I truly do not understand how this place is not always packed. I had to write a review. This is my second time eating here and this place is a hidden gem. They have some great vegan options which I appreciate. The food is also made on the spot and if you need to make alterations it can be done. Keep in mind that you will be spending $20 and more on one meal. I think that it is totally worth it.Also ask how spicy a dish is because it can kind of catch you of guard😅😂.I would highly suggest grabbing lunch here before there is line down the block. Finally I would like to add that every time I have been here the customer service is 10/10.
We had an unforgettable experience with Chef Mom! She was quite generous! This was not just a regular cooking class, Chef Mom taught us how we can cook from the depths of our hearts without a recipe. Form the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed by Chef Mom and Z. They made sure we had a great time and learned so much. We love the way they included fun elements such as how we can open an avocado and how to use a knife correctly. After the cooking class, Chef Mom shared special Jamaican “jerk” spices and meat! Now, we are a big fan of jerk anything! Overall, we highly recommended adding this cooking class to your bucket list! Thank you for the great culinary experience. We appreciate it ! My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Chef Mom Cafe 424! The service was warm and friendly with a personal touch from Chef Mom and her daughter. The space is small but didn't feel at all cramped. We shared the Jerk chicken Po Boy and the shrimp fried rice. Both dishes were delicious, very flavorful and the ingredients were clearly very fresh. Chef Mom's will definitely become our neighborhood "go to" place for great food and friendly service!
Chef Mom(and her daughter) are some of the warmest people I've met in this industry. We love stopping by for some jerk chicken, curried goat or oxtail if we're hungry, or some quality coffee and a yummy sweet snack. In this part of Manhattan people don't often take time to get to greet or get to know their customers. I get it! We're all busy...but at Chef Mom's the bustling outside world stands still for a moment as one savors the lovingly served comfort food in a positive, hospitable atmosphere.
Only place to get Caribbean food in midtown Manhattan. The Rasta Pasta was amazing! I got chicken & oxtail & it was worth every penny! The cafe is cute & hostess is sweet. I will be returning !
I am so happy to see a Caribbean restaurant in the area! I went yesterday and ordered the shrimp po boy and my tastebuds went crazy from the amazing authentic Jamaican flavors. I went today and ordered the rasta pasta with shrimp and chicken and AGAIN, I was amazed! Cafe 424 is a must-go! Chef Mom and Zhana will not disappoint! Lastly the blueberry and hibiscus drink is to die for!
I've lived on W. 54th St for 21 years and was pleasantly surprised to see a small Jamaican niche cafe open last week. I dined on my favorite dish, oxtail, and it was AMAZING, tender & juicy, melt in your mouth, served with butter beans, carrots, coconut rice, cole slaw, and plantain. Committed to supporting small neighborhood businesses, I vowed to write a review, and come back for more. Today I stopped by for curry goat! SO DELICIOUS! They had already sold out of the Rum Raisin Bread Pudding which is also a favorite of mine. I'm stopping by tomorrow for some! Next on my entree list to try is the chicken stew! My prediction is it will be just as delectable. I encourage everyone to patronize this new establishment. It is a hidden gem located in the middle of the block of W 54th St between 9th and 10th. It is off of 9th Ave, which is where most of the foot traffic is, so unless you happen to be on the block you may not even know it exists, but it is well worth the trip. The food is fabulous, and the chef and the other women that work there are as nice as can be!
Truly, if you are looking for a GREAT atmosphere with the right VIBES and FOOD then you have found the right spot. If you are a true FOODIE of New York City you should be eating from this place. 5 stars hands down across the board.
Off the hook! Coming from Queens I thought the best Caribbean food I ever ate was from Southside Jamaica. I just found a gem in Manhattan. This place is phenomenal. Highly recommended.
Chef mom was closed today when we arrived to her restaurant. She went out her way to make something special for my family. Her hospitality was amazing and the atmosphere felt warm.
Establishment was very clean and I was greeted and taken care of once I entered and placed my order. The food was excellent and honestly stumbled upon this place while walking. I will be eating here more often. Thank you from a fellow Carribean.
The food is so delicious. Each component is flavorful. Chef Mom is beyond talented and you can taste the care she puts in the food.
The food is homemade and spectacular! The staff is friendly and attentive. I HIGHLY recommend this coffeehouse! Did I mention that it’s black woman owned and operating restaurant? 424 54th St
Our company catered and the food was amazing! Patties were fantastic - and HIGHLY recommend the Tres Leches cake!!!
Nothing But Love for Cafe 424 and Chef Mom. Always welcoming, always yummy, always makes me feel good.

Ordered an Oxtail and I don’t know what they gave me. It was dry and the rice isn’t rice. Where is the gravy?! This is definitely not the hood oxtail. The chef is most likely NOT Jamaican! Never again… I’m good!
I was there with my 21/2 year old grandson looking to buy some dinner. I thought it was closed but was waved by a young lady to come in. She informed me about the monthly social dancing event which she welcome me to attend. I had to point to my grandson and say how can I. I asked about the food and pointed me to order. After 1/2 I got my food and I sat to eat which minutes later I was told to have my grandson lower his voice because they were trying to hold a class. I asked to be allowed to swallow the rest of my food and that I was going to be on my way. I asked if the eating area was closed and if it was I should had been prewarned. I understand if I was the one making noise but it was my 21/2 grandson. I was unable to digest at the food properly due to the pressures placed on me. I was noxious and stomach ache. Despite the food was good but yet due to the poor customer handling of child demands I will never return to this place. People don’t know what the next person is going through and that one poor judgement can affect a person’s wellbeing. Had no complains from chef as she made a lovely vegan dish that was great too bad couldn’t enjoyed it. Cashier was appropiate interaction.
