My reviews of black bear vary from time to time but are always 4 or 5 stars for the friendly staff to the extremely generous portions that they serve, I love the old time outdoorsy feel to the place and the friendly attentive staff. Price: $$$ out of five Staff: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I had dinner at this Black Bear restaurant in Merced and the person that took care of me and my wife is an excellent waiter name Art!, highly recommend it.

My family eats here often! The portions are perfect for growing kids! And the vast menu is perfect for satisfying all our cravings!

It's such a fun place to eat! Love their motif & decor! Great portion sizes (biscuits & gravy was huge! ), kids love the food & atmosphere as well. They have fun things for sale in their gift shop like kids pajamas, bear paw slippers, & their hot sauces are really delicious: Baby Burn, Mama Burn, & Papa Burn. They have many locations to serve you nearby.

I get a ton of door dash and every time I’m greeted with a friendly welcome! Janet is so sweet and kind, I never have to worry about items not being in the order, even as far as having all utensils in order for my customers! Definitely a team player.👏🏽😄 I would hire her anywhere!

The manager talked to me this morning. The problem I list below was out of their control. He made up for it by delivering my order today and refunding my money. This proves they stand behind their business. For that, I have changed my review to show my appreciation. I ordered an $80 order to be delivered online. When the driver was there to pick up the food, they cancelled my order.

Maliya is the absolute best server ever! If you come here you better request her as your server because she is amazing! She fulfilled all of our requests, and the food was amazing! She got us drinks, condiments, and made it a pleasant experience. FOOD CAME IN VERY LARGE PORTIONS AND DID NOT DISAPPOINT! FIVE STARS!!! WOULD COME BACK AGAIN!

Be carefully when ordering the Bigfoot for breakfast! Wow. That was a lot of food. Just the Biscuits and gravy alone was enough for me! Add chicken fried steak, 3 eggs, and potatoes........Holy Cow! It was delicious! Our server did a great job, minus warning me what I was getting myself into. My friends had the Corned Beef Hash and potatoes, and also the regular Chicken Fried Steak breakfast. Thank you Black Bear Diner! We will be back with a better expectation of stomach capacity!

The always reliable Black Bear. Hubby got a burger, I got the taco salad. The taco salad was just unseasoned ground beef. If I'm in the area again I'll just order the cheeseburger salad.

I particularly enjoy the breakfast items here. Best Country Fried Steak in town! I like to touch on how they care about what it looks like in the restaurant inside and out, to make it feel welcoming and inviting.

Absolutely one of the best servers would definitely have to be Stephanie. We moved to Merced 2 years ago and we have come here about 2 handful of times and these last couple times we have come we have had Stephanie. She's very attentive, compassionate, and sweet. Love her keep her close and treat her right.

She makes us feel right at home every time we visit. Her conversation is warm and genuine, and her professionalism truly stands out. We love eating at Black Bear Diner. The food is always great and the service is excellent. We are visiting from out of town for thanksgiving and staying at a hotel. We ordered the family Holiday Turkey Dinner online for delivered. When the order arrived, a few items were missing. They went above and beyond to fix the order and quickly delivered the missing items and threw in a few pies for the troubles.

Had a great lunch here on Sept 29th. We stopped and the front staff were happy to see us. Bobby our server was working super hard and served us well. I had the meatloaf which was lovely and my wife had a salmon salad which she also liked. Would recommend stopping in here if in the area. Portions are great too at very reasonable prices !

This is the Huckleberry Lemonade from Black Bear Diner in Merced! I was a little sad that it was a little bit of false advertising since the picture had actual berries in the drink, but there was none in my actual cup 😔 Oh well haha It was an okay drink! Nothing crazyyyyy special, but it was still good haha The food was pretty good! I got my free meal, which came with pancakes, bacon, and eggs! It was a big portion! We also got the tri-tip meal, which was also pretty big! I feel like the meat was a little disappointing and low quality sadly :( You could probably find other places with better meat. The shrimp was pretty good! The mashed potatoes and fries were good too. The service was super great, so shoutout to the nice Hispanic waitress who is always super sweet! 💕

Drove an hour to meet someone for a late breakfast at Black Bear Diner in Merced. Have eaten there several times, but have not been back in awhile. Food was good, server was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant clean and inviting. Black Bear always has many items to chose from, larger quantities and for us, quality that always consistent. But what isn't consistent is pricing. The salad I had last month at another location in Northern California, was $4.80 higher in Merced, and our meal for 3, $12.30 higher than closer to home. I know it's a franchise and prices will vary, but just be aware prices will flucuate, even in the Central Valley, by location.

I really love this placs. The food is very good and very tasty. Black Bear Diners are always cozy like, and this one is not an exception. I would say that this particular place is one of my favorite BBD for breakfast, however last time I was there I ran out of coffee for a while until the waiter noticed it and asked if I wanted more. The server came filled my cup with coffee, left, and never came back to ask if we needed coffee, water or anything else.

We went at 11:30 on a Sunday morning. It seemed full, but we only had a 5 minute wait. By the time we left it had gotten busier. I ordered Bruce's meat lover's omelet with hash browns, and a biscuit. The waitress asked me if I wanted gravy on my biscuit for 99 cents. I foolishly said yes. My wife ordered the Southern Scramble. I also had coffee to drink while she had the iced tea. This was a LOT of food. The omelet was stuffed with big chunks of ham, sausage, and bacon. My wife's scramble was a biscuits and gravy dish. She loved the sausage. The hash browns were average, but they were large servings. My bill was $33. If I went again, I'd just drink water and not have the gravy on my biscuit. By the way, the biscuits were excellent. Anyway, that would save me $6, and I would still have left fully satisfied. A bit more expensive than Dennys, but a very good breakfast.

Very good portions in a diner setting.

We experienced a long wait time before being seated, which led to higher expectations for our meal. We went there for breakfast and ordered an omelet and eggs Benedict. Unfortunately, it took 40 minutes for our food to arrive. When it finally came, the eggs Benedict wasn’t perfect. It was served with potatoes that were so oily I couldn’t eat them. Overall, it was not a good experience.

Im not the biggest fan of black bear. This visit in particular was the worst. SERVICE: We didn't get greeted at the door, it took longer than it should've for someone to seat us (my mom &I) And the waitress was not very attentive, she seemed like she was always in a rush, and just didnt give a welcome vibe. FOOD: I've never been a fan of their menu, (but maybe thats just me) . They dont have a value menu like dennys, which is ok, but feels way overpriced. I got 1 sweet waffle, 2 eggs, side of garlic bread, and a vanilla cold brew for almost $30. My mom got the chicken fried steak which wasnt bad, but not worth getting again. I've been here SEVERAL times, I once rated this place 1 star because of how horrible the service and food was. They have greatly improved in their customer service and staff has a way better attitude and are more attentive. However, the food still could use some work. I can say that they have a pretty good chicken fried steak and a chicken and waffle "dinner for breakfast". But they cheap out on their steak. I got the NY Steak and eggs "breakfast for dinner" with an extra order of toast. $4.00 for ultra dry toast, never again. And the NY Steak was ordered medium, and was super dry, it tasted like there was freezer burn and very bland. You'll notice in the photo just how THIN the steak was, and THAT is not your average NY steak size, so they must cut 1 steak in half to cut costs. Ordered eggs scrambled with cheese and the cheese wasn't even melted, overall temperature of the food wasn't hot. I enjoyed the fact that the staff has stepped up in making us feel welcomed, now the chefs and/or corporation has to step up and stop cheaping out on their food. Update 7/12/22 - we went back months later to give them time to work out some kinks. Once again we were greatly surprised, I updated this posting to 3 stars as they improved on their food quality. I got the big foot chicken fried steak, the steak was tender and the crust was flaky, you could cut it with a fork which is really nice. Eggs were perfect and I got pancakes for sides, and they were improved as well. My wife got the same but with french toast as the side and the french toast tasted so much better this time. I'm greatly impressed with the improvements this place has made. Hopefully next time we go it'll be a 4 star experience. It seems going here first thing in the morning or before 10 and for early dinner time is the best time to go. Both of those times we went we had good experiences.

I cannot believe the difference in my Tri Tip sandwich compared to Modesto!! 13.99 to 18.99 wow sad how I was taken for my hard earn money. The sandwich in Modesto taste like it was $100 cut of meat. In Merced it taste like left over meat reheated cooked again!!! Letting all my friends and family to stay away from Black Bear Merced.

The restaurant was clean. It took about 10 minutes to get our drink order put it. Another 10 to order our food, then about 25-30 minutes to get our food waitress, did not check with us. While we waited for our food, our drinks were not refilled until right before we left. We kinda felt ignored.

We have a Christmas tradition (just started a couple of Christmas's ago) of going to Black Bear for breakfast. We normally have a good experience, whether on a holiday or regular day. However, yesterday was not good. We got there at 8am, and they were not busy. One other table with only a couple of people. The restaurant was so cold, which that's ok, maybe there was a heater issue...I did see one of the servers trying to adjust the thermostat and seeing frustrated that it didn't seem to make a difference. Our server was pretty good, friendly, refilled our drinks. The problem was the food. The first couple of plates came out with the country potatoes still cold. Not room temp (well maybe room temp in that situation) literally cold. My son's food had one egg, not two. I received my "ham steak" which was two very small slices of ham (which were still very tasty). I also ordered a pancake. It was Christmas so a treat, I don't order pancakes. It was large, but fairly thin, which ok....I opened the butter which had clearly melted at one point and separated and then refrigerated again. I managed to get it out of the package and figured it would melt on the pancake....except the pancake was cold. I couldn't even spread the butter. I did not take one bite. My husband worked in the restaurant industry for a long time, so we do not send food back ever. We will go again because this was one out of many good occasions, but what a disappointment. Do better Black Bear.

The Italian Sausage and eggs were good. Josephina, my waitress was very attentive. The kitchen was terrifically slow. THE B.B.D. was not slammed. I have been a Black Bear fan for years. I travel for a living and spend a lot of time in diners and restaurants in Texas, Florida, Arizona. WOW! What a price jump. I actually was startled. Paul's Place across town is easier on the wallet. Still like your food.

Came in with my mom ordered the corned beef hash. Waited 50 minutes for the food to arrive and it wasn’t even what I ordered. The cook took ham steak’s cut them into strips with country potatoes and called it corned beef hash and the waitress left the food on the counter and let it get cold. Had to ask for a server to come to the table to take my order two times within about 7-10 minutes of sitting there at a table. I was never asked about my empty glass or offered a refill. My table was never visited after the food was delivered to ask if it was good or if it needed anything else. We were never approached about anything else needed or presented with our check. We had to go up to the register to get our bill and pay.

This place has gone down hill. The service sucks and is super slow. Only one waiter for the whole place on a Saturday! Hardly any music and a super loud movie that only plays above the bar. Food also comes out super slow. Wow what a waist! They used to be one of the best place to have dinner. But no anymore!

Was visiting Merced with my 88 year old mom, and my 90 year old Aunt. Always heard good things about the restaurant, so thought we'd give it a try. After a 20 minute wait we were seated and our waitress came and took our order. We were trying to be patient and thought they must be busy or possibly short staffed. Finally after an hour, (I'm not kidding) I walked up to the counter and asked about our meals. Our waitress came to the table and apologized, stating she forgot to turn our order in. Very disappointing!!! Obviously we walked out.

But after ordering our food at 7:43pm we waited until 9:26pm to get our food! We were never told what was taking so long! We had to ask the waitress and her response was that they had several online orders yet they had half the dinner full of people complaining like us that they had not received their orders too. While we waited our waitress never came to check on us so we didn’t get refills. Also I had to ask several times for utilities and napkins, and they didn’t bring them till the end! Will not return!

It definitely was not the same temp or looked like the rest. For whatever reason, the vegetables are always VERY undercooked (hard) and I have to cook them a few more minutes in the microwave. This is standard for BB diner veggies as long as I’ve eaten at this location so I’ve gotten used to it (though who eats such undercooked veggies?) The carrots are just about raw. No exaggeration. I’m not sure if they were extra busy tonight and rushed it because my order took extra long to prepare. Whatever the issue, the portion I’m referring to did not look anything similar to the rest of the chicken fried steak. (See pic. I’m sure you can see the area I’m taking about, mid left.) I thought maybe it had gotten soggy after touching the side items (gravy, veggies, mashed potatoes) but the other parts that were touching weren’t soggy, and this wasn’t a problem in the past when I’ve ordered it to go. And why wasn’t it fried like the rest? I’m sure these are probably originally frozen after cooked, and then thawed & fried before serving, as per most restaurants that serve it. But I can’t be 100% sure so I’m afraid to eat it. Thus, I have to leave a negative review because the main part of my dinner is inedible. As for the wait time, it didn’t bother me as I prefer people take their time than get it wrong. I also understand that prices have gone up lately but diners should at least get what they pay for. And be able to eat it! We work hard for our $ too! Not only did I receive an undercooked chicken fried steak, my extra cornbread muffin that I’d paid for was not in the bag. This happens 1/2 the time I order a dinner from here using DD. The employees see 1 corn bread on the receipt and assume the order is complete when in reality I ordered an extra cornbread for a total of 2. Frustrating, especially when it happens consistently. Of course I could call and go pick it up but whom wants to drive all the way across town for a $2.29 cornbread muffin? Had I wanted to drive (or was even able) I would’ve picked up the entire order myself instead of paying a food delivery service to begin. And putting my name on an “IOU” list does no good as I don’t drive so I won’t be able to pick it up unless I get a ride. Plus they’re now closed for the day. I’m usually very satisfied w Big Bear Diner and their food but tonight I was very disappointed. I’m not saying to avoid this restaurant because the food is actually pretty good. It has a home cooked taste & feel to it. But just be sure to check your to go orders before you leave and make sure to let them know if/when they mess up like this. Maybe they’ll take it to heart and let the employees know they need to do a better job. Overall, the food is good...when it’s fully cooked & they put it all in the bag for you. I’m not going to knock the entire place for one bad meal but tonight it was $27 plus tip down the drain!

Service was great but the food and experience was terrible. Over 21 bucks for 2 eggs 2 slices of bacon and hash browns because I have celiac disease and they would not change out pancakes for hash browns. Taking advantage of my financially because of the disease i have was just an extra blow at the end after i went to pay. Then when I got the hash browns they tasted like cooking oil and were terrible. Honestly the worst hash browns I ever had and thats the real reason why i am writing this. I'm not one to complain or say anything so I will just post this. The service by the waiter was great.

Ordered chicken fried steak was cold and very oily 😌 we hubby ordered ham & egg ssid ham was vert thin not cooked fully (grilled) waited a very long time also. Mentioned to gal at registered said others has said the same of the CFS lunch meal. 🙅‍♀️🤦‍♀️.

Food took over 30 mins to come to the table. Eggs tasted and felt like they were microwaved, hash browns were cold, greasy and not cooked all the way, and the gravy was cold. We were not informed of any delay regarding our food and waiter just stood around talking to other tables.

Literally just tried to make a to go order and the young girl on the phone was struggling so bad and said she couldnt do it. So we asked to speak to anyone who actually could take our order and she put us on hold then hung up on us. It was so embarrassingly awful I can't stop laughing cause who can't take a simple order. Thats wild. Cause hanging up was so much less embarrassing then trying to ask a coworker for help. Lmao

Food tasted awful. It was cold undercooked too salty took an hour to get served, and there was hardly anybody in there very dark. I had to use the phone light to read the menu. The service was slow you can see the workers playing around, not paying attention to the customers.

Went yesterday for my sisters bday breakfast, we were a party of 15 so we were trying to be as thankful and patient as possible. However, our waitress didn’t check on us very often and we were left with empty drinks. Our food took quite a while. We all got home sick. Our toddler who only ate pancakes was also sick which had me thinking how long did they leave the pancake batter out for? Or was the batter expired? All of us ordered either burgers, pancakes or breakfast plates and we all left sick. Hmmmm

Not a place to eat lunch, unless you have 2 hours lunch breaks. Service is slow, food prep time is long, and not worth the wait. During my entire lunch break I was served a glass of tea. I paid full price and then waited longer for the to pack it to go. I returned to work late from lunch. I will never return to this restaurant, and encourage others not to eat here

To bad i can't update on my reviews but this morning i order a cali chicken sandwich and a California omelet . The sad thing is that my food was cold on delivery. The potatoes were dry and cold. Eggs were also dry. The chicken on the California sandwich was burnt. This is not the first time that black bear did this. Who ever is checking the food to go out needs to do a better job!!! Hopefully this will be my last time getting good from here. P.s. their prices are way too high for what they serve
