Was in the neighborhood and saw this new Chinese restaurant when I was passing by. Decided to try it out and I’m glad I did. I got the roast pork and it was very flavorful. Tastes authentic and will be sure to go back in the future.

Service was fast and straight to the point that Pork dumplings w peanut and hot spicy sauce was amazing will go again

Had dinner yesterday and ordered spicy beef stewed noodle and ribs, by far the best I’ve ever had compared to other restaurants!! I was full but ordered shrimp dumplings for take out as a late night snack - this was also delish!!

New location, same great dishes. Happy to see The Cottage back in business. The new location isn't as charming as the previous one but still nice. Friendly staff and reasonable prices.

The old Cottage had been on my most frequently contact list for at least 15 years and thought I would have to eventually delete it when it closed down. But a random walk down broadway led me to cross paths with the New Cottage. I went in and order and my old taste buds were reignited! I don't know if the cooks are the same, but I think it tastes better than before. It seems a little cleaner tasting. While I loved the overall taste, one of my main complaints about the old Cottage was that the meat / vegetable ratio was seriously light on the meat, but it is definitely not the case anymore. I prefer the old dining room, but the new one is bright, clean, and more casual. I've ordered delivery at least 10 times now and the service is excellent as always and food is delivered fast. No doubt upper west siders will welcome their return!

I love this place. Some of the best food in the area. The staff and owners are so friendly and accommodating.

Wonderful Chinese food, generally with a Szechuan touch, that has been reliably excellent over the years (in a variety of locations). Simple setting but affordable. One of our favorites. Wish they hadn't closed their location at 111th and Amsterdam, which was closer to where we live.

The Cottage is back! As a West 70s resident of more than two decades, I was sad to hear of the closing amid the pandemic of this longtime neighborhood favorite, but the phoenix was quickly reborn—and happily stuck to basically the same dishes and recipes at their new location only a block away. The Sesame Chicken is my fave. Friendly staff. Give it a try.

Came here on a whim and LOVED IT! Thought we were not that hungry but ended up eating 2 whole plates and 2 servings of spring rolls. On that note, these are the best spring rolls I’ve ever had.

We really enjoyed our experience here, made reservations to make sure our 'party of five' was able to be seated. The food was very flavorful and came to the table quickly. I heard this place was newly reopened and welcomed their service and hope we contribute to their continued success.

This restaurant is definitely my to go on the UWS now. I tried the Szechuan dumplings with spicy oil and peanut butter sauce and it was so flavorful. The spicy oil and peanut butter sauce complemented really well with each other. I also had the chef signature dish, braised beef filet with chili sauce, and the beef was so tender. Can't wait to come back for more!

T

Consistent quality, friendly service, and a wide range of affordably priced fusion Chinese and Cantonese dishes in the UWS. Lunch specials are all $11 and made fresh while you wait. Waitresses are all polite and offer quick service. Great place to bring your friends or family for a relaxed lunch or dinner that wont break your budget. Must try: Half of a roasted duck, West lake Beef Chowder, Spicy Shrimp Sichuan dumplings, Pan fried green beans, and of course, General Tao's Chicken!

1st time here. I was in the area, was hungry, and place appealed to me. Thus, just walked in and was immediately seated. Staff was courteous and friendly. Food was good and plentiful.

We stopped by with some friends for a quick snack and ended up getting: - Szechuan Dumplings $9: very flavorful with an interesting twist of peanut sauce; would definitely recommend as it was a favorite amongst us - Cold noodles with sesame $8: fresh cold noodles with sesame and a hint of peanut as well; pretty appetizing as well - Crispy Fresh Cucumber $8: this appetizer tastes very similar to Din Tai Fung's cucumber salad; would recommend if you like vinegary cucumbers - Crispy Fried Chicken $9: these wings were juicy and crisp and the skin was marinated in curry spices - Cumin seasoned beef with red chili peppers $17: a good portion of beef and veggies dunked in spicy sauce; not overwhelmingly spicy I would definitely recommend this spot for its Szechuan dumplings, crispy fresh cucumbers, and crispy fried chicken for appetizers!

If you are looking for traditional Chinese/Szechuan food that reminds you of home, come here. They have a variety of choices with Szechuan and dim sum. If you come here, you HAVE to get the famous Szechuan shrimp and pork dumping and their xiao long baos. Prices are very reasonable. Overall, service was great and food was yummy. I would DEFINITELY recommend this place. It can get busy but for sure worth the wait. 10/10 🥟🍜

I’ve been to a lot of incredible Chinese restaurants in NYC and this is at the top of the list. Dumplings are some of the best I’ve ever had and prices are very reasonable for the portions.

I’ve always wanted to try the food here. My husband and I were on our way to get something else when our train got delayed… we decided to walk down on Broadway and he had to stop for cash. We instantly changed our minds when we saw this place on the corner. It was one of those meant to be things… we’re so happy we did. We were greeted warmly by everyone there. My son who’s 3 was welcomed. They adored him! We ordered Chinese broccoli, chicken wings, fried vegetable dumplings, fried rice, and sesame chicken. The oolong tea was delicious! 💯 recommend! I can’t wait to eat here again.

My husband and I recently moved down the street from New Cottage and have been consistently impressed by their dishes both in person and as takeout. We went about 5 times in our first few weeks of moving! Everyone is very friendly and the service is prompt. The prices are also very reasonable! We especially enjoy the Pork Spicy Dumplings with Peanut & Hot Spicy sauce, Corn & Egg Drop Soup, Cumin Fish Filet, and Chinese Broccoli to name a few!

This is the definition of a neighborhood Chinese family-run establishment. Often busy, quick service and great menu. Nothing too fancy here. It is clean, bright, and lively. I recommend the pan-fried dumplings. The shredded beef with broccoli and white rice is very good too.

We stumbled into this restaurant today for lunch and we couldn’t have been happier. Besides being super clean, the New Amsterdam serves fresh and well cooked Chinese food at a really affordable price. The waitress was very friendly and super fast. We will be back.

We live down the block and when it opened we decided to check it out. We are glad we did, this is our new go to Chinese food restaurant. The inside is cozy, the staff are attentive, and the food is great. We especially love the fried dumplings (absolutely epic) and the chicken broccoli. The service is also very quick. You can come in and have a fast awesome meal or you could come and have an hour and a half dinner and both would feel completely natural here. Would recommend.

Excellent food. I had shrimp dumplings in spicy peanut sauce, shrimps with walnuts and Pad Thai. Excellent service. Immaculate bathrooms. Highly recommended. Peter and free wine are missing. Benny is an excellent manager. I ate there two nights in a row. After 6pm, the line to get in is long.

We just ordered from New Cottage for the first time last night. The food was wonderful, in particular the Szechuan dumplings. We ordered a few appetizers, delicious fried chicken wings, crispy scallion pancake. Our entrees were wonderful as well! Delivery was fast. Great that they are in the neighborhood. Can’t wait to try more on the menu.

I’m from Canton so I decided to give the Cantonese section of the menu a try. Surprisingly it reminded me of home so I’m glad it’s only a few blocks away from my work. The food was mouth watering delicious. My standards are pretty high especially when it’s Cantonese food and I’m in love. The service was great, Benny was hilarious. Definitely a restaurant you should try. I would add photos but i already ate most of it before I remembered to lol

Best Chinese food in the UWS the food is authentic delicious and fresh. The service is quick and on point. Pricing is fair for the quality and portions. Honestly food is amazing and service is great! Been here probably at least 50x for either takeout or dine in and food and service has been amazing! I came from out of state to see my friends for the weekend and the New Cottage was the highlight of my trip. We had several dishes but the Sweet and Sour Pork was my favorite. It was tasty but the taste wasn't too overwhelming like some other places. The food came out quickly and the servers paid careful attention to us, promptly clearing plates and refilling waters as needed. I will definitely keep this place in mind when I come back to the city.

THE FOOD HERE IS PHENOMENAL!! It was so good I came here 3 days in a row to try their lunch specials and also their chef specials. Prices were affordable with quick and great customer service. Hands down one of my favorite traditional Chinese restaurants, let alone just the UWS. Their Szechuan style shrimp dumplings were so good I could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner. Everything I tasted here was so flavorful and not just another Chinese restaurant who overly salts their food. They also had outdoor seating which was great for me and my pup. Overall, there are many options for different taste palettes as well. I will definitely be back again.

This is a Chinese Restaurant. It is neat, clean, enough chairs and tables. It also have some outside seating. Cooking is very very good, customer service is excellent. Price high I felt. Their menu is big, presentation is excellent. Restaurant is busy, so, sometime reservation is needed.

While living just 3 blocks away from the New Cottage, I had read about its new opening location and menu details on both the UWS Rag and I Love the UWS and finally cautiously walked in need of really spicy food. Easily accommodated a lunch deadline, not much time to view the menu, was delighted with shredded beef and hot peppers, Won Ton soup before, $9.98 (a 20 %discount was applied (till 11/15). What a treat and the "spider webs of my brain were dissolved by the hot, yet so tasty Szechuan sauce, all the while meeting next table an opera singer and Russian friend loading up on good food before the evening Metropolitan Opera performance of "Meistersinger", a 6 hour plus performance. Next afternoon I could only think SCALLOPS (remembering the wonderful plentiful lunches of the now defunct SILK ROAD Palace), and, too late for lunch, opted to stay, choosing in "pepper sauce". I commented later to the neighboring table: this place is a HIT. They simply concurred while devouring mountains of various dishes. Low and behold another evening I was, rather than looking into my fridge - ugh, not wanting to prepare - and came in for another scallops preparation in a spicy black bean sauce, (but my downfall for calories also the wonderful Szechuan shrimp dumplings that I had seen on a number of tables and recommendation for a MUST-HAVE). For my palate even more enticing than the pepper sauce.. A couple of men, next table, who equally wolfed down mountains of different dishes, finally smiled at me with pleasure about food and quick, attentive service. And do I dare admit that yesterday after a meeting at a coffee shop on my street, 80th and Amsterdam, headed back to the New Cottage for some spice of life and a late luncheon... Yes, I have pictures of all, but no time to post just now. It is a very simple, but well-done place, from the manager to the waitresses quick, friendly service, no fuss, but always coming back to see if all was well. The "audience" that wonderful mix of simple people and unexpected finds, i.e a opera singer and Russian, who, getting into conversation, both knew my German hometown in East Germany, Erfurt, Martin Luther country (the original one). Not only could I eat good Chinese food, as exemplified here, every day, but a world traveler of now a very young 81 years old have been to Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore a good number of times. I wish the New Cottage good success, as the revolving doors already shows to me. I have yet to eat myself through the menu, perhaps bringing my own wine, while the wine license may take its time. I don't speak Chinese.... what's buena fortuna, ha?

We were thrilled to hear that The Cottage has reopened! My pareja & I excitedly took our moms for dinner. The food was delicious and service was good. We do miss the ambiance & chill vibe of the original Cottage & the ever flowing boxed wine! I think we missed that the most!

The shredded pork with dried bean curd lunch special ($12.95 plus tax) had julienned celery which contrasted nicely with the bean curd. The steamed roast pork bun ($6.95) was ok. The corner location of New Cottage lets in lots of light, which is the best feature of its rather plain interior.

S
Samantha D'Esposito (Samsy)

My Mom and I went there and there was already a single crowded table being loud and obnoxious. Even I was treated poorly. The loud and obnoxious table was a bit of a concern because my Mom is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids at home sometimes. I almost didn't get the Coke that I ordered.

Glad to see another Chinese restaurant at this location after being vacated by La Caridad. Pork fried rice, average. Beef chow fun, average, missing flavor and the wok work missing the smokiness of dragon breath. Salt pepper pork, nicely aromatic, needs more crispiness. Hot and sour soup average again, less starch needed. Egg roll, average, a bit on the small side. Open two months, place needs work to stand out like their predecessor. Nice front desk person, very personable. Wish you best, just eat around NYC and make your food taste like the great ones. Chinese food in NYC is a tough market. I'll visit again later and see if different. A good place for the average whatever diner, not for the good Chinese food snobs that NYC has created.

N

The Cottage was my favorite NYC Chinese spot. I went to the new location on Tues, although the decor was minimal and clean, I miss the old location's decor of the warm, rich wood-paneled walls. I ordered the General Tso's chicken off the lunch special menu,it lacked flavor I've previously come to expect from the old Cottage. Also miss the complimentary wine that was served at the old location

It's under new mgt. (Used to be on Amsterdam and 77th St.) The older one closed during pandemic. I loved that place. They would serve the patrons white wine for free. No more. I don't drink but my friend who I would meet for lunch does. They don't give you almond cookies for free anymore. They sell them now. Prices are slightly higher.

We have been here once or twice before and had pretty decent service. Not sure what happened today, but out of four of us, only three received our meal. No waiter came by to check on us until we were all sitting there after the rest of us finished our meal. My husband did not get his meal and when he mentioned it the waitress and asked for the check. She proceeded to go to the system and delete his meal and give us the check. The least she could have done was offer the meal before doing that. Not very happy about that.

Should be called “New Colonic” – the hearty beef noodle soup ($14.50) and bizarre pork dumplings in peanut sauce ($11.50) are so salty, you will be visiting the bathroom regularly after the meal. The dining room is very pleasant if a bit bland; the staff is prompt but pushy. But the prices (over $20 for almost every dish) make this exclusively a Chinese restaurant for rich UWS families.

The eggrolls were changed to a different size, But yet are the same price. I spent $18 on 1 order of scallion pancakes and two eggrolls two egg rolls were so small. They’re a small as the duck sauce packets, Not sure why they’ve been doing this lately.

The food is wonderful. The prices are very good. But a group of extremely loud chinese speakers create a very noisy atmosphere, which make it difficult for costumers who want to talk among themselves. We like this restaurant but we might never come back and we do not recommend it.

The meals were pretty underwhelming for me and my friends . It’s also more pricey than your average Chinese restaurant. I won’t really be coming back but the food was definitely fresh . Vegetables was not on the house as well. I’ll give the shrimp dumplings a 5/5 because it was fresh ! My House special lo mein was not wow, neither was my friend’s fried curry fish. It was a 2.8/5 experience

I can’t eat anything with MSG. It has been good until today. They explained it has MSG in fish sauce and maybe other sauces that they can’t control. Very bad that I can’t eat their dishes anymore.

Had dinner and lunch here several times since they opened. Food is good though not consistent, and doesn't live up to the quality of the original cottage, which I went to over the few decades it was there on w 77th and Amsterdam. And, the prices are much higher. Had dinner there last night. The szechuan dumplings were not hot (temperature) and disappointing. Ordered scallops with black bean sauce, which were ok, and sauteed asparagus, and hot and sour soup. The soup was mediocre, to sour and not enough heat. The clincher was the 8 INCH LONG STRAND OF HAIR which showed up in the asparagus!! Pretty disgusting, especially since we were nearly finished with dinner. That finished it for us. They removed the asparagus from the bill. I think I'm going to start looking for a better Chinese restaurant on the UWS.

G
Gareth Collins

My wife and I used to like going to the original cottage on Amsterdam Avenue. While we didn't go there too often, before the pandemic we had been there a couple of times a year for the past couple of decades. This was the first time we had gone back to the cottage since the pandemic, now at its new location. We ordered the shredded pork in garlic sauce and the spicy diced chicken. The spicy diced chicken was OK but the shredded pork was way too sweet. What made us give the really bad ratings though was how the waiter treated us. After making the order she asked if we wanted some vegetables for the table. She made it seem like it came with the order so we said OK. It was just bland snow pea leaf which turned out at the end was just another full priced dish. We came out feeling scammed. We won't be back which is a shame.

T
Tap Rudra

After we had ordered, the server asked us if we also wanted steamed vegetables. I asked what they meant by steamed vegetables, and they described what they were offering. I said sure, why not, thinking about how my orange chicken entree might not come with many vegetables. The vegetables came, and while it was fine, I was kindof shocked when the bill came to see the steamed vegetables were the same price ($18.95) as my orange chicken entree. To be honest, this felt like a pushy up-sell, which was not what I was expecting for a standard Chinese restaurant like this one. While the environment was nice and the food was decent, I was frustrated with that element of the experience.

I come here all the time but they need to calm down with their price increases. $30 for general tso and an egg roll is kind of insane….

Table service started with dirty plates! We had to request clean plates that at best were wiped down with an old rag. Rice was good, but shrimps could've been cooked more. The service and food has declined greatly! While we tried to eat what was decent, two women servers were standing near our table talking nonstop so we asked for our check. To top it all off our lady server asked about a cash tip as if she did not carelessly give us dirty plates and provide the rudest service I've ever experienced!

Ordered pad Thai tasted stale . I told them it's tasted stale or undercooked they took it and just heated the dish and gave it back to me . Worse pad thai I've ever had .

Today at 3:30pm they turned off the air conditioning and said they would put it back on at dinner. Very poor service and the chicken dish had very little in it. The new owner’s of the so called new cottage only care about making money. I was a very loyal customer at the original cottage at 77th and Amsterdam ave . Find your self another Chinese restaurant.

(Used to be on Amsterdam and 77th St.) I don’t know what happened but you can tell it’s under new management. We recently visited the new location. We finished eating ready to pay the bill and our server didn’t give my husband time to close the bill she immediately started counting the money right in front of us. I have never went to a restaurant where they counted your money in front of you, usually they do that at the register. After our server did that she told us that tip was 15% of the bill. She didn’t even give us a time to relax after eating before we were ready to go. I always leave the tip on the table before we leave. Totally unprofessional and unacceptable. Her doing those thing really made me & my family uncomfortable. My husband has been going to this restaurant since he was 15 and never received this type of treatment. I will never go back there because when we expressed this to the manager they didn't show understanding & lacked compassion on the matter.

The food was BAD on Amsterdam Avenue.....and it's just slightly less Bad, but just as greasy on Broadway. And deny as much as they like, but there's plenty of MSG in the food. And add to this....being a loyal but reluctant diner here, I find it disgraceful that the owner chose to challenge me when I told him they send an expensive order of spare ribs - ORDERED TO BE CRISP & WELL-DONE - but sent to me instead cooked ALMOST BLOODY (and this is pork) and when I called to report this, they were closed. He is unwilling - as they always are - to do the right thing for a customer. Too much rhetoric....too many excuses.......Such a shame. They have now lost a full family of customers and the extended family that lives all over their UWS neighborhood and who will never set foot in this dive restaurant.

Currently sitting here and have been waiting for half an hour. 2 party that came in maybe 15 min after me got their food in less than 10 min. I ordered the duck a white rice. It was not busy. If I’d had known takeout would be faster service than dine in I would’ve gone that option. I have very little desire to come back here any time soon.

So i was wrong about a bill i thought i was overcharged for but when i called to dispute or confirm the charge they wanted me to jump through loops and becanme very rude. I won't go here anymore because of that. Also there food is just regular food you can get at any other Chinese shop for way less literally nothing different about it. it's pricy because they serve it in square plates.. try being nicer to people especially when I just called to confirm a charge... with a dam conformation number at that... sheesh.

The food was bad, but at least it was overpriced. Take out order. Hot and Sour soup, Pork Fried Rice, Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce. None of it good, especially at that price. Disappointing.

One of us enjoyed the food but the other didn’t, Service was terrible, felt rushed from the minute we walked in, we were only offered the chance to order one drink. waitress was very abrupt, bill was put in front of us without asking if we wanted anything else, felt bullied into giving a tip when we were already in the process of putting a tip on the table. I wouldn’t ever go back. Avoid at all cost.

Polite service but nothing like the old place on Amsterdam. My chicken dish was horrible, dry and flavorless. The hot and sour soup felt like I was sipping silicon. I sent it back for a Wonton soup and it was not as bad. Maybe other dishes are better than the ones I had, but I'll pass on returning here. Cannot believe all the good reviews.

I have been coming here since it opened which was good. The place has been changing for the worse. Ordered shrimp with broccoli and the dish was mostly broccoli. Hardly any shrimp. The waitresses try and sell you dinner portions and other things at lunch hour. Not friendly staff. Won't be going back after giving them my business for 4 years.

Tonight I had to discard the food I ordered because it was filled with chopped garlic, so much so that it was inedible. A couple of weeks ago I ordered and the chicken was slimy and tasted really off. Discard that order because we didn't want to get sick. Something has happened with the chefs here and it isn't good. I am no longer going to order from here since losing $50.

I was highly disappointed!! My girlfriend and I are a lesbian latina couple. As soon as we entered the restaurant we were completely ignored while waiting to be seated. Then the service was terrible, they were blatantly treating the other customers with so much attention and respect but was rude and dismissive to us as if we weren’t even there. The food was tasteless. We had to ask for our drinks to be refilled while other tables were actively getting refills. The servers were so friendly to everyone else. They didn’t even give us fortune cookies with our check which all the other tables got. They also left out the rice when packing our to go food. My partner and I worked is service for many years so being treated so poorly made us feel very bad. If you’re queer and/or POC, avoid this place! Also very pricey.

Oh my god, this is the worst service I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant! I had just sat down and didn’t even have time to look at the menu when the waitress asked me to order. When she brought the food, she practically threw it onto our table. She even forgot the drinks we ordered.

The food tastes bad and expensive, I just ordered chicken broccoli with lunch special and the website and menu prices were much lower than the actual charges, they charged me $15 for it ! If the food is good I’m ok with the price, but the food tastes really bad! Not worth it
