Came here for dinner on a Wednesday and sat outside. The food was great. We got the pretzel and herring beet salad to start and the Emmentaler and schnitzel as entrees. Our server felt distracted even though we were one of 3-4 tables in the building so we had to wait for water and check etc
Where do I even begin? I received exceptional service tonight by a lovely woman named Anna. She greeted me with such kindness and was very attentive with my table the entire night. The food and drinks were also great. I will definitely be returning!
Cafe Katja is a charming little Austrian eatery located in the Lower East Side of New York City, and I recently had the pleasure of dining there. From the moment I stepped inside, I was impressed by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor is rustic and cozy, with wood paneling and antique accents throughout the space. One of the highlights of my dining experience at Cafe Katja was the exceptional service provided by the staff, particularly Erwin, Angel, and Fernando. These three individuals went above and beyond to ensure that my dining experience was enjoyable and memorable. Erwin, in particular, was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and was able to provide helpful recommendations. I decided to try the Wiener Schnitzel, which is one of the restaurant's signature dishes, and it did not disappoint. The schnitzel was crispy and perfectly cooked, and it was accompanied by a delicious potato salad. Angel was also a delight to interact with. He was attentive to my needs throughout the meal and was always happy to provide extra condiments or drink refills. And Fernando, that nights bartender, was a master of his craft. He created a delicious cocktail for me that perfectly complemented my meal. Overall, I would highly recommend Cafe Katja to anyone looking for a cozy and delicious dining experience in New York City. The exceptional service provided by Erwin, Angel, and Fernando only added to the overall enjoyment of my visit, and I look forward to returning to this lovely restaurant in the future.
It's such a cool little restaurant. The service was top-notch. The food was amazing, as were the choices of drinks. I highly recommend the soup!
What a great find. Place is always packed, but in a good way. The waiters are friendly attentive and fast. Unpretentious great food and service. The fried chicken thighs with mashed potatoes were out of this world. Beer is always fresh and the atmosphere is lively. Would absolutely recommend going during these cold winter nights.
Great experience for our Sunday lunch, Irving was a great host. Come and enjoy a beer and a bite anytime
One of the best spots in the lower east side. Some of the best German food and beer around.
Came here for dinner and sat at the bar. Staff was super friendly, food was a bit heavy (but still delicious) and the beer was fresh! Great vibes, warm and cozy. Good place for beer loving couples or friends; recommend you try some of the schnapps as well.
Stumbled upon this gem looking for a drink after the Van Gogh experience, but stayed for a lovely dinner. Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle and salad (huge portion!) followed by apple Strudel with Schlag was simply devine! The service was very attentive and the atmosphere cozy and gemütlich. Will definitely be back!
I Absoulety fell in love with this place! The owners are so kind and generous! The food was so damn good I had meatballs and pureed potatoes with roasted vegetables for dessert I had apple strudel perfect comes to mind! The atmosphere was romantic and soft and they had live music! I couldn't be happier with my last night in new york! Thank you for everything!
When I come here, I am treated like family. The service is incredible and the food is incredible. Long live this very special, authentic spot. Nothing like delicious Austrian food and dessert with a nice beer and schnapps to wash it down. Ambiance is on point and makes you feel like you are not in the US.
Nestled in the heart of the Lower East Side, here you will find Austrian American food , it's probably the " go to" for a many of the local residents. Good, warming, food at a reasonable price. Enthusiastically served by local people with no pretense. This is a refreshingly normal NY restaurant it just works so well and the food will never disappoint. The music always on point and when you look around the majority of those people live within a few blocks. A rare gem in NY nowadays
Fantastic cafe with a true old world vibe. The staff are warm and welcoming, the food has delicious Austrian authenticity, and they serve their beer in 1 liter steins! One warning: their extensive menu of schnapps is hard to resist. Cafe Katja has quickly become my new fave spot.
Love the atmosphere. The food is excellent, fresh, authentic, high quality. The staff is friendly and very attentive.
Tasty Austrian/German food, awesome and friendly staff, and atmosphere. Recommendations: - Austrian Meatballs $25~ - Reuben $25~ Reuben was well toasted, cheesey, and meaty, served with ranch. The meatballs were excellent for meatball/meatloaf lovers, root veggies were cooked tender and sweet. Looking forward to coming back and trying out the other dishes. We sat at the bar and chatted with some of the staff, and it was clear the staff were enjoying their work and creating a neighborhood spot.
Came here for some after work drinks and small bites. We were able to be seated quickly. Nice list of cocktails and they have an extensive beer list. As for small bites, highly recommend the pretzel. They're small so would recommend one per person. Huge fan of the mustard. The charcuterie boards are interesting as they only have one cheese and one meat but not a combination of both which was unfortunate since one of us couldn't have cheese and another couldn't have pork/meat. We ended up sticking with the meat platter and the patte was great. Would consider coming back for dinner.
The flavors here made me stop mid-bite in pure amazement. The restaurant welcomes warmly with simple dishes. I particularly enjoyed exploring their dessert menu. The workers provide superior customer assistance. The experience was thoroughly pleasing.
My hesitation to try this spot was clearly a mistake. You get a table without delay and staff is prompt! The service stood out and the environment was unique. Each item showed more complexity than what came before. If only my budget allowed more visits here.
Cafe Katja values customer satisfaction. Staff members maintain top-tier attention whenever I dine here. The reputation is well-deserved here. The food combines visual appeal with delicious taste. This restaurant has an ideal location and we'll return.
Anna is the best server ever!! She really took care of us. Very intelligent and attentive. She even sang happy birthday for my bro. Only problem was I couldn’t tip more than 25% she deserves wayyy more. One of the hardest workers I know and does it with a smile! Will be returning very soon. Thank you!!!
Excellent way to quench the urge for German or Austrian fare. Great range of culinary, beer and dessert offerings. Highly recommended. Adding Kaiserschmarrn to the dessert menu would be a nice touch. Easy to make and would quickly become popular with New Yorkers.
The quality here keeps me coming back more often than I should admit. This place exceeds the conventional rating system. The dishes please with flavor and generous servings. Their workers delivered attention that redefined my expectations. Tasty cooking and attentive service.
Very great food. Good if you’re into European cuisine. The service is sublime and very organized. You can come here down for a drink and have some banter or a full on dinner party and meal. The Austrian food is also authentic and the drinks too. I would recommend Steigl beer or Almdudler. Almdudler is a must have when you come here, especially when you’re have a schnitzel.
While in Manhattan, I had a taste for German food, and my friend who lived there recommended Cafe Katja. What an excellent experience. The atmosphere was really nice (although slightly loud on a crowded weekend evening, but to be expected). The beer selection (Hofbrau, Spaten, etc.) was right up my alley. And the food was excellent. I went with the Goulash with absolutely no regrets. Our entire party loved it. I promptly returned on my next visit to the area, and plan to return again. Recommend.
I've developed a real fondness for their cooking style. Each plate arrives with optimal freshness and flavor. The restaurant exceeds the power of my words. I anticipate returning here frequently. This place delivers excellence consistently.
We stopped in here at the beginning of our German food tour of NY on a Monday night. The staff was super friendly and let my girlfriend take a 30m work call before we even ordered anything. The vibe is incredible -- wood and brick with classic German music pulsing from the bar. We ordered a couple of beers (get the Spaten Oktoberfest if it's available!) and a pretzel to start. The obadza was fantastic with the pretzel, which was hot and a perfect starter. Then we moved onto the main course with an Emmentaler Sausage and Jägerschnitzel. A lot of the German spots I hit, the Jäger is actually just wienerschnitzel (Austrian-style) with mushroom sauce on top. But because the owner at Katja's is very authentically Austrian, the Jäger is a fantastic unbreaded schnitzel with real mushrooms piled on top. And the sausage comes with actual Knödeln, which are a fantastic pairing. The portions are HUGE, so don't shy away from the prices. Overall, we were very impressed with the staff who frequently checked up to make sure we had everything we needed, the atmosphere which brought us back to our visits to small European holes-in-the-wall, and the food which was as authentically Austrian as it gets. Fantastic place to come if you're looking for a German/Austrian getaway!
One of my favorite restaurants in the city, have come for many occasions, including using Wi-Fi and their lovely espresso. Recommend the sausage dishes, pretzel with spreads, fried potatoes, and spaetzel. Also I dropped some cash on the floor one night that I came for dinner, and they kept it aside for me! Great people.
We started our lunch with a delicious pretzel that was straight from oven. My husband's Weiner Schnitzel was as big as his large plate and he substituted spetzel for whatever was supposed to be his side. The spetzel was some of the best I tried. I forgot the name of my dish, but it was basically two frankfurters with cheese and wrapped in bacon. Yummy. The service was quite good. Great place to dine at if you're visiting the Tenement Museum, since it is very close.
I already know what I want to try next time I visit. You can taste the freshness in every dish. Staff served speedily, were competent, and got orders exactly right! Despite size constraints, their food impresses. This restaurant deserves maximum stars.
Nice place located in downtown with good food and very good service. Also very convenient bar with a lot of beer and wine. I think this is one of few places where you can have white asparagus while it's season is here. And Asparagus and wiener schnitzel makes a perfect pair. Wine and beer lis is good. Staff is very friendle and helpful. Nice to come here again.
I do not normally do reviews however, i stumbled into Cafe Katja and there was a wine tasting menu. I chose a wine by FUCHS. I was not really paying attention to the menu, but moments after ordering, the wine glass was brought by a soft spoke gentlemen who introduced himself as Heinrich Fuchs. I did not put the details together however , after a brief intro he proceeded to tell me about his vineyards in Austria 🇦🇹 that him and his family have tended too for generations. Being served your wine 🍷 by the guy who cares for and owns the vineyards is awesome. After that happened i had to order food and enjoy the ambiance. Mr Fuchs recommended the schnitzel since my wine was a white wine. I got the schnitzel with spatzle (Austrian noodles) since i really didn’t want potatoes. This place is a gem , everyone was welcoming service was great and the hot tattooed german girl Miri was unfortunately married. But i’ll be back for sure.
Cozy LES gem—Cafe Katja nails that warm, intimate Austrian neighborhood feel with low lighting, wood accents, and super welcoming energy. Perfect for a relaxed dinner or drinks. Food was hearty and satisfying: Emmentaler sausage juicy and flavorful, beef goulash rich with tender meat, and the Austrian meatballs were a standout—savory, well-seasoned. Sides like red cabbage and spaetzle hit the spot too. Service was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable—great beer/wine recs. Atmosphere is top-notch: charming, unpretentious, and buzzy without being loud—feels like a hidden favorite. Love this place!
I just love it here. Delicious and interesting comfort food, kind staff and a warm, casual ambiance. Everything is fresh and feels made with love. it is charming sitting outside in summer watching the world go by, and a delightful glowing shelter in winter. This is a favorite spot. It DOES get a bit too crowded and therefore loud sometimes, I prefer it at "off-peak" moments.
Came here for dinner before a late movie at the theater nearby. We planned poorly and didn’t make a reservation in advance, so the neighboring restaurant was unable to accommodate our group of 5. (It was a Friday night, after all…) Boy were we glad to have accidentally stumbled across Cafe Katja! Despite the fact that it was quite busy and our relatively large group size, they were able to seat us very quickly. The inside of the restaurant was simple and a bit rustic, with great mood lighting and a lively atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly. On to the most important part: THE FOOD! The food here was absolutely amazing! One of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. No joke. We started off with a pretzel and brussels sprouts, which were tasty, but the real stars were the main dishes. I personally ordered the jägerschnitzel with spätzle and mushroom sauce. While eating it, I was making sounds that made my boyfriend jealous. Others at the table ordered the braised short ribs and Austrian meatballs, which were equally delicious! The ruben might have been the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen. Everything was truly scrumptious. Chef’s kiss, no notes! Will definitely be returning to the LES soon if for no other reason than to come back to Cafe Katja. Kisses!
We celebrated my nieces birthday with a party of 12 at this legendary lower East Viennese Mecca, and the food lived up to its reputation. Several of us had the Wiener Schnitzel which was perfectly done with delicious potato and salad side. The vegetarians had eggplant parm schnitzel which they all raved about. The meatballs and sausage sampler were also big hits. I don’t remember which desserts were ordered after several Kostrizers but they were raved about as well. Also a fantastic selection of Austrian beers and wines. We sat inside because we were such a large group which was festive but the outside seating was possibly even nicer on a lovely late fall evening on Orchard street which is a pedestrian mall.
This restaurant proves that good food speaks for itself. My meal was perfect! I enjoyed the clean, contemporary setting. The staff offered charming service. We're planning to visit again soon.
Each plate that arrived at our table was better than the last. All staff members approached with genuine warmth. Their menu items are exceptionally prepared. Cafe Katja's geographic advantage is clear, yet its staff's attitude is remarkable. Our entire meal was tasty!! I'm looking forward to returning!
this place was everything we wanted and more when it comes to good food and atmosphere. definitely try to sit outside when the weather is nice. it’s the perfect spot for people watching and catching up with drinks and food. we tried the gulash soup (tasted great and very similar to consume), wiener schnitzel (gigantic and tasty), and the emmentaler sausage (delicious). will be coming back soon.
I feel very strongly about Cafe Katja. They have consistently served authentic home cooked Austrian meals that are fresh, affordable, nutritious, and satisfying since they opened, which is when my mother & I first received their service. Their atmosphere appears as a warm, rich, and soft red color that calms a person. Their type of lighting is associated with an intimate, romantic, and passionate candlelight. The atmosphere SOUND is one I have taken time to record several times for future audible memories because it is the familiar sound of a loaded tavern from the Middle Ages with people talking & laughing. If you close your eyes there you may hear their non-existent fireplace popping. The waiting staff are friends who restore my respect for their profession. The food demonstrates concern for your health by presenting many vegetable options while simultaneously pouring on what tastes like copious portions of butter, cream and other comforting flavors that operate like a lullaby to a newborn baby. I cannot describe the heavenly experience I get from the food, but my wife will tell you how my eyes close before I tell her to take a moment of silence after my first bite. On top of all that, look at the prices yourself. If you make your own analysis of the pricing, you’ll find it difficult to find a handful of places that meet this quality at this price point, especially when receiving their service ego of an average ordinary human-oriented place. I could go on and on about Café Katja, but I’ve already written enough. Go explore this restaurant on your own. You will be the better for it!
The people working here know how to treat guests right. Staff regularly cleared our table without interrupting our meal. The food was amazing and we loved everything about it. The taste the dishing up. The place combines coziness, tidiness, and service that stands out. My final say: Cafe Katja is remarkable.
The restaurant boasts a selection of Austrian and Bavarian beers, including Stiegl and Gösser, served in a warm, tavern-like setting adorned with brick walls and rustic decor . The ambiance is reminiscent of a European tavern, making it an ideal spot for casual dinners and enjoying steins of beer with friends
We’d been stalking their Instagram and showed up the moment they posted that white asparagus was finally in season. Just right by the time we wanted to celebrate the semester end. The asparagus was fresh and tender, and the hollandaise sauce was rich, silky, and delicious, absolutely obsessed. We also shared the sausage platter — a generous serving of Berne sausage, Krainer, Emmentaler sausage, and Frankfurter. Everything was flavorful and perfectly cooked. We couldn’t finish it all and happy we could have them again the next day lunch. The service was wonderful, too. One friendly staff member kept checking in on us even though she wasn’t our server, which made the experience feel even more personal. We love this place and will definitely come back! From the outside, it looks like another spot in a busy bar area, but inside it feels cozy, warm, with class.
This was a pleasant surprise at the end of a seven day visit to Manhattan. We'd had a lot of mixed results with restaurants on this trip, and when we saw that this was in place with a lot of other restaurants, we had our doubts. Turned out to be a great restaurant with tasty food. We're fond of German cuisine and have it often. Service was also great. I was a bit surprised that the server had never heard of Schnitzel ala Holstein, but theirs was good.
Loved cafe Katja! Been here a few times and the food was always good. This time we had the schnitzel and the jägerschnitzel and they were both delicious. Extra point for our server who was willing to accommodate the last minute change to our order. We were lucky to be seated next to their semi opened kitchen, and it was fun to see their very efficient kitchen operation (also super clean kitchen!). Around spring time they also have specials with white asparagus, we will have to return and try.
Great food and location! Their spätzel's tender and delicious with gravy. Good beer selection, but when it comes in a bottle, I would prefer to pour my own (waitress tried to pour it for me, I suppose to perpetuate the upscale feel, but ended up turning it into a foamy-then-flat disaster; I insisted on pouring for the second round). Also, be forewarned that this place gets packed and so there's a good chance you'll get a table that's not really large enough for a drink and a plate (plus, you'll have to keep an eye on your table, to keep items from being pulled off as people squeeze by). Layout-wise it's not a place I would consider disabled friendly. That said, the food is tasty and they do have rotating specials.
Austrian bietgarten atmosphere with great outdoor seating in the summer. Good selection of beers and traditional Austrian dishes (schnitzel, spatzen), and a few others that surprised (trout almondine). Appetizers were mostly forgettable. Service only OK
I had the schnitzel, the breadcrumb coating was beautifully crisp and and the pork tender. Huge portion! Loved the pickled onions on the salad. Drinks were Amazon. Most attentive servers ever and they were easy on the eyes, smart move have an all woman team, very efficient.
Great food, hearty portions, lacking in ambiance. It's great for good food, but it could be Chicago. My only drawback. No real NYC vibe here.
Cafe Katja is the place to go for Austrian food in the city. Ok, it may be one of not many, but even with the small sample size, it’s definitely the best. The ambiance is very cozy especially on a cold winter day with lots of wood, exactly what you’d expect from a Germanic type of eatery. The beer selection is great with several Austrian and German varieties including ones harder to find in the US like the Hofbrau Dunkel. The food is excellent and stays true to its Austrian inspiration. Expect many big meat plates. The schnitzel is not only huge, but perfectly prepared and delicious. The beef goulash was my favorite with a hearty sauce over spaetzle noodles and large chunks of beef. Don’t forget to add a strudel at the end to finish off the experience. Service is also top notch and very friendly and attentive. This should be your winter weather getaway.
Great beer and sausage. This place is a staple, come hungry and thirsty. Sausage sampler, spatzel, cabbage, carrots, meatballs. Update. Arrived in Oct 2025 and they were out of pretzels. Came an hour before closing and felt rushed. Had meatballs and sausage sampler. Didn’t love the draft ipa but drank it as it was tolerable.
This place is in the heart of the LES. The food was delicious even after the next day when I brought home some leftovers. The service staff was friendly. The restaurant itself is nice too. The only thing that brought the review down is the cost. It could have been not as pricey. As good as it is, the price was high. Thank you for a lovely meal!
4. Came here for a quick drink and snack before dinner. The menu looks great and would have loved to stay and eat some more of the European classics. The atmosphere was nice- we sat outside, but it was a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty which was weird- perhaps it draws a later crowd. The beer list was good and the pretzel was great. It came with butter and what they said was cheese (didn’t taste like cheese- more like cheesy butter?) and Dijon! It’s in a great neighbourhood with lots of other bars and restaurants nearby- great for a quick drink. There are steps to get inside.
Great neighborhood restaurant serving up German and Austrian classics. Nice and cozy interior. Food is delicious and well-prepared. Service is friendly, though the beginning could have been a little more attentive and consistent. Nonetheless, had a great experience and would certainly come back for another drink and meal!
Their Wiener Schnitzel is actually not a Wiener Schnitzel here because they use pork instead of veal. We ordered the chicken which was bland. The pretzel came with a cream-cheese imitation of obatzda, which tasted nothing like the original. The Spätzle were better but also nothing like the original. Why not call it modern American cuisine instead of Austrian?
Waiters don’t know what’s going on and what anyone ordered, took 20 minutes to get 4 drinks. At least the bathroom is clean
An Austrian-inspired food serving restaurant. Food is ok and as American, you gonna be pleasantly surprised by the dishes. As European, you won't be that amazed but it's still good. And yes, their Wiener Schnitzel is not made from veal. It's from pork. And yes, they should call it 'Schnitzel Wiener Art' and everyone will understand it.
To be honest, the food is just ok - nothing special (compared to authentic German & Austrian food) It is very pricey for what you get. Especially for a deep fried vs a pan fried Schnitzel of what you could expect if you are familiar with Schnitzel. They advertise a “Wiener” Schnitzel (which is supposed to be made with veal) but serve a pork Schnitzel. It is still tasty but a bit of a tourist trap. Hope that helps and “Guten Appetit”
Deep fried Wiener schnitzel? Enough said. Not veal but pork in Wiener schnitzel? And now you know this is a tourist trap. Has nothing to do with authentic or even authentic-influenced Austrian or German fare.
A very Austrian experience. Incredibly slow service, we waited over 30 min for the food. Everything was tasteless, but we couldn’t complain because no one really came to our table to ask how was everything. To top it off, they included a 20% tip in the bill (we were 4 adults with 2 kids).
the food was edible but me and my friend both found our meals to be extremely bland. very disappointing, especially for the price. the elderflower lemonade was great tho lol
If pouring Morton salt in your food is your thing, this place is for you. I can’t comment on the taste of the actual food because I’m too busy trying to wash the taste of sodium from my system.
