First time at Azay in Little Tokyo today, and somehow it felt like I’d been meaning to walk through those doors for years. One of those places that quietly lingers on your “must try” list until you finally give in. Azay was opened by chef Akira Hirose, who built the space around the kind of Japanese breakfast he grew up with. Thoughtful. Seasonal. The opposite of rushed. It’s a small, intimate restaurant in the heart of Little Tokyo, where the morning light hits just right and everything feels intentional. The Japanese breakfast was exactly what I hoped for and somehow better. A neat lacquered tray carrying grilled fish, delicate sides, miso soup, rice, pickles. Comforting in that quiet, steady way. Home cooked but precise. Balanced without trying too hard. Elegant, nourishing, and deeply satisfying without ever feeling heavy. It’s the kind of meal that doesn’t shout for attention. It simply exists with confidence. And sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Absolutely delicious japanese breakfast, a rare find in LA! We got the miso black cod option and the fish was marinated perfectly while still being moist and flaky. The portion isn't huge but it's enough to be a light to moderate sized breakfast that feels healthy and doesn't weigh you down. I would definitely come here again!

I ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. The patty was big and nicely firm, the sauce had great flavor, and the egg was cooked just right. The pickled shredded carrots were especially good and added a nice balance. For reference, the sauce was a little on the salty side and the rice slightly sticky, but overall the dish tasted great and I’d happily order it again.

Finally checked out Azay for brunch. Food was delicious and presentation was exactly as expected. Felt like we were back in Tokyo having breakfast at a hotel. Love the variety of dishes all seasoned delicately but still flavourful. The space is small to give the intimate feel. Definitely want to come back to try their dinner menu.

I love Japanese breakfasts for their variety, fresh flavors, and healthiness, and this place seamlessly blends that with a wonderful Japanese/French twist. I’ll definitely have to come back and try their dinner sometime. The restaurant is relatively small. We arrived right when they opened and were seated immediately, but it filled up quickly afterward. The service, while friendly, felt a bit disorganized—three different staff members tried to bring us the bill while we were still waiting for dessert, likely due to how busy they were.

We truly love everything about this place. My companion found it by searching for authentic Japanese cuisine and it was as authentic as it possibly could be. Intentionally I ordered Sukiyaki as that has always been one of my favorites. It was heart warming and delicious. Our waitress was extremely polite and knowledgeable. She paid attention to everything and we felt welcome. We certainly will go back there next time in LA.

Hands down the most enjoyable Japanese and French fusion food in town! The bento box shows authenticity and delicacy of Japanese cuisine at its best. The duck confit is pretty good with the couscous. The grapefruit tart, special dessert of the day, was very impressive too! It feels like we don’t get to find this kind of hearty food at this price anywhere else in LA! Reservation is highly recommended!

I really loved this place! Maybe my favorite in LA. I had some house barley tea, the matcha creme brulee and the chawanmushi. I went on a rainy Wednesday morning around 11:30am and there was no wait for a table. It got a lot more busy after that with small groups. I also know the owners and some of the servers participate in mutual aid work in the area, which makes it a business I would support. The best item is the creme brulee. I have dreams about it. it's that good lol

Absolutely incredible. I'm so glad we got a reservation for traditional Japanese breakfast! The service was kind, informative, and outstanding. I wish we were closer and could visit more often. Omg the Matcha Brulee!!!

This place is a gem! We love the vibe, love how the art on walls is uniquely related to the history and development of the restaurant. Philip is a delight, it meant so much to us that he shared the history of this family restaurant and what inspires its menu. It’s unassuming on the outside, which I really like about it. The inside is bright yet understated. In the world of Japanese tea ceremony, I would say this place has wabi-sabi. (Not a place to go if you expect a flashy scene.) Also the food is intentionally seasoned with complexity, subtlety and unexpected delights. We had dinner here and from the first bite everything was delicious. Their food is like an orchestra, with highlights and depth. Every detail of the meal was intentional. We started with a couple of appetizers: Crab and uni milk toast, and Sunchokes w/ dengaku miso. The crab and uni milk toast was rich and creamy on top with a crisp crunch of toasted artisan baguette below. Sunchokes were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The miso glaze added a savory highlight. We had Chilean sea bass and Jidori shio koji chicken. Both were excellent and cooked to the perfect doneness. The chicken thigh had passion fruit seeds which added a sweet surprise to balance the savory honey nut squash. The sea bass, which was one of their signature dishes, is served in a hand-painted dish reminiscent of a traditional Japanese kaiseki meal. It was cooked to tender and delicious perfection. Desserts were equally delicious and thoughtfully prepared. We had a soy milk panna cotta (big thanks from lactose-intolerant Asian) which was rich and creamy and topped with a pear granita, yum! The apple tarte had a traditional French crust, flaky and delicious. Service is excellent. We noticed they pulled extra staff out when serving our entrees so everyone at our table received their meals at the same time. Small detail, but it's these quiet details that really made us feel so well thought about. Their menu changes weekly. If we lived in the area we would definitely put this place on our regular rotation.

i love coming to Azay! it's the highlight of my week! highly recommend getting a reservation since there can be a wait on the weekends and it's a smaller dining area. the vibe is so cozy and uplifting and everything i've tried is incredibly delicious and fresh. i'd come every week if i could! can't wait until they open up dinner service again because i haven't tried it yet :)

Beautiful cozy place that gives authentic Japanese vibes with delicious traditional Japanese breakfast options. We got all three types - with Saba mackerel, miso cod and miso tofu and all three were devoured! If you’re a sweet tooth, make sure to check out matcha creme brûlée - YUM! A special gold star for service, the staff we’re very accommodating and we didn’t have to wait long to get our food, which was without a doubt delicious- will be back and bring more friends. Note to book ahead of time as the restaurant is small.

I had an amazing experience at Orochon Ramen. The restaurant is clean, cozy, and has a lively vibe. The ramen is delicious, with a broth that is rich, savory, and packed with flavor. The noodles are perfectly chewy, and the toppings are fresh and generous. Service was excellent; the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The portion sizes are very satisfying, making it worth the visit. Orochon Ramen is definitely one of my favorite ramen spots in LA, and I will be coming back again soon.

Orochon Ramen is a must-visit for true ramen lovers! 🍜 The broth is rich and flavorful, the noodles have the perfect bite, and the toppings are always fresh and satisfying. They’ve got spice levels for every taste—from mild to seriously fiery—so there’s something for everyone. The portions are generous, the service is fast and friendly, and the vibe is cozy yet energetic. If you’re craving authentic, comforting ramen, Orochon delivers every time.

I absolutely love this place! The food is always good, the service is amazing, and the atmosphere is just so nice and relaxing. This has become a top spot I go to for ramen. I've had other items on the menu which are good but I personally love their ramen. The ramen serving size is big and definitely worth your money! It leaves you wanting to come back and eat there again! I have order Ramen to go and the portion size is still big! When extra toppings or add on are asked, they don't hold back either. I've witnessed a customer unsure of the spice level for the ramen and the waitress was sweet to offer the customer to try a level the she was interested in and if she'd like to go a level up or down they would gladly add or change the ramen for her (free of charge or additional charges). They 100% give amazing customer service and satisfaction!

Someone recommended this place for lunch and let me say: I was wowed. It's hidden, it's small, the prices are great and I really enjoyed how customizable it was. It was 8 of us and the bill came to 120 granted only 6 got ramens and most stuck to water but the portions are huge! And they have a variety of spice levels to choose from.

My friend and I spend our afternoon at Orochon Ramen and we were blown away by their gyoza, it was not dry at all! We ordered a second helping and a side of takoyaki it was incredibly savory. My ramen was built to perfection as I choose the soy sauce broth as the base, it already had cha-shu, hard boiled egg, bell peppers, with extra tofu pieces. Not at all salty and the medium impact spice ignited my tastes buds.

Been coming here for a decade. I can recommend the Miso Ramen with a number 5 spice level. Honestly, it’s a great balance between spice and flavor. Any lower number spice level tends to overpower the flavor in my opinion. Service is great, you can hit a button to call the server - just like Japan. It’s a bit pricey compared to Ramen in Japan, but what are you gonna do? We’re not in Japan.

This was my first time trying Japanese home-style cuisine. I walked in around 11:30 a.m., and the wait time was about 15 minutes. The food was clean, simple, and thoughtfully portioned. The flavors were light and comforting, and the cute, delicate plating was especially appealing. The portion sizes were just right—I enjoyed it so much that I completely cleaned my plate, enough to make the chef smile. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal. I highly recommend the matcha tiramisu for dessert. It was a highlight of the experience.

In A Nutshell: -Azay is a cool spot to grab a Japanese breakfast. -It's basically a bento box that comes w/ a fresh tofu, tamago (Japanese omelet), miso soup, pickled veggies & you can also add some protein such as Maryland Soft-Shell Blue Crab or Black Cod -It's a very different style of breakfast you would normally eat in L.A., but something worth trying out b/c it's really good. -Their green tea/matcha creme brulee was really, really good & I highly recommended trying that too. Overall, this was a nice find & I didn't have to wait at all on a Sunday morning around 11:30 am.

I’ve gotten to eat here twice now and I’ve enjoyed myself! I think I would dock 1 star solely because after finishing my meal, I’m still hungry. Portions are not big at all. I’m also not someone that eats much, so that tells me something. However, I’ve enjoyed dining here for the vibe. The food is decent and I love japanese bfast. Come early because it does fill up and get busy.

Came here for the traditional Japanese Breakfast. It did not disappointment. The owner lady was so cute. She gave great recommendations and told me about the Momosoto that was left on my plate. I almost didn't eat it because I thought it was an olive but it turned out to be a delicious mountain peach found only in Japan. It was so good that I bought a bunch to take home on my flight to Seattle. I love Japanese food because I feel like it's very balanced. The breakfast had fish as the main thing but also multiple little side dishes that just complimented the whole meal. Outdoor seating was nice. Next time, I will have to try all the other entrees because I wanted to eat everything!

I called to see if they were able to accommodate a group of 8 as a walk in and they were able to let us get seated as long we we were out within an hour so the next group could be seated. It is a very small space indoors, but they have tables outdoors. There is a restroom for customers to use, and you can park on the street. Now, onto the food. Everything was good, but it was maybe too healthy for our liking. We left out wanting more things to eat, so we wandered around to find something else. I appreciated the fact that they were able to accommodate our group on short notice, and we were well prepared to leave within an hour. It was a bit annoying that the staff kept walking by us and looking at our table, so we just felt that much more pressured. They also didn't refill our waters until the end when they cleared our table. Food: 3.5/5 Service: 3.5/5 Accommodations: 4/5 Overall, there's plenty of places you can eat around LA, and I wouldn't have to come back here again.

Orochon Ramen is a well known ramen shop in the heart of Little Tokyo, serving a wide range of spicy levels and well known for their extremely spicy ramen variation. The staff are friendly, there isn't much seating indoors but there is seating outdoors. The food comes out quick and place is kept very cleanly. The ramen portions are large for the price, with a wide range of toppings and spices available to customize your ramen. We got a mild broth, which might've been a mistake since the broth didn't taste that good, but was still pretty good to try out. The noodles were cooked well, and the toppings went well with the noodles. If I go back I'd probably get a spicier broth.

Stopped by here after shopping awhile, we were seated and served pretty quickly. Ordering was simple, and you are given a giant serving for the price, which is great. The presentation was pretty messy though, but it was really filling and tasty. Definitely want to come back and try it with more toppings. 😋

Honestly very basic overpriced ramen, there was nothing special about it. You pay extra for every topping which is usually included. You can’t sub for chicken and I usually don’t eat pork. Their broth flavors were miso, salt, and soy but nothing was necessarily savory or something I would come back for. They added an extra ingredient which I didn’t ask for and then argued with me about removing it from my tab. I gave 3 stars as the place was clean and quiet place to eat

Dom Ku

There’s a lot of ramen shops in Little Tokyo and since Orochon is tucked away at the top of Weller Court, they have to do something to draw in customers. Their specialty is spice, with 9 levels of spiciness. They don’t really advertise special combos or topping sets, rather incorporate spice level as part of the order. They also have a Wall of Bravery for those challenging the top 2 spice levels! We ordered the miso ramen, shoyu ramen, and a plate of takoyaki. Each of their ramen broths have a pork base as well, so this means more calories, sodium, and flavor. They also have a vegetable base as well. Their bowls don’t include cha shu, rather sliced pork belly which is very mid. Their broths are rich and there’s a good amount of noodles, but lots of bean sprouts. The takoyaki has a crispy exterior and a mushy interior. I think the meal is average at an average price, but I would recommend the other ramen shops unless you’re going for the spice.

Not impressed at all. I expected authentic ramen. It had no taste. Supposed to be spicy the lower the number goes so I ordered a miso spicy level 4. I asked for a 3 after the 4 was so bland. Still did not like it. No taste and it took a while to get it. Not worth the price. Staff didn't offer refills we had to ask. Before eating I went to use the restroom and omg please give it attention. The owner needs to paint over the graffiti and clean the urine on the wall. The restroom was really dirty and it smelled like a bar restroom!

Worse food experience in little Tokyo. I was looking forward for an authentic breakfast experience but after a 1 1/2 hr wait it was more of a lunch. As the menu states there is a French Japanese fusion, we decided to order the kakuni omurice, Nagoya hitsumabushi. The omurice was an over cooked egg omelet over a rice drenched in ketchup. The egg was so dry and a major disappointment. The eel bowl was just disappointing because the white rice was wet and not cooked properly. The eel was a bit fishy, and the broth served with it was cold. I’ve had better unagi at its price point. Duck confit was a very salty flavor and not juicy. The couscous was dried along with stale bread. The veggies were served soggy. Not only was the food disappointing and lacked quality, but waited long for a water refill or even hot water for the tea. Service and food experience was so poor, I would definitely not recommend. For a true Japanese experience Gardena and Torrance in South Bay has so many hidden gems at a lower cost. Save yourself time and visit other nearby spots in little Tokyo that offers better food like sushi gen.

The noodle soup wasn’t very good. When it was time to pay, they held up their tablets but wouldn’t let me see the bill. Instead, they told me orally how much I needed to pay, without mentioning the service charge. However, they did explicitly remind me that I had to give a 15% tip. I did as they asked and then requested a receipt, only to find that it listed just two bowls of noodles. They had already charged a service fee and now were also asking for a tip, which I found unreasonable. I won’t visit there again in the future, and I must make everyone aware of this. They are not honest or transparent in the way they charge the service fee.

This place was okay, my rating is low for this restaurant because the server spilled ramen broth on me and some got on the floor as well. You’d think they would compensate me, but they just said sorry and didn’t clean up the broth from the floor, which I though was a safety hazard.

My favorite spot to dine in just lately customer service with some employees have been a problem went there with a group of friends waiting time was about an hour which is totally understandable once seated we had a great waitress but then shift switch and we got this chubby light skin African American who rushed us off we where still eating due to us being a big group the food took about 15/20 minutes we burly had 15 minutes eating when he gave us the tab and to go plates totally sucks since they do charge the 10/15 percent on your tab will different be taking take out from now on or looking for a place closer to home since it is. 30-50 minute drive totally not worth it
