This place was immaculate. The 2 Bone Pork Chop was the absolute star of the show at the dinner. This restaurant, is something extraordinary, and The history behind it brings you a since of life. I live in Alvin, Tx but this place is well worth the 3 hour drive. They are truly the compation to Perry's Steakhouse. ( with this review is the 16oz Ribeye (medium rare) with the Crab Oscar.) Truly a great steak.
Authentic Texas Steakhouse. Historic and Modern ambience simultaneously. I expected to pay about twice as much for the experience. Pleasantly surprised. ASK YOUR SERVER about your steak options❣The staff is WELL KNOWLEDGED about MANY OPTIONS. All cuts are available from rare to burnt.I recommend doing both on the cut you choose. Tell your server you want it cooked "BLACK AND BLUE(maybe red?)"❣You get your steak served SINGED on the outside and RARE in the Middle❣❣❣👍
My boyfriend and I wanted an elegant place to enjoy our date night and this was it! Unfortunately we didnt get to experience the "old" menu. They released the new menu yesterday. Trey was a great server as well! Recommendations: Fried Goat Cheese Appitizer, Bacon Mac & Gouda and ofcourse any of their steaks!! Will be back.
Amazing food and service. I sat on the patio out front and it was quite nice and peaceful. I tried the lamb shank and it was cooked just right and delicious. Everything here was top notch from the appetizer thru dessert. Will definitely be returning. And LOVE the Texas flag flying out front.
We drove up for Father's day looking for a unique place to go. We had heard a lot of good things about the place and it sure didn't disappoint. The food was exceptional. The price was very good and it was well worth the ride from Kingwood. We will be back and won't wait for another holiday.
Best food and service within 100 miles. We began with a drink at the bar, a hidden gem upstairs, and stayed at the bar and enjoyed dinner. Our bartender, Lane, was exceptionally well versed in his knowledge and his creation of spirits. Even The team who greeted at the door or pleasant and made a point to secure satisfaction for their guests. We will be back to this charming restaurant inside a beautiful 1800s home even though we live over an hour away.
This place is fantastic. I sat at the bar. Clearly a wine list written by a somm, many different varietals I would not expect to find in Huntsville. I personally ordered the prime filet Oscar, cooked perfectly rare, a steal at $30. The nebbiolo was great and the bartenders knew to decant for awhile without me telling them. Martinis are more than fairly priced at $8 to $10 for premium liquors. This place has a fantastic selection for very reasonable prices. Will be back the next time I'm staying here.
Came back in 2022 to see if it was still as excellent as the other couple times we visited. I think it's even better than our previous visits. We absolutely love this place. It's our go-to for special occasions. The atmosphere, the staff, and, most importantly, the food, are all phenomenal.
Tonight was the first time coming here. Unfortunately, I was alone and not with my wife. However Abigail my waitress was a great host and delivered my meal perfectly and made sure I was taken care of. To the cooks, awesome job on the steak. It was definitely cooked as I wanted it. Ill be asking for Abigail next time I come here.
A truly fantastic experience for a steakhouse. It had a warm Texan atmosphere complete with decor. However the real draw here is, of course, the steak. I had a medium rare ribeye, seared beautifully and utterly tender with a none to overwhelming seasoning. The accompanying bacon mac n' cheese was flavorful and obviously made with 100% real cheese from scratch. No corners cut here, including the bacon which was itself a standout. No pasta dish is complete without nearly perfect al dente noodles. While a little soft for my liking they were not at all mushy or bloated. The finishing piece to this wonderful meal was the three layer chocolate cake. I won't spoil it for you; trust me when I say it was simply divine.
God bless the broken road that led me straight to you. Dinner was amazing. The porterhouse steak was delicious. We sat at the upstairs dining area. It was a nice, relaxed atmosphere. We had an awesome waiter named Zach. Thank y’all for a wonderful evening. They were out of Mezcal, but everything else was excellent.
Wonderful experience. Our waiter was incredible and very attentive. We were extremely impressed by him. Wish I could remember his name but he was a tall blonde young guy. The food was wonderful. A tad bit pricey but definitely delicious. The poblano soup was awesome. Chicken fried steak at tiny bit chewy but very tasty and very large portions.
The restaurant is absolutely charming! It's located inside on old house. They sat me upstairs in what they call 'The Attic'. The atmosphere was warm and inviting...I felt like I was stepping back in time. My server's name was Gilbert. He was AMAZING! He was attentive, polite and easy to talk to. Before bringing me water or bread, he asked first if I would like them. I appreciate that because I hate to be wasteful (I am currently not eating bread and sometimes I don't want the water). He made sure to answer all of my questions. My food came out very quickly and was delicious! I had the Tequila Lime Grilled Shrimp, Asparagus and Broccoli. Before bringing my check, Gilbert offered me an iced tea to go (another point for him). I am traveling for work and it's nice to have something different to drink at the hotel. When I told him I was traveling, he asked me where I was from and we chatted for a moment. It's nice to have that human connection when you feel so far from home. Overall 5 stars for 1836 Steakhouse and 5 stars for you Gilbert! Thank you!!
The best steak I've ever eaten. Tender, Juicy and the grill marke were slightly burned that gave the steak this amazing taste and very flavorful. Did I mention the steaks are huge. The staff is very pleasant and the place is very clean. I even got a reservation on Christmas Eve and they were very busy. Thank you for making my birthday a great one. Will definitely be back soon.
Always enjoyable, food is consistently good and service is better than most places. The tenderloin filet is excellent, and I appreciate the fact that they don't force me to choose between medium-rare and rare (I order mine "medium rare plus" and it's exactly what I want). I ordered grilled asparagus for a side and it was well seasoned and perfectly done. Blackberry mojito isn't listed on the bar menu anymore, but it's my absolutely favorite drink when I visit and they were happy to make one for me anyway.
We have made a Fathers day tradition of visiting. We love this place. This time we got to sit in the second floor and it was a real treat where as you could see the original parts of the building making it all that much more charming. I cannot say enough good things about the food and the vibe of this place
Saw a billboard in Conroe Texas and decided to drive to Huntsville TX and check it out. Upon arrival we learned that a reservation would have been required, but the hostess was able to get us seated. Atmosphere is nice and relaxing. Dim lighting and nice back ground music. Ordered fried green tomatoes to start and those alone are worth the trip! Ordered a Bacon and blue cheese burger and good Lord! Every bite was amazing!! Waiter was exceptional and my glass was always full. Definitely not a kiddie place. So if you want to take your special one out for a relaxing evening and actually enjoy your dinner then 1836 is your place. My wife and I will definitely make a return trip. Thank you!
This was the most pleasant, unreal, of the charts experience! What can I say; it was the most " When Harry met Sally " moment in over 30 years! David, our waiter was above the board exceptional in service hand his humor was the cat's meow! The filet was so delicious and tender; I didn't need a steak knife! Every morsel I ate, was a party in my mouth! For desert I asked for something that wasn't on the menu - no problem! It appeared like magic. Now the ambiance; like visiting a frends home. It was quiet, comforting and interesting due to the historical pieces all around. Lighting was perfect; not too bright; yet perfect for even us ladies to look good! Two of us had top of the line steaks, appetizer, desert and coffee for about $100 which for the quality and the whole experience was well worth it. In my opinion, it was not expensive. I will return every time I'm here from Houston. Meow
We celebrated our 20th anniversary here tonight and we couldn't be happier with our choice. The house is beautiful, and it was a wedding present to it's original owners. How fitting!! From our waiter Gilbert, to the quiet and warm atmosphere to the food, all was on point and absolutely amazing! Definitely a go to for a romantic celebration or a family gathering.
Truly an incredible experience. I came here based on some recommendations from a few friends of mine and it’s safe to say I will definitely be back with my wife and family. Quite the unique experience for starters. Was asked if I wanted to sit upstairs or on the regular dining area and as it seemed the regular area would get me seated faster I went with that. Sat by a window with a nice view, and from there I ordered the New York Strip with mashed potatoes along with a Caesar Salad. Gilbert was my server and he truly was helpful even with the few hiccups we encountered. Didn’t have change for a $100 dollar bill later in the evening and the steak I had was slightly undercooked but he helped correct all those small anomalies, and I had a truly pleasurable experience. Definitely recommend this spot for the food and experience. Nothing else like it I’ve been to in my life and will be back soon.
Words cannot amount to how wonderful this establishment is. The food is warm and hot with unique tastes. The iced tea was my favorite but I must celebrate the steaks and the fish. The butter is creamy and delicious with the breads. Denni Jo (Manager) and Savanah were fantastic showing me around the historic structure. Most beloved were the paintings. A sense of Texas pride and history billows over the entire place as you eat but the feeling is one that elicits joy in being part of the State of Texas. I recommend this place with all of my heart. Travel a bit beyond the northern Houston city limits, take the 11th street exit in Huntsville and make a right into the parking lot. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Do you want some excellent fine dining experience and are not rushed for time and not worried about the expense? Then you truly need to make reservations at this restaurant! The food is excellent from start to finish! Both times we have come here the service has been prompt, the waiters helpful, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is wonderful as well. Truly a great restaurant. We had the rack of lamb and dessert - a must have for me!
We enjoyed a delicious dinner. The Spinach Artichoke dip was full of flavor. The House salad was exactly what I dreamed it would be. The Republic Steak was cooked perfectly. I added the Compound butter and loved the robust flavor. My husband had the Chicken fried Steak and the Caesar salad. Our waitress was very kind and attentive at the right times. We enjoyed the whole experience.
Stopped in Huntsville while traveling. We went in about 40 minutes before closing. We had server Gibby (not sure if this is how you spell his name.) He was an amazing server. Great personality and very welcoming. Was very prompt on taking our order and keeping our drinks full. Got some of the most amazing food I have ever ate. And the desert was delicious. Highly recommend this place if you’re in town.
We celebrated our wedding anniversaries. It was so much fun and the steak was delicious! Everything was and the service was outstanding! We ate upstairs and the mood/atmosphere was perfect! Will definitely be back and definitely recommend it as a must do!
Great atmosphere! The spinach dip is a must and the steak was cooked perfectly.
This place is great, never had a steak from a steak house cooked just like I wanted, definitely going back.
I really enjoyed the rich tasting burger. I was not too pleased with the blackened fish, I knew it would be salty and it was too salty for me. The salmon was delicious and I will go back for a few steaks this week. I enjoy the set up of the house. The food was very tasty and decently priced. Worth a spin.
Love this place. Had a nice romantic celebration dinner. Food was delicious. Service by Madison was great - she made it a very memorable experience. We had a nice quiet booth. It looked like some areas of the restaurant could be noisy. We will be back.
Our server was amazing. We came to celebrate a friend's bday and all went well. He didn't have to, but he joined to sing her happy bday. Food was great.
Had dinner while traveling with a colleague last week. Not too many of the chains were appealing locally so we gave it a try. Well, we were blown away by the solid service, great food and reasonable prices. Our steaks were cooked to order and tender. Our server, Faith, was attentive and efficient. May never pass through here ever again, but we had a memorable meal.
We celebrated my birthday at 1836 and had a fantastic experience. I had the Chef Special (crab cake stuffed salmon) and risotto of the day (onion and goat cheese) along with a glass of the Taylor 10 Year Tawny Port. Our server, Rolando, gave excellent suggestions and service. Highly recommend!
My husband and I celebrated a late Valentine’s Day at 1836 Steakhouse! We decided to sit at the bar and Johnathan (and the female bartender who’s name I did not catch) took great care of us! The food and drinks were amazing!!! We look forward to coming back soon!
This was the first time I've ever visited this restaurant. It is absolutely stunning from the outside. As you walk in, its atmosphere is immediately welcoming. We were seated upstairs, which was not ideal since they didn't have any handicap access, but the person in our group who made the reservations didn't think to mention the need. It was playoff weekend, so the bar was busy as we made our way past. We made it in time for Happy Hour! Their drinks were delicious, and the waiter made sure we kept an eye on the clock as the end of the hour neared. I ordered the stuffed pork tenderloin. My husband had the Salmon. Both were delicious, moist, and beautifully plated. It was overall, a wonderful experience. Service was rated 3 stars because the food took forever to come out. Luckily, I was in great company. The check took forever to get. Luckily, I was in good company. After I switched to water, the water never refilled my water glass despite my asking twice. Those are little things that irk me as a guest, but not nearly enough to reduce the 5 star rating establishment as a whole so exceedingly earned.
Great ambiance and mouth-watering, delicious food. I had the red fish and my friends had the sirloin and the steak Diane. We were very happy with all three dishes. We will definitely be back very soon.
Wow! I've been wanting to go here, and someone took me and the family there! Staff is so attentive and friendly and makes sure that you are well taken care of! The food and drinks are fantastic!!! I had the top sirloin, my daughter had the ribeye with blue cheese, my hubby had the chicken fried steak! I think anything you order will be delicious!! Will definitely be back! I would love to go to their bar upstairs next time!
This Huntsville classic home with dark wood and a rich atmosphere is the quintessential steakhouse. We had ribeyes and grilled asparagus. Everything was cooked to perfection. The wait staff was responsive and informative. The only negative is that there was a hint of sweetness, possibly a thin steak sauce that was unexpected. Despite this, the cooking technique was perfection, and the meat was prime quality. One other thing to know is that their vegetable selections are seasonal, so your side options will vary.
I came here for a first date so we just ordered drinks at first (easier to bail after just a drink). The bartender was very friendly and never rushed us. We eventually got a table and ordered dinner. Everything was absolutely delicious! Our waitress was very interactive and chatted with us throughout the evening. She even went into detail about the different beers and cocktails they had since the person I was with was very into it. Luckily it was during a slow day because my date and I ended up eating and drinking at our table for almost three hours. Our drinks were phenomenal too and we both had a lot of fun and never once felt rushed. The atmosphere is a classy relaxed feel and a lovely gem in the Huntsville area. A bit overpriced, but not obscene.
The meats were really good and tender. It was a really good experience. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. We will be back.
Best meal I've had in a while! I eat out a lot. Always excellant.
Great selection of music. This place is #1 my friend. Service was great and food was delicious. Get the cheesecake dessert or else.
My grandson who is visiting me in Conroe had been to your restaurant once before. So we decided to come for me to see it too. Everyone was so kind and accommodating and the food was delicious! I will be back.
Our food was absolutely delicious and our server was awesome! We came from Tomball with our friends who live in Magnolia. Can't wait to visit again
This was our first time to enjoy this Restaurant. Kaitlyn was our server. She was very informative and attentive. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The shrimp and grits were good as well. We had the bacon and goat cheese appetizer, fantastic. Hope to come back the next time we are in town. Thank you Chef and Kaitlyn.
The service was top notch (shout out to Sarah for the food and drink recommendations). The cocktails were excellent, the steak was just perfection, and the Risotto was a chef’s kiss. The atmosphere was pretty good…I’d recommend either trying sitting upstairs or outside. Overall, this is a must for anyone in or near Huntsville!
We celebrated my brothers 80th birthday at 1836. Gilbert Garza was so helpful with our reservations and making sure they could accommodate all requests to make my brothers day special. The hostess/waitress worked so hard and made no errors. Food was delicious and atmosphere was rustic and comfortable. Everyone in our party kept saying how good the food was and what a great job our server did. Gilbert made sure everything was taken care of to make my brothers day special. Highly recommend this place for any occasion.
Had the best experience here all because of our server. He was so attentive to our table even though the restaurant was packed. If you are ever at 1836, ask for Gabe!
Although my first experience was 3-Star, I'm giving it a 4 because I think I ordered the wrong thing. My friend & I shared 2 appetizers: goat cheese and fried green tomatoes. So delicious but not fan of the honey balsamic dip for goat cheese. The dip couldn't be tasted with the powerful rosemary in cheese. Tomatoes were perfect! We ordered a pitcher of white Sangria and it is light & refreshing. Here's where it went wrong - the Sunday prime rib. Although the heartiest piece of prime rib I've ever had, it also was the most flavorless. No crusting or flavor (thank God for creamy horseradish). It was also too undercooked for me. I did, however, take it home, doctor it up, pan seared it in cast iron skillet and salvaged it for dinner next day. Our server was attentive too. I would go back but I'd only do appetizers & drinks, maybe try a seafood dish.
Faith, my waitress was awesome. The bacon mac and cheese was absolutely amazing. The goat cheese ball things were not what I expected (never had anything like this before) but tasted great. The steak was just "ok". It was not bad by any means, but it was not any better than a lesser priced steakhouse. In their defense, I did go about 45 minutes prior to close, so that may have had something to do with it. The Old Fashioned I had tasted great as well, but they do not have the proper single ice cube for it.
Nice change for an anniversary date. I would go back occasionally, but honestly love City Hall Cafe or Farmhouse better. I ordered the salmon with asparagus and had them add the Oscar topping you can get for a steak. It was really good. Overpriced, but good. My husband made the reservation for our anniversary. They sat us upstairs. Which would have been nice and cozy if it wasn’t for the extreme hot temperature and the really loud atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly. I would go back, but only in colder months and make sure to sit downstairs.
My rating is really about 4.50! The bartenders excel at their business! The Sazerac I ordered was a tad beneath Commanders Palace but not much! I appreciated the bartender, assessing my tolerance for absinthe before he made my drink. My wedge salad could’ve been a little more chill. This makes the iceberg lettuce really crunch. Otherwise, it was fresh and delicious. I really enjoyed my steak. It might’ve been a little overdone for me but again it was delicious. The macaroni and cheese was as good as everyone else says it is! The desserts were lackluster. i’d suggest they try to make a really great bread pudding with meringue on top and a great whiskey sauce. If those that don’t like this, they could just use their current vendor. Our table of four all enjoyed their dinner. We appreciated them, allowing us to bring our own bottle of wine, which they graciously served. The staff was uniformly gracious and kind . Reserving a table ahead of time and requesting a quiet area made our visit very enjoyable. 1836 is about the best year in Texas history in this restaurant does Texas proud.
Tonight my girlfriend and I shared the 22oz porter house steak. We ordered it medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. We added the compound butter to it which gave it that richness I crave. Caution - the butter is made with anchovies paste which gave it the fishy flavor. Once it was smothered on the steak it was fine for me but for some it might be too much. The steak over all was excellent. We were both hungry to start and we still didn't finish the whole steak so it's definitely big enough for two. I highly recommend the house salad as it was the best house salad I have ever had. It had cranberries, carrots, tomatoes and onion. Definitely a step higher then all others I've had. My dad ordered the chicken fried steak and it looked amazing and it was a very generous portion. He also said it was a very good cut of meat with no gristle. The one complaint I do have is that they said they didn't have any baked potatoes, only mashed. With a grocery store right down the street the manager could have easily remedied this situation. I personally love my loaded baker when I'm doing steak night so this was a big deal for me, but nothing to be rude about. So we ordered the loaded mash potatoes and Gouda mac and cheese. These were mediocre. My parents did order the asparagus which was amazing. My party of four got right in and the service was excellent the entire time. Our waiter was a gentleman and kept our drinks full. We went on a Wednesday night so it wasn't too busy. I can't speak for a weekend night as this was the first time going. This was an overall pleasant experience.
Thought this steakhouse would be outside my work travel allowance, but I was pleasantly surprised at reasonable cost. It would have been $6 less if I showed up at happy hour. (Ends at 6:30). I ate upstairs, neat environment, great waitress. I ordered house sirloin with mushrooms and onions with a side of grilled asparagus, a long with onion soup. Put it on the return to list.
I loved that the place was built inside an old home so we gave it a lot of character. Overall the food was really good, almost great. If I could, I would have rated it 4.5 for the food. I had the chicken fried steak and it was average but my wife had the rib eye and my daughter had the filet and they were both really good.
Calamari was very chewy, 16 oz ribeye steak was chewy but ok, baked potato was old, asparagus was tough. Gilbert (server) was great! Drinks were good. Wedge salad was ok.
Good food, great atmosphere a d great service. I would recommend 1836 Steakhouse and will visit again.
Calamari was tough but dipping sauce was great. Blackened redfish was extremely salty but the sauce was wonderful. 1836 burger was dry and could use some seasoning or more sauce. Love the atmosphere but will try the ribeye if we go back.
I didnt want blue cheese crumbles or dressing on my salad. Asked for Cheddar. when I got my bill they charged me .50. They also charged my friend for extra butter for a baked potato. Reason for the charge: they don't do substitutions. Chances are we will not be back.
Muy buenos cortes yo pedí el pork chop sabroso aunque las sal predominó las margaritas muy pequeñas eso si sabrosas y un precio de regular a alto
Just Ok. So, not worth the price in my opinion. For the price and online build-up as a fine dining experience, I expected a bit more. Yes, there were some highlights, and some low-lights, in the end resulting in a mediocre experience. First, the positives. Service friendliness and attentiveness was good. The soups and salads were good, in fact, the wedge salad was excellent. The side of steamed vegetables was cooked perfectly. Now, the “just ok” items. The chicken fried steak was average. The second basket of rolls (more about the first basket later) was ok, too. Two of the three sirloin steaks were of average quality, but not as tender or flavorful as similar (and a lot less expensive) sirloin steaks at Texas Road House. The side of steak fries was warm, but nothing special. And, the three layer chocolate cake, while it was clearly of the store-bought variety, was decent. Finally, to the areas for improvement. The first set of rolls, which were touted as”right out of the oven,” were lukewarm and burnt on the bottom. The server did bring out a second set later on. My steak, ordered au poivre, did not come au poivre. I alerted the server, who brought out a dish of peppercorns and a separate dish of cream sauce for me to make the au poivre myself. However, I’m glad I did have the au poivre, because without it, my steak would have been inedible. It was so tough and filled with gristles that I had to cut it into tiny pieces and drown it in the sauce to eat it. For the server, who was very friendly and attentive, there were a few mistakes that I’m sure will be sharpened with experience. For example, he never took our drink order. He hastily filled our water glasses at the beginning, but didn’t offer any other drinks. The second basket of rolls was returned with our original half-consumed dish of whipped butter - since it was taken back to the kitchen for the refill of rolls, the butter dish should have been refilled and returned full. The wedge salad was said to be included with my sirloin steak dinner. However, the bill included an up-charge. One other disappointment was the menu. This being our first time to the restaurant, we had gone to their website and examined the detailed menu. However, at the restaurant we learned that they no longer had that menu. Several of the items we had planned on getting were no longer offered. And, the remaining items were now priced higher. Overall, we are glad we went to 1836, if nothing more than to satisfy our curiosity about the nature of the experience and the quality of food. Now that we’ve experienced 1836, we probably won’t be back, as there are many other higher quality and less expensive dining establishments in Huntsville.
We’re in Huntsville for training and decided to try 1836 Steak House after seeing how good the food looked. The restaurant itself is beautiful and very clean, and we were seated upstairs, which was nice. I ordered the ribeye cooked medium, and my friend ordered the filet well done. It did take a while for our steaks to come out, which we understood—places can be short-staffed and busy. Unfortunately, when my steak arrived, it was cold. I tried to eat it without complaining because I could tell it was well seasoned, but it was just too cold to enjoy. My friend’s steak also came out closer to medium instead of well done, which she wouldn’t normally prefer. We don’t like sending food back, but we had no choice. When the steaks returned, my friend’s steak was cooked well done, seasoned properly, and she really enjoyed it. On the other hand, my steak was only semi-warm. At that point, I didn’t want to complain again, so I ate it. Our server was very apologetic and even comped our meal, which we truly appreciated. Overall, it was a disappointing dinner because the flavors were good, but the execution just wasn’t up to par that night. That said, I would still recommend giving this place a try, it may have just been an off day. I’d be willing to come back the next time I’m in town and give it another chance.
This was the third time we have eaten here in the span of 2 months. The first time the food and service were amazing. The second time, when we had been served our salads, I noticed a hair in my food. I didn’t think much of it, as it looked similar to my beard hair, so maybe it was from me. However I found another piece of hair in my salad, as did my girlfriend. We let it go, as I have worked in the food industry before, mistakes happen, I am not one to complain. The rest of the night was fine. The third time we went, we did not get our salads and the bread wasn’t mentioned until I had asked. It was 6:15, last time we ordered before 6:30 we had gotten salads and bread immediately. I brought these up to the waitress a little before 6:30, just curious as if we were to get salad and bread. She had ignored the salads entirely and said the bread will be out as soon as they are ready. I understand the bread is fresh, but the salads were never addressed. Not to mention the steak was colder in the middle than usual and there was none of (what I assume is) the raspberry vinaigrette. In the end I think this is a great place to eat, one of the best in Huntsville, but just disappointed the last two times.
We returned for our 10 year anniversary....Unfortunately it did not meet our expectations. My husband made reservations 2 weeks in advance but there was no table. We had the choice of waiting to be seated upstairs or wait longer for a table downstairs. We opted for downstairs. Service was incredibly slow. My husband had told them it was our 10th anniversary when he made the reservation and told the hostess again upon our arrival. We were told we would be served flutes of champagne...none was served. The Oscar Sauce that I loved and actually the reason for returning has been discontinued but is still listed on the online menu. My steak was also undercooked. It was definitely not the experience we hoped for.
Could have just been a sub par experience, could have been normal, not sure. The staff was nice, servers were doing everything they could. The appetizers were decently quick and very good, bar was quick. But when it came to getting dinner it took 2 and a half hours, but not just for us, for every table, we got there before 7 and left at 9:50, tables were still getting food when we were leaving. After waiting that long we got cold steaks, mis cooked steaks and over cooked burgers. It was very disappointing when you pay $30-60 for a steak and you get something so disappointing. Not sure what the chef is doing in his kitchen, but he could do so much better. It was a busy night, but it isn't a giant restaurant. It might be good for a couple people, but going in a group was not worth the money, Texas Roadhouse would have been better which is saying something. Edit: a month later and the manager who told me to email him, never emailed me back. So take that how you will.
Over hyped and over priced. It was quite possibly the worst fillet I have ever had. To be fair they did comp my steak but I would rather have had one I could eat afterall, that's why we went. In my opinion a floor manager is needed almost like a maitre d. The staff seemed completely ambivalent to one another. It was our first-time under the new management and probably our last which is a shame.
Disappointing Consistency from a Place with High Expectations We’ve been to 1836 four times now, genuinely hoping each visit would improve but unfortunately, the experience has been consistently underwhelming, especially for a restaurant that markets itself as a high-end steakhouse. The service is always friendly and attentive, which we appreciate. But the food quality just doesn't match the pricing or the upscale image they’re aiming for. Each time, regardless of what we’ve ordered whether appetizers, steaks, or entrées the results have been the same: inconsistent execution and subpar quality. The steaks are the biggest letdown. I’ve tried both the tenderloin and the sirloin on separate visits. The tenderloin had more fat than meat, which is unacceptable for such a premium cut. The sirloin wasn’t dry, but it lacked the tenderness and quality you’d expect. It tasted like a lower grade of steak, and based on the texture and flavor, I don’t believe they’re using high-quality cuts. You can also tell the grill temperature is too high the outside sears too fast, leaving the inside unevenly cooked. Their steak sauce is just as disappointing: it tastes like a salty, artificial version of A1 mixed with an overly buttery base that overwhelms the steak rather than enhances it. Sides don’t fare much better. Portions have gotten smaller while prices climb. The baked potatoes are tiny and inconsistent either overcooked from sitting too long or undercooked and tough, topped with a mound of nearly frozen sour cream that ruins the texture and flavor. The appetizers, including the calamari, have been consistently off every visit. The calamari is supposed to be crispy and hot with balanced sauces, but it always arrives lukewarm and soggy, drenched in sauce with no crunch or texture left. Even when we've ordered something different like the 1836 burger the same quality issues show up. While the burger itself has good flavor, the bun was burnt on top from being seared at too high a temp. At this price point, every component should be handled with care. A great burger should be excellent from the meat to the bread not just "good enough." As someone who knows good food and cooks at a high level, I wouldn’t feel comfortable serving plates like this, especially not at these prices. It’s frustrating to spend this much money on meals that feel rushed and poorly executed. Huntsville doesn’t have many upscale dining options, which is part of why we kept coming back, hoping for a better experience. But after four visits with the same food quality and execution issues, it’s hard to justify coming again. This restaurant has potential, but the kitchen needs to seriously raise its standards if it wants to live up to the name and the price tag.
Had dinner tonight and the French onion soup and wedge salad was amazing. Wedge was 1/2 the normal size of any wedge we have ever ordered but it was great. The appetizer fried calamari was soggy and the blackened red fish was over cooked with sticky rice and raw shrimp. We normally give this restaurant 4 stars but this evening was a bust and 2 stars was more for the chocolate cake. Maybe the chef took Sunday off. I don’t think we will try a Sunday again
We normally love this place and have visited several times with our SHSU student. Last night we had an 8:15 reservation for 7. We showed up a bit early but were seated. We had to go find a waitress. Took 30 min to receive drinks and apps. Took another 30 min to order. Never received bread for the table or more toasted bread for the spinach dip that we requested. After another 30 min, we cancelled our food order and went to Taco Bell. Pretty disappointing after our daughter’s SHSU ring ceremony. Our waitress was struggling. A manager never came over to check on us or apologize. Bummed as we had really talked the place up to our guests.
We had a large group of people that should’ve had a minimum of three servers, we had one server and she worked her tail off, trying to keep us happy. Hamburger buns were brought out as dinner rolls they were hard and stale. By the time we got our food three hours later everybody just put it into go boxes and left.
Empty inside but everything toook foreeeverrr. We woulda been out of there in a reasonable time anywhere else. Incredibly slow kitchen on simple things. Don’t come thirsty bring your own water. Oh and ask for bread! Apparently it’s a secret
My steak was tough, over cooked, and had no flavor. It was hot and stuffy, I was so disappointed. I reserved it for my daughter's birthday dinner, and I thought they would make it special for her turning 13. But they done nothing. It's supposed to be a fine restaurant, so I assumed they would have the better cuts of meat, but my New York strip wasn't even shaped right.??? I have had way better steak on the buffet at golden corral. The bacon Mac and Gouda was good and the butter. Although the rolls where dry.
Honestly don’t know where to begin… we weren’t offered or served complimentary dinner rolls, drinks were slow, order was incorrect and then they remade it incorrectly a second time but took more than 20 minutes to do so. So I ate my meal and then later, my wife ate her incorrectly prepared meal. Figured they couldn’t screw up dessert… my coffee is cold waiting for crème brûlée. I had such high hopes and this isn’t it.
Horrible! My family had a reservation for a large party to celebrate my cousin’s graduation. After we placed our order we were left waiting for OVER AN HOUR. We had to get up and find our waitress to find out what was taking so long. Turns out the kitchen never got our ticket ! We were told that it would be coming out shortly THREE TIMES and yet it never did. There was also no airflow in the sitting area and when I mentioned this to the waitress she said she would fix it bur never did. Waitress only checked up on us twice and never told us when the food was coming. We ended up waiting TWO HOURS in the hot dining room and there was still no food. When we all got up to leave , they finally said our food was ready and they would pack it to go. They only packed 5 out of 11 meals. The ones they did pack were not even that good and not worth the wait They then had the audacity to charge us. How shameful. What a great way to celebrate my cousin’s graduation. Do not come here with large parties.
After having reservations my party and I sat for 20+ minutes without being greeted as a server in any way. After about 25 minutes the host gave us water after giving water to the table seated after us. We proceeded to ask if the bar upstairs could serve our drinks due to the long wait for a server. Before we finished the question, the host walked away and provided no response. We continued to sit for 10 more minutes until the table next to us who was seated 10 minutes after us got a server and an apology for the wait while we continued to sit ungreeted. Other patrons were crowding our small table located directly by the door in cold December. I hate to attribute the treatment to my parties race but as the only POC in the restaurant and the extreme lack of professional service we are left wondering if our lack of service was due to predetermined stereotypes. WOC B WARNED.
My friends mother had called to make a reservation, when asking if she could get in on a certain night, the lady on the other line mockingly laughed at her and said no. When my friends mother asked if we could be on a waitlist they continued laughing and said no again. It was not the decline that upset us, it was the mocking and the disrespectful nature of the receptionist on the other line. I would expect more from a place that is supposed be “high end”. extremely disappointed in the behavior she recieved.
We’ve loved this place for years, so tonight was a real plot twist. Ordered the 14 oz NY strip and what arrived looked more like a pancake in witness protection—thin, overcooked, and mostly fat and gristle. Honestly, if I got 7 oz of actual steak out of it, that’s being generous. Manager offered 50% off the steak… which was cute, considering half of it never existed to begin with. The bananas foster? Let’s just say it came out with so much alcohol I’m shocked it didn’t require a valid ID to order. And no, it definitely didn’t burn off. I’m pretty sure the flame table was the most exciting part of the dish. The house salads looked like someone swept together the bottom scraps of a dozen iceberg heads and said, “Eh, good enough.” The real tragedy: the venue is fantastic. Gorgeous space, great atmosphere, the kind of place you want to enjoy. But the food? Nasty, overpriced, and nowhere near what it used to be. We won’t be back. Too bad—this used to be one of our favorites.
We made a reservation for 6:45 pm. We were there at 6:30 pm. We were seated, ordered drinks and food. The drinks cans out. The be appetizers took over an hour to get to us. After appetizers we sat there waiting for our main course. It never came and we had zero communication from Gabe who was helping us. Eventually around 8:30 pm and close to 2 hours since we sat down, I asked him an our our food and he told us it would be another 25-35 minutes. Worst experience with a steakhouse in North America. We had to cancel our order and go to Texas Roadhouse 2 miles away. Horrible customer service, horrible communication, entitlement on not taking time to communicate delays. I would highly say- PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT. They get off on being one of few steak houses in Huntsville but dangerously fail on customer service
