COVID update: This place is not enforcing masks as of 7/3/2020. Three people ahead of us in line and when I asked the same helpful manager below who cleaned everything for my wife, he said they’re strongly encouraging it. Two more people walked in behind without masks and had no issue as well. Not changing my rating, just want to make people aware! This has been a favorite location for my wife and I since moving to Waco about a year ago. The employees are always helpful and the burritos/bowls are always neatly made and very easy to eat! Recently my wife discovered she had a gluten allergy, and we have been trying to figure out where she can eat. We called ahead here and they actually have a whole menu explaining the different allergens in each of their items. Zach, the manager, went above and beyond, going to wash his hands extra, putting on new gloves, and getting fresh, clean utensils to make my wife’s bowl (pictured). ...and all with a smile and friendly attitude! We really appreciate him going above and beyond like this and are thrilled that we can continue to come here!
I met someone here for a date and got some chips with queso (small size) and a custom burrito bowl. There was so much food that it took me a lot longer than my date (who had a regular sized burrito) to finish. It was delicious and I intend to come back more often when I'm in the area. It's well worth the money I think.
I stopped in here hesitantly today because I generally go to the competition. However, Sam and Mary’s amazing service and positive attitude was beyond excellent! Because of them I will be a regular! Sam made the most amazing veggie chorizo bowl for me and I didn’t feel rushed to make decisions. Mary welcomed me in and kindly checked me out. A very rare experience in fast food these days.
The portion size of my burrito was large enough to eat as leftovers the next day. The ingredients were fresh. I got the tortilla chips and creamy jalapeño sauce. Delicious! I ordered online for pick up and the food was ready as promised right on time.

Delicious food! We intended to each get our own, but after seeing the amount you receive we decided to get nachos to share and burrito for home to share! Great food, great service, somber and cold atmosphere. Oh and the price was decent for the amount of food. No complaints here! We will be back and tell others about the goodness!

The food was good, but it was Mary’s customer service was five stars. It was a half hour before close, but she was upbeat and pleasant. She was eager offer suggestions and answer our questions. I had never been to Freebirds before, but I’ll go back just because of Mary.

The only thing that would make these burritos more delicious is if they were made with homemade flour tortillas, like the ones they make at El Taquito in McGregor! Next time my husband and I will order one burrito and share. Neither one of us were able to finish our entire burrito. Tea is delicious:) Went again and shared a Monster with my husband. This was my first time visiting, and I’m seriously blown away! The food was absolutely amazing — full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and served with care. this was our first time here, everyone and their mamas say to come eat at Freebirds and today is the day. it was fresh, tasty, quick, and reasonably priced. Sam took our order and he was incredibly helpful and suggestive and made 2 very delicious burritos. give this man a raise! highly recommend this place to anyone who’s over soggy Chipotle burritos.
This location had been a wonderful meet-up and lunch spot for friends, family and business. Today Easton and the team on the line did a great job taking orders and moving the customers quickly and kindly.

I was served by Dom right after a lunch rush and she was still so nice and amazing I told her it was my first time there and she helped me out throughout the ordering process and even recommended a few things, the food was great I got a burrito with steak and other things there's so much flavor!! I got it to go so I didn't get the dine in experience but I'm sure if I did it would've been great overall everything was amazing!

I received excellent service here. I stopped in for a quick lunch when traveling. I had never been to a Free Birds before. So I asked for some guidance. The young man was very thorough and friendly. The atmosphere was a typical fast food atmosphere. There really wasn't anything to note. I ordered a salad. The salad was good, but it wasn't worth $15 in my opinion. I think it was maybe a $8 salad.
Amazing as always, the options are diverse and really good. The staff is always friendly and there's never disappointment on the quality of the food. The only thing that I will change back maybe, it was the atmosphere. Before it was unique, kind fun to go every time, now it is just like walking in a simple chain restaurant (that it is but makes it boring) But at least the food is still amazing and that's what matters.
I absolutely LOVE this place! I love to get a bowl and season chicken, it's the best with some queso and cilantro🤌🏽! Although the last time I went and got a bowl my rick was t cooked all the way. But all the same I'm giving ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Time for my big burrito fix. I love Freebirds. The staff is friendly. The burrito is huge! The food tastes good. I just have a few complaints that would change my 4 stars to a five. I have this wonderful, hand-built burrito to unwrap. I take a bite, and it’s cold. I like my food at least warm. Maybe the guacamole and sour cream on the side would help, but I had the urge to take it home and nuke it in the microwave. Found a $2 extra charge for what, I do not know. Then, add jalapeños to the choices of condiments. If those changes were made, I could easily give 5 stars.
Staff wasn’t overly friendly. Actually they barely smiled. Trash overflowing while staff was standing behind the counter chatting. Asked for a side of guacamole and they barely had a scoop to give with nothing prepared to replace it. Was reminded why it had been so long since we had dined there. Never again.
My husband and I ate here for dinner around 7 pm. The food was lukewarm and the restaurant was very dirty. There were 3 people working, 2 of which handled food without gloves. 🤢 There wasn't anyone else there but us for about 15 minutes after we got our order and then only 2 people came in. There was trash and food on the floors and food all over the top of the trashcan. We won't be returning
It truly isn't the same anymore since they were bought out, the fun atmosphere is gone. The poor employees are way understaffed under paid. Not fair to them at all.

Visiting from another town - we went with what we presumed with a quick safe bet for lunch. How wrong we were... NOTHING is hot! We will see if we get food poisoning quite frankly.... The plate was luke warm, fighting saying the word cold. The refried beans.....may as well be liquid. The queso is so watered down, enjoy the drizzle. The sour cream streamed out of the bottle like water. If you want a mixed mess of different liquids and flavorless rice. THIS IS YOUR PLACE. Do not recommend!
Food was cold, and I got small portions Service was lacking, person making the food was in a bad mood. I really enjoyed coming to freebirds when they first came to Waco but now I'm going to avoid it like the plague.
*So after going on and off for over a year I felt the need to update review. It started off good but it has fallen short. Lines and employees worried about their phones and friends letting everyone else wait. telling me how to save money while charging me $41 for 2 orders of tacos and 1 reg burrito. I saved nothing. The service has gone way down here. The employees the other day didn't even care. I assume it was an off duty employee came in unclean off the street and was walking in and out of the kitchen area. he then sat at a table and left. Later he came back in in work clothes and began working as we were leaving. Just has gone way down but they did fix the hard to open door. Entering in the door is hard to open. The place is clean and I like the decor. There is an average amount of seating. You go through the line and order it how you want from the choices. Their food is good we've eaten here about 1 time a week for the last few months. Portion size varies on employee. We don't order a lot of stuff on our food and sometimes they don't account for that when putting meat on. The employees are fairly efficient but often they don't interact and it's not bad service it just isn't engaging. They do ask for tips at the register. Often there is no taco stands if you get tacos and your stiff spills out. But over all it's decent food at a decent price and pretty quick service.
I hate leaving reviews that are not very good but I’m pretty upset about my visit on Wednesday night. The place was dirty, very dirty. When I got to the counter to order, I was very hesitant with wanting to eat there, due to the way the bar looked. I turned and looked to my husband and told him I don’t even want to eat here after seeing it. Then, the lady taking the order was staring at me while I tried to figure out what I wanted to get for me and my kids. I felt rushed. The lady who actually made our plates was very nice though. The food was somewhat warm. We sat out on the patio and the patio had trash everywhere. The tables hadn’t been wiped, trash all on the ground. The bathroom stunk and was so gross. I just feel like some change needs to happen. It did not look good. I use to love it there but no longer a fan. Plus I spent $50+ for this awful dinner.
What happened to Freebirds?! We went in tonight and there was hardly any food on the line. We watched as they scraped the burnt rice off the bottom to make our food. The food was cold, there were no sauces out and while I didn’t get 2 scoops of rice, I did get 2 whole bay leaves in my bowl. Just not good. Save your $40 and go to Chipotle
We actually ordered over the phone. My friend asked for extra protein and explained that the last few times she paid for it but it was left out. The person on the phone hung up she called back and asked for a manger and was told the same thing. Order was delivered WITHOUT the extra AND they left the corn out of her bowl as well. One reason I choose Chipotle over Freebirds every time. They are so much nicer.
Hire more damn people so there isn’t just one person doing everybody’s order!
There was a line to the front door with only two people working at the counter. Those two employees did the best they could under the circumstances. They apologized for the wait. Both employees also mentioned that they are new hires. Several customers gave up after trying to wait. The burrito I ordered was not to the standard I have come to expect from Freebirds.

Went in for a chicken bowl. The rice bowls were very crusty. The beans were not cooked well and still hard to eat. All the tables were dirty and trash was overflowing and I was only one of two people in the store.
TERRIBLE! WON’T BE BACK! As an Aggie alum that spent many college dollars and hours in Freebirds in College Station, I was very excited when they came to Waco several years ago. But now, I’m actually embarrassed to even have walked into our local Freebirds on New Road in Waco, Tx. Two employees looked at me, then ignored me, while the third was busy actually working. I didn’t get a “Hi”, “Welcome in”, or any acknowledgement that I was a paying customer from the other two. Then there was the food. It is clear they don’t see much business anymore. The chips were days old stale, we got the bottom of the barrel of the queso, and it tastes like it, and the beans in the burrito were almost crunchy they were so undercooked. We won’t be spending anymore money here. Very sad because Freebirds used to be a great place for a really good burrito.
I ate here and bought a burrito that was $14. When the kid that was making it put the meat on, I was shocked how little he used. Then I tasted the burrito and it wasn't very good. When you put profits before your customers, you will get neither. Overpriced, small portions, underwhelming food quality and flavor.
The saving grace for this location is that the food is still good. Because the service is not. The last several times I've been there the workers just seem to not really care. They're not rude. They just don't seem to care. The burritos get smaller every time. I ordered the loaded queso and 2 of the 3 workers didn't know how to make it. And then I was told it doesn't come with chips. One of them told me most customers eat it with a spoon. In what world does on order of queso not come with chips?
There are dozens of better options for burritos or bowls in the area. Undercooked meat. Food poisoning warning! I confronted them about the meat and they said it was cooked to 165… laughable. Maybe they touch the grill with them temp reader and not the internal meat. I will say 50% of the steak in my bowl was safe to eat. 50% was not. They gave me a hard time when I brought them my plate showing the meat and said “we can’t control your preferences how you like your meat”. Pretty sure if it’s cooked to safe (135-165) I wouldn’t be writing this post. Pretty reasonable standards if you ask me.
My family and I just recently ate here. Only good thing about our visit was the employees. Very friendly. However, my wife and I got bowls, 2 kids got burritos. Total bill was $69.82. Are you kidding me? Nope. Be advised there are tremendous upcharges on many things they don't tell you about. I got water and was charged $2.05. Attached is my poor excuse for a bowl. Never again!
Tried to redeem a free freebird offer and it was refused by management after she had told me 3 minutes prior that it will work and to redeem the offer. She claimed I have to check in at least five times to redeem the offer but nothing in the fine print says that. Poor management and customer service catfishing for business with coupons that don’t work.
Was hungry for a burrito but quickly lost my appetite when I reached the counter and saw flies landing in the open food and on the counter. This was my second time visiting this location and witnessing the same thing. Additionally... the staff failed to greet me. This hasn't been my experience with other Freebirds locations. This store needs to address the issue with the flies and implement a pest management strategy to address the fly problem, keep food covered when not being served and clean regularly. Additionally, the seating area tables and floors appeared to be unclean with unclean tables and floors. This store is being poorly managed!
It was my first time here and I’m never coming back! I got the monster burrito and the lady explained to me saying that they put three scoops of beans, rice and meat . I saw the lady holding back on giving me half scoops of rice, beans and when it came to the meat she hardly put anything, I hate to see what a regular burrito looks like. I did not leave a tip. Definitely not worth the price.
My order was supposed to be ready at 2:30, and I didn’t even leave the restaurant until after 3. It should never take 45 minutes to prepare an order, especially considering all of the food is cooked ahead of time. It took them over 45 minutes to assemble a burrito, and they weren’t even that busy. Keep in mind this was 2:30 in the afternoon. It wasn’t rush hour by any means. This business is managed extremely poorly. Watching the madness take place, there was a lack of communication between team members, an overall lack of urgency by every team member, and terrible teamwork. I don’t know how the owner/operator of this location allowed it to get this bad, but it is truly remarkable. Hopefully they have a really good excuse for this performance, or this review is a wake up call, and if so I wish them luck cleaning up this mess.
So it started off good then we came to the meat and my son wanted white chicken and I wanted dark chicken they gave us the same kind of chicken and told me it was dark and told him it was white. They didn't really know what they had or what kind of meat they were putting on then we get down to putting stuff on it mind you I never liked how they have 2 on one tray because they always get stuff on mine that was only suppose to go on the other one so after the meat and the guy being careless and getting spicy stuff on mine I told him I no longer wanted it because it was not what I wanted and I was not going to pay for it and not eat it since he was so careless he got mad and would not give me the BBQ sause that I requested for the other burrito for my son. This is the second time they have let me down guess I won't be going back.
They messed up my order. Not just one thing several things. The service sucks as well. I placed an order online to go pick it up and waited 25 minutes extra and my order was still wrong.
We have been going to Freebirds for years and this location is recently under new management and it has been awful! We gave it a few weeks to let them figure out how to cook the meat correctly but went back and regretted it. The food was cold. They even microwaved the chicken because they knew it was cold! They were difficult about letting our kids order what they have been ordering for years. Portion sizes have gotten smaller and prices have gone up. The large queso used to come with two bags of chips and now it comes with the same one bag of chips you get with a small queso. The amount of meat in a burrito is pitiful. Especially for the price.
The Waco store is the worst Freebirds I have ever been to. It took them five minutes to even acknowledge me and I was the only one in line. The store was dirty and the cashier was rude to another customer that came in for a to go order. They don't even know how to fold a burrito. This is the freebird I ordered in the picture....smh.
This was trash. Took 2 bites if a 16.00 order and tossed it. Why make steak chewie like someone already ate it and spit it into my burrito. I left my unopened chips and salsa on the table.. I'd rather eat my own vomit then return.
Got a togo order today and I was very disappointed with the quality and portion of my bowl. The rice was over cooked and just mush. The sauteed pepper and onions were so few I thought they forgot to even put them in. My beans were dry and cold. Definitely not wanting to order from this place again. Maybe it was an off day I dont know... They definitely need to do better than that.
Only person in store waiting on a PAID doordash order. I asked for queso and chips to pay myself. Burrito sat there for 10 minutes wile waiting on people that just walked it. I asked if anyone was going to check me out and all I got was ignored and told paying customers come first. The manager just stuck her head out to talk shit. Worst service ever! Will not be going back
I wouldn’t call this a Mexican restaurant. This is California border at best. Food is incredibly bland. Chipotle makes better burritos.
Someone please explain how I was able to spend $81 for 4 people to eat here.... and then after that shock... please explain why my food and my husband's food was crunching... we didn't order chips. There was hard pieces of i dont know what with every bite I took... now I see why they closed all locations close to where I live. So after I almost threw up whatever that crunchy crap was and spending $81 on 3 burritos and 1 bowl, we threw the food away. Waste. Waste of food and money. Never again. Ha! On the bottom it asks which food from here i recommend for future customers. I recommend eating .... anywhere else! $20 per person... for a mystery crunch to donate to the trash. You're welcome for my recommendation
Sun Holdings really killed Freebirds. This place used to be so cool and lively and the food was delicious. They killled the whole vibe and the food is now mediocre at best. I used to LOVE Freebirds and now it’s maybe a once a year thing.
I visited the Waco store this past Saturday around noon. I waited in line for 15 minutes before being able to order. They only had two people working the front, one of them doing on line orders as they came in. Once I reached the front of the line, I was informed the ground beef had yet to be finished and would take another 20 minutes, but that I could order something else? I came to the store to try a very specific, advertised item shown both on line and in store. The manager, was borderline argumentative, was unable to validate or listen to my concerns, and just made excuses. I stopped going to Freebirds a long time ago, this visit was a remimder why.
Very disappointed. I was so excited for some free birds after a long day at work. As you can see in the pics my bowl is literally half full. And probably like 5 tiny diced of chicken. Not only is the bowl beyond disappointing the customer service was just as bad. The employees ignored me and were gossiping amongst themselves while halfheartedly making my bowl. I love free birds but this will probably be my last time at this establishment. PS ordered chips and queso and got about 10 chips in my bag 👎
Huuuuge disappointment. Order food cause I'm sick and wanted something i could have leftovers from. Jokes on me. The bowl wasn't even half way full, there was barely any rice and beans, a sprinkle of lettuce, and 50% is just chopped onion. Disgusted. Truly appalled. Quality has obviously fallen off since when i started eating with this chain. Oye
This the nastiest restaurant. It smells like old feet and the service is horrible. The grill was caked with old food. It took them 20 minutes literally to make two orders. Not recommended!!
Terribly service, terrible food. I waited in the line for at least 5 minutes before anyone came to help me. I had a question about the specials and the worker didn’t know and had to get a manager, which took another almost 5 minutes. When the manager came to talk to me, she was rude and short with me. The chicken I got on my bowl was raw, but I’m not even going to bother trying to get it fixed, this is a terrible establishment that I do not recommend trying.
We had to wait about 40 minutes for our online order, just to find half of it missing. When we tried to tell the staff, at first they were trying to correct us. When we finally did get the other half, they didn’t want to give us any side of consume for the birria we got. We finally asked, even if it didn’t come with it, could we please get a side of the sauce, they had so much attitude. When we finally did get to eat our food, it wasn’t even good. The experience wasn’t worth the effort or the money.
Restroom was dirty toilet for a poop no soap;;; ordered you supposed to put a scoop of meat portion correctly, not less got to work. The meat seems raw the taste and texture of the meat seemed like it was spoiled meat. Try calling the restaurant it rang one time and then the call says cancel and then it hangs up. I called three times. There were three black girls working one had a green shirt at the register. I did not see no manager or anything or unless the girl on the register was the manager just have changed from the preview time I came when Eric was there was a gym and then before him, you can bowl needs more portion of your white container rice not one scoop there was 2 girls come in and got there food free wow
A few bites into the burrito I noticed the steak was a little bouncy and had a weird texture to it. I removed a few pieces out to see if they were just fatty pieces of steak some of them were but some of the pieces were completely raw only slightly seared on the outside. I called the store and supposedly spoke to the general manager who claimed that my food wasn’t raw that my steak was “medium rare” because they check them on the grill up to 165 degrees. The steak dosent even look like it ever hit a grill the steak looked and felt like it was boiled. I told her I enjoy my steaks medium rare but I could barly chew thru these bite sizes pieces of steak bc they were raw not tender she proceeded to say she’ll have a word with there cooks and kept saying they don’t serve raw food but my pictures say other wise . The supposed general manager took the conversation so poorly I didn’t even receive an a apology or anything.
