If you’re looking for an elevated, flavorful brunch experience in Kansas City, Union on the Hill is a must-visit. Located at 2976 Gillham Rd in Kansas City, MO, this spot absolutely lives up to the hype. I had heard so many great things before going, and I’m happy to say it did not disappoint. The brunch menu is impressively diverse, with something for everyone. It was honestly hard to choose because everything sounded so good. We started with a vanilla oat milk latte, which was perfectly made — smooth, rich, and not overly sweet. For starters and mains, we tried the smothered biscuit, dill caper deviled eggs (including the sriracha version, which had the perfect kick), buttermilk fried chicken, the chicken and waffles three-way (beautiful presentation and incredible flavor), and the vegetarian quiche of the day. Every single dish delivered on flavor, quality, and presentation. You can truly tell care goes into both the food and the overall experience. This has officially earned a spot on my list of top brunch spots in Kansas City. Highly recommend for a weekend brunch date, girls’ brunch, or when you just want to treat yourself to something delicious. Meatloaf??? Really? Who orders meatloaf when going out to eat at a restaurant? Well, I thank this server here who talked me into ordering meatloaf for the first time ever at a restaurant… and (sorry mom! RIP) this was the most delicious meatloaf ever. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, with tasty heirloom carrots, English peas, and mashed pumpkin… wow. Washed down with a robust margarita, just right amount of salt on the rim. Sitting outside, chilling as partake of this meal was just wonderful, with a little park across the road in this cool neighborhood. This is (if I recall) a relatively new restaurant, and here is to many more years and visits! Clean, friendly, tasty, inviting local owned business. Highly recommend!

Went to dinner for New Year's Eve. Fresh high-quality ingredients expertly cooked. The service was friendly and attentive. The place had such a warm ambiance. What a hidden gem!!

Second time this year (2025) I’ve been to Kansas City and second time visiting this joint. Bar none best brunch I’ve had consistently. Wait staff on point! Atmosphere on point! Food is five star. The owner and his staff are dead serious about their craft. Cannot wait until I bring my folks to experience this!

Union on the Hill is a must visit restaurant! The menu is full of so many delicious options and uniquely crafted drinks! I’ve been coming here since they opened about three years ago and every time the food is spot on, atmosphere is excellent, and service is exceptional!

Fresh food and great service! The ambience is nice, clean, and modern. There is a private room that will fit 12 people for lunch meeting or any celebration. There is a free parking space in the garage for the Union on the Hill retail store.

This was a very nice experience. The neighborhood vibe is so relaxing. If you live in the area this is a great place to hang. I took a friend here to celebrate her new position. We sat at the bar, though there were tables available l. And we kicked ourselves for not choosing to sit outside ( it was a beautiful day) The bartender was pleasant and knowledgeable about both the cocktail and food menus. We had the lobster rolls with fries and they were delicious. Drinks were on point too. I ordered the deviled eggs to go along with a sandwich for my husband. I should have taken pics before I got in the car. The eggs weren’t beautiful when I got home but the taste was soooo good and the sandwich was perfect.

This is a great neighborhood restaurant, with excellent and focused service, exceptional dining experience, and amazing food and flavors. The Smoke and Mirrors cocktail is innovative and delicious. If you like oysters Rockefeller, you are in the right place. The Filet Meatloaf was innovative and excellent. All of the sides were very well seasoned, had the perfect temperature and portion size. I really enjoyed the bold and well seasoned flavors. I need to come back for additional selections and desserts. My score a 4.9.

Excellent restaurant. All food was delicious. Reasonably priced. The Brussels sprouts were superb, perfectly crispy and flavorful. The steak was tender and excellently seasoned. The desserts were superb, the crème brule and carrot take were our favorite. Great service and atmosphere.

Had brunch at Union on the Hill in the Hospital Hill District for the first time, and it definitely left a great impression. The space is bright, clean, and inviting, with a welcoming U-shaped bar that greets you as you walk in. Even though it was busy, we were greeted right away by a host and seated shortly after grabbing a drink at the bar. Service was friendly and attentive throughout. You can tell the staff takes pride in what they serve, and it shows. We started with their bread basket—more of a pastry basket, really—and it was a highlight. Think cinnamon roll, pound cake, biscuits, cornbread, and beignets, all served with housemade jam and butter. Most of it is made in-house, and it was a lovely start. Luke had the “Waffle Three Ways,” which included mini waffles paired with spicy maple, hot chicken, and mascarpone whip—he loved it. I had the salmon toast, which reminded me of a smoked salmon Benedict but on brioche, with horseradish crema, avocado, over-easy eggs, pickled veggies, arugula, and tomatoes. Delicious and well-balanced. Despite how busy it was, everything came out promptly and the staff never missed a beat. We checked out the dinner menu before leaving, and it looks promising—we’ll definitely be back.

This is a great little neighborhood cafe that's warm and inviting. Our server Kat was wonderful. She made sure we were cared for without ever making us feel rushed. The best parts of our meal were the smothered biscuit and the beef hash. Both are excellent! Unfortunately, my crab fried rice was too salty for my liking. The presentation was nice, tho. All in all, I would visit again to try more items on the menu. (There is a parking garage about a block from the restaurant, which was welcome on a cold day)

This restaurant was recommended to me as a great brunch spot and WOW, I certainly was not disappointed. With several people in my party wanting to try multiple menu items, I would say they have a great selection. You can probably tell from the photos that the food is high quality with also outstanding presentation. I went with the lobster roll which was delicious. I would get it again but probably not before trying some other delicious options first! I very much appreciate their willingness to accommodate my party of nearly 15 people. Our service was great and we loved the atmosphere. Would love to come back.

My first time here. From service to food everything was great. Highly recommend the French onion dip and the filet meatloaf. I subbed brussel sprouts for the mashed potatoes and they were amazing. Will definitely be back.

Finally made it over to check this restaurant out. Union on the Hill is not far from Crown Center. The decor and ambiance is classy but trendy with the right amount of bar and table seating for the space. Some of the pillars are decorated with framed pictures of Union Hill's history that was rooted in the city's early automobile era. Stepping right through the doors, getting a warm greeting by the bartender Kat, I parked right at the bar. She made me feel like I was a regular! Just two gals chopping it up about the food, the drinks, telling me about brunch over the weekend, the early beginnings with the food truck Happy Belly and the Head Chef George who's also the owner. Made quite an impression. Now to my order, first it was Happy Hour so from that menu I got a HH Muskets and HH Popcorn Shrimp. The Muskets & Lavender which was more citrusy spritz to me than what I was expecting so for my palette it was tart. The butterfly pea flower & lavender infused reiger gin, aperol, lemon, blueberry syrup and cava sounded like it would be right up my alley. Now them popcorn shrimp are lightly crisp not coated in panko or heavy breading but maybe southern cornmeal.. they were so good. I'd taken more shrimp over having the fries! The sauces: creole remoulade and sweet chili sauce with and an added bonus of green goddess dressing. I liked them all but favored the creole of course! Now there are quite a few southern comforts on the menu; I went For The Hands Lobster Roll for an entree and moved to a different type of Union cocktail, the Uh Espresso Martini. With that drink my tastebuds were revived! You can't go wrong with chocolate and coffee in my book and don't you just love when you order something that's one of your favorites and it's satisfyingly delicious. That sandwich didn't just have lumps of buttery lobster claw meat in a bun. Nope. It was HERBED butter flavor lobster meat in a lightly toasted brioche roll. The micro celery and butter lettuce are not lumped in but finely chopped in the roll with a side of dijonnaise sauce plus house made ketchup for the fries. Oh my goodness.. is what I thought with each bite! Sooo very good! And I dipped my sandwich in the sauce continuously. Seasoned just right! I usually don't eat my fries with ketchup but I did today! I wish it was a different kind of fry but I was too happy about my sandwich! I truly enjoyed dining here. The other waiter Luke was helpful and friendly too. I was also able to meet George and banter about my take on my food experience and plans to return.

Union on the Hill delivered an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. We began with the pork belly bites and hot mama shrimp for appetizers—both were packed with bold, delicious flavors. For our main courses, the variety was impressive: chop salad with steak and shrimp, lobster mac and cheese, filet, Cajun seafood, and filet meatloaf. Each dish was well-executed, showcasing fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation. The Smoke and Mirrors cocktail was a standout—a perfectly crafted drink that added to the meal's enjoyment. We finished with an assortment of desserts, each one as delicious as the last, providing the perfect sweet ending. Union on the Hill is a must-visit for its creative menu, excellent food, and top-notch drinks. Highly recommended!

Happy Belly Wings 5/5 Dip Duo 5/5 Oyster Rockefeller 4/5 Savory Fried Rice 3/5 Spaghetti Squash 3/5 The Pig Flatbread 4/5 Overall, the service was amazing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. The space feels intimate and great for a date night. My favorites were the Happy Belly Wings and the Dip Duo. The wings were cooked perfect. The dip duo was outstanding! The oyster Rockefeller was also delicious and had a smooth finish. The fried rice was a little spicy, not my favorite dish however it was decent. I will definitely be back.

Enjoyed the personal touch of a locally owned restaurant that the chains can’t provide. Cocktails were excellent with an appetizer of deviled eggs. Split the 14 oz rubbed ribeye which was plenty of two. Topped off with the limoncello cheesecake. Very enjoyable evening, with excellent waitstaff and friendly patrons. Will be back.

We came in during the lunch hour yesterday, greeted right away, and decided to sit at the bar- no wait. Our bar tender was friendly (sorry i didn't catch his name) and made fantastic cocktails. Try the Tornado! (picture posted) For appetizers we enjoyed the Deviled Eggs and Pork Belly Nuggets. My hubby ordered a Buttermilk Fried Hot Mama Chicken Sandwich which he was very happy with, moist chicken, the breading seasoned perfectly! I had their Artichoke Carbonara, sooooo good! The flavors with every dish were delicious. Service was fantastic. I highly recommend checking it out. We will be back to try more dishes!

I gotta give the 5 stars ⭐️! Been here a couple times but this last visit was rocking. The fried rice dish with chicken and an over-easy egg was packed with flavor, a little bit of heat and all together made it absolutely craveable. The short rib tacos was tasty and not something I would have planned to order but they were on social. The Chop Chop salad was a nice surprise, I loved the flavors, though for me the dressing was too sweet but that’s an easy adjustment. My favorite though are all the fresh flowers, the star-gazer lily was so aromatic and beautiful!

Been craving a good lobster roll and Union on the Hill did not disappoint! Hot, buttery, and delicious. My son also loved the seafood lover and our family had a wonderful meal.

It’s always exciting to have anew restaurant in town! This one caught my eye while I was in KC and I had to have a taste. The food was good I had the hanger steak and some a shrimp appetizer. The appetizer was a little confusing to eat as it was a lot of liquid but the flavors were there. I’m not a pork eater so I took the rinds of the mac and cheese but overall it was still good. 4.5 stars because the menu needs some non specialty foods for people who don’t want some of these (rather amazing) unique dishes. Service was excellent!

Tyrz That Taurean Goddess!

A surprised diamond in the urban core of the city!!!! The atmosphere was clean, crisp, and upscale. The service was pleasant, attentive, and informative. The food specials were intriguing and danced on the palette like a ballerina! The halibut was perfect!!! I was expecting more of a showstopper from the lobster rolls although it had great flavors the garlic bread did not do it justice! The drinks and appetizers took the show! This is definitely a come again spot!!! And YES!!!! I didn’t mind saying Bloody Mary once, twice, and even three times!!!!!! Keep em coming!!!

What a unique place! I’ve drove past this restaurant so many times, I’m very pleased we finally stopped in! The restaurant is very clean and well kept. Service was also superb. It’s not a big restaurant but it still feels spacious. We went during restaurant week so we were able to get an appetizer and full lunch meal for only $20! I got the soup of the day and the fried rice. I was very surprised with how great the food was! It looked like they had different types of cuisines so it’s not just one type of food they serve. I enjoyed my time here and highly recommend giving them a try!

Great take on thier food. Absolutley love there vibe it's like half high priced expensive restaurant half community urban atmosphere. All the food was great and the service was fantastic. Would definitely go there again and it has a menu that the kids would love to.

I really enjoyed this restaurant. It provided a modern, classy vibe to a quiet, cozy restaurant. They were extremely kid friendly, with all of the staff interacting with my small baby and making him smile. We got a variety of apatizers, and they were each unique and mouthwatering. We ordered the artichoke tempura, which was our favorite dish of the meal, we got the pork belly bites, which had my baby drooling. They were so tasty. Also, the fries paired with the pesto aioli that came with the artichoke tempura were otherwordly. We also greatly enjoyed the hummus and goat cheese pairing. If you are looking for a place to have "Girl Dinner", this is absolutely the restraunt for you. I would definitely come back.

Absolutely wonderful experience- phenomenal food, exceptional service, and beautiful atmosphere. The bartender was supper helpful and friendly and our cocktails were absolutely delicious (I highly recommend the tornado!). Our server was attentive, even though she was very busy. We shared the pork belly bites, and my husband had the Udon Noodles and I enjoyed the Scallops. Everything was cooked to perfection! We can't wait to go back!

Everything we ordered was so delicious! Generous portions, with both healthy and comfort food options. The environment was cozy and easy-going - a great date night spot! Our waitress Ashley was very friendly and helpful, introducing us the menu since this place is new. With all of the choices on the menu and cocktail options, we will be returning soon!

I have a gluten intolerance and the menu and server were not very user friendly. I asked if there was a specific menu or way to determine was has gluten and the server said it was self explanatory. I asked for the meatballs, Brussel sprouts and lobster and he came back and said all three had gluten - so it wasn't self explanatory. Other than that, great food, great ambiance, great service (other than the GF stuff).

Great food and staff. Always a good experience when I go. Their yogurt parfait is so fresh and delicious. The 3 way Chicken and waffles is next level 😏 . I have and will continue to recommend. Definitely a KC fave brunch spot.

What a treat! Neat out the way place with great food and service. I had the lobster roll and it was amazing, boys had the filet meatloaf and said the same. Ladies had seafood dinner and raved about it. And our server Erica was fantastic. Made great recommendations and knew everything we needed before we did. We will be back!

Tonight was our first time dining at Union on the Hill and it did not disappoint. Our server Seth was friendly and provided fantastic recommendations on the menu. The food exceeded everyone’s expectations, with the buttermilk chicken as the standout. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an excellent meal with a variety of options for all palettes.

The restaurant week menu was very nice. Our server, Seth, and the other staff were excellent and timely. Food received a 4 only because they ran out of a dish on the restaurant week menu and a beer on the regular menu. Will for sure go back.

My wife and I were pleasantly pleased with our first visit to Union on the Hill Resturant. For starters the atmosphere was calming and quante, with a generous amount of space between tables that allowed of easy movement without distracting others around. The service was welcoming and warm from the moment we entered. This was a tremendous benefit since we were not familiar with the menu. The menu included the 3 course options for restaurant week, which we took advantage of. The Crab Cake starter sits at one of the best I have tried and would order again. If you love seafood, the seafood lovers entrée will have you grinning from the exceptional flavors. My favorite was the scallops, cooked to perfection and amazing flavor. My meal ended with the Lemoncello Cheesecake, a definite must for anyone that is looking for a delightfully tartty dessert. Union at the Hill has been added to our return list. Exceptional work all around!

We celebrated my sister's engagement here and had a great time. The service was great. Ambience was nice. The lobster Mac and cheese was good but I would love to try some other things. The brussel sprouts were definitely worth it.

Love this place. My wife & I have been 4 times in the past year and will be coming again soon. It's quickly become our favorite way to kick off date night. Environment is cozy & upscale yet still feels casual. Service has always been great. Food is where it wins over my heart. Everything we've tried has been delicious.

I had a wonderful time dining during restaurant week! I got the chicken sandwhich and the crinkle fries. AMAZING! The best part about the whole experience though was our server Kayla! Very attentive and on top of everything! Wonderful with conversation as well.. felt like i had a friend for the 75 min i was there! I will def be back for Kayla and the food!

Overall, this is a solid place worth checking out. The drinks were excellent and definitely a highlight of the experience. I actually enjoyed the appetizers more than the main courses, which felt a bit less memorable in comparison. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout, which always makes a difference. Will I personally rush back? I’m not entirely sure—but I would still recommend this place to others, especially for cocktails and starters.

Good food. The shrimp creole could have been better. The sauce wasn't the best, too watery. The bread basket was good. Loved the fried chicken plate.

Union on the Hill is a short drive from the Power and Light district with free parking garage. The small plates menu are NOT worth it. Super expensive for the portions. The lobster roll and artichoke carbonara were both really good. Other than recommending avoiding the small plates, I would come back here. Service and food times were pretty slow for a quiet, rainy Thursday evening.

J
Jesse M.

We dined in on an early Saturday evening. We didn’t make reservations due to multiple options were available in their online system and we were a five minute drive away. We were greeted by a manager or hostess who when we stated we didn’t have a reservation condescendingly stated she had no availability in the dining area. We almost departed based on this but a party was leaving without being served and we were able to be seated in their place only after pointing this out to the her. Our server was friendly and attentive and made a recommendation on the deviled-eggs that were spot on! We ordered the fried rice with short ribs and buttermilk fried chicken. These dishes were good and I’d argue as other reviews that the price to quality is less than expected. The drinks we ordered were both good (margarita and picante drink) and at a competitive price point. The atmosphere is not too loud but busy which indicated to me they are a popular spot. It was a bit breezy when the front doors opened which made for a bit colder at time during the dining experience and I noticed multiple small space heaters to combat that problem, but appeared to only make a minor improvement. Overall, I would recommend it to others to try but to temper their expectations while also making a reservations. Consistency will be the key to their success.

Horrible first experience. We got in around Noon today and it was Restaurant week, so I understand it was more busy than usual. It took an hour and half for our food! It was 1:30 when she finally sat our food down! Other tables was served way before us and even the group that we came with that had to be seated at another table due to how large our group was had eaten and checked out while we was still waiting on our food. The food was good but we had to take it to go due to the fact we had to get back to work. The server we had she was miserable and wore it on her face. She was not friendly nor apologized for how late our meal came out. She had the worst attitude and did not get me the manager when I asked for one. Instead said "Not sure how much faster we could of gotten your food out". If she would of kept tabs on the kitchen the food would of came out hot and not cold. You could tell that it was sitting out for awhile. We would not have had to taken it to go. The Apps was def the best thing, the fried rice with braised beef was also really good but not as good as the Deviled eggs or the Pork Belly Bites, probably due to us having to reheat our food in the office.

This was my favorite restaurant until tonight. We had a reservation for 7:15pm for my mom’s birthday. My sister showed up at 7:10. She told the greeter that we had a 7:15 reservation. She says the greeter barely acknowledged her and did not seat her. She asked where she should go and the woman told her she should sit at the bar. We arrived at 7:30pm. We were told by the greeter that since we were “30 minutes late” that we would have to wait unless we wanted to sit by the door. It had only been 15minutes and my sister had been there on time. I told her we did not want to sit by the door because it is too cold. She came back and told us that they would be seating another person before us. I asked her how long the wait would be. she brought up being “30 minutes late” again… it was 7:39 at this point. i brought up the fact that my sister was there at 7:10 and she refused to seat her. She said “we have a strict policy that we don’t sit parties unless everyone is present” i told her that their “strict policy” needed to be posted/communicated clearly. It’s not on their website. She said it was in an email confirmation and asked for my email so she could send me their policy. I have attached the confirmation email I received when booking. Of course, This “strict policy” was nowhere to be found. We come to Union on the Hill at least once a month. My profile pic was taken there. It’s unfortunate we will not be returning. We were informed that the nasty greeter is part owner of the business. We left and went somewhere close and were treated like they wanted us there without a reservation. Spent about $500. My mom enjoyed her birthday dinner. 😊

I was in Kansas City for a few days. It was recommended that I try Union on the Hill. I visited this restaurant on September 17th. Ordered 2 drinks, fries and the buttermilk fried chicken plate (1/2 chicken, mashed potatoes, greens, and cornbread muffin). The drinks and fries were good. When I received my plate the food looked good. I noticed when I started eating the chicken strip it tasted weird like the meat was old. I cut into the leg and the wing both pieces were under cooked. Raw in the middle. I let the waiter know and sent the plate back. Being serve raw chicken ended my appetite. Waiter still billed me for the full meal even though I didn't even eat a quarter through the plate. Wake up in the middle of the night sick. Up all night my stomach was cramping and puking. Called the restaurant and asked to speak with a manager on 9/18 around 11. Was told it was the lunch rush hour and that I would receive a call back. Never returned my call as of today. Will never return back to this restaurant. If I could give it zero stars I would.
