth seeking out.

Truly excellent food and service all around! The waiters and chefs were so kind and friendly and the sushi was amazing. They have an open kitchen and make all the sushi out in front where you can see. We had three types of sushi: moon river, giant crab crunch, and original dragon. My personal favorite was the moon river! Will be coming back again!

This place is the best!! The fish is always super fresh and the service is 10/10. Chef moon is exceptional. I’d make some recommendations but you honestly cannot go wrong here. Still dying to try the omakase! If you’re in the north shore area, look no further! (Indoor and outdoor patio option for seating)

After moving from the city to Highland Park, we were a bit worried how the suburban sushi would compare. Badaya - you have leveled up!! We had take out from here one night which was great. At the time, my husband saw that Badaya has an Omikase!!! This was something we thought we'd never find in the suburbs. It is such a treat for anyone who likes sushi!! For those who haven't had an Omikase meal, it is a prix fix multiple course sushi meal created right in front of you. Chef Moon was outstanding. We loved asking about all the different fish he prepared for us and he was happy to tell us more. The wait staff - incredible. They were extremely attentive and nice. This meal includes some of the best nigiri mixed in with snacks like edamame and lobster soup. It was beautiful and creative. At the end, the chef asked what each of our favorite courses was. Personally I loved this cuttlefish uni combo. My husband loved the salmon. Chef moon made an additional variation of each of those for us to have. So if you want to feel like a sushi VIP, I highly recommend this experience. I'm going back again this week for it with my dad since I want to experience it all again. Looking forward to what Chef prepares for us this time!! Updating 6/14/25: this place continues to be SO GOOD

I've been here multiple times and the food has been consistently good every single time. The chef is very knowledgeable about his fish and has passion which shows up in the artistic display of the food. Great place place to have business meetings as well. Your guests will be impressed.

This is our families go to spot for Sushi and it is absolutely delicious. The service, ambiance, and quality of food is top notch and when Moon (Owner) and Brittney (Server) greet us we feel like family. Make sure if you’re looking for great quality sushi, visit Sushi Badaya, you will not be disappointed I promise.

They have a salad called Mint Salad. It is to die for. So fresh tasting. It is substantial yet is such a bargain at $5. The sushi of course is great too. They have a casual roomy outdoor patio. Open for lunch and dinner.

Made reservations for the sushi bar in advance to celebrate a friend's Birthday, and, WOW! This place absolutely blew me away! Everything from the spooky/festive Halloween decorations that greet you outside, the atmosphere, service, friendliness of the staff, CLEAN bathrooms, generous selections of their imported Japanese Whiskey & Sake, and of course, the freshness and quality in their sushi & maki. The Salmon Sunshine and Toro Toro roll are an absolute MUST from their Signature Maki section, as well as their Toro and Uni Nigiri (YES, THEY HAVE UNI!!). This place was absolutely fantastic, and we will be back to visit Chef Moon & the gang in the future.

Having lived on the north shore most of my life, I can tell you that the title of "best sushi place" changes frequently. This place currently has it though. Great service, very knowledgeable servers, and highly quality food.

So fresh and delicious! Tried it out since I saw it was under new management. I liked the previous menu and owners as well, so I was curious. It was so good! The menu is a bit elevated from the last one and very well executed. We had the sashimi dinner, salmon ceviche and mozz Don katsu. My daughter had the California roll and shrimp tempura roll. For dessert we had the guava gelato with mango sauce…. Yum! Everything was beautiful and tasty. The sashimi was super fresh and chef moon has some interesting touches on his sushi! Worth the try, definitely will be returning.

Badaya has quickly become my favorite sushi restaurant since I've moved to the area. The prices are moderate for the quality of the fish.

My wife and I love this place. Their service is consistently amazing, and everyone is so friendly and nice. We bring our baby daughter in and they go out of their way to make her comfortable and us comfortable. They even bring her little snacks to eat and make her laugh. The sushi rolls, appetizers, daily specials and nigiri are always really good, fresh, and well priced. Probably the best toro you can get in HP area. I’ve tried their dinner entrees before too and they’re also really good! Would definitely recommend.

We LOVE Sushi Badaya! The chefs and the service are amazing! We have actually gotten to know the lovely Brittney...we asked to be seated with her and put ourselves in her hands. We just let her know how hungry we are and if there is anything in particular that we want. Then she brings us the most wonderful creative meal. I ate there with my dad recently, and he said Sushi Baday was the best sushi he had ever had (I agree).

It’s been years since we’ve been here. But when we heard it was under new ownership we thought we’d give it a try. This is not the old Sushi Badaya! The sushi is fresh, creative and delicious. The waitstaff is really great. Brittney, read our group perfectly and kept it fun and made great recommendations. The atmosphere was lively and seemed to be full of happy diners. If you haven’t been in a while. It’s time to head back!

Look no further for Michelin star quality sushi in the suburbs and for a fraction of the cost! I take my husband's birthday very seriously. I love to splurge on his birthday and spoil him, especially with the food. I was originally planning on taking my husband for a day in the city with omakase lunch and dinner at Bavette's. Unfortunately, our dog has been sick so I no longer felt comfortable leaving him home or having someone else watch him for a full day. Thank goodness for Chef Moon and Sushi Badaya for saving the day and creating the most incredibly beautiful and delcious platter of our dreams! About a week before my husband's birthday, I looked frantically for high end sushi tray options and couldn't find anything that fit my taste. I wanted it to look like literal omakase on a sushi platter. I have ordered sushi platters from every spot in the suburbs (so I thought) and I they didn't fit the vision I had for a fancy night in. I saw Sushi Badaya pop up in my searches but for some reason, I had connected it to a Korean restaurant that is no longer open and hasn't been for quite some time, so I just kept ignoring the page. Then, for some reason, the picture on the list of searches changed for Sushi Badaya, showing a beautiful sushi tray. I immediately clicked it, not realizing it was Sushi Badaya. I couldn't believe I had missed this absolute treasure of a restaurant for who knows how many years! I emailed a email address I had found somewhere with an inquiry but hadn't heard back (I think I only waited like a day though) so I called the restaurant. When I referenced the tray, they said they didn't have it so I was confused but said okay and tried to move on and find something else. The next day or maybe two days later I finally found a restaurant downtown that had a sushi box type of offering but it was no where near the beauty of the Sushi Badaya's platters, plus it would have been impossible for me to pick it up and get home with enough time to decorate and pick up the other things for my husband's birthday. I was so frustrated so I looked on the website for Sushi Badaya again and noticed there was a different phone number than I had called, so I called that one. Chef Moon answered the phone and I thought I had called the wrong number at first but quickly realized it was his personal number (what incredible dedication to his customers to share his person number!). I let him know my dilemma and that I really wanted the platter in the picture but was told it was not an option and begged for him to please help me. He let me know that it was indeed an option, but it was not a pre-designed platter, it was custom. I understood then that there had been a miscommunication and wished I had asked more questions instead of giving in so quick the first phone call. He let me know to text him what I was looking for, the price range, and the serving size. I let him know it was for 2 people and that the price range was $200-300. I let him know my husband loves otoro, uni, and salmon (somehow he also knew how much my husband loves fried shrimp heads too!). Chef Moon responded immediately letting me know he would create a tray for $250 and that he would use great fish for us. I was completely enthused and let me say, he did not disappoint! My husband was thrilled with the platter and was shocked when I said I got it from the suburbs. He agreed it looked like the nigiri we had at Michelin star sushi restaurants! I am so incredibly grateful to Chef Moon and the Sushi Badaya team for coming through and making my husband's birthday dinner so delicious and beautiful. I guarantee I will be sending my husband on sushi takeout runs to Sushi Badaya moving forward.

The sushi is absolutely delicious; it’s the best I’ve had outside of the US coasts. The service is fast and friendly, and it has a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. I don’t think I could recommend a restaurant more.

We absolutely loved dining out at this place. Chirashi was fresh with perfect texture, making every bite delightful (salmon melts in your mouth)! Two thumbs up! We would definitely be back again. *** They use freshly prepared wasabi which was an absolute bonus ***

Best quality fish you can get in Highland Park. You can tell that Chef Moon serves his dishes with sincerity and passion, down to the smallest details in all his ingredients. Highlight: He has the freshest and most creamy uni you can get in the Chicagoland area.

“We recently visited this sushi restaurant and were absolutely impressed! The place is incredibly atmospheric and cozy, making it a pleasure to spend time here. The service was outstanding—the staff were very polite and attentive. What truly amazed us was the chef himself coming to our table with a special treat—a dish that wasn’t even on the menu, prepared especially for us. It was not only a delightful surprise but also absolutely delicious! We left extremely satisfied and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who values excellent cuisine and top-notch service. We will definitely be coming back!”

Very pleasant experience over all. Fresh ingredients, great service and clean restrooms (important for me). They have norlt only regular sushi/sashimi menu that I can see at other sushi restaurants but also chef Moon's creative specialties. We tried both kinds, and they pleased everyone's palate including 10 year old's. Also, my boy dropped chopsticks couple times and the lady brough new ones even before we asked. Will definitely visit again!

I had an amazing experience at sushi badaya ! Every single dish was absolutely delicious and fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. The quality of the fish was outstanding, and the presentation made each plate feel special. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. If you’re looking for incredible sushi and a great dining experience, this place is a must-visit. I can’t wait to come back! 🍣💛

Delicious food with a wide variety. Portions are generous and filling. Service was a little slow to come to us, but incredibly attentive and fast, especially for a larger group of people. Atmosphere is a standard suburban strip mall setting - which is clean and spacious with cute accents and decor. Will absolutely be returning

Like Digital Underground, been all around the world but keep coming back to Sushi Badaya. Chef Moon is always there and always on point. You could go downtown spend double the money and get half the food and half the taste. Sushi Badaya always has great food and the staff is never off their game. Ordering off the menu at Sushi Badaya is like ordering omakase at another restaurant. It's always right, it's always perfect. Chef Moon ensures you'll have a great meal. Don't take my word for it, give it a try, even takeout, always fantastic.

Sushi Badaya has new management so that meant a new menu. I checked it out and the food here is so much better than before. I like the touches on the nigiri, and truly resembles some cool stuff! Service is okay.

First time eating at this sushi place and was pleasantly surprised! Good service, the server made excellent recommendations based on what type of sushi we told them we liked. Decent price and nice location.

A

I was surprised that the nigiri was price so high for one piece. I have almost Also gotten two pieces for around the same price. the sushi was decent for being in the Midwest. The rolls that I had gotten was oddly sitting in truffle oil & soy. It made the bottom very mushy. My service was excellent, I was one of the only people in there though. The sushi chef also made a piece on the house for me to try. Overall, I found it to be too pricy for the product served. For the region though, decent, and would dine again. 4/5.

My cocktail was tasteless, I ordered sex on the beach and it was not good. Sushi was Ok but my husband ordered their Cod for dinner ano it was not seasoned and very bland. The service was good our server was really nice and friendly. But I don’t think we will go here again. Not worth the money.

Was disappointed with my most recent experience at Sushi Badaya. I’ve been many times before, but this was my first time dining in since the new ownership. Below are some pics I took to give a better visual of what I experienced. 1. Ordered a sweet potato roll that unexpectedly had a 1:10 ratio of sweet potato to avocado + cucumber. Since when does a sweet potato roll include anything else other than sweet potato? If this is their version of a sweet potato roll then they need to specify the additional ingredients it includes on the menu. Totally misleading. 2. Ordered a yellowtail scallion hand roll with the driest scallions I’ve ever seen in my life. If I wanted just a plain yellowtail hand roll then I would have just ordered that. The whole point of having scallions is to give another dimension of flavor to the roll which I completely missed out on because due to how dry/not fresh they were, the scallions didn’t deliver any flavor. The quality of fish was good, but I wish that was consistent with everything else. 3. Ordered crispy rice with spicy tuna, except we requested a modification to sub the tuna for yellowtail instead. Waiter said she would ask, and came back saying they could do it but there will be a $3 up charge. That was fine with us…until it arrived like this. We were expecting it to be the same consistency as the original spicy tuna but it wasn’t at all. As you can see it’s just cubed up yellowtail rather than the usual whipped/tartar/paste type of texture. The presentation just seemed lousy, and to top it all off there was a mystery string/hair of some sort. Overall, I think that this spot is good when it comes to the quality fish, but unless you’re ordering nigiri/sashimi, then everything else is hit or miss. Consistency throughout the menu is lacking, and for that reason I will not be returning anytime soon.

Very bizarre experience…food was pretty good, but the vibe is just so weird. Were recommended here by local friends and arrived to an almost empty restaurant on a Friday night. Were told immediately: -No servers. (All orders had to be taken at hostess counter) -No glasses of water, wine, sake, or beer (forced to buy very expensive bottles) -All food to be served in take out containers (but you could eat inside) -No cocktails. Portions were incredibly small, but tasty. Would try again if they were more of a normal restaurant, until then would pass for other options.

Slow, 40 minutes 1 other family. 3 chefs. Noone sitting inside. A completely detached rude owner who cannot allow a critique. Threatens to "call police", then "don't come back", "we don't need people like you here".... he literally cannot contain himself when he is wrong or a 6' "3 200lb construction employee comes in there and expresses the shortcoming. He had to come pursue and posture for the family sitting there. Inserted off inside where i made the complaint to begin with... it's only proper. I feel bad for his employees if he's a bully to his customers.
