Opinions de Cafe Katja New York
Came here for dinner before a late movie at the theater nearby. We planned poorly and didn’t make a reservation in advance, so the neighboring restaurant was unable to accommodate our group of 5. (It was a Friday night, after all…) Boy were we glad to have accidentally stumbled across Cafe Katja! Despite the fact that it was quite busy and our relatively large group size, they were able to seat us very quickly. The inside of the restaurant was simple and a bit rustic, with great mood lighting and a lively atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly. On to the most important part: THE FOOD! The food here was absolutely amazing! One of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. No joke. We started off with a pretzel and brussels sprouts, which were tasty, but the real stars were the main dishes. I personally ordered the jägerschnitzel with spätzle and mushroom sauce. While eating it, I was making sounds that made my boyfriend jealous. Others at the table ordered the braised short ribs and Austrian meatballs, which were equally delicious! The ruben might have been the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen. Everything was truly scrumptious. Chef’s kiss, no notes! Will definitely be returning to the LES soon if for no other reason than to come back to Cafe Katja. Kisses!
We celebrated my nieces birthday with a party of 12 at this legendary lower East Viennese Mecca, and the food lived up to its reputation. Several of us had the Wiener Schnitzel which was perfectly done with delicious potato and salad side. The vegetarians had eggplant parm schnitzel which they all raved about. The meatballs and sausage sampler were also big hits. I don’t remember which desserts were ordered after several Kostrizers but they were raved about as well. Also a fantastic selection of Austrian beers and wines. We sat inside because we were such a large group which was festive but the outside seating was possibly even nicer on a lovely late fall evening on Orchard street which is a pedestrian mall.
This restaurant proves that good food speaks for itself. My meal was perfect! I enjoyed the clean, contemporary setting. The staff offered charming service. We're planning to visit again soon.
Each plate that arrived at our table was better than the last. All staff members approached with genuine warmth. Their menu items are exceptionally prepared. Cafe Katja's geographic advantage is clear, yet its staff's attitude is remarkable. Our entire meal was tasty!! I'm looking forward to returning!
this place was everything we wanted and more when it comes to good food and atmosphere. definitely try to sit outside when the weather is nice. it’s the perfect spot for people watching and catching up with drinks and food. we tried the gulash soup (tasted great and very similar to consume), wiener schnitzel (gigantic and tasty), and the emmentaler sausage (delicious). will be coming back soon.
I feel very strongly about Cafe Katja. They have consistently served authentic home cooked Austrian meals that are fresh, affordable, nutritious, and satisfying since they opened, which is when my mother & I first received their service. Their atmosphere appears as a warm, rich, and soft red color that calms a person. Their type of lighting is associated with an intimate, romantic, and passionate candlelight. The atmosphere SOUND is one I have taken time to record several times for future audible memories because it is the familiar sound of a loaded tavern from the Middle Ages with people talking & laughing. If you close your eyes there you may hear their non-existent fireplace popping. The waiting staff are friends who restore my respect for their profession. The food demonstrates concern for your health by presenting many vegetable options while simultaneously pouring on what tastes like copious portions of butter, cream and other comforting flavors that operate like a lullaby to a newborn baby. I cannot describe the heavenly experience I get from the food, but my wife will tell you how my eyes close before I tell her to take a moment of silence after my first bite. On top of all that, look at the prices yourself. If you make your own analysis of the pricing, you’ll find it difficult to find a handful of places that meet this quality at this price point, especially when receiving their service ego of an average ordinary human-oriented place. I could go on and on about Café Katja, but I’ve already written enough. Go explore this restaurant on your own. You will be the better for it!
The people working here know how to treat guests right. Staff regularly cleared our table without interrupting our meal. The food was amazing and we loved everything about it. The taste the dishing up. The place combines coziness, tidiness, and service that stands out. My final say: Cafe Katja is remarkable.
The restaurant boasts a selection of Austrian and Bavarian beers, including Stiegl and Gösser, served in a warm, tavern-like setting adorned with brick walls and rustic decor . The ambiance is reminiscent of a European tavern, making it an ideal spot for casual dinners and enjoying steins of beer with friends
We’d been stalking their Instagram and showed up the moment they posted that white asparagus was finally in season. Just right by the time we wanted to celebrate the semester end. The asparagus was fresh and tender, and the hollandaise sauce was rich, silky, and delicious, absolutely obsessed. We also shared the sausage platter — a generous serving of Berne sausage, Krainer, Emmentaler sausage, and Frankfurter. Everything was flavorful and perfectly cooked. We couldn’t finish it all and happy we could have them again the next day lunch. The service was wonderful, too. One friendly staff member kept checking in on us even though she wasn’t our server, which made the experience feel even more personal. We love this place and will definitely come back! From the outside, it looks like another spot in a busy bar area, but inside it feels cozy, warm, with class.
This was a pleasant surprise at the end of a seven day visit to Manhattan. We'd had a lot of mixed results with restaurants on this trip, and when we saw that this was in place with a lot of other restaurants, we had our doubts. Turned out to be a great restaurant with tasty food. We're fond of German cuisine and have it often. Service was also great. I was a bit surprised that the server had never heard of Schnitzel ala Holstein, but theirs was good.
Loved cafe Katja! Been here a few times and the food was always good. This time we had the schnitzel and the jägerschnitzel and they were both delicious. Extra point for our server who was willing to accommodate the last minute change to our order. We were lucky to be seated next to their semi opened kitchen, and it was fun to see their very efficient kitchen operation (also super clean kitchen!). Around spring time they also have specials with white asparagus, we will have to return and try.
Great beer and sausage. This place is a staple, come hungry and thirsty. Sausage sampler, spatzel, cabbage, carrots, meatballs. Update. Arrived in Oct 2025 and they were out of pretzels. Came an hour before closing and felt rushed. Had meatballs and sausage sampler. Didn’t love the draft ipa but drank it as it was tolerable.
This place is in the heart of the LES. The food was delicious even after the next day when I brought home some leftovers. The service staff was friendly. The restaurant itself is nice too. The only thing that brought the review down is the cost. It could have been not as pricey. As good as it is, the price was high. Thank you for a lovely meal!
4. Came here for a quick drink and snack before dinner. The menu looks great and would have loved to stay and eat some more of the European classics. The atmosphere was nice- we sat outside, but it was a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty which was weird- perhaps it draws a later crowd. The beer list was good and the pretzel was great. It came with butter and what they said was cheese (didn’t taste like cheese- more like cheesy butter?) and Dijon! It’s in a great neighbourhood with lots of other bars and restaurants nearby- great for a quick drink. There are steps to get inside.
Great neighborhood restaurant serving up German and Austrian classics. Nice and cozy interior. Food is delicious and well-prepared. Service is friendly, though the beginning could have been a little more attentive and consistent. Nonetheless, had a great experience and would certainly come back for another drink and meal!
