Opinions de Hav & Mar New York
A friend and I tried the new chef's table experience, and it was spectacular. A front seat view to the bustling kitchen, and personalized attention from the executive chef herself. Plus chef Samuelsson also made an appearance, though I imagine that's not the typical experience. But the treating menu was varied, creative, and delicious -- everything one would expect from Hav & Mar, which is overdue for a Michelin star.
This was the best meal I’ve had in nyc and I’ve been dining out 2x a week here for 5 years. Incredible setting, service and the food was warm, engaging, incredibly well integrated and interesting. 11/10 ⭐️ can’t wait to return. Ps. Thanks Christian for great service.
You tastebuds will praise you. Everything was very well balanced and VERY GOOD. Now, if you’re looking for knock you off your feet flavor, then this place isn’t it. And I mean flavors that are very spicy or very sour/sweet. The food was just so soothingly good.
Hav and Mar is a must do whenever in N.Y. This was my second time and it did not disappoint. Truly, this was one of the best meals of my life. We had the Dawa Dawa salmon and the Havatini. Dawa Dawa salmon had a mixture of amazing flavors the perfectly complemented each other. From the crispness of the salmon skin to the perfectly cooked salmon and the seared rice, this was perfect. Havatini pasta a flavor bomb. Pasta was perfectly cooked and the stew of the dish could be bottled and sold. Overall, the meal was stellar and the service was exemplary as well. The vibe was excellent and this is a great play to visit to celebrate a special occasion, or to go and hang after a day of work.
What a delightful experience! 10/10. The food was delicious (as a vegetarian I had plenty of options) and the service was unbeatable. I've lived in New York over a decade and this is now one of my favorite spots for all around good food, good service, and great atmosphere. I commented to my friend that this has to be one of the warmest, most welcoming restaurants I've been to in the city. Pair that with innovative and excellent food and I have found myself a winner. Thanks to the chefs, Darius our server, and everyone else who made our dinner fantastic!
Dropped in on a whim after looking for a place to eat that was close to the Arte Museum. Swedish-Ethiopian food sounded unique and intriguing enough and they absolutely delivered. The plating of each meal was beautiful and only topped by the sharp service and exquisite tastes! We were also amused by the witty cocktail menu -- the Almost Rich, Almost Famous was the right mezcal pairing! Everything we had was absolutely delicious but make sure you get the cornbread.
This is THE fav in my top 10. Celebrated my birthday here this year and it was a vibe. Though a snow storm was approaching the atmosphere led you down another path and made you forget about all that was going on outside those doors. Tried the ribeye this time around. Succulent and well seasoned.. the perfect temp that I requested. We got the bread basket this time and I vacuumed every crumb. The plantain chutney was the best condiment I’ve had in a while and I’d love to explore more combinations with it. Apple of my Thyme was the perfect end to the meal and the pavlova was bursting with citrus. I need to rotate here every month just to get a feel of the overall menu.
Came with my sister and mom for a Saturday evening dinner. The bread basket: delicious! The hummus, honey butter, and chutney were excellent spreads. We ordered for the table the salmon, sea bass, grilled octopus, sides of greens, BBQ mushrooms, and fries. Each dish was seasoned perfectly, flaky fish, flavors that had sneaky heat and spices. We also had cocktails and mocktails. We ended with the blood orange pavlova, a sweet treat. Wish I lived closer to eat here more often!
I’d been wanting to try Hav and Mar for a while, and it was fabulous! Everything we tasted was so flavorful, inventive, and well balanced. Don’t skip the bread basket, go with a group so you can try many dishes. The biryani with oxtail and lobster is a show stopper, and we truly enjoyed every dish we ordered. The atmosphere is lovely, and the service was wonderful too. Shout out to Kwame who patiently and expertly guided our group of six. You will not be disappointed.
Had an amazing dinner at Hav + Mar! The food was so good , literally everything we ordered was delicious except the crêpes, which were honestly the only miss of the night. The service was excellent from start to finish, super friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance is really cute too: warm lighting, great music, and a vibe that works perfectly for a date night or a dinner out with friends. Overall, definitely recommend and would happily go back!
There are few times in my life I have built up such anticipation for a restaurant and then have it exceed my expectations, Chef Fariyal and her team crushed it. I ate so much only because everything was so god damn delicious. There were no single note dishes, complexity and balance dominated each plate. Everything was phenomenal, heat on the pasta was perfect, couldn't put the fork down. The multitude of flavors on the Cod was killer. Swediopian sauce at the bottom had great depth of flavor. I would do unspeakable things to acquire the dredge recipe for this chicken. The mushrooms had me questioning what I'm doing with my life, my god. Your team did a wonderful job, keep it up lady, you're crushing it. Thank you for the fantastic experience! This is a sure bet if you're visiting town, or entertaining friends & family.
Hav & Mar instantly transports you somewhere else. Where exactly is hard to define. Its Ethiopian and Swedish fusion feels entirely its own, delivering a dining experience that balances adventure with comfort. The setting is striking yet inviting: a wide, open room with warm wood details and whimsical mermaid mosaics. It’s both unfamiliar and welcoming, and the hospitality mirrors the space. From the host to our server Jay, every interaction felt gracious and genuine. We dined during the final days of the summer menu, which showcased fruit-forward cocktails and seafood-focused dishes. The standout starter was the blue cornbread. Firm yet moist, deeply flavorful, and perfectly paired with sweet honey butter. The salmon entrée, plated with coconut creamed spinach and mussel escabache, was vibrant and balanced, each bite layered with flavor. But the dish we returned for was the Havatini: bucatini with crab, shrimp, and uni butter. Decadent, rich, and impossibly creamy, it’s a masterclass in indulgence. Salty, sweet, and luxurious in every forkful. Hav & Mar isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a reminder that food can be both grounding and transportive. Anchored in flavor, lifted by imagination, and made unforgettable by the people who bring it to life.
I had an amazing experience at Hav & Mar in Chelsea. The restaurant has a warm, elegant atmosphere and every detail feels intentional. The seafood was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. What impressed me most was the service, our server was attentive, kind, and knowledgeable, which made the evening even more enjoyable. It’s rare to find a place that combines outstanding food, a welcoming vibe, and top-notch service so seamlessly. Highly recommend Hav & Mar for anyone visiting New York or looking for a special dining experience in the city
Had such a lovely dinner at Hav & Mar. The grilled ribeye and lobster were perfectly seasoned and just delicious. We also got the Black Mermaid Tower, and while everything is fresh the fluke ceviche stood out, it was insanely good. The ambiance is gorgeous, and our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely great at what he does.
great seafood and very good restaurant week deal to showcase so many dishes. go with a group to try everything. highlights were the crisp, crab pasta, salmon and mushroom curry. all were very well presented and service was fantastic. not too busy but good vibe and energy. great escape from the new york heat. hidden gem.
All around loved the experience. AMBIANCE The restaurant is beautiful. Hav & Mar is a seafood focused restaurant and they infuse that into the decor. Even the soft curves that define the seating sections and the walls remind you of the flow of water or the smooth lines of a fish. ANYWAYS, very gorg and love the high ceilings and all the decor choices. The lighting is also on point. Restaurant is very spacious. FOOD Delicious. Loved everything that came out. The cornbread is a must get. Also the crudo trio. AND THE OYSTERS - loved the mignonette. The main dish that won me was the pasta dish with the crab. The dessert was also very delicious SERVICE ...was amazing and at a very high standard. They were also helpful in navigating the menu. Overall, an amazing experience. Really delicious food and glad that I got to try a restaurant by the famed Marcus Samuelson!
The food was delicious and we were able to experience a new flavor profile at this west side Manhattan Marcus Samuelson restaurant. The service was friendly, fun and very knowledgeable. Jay and Alexa made our dinner special. We tried the fluke ceviche and swediopien salmon shared plates to start. We then shared a whole fish branzino that came with four variations of toppings. For dessert we had sorbet and aquavit liquor to finish our dinner. Highly recommend Hav & Mar which means Honeycomb and Sea.
I made our reservation and noted that it was for a birthday. Unfortunately, nothing was brought out to acknowledge the birthday, so we had to live vicariously through another table's sparkler celebration. Other than that the service was attentive and I loved everything we ate.
I recently visited Hav & Mar and had a mixed yet enjoyable experience. Food: The dishes were beautifully presented and quite tasty. I particularly enjoyed the seafood options, which were fresh and flavorful. However, some items felt a bit overpriced for the portion sizes. Service: The service was generally good, with friendly staff who were attentive to our needs. There was a slight wait for our food, but they kept us informed, which I appreciated. Atmosphere: The ambiance was charming, with a nice layout and decor that created a welcoming vibe. It’s a great spot for both casual dining and special occasions. Overall, I would recommend Hav & Mar for its great food and pleasant atmosphere. I look forward to trying it again!
I've been wanting to hit up this spot for awhile and was trying to not set unrealistic expectations when I got to try it... and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. I think it started with the fact that there wasn't a hostess or anyone to greet us when we arrived. We approached the bar to be told someone would be with us. And then we were seated at the bar, even though we were a party of 2 and it wasn't crowded. Maybe because it was later in the evening? Because of the shape of the bar, it actually makes it difficult for the bartender/ server to see you when your on one side, so it took a bit to even get drinks...I enjoyed the peach habenero aquavit (like a flavored gin) It was sweet and spicy. I was expecting food bursting with unfamiliar spices and textures, but it seemed just lack luster and mundane. We ordered the bread basket, tartar, uni paté, and the branzino with a side of zucchini blossoms. The cornbread was supposed to be a can't miss, but it was very dry and not noteworthy. The biscuit was the star of the basket. The uni path felt like it was missing something, either a crunch or some type of salty flavor. The bread is served on is similar to a soft sponge cake. I really liked the flavor of the branzino, but was put off by the presentation... a slight resemblance to the contents of a baby diaper. The accompanying pancakes and fermented sides were good, minus the green beans, they desperately needed seasoning/salt. When the meal came- because of sitting at the bar we kept hanging to spread our plates further and further out, I'm not sure what would have happened if it was crowded. One of the servers literally brought the tartar over and just set it down without an "excuse me" or taking the other plates out of the way. It felt like she was doing a chore rather than service. Am I sad it was a let down? Yes. The photos, reviews and pictures of the restaurant really gave me high hopes. It goes to show that every person can have a different experience at the same place..maybe ill give it another try if they have a menu change or noteworthy event. But, sorry Hav & Mar I'm gonna have to swipe left on you now.
Summary: the food was not good. The bread basket: The injera is oily and flavorless. The shiro "hummus" tastes like cold and bland vegetable soup. Otherwise, the dish was fine. The crudo sampler: The tartare was great. The fluke ceviche was pitiful with the smallest sliver of fish constituting the dish and a one dimensional vinegar flavor profile. The swediopian was good. Octopus a la plancha: The absolute worst octopus I've ever had. Incredibly overcooked. Like chewing the bottom of a shoe. Very disappointing. Havatini 2.0: Delicious. Definitely the best dish of the night. Asparagus side: cold, to the point that the hollandaise sauce was solid. seems like they use premade hollandaise which is embarrassing for a restaurant of this purported caliber. Addis York: chicken drumstick was overcooked. really chewy. The doro wot was tasty enough. I would not go back.
Abysmal experience. Service was some of the worst in my many years of dining out. The only remarkable bite was the biscuit. I could go into so much detail your head would spin. Maybe we were unlucky that night. No clue. I’ve never experienced anything quite like the full meltdown we slogged through. If we return to a Samuelsson spot it will be Red Rooster which, although it often has spotty service, is a reliable neighborhood place for us.
