Man did I luck up on this GEM. Was craving noodles, any type. I searched high and low, a lot of condenders out there. But the dice roll brought me here. An damn this place didn't disappoint. I was seated quickly, the hostess was very polite. The ordering process was simple enough. The food was DELICIOUS. I hade the wide noodles and man I was happy. It was a quiet spot. I definitely will be heading back, i have to try dem spicy pig ears.
New Lanzhou Ramen spot in San Mateo. I ordered the Original Lanzhou Handpulled Noodles Soup with beef and added a popcorn chicken. I usually order dry noodles so my expectations weren't too high when ordering the soup, however, I thought the medium noodles and broth were an excellent pair to the sliced beef, I thought there could have been a little more beef but no complaints. I probably wouldn't order the popcorn chicken again, extremely salty. Overall, I am glad I tried Ox 9 and I would like to come back to try some of their dry noodles. I'm still giving this place 5 stars because they had great customer service and the noodles tasted authentic. Few things to note about handpulled noodle sizes: Medium (most thick, just a bit smaller than Udon noodles Regular (most commonly found at Lanzhou noodle restarants) Small (most thin, about the same size as the instant ramen packages) If you found my review helpful, follow my local guide profile to see my experiences with other destinations!
As someone who has lived in Mainland China for 12 years, I can confidently say that this place is pretty damn close to the real deal. For those who don’t know, Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles (兰州拉面 lánzhōu lāmiàn) are an exceedingly popular street food across Mainland China. Shops can be found in every city all across the country, and sometimes multiple shops can be found on the same street, even right next to each other. Chinese people absolutely love this tasty dish and I myself had my fair share of it growing up in the country. Tasting the noodle broth here was an instant nostalgia trip back to the dozens of hole-in-the-wall Lanzhou hand-pulled noodle shops I frequented in my childhood. Seriously, this place is legit. It is getting easier and easier nowadays to find truly authentic Mainland Chinese food and I am so happy that this popular Chinese dish is finally getting its recognition here in the United States. Aside from the Lanzhou noodles, the spicy wontons and pig ears were also delicious.
I visited Ox 9 on a Saturday for lunch with a few friends, and we managed to snag a table just before the lunch rush! It's located on the end of B street near the Caltrain, so it's not too crazy of a location in downtown San Mateo. Parking is not too bad on this side compared to the rest. The restaurant is tiny so prepare to get cozy! We were at a table in the back corner so it was a little cramped, but we were okay. The tables are also small so 5 bowls of noodles on the table definitely left no open table space. 😅 For placing orders, I believe you need to scan the QR code at your table, and order on their website (or app?). That being said, I ordered the Braised Beef with Chinese Pickles, with the regular round noodles. These noodles are phenomenal! I guess that's the best part about eating fresh handmade noodles. Not only are the noodles good, but the soup tastes great, and it comes with plenty of braised beef. This is a great dish for fellow braised beef noodle lovers. The price is also not bad for a huge bowl of noodles ($17). I also ordered the Juicy Pork Burger, and it was also amazing. The bread is super soft, just lightly toasted, and the pork was perfectly seasoned and juicy just as it is named. To add extra flavor, rip a piece of the burger (bun + meat) and dip it in your noodle soup. Just. 😗👌🏻 The popcorn chicken deserves an honorable mention. The flavor is great, and has a good amount of moisture. The only downside is that it's a bit expensive for popcorn chicken ($11!). All in all, I would definitely come back for more noodles and the pork burger.
Family decided to try this place out. Why? Hand pulled noodles that's why. We arrived before noon so there was a wait list. Put our name on the list and waited maybe 20 mins on a Saturday so not bad. You have to scan QR code with your smart phone to order. We ordered house soup noodle with regular round noodles, sorry no picture of that cause my dad started chowing when it arrived, popcorn chicken, big plate chicken, chili noodle with added beef, beef chow mein, she's Sichuan beef brisket noodles with small flat noodles. My parents liked the house soup noodles the best. I really enjoyed my beef brisket soup noodle. You can definitely tell they are hand pulled noodles. My son loved the chow mein. Sister liked her chili noodles. The big plate chicken had the most kick spice wise. We had to get scissors to cut the noodles cause they were so long. I was surprised cause the whole family enjoyed all the food, usually my parents dont agree with my sister and I. To sum up great food and service, will be back to try other stuff.
Some places are known for their noodles and everything else just falls flat but not this place!!! Noodles were perf texture, broth was rich and flavorful, and ingredients were fresh. We had the crispy lamb, spicy wonton, and beef soup and enjoyed every bite of every dish. This place is 10/10!
Looking for authentic hand pulled noodles? Look no further because this spot will win your heart! With the Lanzhou Handpulled Noodles being their most well-known item, they were named to be one of the Top Ten Noodles in China. Their noodles are all hand-made and their beef broth is slow cooked daily. Went on a Sunday around 2pm thinking the line would die down, but I was wrong. There were probably 10-15 parties waiting ahead of us. You put your name down on the waiting list. After waiting 30ish minutes, we finally got seated. You don't have to wait for a server to order. You place your order directly by scanning the QR code and they will bring out the food when it's ready (5-10 mins). Portion size are relatively large. It looks small because the bowl is big but it was enough to fill me up. The chili oil is really good and fragrant. Although it looks super red, it wasn't really spicy. Love how they offer 6 different noodle types from small, regular, medium round to small, large, belt flat. Seating inside was limited. Maybe around 10-14 tables. 「 O R D E R E D 」 1. Lanzhou Handpulled Noodle Soup ($14.48) | 5/5 - My new favorite noodle soup! If you're torn on what to get on the menu, highly recommend ordering this which is their most ordered and well-known item! We ordered it with regular round noodles. They were al dent and had the perfect chewy texture. Comes with slices of beef, radish, chives, cilantro, chili oil (not too spicy). Soup was super clean. 2. Stewed Lamb Noodle Soup ($15.48) | 4.5/5 - Similar to the Lanzhou Noodle Soup but with cubes of lamb and without chili oil. Soup was clean but slightly saltier than the Lanzhou one. Lamb was tender. 3. Chili Oil w/ Wide Noodles ($13.48) | 5/5 - I read many mixed reviews about this dish but yo this is probably my most favorite item on the menu so far. Super flavorful. Again, looks spicy, but it's not. This is coming from someone who can't take spice too well. Wide noodles are more on the chewy side which I like. It was fun to eat but can get a little messy. The length of one noodle is almost as tall as me LOL. 4. Crispy Lamb Chops ($23.98) | 5/5 - I was a little hesitant to order this but no regrets. Very tender. Flavors dancing in your mouth. Meat falls right off the bone. Pairs well with the noodles. 5. Spicy Pig Ears ($9.98) | 5/5 - Can't go wrong with this dish. Slightly numbing. Crunchy. Thin. Good portion size. Every bite becomes more addicting. Overall, this place lives up to its hype. Everything tasted clean and fresh. Service was nice and prompt. Will be back! Street parking was available so that's definitely a plus!
Amazing hand pulled noodles. We tried this restaurant a couple of times, and the noodles are very tasty. My baby is one picky eater, yet he ate all the noodles in his bowl. That means the food here is pretty good 😊 The restaurant is quite small, so the seating is a little cramped. The biggest table can seat up to 6 people, and that is way in the back of the restaurant, and there’s only 1 6-people table. 3-4 people in a group takes longer waiting time than people come as a couple or alone. If you come in bigger groups, your waiting time is longer as the waiter have to wait and reset the tables for you.
If you’re craving for some delicious homemade noodles, then this is the place for you. Ox 9 has a wide range of noodles that you can choose for your noodle soup. The broth is also flavorful and compliments the noodles nicely. I highly recommend trying the Sichuan braised beef if you’re looking for an extra kick!
Their 4th location in the Bay Area - loved that they now have one in San Mateo so it’s closer to us. Love their noodles and dishes, especially spicy wontons, beef slices, all their dumplings and their various buns dishes, etc. They are popular and have a line during busy times but line goes fast - we don’t have to wait long! We put our names down and walk around San Mateo downtown area which is always fun. Before we know it, we get a text that our table is ready. Love this place!
I got the regular round and the widest flat noodles. They're not the chewy kind and are a bit on the softer side. They give you a good amount of noodles but the meat wise they were thin and only a few pieces. The spice level is not adjustable and it's mild at most. So it's not spicy but they do have chili oil on the side. The broth is quite flavorful but not overwhelmingly strong with msg. You have to use the tablet to wait list and don't get discouraged by the numbers on there. It's not the number in line but the number of people served. So if you're number 40, it doesn't mean you're 40 in line. Count the numbers on the front page and that's the actual number of people in line. The wait was around 15 mins at 6 so it was not bad at all.
Have been here a few times throughout the year and they never disappoint! The noodles are very long but absolutely delicious! I am a big fan of the large flat ones. Their broth is a perfect blend of spice and salt and their pork is always cooked perfectly and falls right off the bone! They have very fast service and every worker I’ve encountered has been friendly. They bring our food out within 10 minutes of ordering, even on busy weekends.
The best handpulled noodles in the area. Great texture and flavors. All fhe food came out fresh and delicious. Will definitely come back to try more items. The spicy level is definitely tolerable. Super friendly staff and fast service.
Great spot for authentic Northwestern Chinese noodles. I loved how many noodle options there were, from thin rounds to wide, flat cuts, and even tofu noodles, all springy and fresh. The beef noodle soup was flavorful, and the chili oil noodles had a nice kick. The pig ear and tofu skin appetizers were tasty too.
Nice little place in a area with blocked off street. The *1 chili* spicy beef with dried noodles wasn’t that spicy but perfect for me. The pickles in the pictures are 3x the size, we just happened to eat two portions before snapping a photo.
Very cool to watch them pull the fresh noodles right in front of you! Portions are huge and can easily be split between 2 people. We tried the beef noodle soup and buns which were both delicious. It was pretty busy when we went and had to wait for a table to open up. Ordered food through a QR code.
Awesome spot for soups, especially if you're tired of Pho. You can watch the handpulled noodles being made. Seating was a tad bit tight. Food was great, definitely met/exceeded the 4.6 on Google Maps. I got the Cumin Beef Burger (regular noodles) and Braised Beef Stew with added egg + extra meat. Very pleased when I left and yes, I will be back!
They had a long line even when we visited at 2pm! The server were overwhelmed and it was a bit chaotic. The environment was okay, typically Chinese fast food vibe. Their noodle was hand pull freshly! Very cool! The lamb noodle was perfect and everything else we ordered was authentic. Their price were cheap too. Definitely recommended! Be aware they don’t take Amex or Discover 😉
Fabulous selection of hand-pulled noodle dishes, ranging from flat to round to skinny. Noodle soup dishes were all well seasoned with generous portions, and the cucumbers and popcorn chicken were also good. Try the beef stew and if you like spicy, make sure to try the home-made hot sauce available on each table!
Delicious food. Very authentic Chinese noodle and freshly made. We got the following: Lanzhou hand-pulled noodle, mung bean noodles with garlic salt, spicy ground pork dry noodles, popcorn chicken And did family style. Food came out fast
Absolute gem of a restaurant, which explains why there are wait times outside Thursday - Sunday evenings. Their classic Lanzhou noodle soup is delicious but pretty much any of their options have a place in my heart. Get their wide, house made noodles and the broth is not only flavorful, but also filled with a good amount of protein and vegetables. Staff are very friendly and they have both digital and physical menus!

Chewy noodles, yummy broth, good variety of veg in the veggie soup. Liked the beef broth option without the pieces of meat. Lots of cilantro which have the broth a light, clean taste. The fried bread sticks are as decadent as they sound and could get addicting. The red chili flakes are more like Korean gochugaru and have warmth and flavor, but not intense spice. I ate my noodles and some veg for dinner and had enough soup to eat for brunch the next day. I scraped all the fried garlic and chili bits from the fried bread plate into my takeaway, and it made it quite different.
Amazing variety of noodles. So chewy and delicious. Highlights were the cumin lamb, shrimp dumplings and the knife cut noodles w spicy ground pork. Also the popcorn chicken was addicting. Been visiting family in San Mateo for years but haven’t tried this place before. An instant classic and favorite. We will be back.

Had the Briased Beef Stew Noodle. Both the broth & beef were very tasty. Most of the beef were tender, though couple of pieces were tough. Ordered it with the wide hand-pulled noodles, which was nice. Would have welcomed a bit more chewiness. Waitlist, menu & ordering are all via online system.
Waited about half an hour on a Saturday around 1pm, but once we got in, very easy to place orders on the phone, and food arrived fast. They also provide really cute kids bowls. We tried three different noodles, all pretty good, and despite the pepper flakes they were surprisingly not at all spicy. Popcorn chicken unfortunately was a little spicy, wouldn't have ordered it for the kids if we knew that.
New Lanzhou hand pulled restaurant in town. It is pretty good but a bit bland. The pulled noodle is chewy in a good way. Wish both have stronger flavor. Overall ok. We visited again on 6/25 and we dine in It was busy during lunch hour. You put your name on waitlust and will get a text message when your table is ready. You order from your phone. The restaurant is not that large but well organized. Lovevthecdevoration on the wall. We ordered lanzhou hand pulled noodle (spicy) and appetizer sliced beef. The noodle we chose was flat one. You can see the noodle type on the wall. It is nice to see the hand pulled noodle being prepared by the chef on the clear glass window. The order was ready pretty quickly. I like the clear soup. I finished it to the last drop. The dluced beef has a bit of mala kick. One thing that could be better is only allowing people to stand on one side of the area in front of the noodle chef. When we are leaving, people just stand left and right and leave no space for us to walk through. No one seems to care. They should limit how many people are allowed to stand and wait inside.
I like that I can choose the type of noodles ranging from a round noodle to a flat one, from thin to thick to wide. The noodles have a great chew, good mouth- feel, bouncy and just QQ. The soups are delicious, clean, clear but still feels light. Very substantial bowl of noodles soup. All 3 of us had some to take home with us. There's a bit of history on the wall dating back to 600BC when the Chinese made the first noodle.
A nice noodle/dumpling shop. 🍜 There are 6 noodle thicknesses to choose from. Picking the right one very well be a matter of experimentation. The noodle I ordered came out very fast. 🌶️ The spiciness is toned down, managible even for someone like me who doesn't eat a lot of spicy food. 💧 They give you a cup of water when you sit down, which is nice for spicy/hot food so you don't need to necessarily order a drink. ☹️ Unfortunately when I asked for WiFi, the staff didn't know the password. 🇨🇳 服务员说汉语 ♻️ Non-reuseable chopsticks are provided. Recommending bring your own chopsticks.
Good noodle soup. The noodles have a very chewy in a good way texture with a lite gluten-wheat flavor. Soup broth base is solid for the dishes we had. Line to get in is crazy, plan accordingly. Also feels odd that you can’t get hot tea at this place. It’s definitely set up to serve as many people As possible and get you on your way
If you’re looking for fresh hand pulled noodles, this is perfect place. You can choose the noodles type round or flat with different thickness. We ordered Lanzhou Hand-pulled noodle, chili oil noodles, cold noodles with chicken slices & sesame sauce and stewed lamb noodle soup. Food and portions were tasty and great. Will try different dishes next time!
I had the Braised Beef Stew Noodle Soup. The beef was incredibly tender, and the seasoning was spot-on. The rich broth, simmered to perfection, carried delightful fragrances. Paired with chewy noodles, it was a comforting delight. The pork ear appetizer surprised my taste buds—in a good way! It was flavorful, well-seasoned, and a unique addition to the meal. Definitely worth trying.
Highly recommend their pork intestine noodle soup! It's a new item on their menu and it's quite delicious. They also give a good amount of noodles unlike most places. Not a lot of adjustments when ordering.. you can choose the type/size of noodles but can't remove items like cilantro or scallions if you hate those. Spiciness is pretty much set too.
This noodle soup was good! The portions were perfect, I felt full but not stuffed. The staff were all really friendly too. Definitely a place I'd go back to. recommend giving it a try! The try of noodles i tried ... Knife cut noodles are good but hand cut so some parts are thicker then other so the texture will be different Thick flat cut is good consistent texture , ate with dry style Small flat cut is good consistent texture in noodles soup, softer as it soaks Update. You get seated then order from a QR code from your own phone. They still come and take your payment because still need tips. Other then that not much service. Point to where you sit , food comes and check.
High recommend this place! The line was quite long to get seated because it was that popular! Below are pictures of the spicy wonton, Braised beef stew noodles (regular round, belt flat), and last but not least the mung bean noodles with garlic sauce. Overall 10/10 for the food! 💜
This place was worth the wait! We tried the cucumber salad appetizer, the steamed pork buns and each had a noodle soup. I got the pork short ribs and everyone else in my group had the traditional beef. Next time I'll go with the beef too. The handmade noodles were so chewy and fresh, and we loved how you could select which style of noodle shape you wanted (round, flat, etc). Don't come here expecting any fancy service - you order via QR code from your phone and basically have to get up and go ask if you need anything like a water refill or more napkins. But the food is delicious!!
Great spot for hand pulled noodles. Place gets packed but people Move through quickly. Quick attentive service. Noodles have a great chew and multiple noodle options. Highly Recommend the beef soup with pickled vegetables and spicy wontons. Soup broth well balanced. Chili oil on every table to adjust spiciness to desired heat. Spicy wontons had amazing balance of sour, sweet and spicy with a thin chewy wrapper. Vegetable stir fry noodles were as advertised. Menu Could benefit from larger vegetarian options.

Service was quick and helpful. We got the braised beef soup with pickles and the belt flat noodles, which was a hearty soup with a bit of tartness from the pickled greens. The belt flat noodles were nice and chewy- and filling. We also got the Northwestern lamb soup noodle dish - a lighter soup with less noodles comparatively, but still just as flavorful. The pork buns were also pretty good, with a decent amount of meat. The popcorn chicken was very well seasoned and could be eaten as is without any sauces, which is saying a lot since we love our sauces. Wish I came here sooner.

Authentic beef ramen (yes, ramen is originated from China and literally means pulled noodle if you're wondering) at very reasonable price. Beef is well flavoured and tendered. Ramen/noodle is pretty good. Biggest disappointment is the broth, which unfortunately left you with the classic MSG thirst - a shortcut that takes away the soul of the ramen, and hence a modest 3/5 rating.
For the hype it was so so, the taste is not any better than other noodles/dumpling stores. It's just has the noodles made “infront” of you. Glass window view of the kitchen. Which I guess is a nice touch cause you can already see how the chefs are handling the food. Flavour wise it ok as mentioned. We travel across the bridge to try and it not bad. We did wait A very very long time but because we came specifically for this we endured it or else we would just went somewhere else. It a small narrow space inside, so it doesn't fit many people especially not big parties. Maybe couple, 1/2 people would be best to come here or else it be too cramped. It also located slight on the "outskirts" of downtown. Service wasn't much since they were so busy.
Food is decent. You can 100% sure the noodles are handmade; however both bowls we got the noodles texture are on the hard side, feels like you can cook it abit longer. Soup was good but the beef is a bit overcook and chewy like eating a rubber. Portion is decent. Overall pretty decent hand pull noodle in the area.
Too much hype for a noodle house. Don’t come here if you got a party of 5 or more, you’ll be waiting for a while because of the limited space. The restaurant is really really small, 15 tables max and half of them are 2 seaters. @ $20 a person, there are plenty other restaurants near by.

First time here. There’s very little meat in the noodle or the dumplings (all chives). Flavor is just okay, it wasn’t a wow. Side dishes were not tasty… esp the cold beef slices, flavorless. Probably won’t come back.
