Chose to go to Mala Sichuan Bistro for dinner this Chinese Newyear! Outside nearby there was a Lion and Dragon dance to drums it was amazing. I love to eat authentic Sichuan cuisine and cant keep a gage that isnt there! The Mala Crispy Beef, Dry pot Vegetable and Mapo Tofu are exceptional! Keep up the good work! 新年快乐🥳🎉
The food was delicious and came out fast! Cathy was our waiter for the night and she was so sweet and even gave us envelopes for the lunar new year! I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for great mala flavor and fast service
Cathy was a wonderful server! The food is always delicious, my belly is happy :) Reccommend the ants on a tree, dry hot pot, and mala beef tendon, so yummu!!
Went here for our team celebration. The restaurant was inviting, good service. The food was really good. These are shareable plates. Came out as soon as it was ready. Great flavor. The only things was the small wings and the small bites of rib both had bones which I didnt care for but the food was great.
We had such a great experience thanks to our server, Cathy! They were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome from start to finish. Our food and drinks were perfect, and they checked in just the right amount. Definitely made our night—thank you!
If you know Katy Asian Town, you already know the deal. Parking is a full contact sport, especially on Friday, Saturday, or honestly any day that ends in y. But trust me, once you survive that mess and get inside, it is absolutely worth it. I have been here multiple times and this last visit was right when they opened for lunch. Huge win. Service was crazy fast at first, but don’t get it twisted, the place filled up quick with families and groups rolling in. The energy stays high, but it never feels sloppy or rushed. The menu is stacked. Like, decision paralysis stacked. That’s one of the best parts. We ordered mapo tofu, soup dumplings, Mongolian beef, couple’s lung slices, and chili oil dumplings. Zero misses across the board. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. But let me be clear, the chili oil dumplings are the star. Absolutely unhinged in the best way. Perfect texture, insane sauce, and the kind of dish you keep thinking about after you leave. I would come back just for those and be completely happy. Mapo tofu had that legit mala kick, soup dumplings were juicy, Mongolian beef was solid, and the lung slices were surprisingly addictive if you’re into bold flavors. Bottom line, if you are willing to fight the parking chaos, you cannot go wrong. This place delivers every time. Worth the stress, worth the wait, worth the hype.
Great Szechuan restaurant, freshly prepared dishes, delicious flavors, very attentive service they even boxed my to go leftovers. Ample parking. Clean inside and out. Great service. Inviting Chinese restaurant atmosphere from the music to the asset with to the decorations. . The Chinese music is a nice touch to feel like you’re submersed in the culture. Would recommend. I’ll definitely be back. Note my rating system: 1 Star: I wouldn't recommend 2 Stars: Didn't hit my standards 3 Stars: Average (nothing special) 4 Stars: Above Average. Would recommend. Still looking for the 5 Star. 5 Stars: Top of their game. Great food. Great service. Would recommend and plan on returning.
Mala Sichuan Bistro in Katy is one of the best choices in Katy area for true Sichuan fare. If you like bold flavors, enjoy sharing plates, and don’t mind a little spice, you’ll walk away pleased. It’s a great place for groups (so you can try a variety of dishes), date nights, or even just a serious craving for chili oil, numbing peppercorns, and complex sauces. There’s something for everyone—even if you’re not a spice junkie. The menu includes lots of vegetables, mild dishes, and cold/self‐cooler options to temper the heat. The bistro has a nice visual vibe—warm lighting, well‑chosen décor that feels more refined than a takeout joint but still comfortable. Good for a casual dinner or a night out. The service and staff are very friendly and attentive- Highly recommended.
This was a completely different atmosphere from the location in Chinatown and not necessarily in a bad way. Definitely a larger crowd and more of an americanized feel to the restaurant. The service was quick, attentive, and friendly. The food had the same great taste! This time we ordered the Mala Crispy Beef, water boiled fish, and Cumin King Pork Hock. These dishes did not disappoint. Can never go wrong with Mala Crispy beef but the other two dishes were spot on and made for a nice variety. If you are looking for the best sichuan cuisine in Houston, this is your spot.
If you’re craving authentic Sichuan food, Mala Sichuan Bistro in Katy is the place to go. The dishes are always fresh and flavorful, with highlights like Mala Tofu Pudding With Fish Fillet, Basil Crispy Chicken and Eggplants In Spicy Garlic Sauce. The restaurant has a cool vibe, and the interior design enhances the overall experience. While the service can vary, the delicious food keeps us coming back.
My co-worker recommended this place and I gotta say it is pretty excellent. Their spicy crispy chicken has a nice numbing feeling to the tongue and the cumin beef is really good. We always get a big variety of dishes and it never disappoints. This has become one of our regular go-to spots for lunch. Definitely recommend trying this place.
We eat here often- authentic Sichuan Chinese food. They have a frequent diner via email so do a digital receipt We have gotten a lot of the dishes here. My favorites are spicy boiled fish and crispy chicken (水煮鱼和辣子鸡) but they’re all quite good. The stir fries are all really tasty. Chow mein is the only thing I would skip in my opinion. There are spicy and non spicy options and you can ask for mild too. They give rice with your entree orders. There’s multiple locations around Houston! I believe they recently got a Michelin mention which is great for a local chain! There’s high chairs and baby dish ware (plate and bowl) too for kids. The management hires lion dancers here during the lunar new year celebrations. You should call ahead to find out which days they perform at which location. Bring some cash to tip the dancers and they will take your cash through the lions mouth.
The restaurant's decor, from the furniture to the lighting fixtures, is beautiful! Very nice atmosphere for a family dinner and would make a great date spot as well. I went with my parents so there were three of us total but would have loved to go with a larger group so we could have tried even more dishes. We tried the Garlic Bacon, House Special Funky Cold Noodles, Crispy Mala Beef, Pickled Pepper Chicken, and Sauteed Lotus Roots with red chili oil. Everything was very tasty, but the stand out dishes for me were the House Special Funky Cold Noodles and the Crispy Mala Beef. Almost every other table had an order of the Spicy Crispy Chicken (served in a shovel) so will likely try that next time. The service was excellent as well. Our server Gigi, along with many of her colleagues, were quick to fill our water glasses and checked on us consistently throughout our meal to make sure we were doing ok. Would highly recommend if you're at the Katy Asian Town plaza!
Super relaxed atmosphere. It's family-friendly, and the staff is nice. I have been here 4 times, and the food has always been on point. The first two times I went there, they asked us if we knew what Mala meant, which was a new experience for us. Even though the food can be a little spicy for some, the numbness helps enjoy the flavors.
Outstanding experience! From the sweetest waitress Venus who was extremely informative & experienced with the menu. She answered our every question and made excellent recommendations. Everything came quick, fresh & hot! Small restaurant but plenty of seating. It was clean and spacious. Everything we ordered was flavorful & spicy like we love! I failed to get the name of our dishes, but I ordered chili & garlic dumplings, & the salt & pepper prawns with a side of steamed rice. Excellent! My family ordered spicy & crispy chicken in chili and garlic. That was a favorite. The stir fried rice was really good. The servings are shareable. There were 3 of us and we wound up packing some to go boxes. We're so glad we picked this spot in Katy China Town. It gets all stars from all 3 of us!
Mala has an expansive menu so there is something for everyone here. With vegetarian, vegan and meat options it's a great place for different dietary needs and restrictions and many dishes, like their eggplant and mapo tofu can be made with or without meat. The servers were very friendly and attentive and the restaurant has a beautiful and clean esthetic. The food portions are big for sharing so it's perfect for groups ans families. Highly recommend a visit!
Beautiful interior. Friendly staff. Got the crispy chicken, boiled fish, and fried intestine. The fish was my favorite. The chicken and intestine were on the sweeter side which was different from what I’m used to. Spice level was low probably to accommodate for more non Chinese customers.
Amazing food. Recommend the spicy chicken! (1/1/2026) Update: the food has significantly dropped in quality. I was slightly disappointed in the chicken as it has lost a vast amount of spice and crispiness. Service was somewhat disrespectful as we were handed a simple silicon rice box instead of the traditional one as we had only ordered a single dish (we ordered more later) at the moment. The previous day I went, we were handed a regular rice box and the store was much busier (they did not run out).
1st time Here. Food LOOKS amazing the But some came out Quick but room temperature is assume made just waiting to be plated. Ibwas trying to try Many dishes but middle of Ordering 3rd item the Mongolian Beef, Waitress tool our Menus while I was ordering. After finished she hadn't come back to the table for maybe 15mins when we wanted to Pay. Service isn't the Best. The food is lack luster. Booths are interesting you share it with the person behind you. It's one big Seat its uncomfortable hard wood but fine. You're not missing much by Not coming here.
People love the deep-fried meats dishes here, which are absolutely delicious. However, their stir-fried dishes taste heavily of chemical meat tenderizer. Ironically, the meat isn't even tender—it's actually pretty chewy and tough.
On February 14, 2026, while visiting Katy, my cousin (who drove in from Dallas) and I decided to celebrate since it had been a few years since we’d seen each other. We chose Mala Sichuan Bistro in Katy Asian Town, hoping for a memorable meal. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in many years. Two of our dishes arrived in under four minutes, which immediately made us question how freshly prepared they were. The third dish — the duck — came out noticeably later. All of the dishes were greasy, lacked flavor, and were served at room temperature, as if they had been sitting in a warmer. Nothing tasted fresh. The service was equally disappointing. It lacked warmth and attentiveness, and we felt more like an inconvenience than welcomed guests. For dishes priced over $15 each, we expected much better quality and care. We even boxed the food thinking we might try it again later, but it was so unappetizing that neither of us wanted it. The entire bag ended up in the trash. I genuinely try to leave positive reviews whenever possible, but my cousin and I simply couldn’t get over how poor this experience was. If you’re looking for something fresh, flavorful, and enjoyable, I would suggest choosing somewhere else. Honestly, we both wished we had just gone for Korean corn dogs instead.
The food is gas but what is going on??? as soon as me and my family arrived, we were met with nothing but disappointing service. we also didnt have a server?? the people who took our drink order, food order, brought the drinks, the food, the bill, were all different people. not a single server checked up on us whatsoever. i worked in the food industry for years im not gonna get on here and lie especially because i come here so often but i genuinely expect management to do better. they were clearly understaffed on peak hours on a Saturday and i saw a total of 3 servers. we never got our rice so i ended up having to ask the hostess, which should be none of his job responsibilities. and honestly shout out to him fr he was working the hardest out of anyone. it was so crazy to me that no one checked on us while we ate, also the bathroom was nasty. the music was sooooo loud i could tell other people were bothered too. honestly a mess.
