I have never had pastrami like this before! Anything I ever knew about it is out the window. This place is the best! I only wish they had one near me in Arizona. The pastrami fries and burger were huge, and hit the spot. I cant think of a more perfect version on Pastrami anywhere. I will be back next time I'm in town.
This is a delicious place to eat. I had the pastrami dip (6 of them), with mustard and pickles. Absolutely fantastic.
It comes as no surprise that I love pastrami! And I mean LOOOOOOVE pastrami! The Hat is a wonderfullittle gem that gets the job done at a reasonable price. I ordered a pastrami dip with potato salad and a diet cherry coke. Everything was perfect and I'll definitely be back. A side of au jus would have been nice.😀
Amazing pastrami sandwich, served hot and fresh. You want pastrami outside N.Y.? This is your place. Forget the other tourist spots, go to The Hat. 75 years of giving L.A. the best. Put it in your L.A. must try food list, you'll thank me.
Always great food. Pastrami dip and chili cheese fries!
I have been going to the Hat since I was a child. Always have loved their pastrami dip. Chili cheese fries are the best. Plenty of food for the price. Worth every penny. 😋
Their pastrami sandwiches are truely exceptional!!! I don't come to this place as often as I would like to. I had a bit of the chili cheese dog a couple months ago for the first time and haven't stopped thinking about since then. The flavors were really good and it left me wanting more. I finally made it back to get my own order of the Chili Cheese Dog. It truely is amazing and prob my preferred item at the moment at The Hat. All the flavors are well balanced. My only complaint is I wish the toppings we put together differently. The dog is pretty thick and you really have to open wide to take a bite that consists of all the ingredients. I think it's important that each bite of this dog has a bit of everything for the full taste
It’s nearing midnight and I’m heading west on the 60 when my gas light flicks on. I still have a ways to go till I’m home so I take the next exit; Atlantic Boulevard. As I sit at the stoplight to turn into the shell station, the neon signs of “The Hat” catch my eyes. World Famous Pastrami. I see through the perfectly transparent front windows a scene that reminds me of a Edward Hopper painting. A few patrons sit beneath fluorescent white lights as a crew of cooks bustle behind the counter to make what I assume to be the pastrami in question. My stomach rumbles, and I follow its hungry will. I park, and walk into a place that seems not to have changed for a handful of decades. I choose the most obvious menu options: Pastrami, small fries, medium Coke. I get a paper number and sit and a two-person booth of cracked faux-leather from the 1980s. I watch as the cashier slides order after order attached by a binder clip down a clothes-line, which spans the kitchen. And I watch as the cooks respond with both a robotic efficiency, yet human enthusiasm. Five minutes later, I am handed two paper bags that seem too heavy for what I ordered. And indeed when I open them, I find that the small fries occupy half of the bag and weigh enough to have their own gravitational pull. I sample a few and they taste…like fries. I unwrap the pastrami sandwich and gaze upon more pastrami than I have had in the last few years, falling out of a standard hoagie. It’s enough food for a small family, yet here I sit alone, preparing for battle. It’s delicious. Between bites I contemplate life, looking out through those simple, charming windows at the light night traffic that zips by on a rare, mirror-like, rain covered highway. Though I was full five or so bites ago, I still have half a sandwich and a pound of fries to go. But I’m here for it, loving every second. The charm one feels with a visit to The Hat is quintessentially old-American, and in its transparent simplicity, one finds easy peace. In a world of qr-code menus, apple pay, food delivery robots, The Hat offers an escape from the ultra-complicated, extra-automated 21st century. A time machine I’ll stop by any time. 10/10.
Best pastrami in the free world. My son and I flew into LA. We went directly from LAX to the Hat. The Pastrami dip is absolutely mouth watering. It’s huge and fill you up If you even think you like pastrami this place is a must. The only downside is they won’t ship one to me twice a month in Houston.
Can't go wrong with the chili cheese fries...sooo good. Pastrami was delicious.
This old chain is famous for delicious pastrami sandwitches and chili cheese fries.
There is no other place like the hat. For pastramis chili fries, excellent anytime we drive through L, a, we stop at the head 2 week. Best best draw me ever.
We love eating here, we travel miles to eat here, we would love if they built one by our house.
The service is fabulous and the atmosphere is really fun. The food is just okay. they have a big choice of food items, but sometimes the chicken gets burnt. The fountain drinks are very big, so that's a plus.
I recently dined at The Hat, and I must say, the portions here are incredibly generous! I indulged in their pastrami, chili cheese fries, and the pastrami dip sandwich – all of which delivered on flavor and size. This place truly embodies the iconic LA food scene. While it's a tad on the pricier side for fast food, the taste and experience make every penny worthwhile. Highly recommend if you're looking for a hearty meal with that classic LA vibe!
Is a good spot...been going for the past 6 years. Chilli cheese fries are always good and you get your money's worth. Just wish the pastrami sandwich was made more consistently the same. This time around felt either a bit smaller or less. Last time I came felt bigger and more pastrami. Over all my place to go to. I highly recommend.
I am in LOVE with this place, found it by "mistake" looking for roastbeef and pastrami sandwiches, and ended up finding all in 1. We went to eat ( all my family) and we were so satisfied with the price, the food and the customer service! The servers are super nice and attentive. We didn't know what to order, and they were very patient and helpful. Will definitely go back again! Just an extra: if you like onion rings, I must say this one's the BEST!!
I’ve been coming here for years, over 20 years and the food is always good but very fattening lol. Great spot if it’s ur cheat day. Meal portions are moderate;they used to be much larger and the prices are very reasonably priced and quality is great. I like getting the pastrami sandwich or pastrami chili cheese fries with avocado. Can never go wrong with chili cheese fries or pastrami sandwhich. Burgers are great too
The best... it takes 2 or 3 people to finish them pastrami chili cheese fries. Update: if you're going to have an ordering service online make it better. Looks like they need to keep up with the times for a place that could only fit 50 people. Everyone is on the go, if anyone orders online have it ready when they pick it up. Is not like The Hat has over 30 options on the menu. If the hat needs help in how online orders need to work im more glad to help. If someone is waiting 30min for an order that had to be done by 6pm something is wrong here. Change up the food line don't push make sure you pull the orders.
Always a favorite for any occasion, wish the chilli fries had a half order option. Staff is on point, ingredients are fresh and quality is their highest priority. Definitely a great value for cleanliness, service and most importantly food! Still a favorite, wish they did half orders of the chili fries!
This place gave me the most nostalgic feels🤙College days used to come here all the time since i lived down the street in Monterey park and grab the pastrami or french dip along with the chili fries. Open late and after all these years the pastrami dip was still on point. Open since 1951, 72 years running strong with their world famous pastrami👍
Yeah Definitely Came Here To Get Awesome Pastrami Combo Togo. Oh Yeah They Truly Didn't Disappoint Me At All. I Actually Like New & Improved The French Fries. Yeah Definitely Have Watch Out For Staff Who Over Fill Your Cup With Ice. Yup Definitely Don't Want Get Iced Alright. I Definitely Recommend Pastrami Combo In LA.
They give you a huge amounts of food. I highly recommend sharing the chili cheese fries, the pastrami dip... fantastic. I would totally go again and bring friends I loved this place the service was excellent fast I had a line of 7 people in front of me and got out in less than 5 minutes
I was in the area and I decided to try this location since the Simi valley one surprised me on how good it was. The fact there was no parking available and I had to park in the street said a lot! People would complain about that but that just told me it must be good since there’s so many people there! I went with the pastrami dip again and I was disappointed again it was delicious and if you want pastrami just go with the hat they are doing a great job!
Been coming here for years this location and the Alhambra one. Always get the pastrami burger and wet fries (gravy fries). We got to order very quickly and got food in less than 10 mins. (You do need a mask to enter and order the usual mandates currently apply.)Definitely worth a try if you are in the area. Just wish they had a closer location like Santa Monica or Culver city they would do so well with all the touristy people in this area.
Been here forever. Not just pastrami but really good double chili cheese burger. I rather get it here than at Tommy's. They put tomato and onions. Really good chili cheese hot dog.
I always heard good things about The Hat from people who have been going here for over 20 years. I finally decided to try it and everything was amazing. The food tastes like good old school food and dining in is actually nice because it also has an old school effect.
Passed by here getting grocerys then my bf begging me to get the pastrami chili cheese fries that he got recommend. So we did. Whole restaurant was busy and packed. Took a bit to get the food but its worth the wait tho. Im not a fan of pastrami by itself but combine with fries, pickles, onions, tomatoes, chili it was BUSSSSSSIN!
I stopped here on the advice of a local and was very pleased! I got a steak sandwich and fries and my friend got pastrami. Both of us were knocked over by how good it was and how much there was! It can get a little busy at times but it's well worth it. The interior is decorated with historical photographs and such. The staff is friendly and the inside is clean. I can see why it's a beloved institution in the area! Thank you for a great experience and great food!
I was visiting California and had never heard of The Hat. My friend asked if I liked pastrami, I said absolutely and he said we're going to The Hat. The location I went to has a real nostalgic feel, the business has been around for 70 years, the food was reasonably priced and an excellent value. If you like pastrami, this is a restaurant you need to go to.
Been going there since high school and never disappoints always get the pastrami chilli chesse fries and the pastrami is so delicious hands down on a cold day its the go to place the burgers are very good and they have many options on the menu 😋
Oh my this place was off the hook! Not much parking but people come in and out pretty quick so it’s worth waiting to find a spot. I’m not a pastrami fan so I got the roast beef dip while my hubby got the pastrami. We ordered a side of chili cheese fries. The fries are ENORMOUS! Big enough to share with 4 people so I’m glad we only had 1 order. Small inside eating. 2 top tables and 4 top tables. Restroom available for customers. Definitely will try closer locations but we just happened to be near this one! Enjoy 😊
Take out. Pastrami dip...lean and well stuffed. More pickles please. Really satisfying sandwich. Also got the chili cheeseburger, the patty seemed small but the fresh tomato and pickles really lifted up the burger... More chili please!! It was crowded on a Sunday at 2 pm...but the order line moved quickly. And the server at the pickup window was friendly. Call ahead to avoid the line.
Late dinner and decided to take my partner here cause he never had THE HAT. WTH you live in LA and never had THE HAT ? Went late so had to do take out plus we had Thomas our dog. Food is always good portions are always good too. Service is always above and beyond. Atmosphere is always good even when it’s a late visit! None the less we both gave it a 5 star review. Definitely recommend
This place give a pretty good impression for my first time. The pastrami was great and the graveyard so good! I can’t wait to try the pastarami fries with gravy soon’seevcoe is nice and friendly! Atmosphere has a diner vibe with guests coming and going a nd tables/ booths
The Hat definitely hit the spot. I had the pastrami sandwich and a pastrami burger, and both were fire. The pastrami sandwich was stacked with thick, juicy tender and perfectly seasoned pastrami. You can tell why they’re known for it. Messy in the best way possible. The burger was just as solid fresh, well cooked, and packed with flavor. Simple, classic, and satisfying. Overall, great comfort food, fast service, and big portions. If you’re craving something hearty, The Hat never disappoints. I’ll definitely be back!
The Hat in Monterey Park is one of those classic Southern California spots that never disappoints. This place is legendary for a reason. I ordered the chili fries with extra pastrami and shredded cheddar, and it was absolutely loaded — generous portions, bold flavors, and pure comfort food at its best. The pastrami was juicy and tender, piled high on top of crispy fries, and the chili had that rich, savory taste that keeps you eating even when you’re already full. Nothing feels skimpy here. You definitely get your money’s worth, and one order is more than enough to satisfy a big appetite. The atmosphere is casual and no-frills, exactly what you’d expect from a longtime local favorite. Service was fast and efficient, even late at night, and the staff kept everything moving smoothly. It’s a great spot for a late dinner, post-work meal, or just when you’re craving something hearty. If you’re into classic pastrami, chili fries, or old-school diner vibes, The Hat is a must-visit. It’s not fancy, but it’s honest, filling, and consistently good — the kind of place you’ll keep coming back to. Highly recommended 👍
Best pastrami sandwich at great price. Along with burgers and now they have other sandwiches 🥪, veggie, turkey, and ham. Their fries are great, too. Plain fries, chili cheese with or without tomatoes and pickles or more pastrami. 😋 ❤️ But, eat those fries with family or friends, it's a lot of food. Enjoy 😉
Close at 1am was the sales technique to get me to drive there. Its not drive thru, but they have one of the best chili cheese fries and wet fries in LA for the late night. The chili cheese fries with pastrami and chopped onions is the star here, at least for me. If you still have room in your luggage compartment, get a pastrami sandwich, dipped. They also have steak sandwiches. Then top it off with a pina colada or orange bang. Go home happy!
Ok so this isn't a fancy place, but an experience place. It's no wonder why this place has been around since 1951. The food and prices are very good!! The shop is small, the line can be long, but it is worth the trouble. There is little to no parking, but be patient and you'll find some. The pastrimi is good, not the best I've had but for 13$ it's well worth it. Wife got a cheeseburger and said it was very good. We got the chili cheese fries which are steep at 10+$ and onion rings (panko breaded) but they are so generous with the portions it's kinda worth it. I had never been to this place and I did not know what I had been missing. The pastrimi was good, lots of pickles (which I don't like) mustard and a good bun. Fries were well cooked, heaped with chilly and they give you a lot!! Onion rings, crispy, well cooked and again, generous portion!!. Overall everything was great. They are very busy, but worth the trouble to find parking, wait in line, wait for a table, wait for food, and then devour the vittals once they arrive!! Then, you'll see it was all worthwhile! RECOMMEND!!!!
I have been eating at The Hat for many years. Their pastrami dip sandwich is my favorite with a generous pile of thinly sliced meat dipped in juices on a French roll that is dripping in flavor. This is my favorite pastrami sandwich. They are very generous with the fries. The small order is shown in the picture. It is hard to tell the perspective but the drinks are a med and large. There are a lot of fries. This is the first time I visited this location. It has outdoor patio seating. Ordering is done streetside through windows with the seating on the other side of the building attached to the parking. The seating area was clean and comfortable. This location is on a busy street but the street noise didn't bother me. While I was there a staff member came out and wiped down the tables and chairs that weren't being used. The food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot and fresh. There was quite a bit of free parking associated with The Hat. I look forward to eating at this location again. Bonus, there are free refills for soft drinks. I just took my cup to the pick up window without the cover and straw, and it was refilled.
12/23/2024 The Hat 2300 S. Atlantic Blvd Monterey Park, CA 91754 I went there around noon on a Monday and took the last parking space in the smallish lot around the building. There were many people standing and waiting for their orders. I ordered and paid at the register and given a numbered stub and receipt, the last digits on the stub is your order that is called. The interior seating is fast food bench style and can get full, but turn around is quick. After about 5 minutes, I got my Chili Dog with onions and the Pastrami Dip. The grilled split dog had a generous messy amount of Chili. The Chili was flavorful and a little spicy. This is the best Chili Dog in the area, I've tried three other places nearby. The pastrami was plentiful and tasty (not too salty) with a few pickles on top. Prices were reasonable and a good value. Definitely repeatable especially for the Chili Dog.
This is one of my favorite stops when passing through LA. The Hat, has a pastrami sandwich that you will enjoy. Get there alittle before lunch or will have to wait in line. Check your map to locate the closest Hat on your route, all are great. Warning: if you don't have an appetite ,share the fries.
If you're looking for a pastrami fix, The Hat is your place. The service is quick and the establishment is pretty clean. The portions here are definitely sharable, especially the pastrami chili cheese fries. I definitely recommend anything here with pastrami, it's savory and does not disappoint.
Parking is small the place is a Small place but there are 8 indoor tables. Really good portion food, had the pastrami dip, pastrami chili cheese fries, and onion rings. Highly recommend the sandwich and onion rings. Chili cheese fries was okay, chili is bland as well as the fries, only good thing is the pastrami and huge portion. Also they have a huge selection of condiments from ketchup, ranch, hot sauce, mustard, mayo, horseradish sauce, etc and hot peppers
I wasn't sure what to expect, but it looked decent from the outside. Inside, introduced like any other hamburger/chilidog/pastrami joint in LA. Pros: the Bread was toasted like a kings dream. Never had it like that before. The meat and whole burger was hearty. Like solid meal for 6 bucks! So cheap for quality tatse and amount. What sold me was the bun. I bit into that crunchy and super well toasted bun like it was heaven on my lips. It was so good I thought they put bacon on my burger. Somehow the bun encaptured the salty yet nice oil flavor baked into that bread. So good I left this review. Cons: Not really any, other than the bathroom setup. It's a great place. One of my top 10 burger places in LA.
The pastrami dip was excellent tasting, but wish it had more meat. Also it doesn't have any broth to dip unless you ask for extra. They just paddle some on before wrapping it up. Definitely worth going if you love pastrami. Also chili cheese fries are massive and should be shared with one or two other people.
What can I say though? Everyone else enjoyed their sandwich but mine was just meh. Ive heard their pastrami sandwiches are good but the steak sandwich, not thay great. Everyone else's sandwiches were massive and mine was nothing compared to how the others were made. They are generous with their bbq and their pastrami but not their steak. I definitely wouldn't get that sandwich again but their chili cheese fries were okay.
Ok so came here for the first time and had the famous pastrami dip and the chili cheese fries, at first I thought the Chili Cheese fries were a bit to expensive at $10usd but holy cow! The portion is huge, that’s enough for four or five people to side with their sandwiches and although as you can see in the photo they have a tremendous look they were a bit too bland, you can see how they’re bringing the fries fresh out of the frier in front of you but I’m not sure if they add salt to them cause they sure didn’t taste salty at all and the chili was more like a homemade canned chili, the sandwich was ok, good portion, nice taste of the Au Jus but I wish the bread was toasted or at least steamed since I didn’t finished it because I was full I took half of the sandwich home and a few hours later I put it on the microwave for 30 seconds and surprise! It was much better! Haha anyways, this is a good spot for classic old school LA Pastrami food but I don’t think it would be my first choice for eating out
First off, parking is a big issue here because it's so popular. Be ready to hunt down a parking spot nearby and walk during busy times. The pastrami sandwiches are huge as well as the portion of fries if you get an order. This day I ordered some chili cheese fries and barely finished them. They were pretty damned good. This location is the closest to me so when I'm nearby and hungry I'll stop by. All the staff I dealt with were quick, efficient and polite. As busy as it was during lunch, my order was ready quickly.
I ate here 11/29/25 around 5:30pm Not sure if it was that shift but they where stingy with the pastrami and the pickle, they charge 55 cents more to get extra pickles because they had gave me 5 pickles it was all different now I have to look for a new hat to try because this one left a bad taste in my mouth Sorry but not sorry to the people that love this place
When I lived and worked in the area, The Hat was always a 'go to' and always consistent...good fast food, generous portions. Last week I was in the area and ordered a chili dog for my mom and I. Have to say, I was a bit disappointed. There was more tomato than chili. In the past, you would be forced to eat it with a knife and fork. Not anymore. For the rise in prices...I expected more or at least as good as before.
It's not what it used to be. Back in the good old days a pastrami would feed up to two people. Now, the amount of pastrami is much less what it used to be. The meat is not the best.
There plenty of places to grab lunch at in Los Angeles but on October 8th (2023), The Hat was the most convenient place to get something to eat. Usually when I travel, I try to be more curated with my cuisine but I didn’t have that luxury on this occasion. Nonetheless, I think the name and notoriety of this chain is the best thing about it. I stopped at this location around 1:15pm on a Sunday for lunch with a special friend. It was a long weekend and we were preparing for a long day so I figured I’d load up on calories. The location was intentionally nostalgic and had a curious appeal to it. The physical appeal definitely stands out given the area. We ordered from their menu outdoors and sat on the patio near the parking lot. I ordered the Chili Cheese burger with no onions and fries. There wasn’t almost anyone else ordering or arriving so our food came out pretty fast. They give you an entire bag full of fries and the burger was both robust and sloppy. The burger was well cooked and tolerable but the chili was bland and it didn’t seem worth the mess after it was all over with. It was a messy meal for sure, it definitely filled me up, and we got fries for the road but I wasn’t necessarily ecstatic about the experience afterwards. I don’t mean to bash the establishment, the workers or the food. Being from Oklahoma, I’m very accustomed to seeing diner and drive-in-themed restaurants except, they usually deliver a more satiating, cheap and deliciously unhealthy meal. I think The Hat is good for what it is. Who knows, maybe I went at the wrong time or ordered the wrong thing, but I’m not too encouraged to return unless under the right circumstances.
Fries too dry and starchy. With the Pastrami price might as well eat a bowl of Pho.
Ok, so I've had my share of going to the Hat experience and so far this one has been a disappointment. Food & taste at this location were nothing like I've had😔 at others such as the one in Pasadena, Rancho Cucamonga & Upland. Those locations lived up to their standards. So to those who have been at other Hat locations and haven't been to this one you'll taste the difference.
So I drove 40 min just to try the pastrami chilli cheese fries at almost 20 bucks. Huge portion but the flavor wasn't there. Clean restaurant and bathroom. Very little parking and space to eat. The food came out fast and warm and the workers are nice. Free refills on drinks is nice also. I wouldn't recommend this place.
The person that was attending my order got the order wrong I had a stomach ache because I got the wrong soda diet at that and then when I call them you tell me that I can't get my money back after my stomach's been upset because of it gave me a diet soda my stomach and my meals already messed up and yet all they could do is say we'll replace your order right now will give you more food why would I want more food it doesn't make any sense if they messed up my order by giving me a diet Coke should I not get the whole meal at least one meal back my money because I just have an upset stomach right now because of the diet Coke and the food is pretty much not staying down because my stomach's upset so in my eyes they didn't satisfy me or my needs for my food. I'm very disappointed and how they went about the situation they were just trying to give me more food. If I just told them that the diet coke is what made my stomach upset why would I want more food does it make any sense it does not therefore the guy did not want to fix it he, he did not make me a happy customer I'm overwhelmed I am stressed and I have a stomach ache and all due because of their mistake thank you very much for letting me share this experience with you.
This place isn’t what it use to be, the pastrami sandwich is hella small now and mostly everything has no flavor.
Today was my first time eating here and last, it was disappointing never again. When I ordered the lady told me the chili cheese fries are only one size. Which I later find out by hearing other orders was not correct. My order was $14.97 just for one item the pastrami chili cheese fries. It’s overpriced and the flavor was inexistent. The pastrami and cheese was barely even there it was mostly just chili. I have heard amazing stuff from this place but it was all lies. I just ate some because I paid for it and I hate wasting food. If not I would’ve thrown it away. I honestly wished I would’ve walked out and eaten at another restaurant that has better service and flavors!
