Opinions de A Salt & Battery New York
it was yummy! i ordered the cod and a side of chips to-go but ended up eating there. the food came in a paper tray wrapped in a large sheet of paper which felt interesting and a bit unique. the batter on the fish was super crunchy, and the cod itself was moist and flaky. the tartar sauce was just okay, not quite what I’m used to. everything is fried to order, so it comes out piping hot. the chips are ordered separately but plated together. they have vinegar and salt on the side for you to add. a little pricey, but overall solid fish and chips that satisfied the craving. service was okay, and the shop itself is cute. just beware if you sit inside the shop, you will end up smelling like oil!
In the top 3 fish & chip places I’ve experienced in the USA. Small inside but just like a lot of “chippies” back home. If you’re visiting NYC and want a taste of home, try it 😁
Salt & Battery was an excellent experience. The food was outstanding — fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you expect when you come for proper fish and chips. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The place is small, but that actually makes the experience feel more personal. The person who takes your order also brings the food to your table, which adds a nice, attentive touch. Overall, excellent food and excellent service. I would definitely come back and highly recommend it. Lenny Javier
Lovely hole in the wall serving authentic UK fish and chips. Multiple fish options available; I went with haddock and it was excellent. The chips are hand-cut and delicious. Absolutely the best tartar sauce I’ve ever had! Atmosphere is a simple, clean, no-nonsense Brit-punk vibe. The proprietor is very pleasant and service is quick.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Salt & Battery is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by friendly staff and a warm, relaxed atmosphere. The food is outstanding—perfectly cooked, full of flavour, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The fish is light, fresh, and beautifully crisp, with golden chips that are fluffy on the inside and seasoned just right. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and everything arrives hot and fresh. What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail and the genuine passion for great food and service. Whether you’re a regular or visiting for the first time, A Salt & Battery delivers every single time. Highly recommended—can’t wait to return! Stopped by A Salt & Battery and really enjoyed it. The fish was very good fresh, crispy, and cooked perfectly. The chips were just as good, super flavorful and not bland at all. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the food came out quickly, which was a nice bonus. Solid spot if you’re craving classic fish and chips.
So....let me be clear, English fish and chips are not highly seasoned, which is fine for me, but my fried haddock is frech, meaty and fried perfectly every time. The tartar sauce is what makes the fish even more amazing. Make sure you order extra tartar sauce. The cole slaw has a vinegar/mustard, creamy over tone, which I loved. I also had rhe onion rings which were too pretty to eat, but I ate them anyway. I don't like a lot of salt, but it needed a pinch, for my taste. Same with the "chips" they need a pinch of salt, which is a minor detail. Please eat this food right away and call to order just before you are ready to pick up for the optimal experience.
Such a fun little fish & chips spot! The cod was the star of the show, super flavorful and crispy in the best way. The hardock was okay, not really my thing, but still worth a try. Everything came out hot, crunchy, and super satisfying. They also have fun soda drinks to try out too. Great portions, good vibes, and definitely a spot I’d hit again when I’m craving fish & chips.
The experience was like a quick trip to the UK for about $30 instead of a $300 flight. The tiny place reminded me of a traditional chip shop somewhere in Greenwich or Romford neighborhoods in London, where I used to stay. My order was fish and chips with mushy peas on the side and a bubbled Dandelion and Burdock drink. The chips came with a flavorful savory sauce. The fish was cooked very well, and my overall experience was very positive.
Highly recommend this spot to any brit that is now in the area or travelling. It was a dearly missed taste of home. The chips were propper chippy chips, the potato fritters were amazing. (They call them potato dabs) I suppose it's a regional thing south vs. north Britain. Also the curry sauce was excellent as was the very friendly staff. Great customer service. Will absolutely go back next time im in NYC.
Has to be the best fish & chips in town! The batter was so light and crispy, and the fish (we tried Cod, Haddock & Sole) was fresh and flaky. The chips were golden and perfectly cooked — though you’ll want to salt them to your taste. And that tartar sauce? Tangy, garlicky, and made just right 👌. Honestly felt like having proper British fish & chips. Pro tip: a splash of malt vinegar takes it over the top!
If you're looking for a taste of the UK, A Salt & Battery is the real deal. Forget everything you know about American-style fish and chips—this is the very definition of a traditional British chippy. The food is delicious, with the fish being a standout. It's incredibly soft and flaky, not at all chewy, encased in a perfectly crisp batter. It's clear they've mastered the art of frying. The chips are thick-cut and savory, just as you'd expect. While it's not a spot for a large group dinner, it's a fantastic place for a quick bite or a casual hang out in the neighborhood. The service is also wonderful—very friendly and welcoming.
The picture shown is the small plate, such a big portion, and I did get the haddock over the cod, with chips. The tartar sauce has a little bit of a Brown mustard taste to it. It’s counter seating with about seven seats, if you go out a busy time, there won’t be any word to sit. So delicious and I must try!
I love that this place is in a row of British shops. It’s nice that they have a bench outside too because the indoor seating is minimal—definitely more of a to-go place. The food was really good and it was exactly like you’d get it in the UK, but the prices are fairly steep. The portions are good and my dad and I were able to split a large fish (cod) and chips but it was still like over $35. The cashier was actually British though so that’s always an auspicious sign!
Ordered the lunch special which includes regular haddock, fries, and bottled water. The haddock was the smallest I have had there, maybe 4” by 5”, thin at the front end, and very thin at the tail end such that the last half inch was so thin as to be indistinguishable from the batter. Chips were plentiful, generally small, and not very crispy. I requested hot sauce for the fries and rather than bring given the Cholula bottle at the front counter, that I was told was “For us,” and which I had used during a previous visit, I was given a small cup poured from an almost empty generic quart bottle in the back. I certainly did not get my money’s ($16.60) worth. The piece of haddock should have been used for their fish bites, not as a filet for lunch.
I had such high hopes for this place because the fish and chips look like the ones I had in London, I was not impressed. It was not bad, but I guess my expectations were too high. The fish was not the most crispy and the batter was falling off as I was eating it. The highlight was the tartar sauce, it was great! And the people who work there were lovely. They also have fried mars bars for those who want to try it. That being said I don't think I'll be back.
I love fish and chips but I didn't like this. The fish didn't have much flavor and the chips were tiny pieces. The fish also didn't stay in the batter and felt mushy when eating it. I preferred the fish and chips in times square. We were very disappointed after hearing this place was so good but it didn't live up to what we were expecting. They also do not carry lemon or fountain drinks.
Brits in New York looking to get our authentic F&C fix, The chips were pretty good, but the fish was inedible! it was watery, mushy and yellow, and it just slid right out of the batter. It tasted genuinely awful. Liquid literally pour out of the batter when we cut into it. Such a shame as the batter was nice and crispy. The tartare sauce was not like any I'd had before, it almost tasted like hummus. Sorry I don't like writing bad reviews but it was such a disappointment.
The service is great and the guy behind the counter is really chill so for that I'll give them 5 stars. But the food does not stand up to the hype. I got the Cod and it was mushy & tasteless inside and out. the house sauce really didn't have any flavor. The fries didn't look or taste like real coated double-fried chips. In fact, they are just regular French Fries. The coleslaw was unbelievably without any flavor too and had more mayo than cabbage. Tables were dirty and sticky i wasn't eating in so im not going to say much about that. Again.... the staff is really nice and I appreciate them but I would never return. Please visit at your own discretion
A Salt & Battery was just okay. The fish had a nice crispy coating but lacked seasoning, so it felt a bit bland. The garlic sauce was the highlight, adding much-needed flavor. Their $16 lunch combo (fish, chips, and water) is a decent deal, but overall, the food didn’t stand out. It’s an alright spot if you’re in the mood for fish and chips, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.
the gummiest batter… like hard stale rubbery cake on top of fish. was such a chore to chew my jaws hurt. isnt seasoned doesnt taste like anything either. just over cooked and too much flour. over mixed fryer not hot enough fish wasnt salted or wiped off before. same thing with the onion rings. tried one of every fish option too. crazy how this is the one thing you should know how to do well and you cant.
