Loved the breakfast here! Best bagel I’ve ever tried. Thanks
I've had the sourdough pancakes, croquet madame, Thai chicken sandwich, and roasted vegetable sandwich. The sourdough pancakes were amazing with a little bit of sourdough tang, slight sweetness, and a wonderfully developed flavor. Some of the best pancakes I've had and definitely unique. I thought the croquet madame was basically ham, cheese, and egg on good bread, not bad but nothing particularly special. The Thai chicken sandwich is a solid chicken breast with some spices and peanut sauce, it's decent. The roasted vegetable sandwich on olive bread is awesome! Both the roasted veggies themselves and the bread itself. Sandwiches are not massive, probably similar in size to what you might make at home. After reading the reviews I expected surly service but I found the lady and gentleman (presumably the owners) friendly enough.
I went there for breakfast just because of the homemade sourdough bread. It did not disappoint, got Rosemary olive oil and black olive. So good, worth every penny.
Great breakfast before heading back home. Rosemary sourdough was so good. Will always be a stop when I'm in the area
Delicious meal and wonderful service! I would definitely recommend the sourdough pancakes. The rest of my group ordered the egg sandwich and other dishes that were just as good 😊
Friendly owners, good amount of seating inside and outside. Very tasty breakfast sandwiches with 8 choices of sourdough bread.
Loved the food - the pancakes were so fluffy! Really enjoyed the food here :-) would love to go back!
Fantastic two egg breakfast sandwich on a dozen choices of fresh baked bread. Bacon was perfect. Was worth worth the stop for me. Really nice rustic Adirondack atmosphere inside.

The owners are the best and make the best breakfast and sandwiches in the area. 🧡
Literally anything you eat here will be great. The food is AWESOME
Get the mountain man, you can’t go wrong. Best breakfast in town.
Delicious! Quaint little mom and pop restaurant
Best Reuben I’ve ever had
great sandwiches and soups always have lunch there while in placid
Great selection of sandwiches and breads. Excellent soups.
Cozy little place with best bread and delicious lunch menu.
Great breakfast food and good service!
Great friendly service and delicious homemade food and breads
Great food prepared in house. Eat in or take out breakfast, lunch, or bread.
Great deli for sour dough fans with other options as well.
Best. French. Toast. Ever.
Terrific Sandwiches! Local Gem. Great find.
Great food! wonderful staff!
Friendly service. Very reasonable prices
Authentic breads from all over made right in the shop along with cookies, great salads & so much more. There are wonderful paintings of the adironacs on the walls painted by local painters for sale. The cliental are naive & very helpful.
Fresh, homemade sourdough bread in many varieties, delicious food, convenient, and not nearly as pricey as getting sandwichrs in town. Will definitely be back again and again!
Literally picked two sandwiches at random and they were amazing!!!! If you are in Lake Placid, you have to visit Saranac Sourdough! The bread was so delicious!!
We had flapjacks and sourdough pancakes, both were good. Though kids did not like the sourdough ones, they are not comfort food :)
Went for breakfast. It's seat yourself. Food is organic & farm fresh like no other place in lake placid. Practically locked the plate clean!
Dropped in here for a late breakfast. One of us had the sourdough pancakes which were epic. I went for one with New York rye which was also seriously good bread.
Very tasty, good breakfast before hiking, not madly expensive. Breakfast menu not up on the wall, so ask for it! Try the rye bread.
Best place ever ! Food is fresh and always Good. Consistency every time. Nothing compares in lake placid
Must stop here. Best bread anywhere. Every item executed perfectly. Wish I could take this restaurant home with me.
Great food, Great prices! Best place for fresh bread and lunch sandwiches.
Excellent breakfast. Get the home fries.
Excellent place for a hearty breakfast with a cozy diner vibe. We loved the Paysanne with cheddar cheese and olive bread, and the sourdough buckwheat pancakes. Also very good bang for your buck - it was about $25 for two of us and we were stuffed and had leftovers.
This place is the real deal! Great North Country deli with delicious sandwiches and lovely staff, and a homestyle feel that made us immediately comfortable. We recommend the reuben!
Just stopped by and had the Thai Chicken Breast sub, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The Thai Chicken was spicy but not overwhelming so, just enough to keep your mouth warm without drowning out the other wonderful flavors. The bread it delicious and fresh. My fiance had the Mediterranean Veggie and loved it! We will definitely be back next time we are in town.
We stopped here for lunch while touring Lake Placid. We try to only eat non processed foods, and this restaurant was perfect. From the homemade bread, to the meat prepared on site, the whole meal was satisfying and delicious. The sandwiches were tasty and filling, and the homemade soup was excellent. Our family will be returning to the area, and will eat here again. Date of visit: August 2018
Charming local place with great food. The pancakes were heavenly and absolutely perfect, the best I have had in a long time!
Consistently good food, since they opened their doors. This place always has delicious soups, homemade breads, salads and specials. The price is very reasonable and they even keep carafes of cold water in the cooler that you can help yourself to, or treat yourself to an Orangina or sparkling water of your choice. Yes, the owners don't trip over themselves when they talk with you, but they are consistent hardworking and I find them charming real folks...not fakes. A great value for the money. Try them for breakfast too, you won't be disappointed!
Enjoyed a fabulous breakfast! All five of our party tried something different and loved it. The real maple syrup was a nice touch. The farm fresh eggs were delicious. The kids books were fun to read while waiting for our food.
Have subscribed to Saranac Sourdough's bread delivery program -- best move I've ever made! When the two loaves appear on our doorstep once a week, I feel like a kid who's just been visited by Santa Claus. Incredibly fresh and delicious...sometimes still warm in the bag! Thank you, Eileen and John, for providing sunshine, smiles and old-fashioned goodness during this trying time !!
Delicious homade bread, sandwiches & salads. I had pork loin lettuce tomato mayo on whole wheat. Daughter had roast beef & cheddar on Italian bread. Also took breakfast to go: favorite was scrambled egg, bacon & pancake. Yum! Coming back!!
Best food in all of lake placid area and some of the best hosts! Great atmosphere, conversation, always a surprise or two. Don’t miss this place! I’m in lake placid five times a year and always stop in at least once per visit.
Delicious homemade food, highly recommended. If you out for lunch in town go to Saranac Sourdough, get any soup of the day , always good. And grilled vegetables sandwiches with Goat cheese on black olives bread, always delicious.
This place is so good! We went for breakfast and were very satisfied. Didn’t have crazy diner size portions and it was quality food. Also got sandwiches to go for lunch and they were just as good!
You know what I love about this place, it's authentic, you ordered a sub with tomato and Eileen slices it by hand, thick, the way you want it, there's a lot of good restaurants in placid but if you don't eat here you're missing out, I've been a summer resident of placid for almost 20 years and I look forward the most to grabbing a sandwich and a cold boylan grape soda, highly recommend, best place in town, try it, you'll be hooked like me
Always our breakfast stop when we are in Lake Placid! The sourdough pancakes are one of a kind and the croque madam is divine! My favorite breakfast in the world!
Picked up two loaves of sourdough bread. Whole grain and rosemary olive. Crunchy on the outside toothsome on the inside. Perfect for a nice cheese and a glass of wine. Also great with a good hummus. The lady at the counter treated us just fine. I'll be tempted to go back for a Cuban pork sandwich.
Rainy Sunday morning breakfast here did not disappoint! I’d heard great things about the sourdough breads and can now attest to the accuracy of those reviews. I got some eggs and home fries (sooo good) and had the Sesame Semolina as my toast. My friend had the Challah French Toast so I was able to sample both sweet and savory, which is going to make it that much harder to decide what to get the next time I go back!! This is a busy restaurant even though the couple who run it are hustling the whole time, so there can be a little bit of a wait. My advice is to settle in and enjoy good conversation with good friends and allow your appetite to heighten. You will be happy when your food arrives!!
I just visited Lake Placid for the first time in 20 years. All I could think about during the drive from Vermont was the beef hash breakfast from Saranac Sourdough. I was happy to see the same owners were still making magical soups, breakfasts, and sandwiches. I had a chicken rice soup which warmed my soul and the eggplant sandwich was INCREDIBLE. The place retained the same cozy charm from my previous visits. It warmed my heart to visit here again!

Cute little local joint for breakfast and lunch. Read the newspaper while sipping some coffee (self serve beverages) and some breakfast. Great homemade bread (loved the olive bread) & sandwiches. Bit of an old building that could use some more upkeep, but overall food was quality.

Great omelette. Open Sunday morning... wish it was open more often
great breakfast sandwiches! everything is made in house
Best pancakes I've ever had.
The Italian Muffaletta sandwich was excellent. Ordered it grilled panini-style on their semolina yeast bread rather than cold as listed on the menu.
Rustic spot with great breakfast on amazing site made breads. We always leave with an extra loaf or two for later. Good coffee too!
A great spot to get breakfast. Eveything on my plate was delicious. Definitely get yourself a loaf of bread while you're there!
I always stop here for lunch when I'm in town. The jerk chicken sandwich is one of my favorites. Just order what you want, worry about paying after you've had your fill.
Quaint, a little old and outdated feeling, but food was good.
Good solid breakfast location with bottomless coffee. Quaint indoor, would recommend and try again. Price is a bit high for the portion size. For example, their bagels were good, however, they were on the small size.
This is a local spot near Mirror Lake for sandwiches and breakfast food that has homemade sourdough. The namesake sourdough bread was just ok - it felt crumbly and flat. Surprisingly, I had better bread at almost all of the other places in the area. The portions were huge so come hungry. The service was not warm, and more no nonsense bordering on rude.
The woman taking orders was almost comically rude and the bagels were just ok. The place itself was really cool Though

Have mercy on the man who works there with the grumpy mean woman. He needs a major break.
Bread is excellent. Staff was not just unfriendly, but downright rude when we visited. We will not be returning.
We had some above-average sandwiches at Saranac sourdough. Two major downsides - we waited 45 minutes for them, and they were on the small side for their price. Not bad quality food, and the restaurant ambience is nice. But the service was on the weak side; we entertained ourselves watching the chaos behind the counter while the minutes ticked away. Seriously - 45 minutes for a couple BLTs and cheesesteak after the rush? As another user noted, the woman behind the counter has an attitude - mostly directed at the cooks behind her, but a couple customers got a dose of her snappishness as well.
Average food for average prices. We would have rated this higher if they hadn't gotten my order completely wrong, despite us being the only customers at the time.
The toast was burnt on the edges,, friends toast did not have a lot of eggs in it would not go there again
We look forward to getting sandwiches here while on vacation every year . This year was clearly a huge disappointment. Not only was the lady very crabby which has always been true, but the quality and value for price of the food has taken a nose dive! The bread was VERY stale and sandwiches most definitely 1/2 the size of previous years. I asked for a half sandwich and got a sandwich obviously made from the the first or second piece of the loaf, quite small very stale piece in the loaf, that I could barely bite into because it was so hard, and literally only 3 small bites!! Very sad our tradition ended on such a sour note. No quality control here, for sure. Off day, perhaps? Maybe, but I think we’ll be looking elsewhere from now on. Respect for customers sorely lacking here. This place needs an upgrade starting with quality control and polite, cordial customer service!
Bread was kinda dry. Soup was watery
I was having a great day until walking in and experiencing the lady at the front taking orders. Genuinely one of the most unpleasant and unfriendly people I've ever met in a customer facing role. You should really learn to treat the people who are supporting your business a lot better. I will not be back.

As many reviewers stated, the device was borderline rude from the lady at the register. As a home sourdough baker, the sourdough there is very flat, dense, under-proofed, and it way too salty. Overall it was a terrible experience.

The counter help was rude. And very short. We only asked for a high chair and they snapped at us. We left.
Food was mediocre at best and service was awful.
Rude owner! Not very clean inside 🤮
The lady at the cash was so rude. I wouldn’t go back just based on the service. It’s too bad cause the guy working in the back was nice as pie. Also the sourdough was awful. Dry and salty.
Food was not that good combined with small portions. We took ours to go as the interior could definitely use a cleaning, refreshening, and brightening up. I do not plan on going back.
Raisin bread was terrible, Italian bread tasted like it was made a week ago it’s almost as hard as my maple baseball bat, potato bread was good. Service, poor. Never going back.
Definitely agree with the other reviews about how rude the lady is. The bread was disappointingly stale.
I loved this place. The bread and sandwiches were excellent. However, I was there in October and it is now permanently closed.
After reading a lot of reviews, we spend a fortune in bread here, just to throw it out after the first bite. Stale old dry bread. Nothing good to say about that place.
not an african american friendly place owner kept starring at my black date like she was going to steal the silverware
I Should have looked at the reviews beforehand because I couldn’t agree more. The woman at the counter was so rude and dismissive while we ordered, we genuinely thought about leaving before we even got our food. But we stayed and got our food and I’d say it was mediocre at best. Nothing at all special. Rosemary sourdough was alright but for a place that specializes in sourdough and only has sourdough options, I would describe it as sub par. Do not go here.
Rude. Rude. Rude. Attitude beyond my wildest belief. We made it half way through our order before we had enough and walked out. We asked simple questions and were met with a sarcastic and demeaning response about what comes in the omelette. The inside was disgusting. Definitely not worth the stop!!!
Very poor experience. The lady working the register was extremely rude to us when we were ordering our food. Then our food came out, and we couldn’t even eat it. The eggs were way overdone and not edible, there were hard bone pieces in the sausage, and the sour dough wasn’t even good! The coffee was also lukewarm and self serve. We walked out still hungry and have to find somewhere new to eat now. Very disappointing.
It takes a special kind of bad for me to review a place online, and this was it. Got sandwiches to go, six different kinds, and all were inedible. Breads all stale and hard as a rock. Fillings tasted old. We threw the bread out and tried to satisfy our hunger on the meats inside. Didn't work. Been a long time since I felt a restuarant was a complete waste of money, but this was it. On top of it the woman behind the counter was being abusive to her staff and customers. Serious attitude problem. Do NOT go here.
Extremely, extremely rude to us. We are brown. Not to any of the nearly all white customers. When we brought this to the owner’s attention, rather than apologizing, he said “we’re just doing our job”. One young white woman before us left the place saying she was offended by the treatment of my wife that she witnessed. And incidentally, my pancakes were burnt, and the coffee was like convenience store coffee.
Used to love this place........not anymore. Placed a takeout order this morning & felt like we were just a problem for them. Very unfriendly last 2 times in. We ordered Adirondack flapjacks which were ok until I got to the bottom one which was black. Really not cool hideing a burnt pancake on the bottom of a stack. I guess they figured it was to go & who cares.
We will not return. Could be an amazing place but the owner was rude and while there were Interesting menu items, the sourdough bread was beyond dense. I love a dense bread, but this was a struggle to swallow.
The lady working at the front order area was an insufferable experience. She put the sour in sourdough😭!
I showed up at 2:20, after their 2pm closing, which I didn’t know until I went through the “Open” sign on the door and entered the store. No problem—a polite “I’m sorry—were closed” would have sent me on my way. Instead, a surprisingly rude “Can I help you?” Most businesses make me grieve if they go under due to COVID, etc. But others, eh...not so much.
I adore supporting small businesses, but the woman who I assume is the owner is horribly rude. She’s so blunt that it’s almost entertaining. The food is mediocre and the place itself is disgusting / needs a serious cleaning. With a name as cute as Saranac Sourdough, it certainly has potential. But her attitude surely will not generate repeat customers.
This was, without exaggeration, one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve ever had. The staff displayed a surprising lack of courtesy, bordering on outright rudeness. The restaurant itself felt neglected—unclean and poorly maintained. Most concerning, however, was the food: undercooked and clearly prepared without care or attention to detail. It’s rare to visit a place where not a single element feels redeemable, but unfortunately, this was one of those rare cases. I truly hope the owners takes this feedback to heart and consider a serious overhaul
Lady who took our order was extremely rude. Way over priced, paid 3.99 for a small bottle of juice and 10$ for a breakfast sandwich. As a local person, I will never be back. We always try to support and buy local but this will be my exception to the rule.
Online photos looked great and I love sourdough so my husband went along to be a good sport. Restaurant was empty except for woman working the register. She was NOT friendly! There were no lovely displays of sourdough as other photos have shown. The display case had something in it but was either foggy or dirty and it was undistinguishable. I chose the Italian eggplant and my husband asked for turkey on rye with yellow mustard. We were handed the bag and left. My sandwich fell apart as I picked it up and my husbands was so hard you couldve hammered a nail with it. Fortunately there is a really nice Hannaford grocery across the street so we were able to get edible food.
UPDATE: Why would I lie? I know people are hesitant to believe reviews. In this case, they should just see how the owner response to their negative reviews. Calling people a liar. Insulting people because their son needs the menu read to him. Insulting people who thought their pancakes were burned… This is the first negative review I’ve ever left anywhere and your reaction is proof that I did the right thing. Visiting from out of town, looked like a great place for breakfast. There was one other couple in the place. The lady acted like we were interrupting her day and was very rude. She wouldn’t answer any questions we had about the menu. She asked what kind of toast we wanted and i asked “which is the best?” And her answer was “That’s a matter of opinion.” We got our breakfast and it was not very good at all. The pancakes lacked any flavor. I got corned beef and it was nothing more than sliced deli meat fried on an egg. We ordered 3 loves of bread to take home and when asked for them the only response was “I don’t know, if we have some left I guess.” We tried the bread later that day and it was dense, flavorless, and stale as if it had been sitting out for a day and a half. If you are hungry and you see this place drive a half a block and you’ll see a McDonald’s, you are better off going there and getting their processed garbage than going to Saranac Sourdough and get treated like garbage! I’ve had better meals and friendlier service in the army eating out of mermite cans in the field. Never going back, would warn others to stay clear.
