I have eaten here three times this year. The staff is very friendly and the food is always great. My favorite is the kottu roti, with mutton or fried chicken. I also enjoyed the lamprais and the wattalappam. FWIW, I have gotten their food spicy and I have found it is not as spicy as other reviewers say. I think it is well spiced if you enjoy flavorful food. If you are worried about spice, just get some lassi on the side!

I've never had Sri Lankan food before but this place is amazing! The food has a delightful flavor, is prepared fresh and fast! $15 for a full plate of delicious morsels

Very authentic food, great flavors! Definitely recommend the string hoppers and curry, wish there was more. Many options for curries, amazing dal curry and jack fruit curry! 👌

The best Sri Lankan food in Southern California. The chicken lamp rice was phenomenal and the customer service and hospitality were outstanding. If you're seeking authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, you have to visit Apey Kade (Our Store)! :)

Friendly service, lamp rice packet is tasty and well organized. Watalappan has a real authentic taste. There are many ceylon's village foods you can enjoy here.

Vegetarian Lumprais was delicious with the perfect level of spice. They were so friendly and gave great recommendations

An amazing place to get Sri Lankan food which is difficult to find in southern California. The owner's are friendly and treat you good. It's a bit of a whole in the wall, but when you're coming for good food, what else matters?

It's a family owned place, felt like home. Loved their String hopper chicken biriyani, it's spicy and tangy. Try their Fried chicken kottu roti meal...

Always delicious every time we visit! The owner is so helpful and friendly, and you get a great portion size for the price. Highly recommend!

This down-home spot makes the most authentic, make-your-nose-run spicy, sri lankan food ever. We've been coming here for over a decade, and the sweet couple who run the place remember us when we go in & are so loving towards our kids. There is nothing like good food served by wonderful people.

I recently dined at Apey Kade restaurant, and the experience was nothing short of delightful. From the warm ambiance to the rich aromas, every aspect captivated my senses. The menu offered a diverse array of authentic Sri Lankan dishes, each bursting with bold flavors and expertly prepared. The staff's hospitality added an extra layer of warmth to the overall experience. A hidden gem worth savoring!

Friendly family run restaurant. Excellent, authentic flavor. My mother had the string hoppers with fish curry and I had the beef kuthu. Personally I would adjust the amount of salt however I can say the perfect amount for the sri lankan pallet. Michlin star grade watalapam without any exaggeration. The flavor was perfectly balanced.

Best Sri Lankan restaurant in the valley. Worth the drive for their food. Love the fish curry, rice, string hoppers, eggplant, lentils and all the good things that fill the plate. Egg hoppers are my favorite side.

What an amazing place to try authentic Sri Lankan cuisine! Food was simply amazing, and the ambience and hospitality made me feel at home. Will return here with my family! If you can’t handle spicy food, ask for it to be less spicy!!

Amazing authentic Sri Lankan food! I absolutely recommend stopping by this gem. Awesome food from awesome people. I will absolutely be stopping by every time I am in the area. P.S. I see some negative reviews here complaining about the food being “too spicy”. It’s Sri Lankan food. You don’t go to a pizza place and complain that it’s “too cheesy”. If you don’t like spice or flavor go to McDonald’s or something :)

I had been wanting to try this place for a long time, and I'm so happy I finally got to. I'd never had Sri Lankan food, and it was different from anything I've ever had before. The flavors are indescribable, and incredible. Everything tasted fresh. My expectations were high, and they were still exceeded by a marathon. I don't have the words to describe how stunning the food was. I had the vegetable hopper. It was a plate of noodles and a spicy vegetable salad (? I'm not sure what it would be called but it was good), with three side dishes to put on the noodles- a coconut soup, a green-bean vegetable dish, and a squash curry. I went with my dad, and he ordered the same as I did, but his came with a dahl- like food instead of squash. I think it's really cool how you can order the same thing and still get some variation, while also being able to have confidence that everything is delicious- my dad and I shared our side dishes, so I can confirm that the dahl was amazing. The people running the restaurant were helpful and kind, and the inside of the restaurant while small was impeccably clean. The food was quite spicy, which I loved, but if you don't like spicy food you might not like it as much. The spice is different from other spicy foods that I've had, though, so if there's just a particular brand of spice that you dislike, you should still give this a try. Also, it's a vegetarian-friendly place, which is always lovely to find.

Ordered take out for my wife and I there and must say the food is amazing!! Reminds me of all the good street food gems in Sri Lanka !! We ordered mutton Kottu (might’ve been the best kottu I’ve had in my whole life ) and two orders of lumprais! It definitely hit the spot! Absolutely love this place and would definitely recommend checking this gem out in Tarzana ! The atmosphere and the service was beyond amazing!! - Virginia Nangi ❤️

We went to Apey Kade on Feb 3rd, 2021. Lalith and Neetha are very friendly, caring and efficient, and it's always a great pleasure to see and chat with them. We have placed a large order just on the previous day and everything was ready by this afternoon with no mistakes whatsoever. All the Sri Lankan dishes here are very authentic and delicious. We love string hoppers, roti, pittu and the matching curries like polos, mutton, kiri hodi, fish and many more. Then there are snacks like cutlets, patties, rolls, etc. which are great appetizers to the palate. We recommend their excellent food services for anyone who likes South Asian, particularly Sri Lankan, authentic food. We wish them all the very best and good luck.

Amazing authentic Sri Lankan food!! such a wide selection of items on the menu and everything is so delicious. I highly recommend the mango lassi with any meal :) I went for the first time last night and already came back for lunch today! Everything tastes just like it did growing up eating these meals at Sri Lankan family parties as a kid. Feels great supporting a family-owned business as well. Can't wait to come back!

The Lamparis is my favorite food here along with the kothu porotta. They have Puttu also here which is a Kerala food. Learned from having food here that there is a deep culinary connection with Kerala food and Sri Lankan food. There are only a few seats inside the restaurant to sit, but togo is their main service mode currently. The owner is the cook and is a very friendly person answering all my curious questions about the food and culture.

Most delicious cuisine, ever. Reasonable prices. Mega portions. Excellent customer Service. Mr. L is the best with a superb sense of humor. Authentic Sri Lankan food...but will adjust "heat" to customer request. Sri Lankan food is best. Apey Kade will expediently ship food across the country. I received my 15lb package (east coast) in two days. Carefully packed...frozen. Banana-leaf wrapped Beef Lampris, Lamb Lampris, rolls, Pattis, pittu, pol roti, beef curry. Just like from Amma's supervised kitchen. Well, we didn't make Lampris at home ..but Apey Kade's Lampris better than Green Cabin, Perera and Sons, The Fab, or the Take out counter Dutch Burgher Union.

If you are looking for authentic home made Sri Lankan food this is the place , it’s a small place so it’s difficult to accommodate large groups ,(most of the tables can only accommodate 2 or maximum 3), it qualifiers for a “ small hole in the wall gem” , also be patient if you are making large orders most of the food made to order and made fresh. While you are waiting it’s highly recommended to try their variety of ‘puffs’ and freshly squeezed lemonade Orange juice. The owners are very friendly polite and patiently explained me about every meal, highly recommended!!

I was recommended this place by a friend and it did not disappoint. I want to first shoutout the hospitality of the family, I had driven from Pasadena and due to traffic arrived just 10 minutes before closing. Despite this they still welcomed us in and served a wonderful meal. The food is very authentically Sri Lankan and quite spicy but very delicious. It is very comfort food and served in a cozy setting.

The food was soo good! I would say it has heavy indian influences and some mexican as well (maybe being in SoCal and ingredients available?). This is my first time having Sri Lankan food but I would definitely visit again. Ask for the spicy pastry, it was my favorite. If you're feeling adventurous, I would just tell the owner (I think this is run by the wife and husband) that you want to try everything and they will start bringing you food. It was incredible and my friend and I were stuffed to the brim. Total ended up being around $54 and if we ate like normal people, this could have fed 3 people comfortably for sure. Inside is fairly small, I would say maybe seats 10 but I went on a random weekday afternoon so it was pretty empty. Definitely giving the "hidden gems " vibes, I'm going to visit again next time I'm in the area.

I don't remember what I ordered, except the mango side, which blew my mind. First time trying Sri Lankan cuisine and we were very impressed! We love Indian and Nepali food so we wanted to try something else from South Asia - Apey Kade is the perfect place to introduce you to Sri Lankan food. Do not hesitate to do what we did when visiting: we told the man behind the counter (I assume he was the owner) that we’d never had Sri Lankan food before, and for him to give us his suggestions. He took care of us and gave us his picks for best items on the menu: chicken lamprais, beef string hoppers, hot tea and falooda! He was very kind and made our experience that much more enjoyable! All I can say is he knew what he was talking about…the food was awesome! So unique and different from other cuisines we’ve tried - I would highly recommend the lamprais or string hopper dishes! We would get them again!! And the rose falooda was excellent as well as the tea. Everything was a success. Give this wonderful local restaurant your business and prepare for a culinary experience you won’t soon forget!

Apey Kade means "My Shop" in Sri Lankan dialect. Although the place was small, the food was excellent, fresh and fulfilling to the hearts content. The coffee itself is a must try and so are the snacks and the main course. The rice pack wrapped in banana leaf is a must try. The owner was very patient and took time to explain to us the various menu items and how the items got their name. If you plan to visit, please keep in mind that the food is spicy and if your palette is not used to it, then you should ask the owner for alternatives. I for sure will definitely be going back to try the other items in their menu.

This restaurant is a gem. Travelled from far to eat hoppers. We ordered hopper meals with chicken, kottu roti with chicken, milk tea, faluda. All of the dishes were so tasty and delicious. I saw some raving reviews about Apey Kade in multiple articles ranking Valley restaurants so I had to give it a try. It was also my first time trying Sri Lankan cuisine. Let me tell you, this place is a hidden gem. You may be put off by it’s appearance at first. It looks like a hole in the wall with dim lighting. I wouldn’t recommend eating in the restaurant itself. Take it to go if you don’t live far. That said though, the food is outrageously tasty. The hooper, which resembled the flavor of a crape and shape of a bowl, paired perfectly with the broth of the stewed chicken. I could eat three bowls of that chicken and spiced broth it was that good! I also ordered some pastries that had a spicy onion flavor, a great addition to your meal. I promise you this place is worth a try. If you are unsure what to order, ask the nice couple behind the counter and they will help you. I can’t wait to try more things here in the future!

The spicing they use for the food at Apey Kade is amazing... I only wish they still had their buffet, but I still love their menu. They are culinary geniuses! The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food you get - in these days, food is just expensive, there's no way around it. So, you have to pick restaurants that are "less expensive" but won't short you on the portions. I am looking forward to trying some other of their menu items - I wish I could try them all or I'd probably get really fat!

Hole in the wall type place but clean, with seating upstairs. Would give it five stars but their food is super spicy. Also don't have the buffet which was really good pre-Covid. Always some delish pastries. Also take pre-orders - which can be made mild, Mango lassi and lamprais packets are good.

Update: Dec 2024 I stopped here on Christmas Day and it was too busy. My order was slightly messed up. Instead of dine in, they changed to carry out and we ended up without water and utensils. Since, we were traveling by car, we were carrying some extra plastic utensils and water that came in handy. Wow.. I have been trying to find a Sri Lankan restaurant for a while, so I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to check out this restaurant when I was passing by this area. I am glad that I did. Not only the food was delicious, the owners were super friendly. I tried vegetarian lamprias, kothumba roti and many other items..

Ubaya Medawela
Ubaya Medawela

Our order was quite a variety, mutton and chicken string hopper kottu, beef lamprais, beef godhamba roti, chicken kottu roti, battered chili stuffing, country chicken pastry, and chicken Chinese rolls. Unfortunately, the taste was somewhat bland and lacked the authentic Sri Lankan flavor we expected, especially the depth and aroma of traditional spices. This isn’t about spiciness or chili heat, but rather the rich, aromatic spice blend that defines true Sri Lankan cuisine. The pastry was the only item that stood out in terms of taste flavourful and enjoyable compared to the rest of the dishes. Both the pricing and flavor need definite improvement to appeal to discerning customers. The setting and cleanliness were not up to desirable standards. The dining area would benefit from an interior upgrade to better align with expectations and standards typically seen in the USA.

Not enough seats downstairs. Expensive. Served from Tupperware. Very limited menu. The best tasting item was the water, all you can drink. Should try to get better plates and condiments. The food was very spicy, but they lacked depth. The hopper freshly made by the owner lady was interesting because I never had them before.

Food is very very spicy. Food is made for Sri Lankans who can tolerate Spicy food. If they can cook the food without the spicy, there will be lot of other nationalities will want to buy. More business for the owner and all nationalities get to eat Sri Lankan food. It is a win, win situation for everyone. I hope the owner will consider.
