Opinions de John's Coffee Shop New York
One of the better breakfast places in the area, with great selection of breakfast items. We enjoyed quick service and food. It seems very busy on weekends, but this is not surprising.
This has to be one of my favorite diners in NYC. Old school vibe, great food and friendly staff with super quick service. An unexpected gem to find in Midtown.
Ordered the truffle and roma omelette . Came with house hash potatoes and bread. Delicious food, service was quick and the omelette was prepared fresh. Also saw a lot of orders for their pancakes that looks delicious but we were too full after the eggs. The serving size was decent.
Hands down the best diner in Manhattan! I used to live near it, but now I live 30 mins away but I make the walk every weekend because you just can’t beat it. The food is delicious, the service is fast, and the prices are great! They also have a full coffee menu with lattes, cappuccinos, etc.
I was pleased to find this restaurant so close to my new home. The restaurant feels cozy despite its small size. The staff delivers attention perfected to the highest standard. Each meal provides the same satisfying experience. You should taste it before making up your mind.
You want food that’s good and fast in the morning? This is your place. Great staff, too.
John's diner is a must on the list of places to eat in NYC. We were the only non locals in the place and the food was incredibly tasty, large portions, and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend the home fries and the French toast. Combine this with friendly service and it makes for one of the best diners I've been to in the US!
I had John’s wrap and it was delicious, the steak was perfectly cooked. My husband had an omelette and he said it was very good. The only complaint was the dirty coffee mug my husband was given with his coffee.
3rd time coming here this year. Me and my partner love it here, food is lovely, the service is amazing and the atmosphere is incredible due to still like an old American style! The chefs I don’t know how they remember the orders they fascinated me. Overall, when you come to the big city, come to John’s Coffee Shop for breakfast for sure!
Great NYC diner experience. The staff were friendly and service was quick. The food was fantastic!
It's a diner and exactly what you would expect only no greasy spoons! It's clear the the owner hires cooks who love the food they prepare and the servers like being there. I didn't use the bathrooms but everything else seemed clean. We got the Reuben sandwich and Impossible burger with fries and onion rings. Fresh and hot with swift service and great portion sizes! The fries were hot but with lots of fry nuggets (underachieving bits smaller than my little finger). The onion rings were perfect as were the sandwiches. I added Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. We would definitely come back!
John's Coffee Shop was a great find while I was staying nearby. It was the perfect spot for breakfast. The service was friendly and attentive, the servers were quick to top up our coffee. The food was good value for the price.
John’s coffee shop is the best diner in NYC. I came there almost every day during my visit and all of those times the food and the service were amazing. A truly american experience. Definitely going to miss this place and will be back if I have the chance.
When I walked in they were busy and I thought I would have to wait, but they sat me within 30 seconds and got my food within 10 minutes. They work very fast regardless of being busy. I tried one of their omelets and their banana pancakes, they were great! Very comforting food. Even if they are busy, I would recommend waiting for a meal!
Great place to have breakfast - speedy friendly service and a clean establishment. Clearly loved by locals.
The food is delicious, and served quickly. The people serving are really friendly. Our favourite diner! ❤️
One of the most lovely places on the area. We arrived and instantly friendly greeting from the manager that offer us to sit at the bar. Service was quick and the food was spot on. Will recommend if you are coming on a small group to have the best experience if you are looking for a sit on place to eat. Manager was super attentive with us and always was walking arround to check that everything was good. We visited on morning of 08/05 we don't know the name of the manager but if reads this you are one of the best manager that I have the opportunity to see working on a restaurant keep the great work.
Had breakfast and it was AMAZING. Usually I can’t really tell the difference with breakfast, an egg is an egg, but the chef did good. I had corned beef hash and eggs, came with hash browns & toast. My husband had a lox and onion omelet that was also delicious. Prices are good. Staff was very pleasant. Definitely recommend!
Cute diner! I was starving when I got off the morning plane but couldn't check into my hotel for hours and this was the closest spot available. If the line is out the door, be sure to go in first to put your name on the list. I enjoyed the grilled chicken salad melt with onion rings and peppermint tea.
My husband and I came to John’s Coffee Shop 3 days in a row for breakfast because we loved it so much. We are both really big on breakfast and we give this place 5/5 stars for the food and service. The space itself was a little tight and there’s a wait on the weekends but it’s worth it.
Best breakfast diner in NY!! Very popular and great unfussy ambience! Great breakfast menu selection. Service quick. Food fresh and just what you order! A real NY feel ! Highly recommended and my favorite breakfast place when visiting!!
This is a neat little diner-style restaurant with a variety of breakfast and lunch foods. The service is fast and friendly! Seems to be a pretty busy place so there might be a little bit of a wait but it is worth it! The food is really good and the staff is friendly! The only concern I have us that I saw one if the cooks sniff the bread to my sandwich a few times before putting it on the grill?? Anyways, despite that, definitely 5 stars! Highly recommended!
We went here for breakfast and we left satisfied. The food tasted great. The chipotle eggs benedict was just the right amount of spice. I wouldn't recommend to any spice sensitive friends though. The coffee was good as well. We came a little bit after opening and almost every table was taken. We did manage to get seated though. Our server was really friendly and the food came out quick. The cafe is on a cafe so it was a nice view of the street. Very nice atmosphere to have breakfast.
Ate here every morning 3 days in a row while we were staying at the Hilton Millennium hotel. Food is decent diner food made to order, fresh, fast and piping hot. Side of fruit that I ordered was generous portion, beautiful ripe berries, I was pleasantly surprised. Price is beyond perfect. Best of all, service is fast and friendly. Like I said we came back every morning.
Proper American diner serving fresh food. Friendly and comfy surroundings. A great start to any day. Been a few times since the new opening time of 8am PCE (post covid era) and I'm delighted to report John's is thriving. As it fully deserves to be. Had scrambled eggs bacon coffee and English muffin today. Was all tip top. Service is fast efficient New York style, no nonsense, but with an added smile. I love this place. September 2023. I've noticed a subtle change recently from proper home fried sliced potato to frozen shredded potato and today it was not fully cooked through. Needs to be crispy edges and browned nicely. Mine was cold in the middle, and totally white potato. Don't let your standards slip. Please! October 2023. Update. Seems you listened. Today I had a fantastic breakfast. Potato fries were hot, cooked through, and superbly crispy browned. That's what I'm talking about😂 I decided to go in at 0830 this morning to give the griddle an extra half hour of heating up. Maybe that helped, but I'm keen to think it was just better cooking! Let's hope so. Atmosphere today was electric and brilliant. This place rocks. (Sunday morning) October 2024 and John's is buzzing. Busy and thriving. The quality of food is excellent. I love this place. November 2024, Aaaaaarrgghh no you let me down again John's!! It's all about the potato rosti. It clearly comes out a very cold store, and you cook it on the hot plate. But every now and then you get it completely wrong and there's cold uncooked bits in the centre. That's simply unacceptable. In anyone's mind. I even made sure to say "extra well done potato" please. The griddle needs three things to make things tasty and 'right'. Heat, oil, and time. You are using too little of the LAST TWO. TAKE A NOTE PLEASE. UNACCEPTABLE The thing is you are without doubt one of the best breakfast diners in Manhattan. But you need to fix this. Update April 2025: I'm a bit of a regular here and I do really like John's cafe diner. They have really listened to customer feedback and the potatoes are hot, cooked, and brown colour (color😂). I have taken to asking for my English Muffin to be well toasted and that's really good too. The two regular guys I see working at the griddle are sensational and work so hard. And at my table, I was served by Ruth this time, friendly, engaging, with a glorious smile. John's is looking up! It's gonna be a busy summer so maybe you ought to start opening up earlier like you used to!!! Yes please!
Classic spot to grab breakfast! There’s usually a line on the weekends, but goes by fairly quickly. The place is small yet cozy. We ordered a cheese omelette and blueberry pancakes with Nutella. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious! I also ordered an iced latte. To my surprise, it was the best espresso I’ve had in a while—even better than the lattes at a local cafe. Despite being very busy on a Saturday morning, our waitress was so sweet and attentive. Will definitely be coming back. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a no-frills breakfast spot.
Wanted an authentic New York diner for breakfast and John's delivered exactly what we were hoping for, even bought a T-Shirt. Service was excellent, food was superb and the place was buzzing. Thanks John's Coffee Shop for making our stay that bit more special.
Great place to stop for breakfast. There wasn’t a large crowd and they were pretty quick at sitting us. The staff was friendly and very quick and getting us our coffee and taking our order. The food came out quickly as well. I had the avocado toast which was really good. I love the fact that is in walking distance and close to our hotel.
A genuine, classic NYC diner run by a couple of brothers! The food is excellent and high quality, with quick service. It’s my go-to in the area. If you’re looking for a taste of the good-old days of NYC, this is the spot!
I got the Lemon Ricotta pancakes with a Swiss of bacon and they were absolutely delicious. I searched for a diner on Google and I saw good reviews so I stopped by. The place isn’t too big so there can by a wait but if you go solo like I did you should get seated quickly. Staff was attentive, atmosphere was 10/10. I’m definitely going back.
This could be the most lovely diner I've ever eaten at. The corn beef hash was the best I have ever had. It's an ideal location and aesthetically, the perfect vision of an NYC diner
Excellent neighborhood diner. This was my first visit and I will return. Service is friendly, not effusive, so perfect from my perspective. The atmosphere is vibrant with many frequent customers, adding to the neighborhood vibe that makes this a good place to visit ... and maybe add to your diner experiences. I had the weekend omelettw and cinnamon roll. Both were excellent. The chorizo and goat cheese blended so well in the omelette. The cinnamon roll was memorable, definitely among the best I have had. A solid, enjoyable, memorable visit.
The breakfast here was great and just what we needed after an early morning flight and check-in to our hotel. They have a weekend brunch menu, and I appreciate that you can get tater tots with any breakfast dish. The atmosphere is your classic Manhattan diner restaurant which has become exceedingly rare in New York.
A MUST if you’re in the area. We were staying at the nearby Hilton and found this diner on our first day in New York. We had our breakfast here every day during our stay. The staff are friendly, attentive and the food is excellent. The pancakes are so fresh and the eggs are lovely. Would definitely recommend this diner. We were very fortunate that we didn’t have to wait for a table as it can get very busy.
We went here for breakfast and had a great experience! This is a small corner diner and seating is very limited so you will likely have a wait, and it is street waiting. We waited 25mins for a table for 4 and it was overall worth it. Our server was pleasant, efficient and the food was exactly what you would expect from a local diner. Good portions and tasty!
If you in Manhattan NY gotta try John's coffee shop. Small corner store with tables and counter seating. We started off with the coffee and it was pretty amazing and definitely walked out with a large to go cup. The service was great and was always on top of things. The menu had some tasty foods and I couldn't decide on what to get because everything looked so good. It was my first time eating here and everyone I asked seemed excited to tell me about the food and coffee. The waffles, steak and home fries was definitely on my order. I wanted to try the French toast with cannoli will be my next meal. Trust me it was difficult to choose. So if you are in town stop by you will not be disappointed.
Great food, great coffee. Waffles are delicious. Nice place in Manhattan, close to a lot of offices and hotels (not all of them serve breakfast). Service is super good, the staff is super nice. The place is small and seems to be crowded when it is full but worth the wait to be seated.
My favorite diner in the US. The food, service, atmosphere— everything is 5 star here. Their warmth while serving yum food reminds me of home. They always bring a big smile to my face. This diner should be in “must visit NYC” list.
We found this diner on our third morning in New York and decided this was the place we wanted to go for breakfast every morning since! The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There may be a queue as it seems to be a very popular place. There are all the traditional diner favourites, plus other dishes. My partner and I have tried the pancakes, french toast, Mexican breakfasts and traditional American breakfast and they are all delicious. The portions are huge so make sure you have an appetite or share!
We wanted a traditional and local experience, found this place on google and it wasn’t too far from hotel. Staff were diverse (which I love seeing , especially as a POC and Muslim ) they were helpful and kind and just felt good vibes being there. We had pancakes which were so yummy and lush mug of hot chocolate
Lived in the neighborhood for 12 years but only tried John’s recently and it has already become a staple for us. It is worth waiting in line. It’s a classic, cozy diner. We love having breakfast there at the counter or at a table. The ricotta pancakes are delicious and I’m obsessed with the chorizo quesadillas. It feels like a classic dinner I grew up going to. Prices are so reasonable you can go often. 5 stars for sure.
We walked over from Little Charlie Hotel and got seated just before it completely filled up. I got the Athenian Benedict and the portion was pretty decent. My son got a classic breakfast and he agreed that his portion was decent. The service was quick and friendly. The nostalgic cafe counter seating and tables made our NYC experience more memorable. So glad we came early at the right time to be seated and not wait. This place was consistently busy every time we walked by after our visit. Next time I will try the pancakes. Highly recommend this cafe.
Our final day in NYC, thought we should try this place for breakfast. It was great - wish we had tried it on our first day so that could’ve visited more and tried more of their dishes. I had a 44th St Omelette with sun-dried tomatoes and goats cheese, my partner had eggs over easy. We both loved the home fries - mmmmmmmm like a deconstructed hash-brown - delicious! Good coffee too. Felt really authentic and the service was friendly, informative, efficient and fast. It’s clearly a popular place and I can see why. If we ever come to New York again we will definitely have breakfast here again.
The perfect cozy diner. Had a big variety of food and servers were so kind and attentive. Everything was delicious but I would highly recommend the spinach pie- our waitress said her mother makes them homemade and, after eating every crumb, I believe it. We also had chocolate chip pancakes, a pastrami sandwich, fries, and eggs/bacon (we were starving, don’t judge!), which were all amazing.
I must have passed this place at least three times in the last week. But for some reason I didn't know even existed until it popped up in my google feed last night . It is highly highly rated and with good reason. The food it's simple old school diner/coffee shop fare. Breakfast seems to be. They're a big thing, but they do have lunch.Offerings as well. I went exactly at 10 o'clock in the morning. And there was Seating available. I ordered lemon ricotta pancakes with the cherry sauce and a side of sausage. Who knew adding lemon zest and ricotta to pancakes could make them so outrageously divine? I did like the cherry sauce. But my personal preference is sour cherry. The sausage was cooked well, but still juicy... Service is great. Everyone seems very personable and helpful. There's no question. I will be back to try some of their omelets and other specialties. Also, keep in mind. They are open from 8am to 3pm everyday
We really loved the hash brown that came with the eggs Benedict a lot. Very well cooked with a nice char and browning. Eggs were perfectly poached as well. The omelette was also very tasty! The French toast with the cannoli fillings can be a bit filling after a while, but it was a good choice for sharing. Overall, a delightful place for breakfast. The cafe is quite small, so it may feel a bit squeeze. It can get very crowded so be prepared to wait if you come during the peak time!
According to the reviews, we came to this place. Although the bar looked overcrowded, the staff found a free seat for us. The atmosphere reflects NYC. Lots of people, loud, staff in a hurry; they try to please the client as much as possible, and the guests are constantly changing. We waited maybe 3 minutes for our breakfast. The staff is incredibly fast and diligent. The food is authentic. Portions are big. The service price ratio is very good. If you want to eat well and feel the real NYC like on TV, come here!
Very good breakfast. Classic diner food, quick service! Eggs Benedict was poached perfectly, chicken and waffles was yummy and sausage gravy was great! Small but quaint!

If you're a coffee lover in New York, you know how much the first impression counts—even before that first sip. A coffee shop’s vibe and offerings need to shine not just in person, but online too…
15 min in line to get a table, but totally worth it. We ate pommes frites, bagels with smoked salmon/cream cheese, eggs benedict, bacon and some more. Easily the best breakfast in New York.
Absolutely 5*, the best coffee we have had!!! We liked it so much we ended up here for breakfast every day during our trip. A truly amazing diner with wonderful staff.
We have eaten here 3 times this week. Amazing place with great food and friendly helpful staff! Loved the banana and nut pancakes and the toasted reuben. Would highly recommend.
Went for breakfast and the food and service wee excellent. I had oatmeal which was nasty and filling. pancakes were delicious. Service was great
We just had an awesome and huge breakfast here. It’s not posh but it is busy and friendly. A little queue helped us know we were in for a treat. Five minutes wait was so worthwhile

It's a good, fast diner. Always has people in it (breakfast seems popular all day) but always also has seats at the counter.
Overall: B Layout & decor: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Food quality: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cleanliness: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Customer service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Timeliness: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: good little place for breakfast & coffee. No sourdough bread/toast but not a deal breaker. I’m a 1st timer at NYC & kinda reminded me of Seinfeld tbh. Coffee was good & service was good. Got busy fast!! Would come back
Dinner with good food and friendly staff. Here, you will find your favorite breakfast foods. The place is clean, has windows on both sides that allow you to see what's happening in the street, and bring an abundance of natural light, making it an enjoyable place to have your breakfast.
This place was good. I got the blueberry French toast. Be warned that this is not French toast with blueberries or blueberry sauce. This is rich and heavy blueberry bread griddled a la French toast. The most entertaining thing about this place was watching the main cook in the rear from the bar. His skill, awareness, and speed were amazing. The main reason for docking the star is because we noticed of the six hands preparing food between both the cooks and a person who seemed to be the owner, only one hand was covered with a plastic glove. Most food that went out was touched by a bare hand. You learn a lot sitting right next to the kitchen.
Nominated as one of the best diners in New York! The food here is excellent, and it's one of the most practical spots for a quick and satisfying lunch. The service is top-notch—I was seated at the bar and really enjoyed watching the kitchen in action. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality you get. Just a heads-up: there’s usually a line on weekends, but it’s well worth the wait. Highly recommended! Let me know if you'd like a shorter version or one with a more casual or formal tone. Good on all three categories, food was quick, service was timely, old fashioned NYC diner.

We came here and had a waffle and bacon, egg and cheese roll. The food was delicious and portion sizes were big. Service was quick. Would visit again.
I'm not sure what all the hype is about this place. Just one person's opinion, but the food is your standard breakfast taste. Ordered eggs Benedict, and a pancake eggs and bacon as the choices for two people. Hot chocolate on the side too. Pancakes were overcooked and the rest was flavorless. The hollandaise sauce was nothing special. Disappointed with the trek to get there out of other options, so won't be coming back. $46 for two people with tip.
pancakes were good. egg Benedict was not good, wasn't seasoned and English muffin was low quality
They forgot the cheese in my wife’s “chesse and egg bagel”... the unconcerned waitress took the uneaten half, added cheese, then brought it back to the table (it was cold). I was disappointed by the lack of consideration. Love the nostalgic vibe, but probably wouldn’t return. (My bagel looked amazing though).
Total let down, treats tourists as second class. Came as a family of 4 for proper American breakfast having read good reviews. Arrived excited. The staff seated the locals who came in after us but …
Guys are super rude. Food is upper mid standard diner fare. If you go in and put your name on the list they’ll make you wait outside for 40 mins then say they forgot about you. Overrated - try Morningstar on 51st and 2nd.
Was really craving pancakes. The place I wanted to go to was packed, so I looked quickly for a place nearby where the pictures of pancakes looked good and had good reviews. Everyone was really nice, but the pancakes were a huge disappointment. I always finish my food, but I just couldnt bring myself to finish. They were burnt/hard and overcooked on the bottom. I couldnt even cut them with a knife, but the top was crumbly and dry. The only good thing about the pancakes is that they were thick, which I like. The guy next to me didnt finish his eithers. His looked more burnt than mine. It was also really busy and eating at the counter was cramped. I regretted my decision immediately. I should have just walked further out and chose a different place but I was hungry. It was such a let down, I ended up leaving NY early.
