The fact that I was able to find a restaurant / nihongo grocery store really made my day. And in case anybody is wondering, the food is very good!
I ordered the wappa meshi pick up today and it's SOOOO DELICIOUS! Just great flavor and texture mixture. Will definitely come back and try other things
Very authentic and wonderful Japanese cuisine. My favorites are Okonmitaki, Katsu, and Wappa-Messi. The price is decent and the taste is very good. Highly recommend!!
We got a beef bowl, katsu don, and tempura. All were very delicious! There's also a small grocery section with snacks, pantry goods, and freezer as well as meat for sukiyaki and shabu shabu. Love having this in the area.
The pork katsu curry here is really good. Crispy, thick, and tender pork. There’s also a good selection of sake to pair with your food.
Excellent fried chicken and many Japanese dishes, freshly made to order. Also great shop for frozen and fresh foods like fish cakes and noods.
Very friendly store, geared to being helpful, with a take-out restaurant at the back. The spicy tuna onigiri was to die for. Made fresh to order.
Great little store to pickup the Japanese groceries I need. Really friendly staff, and they make really nice fresh onigiri pretty quickly while you wait, the salmon one was tasty!
Such great food, and great service. My go-to for a quick onigiri, or some insanely crispy katsu
Love this place! They have really good food, I always get onigiri (rice balls) and snacks! Incredible customer service and a wide selection.
Ordered udon with takoyaki and a rice ball and it was all delicious! Great prices too. Just moved to the area and am happy to have a place like this near by.
This place is just fantastic. The rice balls are made to order and taste just like the ones I had in japan. Highly recommend the spicy salmon!
katsu sandwich was very good and they have some really great local japanese products - def a must stop and local gem.
Very kind staff, delicious onigiri, nice range of items you can’t find at nearby grocery stores
Cute little grocery shop that also does cooked food! Love the variety of products in the shop. Tried the chicken katsu curry which was amazing.
A little neighborhood gem for a nice japanese takeout or to pick up some supplies. Food order was delicious, misokatsu Don and Pork Shogayaki. Picked up a few treats as well. I will be back 👍
Delicious onigiri with generous filling to rice ratio. Cashier was super kind as well.
All fresh vegetables including poplar Japanese items! Beautifully wrapped/packaged ! Super friendly and polite staffs ! Love Shinbashi 72 !
absolute UWS gem. I've experimented with so many new ingredients :) prices are fair, selection is curated but still diverse--a truly wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
this place is so good, all the food is fresh and incredibly comforting. perfect place to grab a delicious lunch. I love the onigiri
A 5* place, get a bento box to go and enjoy in nearby park, you'll live it. My friend had a bed bowl, he was also very happy.
The food is delicious and the owners are so kind. They pack takeaway with care.
great spot good food, friendly staff
Their onigiri is made to order and is so much better than cold, day-old stuff. Love this place!
Very friendly service, great suggestions and tasty food. Limited seating is unfortunately not available. We enjoyed our lunch very much!
I love this place. It is a small shop with warm ambiance. Even though there’s not lots of goods to choose from, but the foods is made FRESH by order even the rice ball. The food is absolutely delicious. 11/10 RECOMMENDED
Really good for quick lunch foods, the onigiri is delish
Delicious food, can't wait to have it again. The katsu curry rice and gyoza were fantastic. The curry was super flavorful and it was a good value for the money. I highly recommend this new Upper West Side Japanese restaurant. The store itself has lots of Japanese snacks for sale which I'll certainly be trying soon.
This place is soooo good! Best onigiri with so many options-so fresh and delish! Their oden is to die for-so hard to find and they do it so well. Honestly everything I’ve had here is great. Highly recommend. Yum!
Favourite neighborhood spot! Loved every dish I’ve tried here, but the onigiri is particularly great and convenient to take to the airport picnic etc. service is very friendly and the best place to get my vegetable shop!
Amazing food! The onigiri was absolutely delicious, the mochi amazing! The chicken was also great and I'm about to dig in to my udon. The service was also great! Everyone was so kind. Can't wait to go back because they have such a huge selection!
Please get the Unaju!!! It's worth every penny spent. Seriously. You can taste the love that went in to making it. When the chef cares about the food and the customer, you can tell in the quality and taste. For authentic, home-style cooked Japanese food, for me this is my new spot. Also a plus that you can see the kitchen and the chef making the food.
Sooo good and so cheap!!! Onigiri is the best I've had in the city and so fresh!
The rice balls are INCREDIBLE- highly recommend the unagi, shitake and the shrimp tempura ones! So tasty, fresh and delicious! They also deliver for free and it’s a family owned business! It’s my roommates and my fav food in this area!
The food was amazing. I ordered a pork katsu curry rice bowl and it was AMAZING. Although for some reason, it took them a lot longer than usual for them to prepare my food, they felt bad and gave me a complimentary gummy snack!
Ordered the Pork Katsu Curry Rice, Wappa Meshi, and Salmon Onigiri. Food was prepared promptly and packaged very well! The dishes were flavorful, tasty, and very filling. Next time, will have to peruse some of the shelves instead of ordering ahead. Will be back again soon!
Such a neighborhood gem. A 3rd generation family owned shop with delicious prepared food along with a great variety of Japanese ingredients, snacks, desserts, food, and rice. I’ll definitely be coming back to keep trying their menu
This place is almost a hidden gem of the UWS. The good here is always so incredibly tasty. Delivery is also super quick. I highly recommend visiting in person and checking out their selection of Japanese snacks and frozen products! Such a great place to have and couldn't recommend it more.
Today was their opening day and I was curious to try this place. I ordered Miso Soup, Chicken Katzu and Chicken Kara Age to pick-up. The order was ready for me after 10 minutes. The dishes were tasty and the people running the business were very kind. I will try other dishes in the near future. It worth to try in my opinion.
They just opened up recently.. Love love their food and the grocery items. Great addition to the neighborhood. I’m writing this review while having their Takoyaki at this very moment. Yummy! I’ve had vegetables curry, eel, udong, 3 different types of Mochi, dry squid snack, onigiri so far. All of them were fresh and delicious. Oh, they also have Ramyun, which is the best carbon drink in the whole world.
Visiting NYC for a family trip and my 7 year old asked specifically to have his fav food: onigiri. Tried the tuna Mayo, spicy tuna, and umeboshi onigiri as well as the chicken tonkatsu sandwich and took to nearby park to eat. Picked up some Japanese tea drinks as well. All excellent home cooking! Small but good selection of produce, snacks, and things like furikake and noodles. I would come here all the time if I lived here.
I've had a hankering for some Takoyaki since Monday, thanks to some random YouTube video of Japan. I searched for some place close to the Bronx, read good reviews on this place and decided to try them. Boy do I have to thank yelpers & reviewers for recommending this place as I never walk down this street on 72 and would prob never have gone in. The food is delish & legit. The takoyaki was everything I wanted, no soupy wet mess inside. The Udon noodles were spot on & the broth had a nice, clean unami flavor + their rice ball was an awesome surprise. All I have to say is to try them out, I didn't try their pork katsu or any of their curry dishes even tho the reviews are good. I will go back soon.
Fantastic local spot to buy Japanese groceries, snacks, and lunch. The owners are Japanese and very friendly. If you are looking for authentic and imported Japanese goods in the Upper West Side, be sure to stop by.
Amazing home-cooked Japanese fare with a nice grocery section as well. Highly recommend their pork katsu curry and onigiri but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.
So good! Onigiri (spicy kani) was awesome. Curry udon is also delicious— I generally have a pretty good spice tolerance but they’re not joking when they say it’s spicy :.)
Excellent Japanese mini-market with a nice selection of snacks and groceries. The kitchen is awesome and so are the ladies running the show!
Excellent staff, selection, prices, and food. Just going in to smell what they’re cooking is nice.
Tried the Katsu Curry and all the apps, everything felt like home-style Japanese comfort food. They're on a limited menu during their first few weeks of opening, but I look forward to coming back for the ready-made Sandos and canned coffees like you find in all over Japan in vending machines.
A nice family run store with great Japanese food made to order, as well as plenty of snacks and Asian grocery essentials. A nice cross between take out and convenience store. Super friendly staff and worth checking out!
I've been coming to Shinbashi 72 for a while now - initially for the katsu curry (which is easily the best in the neighborhood) - but I keep coming back because everyone who works here is SO KIND. Truly a local gem.
The adorable Japanese "fast food" take out we didn't know we needed. Onigiri wrapped so seaweed stays crisp, katsu perfectly done. Takoyaki balls that hold up well to take out and delivery. What's not to love? Note: Americans: protein servings are Japanese size (3 - 4 oz), so smaller than you may be used to. Bonus for UWS: small selection of groceries that I used to go to midtown or Mitsuwa in NJ for: green tea Kit Kats, sushi rice and Pocky. So happy this spot opened during pandemic!
This place is amazing!!! The food is excellent and the deserts are delicious. I had gyudon with beef and rice and it was great. The rice tastes good with the beef. I also had bento and the samon tastes like it just came from the river. I so recommend this place! Recommend mochi doughnuts.
They have the best katsu curry
Perfect authentic Japanese homemade comfort food (restaurant quality for such good price)! It also has a small supermarket section for Japanese snacks and sweets. My go-to for all kinds of Japanese treats.
I was really craving Japanese food, which to me is one of my comfort foods, and this place delivered!! Their katsu pork is the perfect level of crisp, and their rice is itself so tasty. My only regret is that I didn’t get the katsu curry - I mistakenly ordered the katsu with dipping sauce, which was great, but now looking at photos of their curry, I think I missed out! I’ll definitely definitely be back.
I really take for granted the little slice of heaven (Japan) that we have in the UWS. Japanese comfort food at its best!!
Great Japanese grocery store with fresh takeout meals. Compact but has everything you need for Japanese food. Takeout food is made to order! The staff are always very friendly! So happy to see this store in the UWS!
This adorable grocery story is my favorite spot on the upper west side, and really all of manhattan, for amazing Japanese food, snacks, and groceries! The cold udon is my absolute favorite meal, simple but refreshing, and there are so many onigari flavors to choose from 😌 super friendly and helpful workers, I can’t recommend it enough
favorite spot for onigiri and Japanese grocery needs! the people who run this store are always so friendly and helpful- every time I’m here is a pleasure. the kind of local business we need to protect! I like to come here before hmart, and then go to hmart afterwards for anything I couldn’t find here.
This place is amazing! The kindest employees and a great variety of Japanese snacks, drinks, and food! I haven’t tried anything on the menu that wasn’t amazing. This place is a must go!
So fantastic to have a good Japanese market in the neighborhood!! The range and quality of their snacks is top tier, and it’s my spot to get Kewpie Mayo when I’m running low. The fresh and hot food is delicious too, I’d say get the takoyaki.
A charming market and food spot. I only ever get their snacks but it’s always fresh and tasty. One of my favorite places for a quick cheap bite in the city.
I love coming here for onegiris! I have to take the time to try all their other food items, although the customer service is excellent and they carry specific japanese bet indulge in that i can't find anywhere else.
This place is a gem!!! It’s one of my favorite spots in NYC, hands down. The onigiri are delicious and so is the chicken katsu curry. And the ladies at the front are the nicest people you’ll ever meet. 10/10!
Friendly and consistent spot, has a lot of my go-to grocery items/brands as well as toiletries. I prefer to go here first, then go to H-mart for the rest if I’m shopping only in the neighborhood.
Shinbashi is hands down one of my favorite restaurants on the Upper West Side, and it’s one of those rare gems that you just can’t stop visiting once you’ve discovered it. Every time I go, I’m reminded of why I keep coming back—it’s not just the food. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly friendly and kind. From the moment you walk in, they make you feel like family, always greeting you with a smile and ensuring you have everything you need. I am completely addicted to their pork katsu curry udon and bento boxes (that karaage and ginger pork are no joke!). The quality of the food is always top-notch, and you can tell that the kitchen takes great pride in preparing each dish. If you’re in the Upper West Side and haven’t been to Shinbashi yet, do yourself a favor and go!
Yummy chicken katsu curry, good selection of Japanese groceries. I like their onigiri as well! Good place for all things Japanese.
Really really good we went there and found snacks and food that we couldn’t find anywhere else outside of Japan itself. We also ordered some of their hot food and we didn’t have to wait long and it was absolutely delicious! They had a lot of choices too especially for onigiri so makes a great snack! After that we had some of the wafer ice cream sandwiches for dessert and it made for a perfect evening! Shame we are from far away otherwise we would definitely be stopping by more! Only thing you should know is there is no seating as it is a grocery first and foremost.
Excellent chicken katsu curry. The curry is buttery, and nicely spiced. The chicken is crispy. It's on par with places I've tried & liked in Japan. I enjoyed the default spice level but those used to western standards may find it unexpectedly spicy.
I was so happy to discover this place in my neighborhood. It's easy to miss if you're just walking past but worth a visit. Despite being very small inside, they stock all of the basics you need for japanese home cooking, plus a bunch of snacks and frozen foods. They have top quality hard to find fresh vegetables like massive daikon and gobo. They also have this amazing yumepirika rice from Hokkaido that I have become obsessed with. The rice section alone gets this place 5 stars in my book. I'm honestly shocked at the variety they pack into the small store. The fresh food is good too, my favorites are the oden and the onigiri. The ladies that work at the checkout counter are also super friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area
Great selection of Japanese ingredients! Their food is also really tasty and well priced. My go to place to get take out. The people who work here are so sweet and caring. Highly recommend stopping by if you want to get some food or groceries😊
Bruh 1st I want to say that these Aunties and Uncles are very very polite and welcoming. I had found them on Yelp at 1st ordered 3 rice balls 🍙(spam/mayo, kani/mayo, tuna/mayo)and the chicken curry katsu. Awesome 🤩 can’t even describe this food. I went again today and got Kani/Mayo rice 🍙, Katsu Sando (chicken) also they have these frozen ice cream type fish things 😋 shiny aomori and finally kimchi. The atmosphere to me and the way they treat their customers is beyond astonishing. Awesome food awesome service and a variety of other imported goodies. I highly recommend this shop 🤩🤩🤩
If you’re looking for a meal that’s both delicious and delightfully unique, this spot delivers in every way! Lots of various tasty rice and noodle dishes. Loved the eel! And as if the food wasn’t enough, the attached Asian grocery store is an absolute gem! It’s stocked with classic favorites you know and love, alongside new flavors and treats just waiting to be discovered.
A neighborhood gem!!! Best onigiri - cold fish, hot rice, crunchy seaweed (the tuna onigiri is my favorite). We also love their beef soba! The flavor of the broth can’t be beat.
Such a cool Japanese bodega with a huge variety of products and the freshly made food is excellent. A great spot to shop and grab a bite.
Japanese Grocery & To-Go Food Tried it for the first time. The food is freshly made, so you’ll need to wait about 10–15 minutes for your order. There’s no seating available—it’s strictly for pick-up and take-out. Overall, the food was okay.
Got the pork katsu curry rice to go and had it after walking about 30 blocks. The curry is much better than what I expected, deeply savoury and also surprisingly spicy (which is good). The pork katsu is generously portioned, tender and crispy as it was packed very well. I’m pleasantly shocked by how good this is Note: it does come with red pickles. They are hidden under the katsu
Let's start by saying I LOVED THIS RESTAURANT. I noticed it didn't have many reviews so you can never be too sure what you'll get but I was super, pleasantly surprised! It turned out to be exactly what I had expected and it definitely delivered on my high expectations! There's a Japanese curry place my husband and I fell in love with when visiting San Francisco and we have been craving something like that ever since. Well this place definitely hit the spot! We ordered our food online through their online ordering system (easy peasy) and then went to pick it up. We were adventuring the city (it's cold right now) so we decided to it it in the car. My goodness!!! We ordered a pork katsu with curry rice and an order of takoyaki and nothing disappointed. The katsu was crispy and moist inside and the curry had a perfect balance of sweetness. The takoyaki was delicious with the amazing creaminess and chew you would expect! Flavors and textures all on point! We almost placed another order just so we could take it home! Inside the restaurant there is a small snack section you can peruse and purchase from as well. It gave it a cute Japan vibe because of the cute/small size of the restaurant. I really will be back as soon as I can! Loved it!
This new spot on 72nd is delicious. The karage and pork katsu with curry are both outstanding. The curry sauce is beyond tasty and the pork katsu perfectly crisp and tender. The chicken karage is also crispy and tender and comes with a delicious spicy dipping sauce. My wife got the udon and the one bite she shared was also delicious. She also enjoyed the salmon rice balls and gyoza. Prices are very reasonable and the staff very courteous. Can't wait to go back!
Nice employees and clean store. The onigiri here is yummy, my favorites were spicy salmon, and spicy tuna. The Chicken karaage was good too. Would definitely come back!
Nice store located in a good location and closed to my home for some Japanese groceries and food. I can buy some fresh Asian produces in small portions so that I will be able to use them in a timely manner and return for more. I also like the variety of products there. My kids would love shopping in Shinbashi 72! Their shrimp tempura udon noodle soup was good, but the shrimps were soften when we brought the food home. It’s probably better to eat it as soon as it’s done.
Awesome Japanese fast casual place with delicious comfort food. The onigiri (Japanese rice balls) are made to order. What! Delicious and fresh. I’m so there. Curry, teriyaki, and don dishes are amazing. They provide the subtle and nuanced flavors that are unfailingly Japanese.
Imagine my excitement when a casual Japanese resto opened on W72nd! There's an influx of Japanese restaurants in this area now, so having the Japanese curry void filled is welcomed! Ordering and paying over the phone was effortless, I even received a call back saying my order would be ready in 5 mins, making sure my food was hot and delicious when I picked up. The pork katsu curry was the perfect comfort food on a cold Nov day. We also enjoyed the beef bowl, which was a nice size portion and flavorful. While the food was fairly priced, quickly prepared and tasty, the service was equally impressive. The family who has opened this restaurant obviously takes pride in their food and service. It's a great addition to the neighborhood and I hope the UWS supports this new business in the area.
A friendly neighborhood Japanese supermarket that also offer traditional hot dish such as katsu don, curry, and udon. The cashier was sooooo nice and its such a pleasant experience especially in big city like NYC. Hot entree is about same price as sit-down restaurant but quality and quantity makes it ok. Grocery is pricey compare to other Japanese grocery though enough selection if you dont feel like making a trip downtown to other similar stores. Overall will come back again if in the area.
Best Japanese groceries and restaurant!! Legit family run business, authentic Japanese groceries and food. Restaurant menu includes staples like onigiri and katsu sando. Can also pick up staples for your pantry like furikake and dashi. They even have Pasco Shokupan (sliced bread) like from the conbini!! I couldn't believe it.

Neighborhood gem, 2 in 1 Japanese grocer and takeout/delivery. I love coming here, the staff is so incredibly friendly giving you that same amazing level of customer service you might expect at a store in Japan. My son loved the pancake mix and rice crackers and I love the chicken katsu from the restaurant!
I love this store so much!! People working there are all nice and friendly, groceries are always fresh & great prices!! There are variety of Japanese sweets that I can't resist!! Must go store in the Upper West Side!!
Sweetest little market!! Everyone is so nice and the spicy salmon onigiri is to die for!!! They also have a lot of nice sweet treats!
Feb 2026 update: truly a neighborhood gem! I'm definitely not a regular (I don't do takeout much!) but was warmly greeted upon entering while picking up an online order with a "long-time-no-see." Hospitality and A+ memory of your customers? Yep! Oh and the oyakodon was delicious, of course :) Original: The groceries are good but they also have meals and light bites made to order, such as onigiri. So glad they are in the neib! And yes, the staff are also so cheerful and helpful

Small Japanese grocery/eatery serving authentic cooked Japanese food. The grocery section has some of the more difficult to find Japanese sundries. Great place for lunch or dinner.
I love my neighborhood Japanese store, but the food is just not as good and everything’s pricier than other Japanese stores. I have no complaint as long as they’re paying the people well as they all are very nice. I picked up a curry with chicken cutlet which is a common Japanese but the curry was VERY spicy and you’ll need triple the amount of rice to finish it. My tongue was numb after just a few bites. The taste is good, wish it wasn't super spicy and more vegetables in it, but it is a convenient place when you need something!
Shinbashi 72 is a mini Japanese grocery store in UWS with a restaurant in the back for take-out / delivery. Although the selection is limited, it’s convenient for picking up basic Japanese groceries when you don’t want to go all the way to midtown, downtown or NJ. As for the restaurant, my initial experiences after it opened were not great, so I’d only been here for groceries. It’d been a while, so I decided to give it another try recently and the Katsu Curry Rice ($16+) was great. So I just ordered it again for lunch today. I can’t speak to the other menu items, but would recommend the Katsu Curry Rice if you’re looking for homemade curry with crispy katsu and good white rice. The preparation time is pretty quick and their service is friendly, too.

Convenient Japanese grocery store. The only thing that I don't care much about is that this place is filled with the smell of noodle soup. It's so strong that it comes with you even after you get out of this place.
This is not a restaurant and they do not have Sushi. But the food is good. The fried chicken is good. Takeout only Japanese grocery store. Prices are not cheap.
Strongly suggest order in advance. Although everything is freshly prepared.. the portions are very small not worth the price they charge. Maybe as a market ok. Otherwise skip it.
OK food for takeout but not good enough to compete with Zurutto and other similar restaurants on 72nd St. Food was ready on time and packaged nicely. Wrappa Meshi suffered from having only 3 small pieces of salmon. Vegetables and sauce not memorable. The sauce they use on their Katsu (chicken or pork) really isn't that good. I've had way better katsu. Udon noodles were OK, but definitely I'd pick Zurutto ramen over this anytime.
They sold me an expired product and when I tried to ask for a refund they didn’t allow it. They said it was discounted because it is expired so would not offer a refund. 1) why are you selling expired products, and 2) didn’t even bother letting me know that they’re selling me an expired product. This whole practice is very shady, they could easily make it right than refund me $3. A LOT of things in store are expired and they’re not telling customers. But they would rather secretly sell expired products and try to get away with it. So always check the expiration before buying anything from here.
I rarely wrote bad reviews. It’s sad as an owner you still don’t understand the problem and defend nonsense. Basically you allowed my dog in your store, and then kicked me out right after I paid. Then in next 20 minutes, I was standing out of the store without any updating. 2 times I came in briefly asking about status, you just ask me GET OUT without updating me when will be ready. It’s super rude. Thus I gave up my meal and told you to give to homeless. I have Japanese friends gave bad comments about your store, but I still shop your store for many years. Now I’m done with your store. Good luck!
