Opinions de Paine's Hollister
The “go-to” family friendly restaurant in Hollister with classic meals, full bar and outstanding staff.
I'd never been here before or heard of it. But it really impressed me. First the service was excellent with remembering our drinks and what we ordered. My father in law said he orders Arnold Palmers and typically servers refill it with ice tea. Not here. They remembered and he was impressed by that. Besides the service, the food was tasty and very fresh. The price was also excellent for the quality of food and service. Also it got very busy as the night went on. I can see why. If I were in town again, I definitely would come here again.
Great experience..dinner like always is amazing..been going here for 10 plus years..never disappoints
Best dinner ever! Love their chicken piccata and their daily specials! Friendly staff and quick service!
Nice menu. Daily specials. Staff is friendly. Food is great for lunch and dinner. Table for two or a banquet. One of our favorite places in Hollister.
We Always Love their Food, & Their Service!! Celebrated Mother Day Dinner, The day Before Mother's Day, it Was Amazing!!
We had an excellent family dinner. The service was superb. The food was good and the menu was priced well. I got a Paine's steak, rice and perfectly cooked vegetables.
Yummy. Great burgers. I have tryed the pasta and other entries. Everything I have tried has been really good. Good service.
Love the food and service!!! My favorite restaurant! This time we had the Paines Steak it was great. See video with my handsome hubby date 🥰 great night, as always. Server's are so nice and made it even better.

The service was great and the food good. I had the salmon salad (minus the salmon. Vegetarian) it was very tasty. I had the salmon in a to go container and the person who ate it reported it was very good.
My grandson Jeremiah and I went in for dinner and we both enjoyed our visit and great food. The service was truly special. Thanks Paine's for a great experience.
Great food. Many choices including pasta, fish, steak. Attended a birthday party recently in the back room of the restaurant. Food was great buffet style too!
Great place for lunch or dinner. The service team is outstanding and always their to help with your needs. We had a hamburger and hot pastrami sandwich.
Mike H. was a fabulous server and that alone was why Paine's deserved 5 stars. Food was really good as well. Recommend the Saganaki as an appetizer.
Had a steak sandwich for lunch that was to die for (compliments to the chef). Probably the best steak sandwich I've ever had. Service was great. Thank you to our waitress Mary.
Great restaurant, service impeccable, food is out of this world, prepared with care and professionalism. Menu is high class status and staff is very friendly and professional.
Fave place for over 20 years!
My Grandpa, Mr. Yuste, always goes here. Went with him the other day. Great service and catered to my recent gastric bypass. They will go the extra mile.
We went for seafood, but ended up with the most delicious eggplant parmesan. By the standard they set for this meal, I have no doubt their entire menu is: perfecto!
Great diner for all occasions with a wide variety of choices for all palets. Best tamato basil soup in town, daily specials and steak/seafood combos!
Happy Birthday to me! They have great food and the best lemon drop martini in the world! Love Paine's!
Lovely restaurant. Out waitress was excellent and attentive. Dinner was very good and decent portions . Definitely will return.
Great atmosphere, amazing service. We had our anniversary dinner there and they were very attentive
Great service and delicious food
Good food and service, long wait for food to arrive.
Great restaurant, our family has been going for over 40 years. We recently celebrated our grandmother's memorial there, the back was setup with catering and it was a great venue. The food is always amazing at Paine's.
I've lived in Hollister for 4 years and tonight was the first time I've eaten at Paine's... It will DEFINITELY not be my last!! The service was completely outstanding!! Our server was Ellen, and I have to say she was above and beyond any server anywhere! She was attentive without being obtrusive. She was fun and had the best personality ❤️ And the food? Just WOW!! I had the Beef Ravioli and my amazing husband enjoyed the Prime Rib. We were so glad we went and as I said, we will be going back!! Thanks for the awesome experience!!! 👍👍
Good old fashioned Italian restaurant. Loved the angel hair pasta.
I have lived in hollister my whole life and had never ate here. Wow was I missing out. This is my favorite place for date night now. I wanted a good steak and I got exactly that. It was great fast and friendly service. The clam chowder was the best I ever had😍🤤
Love this place. John and his Entire staff have been the Best of the Best in Fine dining food service!! Please support your local business, being born and raised here in San Benito County, this family owned business is ONE of a Kind....Good Food. Good Friends..Just a GOOD old Time... Enjoy!!!
Paine's a nice treat! In over twenty years I have yet to have anything short of delicious from their menu. The service is friendly, attentive, and very courteous. Linen table cloth, linen napkins, bread and butter brought to the table before a meal, and the choice of booth or chair seating. The building is getting a bit old, so the bathrooms (on the other side of the building near the bar area) are not fancy and could use some updating. Bar area is separate from dining area, and there is a private room off the main dining area as well as a banquet room on the back side of the building for larger events. Oh, and if you enjoy cheese, be sure to order the Saganaki appetizer! It comes with a show!
The food was delicious and our waiteess did a great job of anticipating our needs. We were using a gift cards to pay, and the staff was understanding when we had to go get cash for a tip and come back. I'm so glad they've survived Newsome's reign of terror. My hat's off to you guys at Paines!
Delicious food. Amazing service and wonderful people. El Diablo drink was amazing. I definitely want to return.
Traditional dinner house with a large patio, friendly staff. They have a delicious menu and a superb kitchen staff. They also feature a full bar. A great place for high quality lunches and dinners. Excellent Restaurant
We truly enjoy Paines! Elaine and staff always makes our visit enjoyable. To top it off, the food is excellent! Chicken Marsala is the best I've Ever had!!
Mary was such an awesome waitress, very friendly, funny, and attentive. Service was great. Food was satisfactory, drinks were good. Definitely be back again.
The food at Paine's is really good. Main courses i have ate are all good. Chicken Tortilla soup is really good. I could say that i am nourished by Paine's restaurant.
We really enjoy coming here. It’s become our go to when we go out which is rare. The atmosphere is kid friendly but also a nice place for a special occasion. The food is good and consistent. We’ve had everything from steak to lamb to a variety of the pastas. The desserts are super tasty too. The drinks aren’t weak. Highly recommend!!!
Food was excellent! Service was great!! Had great time for my 70th birthday 🎉!
Excellent food. Great service.
Food is amazing. Very delicious and drinks are well made. It does feel outdated, like stepping into an 80s wedding hall. Recommend for great food, but don’t expect to enjoy the atmosphere.
The food was absolutely outstanding, from the mouthwatering appetizers to the delectable main courses. The culinary expertise truly shone through in every dish. But what truly sets Paine's apart is their exceptional staff. The service was impeccable, and the staff members were incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. They went above and beyond to make our dining experience memorable. Overall, I can't recommend Paine's restaurant enough. It's a true gem in Hollister, and it's the combination of incredible food and a fantastic team that makes it deserving of a solid 5-star rating.
The Food was Delicious, staff was friendly and our waitress Roxanne was very attentive. Service was Great and everyone enjoyed their meal.
This is one of the best restaurants in Hollister. The food is always good. Bring your friends and enjoy an evening out before strolling downtown under the lights.
Pains has delicious food, a great staff, a fully stocked bar, and the gathering room in the back for special functions. A place for the whole family.
You blink and you miss it. It’s unassuming, but the food and drinks are not. Service was excellent. It’s one of those old school spots. But to me, “old school” means they know what is important, flavor and good service. The mixed drinks were worth the money. Try the “Apricot Orchard” and don’t miss, “El Diablo”.
I went to attend a breakfast benefit and everything was really good! The food was cooked thoroughly and flavorful.
5⭐️ service from booking to service on the day for a 35 person memorial luncheon after a funeral. Kimber was so patient and accommodating when we changed our minds, the date, and the buffet menu multiple times! For appetizers we chose from their catering menu: Deep fried panko crusted Calamari so good! What a hit everyone loved even the kids! And the hand breaded artichoke hearts were especially tasty. For entee we chose Menu 2 Classic Country BBQ: We selected the roasted chicken & dry rubbed tri-tip combo. Sides were corn on cob, slow cooked chili beans with an impressive mixed vegetables salad coffee & tea provided as well. Plenty of warm bread and butter as well.Table set ups done beautifully and the food was worth waiting for. (We got there early) Highly recommended for parties, luncheons & dinners for large parties!
Just had dinner at paines as always the food was phenomenal! We had a great experience with our sever Celine. She made sure we were always taken care of. We will definitely be coming back!
We had the fried mushrooms (AWESOME), and the party melt (very good)! Went at lunch, sat on the bar side, our service was excellent and if we weren't passing through, we'd be regulars. The other menu items looked yummy and be sure to check out their daily specials.
Great place to host events. Had my birthday party in the banquet area and a work team building seminar in the restaurant area. Food is fresh and service is great. I had salmon and vegetables on one occasion and potatoes and fruit salad on another. I'm a particular eater, and Paine's kept me a happy lady.
Our waitress was wonderful. Very nice staff, didn't wait to be seated even if we didn't have a reservation. Food was delicious and served in a timely manner. We were offered soup or salad, amd dessert. Great experience
Great venue. Great staff.... Food was delicious.. . Courteous staff... Great Bartenders...
On this day, it was my son's seventeenth birthday. . We had a wonderful experience. All the food was excellent. The calamari was so fresh and I was really impressed with the fried artichokes...
This is a Hollister classic! I’ve been to events where they cater and they’re great! I come here every now & then for lunch and when I do, I keep telling myself I should go more often. Friendly staff and great food!
I had the NY steak, was amazing presentation, great taste, it was more well done than medium rare but I still enjoyed it. Lovely place, I'll try the steak one more time.
Astounding menu for variety and great taste. Don't miss of you are nearby. Worth detour off the road to Sacramento from Central California.
Paine's went above and beyond for my wedding reception at a residential location. They responded promptly and professionally to my emails and all the questions I had. Their two servers, Monica and Natalia were excellent. The food was amazing. Everybody loved the calamari and tri-tip most. I would highly recommend for dining in or catering for any events.

We made reservations and when we arrived we were seated immediately. This restaurant has a dining side and a bar side. It seems as though they also cater to large groups, which does make the noise level much louder. As we were leaving music in a back room began blasting. Our server was attentive. Bread is served to each table. Dinner was very delicious. I ordered cheese ravioli and asked for 2 meatballs to be added. Meatballs are $3 each and they. are. HUGE!!! My husband ordered filet mignon with a port reduction sauce. He said that it mostly tastes like beef gravy. The banana fosters was large and tasty.
Great place to go when you want something more than a burger or pizza, but not to fancy either. Good service and good food. Decent selection of local wines. The chicken piccata was awesome! The calamari steak was pretty darn good too.

Their specials we're yummy, their regular menu didn't thrill me. The food was yummy with great service and their brownie sundae was the best part!
Great food. Went for pre thanksgiving. Also is has a bar area. They are kid friendly as well. Servers were great.
Great place. clean. Food is good, great little bar ! Little hometown atmosphere. Bartenders and servers very polite. Owner john is a great guy.
Food was liked by all. Service was very slow. Wait staff took 30+ minutes to unscramble bills. We will pass next time...
First time there for dinner, food was quite tasty and service especially good. Kimber attended to us like we were lifelong friends. Will go back soon.
Good food, consistently prepared and resonably priced. They have a decent wine selection and don't hesitate on allowing substitutions on the menu. They also have a spacious bar that is seperate to the dining room but will serve food in there as well.
Went to lunch with my friends and it was superb. All of our orders were fresh, hot and tasty. Our waitress was very nice and very accommodating. I will go back and enjoy a meal there again
We enjoyed our meals. 4 of us, 1 had Spaghetti, 2 had steaks and 1 Cobb salad. Awesome service. Friendly and really nice people.
This place is off the hook. Great Italian food at at good price. We have been there twice in a month and we plan on making it a regular event.
Paine's is a dining favorite. The food is fresh and the service is top notch. They have two rooms for larger gatherings. One seats about 20 people and the hall seats about 150. The lighting in the hall is pretty dim and could use updating.
I would put this under "Old School American family-friendly establishment." It's no easy feat when a restaurant does what it does well, is consistent to the brand and has a following over the years. My medium rare steak was cooked medium rare. The vegetables, mashed potatoes and soup I had were all cooked and seasoned well for this kind of cuisine. Some of the best service you can get in Hollister -- although, one server I interacted with had a blank face and these huge saucer eyes that didn't change when I thanked her -- the affect was concerning, I hope she is doing ok / isn't being mistreated -- maybe that was just her face -- it's hard to know? The ambiance was quiet, calm, dark and not crowded in the least -- I would say the overall energy in the place was neutral to positive. While it's not my personal favorite cuisine, nor a place I'd go out of my way to visit typically, since I prefer fresher types of food, I respect it. If this is what you like, go right on ahead.
The service was outstanding. The lady that was our server was very nice and always around and kept my water filled. The food was ok. If this place was less expensive I might go back but for the price the food is super bland. I got the the new york strip, although it was cooked medium rare as I requested it had absolutely no seasoning at all. No salt no pepper nothing. The garlic mash led potatoes seemed almost like they were out of a box. The vegetables were cooked well but just weren't good either. The only seasoning I could taste was the garlic in the potatoes but I didn't enjoy them either. My girlfriend got the ravioli with red sauce it was ok but also bland but more enjoyable than the steak. I was very disappointed since we thought the place was very nice and since we were spending a lot of money we expected more from the food. The bread and butter was definitely the highlight of the meal. We also had the charcuterie board which they are getting rid of which was ok the roast beef and cheese and crackers were good but didn't care for the other meat or jam they had. Plus the garnish they but on there overpowered the taste of eveything that is touched with ruined 1/3 of the stuff on the board. The candied nut were delicious. We also had the creme brulee which was also delicious. The service really made the whole thing nice but definitely would not pay that much for the food. I had a much better steak at the pub for half the price.
We had a 6:00 reservation for 3. We were able to be seated at about 6:12 p.m. We ordered Coca-Cola to drink and received those quickly. Our waitress came by soon thereafter but we were not quite ready to order our meals because we were talking. She said she would be back, but no one came back for over 20 minutes to take our food order. That was the only glitch. I had the filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare, but it came a slight bit more medium, no blood. The taste was okay, it was wrapped in a nice slice of bacon, but that was really the only other flavor. But it was super tender. Came with garlic mashed potatoes, which were slightly drier than I'm used to. The vegetables were fantastic! Each of my adult children ordered a chicken dish, and they both loved it. Each dish had a different sauce. One was chicken piccata with capers and the other was called Chicken Jerusalem. They both enjoyed it. We had the creme brulee for dessert, also delicious. Overall good experience but next time we'll be ready with our food order haha. With a 6:00 reservation, we didn't eat until almost 7:15.
One of the best Fettuccine pasta smothered in Alfredo white cream sauce I think I have had. I got mine to go, had it for dinner with some tomatoes and chicken mixed in and it made a great dinner. I can highly recommend the Alfredo with white sauce.

A bit pricey but good food. Update 3/4/22: It seems like the quality of the food and the experience hasn't been as good recently. The prices are still a bit high for the quality of food in my opinion. On this latest visit celebrating our daughter's college graduation, we ordered a couple of appetizers: the Saganaki and the Breaded Calamari. The Saganaki is really tasty and rich - it is a baked Greek cheese w/butter served flaming at table-side. The Breaded Calamari comes as sticks with dipping sauce and those were pretty tasty as well. My wife ordered the bacon-wrapped pork loin but wasn't happy with it - she said it was dry and tough. I ordered the cut of New York, but the steak was just ok; I must have received an end cut because the steak had a flap of gristle through the entire steak. For the price of these main courses, we expected better quality food. My son ordered the Bananas Foster as he joined us late. He said it was good. Here's hoping this latest experience isn't indicative of the restaurant's trajectory. We may give it one more try in the future. Again, for the price, the food should be impeccable.

Paines used to be a treat for us, but we haven't been there in a long time. Recently, we ate at a buffet style meal there and it was very bland! We were very disappointed and didn't finish our food.
Was not like I remember it when my wife and I lived here. Service was not that good and they were not that busy. Seafood Fettuccini was okay but the calamari was good.
It was ok, well drinks and domestic beer are priced competitively, wine is a little costly in my opinion. For appetizers we had the bruschetta, which was fabulous, nicely crisped baguette bread with lots of garlic and super fresh tomatoes, the calamari was different and comes formed like a fish stick, I expected rings and tentacles so it was a bit of a surprise, but it was tasty. 2 in the group had shrimp pasta and thought it was excellent, one had a New York steak and thought it was good, although maybe a little too crusted. I had the veal and was a little disappointed in that it was over cooked. Veal in a marsala is thin and needs to be pink to keep it from getting tough, so don't leave it in pan for so long, remember it will continue to cook after removing from the heat.
Cheeseburger rare was delicious. Luke-warm soup, asked for hot soup. Returned the same luke temp. No iced tea refill. A disgruntled and fake-friendly waitress.
The restaurant on a Wednesday evening was very empty, the booths were comfy, and the steak was perfect. Unfortunately, the 60 dollar lobster tail was over cooked and way over priced. I enjoyed the atmosphere it reminded me of just stepping outside on the outskirts of Hollister. The bathrooms were clean, the service was nice, but I probably wouldn’t ever go again. I don’t recommend, though you can find out for yourself.
Food very tasty and we'll prepared. Service quite slow in receiving meal, not the fault of the server. Ambiance neat, clean, well decorated. All in all, way too pricey considering small town clientele and detractors listed above. We felt the special Valentine's Day menu pricing took unjustified advantage of the occasion - great way to drive Hollister locals to other larger venues if we are going to spend that kind of money.
Your chicken Marsala lacks some flavor all around it's correct yet still missing that mark by a foot , the potatoes are instant mash ? Flavor is water flavored for sure no butter salt cream garlic confit. Plus side the plate looked beautiful absolutely nailed it the chicken was pounded until it was as thin as my mushrooms but over all plating and handling of the food was wonderful. I plan to try this place again at some point probably not the Marsala, due to what I've eaten. it for sure has great potential to be a fantastic place to eat . I got to say the servers are amazingly fast paced and on their toes. A nice lady served me with gusto and made sure my glass stayed filled , and whilist eating her and another young man handled a massive party alone with just as much enthusiasm and grace. You have fantastic workers who are putting in the correct effort, just maybe a little garlic confit and cream in the mash would go a long way and black pepper if you do that it'd bring balance to what your Marsala lacks in its total flavor . You don't have to take my advice but it's here anyways regardless overall review personally a great place to eat could be better but not bad for the price and atmosphere+ good service which personally traveling cross country that can be hard to come by occasionally .

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I was very unimpressed. First off the hostess ignored us for a good while when we first walked in. Other groups came in and were ignored as well so at least I didn't feel it was personal. Once we were seated it took a very long time for our food to come out and we couldn't get our waitress to fill our drinks in the meantime which was frustrating. We finally asked a different server and did get our drinks filled. Finally our food came and while it wasn't horrible it was just kinda bland. I got a rib eye and it reminded me of the steaks at applebees or flames. Not a big steakhouse. I was really bummed because I had high Hope's for this place but We wont be back.
Cute place but food was tasteless and not good. Both my husband and I had flavorless and watered down dishes. We were excited to try this place, but we won’t be back. Disappointed because Italian is my favorite food.
Paine's is a wonderful place to eat and a server by the name of Kim is the best server in the establishment she values us as customers.I would love to have her join in our business . She seems to really enjoy her job and she gave us everything we could want , I will say I seen her go that extra mile that most restraunt s won't.
Not good. Two in our party sent their food back after the first bite. Fish platter was basically tasteless. Vegetables were not cooked. They seemed to think that "comping" the two meals was a generous thing. They did not order anything to replace the meals. Very expensive. Not a fan. Will not return.
Overall service was good. Food not so much. Always order chicken marsala and is always excellent. Now not so much. No taste . Taste like chicken with brown gravy. Why would you change a good thing. John and Bobby , we miss you.❤️
Took about 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge my existence. Ordered the ribs, tasted like rubbery leather. For an upscale restaurant they used foil wrapped butter. This place is bad.
First time there, the food was so disgusting and tasteless. The waiter, Johanna, was so rude, condescending, kept pushing my arm when she set something down instead of saying excuse me. Kept rushing my family and I to eat and leave. Will never come back.
We've been here twice as our first experience wasn't all that, so we decided to give this place another shot. Being local to Hollister, we feel it was important to give local establishments as much support as possible. Unfortunately, that's where it ends for us The soup was cold and the main entrees lacked any flavor. It's unfortunate as we really wanted to support this place.
Went for dinner to celebrate my mother's retirement. Food was flavorless and overpriced. Good service from waitress but bad service from hostess before her. Wouldn't recommend unless you like paying through the nose for food that resembles that of a cheap diner.
If you’re looking for an experience that combines the thrill of disappointment with the joy of overpaying, Paine’s Restaurant is the place to be. Let’s start with the Caesar salad, which had the dressing equivalent of what I imagine a ghost of Caesar himself would leave behind if he was only vaguely interested in the concept of a salad. I mean, barely a whisper of dressing. As for the sauces and gravy, they were less “flavorful” and more “please call a doctor,” because they were basically salt with a hint of something that might’ve once been food. Now, let’s talk about the frozen lobster tail that came at the market price of $60. I’ve seen more excitement in the frozen food aisle at your local grocery store. “Disgusting” is the kindest thing I can say about it – if there were a Yelp rating for “lobster that makes you question your life choices,” this would get a solid 1 star. Props to our waitress, who was so kind and apologetic after seeing my wife’s plate with more food left on it than a toddler’s dinner after a tantrum. The poor woman could clearly tell we were questioning everything we thought we knew about dining. Paine’s is out here charging Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse prices for what can only be described as a Gordans Fisherman meal. And while I get that “casual elegance” is the vibe they’re going for, dining in khaki shorts and flip-flops doesn’t exactly scream fine dining. If you’re looking for a true “4.5-star experience,” you may want to reconsider wearing your vacation wear here. Honestly, this place is a solid 3 on its best day. And that’s being generous. Do yourself a favor: save your money, skip the disappointment, and the Paine’s find a place where the lobster at least doesn’t haunt your dreams.
