My Fiance and me have been going to Jack Frys for our anniversary for the past 4 years. There has never been a time where we were disappointed. We recently celebrated six years together on Oct 14 and our waiter Will was fantastic. He was very professional when i had ordered something that they had ran out of that night and he even took off my fiances drink he ended up not liking. What topped off the night was when he brought out a bunt cake for us and it even had a candle for our anniversary. If you are looking for a nice date night restaurant i definitely recommend Jack Frys.
I can see why New York Times has this as the first place to eat in its “36 hours in Louisville“ article. Stephanie-the owner- made sure everyone was happy. I can see why it wins Best in Louisville awards repeatedly.
Excellent service with delicious and beautifully presented food. We had the heirloom tomatoes over latkes for an appetizer, seafood pasta, pork chop, and bourbon short ribs for main course. Who knew there was such good seafood in Louisville! Definitely worth your time for lunch or dinner. Everything was fabulous.
This was such an enchanting experience. It came as a recommendation for bartender at another establishment. We changed our reservation at Reveal to come to Jack Fry's and it did not disappoint!! We will definitely be back when we are in Louisville next. What a wonderful way to celebrate my 50th birthday!!!
Overall, this was a good experience. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive, and the flavors met my expectations for a restaurant of this caliber. There were two small hiccups: my husband’s steak was overcooked (we decided to go with it and continue enjoying our meal), and the strawberry cobbler, while flavorful, was too runny and lacked the richness we were hoping for in the sauce. Still, the taste of the cobbler itself was wonderful. All in all, a positive dining experience.
What an amazing find! The pork chop and beef shortribs did not disappoint. The waitstaff and manager were very attentive and interactive. What a storied place and cool bar. We will definitely tell others and be back!
One of the jewels of Louisville, Jack Fry’s did not disappoint. The staff is sharp and attentive. They know the menu inside and out and are happy to make recommendations. We had escargots appetizers and the sea bass as well as the filet. It was one of the best meals we’ve had this year. Reservations are required- so plan ahead and book early. This place is a must for any occasion.
My fiancé and I had a lovely lunch. The atmosphere is cozy, welcoming, relaxed with historical pictures on the walls throughout. The service was excellent, attentive but not overwhelming, and the cuisine was delicious.
First time visiting Jack Fry's and it didn't disappoint. We started with drinks which immediately struck us both as some of the best cocktails we've ever enjoyed. Next, we enjoyed salads--both were good, but I would recommend the brie salad. For entrees we enjoyed the roasted chicken and the salmon. Both were very fresh, well plated, and delicious. The chicken plate immediately evoked a great nostalgia for holiday gatherings. For dessert we enjoyed the cinnamon pear cheesecake and the chocolate cake. Both were very rich, and flavors exceeded our expectations. The cheesecake was vibrant with fall aromas and colors. The inside of the restaurant itself is perhaps dated, but evokes a nostalgia for a bygone era. It's also crowded, but with a lively positive energy accompanied by a live pianist.
This is THE restaurant to go to if you are in Louisville and want to have an elegant dining experience. It is the closest experience you will get to a Michelin Star restaurant here in Louisville. In terms of service, all staff are incredible and respectful. They have a coat check, they clean your table and collect your silverware between the appetizers and entrees, and they always have women go first and are served first. In terms of drinks, they have wonderful curated cocktails. My personal favorite drink is a desert cocktail called A Night At The Movies. Moving to appetizers, the single handedly best item on the menu is the spicy fried oysters. When someone asks me what is one thing I could eat for the rest of my life, it’s these spicy fried oysters. The other appetizers are good too, but you can’t skip out on these oysters. For the salads, the Brie Salad is the second best thing on the menu. It is phenomenal, don’t skip it!! For entrees, I have tried a few: the chicken, the steak, the pork chop and other seasonal dishes, but the best one by far in my opinion is the Short Rib. It falls apart so easily and pairs so well with the goat cheese mashed potatoes. My second favorite is the pork chop. And last but not least, we have desserts. Usually I am too full for dessert, but the cobbler is a great choice and pair it with the toasted marshmallow ice cream. It’s made by the lovely Louisville Cream and you can only get it at Jack Fry’s. Long story short, if I knew I was dying and could choose my last meal, I think it would be the following from Jack Fry’s: the spicy fried oysters, Brie salad, braised short rib, the cobbler with ice cream and a final drink, the Night At The Movies.
Iconic. 91 years and still iconic. We celebrated our anniversary tonight and had the absolute most memorable night! This will now forever be the place we celebrate, us. Great food and atmosphere! The service was amazing and the drinks tasted great! We did not make a reservation and ate at the bar, I’m so glad we did because we had the best bartender! Piano music made the place all that more special, can’t wait to visit again. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I had my birthday here with a table of 7. Everything was amazing. The escargot and fried oysters were my favorite apps, but the burrata and heirloom tomatoes were good too. I got the short ribs and was very happy with my choice. You know it's good when everyone goes quiet for a second to eat haha. And I got a complimentary vanilla cake with a candle. I appreciate you Jack Fry's!
I always enjoy a meal at Jack Fry’s . The menu is seasonal, and there are chef specials (so ask before ordering). Cocktails are always perfect. For appetisers we ordered the Agnolotti and the shrimp & grits. Very good. I had the Duck Confit cavatelli, my wife the burger, my daughter the roasted chicken and her boyfriend the pork shank. Everyone was very pleased with their choices; I’d recommend any of these. There was a concern concerning the roasted chicken and it was addressed immediately. For dessert we had the blueberry cobbler and sherbet. The cobbler changes regularly (based on availability of fruit); if you enjoy cobbler you may want to order it early and they will put it aside for you (it’s not uncommon for it to sell out). Best to call a head and make a reservation.
I think this is legit my top 2 restaurants in Louisville! LOVED the food, LOVED the staff, LOVED the piano, and LOVED the low lit vibes. Dress casual. Warm.... did I mention the food was seasoned WELL?! Sorry, but very rare I go to a restaurant and everything is seasoned to perfection. Already recommended this place to friends. A hidden gem in my opinion ✨️
Small, local spot with a ton of history and character. Call ahead and make a reservation because it's a popular place. Great for a date night. Food was incredible. Ribeye is the way to go here. The appetizers are spectacular. Service was solid. Definitely worth a visit!
If you are visiting Louisville and can only visit one restaurant, then I feel really bad for you. Louisville is a great foodie city. Make plans for a weekend trip. It’s worth it! Jack Fry’s is a reservation restaurant whose walls scream at loud from characters and people that made this city. Overlooking our booth was jack himself. The booths are private, and you would think you are the only one there, but piano music in the background in addition to other patron’s mingling voices makes an atmosphere very enjoyable. The food is great too. All of our orders were delicious. That is something you would expect with a restaurant brandishing $$$ next to its name. We didn’t have any cocktails but Katy Perry was visiting couple of nights before for exactly that reason. In summary, if you are looking for a restaurant that is unique to the city, operating since 1933, you will find it in this Higlands neighborhood. Helpful things to note, small but sufficient parking on the side of the building, but street parking is plentiful as well. No outdoor seating and some vegetarian options.
Definitely one of the best meals in Louisville. The pork chop was incredibly tender, juicy and delicious. I ordered the bourbon peach cobbler for dessert and it is one of the best desserts I’ve had. Very courteous staff and easy going ambiance but you definitely feel you are in a place that has stood the test of time.
Food and service are excellent! It's loud and crowded but it's a good vibe.
Steeped in classic American steakhouse style and tradition of comfort, ambiance and exceptional service. At the moment of being seated you are confident a highly satisfying dining experience at Jack Fry’s is ahead. Top quality fresh ingredients skillfully prepared are served here. On my recent visit I enjoyed perfectly grilled Beef Tenderloin. Particularly outstanding was Beet Caprese Salad I ordered to go with entree that included crispy fingerling potatoes and grilled asparagus. Looking like a work of art the colorful salad burst with fresh, cool, complex flavors that were delicious. Also enjoyed terrific Sazerac, rustic bread, black coffee, espresso and Creme Carmel. Wine I selected was okay, not great. Cost in my opinion is reasonable, commensurate to quality of ingredients, cooking skill and great service.
Clair, the hostess, is just absolutely amazing. She’s so sweet and pretty and gave the best customer service!
Excellent food experience, we sampled most of the appetizers and the scallops were to die for, just like the squid arabiatta and the shrimp and grits. In terms of technically executing their menu, I am 100% satisfied with every dish. Their Mac n cheese had beef cheek in it, which is more than anyone can hope for, an indication that their menu is designed with love and care. And their blueberry cobbler...speechless. Needless to say their service was exceptional as well, the restaurant itself had an old-school allure to it. One of the best food experiences of my life.
The food and service was wonderful. We were first thinking we needed to abandon our reservation we had for a few months. But Jesse the GM made accommodations for us and moved us around in his schedule. The food was wonderful, the service outstanding. Our waiter even made a young persons drink at the table several times to ensure it was perfect and “not so strong”. It was a great experience!!
One of the oldest place in Louisville, one can have best dine-in experience with warm ambience. Service is excellent and so does food. They serve limited collection bourbon whisky, also have large drinks menu. For food I just try their spicy fried oysters, apart from Salad, but those oysters were too good, which quotes me to assume other food items on their menu would be of same standards. One must visit just to experience their ambience and try limited collection of bourbon whisky.
The bourbon glazed surf and turf strip steak was incredible. Please make it a menu regular. Probably one of the best strip steaks I've ever had. Great food, excellent service, and cool vibe. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town.
11/10 recommend! This was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. Do yourself a favor and try it if you haven’t yet
My husband and I brought our out of town guests here. We had the lamb chops (me, pictured), filet (pictured), swordfish, and short rib among us, along with salads, wine, ice cream, and chocolate bomb. Everything was amazing. The lamb chop meal was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. 😋 Nothing beats the excellent service here, plus live piano music!
Absolutely exquisite! We came here last week for a date night with my parents, and the atmosphere was exceptional, the service was exquisite, and the food was absolutely top-tier! I ended up getting the lamb and potatoes, along with one of the crème brûlée desserts, and a couple cocktails, and everything was absolutely exceptional! The bull came to $175 for two, so know you’re coming here to spend. But when the food is this good, the price is not a factor. My tradition, when eating out at nice restaurants is to order every dessert at the end of the meal, but I was just so stuffed from the main course I couldn’t! But I will definitely be back to try out more desserts!
This is my favorite restaurant when I visit Louisville. Great ambience and history. The food and service are top notch. I recommend the world's best pork chop (pictured). So delicious! They have a great beer and wine selection. I am particularly fond of the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. They will top your apple cobbler with their homemade ice cream of the day if you save room. Yum!
Service was top notch. Showed up at our reservation time and was immediately sat, unlike other places where you wait past your reservation time. My only complaint would be the table and both being smaller than I would prefer. Definitely felt cramped throughout the meal.
Delish food and wonderful atmosphere, with both the ambiance of a steakhouse and the intimacy of a neighborhood hole in the wall. You can tell there's a great history in the place just by looking at the photos on the walls. Our server, Jamie, recommended amazing dishes and was especially accommodating to our needs.
The food was outstanding. 2nd time there and it was just a good as the first time. The staff was top notch as well. My only complaint which is not really a complaint is that the seating is very crowded. The tables are about as close as they can get to each other while allowing minimal room to sit. I understand they have a small space that they are trying to maximize. This is not a deal-breaker for visiting though. Very much worth the visit.
Best wine, food, service you could ask for! The staff was friendly, classically professional, and went above and beyond their duties to ensure our dinner was the best. I even asked the waitstaff for a wine recommendation - they delivered and I discovered a new wine that is now my “must have”! The atmosphere is great for having a special occasion dinner or catching up with friends, and I go here for business dinners as well. Top of my list for all occasions!
No review necessary. Eat here. Steak great. Gangster vibe. Amazing steak. As long as you can afford it, don't think, just order steak.
First time here. Bourbon braised short rib was fantastic. Service was attentive and speedy. Atmosphere gave off a 1930's Chicago vibe where you wouldn't be surprised if some business outside of food service was being taken care of in the back room. Excellent vibe, will be back for sure.
My personal favorite in the city. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff are friendly and lacking the pretentiousness this place qualifies for but the best part…every item on the menu. I haven’t made it through the entire menu yet but it’s a life goal. This is where the locals go for fine dining and some of the most in the know out of towners are eating also.
Truly a first-class dining experience. Food and service should both get 10 stars. Must try the shrimp and grits starter, then enjoy anything the chefs prepare off of the main menu - you won't be disappointed!
Only thing I have to recommend is that they upgrade their ice for cocktails. For a cocktail like an old fashion or a Negroni at a high end place, it is a little disappointing to see it served with ice chips (which water it down too quickly). It seems like pretty low hanging fruit to get some big ice cubes for the cocktails. Otherwise we had what felt like a perfect meal for my husband’s birthday dinner. Every dish was flawlessly executed. There wasn’t anything super creative or unexpected in the dishes we ordered, but everything was cooked so well. Service was what you would expect from a high end establishment. Very attentive. On top of refills, generous with bread, excellent timing as far as flow of the meal. While this is a fancy dinner out, I feel like the prices are very fair and reasonable for the quality of the experience you’re getting here. Appetizer was $20. Salads were $13. The entrees ranged from $20 for a hamburger to $72 for their most expensive entree. I also appreciated that they wished my husband happy birthday multiple times and brought out a special dessert for him. I will definitely be back for other special occasions.
Jack Fry's is a true Louisville classic. It’s classy and timeless, and works just as perfectly for a casual meal at the bar as it does for an intimate date, a business lunch, or a group celebration. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. The staff is professional, competent, and strikes that rare balance of being warm and familiar without ever feeling too casual or too stiff. At the bar and during lunch service, be sure to see Vanessa. Stephanie, the owner, is very hands-on and present. She’s there every day, greets guests, gets to know you, and makes you feel like family — something you don’t find often anymore. The food is outstanding across the board. The burger is an absolute must, and honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu — tutti bene. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, not overdone, and the pairing recommendations are spot-on. Just trust them. And if you’re in the mood for a cocktail or martini, it will be perfect. You simply can’t spend time in Louisville — or live here — without putting Jack Fry’s on your must-see list or keeping it in regular rotation. Highly recommended.
Great experience all around. My daughter had the Jack’s burger and it was perfection. My wife had the filet and loved it. I ordered the cioppino which was very good, though the portion was a little small. The crabmeat arancini was excellent. Jamie was our waiter and he was outstanding. He’s a 23-year restaurant veteran and it really showed. The new GM, Eric, stopped by a few times to check in and did it in a way that felt genuine and not over the top. Eric is all class. We’ll definitely be back.
Came for the 1st time and loved everything. Excellent service, food was 5 stars, and fabulous jazzy type atmosphere. Definitely plan in advance and make reservations (or you may get lucky and have seats available at bar). Had the salmon and it was scrumptious
Food and server were great. Food was slow to come out though and dining r room felt cramped.
Little too dark of an atmosphere for me personally in the middle of the afternoon- but the Cobb Salad with additional grilled chicken was very good. I went out of my norm and ordered the daily chef's soup choice, and I didn't even taste it because it had mushrooms in it (it wasn't on the menu, our waitress just told us). They were very accommodating in taking it back and encouraging me to try something else. Should've went with my norm-delicious!
Had an excellent dinner here tonight for this first visit with a Louisville staple. We were there with the restaurant club from Cooking at the Cottage where we pick a different restaurant each month to try.
I loved this place. My son insisted that we visit Jack Fry's. The wait staff was WONDERFUL!! The food was fabulous. This was a great night out with our family. My only complaint would be we were by a very large group which were being very loud. Okay I get that but then the restaurant started playing live music which was absolutely wonderful however, which then made the table talk even louder. We couldn't hear each other at our small table. Do definitely a place to visit!
The meals we gad were delicious, the dessert, excellent. 4 star instead of 5 is because the meal was a little too salty to me. Personal opinion. Customer service superb! Especially the General manager.
The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was delicious. I enjoyed the salmon. It's a great place to dine but not it you're going to catch up with a friend. It's so loud you can't hear yourself think. Other than that I would recommend.
Just reserve early on weekends. I tried all weekend and finally got lucky Sunday. Smaller restaurant with small off street parking. I like the low lighting low music so it’s easy to chat over the meal. Ordered the shrimp and grits and it was an interesting take on the dish. Chefs special was literally chefs kiss. The food is good but not what you’ll get elsewhere. The drinks were amazing and came out rather quickly. Served was very attentive and knowledge as well.
Salmon tasty but seemed to get salty. Service had issues ask to wait at bar I guess we couldn't order was ignored. Waitress was good slow returning to us. 130 lunch was loud.
Jack Fry's is a Louisville institution. We had never been there before but had heard a lot about it. It was just okay. Service was adequate but nothing special. We got the meatball appetizer which came with three meatballs. We had one each and left the third. Neither of us thought they were very good. I had the pistachio-encrusted salmon over risotto. The salmon was cooked properly. The pistachio coating was okay but not great. The risotto was under seasoned and bland. I am kind of a risotto freak and I get it pretty much everywhere I go. This would definitely be at the very low end of risotto I would expect in a nice restaurant. I hardly ate any of it. My wife got the braised short ribs. They were excellent. They came with goat cheese mashed potatoes that were also very good. The broccolini came out cold but they brought her replacement broccolini that was hot right away. It's the kind of dish you expect from a high-end restaurant. We got the Apple & Pair Napoleon as well as the Dark Chocolate Bombe for dessert. The Bombe was good but the Napoleon was special... Excellent. We enjoyed both desserts. I'm not sure we'd go back but we had a reasonably good meal.
We were so excited to visit this restaurant! The menu options looked amazing. Upon arrival, we were told that our 6 party reservation was noted as a 3 party. Half our table sat across the room and couldn't have dinner together! The menu was much more limited than online. The food was an hour plus wait. This is fine dining and priced accordingly. I expected a better experience. Each plate was delicious and prepared beautifully.
