Best Mexican in the East Bay! Great service. Staff is attentive but not hovering over you. Bean dip is delicious. Best homemade tamales! The menu is extensive, If someone in your group doesn't care for Mexican, ( and they're your friend, why? :) they have delicious burgers and salads. Kid friendly. Happy hour is CHEAP and the margaritas are very good. Very clean too.

For fresh Mexican, this is the place to go! Everyone is super nice, always greeted at the door, quick service, friendly people. I love their salsa, very fresh, and always served with warm chips and a bean dip with a spicy green salsa. They have daily specials and happy hour. Nice bar with good drinks, they offer a lot of options.

Today we had a Delightful lunch upstairs on the balcony. We tried the Chicken Ranchero Dinner Special, that came highly recommend by a staff member and it was delicious! 😋 the perfect meal for my husband and I to share, especially, after finishing a basket of chips with bean dip & two types of salsa. And all of this wonderful food washed down with refreshing, quality Margaritas!

Best mex in Martinez. We started coming here when they were the only ones with the Corona Cures (take home margarietas), stepped up to the family meal take out specials, and now we come for those leasurly sunday afternoon strolls.

Stopped for the dinner, the owner is amazingly welcoming and checks in to make sure the service, food is matched to the expectation. The restaurant has huge sitting area with the very inviting and vibrant atmosphere, staffs are very friendly, the food satisfies the taste buds. Over all good value for the time and money.

The dish I ordered, the crispy carnitas dinner, was absolutely delicious. The carnitas were perfectly crispy and tender served with flavorful rice, creamy guacamole, and rich refried beans. Every bite was a delicious. The service was equally impressive. Nicki, my server, was attentive and made sure I had everything I needed throughout my meal. Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners and the general manager, Harry, who went out of his way to ensure everything was perfect. The restaurant has a wonderful, family-oriented atmosphere, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with loved ones. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming, and it's the perfect spot to watch Giants games ! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good dining experience in Martinez.

Good food, great service, lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed a quiet lunch here on Sunday afternoon before a short hike.

Very good food, generous portions, and friendly waitstaff. Always pretty busy but they manage it well and in the rare case that food comes a bit slower the quality and service is worth it. Plus they have chips with this incredible bean dip and salsa that they bring out immediately after you get there for you to enjoy while you wait. And seriously guys, this bean dip is so good that sometimes you want the food to take longer! This restaurant also offers seating outside year round on the sidewalk patio outside and this place is in such a prime spot on Main Street. Right in the middle of everything and front row seats to picturesque Martinez.

We had a waiter that was good with the kids . Our 1 year old ran up to him and hugged his legs and he was so good with her she got to hold him and he sat with her for a bit it was nice to see them get along that way . Very lovely establishment.

I was very pleased with the food and the service at this local restaurant. I had a Combination plate with a beef taco, a tamale and chicken enchilada with red sauce which was all very good. I also had a blue lagoon mixed drink which I enjoyed. The bean dip that was included with the chips and dip was delicious.

This has been a family favorite since it took over this location from another restaurant. The food is always excellent. The drinks are stiff and the staff is the reason for the Fifth Star. If you have birthday or anniversary and want to celebrate it with 20 of you closest friends, the is an excellent place. They will set you up in a private spot. If you have a reception or event that needs more space, they have a large room next door where they can cater, set up a bar and your guests go through a buffet line.

We recently spent our 4th of July at La Tapatia Mexican Restaurant in Martinez, CA, and it was the perfect choice. The place was lively and welcoming, and even though it was a holiday, the service was fast and the food came out hot and fresh. If you're looking for real authentic Mexican food, this is the spot. My daughter had the crispy taco, and she normally doesn't like tacos, so when she said it was really good, I knew it had to be special. Crunchy corn tortillas, seasoned meat, fresh cheese, and salsa that hit with just the right kick. We shared the shrimp burrito, and it was packed with flavor. Pro tip: ask for fresh avocado instead of guacamole - you'll thank me later. The shrimp, sour cream, and spices brought the whole thing together. Everyone at our table loved their meals. We were in Downtown Martinez and decided to try El Tapatio after hearing great things about it. Even though the restaurant was busy due to a youth baseball tournament and the Farmers Market, the service was excellent, and the timing was spot on. We sat at the bar and ordered a well-priced pitcher of margaritas. For food, we had the fajitas and the trio burrito—both were delicious! We’ll definitely be back. I frequent this really tasty restaurant. They have the best chips, salsa, and bean dip that I've had at any Mexican restaurant in Contra Costa. Same for the margarita...it's amazing! People are always shocked when they have those items, and that's before ordering food from the menu! I usually have the chicken taquitos or the crunchy chicken tacos, which me satisfied every single time. The crew is really nice and friendly. Definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants to visit.

We sat in their outside seating section and service was excellent. Was not loud or rowdy. Just perfect all over. The Mexican Painkiller cocktail was bomb too. We will be back!

Changed ownership recently according to hearsay in town. Decent hacienda style Mexican food preceeded by above average chips salsa and bean dip. I prefer the burritos and tacos but haven't had a bad meal yet. Service can be slow but always nice. Have patio seating and a bar.

The food is very good, Mexican American with several traditional dishes. The service is a bit slower than I'd like but courteous. The prices are average. The downtown area is pleasant. There were quite a few persons passing by who appeared to be homeless.

Excellent food, but even more excellent service. The crew here is the nicest, most attentive and fastest to accommodate at any restaurant I've been to. We always go there with a huge group and they always have a table ready. Everyone is so nice, just amazing. Plus the beans are just right, covered with meltey cheese, not too soupy and not too thick, perfect!

Service is hit and miss. Some times it’s amazing and sometimes it is lacking. Food is good if you know what to get. For example, Trio Burrito is the best burrito I have ever had. The combo taco enchilada plate and such, not very good. All meals comes with chips salsa and bean dip. It’s my go to in the area of my residence.

I can't rave enough about the veggie fajitas. They are SO delicious & packed with flavor. Great serving sizes so I always get 2 meals out of it. A little on the pricey end but oh so worth it.

Very nice people! I had veggie fajitas and loved them. The taco salads were not a big hit because they had so little in them. Ceviche and soup got the nod. Pitcher of margaritas...well...made the meal.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant is clean and bright. I like that I can get not only a vegetarian meal, but vegan as well. The menu is varied and the prices are very reasonable. The portions are ample. Aside from traditional Mexican soft drinks they offer that stand variety as well as bier and wine. Well worth a visit.

We stopped here for dinner and margaritas before an overnight train ride. We had great service and a nice meal! I had a chile rellenos and and a fish taco. Both were delicious! The margaritas are also tasty! Great spot for dinner and convenient for the train station.

This review is strictly for the catering side of La Tapatia. They catered my wedding on July 10th of this year. Overall my guests loved the food and the dinner service went well. But we did have issues with the servers. They did an excellent job serving and picking up the plates they provided. However, when it came to picking up dessert plates, they were very pushy. Dessert was meant to be enjoyed from the moment it opened at 6:30 to the rest of the party at 9pm. SEVERAL times they tried taking guests' dessert plates away while they were dancing, and were asked SEVERAL times to please leave it. Later when no one was paying attention they came back to throw it away after having been told 2-3 times to leave it. Towards the end of the night we had guests helping with the final clean up and they had set aside my dessert along with my husband's. Along with other guests who wanted to take their dessert home. They set it down all together and had turned around to do something. When they turned back around the servers had thrown everyone's dessert out. This was very upsetting. My husband and I were so full and with the chaos just weren't in the mood to eat. We had purposely saved that dessert to enjoy later that night and now we can't even say that we tasted our dessert table. This is food we had paid for, the guests were allowed to take it home and ultimately it was OUR responsibility as the renters to make sure everything was picked up. (This is outlined in the agreement we had to sign with our venue). A lot of dessert we paid for was thrown out not just at that moment but throughout the night. Another guest later told me that she had just finished taking her last bite of dessert, and before she could take the fork out of her mouth her plate was taken away. Lastly, a guest had complained that she had left her table to mingle with someone for 5 mins. When she got back her wine had been thrown out by the servers. Again dinner service/clean up was great, but the servers were throwing out food and drinks they did not have the right to throw out. For starters, unlike dinner, dessert was meant to be enjoyed the entire night. And most importantly, the dessert and drinks were not provided by La Tapatia so it shouldn't have been touched. I sent an email regarding all of these issues to the event coordinator at La Tapatia about 2 weeks ago. To ensure this experience is not repeated with other couples and never got a response. So I'm letting other couples know myself.

Not as good as some Mexican food I have had. I almost always get enchilada Verde at any Mexican food restaurant, because I love the combo dish, and it gives me a good idea of how it compares at other places. The service and vibe was very good, however the food has much to be desired.

Chips & salsa were good. Took a long time to come take our orders. Margaritas very weak. Had chimi's beef had to much chili powder for our taste, but the chicken was very good.

I have been here many times over the 30+ years I've lived in Martinez. I've seen it through many changes, but now I find it's gotten overppriced, and the food is mediocre. The service this last visit was not very good and had 3 different wait people. I'm disappointed at what it's become.

The food was tasty. The server got a few things wrong with our order, which are significant for one, not everyone eats pork! I ordered a chicken tamale, I received a pork tamale and I told the server and he challenged me. Really, like I don't know what I'm eating? Oh my gosh, I can't express enough that not all people eat PIG, PORK, HAM, SAUSAGE, BACON! I know I can count on options in Cali, not so much in a small town.

The hostess is not great. She seated me, then immediately said in to her microphone, "1 on 27." She could have done that away from my table. Especially because the restaurant was not crowded (only 4 tables seated, including me). The enchiladas verde were quite salty. I won't be back.

Great food, but the prices are a little too much for a large gathering. The trio burrito was very tasty, and their salsa is top-notch. Chimichangas were a hit, and the relleno's weren't too spicy.

I have enjoyed La Tapatia in the past and would love to rate this place higher, but it is a little bit inconsistent for me. While we were not greeted with a smile, which always bothers me in the hospitality world, service was attentive and fast. We like the the chips and salsa trio they serve at the table. ON THIS VISIT, the Margaritas were not very good and tasted watered down.. i has the "Cadillac " Margarita and my wife had the Watermelon. Neither of us enjoyed our drinks and did not want to order another. The food is pretty good and everything had a good flavor. WHEN this place is at their best, Ken Sarna recommends La Tapatia, but on this might they only earned three stars from me.

I love their food and that deserves 5 stars but unfortunately I have to say that the bartender doesn't know what she's doing. :( Not sure she's a "real bartender" or certified or whatever cuz I had to send my drink back 3 times and still didn't get it right and she had attitude about it. Can't remember her name but she's a short, stout brunette! We've been going here for years and never had a bad drink until now. Overheard her telling another gentleman at the bar complaining about management or the owner, that he was dumb or stupid or something along those lines, just not professional at all. Try to avoid ordering cocktails if she's working :( we won't order drinks if she's working. otherwise the food is wonderful!

Not many choices to dine downtown, but we choose to come to this one often.

The food was underwhelming. We had to ask for salt. The salsa was tomato saucy or hot with no flavor. The dishes were just okay across the board with all 10 of our meals. We had to send the margarita back twice... tasted like someone added lime to jalapeno water. The watermelon shots were warm and tasted like medicine. Not the best mexican food experience.

1st time there but disappointed in food quality. The carne asada fajitas were tough and chewy. The entree was 75% peppers and onions. Rice was basic. The restaurant was filling up quick and hope the other customers got better results. I will try again but have a feeling that thier quality will be the same. I am mexican-american and have had great Mexican food throughout the eastbay. Again, service was great drinks good so we'll see next time

Place was recommended by many. Staff here are friendly and made the birthday boy smile with a big sombrero and a happy birthday song, but the food wasn't quite what we expected. The tamales was hard needed another minute or two on the steamer. The hot plate fajitas smell nice, but the meat was too try. The enchiladas was ok, but the sauce started to form a gel type film (maybe under the warmer too long). There wasn't any dish that stood out.

I love Mexican food but this place wasn’t anything special and maybe that’s why it was so empty. The service was great and the staff was great but the time it took to get our appetizers was a long wait. Our waitress had no control over the kitchen. Definitely wouldn’t come back for the food. Showed up there, ordered a burrito for take out. And after 25 minutes waiting. Asked where the order is. And they said orders are taken inline as ordered. And it wasn't started yet. So that means if I sit down and order, I'll be there more than 25-30 minutes to wait for my food to come to my table?

Food is OK, but kinda bland. Service isn't great if you're sitting outside. Not sure how the service is if you sit inside. Downtown Martinez is a really nice place to go eat because of the outdoor seating areas, but we'll be skipping La Tapatia in the future.

They've made several mistakes on our food over the past few months... I like the food enough to keep trying but I seriously need them to get it together. After a long day fasting while at work all we want is dinner to be easy, this makes it difficult, especially since I don't live nearby and can't just come back for them to "fix" it.

We really wanted to like this place, but in reality our food just mediocre at best. Everything tasted like it came from a can. Maybe it was an off night, based on the awards they have won and the other reviews, we had high hopes. Both my husband and I love Mexican food and in this case we wished we had gone to Chipotle for date night.

My food was just okay. Skirt steak was tasty, but overcooked. My partner's chile relleno was strange, in that the chili inside was tough and hard. Not tender and easy to cut with a knife and fork. Not saying it's because of this food, but my partner has had a slight stomach ache since.

I tried one of their shrimp burritos. It has to be the most forgettable mexican meal I have ever tried. Tasteless and bland. 2 starts since at least feel that I won't get sick from eating it.

Was VERY disappointed in the two Famosa salads that I bought today. No candied walnuts in either salad. Lettuce was wet and there was water in the bottom of the container. Hardly any blue cheese or cranberries. Chicken usually comes in a different container, on the side. Chicken was just thrown on top. If you are going to open early on the week-ends. then I think you should be prepared for customers. Had to call back three times to get someone to answer the phones, and that was after I got hung up on, on the second try. It cost $35 for those two salads, and I felt I could have gotten a better salad at the market.

Food was good but waiter said happy hour margaritas were $5 but when the check came it was $8.75 because it was blended. He probably should have said that when he asked me if I wanted it on the rocks or blended after I ordered the happy hour margarita!

Check your receipts before you leave. They up-charged us a few dollars on every item we ordered besides drinks. Whether it’s a computer error or human error, those charges added up, making our quick lunch over $60 for two people. Plus, service was terrible and the food was sub par

The last time I reported on this post was two years ago and I still feel the same way about their food. Tasteless. There are still way better Mexican restaurants and taco trucks better to eat then this place. On another note they were also responsible for the food truck ban in Martinez. The funny fact is it back fired in their face and food trucks are welcome back into Martinez. If they have better tasting food and a better staff than they wouldn’t feel threatened about food trucks. I’m sorry for anyone that has tastebuds go somewhere else. I have been here before and I never had a problem but yesterday I came and I was not happy. First of all the service was great. We can tell it was shift change, but I found it unprofessional when the servers where cussing at one another or being loud about something that was going to happen. Second, I wasn’t happy with the food, they chips we got where stail and then the food tasted bland. Before it never was bad but this time I wasn’t impressed. My friend was also with me and got sick after eating there. I don’t think I will be coming here anymore I’ll just stick to the other Mexican restaurants around here. In response to the owner; still won’t come back, there are way better Mexican restaurants around town that have more of a favor.

I've been here a few years ago and now the food was not Good.The burritos had no meat, enchiladas no flavor

We used to go here a lot. To the point the employees knew our order by heart when we saw them. I used to love it there. We hadn't been back for a while after having bad service but decide to give it one last try. Well when we arrived a heavy set waiter with red hair tied in a dirty pony tale sat us outside which was fine. Due to covid we wanted to be outside spaced away from people. Three other groups of people came that wanted to eat outside and asked to be spaced away from other people due to covid and the waiter refused and forced us all to sit as closely together as possible. We were all incredibly upset as again we are in a pandemic. When we got our food the order was wrong and our waiter Ernie was quick to fix it and was incredible to us. Unfortunately however we will not be back to this restaurant again and will make sure our family and friends know to take there money elsewhere. Very unfortunate that they do not take the pandemic seriously and dont listen to customers who are trying to be safe while still supporting there business.

If you order off the happy hour menu you have to specifically say you want the order off the happy hour menu or you will pay regular menu price for the same happy hour plate. You need to use the exact words "I want _____ from the happy hour menu ". I asked twice over 15 minutes before I got water. Two male waters. Both rude. Food is seriously bland. Salsa and carne asada with no flavor. Simply not satisfying and worth the price. Even if you do pay happy hour. The food still lacks.

I never write reviews. I’m new to the neighborhood. First my server looked genuinely unwell and nearly nodding off. my soda came it tasted like soda water and a dirty dish towel. The shrimp cocktail came in this ridiculous ornate bowl and the server spilled it IN MY SHOE! And the food finally came and it all tasted like it was out of a can. The mole especially was disgraceful. I never felt more compelled to not tip someone. She never once asked if we were doing okay or asked how the food was. And I’m not going to Karen out and complain and cause a scene. Never returning 0/10 idk how people are eating this highly. Never had worse “Mexican” food if you could even call it that.

Food burrito at least terrible then went back to use restroom the waiter literally went to check to see had I ordered there early. That was tacky and unbelievable even though I had a receipt. So go there if you want food disgusting bad service not to trusting of there customers. Oh and the kicker high priced Garbage! I'd rather we at top ramen. Just the truth.

Arrived and entered the restaurant to check in with the host. We were a party of 4 and wanted to make sure they knew we were outside. Waited at the host stand 5 minutes with no one insight. We over heard another guest ask the 1 bartender that they were ready to order and that the waiter would be with them shortly. Upon still not seeing anyone walking around tending to the several guests, we left. If you’re going to have a host stand, hand someone greet the guests.

Dined there before but been a few years. Ordered food to go, alacarte pork tamale and the chicken enchilada dinner. The enchiladas and tamale were bland. I thought the corn masa was on the dry side. I've had much better Mexican food at other places. Won't go back there!

First time here and first review ever. Waiter was nice but.. I ordered the Chile verde super burrito. Pretty disappointing. No sauce what so ever. Completely dry with just rice. Tasteless, with the last couple bites having sour cream. Chips were stale. 2 horrible super burritos, one combo enchilada/taco plate, and 2 beers for $70 ? No thank you.

Went to the Campbell theater Saturday night to see remembering James Brown decided to go eat at this restaurant. First time manager was waiting the tables taking orders had to wait 15 minutes for food when it arrived my husband didn't like one of his aunt chiladas told the manager that he didn't like it and could she just take that off and make it all a cart like what my wife was having she in turn said she couldn't take it off that she could order him something else he said he didn't want anything else she then stormed off from the table and start waiting on the other customers laughing and talking but when she came back to our table her face didn't have a smile I then told her she was going to take that off of there so we can pay our bill so we could go to our show she been went back to the cash register made another ticket came back and slammed the receipt down on the table and begin to storm off I've been told her you are the rudest manager you have no customer service and then she left no apology for her manners at all the bus guy deserve the tip he did a wonderful job ( Latino guy) manager is rude ! I would hate to think because we were the only dark-skinned in the restaurant at the time! I have never wrote a review on anyone but I refuse to let this one go by!NO*'STAR!

Went yesterday for to-go and the server was rude. Order tacos and coffee. Never received a coffee. But was CHARGED for it. When asked about it he claimed I never ordered them while simultaneously crumbling the receipt and running to the back. Disgusting behavior over a cup of coffee. Never again

I’m visiting Martinez because my best friend moved to Martinez tell so many good things about. Ok I chose the wrong place I’m Portuguese Latino love Mexican food and drink. I ask for one margarita and my friend ask for one tequila shot and order the food and very ridiculous and no professional service . Ask me to to go to other place because told me I’m drunk I have two glasses wine on hotel and I go out for dinner and take a tour. Im very responsible person and a business man. This place makes Martinez no welcome .
