Opinions de Breads Bakery New York
Breads Bakery is the best bakery cafe in Tel Aviv and is also the best bakery cafe in Manhattan. We like the one just off Union Square but there is one across the street from Lincoln Center and they operate a kiosk in Bryant Park. I could go on and on about their strudel and chocolate babka as well as their other sundry goodies but hurry over to 18 East 16th Street and see for yourself. Limited seating despite recent improvements but most customers get on line to take their coffee and pastry to go so usually no problem getting a table. Just off Union Square, you can take a break from the green market or shopping on 5th Ave.
High-quality, fresh Jewish bakery staples with an Israeli twist - baked onsite! Generally friendly staff. Don’t sleep on their challah, matza ball soup (available only on Passover), and Hanukah donuts!
Absolutely amazing pastries, bread, crossiants, it's a little busy here but you can't resists. The chocolate rugulach are heaven on earth haha, the chocolate babka, their challah and chiabata bread is amazing. I have to hold myself back from always going here because it can become an addiction. Everything is just so perfectly made. Wish there was more seating, it can be a little pricey when you want to get everything, but once in a while it won't break the bank. Everyone should just go here at least once.... or forever.
They honestly have the best plain croissant I’ve had in New York. Buttery, soft, fluffy, crunchy, perfect layers. It took my heart without expecting it. The chocolate rugelach also took my heart away, perfectly balanced, simply divine. I would recommend not miss it. They also offer great sandwiches (I had a lox toast, which was great)—really looking forward coming back and trying everything else they offer. Simply divine.
After reading a NY Times article and the bakery was recommended for Passover during my Sedar dinner, I knew I had to try it. The Matzah Brie is phenomenal! They had two flavors that day, artichoke and spinach and mushroom and herbs. I tried both, and they were both great! There were also a bunch of Passover cookies and even has of Haroset! If you want something delicious during Passover, this is a great and delightful bet!
Initially visited this bakery because my dad, who was visiting me from Michigan, saw it on a news segment and wanted to try the chocolate babka. I remember thinking, "great, another tourist trap to visit while he's here." However, I was greatly mistaken. The chocolate babka was amazing and I've returned to buy it for myself and for friends, birthday parties, and other occasions. I now visit quite often when in the area and have tried other specialties, such as the coffee cake babka and the Jerusalem bagel. The Jerusalem bagel is worth noting--very delicious for a bagel and quite sizable too. Breads Bakery offers a variety of other baked goods and has another counter with coffee and other things in the back. Very nice place, always great service at the register. They've become one of my go-tos whenever I'm in the Union Square Park area.
Hard to say if I love their almond croissant (awarded as the best almond croissant in NYC) more or the one I had in BUKA in Copenhagen 2 years ago…both sensational in their own way! Also enjoyed the coconut chocolate chip cake (moist and light!) and chocolate rugelach! Just don’t order an English breakfast tea…you’ll probably get an earl grey.
I'm a fan. Such a big fan. Everything from breads to pastries to coffee is perfect. Chef's kiss. The flakiest croissants and rugelach - your tongue will feel every layer. The savory puffs are as flaky and the best part is they're generously stuffed. You'll taste the filling in every single bite. Not greasy ever. They're known for breads and they do such justice! And the snappiest palmiers. So delicious. Haven't yet tried the pizza but saw numerous customers enjoy their pies heartily. So definitely coming back!
From the moment you step in, the scent of baked goods makes you happy. The clean and well lit place surrounded by baked goods of extraordinary quality makes this place fantastic. Great to take to go or hang out and work. You might even get surprised by free samples! The chocolate babka is what they are famous for and is amazing
Hands down to the best BABKA i’ve ever had😍!!! Can’t get enough of it! Breads Bakery is a very good place with a lot of sweet and savory options. They have free samples usually every day for the most part of the day! The back has salads options as well. Can’t wait to go back and have more!!!!
My frequent stop when around the area for both sweet and savory snacks. Today we tried the sandwiches too which were tasty. Especially like the eggplant and tomato one which has hummus in the sandwich. We also had the Jerusalem baguette that we'll definitely get again. It has a great bite and tons of sesame. The swiss muesli bun is also great which I had for breakfast the next day. The employees there are always super friendly and helpful. My husband can't have refined sugar and the employees could look up ingredients in the computer to clarify which options are safe for him to eat.
The croissants and the Jerusalem loaf were fresh and yummy! I love this bakery, have been shopping here for years.
Not only can you get some of the best baked goods in the Tri State area, the staff is Fantastic! Knowledgeable! Friendly! Worth getting there before they opened and waiting...
I am not exactly sure what they put in the Mediterranean quiche but it was so delicious. One of the best things that I ate on my most recent NYC trip.
Incredible staff that helped me pick the best pastry gift for family. Everything is delicious, highly recommend. BH
Many types of freshly baked sourdough breads, sandwiches and pastries at this kosher bakery just west of Union Square on 16th street in NY. The mini chocolate rugelach was reasonably priced and delicious without too much sugar. Some of the doughnuts and pastries use local fruit preserves from Beth's Farm Kitchen from NY Hudson Valley local farms. Beth's Farm Kitchen sells jams/preserves/spreads right next door at the union square greenmarket many days of the week (wed, fri, sat).
My favorite Jewish bakery in NYC! The owners and staff are the greatest humans and the food is delicious. The chocolate babka and almond croissant are particularly excellent!
I love everything from this place and have gifted the babka to many friends who all loved it too. Even when I moved away from the city I ordered it to be shipped to me. I will say that the recipe seems to have changed a bit. It feels smaller and dryer than it once was. Still pretty good though. Their spinach feta pastry and Jerusalem baguettes are also especially fantastic.
Great variety of pastries, baking goods, cakes, and breads. So glad to try their signature CHOCOLATE BABKA! (Jewish sweet, buttery, breast cake) I brought it to go and heated it up in a air fryer. After reheating, the babka was crispy outside and a bit gooey inside - love that chocolate filling so much! Surprisingly, the CHEESE STRAW was also very flavorful and tasty - crispy pastry with cheese filling. ALMOND CROISSANT was not as flaky as I expected but the almond filling was not over sweetened.
If it was not for my girlish figure I would live at this bakery. I love their croissants especially the almond filled. The croissants have just the right amount of crispness and always are very fresh. You can also order some of the sandwiches which are also nicely prepared. Staff are always helpful and nice.
Best croissant in New York. Rivals the ones in France. No idea what an “authentic” babka should taste like but imo, their chocolate babka is also exceptional.
I was recommended to buy cinnamon rolls at this place by a friend. And they did not disappoint!! They taste like cinnamon and fine sugar covering a soft cloud like pastry dough. Absolutely my favorite cinnamon roll ever! I also got chocolate babka which was really good, chocolate croissants and chocolate brownie. All were really good, but again those cinnamon rolls were just unbelievable! You need to get those!
Have picked up pastries from here numerous times and am always impressed with their offerings. The babka is exceptional, with beautifully layered dough and a deep, rich chocolate flavor. The Parmesan cookies are another standout - perfectly crunchy with a strong cheesy taste. Their baked goods never disappoint!
if you’re a New Yorker and haven’t had a Breads Bakery babka, you’re probably not an actual New Yorker! but you reply: “madman reviewer, i have no friends or family and can’t order one whole babka loaf for myself” and i say: a babka is good for 4-5 days after being baked. if you can’t finish one in a few days then you might NOT be a human! Breads is famously known for its babkas but i’d say that that the various baked loaves are also fantastic like the French Sourdough. Jerusalem bagels are also available here which i don’t see often. the bakery space is very clean and well-maintained. most of the freshly baked items are up front. in the back is the packaged salads and sandwiches as well as coffee area. the drip coffee is good especially paired with something sweet. don’t know if all the staff are involved baking operation but they are friendly and pretty knowledgeable. Breads Bakery is a carbs heaven for all.
Their almond croissant is one of the most delightful things I’ve ever eaten. The pain au chocolate was very good, but just trust me. Get the almond croissant. Fab! James is adorable. Very friendly and helpful. My son and husband both had the cinnamon roll and a cookie and enjoyed them very much. I also got the tart with fresh berries which I haven’t eaten yet but I’m sure it will be amazing. (Ate it just now. Amazing!) I went back in and got the apple babka and another cinnamon roll and almond croissant to go because YUM!!! Thank you, James!! I will go home to Acworth, Ga and dream about almond croissants from Breads Bakery!
AMAZING! My group and I wanted a quiet bite while we were strolling around the area. So glad we decided to stop into Breads Bakery. Everything we had was AMAZING. the cookies, croissants, and coffee were 10/10. Such a cute little spot. Will def be going back whenever I’m in the area.
Wonder bread This wonderful bready spread isn’t your average plain white wonder bread though. @breadsbakery makes insanely delicious pastries and bread, sweet or savory. For a @grabbdapp collab, they gave me a tour through the bakery, some treats to try in store, and an entire tote bag of goodies to go! It was a really cool experience! Be sure to grab them on the Grabbd app! Pictured: Delicious chocolate babka (Jewish bready, twisted, cake), sweet life gives you lemons cake, sugary cinnamon roll, perfect cheese danish, yummy chocolate rugelach (Jewish flakey, rolled pastry), the cute tote bag, palmier (I called them ‘elephant ears’ growing up), sourdough loaf. Everything was so good! Cheesy puns make me gooey on the inside @breadsbakery makes insanely delicious pastries and bread, sweet or savory. For a @grabbdapp collab, they gave me a tour through the bakery, some treats to try in store like fresh iced coffee and the egg and cheese sandwich on a delicious roll, and an entire tote bag of goodies to go (see previous post)! It was a really cool experience!
Came here early morning, not that many people inside. Didn't have to wait too long for my food, i got a scrambled egg w/ Cheese on a poppy seed bun & a hot chocolate. I paid around 13$ and tipped 3$ ALWAYS TIP YOUR SERVERS. The only gripe i have with this place is that the hot chocolate wasn't hot even after i just got it. When you add the milk to it, it cools down the rest of the drink so its not as hot, it was basically a warm chocolate. Kind of disapointed but the sandwich made up for it.
Nice tasty bakery Very busy during weekends Breads Bakery has different branches. Heard so much about this bakery and we started going to this place. Not sure about the other branches but this one has very fresh stock always. They have different challahs, varieties of Babkas, handful options of breads (loafs and small bites), Loaf cakes (carrot cake, lemon cake, banana chocolate cake), croissants, brownies, cookies, Rugelach, Rolls, sandwiches, breadsticks, baguettes and many, many more They have some beverages available Clean and neat store. Staff are friendly and helpful. They maintain good hygiene levels. Our personal favorites are: chocolate Babka, plain and chocolate croissants, chocolate Rugelach, challah knot, garlic Parmesan bread sticks. Yet to try few more items. They have some lunch options too. Highly recommended place.
I came here on weekday morning , and there’s no waiting line. The chocolate babka is really good - very rich doughs and a lot of chocolate melted in between the doughs. The chocolate rugelach is also nice, and the texture feels like a combination of croissant and babka. The staff is friendly.
If you’re looking for a sign to treat yourself, this is it. Breads Bakery continues to prove why they are a New York institution—not just for the bread, but for the soul-warming flavors they pack into every single menu item. Here is the breakdown of my latest (and arguably greatest) haul: The Tunisian Sandwich The Flavor Bomb This isn't just a sandwich; it’s an architectural masterpiece. The focaccia is the perfect pillowy vessel for the Chunk Italian Tuna, which is incredibly fresh and high-quality. But the real magic is the interplay of textures—the creaminess of the hard-boiled eggs, the bite of the potatoes, and the salty punch of kalamata olives. The spicy harissa provides a slow, sophisticated heat that ties everything together. It’s bold, bright, and utterly addictive. Butternut Squash Soup Hug in a Bowl Pure, velvety comfort. This soup is the gold standard for autumn/winter eats. It’s rich and deeply savory without being overly heavy, highlighting the natural sweetness of the squash. It’s exactly what you want to be eating on a brisk afternoon, especially if you have a side of their famous baguette to dip into it. Banana Chocolate Chip Cake The Showstopper Do not call this "banana bread"—it’s a Banana Chocolate Chip Cake, and it demands respect. The crumb is impossibly moist and dense with real banana flavor, and they don't skimp on the chocolate chips. Every bite gives you that perfect melt-in-your-mouth chocolate-to-cake ratio. It’s decadent enough for dessert but dangerously easy to justify for breakfast. > Pro Tip: If you're ordering the Tunisian, ask for an extra napkin—it’s packed to the brim, and you won’t want to miss a single drop of that harissa oil. The Secret Ingredient: The Staff What truly elevates the experience is the team behind the counter. Even when the line is out the door, the staff moves with a practiced grace and a genuine smile. They are incredibly knowledgeable—if you’re undecided, just ask for a recommendation, and they’ll point you toward your new favorite thing. Their energy makes the bakery feel less like a shop and more like a neighborhood kitchen.
Update: 09-30-20: refreshing this review because it has 30,000 views...I guess the people liked this review. Stopped by for some coffee and also ordered a cinnamon bun. The bread just tastes so much better here than everywhere else. Also they use cinnamon sugar on the bun instead of frosting or glaze. It tastes alot better with the bread that they make. Good customer service nice sitting area. They also have sandwiches but I didn't get to try because i came here in the morning. Only downside was that the weather was cloudy and it looks like rain but I was here early so sun still might come out. I would recommend.
I just ordered there for the first time. The food is amazing, the value is great (I am from Miami this is much less expensive than Pura Vida) and the people (staff and other clients) were so nice. I am ordering again tomorrow.
Nothing is bad here! The most important thing, as names, breads are fantastic here, and my fav thing here is oatmeal bread. They are getting new pastries every once in a while. The new strawberry tartlet was wonderful. The place is spacious, a lot of seating in the back for lunch, right in front of the kitchen where they make breads. Love here!
Seriously best, chocolate rugelach chef’s kiss. Chocolate babka love, chocolate chip banana bread, my favorite. My friends still talks about their coffee cake. I hope one day they’d make monkey bread :) love this store
I absolutely love this bakery!! The pastries are delicious and whenever the owner is in he takes time to stop to talk to us and ask us about our experience. Gentlest man, best pastries. Try it for yourself!!
The chocolate Babka is incredible. Came here just for this and I’m so glad I did. Delicious and chocolatey, yet light because of the bread like dough. Even as I was walking someone saw me with a breads bakery bag and said “did you get the chocolate babka?” So clearly if you know you know. Now you know too - go try it!!
I’ve loved Breads for YEARS since I was a student. It’s such a great treat to splurge on yourself. Their pastries are so light and high quality and so worth it. The babka is my favorite. But for to-go snacks, the cinnamon roll and almond croissants are perfect. They’re not stodgy at all.
The petite croissant is nice. Not crunchy but softy. You can sit there for a while to have a good time. I don’t like the eyesight that the staffs look at me. Like I did some mistakes there.
Babka only comes in whole pre-packaged loaves, so take it home and warm it up! So rich and chocolatey and gooey. It keeps well and stays moist. I didn't find the rugelegh that unique tasting, just a chocolatey croissant. It's still tasty, but the babka was definitely the highlight for me!
I ordered online 3 days ago on January 13th. Today I received my bread! Unbelievable service! The presentation is lovely! I tried the Chocolate Babka first and am in love. Such rich chocolate and flaky bread. The Life gives you Lemons cake is moist with a delicate lemon flavor topped with just the right amount of crumble. And the carrot cake is a perfect combination of carrots, raisins, nuts, and spices. I'm sorry for the reason we learned of this NY company, but so thrilled we got to experience their amazing product! G_d's richest blessings on you for much continued success!
Breads Bakery at Union Square is a masterclass in restraint, precision, and flavor. Every loaf and pastry reflects deep respect for craft, but the chocolate babka stands apart—rich, perfectly balanced, and deservedly iconic. The service thoughtful, and the quality unwavering. In a city overflowing with bakeries, Breads Bakery remains timeless, confident, and quietly exceptional.
After work and before Shabbat I stopped at their union square bought a challah and few pastries. LOVE IT. My wife and kids asked me if I can stop by their bakery after work, and yes I will. The food was absolutely delicious, clean location and friendly employees. Thank you
I have been going to Bread‘s bakery ever since the first one opened. This is by far the best bakery I’ve ever been to in New York City or anywhere. The quality of the food cannot be matched. Everything is made with so much love. If you haven’t been there go, try anything, you will thank me.
It’s a bakery in the Chelsea district, and it’s really excellent, well-reviewed, and we enjoyed breakfast there three times. We tried a variety of specialties, like different kinds of croissants, pain au chocolat, and even yogurt. Everything was delicious, and the price is typical for New York, quite reasonable. My experience was definitely very positive, especially because of the great customer service. When I ordered a croissant and received the wrong one, they offered it to me for free and still gave me the correct croissant, which was a wonderful touch. It’s a welcoming, cozy place that feels like home, and it’s highly recommended. It’s a lovely bakery in a beautiful New York neighborhood, and the pricing is definitely average
Oh, where do I even begin with Breads Bakery in Union Square? This gem of a spot turned my casual afternoon stop into an unforgettable treat! As a bakery aficionado, I was immediately drawn to their Jerusalem Bagel Stick – a sesame seed-crusted breadstick generously filled with aromatic za'atar and creamy feta. The first bite was an absolute delight: the crunchy exterior gave way to a soft, savory interior bursting with herbal zest and tangy cheese. It's not just bread; it's a flavor adventure that transports you straight to the streets of Jerusalem! I even provided some videos showing what this incredible bread looks like – you have to see it to believe it, and I highly encourage everyone to give it a try. To elevate the experience, I paired it with their Super Fruit Tea – a vibrant, antioxidant-packed brew with notes of berries and citrus that originally comes unsweetened. We added a small amount of sugar to enhance its natural flavors, and the subtle sweetness perfectly complemented the bagel stick's bold spices, creating a harmonious balance on my palate that left me craving more. And the atmosphere? Warm and cozy, with the scent of fresh-baked goods wafting through the air and just the right amount of bustle to make you feel alive yet relaxed. It's the kind of place that begs you to linger, sip, and savor. What truly set this visit apart was the exceptional service from Louis at the counter. His politeness, professionalism, and genuine kindness made me feel like a valued guest from the moment I walked in. He patiently guided me through the menu and offered spot-on recommendations tailored to my tastes. If you're visiting, do yourself a favor and chat with Louis – his personalized suggestions will make your experience even better! In a city full of bakeries, Breads Bakery stands out as a must-visit. Based on this delightful outing, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking quality baked goods, great vibes, and top-notch service. I'll be back soon – five stars all the way! 🌟🍞
I have tried chocolate babka from Kossars and Russ & Daughters, but the best I've had so far is from Bread's Bakery! I love my chocolate babka to be dense and loaded with chocolate. Bread's Bakery delivers on both! Definitely the best!! Plus, the place is immaculate and everything is organized. I can't wait to go back and try some of their other delicious delights!
Signs announcing that this bakery has been awarded best baguette and best croissant are all over the walls of this bakery with good reason. Upon entering, you’re confronted with a really mesmerizing display of breads and pastries, and the bakers in-store are happy to discuss their products and help you make a selection. Because I am limited to the confines of my human organs, I could not eat everything and picked an almond croissant and a chocolate rugelach. The almond filling was delicious and smooth, and nothing was too sweet: completely perfect. I’m a little traditional with rugelach, and I think this felt a little more like a mini chocolate croissant to me, but it was delicious nonetheless! Will be returning.
Popular bakery on the ground floor of an apartment complex. Fragrant even before you step in, it’s bustling with visitors in line to check out. Frequently restocked shelves of different pastries. The palmiers here were a lovely treat to get, petite but full of buttery sweet flavor. Staff are prompt, courteous and knowledgeable. It’s fast paced inside but wonderful to smell everything.
Went to the Union Square location- lives up to its reputation as a go-to spot for artisan breads and delectable sandwiches. We started with their sourdough bread to go, which is a standout. The slow-fermented organic sourdough had a perfect balance of tangy flavor and a chewy, airy crumb, encased in a golden crust. If you’re a sourdough enthusiast, this is a must-try. The olive and cheese breadsticks were another highlight. And we also got croissant and palmiers were superhit. They were a fantastic snack on their own. We sat and I ordered the egg salad sandwich. My wife ordered the roasted bell peppers sandwich with cream cheese on sourdough bread was the star of the meal. The roasted bell peppers were sweet and smoky, paired beautifully with the rich, tangy cream cheese. The sourdough bread provided a sturdy yet soft base that soaked up the flavors without falling apart. The combination was simple yet executed with such precision that every bite was a delight. The staff was friendly and efficient, making the experience even more enjoyable. Prices are on the higher side, as expected for an artisan bakery in NYC, but the quality justifies the cost.
Savory and sweet options plus plenty of hot and cold drinks. Get the chocolate babka (you might be deterred because it is only sold as a loaf, but sooo good!).
12.31.17 - Hung out for a few hours eating fresh made babka and an Americano. The babka was gooey and and crunchy at the same time (when warm); the Americano was smooth and just right. The staff was super nice and attentive and they were offering samples at the front to walk-ins and offering it to customers already seated. I increased the rating from 3 stars to 4 stars because it's consistently good food and coffee after returning a few more times. The seating area is kept clean and organized so that helps with a table is cleared and made ready for more customers. Why no 5-stars? My opinion isn't that valuable, but I like to reserve for myself when a place is just good and special (the babka is actually almost that special). Could there be a pricing option for 3 babkas? ***Original Review*** Awesome bread, good coffee, great location. Overall, not bad!
Finally got to try the iconic popular babka with a guest visiting NY! Perfect amount of sweetness with just the right amount of nutella& dark chocolate chips. Babka was quite big but the three of us managed to finish it in no time. Would come back to try the other pastries, especially the croissant & rugelach. Plus points for being one of the only cafes that stay open after 6pm on Sunday in the USQ area. Outdoor seating only.
Great bakery and cafe near Union Square. Delicious looking pastries, bread, egg sandwiches and other assorted breakfast and lunch snacks. There is limited outdoor seating (first come first serve), with about 5 tables. I docked them a star because everything is overpriced. Even the most petite sandwich is over $6.
Lovely bakery, if rather pricey. Unfortunately tipping is out of control here: line up to buy your bread - they put it in a bag and you pay via a screen that requests a tip at 18/20/25% ?! I mean really - for just putting bread in a bag at the counter? Breads - please pay your staff properly, and don't ask for tips for just buying bread-to-go. I hate the guilt trip of declining tipping (which the staff see). It simply makes me want to go elsewhere. Tipping has gotten crazy in this city.
I try to stop by Breads every time I'm in the Union Square area. If you love being greeted by a whiff of delicious, buttery, freshly baked pastries, this spot is for you. I haven't had a bad thing from here and still have so many things to try. The babka is always a safe option but I usually go for the Rugelach if I'm by myself and want a smaller bite of something. There's also a seating area in the back that's great if you want a quick place to rest your legs from walking. Love this spot!
Home to the city’s most celebrated chocolate babka, baked with depth and intention. Each slice reveals ribbons of chocolate that melt into the dough’s tender crumb. Efficient service and a touch of Israeli flair make it one of the most consistent bakeries in the city.
They were out of the cauliflower steak sandwich when I arrived so I ordered the Brie and Olive sandwich which was yummy! Amazing bread (as promised). They had a bathroom available for customers which was clean and had soap and TP and everything. I also got a pain au chocolate which looks good. I’ll update this if it isn’t.. 🥐🥐🥐
So delicious! All the staff is very friendly and helpful with answering any questions. The almond croissants are a must try besides the chocolate babka. The lattes are also the best around the area even though it’s pricy. Everything in here is pricy but the quality is there. In a good location as well to stop by for dessert, to get your bread for the week or to have a full meal to treat yourself. Definitely will go back but not too often other wise I’ll go broke! Definitely recommend to try this place, I only have 4 stars because of pricing but I understand for a lot of business to survive at this time, the pricing is what it is. Especially if you want high quality.
Wonderful location with yummy options! Unfortunately, our otherwise delicious experience was deflated by 3 employees who were running the front area. We had a few questions about different items and their interactions were indifferent and condescending. At check out, one employee told my friend who was packing up her own items to hurry up and clear the area. We left the store with our goodies but feeling just disgusted. To any supervisor who reads this - it was December 23 between 4:30 and 4:45. These employees may have been overwhelmed by a busy holiday shopping day but they need retraining.
A place with an Israeli feel to it - it had an Israeli salad, hummus and other pastries common to Israeli bakeries. Got to say that the prices are overwhelming and the place feels really pompous. However, eventually the coffee and the ice coffee we had were good, and the pastries were nice as well. The service was polite and considerable, too. There was a small mistake with my order which was corrected with no hesitation.
I am a regular for chocolate babkas, they are quite tasteful (I wish they were a bit bigger for the price). Perhaps as a complaint and understanding errors may happen, it would be amazing to not reuse the basting brushes for the syrup. I was unfortunate enough to taste that red onion flavor you have available, it is hideous. I am not chef but leave onions away from chocolate please!
Very tempting butter aroma, the croissant was really good, with almond filling inside and a cookie-like crispy outside. Maybe the croissant was so good that the cinnamon roll looked ordinary. The store also sells sandwiches, lunch salads and soups, with a lot of choices. It is a bakery that has won many awards, I will come back to buy croissants and try other foods.
Cute little coffee shop and bakery. I had the latte, and it was very good. Also got the feta and spinach quiche, and that again was very good. Although it was extremely tiny in size. You also tried the strawberry tart, which again was very good, but again was very small in size. The interiors are very compact and has an industrial feel. Might not be the best place for you, if you’re looking for a relaxed and brunchy vibe. All the food was great, but my main complain was around how expensive it was given the portion size.
Absolutely love love LOVE Breads. We recently revisited the Union Square location to pickup one of their incredible hot chocolates. Normally Breads Bakery is super consistent and high quality, but I believe they had ran out of their regular batch of hot chocolate when we visited. Normally rich, slightly thick, piping hot, with a great balance of sweetness and flavour, and a melty homemade marshmallow. This time they made our hot chocolate to order, instead of pouring from their main batch (maybe it was low or empty?). Sadly, it was milky, sickly sweet, and luke warm. A real shame when we know how amazing their hot chocolate normally is! I'll always recommend Breads Bakery - just try and make sure you get their real hot chocolate if you stop by for this seasonal staple!
Thank you! Truly. Thanks for not making me late for work this morning. I saved $12 and got a healthy breakfast from my work fridge instead. Win-win. I usually stop by 2–6 times a week for the carb-loaded goodness. Lately, though, I’ve discovered a new perk here: the staff’s talent for such engaging conversations with each other that customers at the register become invisible. Watching 4–5 staff members ignore you on your way to work is… impressive. I leave with money still in my pocket and arrive at work on time. I’m starting to think this might be the best deal in town.
Following the list of sweets to try in NYC, my wife took us to Breads Bakery to have a babka. I must admit I had never had one before and I didn’t know what it was. In theory there are 2 flavors but the cinnamon one is seasonal so the only option we had was chocolate. The babka are prebaked and prepacked so I don’t consider them as fresh products. And you can’t buy a fresh one. We had ours the following day and I found it rather dry. Its taste was kind of neutral and, even if it was not bad, I can’t say I look forward to eating another one. Plus I think that $17 for something that neutral and prepared God knows how much time in advance is way too expensive. Stale tasteless croissant and Jerusalem loaf was hard. Paid full price and bought early enough in the day. Never again, I hate wasting money. How are these people still in business? Are customers just too lazy to shop elsewhere or ignorant there's better choices?
Today has been my worst experience in breads bakery ever. We had to throw all our hot chocolates and coffee because they were all so gross. There was actually a line of people trying to return their coffee, now I know why 🤨 My 13$ egg sandwich had no egg - the whole ordeal was just infuriating. All in all that’s close to 35$ (yes, that’s what one sandwich and 3 hot drinks cost there these days) that have gone to the trash. I've been coming here for more than 10 years now. Their quality has been steadily declining over the years but today has been a new shocking low. A business that does not respect their customers does not deserve to get business. There plenty of other places these days to get fresh challah and pastries.
Absolutely disgusting. I ordered a piece of bread and it arrived with rat feces inside of it. There is an infestation in this establishment, and the management didn't seem too concerned about eradicating the rats. What a shame, as this place has quite a potential, only due to thier location.
Sad to say I am very disappointed with the rugelach and babka I purchased. I’ve been eating fabulous rugelach for over 40 years from great Jewish bakeries in Miami, Hollywood, and New York - and these were not it. They were on the greasy side, not at all crumbly, and more reminiscent of a mini-croissant. Also bought the Parmesan Cookies for my son and they were heavy - I guess I’d say greasy - as well. I came here based on the recommendation of a friend, spent nearly $100 to bring treats to a family gathering, and expected better.
I’m reviewing the service, as I never had the opportunity to try the products. On the second day of the snowstorm, I walked there because the posted hours indicated the store was open until 8 PM. When I arrived shortly after 5 PM, there was a sign stating it had closed early. Closing early due to weather is completely reasonable. That was not the issue. The issue was how it was handled. There was still an employee inside. I had just walked through a snowstorm, my shoes and socks soaked, specifically to support this business given the challenges it has faced over the past several months. I simply wanted to ask whether any other locations in the city were still open so I could take a taxi there. Instead, I was met with a flat “We’re closed,” and a refusal to engage at all. It was also my last day in Manhattan, so there was no opportunity to return. A brief explanation or even basic courtesy would have changed the experience. Instead, the message was clear: the effort didn’t matter. I won’t be making the effort again next time I’m in town.
Total waste of money. Insane you buy an almond croissant and you get neither of the distinctive traits that makes a pastry an almond croissant: the studded almond crust on top, and the almond filling inside. My crust had literally two tiny flakes of an almond. That’s it. 2 shavings. And absolutely nothing inside. Even as a basic croissant this sucked, it was flat and had no lift or air inside. Staff were nice but they can’t save this total disappointment of a pastry. Edit: In response to the reply, there was nothing inside. Zoom in on the pics and judge for yourself.
