This review is primarily for their barbacoa de borrego (lamb). They have a large menu with a lot of various options and everything I've had here is delicious. But once I tried their barbacoa with consome, I haven't been able to resist it every time I visit. On several occasions I've craved it and made a special trip just to get some. The lamb meat is succulent and very flavorful. The broth is served on the side. It has rice and garbanzo beans in it and is equally flavorful. I highly recommend it.
Expensive for salvadorean food but still authentic. During the pandemic everything seems to check out health wise. If you are ordering to go, do it ahead of time as wait can be long.
Weekend Barbacoa meat goes great on tacos & gorditas. Standard options like pollo & al pastor are also tasty & fresh, but they also have others like chuleta ( pork chop) which aren't common elsewhere. Torta Cubana is also really tasty, albeit too large portion size to finish at one time for a single person.
One of the best Cuban sandwiches I have ever had! Portions are generous and staff was friendly! Already dreaming of round 2!
I love their El Salvadorian pupusa which is their national dish. Fried corn cakes made with corn flour Masa filled with beans cheese and meat if you desire. I get the bean and cheese so not spicy hot. You get a cabbage slaw vinaigrette and red sauce and chips which theirs is delicious. Two is plenty for me 6 in or so in diameter
The food was delicious, the shrimp cocktail it was crazy, totally recommended
Whoa I'm glad I found this place. I think most of the negative reviews are people who do not understand the atmosphere. It feels like an escape to Latin America. The food and atmosphere is very satisfying.
Best taqueria with incredible food! I have been here about 10 times, and always been so impressed.
The Myrtle water (arrayán) was delicious, the 3 quesadillas with huitlacoche were stupendous, their 3 Gus chicken quesadillas were fabulous, all hand made, both the red and green salsa were super spicy. The surprising thing was it was $30, not exactly 1 dollar sign....
I love this place. Small parking lot but quite a few tables. Every time I've come, we've been able to sit right away! Their menu is extensive and everything is delicious. I always get the pupusas though because even though the menu has a ton of food, this is the best thing they have there. They also have great chips they bring over to start your meal. And yesterday when we were there, they brought me one of the wrong pupusas, but they brought me the right one quickly and free of charge!
This is a spot me and my significant other go to on a constant basis to enjoy great food. The prices are completely reasonable and the portion sizes are worth it. The staff are nice and welcoming. Highly recommend
We have been eating here for years. Looks like a hole in the wall type of place but its clean the food is legit. The staff is always nice and the ladies in the kitchen are super sweet and make the best pupusas:)
We have eaten here at least 10 times in the past few months. This is the best Latin food around. A huge menu of Mexican, Salvadoran, and Honduras dishes. Eat in or take out. This place is nearly always busy. Cash only, no credit cards.
My favourite tacos and burritos of all time. The food here is so good: fresh, tasty and great value. I don’t like eating in due to all the mirrors but that’s just cause I’m a uggo
Excellent product, next time Ill try the food.
Love their food, popusas are to die, I have edit my review since they accepted debit and credit. Thank you so much. I love this place. The ladies are so kind and attentive, they stay busy but their customer service never fails. If you have a hangover, you would benefit from their seafood platters.
I had the shrimp cocktail. It was really good. I also liked the salsa. Service was really friendly.
This is the best Mexican! We have been coming for years and are always blown away how much better this place is and how authentic it tastes!
SO GOOD! Doesn’t look like much from the outside but an absolute diamond in the rough. Food is amazing, staff are super friendly, and the restaurant clean!
Loved this place and people for years. The music a touch too loud. Outstanding gem in MV
Pupusas were amazing --they give you a side dish and a sauce so that each bite is flavorful. We ordered the quesadillas gus and the pollo guisado--The portions were huge, especially the pollo guisado, though the quesadillas with the fries/baked outer shell and all the works inside (chicken, lettuce, sour cream, spicy red salsa) were better than the pollo guisado, which apparently just tasted like regular chicken. They mixed up our receipts though the end result would be roughly the same anyway, and the servers were friendly though some speak limited English (they will bring someone who understands more English out if necessary). Atmosphere and lighting were both very cool!
I was craving some Latin American comfort food and this place fixed that right up. Great papusus, tamals, and tasty mole sauce. Good portions as well, see my photos. Service is a bit slow but friendly, it's just laid back. Will definitely come back for more papusus. Lots of options including breakfast.
My family have been going here for years now. The food is great and the service is great. It is not a 5 star because they place is a little run down but it is clean!
Good all around Mexican and Salvadorian restaurant offering pupusas and tacos (and lots of other traditional foods). Gets busy. Next to a Good Will. Somewhat tight parking. Typically have soccer games or Spanish television on. And loud music.
Had 3 queso pupusas and 3 platano empanadas. Pupusas were ok never like the originals, you can tell because they originals can be open apart in two ...this ones were not able..i felt like I was eating Mexican food. Empanadas were not jucy...dry inside and outside. Curtido was not fermented right... But because there isn't many salvadorian food around, ill keep coming to remind me about El salvador...
some people i respect really love this place but i haven't figured out what to order that is great. huge menu.
First off, the food here is very good. We love the sinchronizada (meaty quesadilla), their traditional breakfast (fried plantains with eggs, beans, and cream), the wet burrito and so on. It's all good. Service is also friendly if a little delayed. I'm only docking a star because it's a little expensive given it's cash only, and not super clean (the bathroom is outside, you need a key, and it's often poorly kept). Still, we'll keep going back for the food.
This place has good food. Way better than the ones in San Jose. But, the service when you dine in is a hit or miss. Overall if you want good food and don’t mind the service to be alright. It’s a good place to order carry out
Delicious! Quick, casual taqueria that has a real way with spices. We went twice while visiting the area. Food: We had the pupusas (solid & delicious, although I think maybe not made fresh?), the quesadillas with squash blossom (excellent!), the chips & guac (sturdy & flavorful, with a very chunky guac that I quite liked), and the fish tacos (extremely messy to eat, somewhat overfilled, but light, summery, and well-cooked). Everything was good except the coleslaw, which we found a bit too vinegary - but we got it for free with our order so it's hard to complain about that. The pupusas deserve special mention for being delightful little pockets of melted cheese and whatever else you desire - it's worth going here just for them. Prices: $4-5 for sides, $10-$13 for mains. We fed two hungry people for <$30 each time, so not the cheapest eats out there, but far from unreasonably priced. Ambience: Like a cafeteria - loud background music, multiple big TVs, and the overall feel of plastic furniture and plastic cutlery. I found it kind of unappealing and think the place could do with a bit of an upgrade in this department, which is a shame since it's otherwise pretty great. Service: Fine - efficient definitely, if somewhat disinterested.
Good food, service is fast, but the food takes a bit longer than I would usually want to wait. On the expensive side for Salvadorean food but the authenticity counters for that. Though there are some veggie options, I would not trust them as all the food is cooked on the same place.
Cool music and decent tacos. I enjoyed the authentic flavor in the al pastor, probably the best I have had in the bay area. Great music (latin modern) played really loud! I enjoyed this place.
We stopped by for pupusas, of course. That's my sons favorite, and there are not too many places where you can get that around here. (I've always thought their pupusa salsa is too salty for me, but this last time I went, it wasn't, thankfully. Maybe they have adjusted their recipe?) Their fruit drinks are super delicious! Arrayan is my favorite. Highly recommend. Next time I will order two, and just skip dinner :-P As my son ordered pupusas, i ate some sort of taco plate that the server recommended. Very good meat! My son actually left his pupusa to grab my tacos instead, which never happens! I've also had super delicious tacos al pastor here a few years ago where they were searing the meat outside. (If you drive by on El Camino and see them do that, just stop and get some!) If you like Salvadoran food or tacos, this is a good stop in Mtv/Svl. (If they would change the interior lighting, lower their TV volume, and get a different kind of tortilla chips, i'd give them 5 stars).
Glad I gave this place a second chance. I left my first visit when I was told to seat myself and proceeded to sit there for 10 minutes without anyone coming to take my order. Order tacos a la carte. One asada and one El pastor, extra for queso. Both were good, but street size and came basic just cilantro and onion. (partly why only 4 stars) Also order the potato and chorizo papusa. Not bad, but not the best I've had. Had an earthy taste that I could quite put my finger on. Came with house slaw which was pretty good. Salsa was okay and their chips are weak at best. Will be back to try a couple more dishes.
Decent “sit down” Mexican restaurant with a neighborhood taqueria feel and setting. They offer take out or dine in (server attended) service as well. The menu is large, with various Mexican and Central American dishes such as tacos, pupusas, and some other dishes I’ve never tried! Food quality is good (similar to a taqueria), service is fast, setting and customer service could be improved a bit. The owner was nice but some of the newer staff were a little cold. Also, I wonder if this place would be better as a counter order and sit down spot - rather than having servers. Otherwise, this is a good spot if you’re looking for a quick and easy lunch or dinner and want to be attended to - rather than ordering at a counter or getting take out. Food is good for the area. I’d chose this spot if I wanted something between a taqueria and an nicer sit down restaurant. It falls somewhere in between!
Average food, distracted service.
Went at lunchtime on Sunday. Lots of people getting takeout! Bought pupusas for some friends. Had to wait as they're made fresh...but so many people ordered stuff while I was waiting and they got their orders so fast. Maybe other foods are pre-prepared? From the volume of people, maybe I should give 4 or 5 stars but waiting all the while other people got their orders put me off. (this is the go to restaurant for some of my friends)
Food id hreat but food takes a long time to get, not enough servers
The food was good enough. But, having an atm machine with a $3 charge inside because your business ONLY accepts cash is dishonest. This is 2018, if you can't handle other payment methods you will most likely fail as a business.
The food is subpar. The place needs a major up grade. I've had better Salvadorian food. The food here is way over priced. The service was ok. If you like Mexican music than the background music won't bother you.
I love the food here, but the server/cashier Stephanie did not have the costumer service experience that someone should have working in a restaurant. She was rude and seemed as if she didn’t walk to work there. La señora Stephanie no sabe attender bien a la gente. Pero la comida está muy bien siempre me gustaba venir a comer aquí.
A coworker suggested I go there and have a torta. I think he wanted me to get a grande just to see how large it is. The sandwich was ok. The rest of the food my group ordered was just ok as well. There is not ambiance there so this is more of a lunch place.
Food is pretty good. Prices a tad high, portions are bigger than other places. Their papusa are good size and are tasty. Free chips and salsa, seating is ok most tables only fit 4. Service is avg, depending on time of day you need to constantly remind staff of things.
I've had better Mexican food. I was shocked they didn't offer red sauce with the enchiladas
Recently moved to the area and quickly found this place and fell in love with the tortas de asada and the pupusas revueltas. Six months ago this would have been a four star review... but the last three times I've picked up food there, they got the order wrong and handed me stuff I won't be able to get my family to eat. I'm on to them now and I ask them to remake it... but why does it keep happening in the first place? The last time I was there, the lady I believe to be the head cook and some other lady who appeared to be an owner or manager were having a quite loud and obnoxious argument right up front by the front register in Spanish. They may have assumed I couldn't understand as I do not look like I would be likely to understand, but I did understand, and they were both being petty. My daughter who was with me was easily able to tell they were arguing without the ability to understand Spanish, as could (I assume) the patrons sitting at the tables less than ten feet from where the argument was taking place. We used to love this place, but as of March 2015, we won't be going back.
Food was...meh. Service, was mediocre to daddy the least. Place, was unclean (tables needed cleaning, floor had trash...). But, to maybe this was unusual since there was only ONE person handling the cashering, the waitressing and three bussing, hence the 2 stars.
Why can't there be a clean Salvadoran food place?! Great place for some pupusas and standard Salvadoran fare. Their pupusas are fluffy, not greasy and my favorite are generously stuffed with pork chicharrones, beans and cheese (revueltas). The curtido is a bit on the salty side, which tells me they most likely salt cured the cabbage, not blanched it the traditional way. The salsa (Salvadoran) is a good runny/mild consistency and flavor. I always get the fried plantain plate with runny refried beans (which should be red beans, but are pintos for a more Mexican twist) and they come with a generous portion of crema. Only two stars because the service is a bit slow, and mostly because the place needs a good thorough deep cleaning. There is trash on the lot outside which looks like it's been there for weeks. The tables are clean, but the floors, the windows and such are in desperate need of some 409! I come here mostly for nostalgia's sake. I grew up in El Salvador. Eating the authentic thing sets my standards pretty high, and there's a real lack of good Latin food in the area. Granted I'm newish to the area, still looking for the go-to spot regardless if it's Salvadoran, Mexican, Cuban or other.
Cmon what dont you simple put all the prices in the menu?, thats suspicious and surprise everything overpriced haha, 60 dollars for two people
The food was great. When I used to live in San Jose I would come here all the time. I have not been here in two years and the service is now awful. You could see right into the waitress' shirt (VERY UNPROFESSIONAL), She hardly checked on us, and then we split the tab half cash half credit card total was $43 we gave her a $20 and put the rest on my card. When I checked my account today she kept the $20 AND CHARGED $43 on my card! Of course I would realize it when I am already back home in AZ. Really upsetting. If i happen to go back it will be for take out only because your service sucks.
The food is very salty and the rice isn't fresh. They serve you in big plates but the portions are quite small. They use a pretty strong condiment for the micheladas which doesn't taste good and the shrimps they put on the cup still have shells and they are pretty chewy. You can't tell the shrimp have shells at first glance because they are covered in marinade. In addition, they add the sauce to the tacos instead of bringing you the sauce separately (assume all this is to increase profit and they don'teven ask if you want or not or which sauce you want). The tortilla chips aren' even made of tortilla, but they are the round, pre-bagged nacho type chips (too lazy to cook their own?). The pupusas are ok but that's about it. If you are looking for decent Mexican food you must look for alternatives.
Food was good... the only good thing about the place. Portions small, prices look low, but cost per bite is very high. Customer service is non-existent. I won't be back.
Food was great, I was ignored when I sat down, disappointed. I expect after 10-15 minutes of waiting, someone would come and take my order , was not even busy. I finally went to the counter because I was tired of waiting and ordered something to go. They lack customer service and they do not add their price on the menu, and costly. No bueno
I ask before I order if their tacos are grilled chicken or not. They said yes, but it was not.It was completely boiled chicken. Maybe people like it, but I don't like it at all Hot sauce was great The best taco I ever had in Redwood City
As other patrons have mentioned there are no prices listed on the printed menus. The enchiladas I ordered were rolled tightly with very little meat inside, the mole and green sauces were tastey, however.
The food tasted good, however, 20 minutes after eating, I came to the conclusion that I got food poisoning from eating at this restaurant. No bueno!!
We didn't bother staying. What kind of restaurant doesn't have any prices on their menu? They also didn't have tea as an option, which is one of the most common drinks.
Not good at all. Very expensive and terrible service. Look to spend about 20 a person for very mediocre food with bad service. Had to sit in the canopy area in front due to a shot show I side. Was so cold eating we almost left. Moral of the story, pick another place.
Food was ok. A bit dirty. The server had long nails that she would put in the tomato salsa, as she carried it to the table. I didn’t eat it. So gross.
Too expensive. 2 pupusa 1 coffee + 2 waters came out to the total of 36 dollars. I then ordered 2 sopes to go and they were 8 dollars each when i can get them for 5 at 2 places in Sunnyvale.
I ordered a plain bean burrito for my daughter as she cannot eat anything else. The cashier confirmed it to be beans only. It was for to go and figured this is the simplest order and they are not going to mess it up. Once on the road, of course, we got beans, rice and some carrots. It took 30 minutes to make this buggy burrito.
Don't go here! I got food poisoning and got really sick instantly. The cashier lady is awful, she over charged us by $15 dollars and said accused her of stealing when all we wanted to pay for was 3 items and a coke. (1 Taco, oysters and ceviche all for $51 doesn't add up.) Really bad service overall and first time her but last time, don't risk getting sick!
Do not come here. Service is TERRIBLE. The waiter was not nice at all, and forgot to bring our drinks so we had to ask for them. It took 40 minutes for us to get food and the pupusas weren't even good! They were completely falling apart, no nice crust on the outside. We saw people come in after us, and get served before us. Also CHIPS ARE DISGUSTING. And $63 for 4 people at a place like this, for awful service and crappy food? Better off going to los charros a mile away.
What a terrrrrrible menu and way of ordering you guys need serious work on your availability for this line orders. It’s an absolute mess and as much as I wanted to try them that simple fact has and will keep me from ever ordering from them. You can’t even order rice and beans that’s insane
Really sad to leave this review. We have been ordering from Chalateco for the last few years. Today placed an order for pickup, arrived about ten minutes after it was due to be ready. Was told it’s “almost ready” after waiting for 10 minutes. I had been waiting for 30 minutes when I saw them start the order. I would have preferred an honest answer when I first arrived that they were too far behind to fulfill the order.
So I called and ordered a breakfast veggie burrito no meat no cheese with the Zucchini pupusa and salsa and chips. And what do you know when I find my burrito there is meat in it! No way Jose I will not ever come back here again! There is no room to make any type of mistake like that.
Don’t recommend, Disorganized and messy. Stood in line for 15 min to pay for phone order. After it was my turned the lady gave preference to the guy in the back (skipping two other customers) charging him first because he’s order was more money than mine was. From a customers perspective that’s rude and unprofessional. Never coming back
They announce great Mexican Dishes but the flavor is like a combination of Salvador or Central America food. The “tortilla” are hand made but very thick and is not possible to create a good taco. They do not accept cr dit cards. The service is good
This place just moved itself to my Not Recommended list. It took nearly 10 minutes just to place my order. When my order was ready, she let it sit on the counter for 10 minutes before telling me. And when I got home I discovered – well, you know how EVERY restaurant puts hot sauce in little plastic containers? She put it in a baggie. And then didn't zip the baggie closed. It was a mess. Even though she had managed to find pre-prepared containers of hot sauce for the customer before me. With abominable service like this I definitely recommend avoiding this place.
Over priced food. Waited 35+ minutes after being told only take 15 minutes. Had our order ready first ten minutes only to have to ask them where the order was then they decided to cook the rest of the order 20 minutes later. Really not worth the time. Bad service and they were moping while cooking the food. It's disappointing having a to go order take 40 minutes
Decided to try a new place out, and the employees made me feel not welcomed. I stood at the counter waiting to be acknowledged, and finally, a lady asked how she could help me. Being my first time here, I didn't know if I should order at the counter or be seated. I asked her that but she looked bothered. I sat at the table, and she asked if it was for here or to go from a distance. I stated that I wanted to eat at the restaurant. Moments later, she walked over to my table as if she was annoyed and stared at me. I guess that was my prompt to order. As a customer, I'm not that desperate to eat at a restaurant. There are so many places to go and people don't realize that. After her actions, I decided to leave. I told her that I didn't care for her attitude, and she started to speak Spanish to one of her coworkers. I'm just over poor service.
Very bad service on the phone when they are busy . You need to have some one special for to go . Because they answer and put you on hold for more the 20 min. The to go is very important too .
Don’t go sit waiting for the waiter, just go straight to the bar to order. They didn’t even bother to let me know about it after waiting for 10 mins at the table. The guy who takes order doesn’t understand English. I asked for the rice and beans with burrito, but burrito came alone. Food is not hot, but warm. Very cold inside the restaurant. Music is too loud like at discoteque.
