Opinions de Hokkaido New Paltz
Sushi heaven! We parked and wandered around looking for the establishment. Wood sign, wood fence. Great food! Although we gorged ourselves on some of the freshest sushi, our friends rave about the specialty dishes. The service was attentive without being overbearing. We will be back!
Yes New Paltz has a great sushi spot. Really fresh. It was totally quiet on a Tuesday lunch, nevertheless they are doing some good work there. This place is more on the traditional side, not offering over the top fancy rolls. They do have spicy tuna (not chopped), otherwise authentic and terrific.
I have been to New Paltz twice now, and Hokkaido twice now. I really like the sushi here. Also it has a very family run feeling. They are definitely working their butts off to serve people and it shows. Try the grilled eggplant appetizer, so good.
Best sushi place in the area! The food quality is excellent, and the place is very clean. Highly recommended.
Always crowded for a good reason! Our weekly date night outing because it's the best sushi around and the staff is so sweet! We've been coming for years and have never once had an off meal. Love it!
We had trouble finding really good Japanese when we moved to the Hudson Valley and stumbled upon Hokkaido when the Mexican Kitchen around the corner (also to die for!) was packed. Simple, clean, excellent service, very fresh ingredients... even the standard things like miso soup and dumplings taste homemade. Make a reservation on weekends - those who know about this place are here all the time. Now we are too!!!
Five people in our party. We all agree that the food and service were excellent! Everything tasted fresh and nicely seasoned. The baby bok choy with mushrooms was perfect. Teriyaki seafood dinner is highly recommended as well as the seafood salad. The various sushi rolls were all good. Service was pleasant and timely.
Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in Ulster County. Family owned and run. Unbeatable service. Fantastic hot dishes and fresh sushi and sashimi. #1 in my book!
I'm new to the area and had been looking for a place that served veggie rolls, specifically peanut avocado. If you are a fan, Hokkaido is the place! The Buddha Roll is what you want. I ordered the veggie dinner and substituted an extra Buddha Roll for the sweet potato tempura. Excellent!
Great sushi, sashimi and great specials in a quaint little place! Be sure to make a reservation if you plan to go over the weekend, space is very limited! All ingredients are of excellent quality and crazy fresh. It disturbs me that one of the other reviewers gave them only 2 stars simply because of one evening over the course of 4 years AND to make their complaint here and not directly to the owner, kinda cowardly on many levels...
For fabulous Japanese food in a charming spot in New Paltz this is it! After trying a variety of wonderful dishes here over the years, we settled on a favorite. The staff and service here are equally superb! Can't wait to go back!
My favorite Japanese restaurant in the Hudson Valley. Service is excellent. Sushi is always fresh and very tasty. Great place to dine in or take out. I have never been disappointed.
Very small place but my friends love there sushi. I had steak and spicy noodles and the steak was so salty and fatty not enjoyable at all.
Really good Japanese food, if you can only find the front door. It's like a hidden gem. Dining room is small, especially on a hot summer evening. Tuna Poke was great.
Great fresh food and excellent service. The sushi was delicious, the miso soup was the best I've ever had. They made outstanding fried eggplant miso. We enjoyed everything on our plates.
Absolutely hands down the best place for sushi anywhere. It’s very tiny so reservations are a must. I usually get take out. They really know their stuff here. It’s so good you don’t need to cover it with soy sauce. I come everyone I’m In the area.
What a fabulous Sushi 🍣😋 restaurant. Offers a variety of lovely, unexpected dishes and sushi rolls. I loved every moment there. Service was sweetly solicitous and prompt. You must try it! 💯❤️
Food quality and service excellent amidst a busy atmosphere on a Monday evening. Absolute integrity in their product and delivery. The specials were all so delicious. So enjoyed the experience.
Of all the Japanese Restaurants we frequent, Hokkaido is our favorite. The Sushi always tastes fresh, their Miso soup and Edamame are the BEST we've ever had, and the service is quick and friendly. And, when the weather is nice, we really love having our meals in the charming little courtyard in the back. 5 stars for us!
Hands down one of my favorite place to get sushi in the Hudson valley. The owner is always very welcoming and the food is consistently good. Busy place, but that’s because the food is awesome.
My favorite Japanese restaurant in the New Paltz area. Decent sushi, very good noodle dishes, and nice stir-fried vegetables (which aren't available in most Japanese restaurants, and make it possible to have a relatively low-carb meal here for those who are so inclined). There can be a bit of a wait sometimes. Nice, casual, low-key decor. Service is fine.
I think they are hands down the best sushi in the Hudson Valley. The fish tasty clean and fresh every time, and the staff is very quick to get your meal on the table or ready to go.
Amazing food and servers who are super-sweet and always smiling. If you're looking for somewhere to eat in New Paltz this place also has a nice courtyard, perfect for summer evenings. Also lots of delicious options for vegetarians. The green beans and shiitake mushrooms is delicious.
Simple rolls (not the flashy stuff you get some places), but really good. The atmosphere feels appropriate and the service is prompt. Pricing is average compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area.
Always scrumptious, always cozy. A quietly fun place to relax with friends or grab a quick lunch. The cuisine is craveable. The wait staff is sweet. Japanese farmhouse decor. Love this place!
The best sushi place in New Paltz
Super solid sushi for the Hudson Valley! Definitely the best I've come across. Probably more like a 4 star sushi restaurant, but 5 stars for the fact that it's in new paltz.
First time visitors to New Paltz - we found a table for 6 in the splendid courtyard space. Service, food and atmosphere was excellent.
My kiddos favorite restaurant in New Paltz! Very sweet and thoughtful service and delicious food at grood prices.
Super fresh nigiri and amazing rolls! We ordered 5 rolls and 4 pieces of Nigiri. The owners were just spectacular and very receptive to our needs and actually ordered for us after they listened to what we liked and disliked. The whole experience was amazing and incredibly fresh and satisfying for the soul.
Everyone and everything is great. Best sushi I've had outside Japan, no joke. This is my new go-to Japanese place in the Hudson Valley, it's the best. Do not hesitate. I recommend the yellowtail and jalapeno plate (appetizer).
Hokkaido is my favorite sushi restaurant as well as my husbands. Hokkaido has the freshest ingredients and the most extraordinary crafted sushi rolls! I have introduced family and friends to this restaurant that had never enjoyed sushi however they now ask for a sushi night every couple weeks. The family that has been running this restaurant for years is very nice and appreciative of their regular customers.
We alway look forward to going to Hokkaido for dinner . And we are never disappointed when we are here . The owner Jerry is such a wonderful person, and the people that work under him are always friendly and accommodating. The food is always fresh and delicious. Also it’s amazing to sit and watch the chefs make the sushi with such ease.
I have been on the hunt for excellent sushi in the Hudson Valley. I have certainly tried a few places that I would say are "good". But Hokkaido is hands down the best. It's truly an authentic taste and feel of Japanese culture and food. The fish was fresh and prepared right in front of me so delicately. The staff was warm and welcoming, and again, every piece of sushi I got was simply delicious. It was impressive that this little gem eluded me for so long, but they have certainly gained a customer for life.
We have been going to Hokkaido for 20 plus years and it is wonderful. Food is amazing, place is cozy and authentic, service is great. We go every Friday all year round if that is any indication of how much we love Hokkaido.
Everything you look for in a sushi place. Really nice atmosphere, classic appetizers and maki options as well as their own speciality rolls, with all items fairly priced. The service was great and everything we ordered was delicious. If I lived in New Paltz, this would be my new go-to restaurant for sushi!
I’m gonna be honest, I thought this was a haunted house attraction. I was really excited and going to wait until October, but luckily I only had to wait until 4:30! The food came out super fast and was absolutely delicious. Sorry that I didn’t take pictures. I stuffed my face. Also because the sushi was so stuffed that it was falling apart in my visceral grip. The chicken katsu was also so good that I saved some in my teeth for later. My dog will be having some as well. We will be come back.
A gem in New Paltz. The atmosphere, the service, the food all top notch! You feel transported into a different realm. I love the bright wood decor. Highly recommend everything! I have never been disappointed!
Absolutely love this place. It was my very first sushi experience in the Hudson Valley. Having just recently reopened, I was very excited to return. I order 7 of my favorite rolls for me and a friend. It was all magnificent. Even the vegetarian options were delicious. I can’t recommend them enough.
Great selection, reasonable prices, fantastic quality, delightful atmosphere, and a wonderful staff make this a perfect stop for fresh sushi or most other Japanese dishes. The award-winning sushi is among the highest quality I have ever had anywhere, and all of their ingredients are fresh. I have to drive half an hour to get here, and it's worth every minute, and has been, for the past 22 years that I've been coming to this marvelous restaurant.
Hands down the best sushi in New Paltz. Note: It is a small place so waiting for a table Fridays and Saturdays 6-8 takes a while. Also, when busy ambient noise can make it hard to hear each other
Food was delicious and service was friendly and welcoming. Can’t wait to come back!
Seriously some of the best sushi I have had in a long time ( and I am Houston where we have lots of good options) for the price it was all amazing. Best salad I have ever had at a sushi place. Great service, just a really lovely evening. Definitely recommend tucking in here next time you're in New Paltz
The restaurant looks like an abandoned house. Its sign is almost nonexistent. But the food & service are impressive. Ordered a few sushi rolls, and they were all fresh. We will definitely be back.
I have been going to Hokkaido for decades and never have been let down, the staff hustles like no where else and the food either from the sushi bar or kitchen is always spot on!! Jeri, the owner is an amazing kind man who is focused on the food always being fresh. I have family that will make the trip up from the city just for the Hokkaido experience. Customer for life :)
THE BEST SUSHI IN NEW PALTZ! Ordered last night with friends and the food was delicious! The miso soup is always on point and the sushi tastes super fresh. Friendly staff as well. Our go-to place for sushi. Give it a shot the next time the craving strikes!
We loved this place! The food was delicious, from the Miso soup and salad to all the sushi. The service was also excellent - the waiter and busser were very attentive to continually fill our water glasses and see if we needed anything and to clear finished items off the table. Would highly recommend Hokkaido as a great place to go for sushi!
Absolute best sushi in New Paltz. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive and the food is outstanding.
My favorite sushi place - very well priced and high quality. My favorite is the eel avocado rolls
We love Hokkaido. The owners are wonderful. They remember us and genuinely care about our family. It's also the best sushi in New Paltz- hands down, no contest! Get a mango salmon roll- our favorite!
Easily the best sushi in New Paltz and certainly ranks in the top 5 in the Hudson Valley. Cozy atmosphere, although the decor leaves something to be desired. Usually a wait on Friday and Saturday evenings due to limited seating, but to-go orders are filled pretty quickly. Delicous specialty rolls (Men in Black is a popular favorite) and the wait-staff/ management is very friendly and customer oriented. Only compliant would be that they are frequently out of some of the more unique options like Uni (sea urchin), but I'd rather a sushi place tell me they are out of something than serve week old fish. Overall, I highly recommend.
THE best sushi in the Hudson Valley. Family-owned and top notch sushi chefs have been here for decades. The atmosphere is so cozy inside and their outdoor seating area is nice as well (weather permitting). Their menu has a great selection of Japanese cuisine and their sushi roll menu is very creative.
It’s tucked away down a narrow side street. Understated decor, small and intimate. Avoid wearing big coats and keep your voice down. There’s an outdoor patio as well (weather permitting), if you don’t mind the busier outdoor environment. I’ve been eating here for over 20 years, and 3 girlfriends. When we say we want Sushi, we mean Hokkaido. My child’s first Sushi meal was here. It can be very busy on weekends, especially during pleasant weather. I recommend you call ahead. A very large menu too, so, I recommend you study the menu online and have your ideas ready. They’ll help you with suggestions, but that means you’re slowing us all down. Eating alone, then maybe eat at the bar and enjoy watching the sushi get maid. I recommend the pan fried gyoza, edamame and string beans. I love the spicy rolls, eel and Monster roll. Take out available. Lots of fans order their food for pick up. But, I don’t like to transport my fresh food. Had my first warm Sake here. Loved it. And, above all, service is always excellent and very nice clientele vibe.
I was very impressed with everything about this restaurant with the exception of what they can't control: The parking was a bit of a challenge. Fantastic food, service and fair pricing make the bit of a walk acceptable. Very nice staff and clean interior too.
Service was absolutely incredible—all the staff were so kind and attentive! Food was amazing as well, cannot recommend this place enough.
Everything was delicious! The shishito peppers were on daily special. Also had gyoza, monster roll, and the spicy noodles with shrimp. The service was great, our server was attentive and very nice! Glad we stopped by during our visit in New Paltz.
The food was outstanding. Every dish was presented like a piece of art, and the flavors were fresh, balanced, and authentic. The sushi was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, the salmon and flavorful, and the sashimi incredibly fresh.
Love love love this place. Always fresh with high turn over. Always packed at night and weekends so plan accordingly. Previous owner recently sold the buisness to younger family member so I don't foresee changes in the menu or service. Prices are reasonable and the menu is packed with traditional sushi options.
Small Mom and Pop Sushi in the The town of New Paltz. Be sure to call and see how busy they are as sometimes you’ll be waiting an hour or two just to get a seat. The sushi is the best in town and other items on the menu don’t disappoint. Noteable mentions is the Teriyaki Steak with noodles and the Spicy Cold Noodles.
This place is amazing! Super cute atmosphere, they have indoor and outdoor seating. The sushi is SO DELICIOUS AND FRESH! I had the black dragon roll and the green dragon roll, the eel is sooooo good. I can't wait to come back and try the unagidon. Affordable, delicious, super friendly and family owned. Stop by for a roll!
Hokkaido is in a quiet side street off the main drag and very pretty in a natural setting. Not a big space so it feels intimate. Food is fresh and tasty. Staff is friendly even when we sat pass the closing time. The court yard is great, weather permitting. Special mention is the Hamachi Kama, Salt and pepper broiled yellowtail collar part (Limited Availability) which is excellent with so much meat. Will go back.
We came at a bit of a dinner rush, so the waiter was kind enough to bring us menus and water while we waited outside. The inside is super cute with traditional Japanese decor. They have interesting specialty rolls that caught my eye! I got the Alaskan and the futo maki. The miso soup was DELICIOUS. Really enjoyed the staff and family feel to the place :)
Great sushi near me! Taste fresh with true to style style sushi, and American rolls for the less developed palate. Awesome service. A great place to get your fix! The smoked salmon sushi, is delicious! Try it out
The sushi and drinks were pretty good not amazing table and vibes were decent bathroom 5.4/10
Great Japanese restaurant! The sushi was pretty good, and they have really good teriyaki chicken that comes with some sauteed vegetables. The California roll was good, the avocado roll was good too and the cucumber roll could have been a little better. The highlight of the meal was the Miso soup which was legendary! Best I've ever had! 👏 Great meal overall, will definitely go back. 😀👍
Came here for dinner to try and find a decent sushi restaurant that's close to home, and this didn't disappoint too much. The sushi rice could certainly be seasoned a bit more and was slightly overcooked. The cuts of fish were not very consistent, and the grade was low-mid range. Rather disappointed with the sushi platter as it doubled up pieces of the same fish, offering little variety: 2 pieces of tuna, 3 salmon, 2 yellowtail, and 2 white tuna, with a tuna roll. I had expected 9 different pieces of sushi as is typical of most restaurants. My son loved the chicken karaage, almost ate the whole plate himself, it was quite tasty and certainly worth coming back for him to enjoy. Overall not near the best sushi I've had, but not near the worst, and being how close it is to home I'll likely come by again. I'll lastly say my 4 star review is a bit more generous than it probably should be, but if you're looking for a decent fix for sushi it seems to be a safe bet.
It's really a 3.5 experience. Non-sushi/sashimi dishes were great. Sushi was meh. Staff was very attentive. I wish the spicy tuna roll was fresher. I'm sure they save the freshest fish for whole cut or sashimi. I had a poke bowl which was fresh, but didnt come with rice and needed to - only other components were a small qty of seaweed salad and a handful of avocado cubes). Seemed weak for a bowl. It was a busy Saturday so maybe that was the issue.
The man who took my order was Ssooo nice. We had a miscommunication, and I thought he would be bringing my food out, and he thought I will be going in to get it, and despite the fact that he was indeed very very busy, he did bring it out because I have my granddaughter in the car asleep. Unfortunately the sushi was not very good. The shrimp in the shrimp tempura roll the weakest pidliest little shrimp I've ever seen. I wish the sushi was better.
I had mixed feelings about my recent visit to Hokkaido in New Paltz. On the positive side, the food was genuinely very good — fresh, flavorful, and nicely presented. Definitely worth trying if you’re in the mood for sushi or Japanese fare. However, the experience getting seated was frustrating. When I arrived, there was a clearly open table that would’ve worked perfectly for my party of two. Despite that, two separate staff members told me I couldn’t be seated there, without much explanation. I ended up waiting around 15 minutes — only to watch another couple get seated at that same table shortly after. It left a bad taste in an otherwise enjoyable meal. Good food, but the customer service and seating policy could use improvement.
Yikes. Was craving sushi all day and ordered from here tonight. After a long wait to pick it up, got home and didn't know what we were looking at. The sushi was thrown in the tray like a bag of trash on the sidewalk. The flavor was ok, but didn't know what we were eating because it was mashed together. But at least the fake grass survived the massacre. I understand it was Friday, but highly disappointed. Called about it and the employee was extremely rude on the phone.
Went in for dinner & upon ordering I asked for a kani salad to be brought out as an appetizer with my boyfriends gyozas. he got his appetizer but I didn’t get mine until my whole meal came out. My veggie noodles had a spicy flavor but not like a heat spicy almost like a burn in your mouth from sooo much salt. My boyfriend sadly wasn’t a fan of his sushi or chicken with rice. However the owner of the restaurant came around and checked on the tables and he was very kind.
Despite the food being really good, I will not be returning to this restaurant. I received the incorrect order and the owner claimed that the order was correct and began to raise his voice with me over the phone. It was my second time there and I really liked the food so I came back and ordered the same meal a ume shisho roll and I got a cucumber shisho roll instead I thought it was a mistake so I called and after being yelled at I decided the food wasn't good enough for that treatment. People have bad days and that might have been the case.
My experience has been getting worse here over the years. Dining in to wait an hr and a half for food. Today, second time in a row ordering out to realize they forgot items. And the rolls seem to be worse quality than years ago. Hate writing a bad review, but my experience requires it. Hope they can turn it around. Sushi Tokyo is around the corner…
I’ve been a huge fan of Hokkaido for years, but after the (lack of) quality of the food + poor service I received last night - they won’t be seeing me again. When I arrived to pick up my take-out, they could not confirm that all of my items were in the bag. When I asked if we could check, they said it should be fine and whisked me away. Sure enough, items were missing. The food we did have was sub-par, and when we called back to see if we could come get the things we were missing - we were told to ‘hold’ and then hung up on. I hate to see such a historically great place go down the drain, but at least another great sushi place is right up the street.
Terrible service. After standing around for a few minutes and no acknowledgement from the staff (several were in eyesight) we seated ourselves, and got up again a few minutes later to give ourselves menus. Only 2 waitresses on staff and they misunderstood each of our orders and forgot any addition/substitution we asked for and they wrote down! Each of us had to send a plate back. They included 15% tip on the check for a party of fewer than 6, but the service did not even deserve that. Food is pretty good and ambiance is really lovely.
Terrible service. We waited for 15-20 minutes just to order food and almost 1 hour to finally have it on the table. The food was something ok but not maki rolls. they were just awful - falling apart in a dish when you try to take it, the rice was just not right type of rice for sushi and rolls, it was just like clay. Overall - just terrible
Got food poisoning from this place. Do not recommend this place.
I hate to give this place a one star review because the food was actually pretty good. The problem was with our waiter who seemed like he wanted to get us out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. He was very condescending and explained to me how a tip on the bill works about three times for some reason, then asked if we had any questions as if we had never been to a restaurant before. It was overall a very strange experience that took away from the decent food.
Let me start by saying that I have never taken the time to post a review for any restaurant before. I just couldn’t let this one slide…I’ve been a New Paltz local for 31 years and have known Hokkaido to have very good sushi. It has been over a year since I ordered sushi here. Last time I got sushi I loved it. This time we decided to try something different and ordered the chicken teriyaki. It was dry and bland. Almost no teriyaki flavor. Basically just a plate filled with grilled chicken which was about on par with the chicken I cooked when I first started cooking for myself. Hands down the worst chicken I have ever gotten at a restaurant! Total bummer considering how good the sushi is (or was, not sure if it still is good or not). Do not get the teriyaki chicken!
Terrible customer service. The lady there was so rude. Asked her how long the wait would be, she rudely said she wouldn't tell us or accommodate us unless she knew the 6 of us were going to dine there. Made sense why we walked into an empty restaurant on a saturday night, but she still claimed that there was not any room. We would've been fine waiting but cut the stank attitude lady. First impressions count.
I tried to go on Saturday. They could not give me an idea how long the wait would be. I said I had a party of 4 and would wait. The hostess told me they could not seat a party of 4. I ended up going to a sushi restaurant on Main street that was really good.
Hokkaido is a really cute spot. It has a chill vibe, stylish, welcoming. But the food...horrible! I ordered the Phoenix roll (basically a chicken tempura roll), and the chicken was dry and tasted like plain overcooked white meat. I also tried the Monster roll and spicy salmon. They were big but weirdly chunky. The garden salad? Came with pineapples and raisins. 🤷🏾♀️ I tossed $42 worth of food in the trash. Not making that 30 min drive again. Super disappointed.
We should have left as soon as we tasted the tap water, which must have been from the sewer. But we were SO hungry. We asked about gluten free food and the server checked and returned, confirming what we ordered was gf. It wasn’t. He took back the mushroom roll and brought us buckwheat noodles with no sauce. Where is the sauce? It wasn’t gf. Why they didn’t tell us prior to that, I don’t know. A friend ordered mushroom soup and almost puked bc it was made with the same sewer water. It was taken off our bill. From now on, if the water is gross in a place, we’re leaving the restaurant.
Worst sushi I’ve had in a while. Texture was off, it was completely drowned in spicy mayo probably to make up for the lack of freshness / flavor. I definitely wouldn’t recommend spending your money here for such below average sushi.
Last nite our 25 th anniversary we decided to do sushi at Hakkaido.. we waited just over an hour for our food which was uncooked , shrimp were under cooked and the tempura batter like goo.. our waiter was MIA didn’t offer to top off my green tea or offer my hubby another drink as his glass sat empty. Our waiter failed to put in our order as we arrived around 610 pm order in at 640 we were not served until 730 or so I got up and asked where our food was …it was crowded and people were coming ordering and eating and we were just sitting there being blatantly ignored ! What a joke and all we got were excuses…no free dessert offer or even discount on bill for what had happened.. They smile and make excuses for poor service and uncooked food. The old guy took my tempura back and within minutes had a new one for me , so why did we wait alittle over hour for 6 simple rolls they were bringing out for other guests with no problem? My hubby was pissed and just disappointed, paid the bill and we left. When we first met 25 years ago it was over sushi in an amazing restaurant so this was pretty nostalgic for us …just a huge let down and such a lack of care and communication and service. To make excuses instead of making things right cost you this negative review and we won’t go back. We left 0 tip as you didn’t even deserve a paid bill for such a awful experience.
Miso soup had added sugar. Squid sashimi was soapy. Crab sashimi was imitation crab. Octopus was tasteless. Gyoza was good. Overall not what i hoped for. My friend said salmon in sushi was not good. We eat out a lot in NYC and NJ, apparently new paltz has no good food to walk in on a weekend.
