Opinions de Viand Cafe New York
This place is great. Our waiter showed us right to a table outside. He spoke Spanish to my wife and English to myself and my uncle, which we all appreciated. The food came out quickly and was delicious. Great coffee and great service.
If you're looking for a local, delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch place, Viond is a great choice. On a Saturday morning, we were seated quickly and attended to quickly as well. Our waitress was nice and helpful and we got our delicious hallah french toast quickly! Definitely would recommend.
Excellent New York classics like burgers and steak sandwich as well as cheesecake served by friendly, helpful staff. Strong espresso too. We came here for lunch ahead of visiting the Natural History Museum, skipped dinner with ease.
Delightful New York style Café with traditional delicious breakfast! Very attentive service!
Great NYC diner fare with copious breakfast and brunch/ lunch options that can be ordered simultaneously during a.m.s. The tuna melt is a stand out at any time of the day. GREAT Fries! A sharply well-staffed operation with very friendly and attentive wait staff. Tables are expertly but gently turned at busy hours. Only caveat: coffee cups are on the small size and refills not promptly offered. But otherwise, a decent place for a good and filling feed. Very convenient to Beacon Theater and Hotel.
Update— spoke to the owner. He apologized wholeheartedly and sincerely. That’s all I can ask. Mistakes happen and this is the way to handle them. We’ll be back. Original post: I often take my kid there for breakfast. The first few times we’ve gone they’ve been great— timely, responsive, and understanding. The most recent time we went the opposite happened. While we were seated, the staff moved the stroller. No problem— I understand that the diner gets busy. As we went to leave, I put the little one’s coat on in the stroller— in the location where the staff put it. Figured I was doing what was most convenient. A member of the staff came over and yelled at us and loudly huffed away. I was annoyed and asked to talk to the manager. The manager and the staff member fabricated some story where I was changing him in the restaurant and blamed us. I’m appalled. If it’s too busy to accommodate us, I understand— just say something. But don’t yell at us when we’re preparing to leave and doing so where we were relocated to. Aside from the experience it’s a classic diner. It’s fine without kids. Don’t bring your kids. And we won’t be going back.
Perfect neighborhood diner . Quick and efficient service , great variety to choose from , plus all the staples usually found at NY diners . Price is fair and so is the quantity of food served and the reliable quality . Great neighborhood vibe. I usually go for breakfast and everything is consistently good
Enjoyed the waffle w/ strawberries & blueberries. The food is always fresh, the restaurant is clean and the selection is first rate. Oksana was our server and she is lovely and very efficient. The waitstaff is excellent.
Viand boasts one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Agnes is a lovely Kenyan server who is way too good at her job and promotes an amazing experience. The bacon is exquisite and so are the waffles. The OJ is always fresh and on warm days, sitting outside is a blissful brunch experience that I cannot recommend highly enough. It might be a little pricey but very worth the spend especially for its consistency in service and taste.
The fastest service I’ve ever experienced. Great food simple and delicious! I got a omelette and a side of fruit. The fruit was fresh omelette perfect and my husband asked for an item off menu and they were able to accommodate him. Only downside is it’s cash only.
This is my third time here. I have been here twice a year ago and then today. The service was awesome and the food was delicious! Definitely try it! The Nutella pancakes are to die for! The egg white omelette delicious. I will be back before I leave town for sure!
Miguel C was our server. Great service, fast and very attentive. Food came out fast and it was super delicious! Pricing was fair, what you would normally expect to spend on a diner. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a classic diner experience!
Nice diner-style place. Reminded me of the diner in Seinfeld (I'm sure they've heard that before), only bigger and busier. Staff were super friendly, great service. I had a chicken salad sandwich; it must have been 3 inches thick. One friend had the buttermilk pancakes, said they were really good. The other had a breakfast... quesadilla? I can't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up. Prices were a little high, but what can you do, it's New York Conveniently located right next to the Beacon Theater
Had a great meal! I had the Thanksgiving Special and it was wonderful. The Cream of Turkey Soup deserves a special mention here along with the apple chestnut stuffing. I've seen a couple reviews saying the service wasn't good, but every server I interacted with was friendly. (Maybe not the best photo, but it tasted great!)
Cozy place to get some hearty eats. Large portions, lots of flavor. Staff was attentive and genuinely nice. We went for breakfast and had a variety of things. I’d come here again and again if I lived here! Favorite thing: they figured out how to do chx and waffles without all the grease!
We came here every day of our 5 day trip for at least 2 meals. We had something different each time. Every meal was great quality, hot, and fresh. Will definitely make this a staple every time we visit.
Holy Mother of God, a friend invited me to eat at Uber Eats and, by God, I've never eaten such a delicious meat and vegetable dish. Thank you very much.
Viand Cafe looks like a diner but serves exceptionally delicious dinners! It’s really a high class restaurant wrapped in a very casual interior. My wife had a delicious Branzino and I had their turkey dinner which was so delicious complete with fantastic stuffing and cranberry sauce that was as perfect as any Thanksgiving dinner, I’ve ever had!
A great value diner with amazing service. I couldn’t believe how good the lamb was. The menu said chops but I received 3 thick and juicy, beautiful lamb cutlets. The coffee is great….and limitless. This isn’t a place for a gourmet experience but what you’ll get is good, honest fare with a side of old-fashioned great service. Some of the more big-name NYC restaurant's could learn from Viand’s team.
We were looking for a classic Manhattan brunch spot, and this was perfect. The food was solid, the atmosphere great. As others noted, it's pricey, but that comes with the location. My only complaint: The surprise 3.5% "fee." Please be honest and just roll it into the menu prices .
Had a great omelette and bacon breakfast here. Good service, was a Friday and got a table no problem. Coffee refills were plentiful and large portions!
Delicious chopped kale salad with grilled chicken. Although too many raisins (not complaining, its just a lot of sugar) i loved it.
Visited for breakfast whilst staying on the Upper West side. Cafenis part of the Beacon Hotel .Lots of tables available and quickly seated. Service was impeccable...can't remember the server's name (thin, strikingly beautiful black lady with afro styled hair) and the food was great - we got banana pancakes and didn't need to eat again until late afternoon!
The Viand is a classic NYC Diner with Vintage Tables & Booths in excellent shape... a great Menu of Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Small Plate assortments... a congenial & efficient Waitstaff... and it is right next-door to the Beacon Hotel where we usually stay on our periodic visits back to The City to get our much-needed dose of High Culture!
I'm so happy to have found this diner. As you will learn from most of my reviews. New York diners are the best most affordable way to eat in the city and save money for sight seeing. Best part about Viand is it is right next door to the Beacon Theater so if you are going to see a show get dinner and drinks here. You will save a fortune instead of buying drinks at beacon. I had a rootbeer float and my partner had cheese fries. They were both excellent! Viand is my new Before a Beacon show tradition!
I had an amazing cheeseburger and fries at this friendly neighborhood diner. My friend and I had a sweet table outside where patrons with dogs were welcome. The service was fast, the follow ups frequent but not intrusive. The menu is extensive and covers any craving you might have. Would highly recommend!
Great service great dishes great deals, before 5pm 28 dollar dinner menu, from steak to shrimp. Delicious
We ate here almost everyday on our trip our kids were welcomed and the service was excellent. Their Cesar Salad and linguini parmigiana were the most delicious meals we had my kids loved the club BLT with fries. Wonderful staff super sweet with my kiddos and the mangers were very kind. A nice and clean diner with staff that will wait on you with a smile courteous, friendly, and fast service. Our cups were always full and the tables and floor always clean. Wonderful!
I cannot get enough of this place! I’ve been about 5 times now, and everything I’ve tried is delicious. All the waitstaff are very friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable (by NYC standards) and the portions are huge. It’s the perfect local diner! My husband and I are intent on becoming regulars.
I am a NY diner (aka “Greek diner”) aficionado. I grew up on Long Island and waitressed my way through college at a diner in Nassau County. Sadly, many of these diners have closed, which is a great loss. Happily, Viand still stands as a shining example of a classic diner. The service is warm and friendly and the food is honest and straightforward. It is well-prepared and well-presented, providing excellent value for money. The staff is great. This is in contrast to other diners (I won’t name them), which know they are the only option in the neighborhood and customers are made to feel as though they are lucky to be waited on. To visitors: skip the Starbucks and Le Pain Quotidien at head to Viand. It represents the best of what NYC has to offer. BTW, I don’t know the source of their bagels, but they are among the best in the city.
This is a wonderful restaurant! Diego is very attentive and a super good waiter! Terrific service! The food was excellent . Cozy atmosphere. We would highly recommend.
Overall love this place. You won’t find a better “regular” Diner/Coffee Shop. It’s not trying to be anything that it’s not. We come all the time and we are rarely disappointed. Excellent diner food. Matzoh ball soup is absolutely delicious. Bagel & lox is fantastic. Love their omelettes. Love their salads. Delicious coffee. (Negative: We were disappointed with the apple pie - very mediocre.) After the recent renovation, the place looks great! Service is efficient and friendly. Nice outdoor seating when it’s pleasant weather outside.
I love the atmosphere of Viand with the crowd for brunch as it's a classic, bustling NYC diner. Expect a wait though on a Saturday and Sunday for brunch, it gets packed. It turns over pretty quickly though. They also have a counter in the back if you want to grab a spot and they have outdoor seating as well. We had salmon benedict, turkey bacon, pancakes, and waffles. All were very good for a classic diner.
We ate here 4 years ago when visiting NYC and loved it. Now, it's still a great place for any meal, and we've eaten here for all, including brunch. Tonight, we had dinner consisting of meatloaf, the turkey and quesadillas. Very large portions for not an astronomical price. The service is friendly, professional and efficient. Very highly recommend.
Great food! Nice vibe. Loved my Avocado Toast, would recommend. Waiters/waitresses we're very nice. Food came very fast. Could it better? Yes. Bathrooms are a little small along with some other things, but this is a very nice restaurant.
Good and solid diner food. Service is consistently good.
Nice enough diner if you don’t feel like making your own breakfast. Service can be hit or miss, sometimes I would like to order another coffee or beverage, but waitress usually disappears when order was taken, hangs out in coffee station on her cell phone. Great bussers on team though.
It has many elements that check the box of good neighborhood diner: well-visible location, various menu choices, homey foods that come as generous portion. Their raisin french toast is simply soul-satiating. The individual staffs are nice and sweet but somehow the system doesn't seem to work most efficiently and it takes a while to order and check out. That would be my only quibble.
A great Diner in the center of manhattan, good location and relatively close to Central Park. The service is great with waiters and cooks paying attention to you and bringing you your orders in matter of minutes. The food itself is also great, they do lack in the meat section but otherwise it’s great!
We had a good experience at Viand Cafe. We decided to keep it simple and go with an omelette, a side of eggs and a bagel. The omelette was well made and tasted really good. The side of eggs tasted fine. And finally, the bagel was fresh and toasted well. The service wasn’t great and it was a bit expensive for a diner however we did have a good meal. Four stars.
Solid breakfast, attentive and pleasant staff. I see comments about expensive, but what place is inexpensive on the upper west side? We’ll be there tomorrow for breakfast again (after a year or so away)… I’ll let you know how it goes.
My husband said we got anything we would expect from a diner: normal coffee, sandwiches, soups, entree, and pies. The blueberry pie we ordered was okay, but definitely was not what we expected for almost eight dollars. The Turkey sandwich was kind of plain, which was not what I expected from reading others recommendations. Maybe order real Turkey instead of sandwich meat next time? Overall, it was good as a diner if one wants to have a regular diner experience.
I ordered the crispy hot honey chicken sandwich. It was extremely disappointing. The sandwich was comprised of small, but thick chunks of mostly dark and some white meat. I have NEVER ordered a crispy chicken sandwich in any restaurant and was served chunks of dark meat. It has ALWAYS been white meat chicken breast. For $18.50, it came with an extremely small container of cole slaw. The price did not include fries, they were extra. The dark meat turned me off. That was one meal that left me very dissatisfied.
We asked to sit outside, but were told there was nothing available. Everyone who walked up after us got a seat outside if they wanted it, without a reservation. Not sure if it was because my thirteen year-old nephew was with me or what. Our breakfast was very good. We both ordered smoothies, and while they gave us each the same thing despite having ordered different menu items, it was delicious. The Russian coffee cake is everything you’d want it to be! Eggs and bacon on an English muffin looked great on my nephew’s plate. The waitress was excellent! I don’t think the smoothie mistake was on her. Great service and friendly conversation.
Brunch prices are absolutely ridiculous for a diner. And they charge 3.5 percent extra to pay with credit. You could get higher quality food and nicer ambiance for less money at a nearby real restaurant like a Nice Matin, or similar food with similar ambiance for a lower price at the Fairway Cafe. Very annoyed with my $70 brunch bill for two people, food and coffee only, no alcohol, no juice.
Not all diners are created equally! This one at the base of a hotel is especially expensive, with price increases across the board since 2022. Paying by credit adds 3.5%. Some of the omelette prices don’t make any sense, since it’s cheaper to build-your-own. My $20 omelette was messy but tasty. The home fries were the texture of boiled potatoes, so make sure to ask for well-done if you like a little crisp. Coffee was a burnt dark roast. Service was good. I’d go elsewhere.
We came to Viand Cafe for our New Year Brunch in north side of Manhattan. We chose to seat outside to have some fresh air, and sightseeing of people and NewYork lifestyle. It is a nice spot to have brunch. We ordered Salmon Egg Benedict, and Avocado toast. The avocado tasted fresh and I liked my salmon too, and I wish I had them on toast instead of muffin. I didn’t like my latte at all, and it felt like I am drinking milk. And one more thing that I didn’t like about was the waiter/waitress didn’t check in with us if we needed anything, but I don’t make crucial decision, they might be short staff and busy in that moment.
Café is part of the Beacon hotel and prices reflect that. If you’re a guest or tourist at the hotel, cafe is very convenient and you are right on Broadway on the Upper West Side. If you’re a local and have the time, there are better options in the area. Pros: You can sit outside and people watch. Servers were all very prompt and provided great service. Cons: the older couple that seem to be managers were quite rude to the waitress and host about placement of menus and made a big deal about it right in front of customers. They should do it elsewhere more discreetly and be nicer about it. I felt uncomfortable and asked to move outside. They also don’t post this but they charge you 3.5% for using credit card, which a lot of places are doing, but this isn’t anywhere on the menu. I had the cheeseburger 🍔 and fries which were fine. I wouldn’t come back unless I’m absolutely pressed for time and don’t have other options.
Quite expensive for the price - we got four small pieces of fish for the fish & chips, which was $28. French fries made up the bulk of dishes and were below average. However, the fish itself was tasty. The other dishes we ordered (Cuban sandwich, matzo ball soup) were similarly pricey for the quality, but the ambiance and service is good.
I just had the macaroni and cheese at Viand Café and it is seriously underwhelming. Looks exactly like Kraft macaroni and cheese, but less flavorful and less cheesy. $17 for an appetizer size. I am a New York City teacher and the macaroni and cheese served to students is far more appealing than this! Really, Viand. You can do much better.
Lunch for three at 11a (reservations not possible) on Sunday, Nov 2. We, ex- New Yorkers visiting from Seattle, arrive at 10:57a, and our 75 year old Upper West Side guest is walking, minutes away. The hostess rudely refused to seat us until she arrived. Then we were seated at a table with a wet, slippery floor, which they reluctantly dried at my request. We placed our orders, and my wife’s white wine was finally delivered after two reminders, after she finished her dish. Meanwhile, someone, seemingly a manager, warned an employee not to complain or he’ll be sent back to Mexico. The food was good, not great.
I really wanted to love this place which makes this all the harder to write. A good diner is a joy to find. The waiters were kind and that has to count for something. However everything else was poor at best. I ordered the eggs Benedict at the suggestion of my waiter. The hollandaise sauce was broken and the English muffin was burnt. The fact that someone even put this English muffin on a plate and decided to serve is an interesting choice and makes me feel like little care was put into anything. The food was forgettable even without considering those things but the fact that this meal was served to me without any quality standard is what makes writing this review compelling. I’m sad about this one, like I said, I really wanted to like it. But $36 is a lot to spend on a meal that should have never left the kitchen.
It’s just not good ever any of it. I’ve been coming for 7-8 years Worse every time. Service is not great no friendliness. They microwaved this chicken pot pie so the crust is mushy disgusting. I asked for a small green salad instead of soup they refused. Outrageous expensive. Good location. Recent remodel unfortunately did not help the pie the turkey the sandwich the shakes or the specials. My lunch with no drink is $27 dollars.
This place was okay! Really nothing special. We popped in here after my partner ran a race in Central Park and we just needed a quick bite. It’s extremely extremely expensive and it was very difficult to find something that was less than $30 (after tax and tip). However I will say that the portions are big. The food was pretty decent diner food, but nothing special at all. Definitely won’t come back here but it’s ok if you’re around and need a bite I guess, just don’t expect it to be affordable just because it’s a diner.
Too expensive, portions too large, hygiene sub par. Three items from the breakfast menu + three drinks + tips = $ 115,- ... That is waaaaay too expensive. The portions were also huge, I can imagine them having to throw half of the food out because people can't finish their plates. The place felt a tired and run down; spotty cutlery, worn plates with a grimy film, messy workstations, loose ceiling tiles. Viand Cafe could potentially be a decent diner if they would cut the portions in half (and therefore also the prices).
The service here we had no issue and the low rating is merely about the food and price. I got the salmon eggs benedict and the hollandaise sauce was like mousse and didn’t have much flavor and texture was not the best. I’m not sure if we just got a bad batch but another review raved about it so I thought it would be a lot better than what I got. My spouse got the huevos rancheros and again the flavors were lacking and looked like it was tossed together without any effort and something you whip up at home. Another table near us ordered the pancakes and those looked fluffy and yummy so maybe just the items we got were off? Also there a difference in pricing between cash and credit card which I’m not sure if the prices displayed was the cash price or cc price but I hope it was the cc price. For the price and quality, it was just not worth it.
I did not actually eat here today because the manager never gave me a table. I arrived by myself, expecting one more person. They refused to seat me while I waited, but then seated someone else by herself in a booth. The manager told me she was alone, but shortly after a person joined her. It was clear this was someone he knew and gave preferential treatment to. There is no system and it's chaos and I'm not going back even though I like to support local diners.
After attending a show at the Beacon Theater,I decided to dine at Vivand. I ordered a waffle with bacon. The waffle was cold and the butter that the waiter gave me was rock hard.I couldn’t spread it.I complained to the only waitress and she brought me softer butter from the kitchen.Don’t know why the original waiter gave me hard butter. He didn’t seem to care.Anyway the bill came to $25 for a cold waffle and 2 strips of bacon. I paid the bill and tipped $7 dollars. They will never get any of my cash again.👎🏾
Nice venue but food is mediocre at best, the BLT was more or less just a tomato sandwich, almost no bacon. I then ordered an organ juice for it to be $9 for a 330ml….. a smoothie is $12 make it make sense . When questioned the server, there answer is “ I just work here” Overprices for poor quality food and service
I can only say that the management is extremely unprofessional and lacking any sense of hospitality. We came in around 10am as a duo for coffee while we wanted to wait for the rest of the foursome to arrive. We were told to sit a table right by the front door bc ‘they needed to make money on the tables’ Needless to say, we left. RUUUDDEEEE
The male servers are so rude & have an attitude right when you walk in the door. The food is overpriced. After we were already eating, the server wanted us to move to a wooden table (we were already seated & eating at a booth). Asking to move people who are already sitting there first? Bad service. Plus just an overall attitude the entire night.
