My husband and I have been eating Ethiopian/Eritrean food for decades. We thought we had eaten the best, until we came here. Adulis exceeded all our wildest expectations. We got the meat platter for two and it came loaded with 2 types of chicken, shrimp, two beef options and salad and every single item was a 10 out of 10. The flavours were so elevated, each item perfectly seasoned and meat cooked to perfection. And the soft, pillowy injera was the perfect accompaniment. We truly can't wait to return!
Freshly squeezed orange juice! Yes please! The beef with carrot & the other beef dish (Zighni) were my favourite. Also I didn't expect the deserts to be good but they were! Honey cake all the way!
Such an amazing restaurant. Very much welcoming people. Lovely service. Everything top notch. Thanks .
Really great Eritrean food in a cozy atmosphere. I came here for lunch with a friend after climbing. For starters we shared hummus which was delicious. For main’s I had the mixed meat platter and he had a sizzling chicken dish. Both were very tasty. The spiced tea was nice too. Service was good, the lady was very kind & polite. Will definitely return.
Brilliant food quick service and great drinks. This place is the best of the best I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for good Eritrean and Ethiopian food this is the place for you.
INCREDIBLE food and experience. Never had anything like it in my life. Well done! Highly recommend the Honey Cocoa cake.
Visited this spot over the weekend and booked a table for 6pm. We were seated quickly and though it was not busy at the time, the atmosphere was still great. The interior is stunning, the food was generous in terms of the portion size. The price point was truly fair for the quality received. The flavours were there and all dishes were well seasoned. Nothing was overly seasoned or under. The staff were beyond exceptional and all in all, it was a truly memorable experience. I cannot recommend enough and will certainly return!
Great atmosphere very warm and cultural, great service all the ladies were so nice and such yummy food!!
Amazing food! Visited here as a group of 6 vegans and we loved it! A great vegan menu and we got a vegan combo for 4 between 4 of us (works out £15pp) and 2 shared hummus and plate for 1. Every 'curry' tasted delicious and was different from each other. The injera (bread) was lovely and we had free top ups when needed. Great service! For drinks they did not have plantbased milks for coffee so we ordered spiced tea and juice. No vegan desserts but staff said they were working on it. Location is very near Oval station. We went on a Monday night so it was quiet on arrival but still got busy after. I recommend to reserve your table at this popular restaurant!
I loved the vegan platter here! They were even able to modify it for me to be their most mild offerings for vegans (I’m pretty sensitive to hot/spicy dishes, Of which a lot of Ethiopian is!) I was very thankful they were also open early on Boxing Day, when I arrived after a long day of travel. Very friendly service too. I’ll definitely be back during my trip as I’m staying nearby!
Beautiful decor with many traditional items. Very clean Restaurant and bathrooms. The staff were very friendly with good service. The traditional tea is very refreshing which I had before my meal. The meal was delicious and the of my family enjoyed their meal too. A Great Restaurant and Beautiful atmosphere where we stayed up to 5 hours eating and having a wonderful time catching up with one another. Highly recommended - it caters for Vegan too!!!
Adulis is absolutely impeccable. For 2 hungry people, the veg/meat platter is a great deal.
First time experiencing Eritrean food, but it seemed to be similar to Ethiopian food I’ve had and I was highly pleased! The price was fantastic and came to less than £20 for a starter and main and tea, staff were attentive and happy to advise on what to have, food came quickly, was presented really well and each item has different flavours and textures, it was highly enjoyable and left feeling stuffed!! The tea made me incredibly sleepy. Would be happy to go back. Not sure if the injera is made fresh because it’s identical to other places I’ve eaten.
Nice Ethiopian/ Eritrean dishes, we tried the sharing platters. Cozy restaurant, good service. The coffee ceremony (see photo of lady roasting coffee beans) seemed interesting to watch - and smell!
Adulis is simply a mind-blowing experience. Very deserving of 5 stars. The vegan platter is immensely flavourful and a culinary delight to the senses. Also tried the coffee ceremony and it was a beautiful experience. I’m not much of a coffee lover, but this was a mindful experience with frankincense, coffee and popcorn. Sitting in the booth with the low table was comfortable and very relaxing. Will definitely be back!!
One of the best Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurants! Wherever I go around the world, as an Ethiopian I am always dissapointed with the location choice, cleanliness, and presentation - more over with the food of many Ethio-Eritrean establishments. But Adulis was different - it was well managed, and organized professionaly. We really enjoyed our experience at Adulis - Yeqeniley!
Amazing food!! We ordered the meat/veg mini combo for two and honey wine and we were absolutely stuffed!! I also couldn't pick a favorite dish from the assortment if you asked me as they all were tasty!
Lovely decor and great atmosphere - first time trying Eritrean food and was a great experience! Went on a Sunday afternoon so was a bit quiet and so was harder to find someone to take our order but after that was pretty smooth sailing.
Wow the vegan platter is amazing! I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’m not familiar with the food/culture, but it’s incredible. The atmosphere is really nice and laid back, and the incense burner is a lovely touch! Definitely recommend.
The two person meat platter was absolutely delicious. Uniquely African decor, music and food. Highly recommended!
Amazing authentic experience, eat with your fingers. Tasty platters for great value.
Absolutely splendid food. I have been desperate to find somewhere for authentic Eritrean and Ethiopian flavours, and Adulis really delivered. I thoroughly recommend getting one of the mixed platters so you get a taste of everything.
Great Eritrean restaurant, we loved the vegan selection and portions were (deceptively) very big! Particularly enjoyed the cabbage dish, shiro and spicy lentils. Would definitely return.
I went with a new friend to this wonderful restaurant during my latest visit to London (July 2018). It just so happened he was Ethiopian -i didn't know that- and I wanted Ethiopian food my last day😍 he said... i will take you to the best place... and he did! The food came fast, was extremely delicious, not greasy, very filling... we ate the traditional way of course feeding one another and the honey wine he seemed to really love. The ambiance was soooo relaxing, especially when they turned down the lights at about 10pm. We spent hours comfortably in this place and was NEVER rushed. I cant speak to the price as i never saw the bill 🤷🏾 but i would recommend highly this restaurant. It gives you a smalll dose of Mama Africa with it's traditional artifacts and painting and decor.
An absolute delight for the eyes and tongue - try the Naitsom veggie special, it's varieties of flavours and spices are a wonderful intro to Eritrean food, and don't be scared to use your hands! The baklawa are also delicious and the place has a great vibe and good service, an absolute must-try.
Absolutely delicious food. We get either the vegetarian or combo platter. They do seafood now too.
Delicious foods, tasty african coffee with nice atmosphere and friendly staff:) Briliant:) I highly recommend to visit for everyone:)
Great Eritrian Food. Fun to share with a group. Recommend the sharing platters to try a little bit of everything and the honey wine whose sweetness contrasts nicely with the savoury food. Portions are quite large. Atmosphere is relaxed.
Excellent and authentic food! We loved the decor and the friendly staff.
Amazing food, providing a different to usual dining experience. Food is served on one huge injira and you eat to the centre as a group!
We had the vegan platter for two and it was great, more than we could eat! A lovely place to share a meal.
Adulis is one of my favourite restaurants in London!! All the food is fresh, flavourful and delicious with lots of selection for all tastes. The injera is bouncy and sour and perfect with all the dishes. I recommend Adulis to everyone.
Been coming here for years! And your service has never been better please keep your new waitress. I had stopped coming a long time ago because of service the waitress were rude. I came last couple of weeks including last night the waitress was amazing She has dark hair and said she’s new. You also had a male a couple of weeks ago was amazing also and very friendly. please keep up the great service! Be back soon . I didn’t mention food cause it’s always amazing .
My favourite place to bring family/friends for occasions. Super filling portions + great food and staff
We ordered the seafood and vegetable platter for two, with two side dishes. As it was the first time eating at this restaurant, we shouldn’t have ordered any sides, the deal for two people is more than enough (very reasonably priced too). Delicious food and stunning atmosphere. I’m not sure I’ve eaten better fish. 10/10 would recommend. Really good honey wine also.
I really enjoyed this food. Everything was tasty and this Ethiopian bread is very unique. Be warned that the spice level is quite high. I hadn't eaten spicy in a while and some of the food was a bit too hot for me.
TLDR; An excellent place to try out Eritean food at a very reasonable price. It is worth a visit even if the menu is a little confusing. This was my first time trying Eritrean food and it did not disappoint. Food is served on a giant platter designed for sharing. This mean you get a good variety and is almost like a tasting menu. We had meat option for a meal for 4. It included 8 different dishes all served on a giant platter. This was accompanied by baskets of pancakes which is used to pick up and wrap the food from the sharing plate. The slow cooked lamb and shrimps were particularly delicious. Generally, all 8 dishes had strong flavours which goes perfectly well with the pancakes. Atmosphere wise, a lot of effort has gone into the decor. It is full of character and unique for sure. Holes in the wall are used as shelves, carving of messages in Eritrean on the walls, etc all adds to the vibe. Some times this felt a bit too much and almost feel like a theme park restaurant at times. The price is very reasonable and offers good value. The menu was long and can be a bit confusing so make sure you give it a good read before ordering. We averaged £30 per person with drinks and dessert. It was a lot of food too and we should probably have ordered less.
First thing first, it is just 5 minutes from oval tube station. East African restaurant, the Ambiance is quite vintage and very pleasant. The food is authentic, though I tried it for first time(ordered vegan). You find find good wine here. Good for couples and family both. Service is good. A little costly but value exceeds cost.
Amazing deco and service, strongly recommended! The sample tasting is delicious and they can adapted it to vegetarians. The dessert was the best part, very smart and creative
Very nice experience. We thought it was a small portion, but then you start eating and you can’t finish it. Food is tasty, although it has a lot of similarities with other cuisines I have tried so nothing out of the ordinary (at least in the meat lover plate we ordered). Overall experience is good! I will come again at some point. Heads up! - You are intended to eat with your hands unless you ask for cutlery :)
If you like injera and all that, it's good. It's probably not the best cuisine in the world, but it's nice for what it is. We had the mixed meat and veg for 2 and (with beers) it worked out at about £20 a head. No complaints. The only thing which was a let down was the staff. I've rarely seen a more lethargic bunch. The waitress announced that she forgot to order our starter and that they didn't have it anyway. Then she disappeared for pretty much the whole meal, leaving the guy at the bar to poke his head out and then look extremely inconvenienced to have to serve people. Not the first time it's been like this either. I still have to give it 4 stars for the food and the value though. There are few restaurants in London that do this kind of food, so I'd rather they stay open and train their staff.
Came in to try Eritrean food for the first time ever. It was quiet on a Saturday afternoon, with a nice laid back vibe. Wasn't pressured to order and the staff were very pleasant. Was a nice introduction, and a good experience. The platter for 2 will definitely fill you both up with leftovers. The meat was a little dry, but no real complaints overall.
Nice Eritrean food and the atmosphere is very African and loads of different races enjoying the meal. Clean and good customer service was a nice experience.
Delightful, everything was excellent, and even the perfect amount of injera! I was a solo diner and the platter for one was a great experience
Good food, but not the best I’ve had. The restaurant was decorated nicely and the menu has a lot of selection. The service was ok, they forgot a few things but it wasn’t the end of the world! I’d go back if I was in the area.
This was my first time trying Eritrean food , regardless of the taste some of the food was very over cooked and it shouldn’t go out to customers if it’s that bad especially if it’s meat , I didn’t feel the food was fresh and the taste was ok nothing really special about it . Some of the dishes was nice but generally speaking is normal . Staff are friendly and service was good
The foods itself were great. Full of flavour and great quality. The place is big and it seems clean. The foods quality, i would say 4 stars or even 5. However the service was very poor. We arrived at 6pm and were the first table. But our foods were served the last after 5 other tables were served. It seems like there was a table that was waitress’ friends. The waitress was very busy serving them and talking to that table… we also asked the waitress for more explanation & the recommendation as we were not too familiar with the dishes. She was not very helpful… and rushed us to make an order… we will go back again and hope the service would be improved!
The service was great and the restaurant was clean and nice but the food was plucks flavour. The zilzil tibs was not fresh and feels as if it was precooked and microwave heated. As someone who knows what an authentic East African food is, I'm extremely disappointed with the food. Compared to other East African restaurants that serve more authentic ethiopian/Eritrean food, this one extremely over priced. I wouldn't come back again.
The food was absolutely delicious! I order the veg/meet platter. It came full of the flavours you love. I was very happy with my serving. However, I wasnt extremely please with the service. In fact the service was nonexistent. The lady serving my table never came back to ask if I needed anything to drink. She walked past my table more than several times but she seemed uninterested with my table. Had she given great service or mediocre I would have been happy to give a better rating. This is definitely a place for you to get your food to go. If not, you should expect the slowest and mist unimpressive service possible.
I hate to be that person to give a very bad review to a restaurant but hear me out. I took a friend for them to try Ethiopian food, unfortunately they didnt like it- which is fine. I asked the waiter if we can have it take away. Note that we got the meat lover platter which had meat and fish ( see picture). I was so surprised when she came back with just one plastic box, which means she mixed all the meat and fish together which is not really respectful because why is the meat and fish separated in their platter but I have to eat it all mixed? Even more surprised when I got home and realised she also mixed the wraps with the sauces ( please see picture of the take away box) so now I have a mix a everything that I will not be able to eat- this is 40£ going to the garbage I am very upset. I wonder if a customer orders a take away menu from your restaurant would you serve them what you served me in the box? I am very disappointed and of course wont return- waste of money😫
