It’s a small venue but the food was extremely good and authentic. If you are looking for a fancy restaurant or with a party vibe, this is not your place. Is intimate, homemade, and cozy.

I recently had a lovely dinner here pre-theater (New York Theatre Workshop is two doors down). While the reviews have generally been very positive, I am driven to write because some of the reviews have been quite harsh. This is a lovely small family-owned restaurant. Even if a reservation is not strictly necessary, the restaurant is so tiny that reservations can really help the owners plan for the service ahead. We started out with a shared insalata mixta. A simple salad is deceptively complex and the mixed greens and mesclun were fresh and tasty and the light dressing was properly balanced and delicious. Because of the restaurant's BYOB policy, I brought a lovely bottle of California sparking wine (Domaine Carneros) to pair with the pastas and the waitstaff took good care of the bottle and immediately brought out flutes instead of wine glasses. The bottle was kept chilled and the BYOB policy remains the biggest bargain there is for diners. I had the lobster ravioli in a pink sauce and the ravioli skins were tender and the fillings were delicious. Neither I nor my tablemates allowed any of the sauces to escape thanks to the warmed fresh bread. Prices are very reasonable and the waitstaff was solicitous and knowledgeable without being intrusive. I ordered cannolis at the end to be shared by the table with our coffees. The cannolis were separated for each member of the party and the fresh shells were filled with delicious ricotta. It was a lovely dinner and the restaurant will be a go-to resource in the area when we attend theater in that strip of E.4th Street.

I love how you defend your restaurant and employees on here. For that reason when I come back to nyc I will be going to you. The more quaint a place is the better it normally is. Keep up the great job you are doing

F

This restaurant is the essence of what NYC dining is about. Mario is a charismatic and thoughtful server. His wife, Esmerelda, cooked us the best Italian food I’ve had in the city. The restaurant is BYOB, so bring your favorite bottle of wine and enjoy. Me and my friends ordered the lobster and artichoke ravioli which was amazing. We had such a great time we stayed until they closed. Mario brought us limoncello with our desserts and at closing time every table cheered for Esmerelda when she came out from the kitchen. Will be back for soon for sure:)

Love this small restaurant. The food is full of flavor. True authentic Italian cuisine at a great price. The owners are so wonderful that they treat you like family. One of my favorite restaurants.

E

Seriously one of my favorite restaurants after living 4yrs in nyc. I almost don’t want to write this review for others to see and find out about this gem. BYOB, grandma cooking in the back which you have to pass by her to get to the bathroom. Super legit, homemade Italian food.

J
Jen Fraenkel

I love this little place! They’re right around the corner, you can bring your own wine and the dishes and delicious. They’re not fancy and they’re not trying to be, it’s just good Italian home cooking and I can’t wait to go back.

J

Highlight of our trip to NY! In town on business. Looking for a good Italian place. Wowza! This was a meal of a lifetime! The food, the service, the atmosphere, the tiramisu, our precious waiter! Mille Grazzie! May God bless this wonderful place!!!

This is my favorite Italian place in the city. The food and ambiance are both great and the owners are so cute and really do care about the customers. Please support this family run business especially while restaurants are being hit hard right now

If you have any old friends, this is the place to go. The waiter will whisper secrets in your ear while he charges you a small fee for removing your corks, it's worth it!! Be sure to visit the homely restroom, and catch a glimpse of the magic happening in the kitchen as you do.

M

Fantastico!!! Mario is a great host and Esperanza creates excellent cuisine! I have eaten alot, and I mean alot, of Italian food in my life and this is some of THE best I have ever tasted! The Bacalla Livornese was exceptional!

Food was really good, reasonably priced, and very good service. The place is very small though with a little bit of close quarters seating - so you have to be ok with that

S
Sam Mencher

Might be my favorite Italian spot in New York, fantastic food. Place is so small, but delivers one of the best dinners in the city!

N

Incredible local Italian - the owners and staff are the best and the food is always incredible. The chicken parm, bolognese and mozzarella in carrozza are our favorites!

D
Damien Fowler

The food is fantastic. I highly recommend the lobster or artichoke ravioli. Piccolo Strada is a cute little mom and pop shop, with a very personal old world feel and you can really tell they put their love into their food. The pics of Italy on the wall are from the owners personal shots. It's a fantastic place to take on a date or an intimate dinner with friends.

J
Joanne Kim

I don't usually write reviews, but my friends and I had such a great night here! The food was absolutely amazing -- you can tell that each dish is made with so much love and care. The owners are the sweetest and really made us feel so welcomed. We will definitely be visiting again soon!

H
Hannah Eilers

The BEST pasta I’ve ever had in NYC. You can tell how everything is handmade with love and it all just tastes amazing (especially the Artichoke Ravioli with Black Truffle sauce - to die for!!). Such a perfect little date night restaurant and it’s BYOB! There are heaters at every table as well which makes it a perfect outdoor dining restaurant. Definitely recommend!! My current favorite in the city

m
mayechkanyc

Cozy little place with excellent Italian food. The service was great. $5 corkage fee is a huge plus since we love wine and drink lots of it. The portions could be a little bigger though. Overall, great experience. We will be back for more!

C
Colin McCullough

I am loath to review Piccola because I don't want people to find out about it. The ambiance is great for a date (there's only like four tables in the joint, and you have to squeeze past the kitchen just to get to the bathroom) or for a small group of friends. The food is amazing, homemade Italian - just about anything on the menu is sure to impress - and the people working there are very friendly. The one time I went on a date there and we ran out of wine, the kind old man running the place came over and said, "Ah, it's an emergency!" before quickly handing us two free glasses of house wine (apparently BYO places can give wine, just not sell it). Did I mention it's BYOB? There's a modest corkage fee if you bring more than one bottle, but along with this place being BYOB, the very reasonable prices for food mean that you can eat like a king for little more than $80-100 for a couple.

a

This place is SO good!!!! It’s BYOB - the service is 5 stars, food’s great, and local owned. Owners are amazing and been here forever. Perfect for parties - you can reserve 2 hours for big groups. Enjoy :)

J
Julianne Walkiewicz

Delicious food and even better service! We had the loveliest time trying the caprese salad, pastas, and dessert - definitely recommend the cannoli. The couple who owns the restaurant make and serve the food, which makes it feel super homey and cozy. This place represents the best of what NYC dining is. Also love that it is BYOB. Their outdoor set up is also great - they have heaters and a partial enclosure, but it’s not fully closed with walls (which is safer!). Go try it!

J
Jared St Peter

We popped in on a whim needing a meal before a show, admittedly it did take a little while but every bite was worth the wait. The food is so fresh delicious. The service was so kind and friendly. It’s a super intimate atmosphere and so cute. Loved it.

R
Ric Valentino

Wonderful family-owned BYOB. Only several tables so be sure to make reservations. It’s worth it! The Ossobuco Di Manzo was fantastic. Great service and perfectly-sized portions.

R
Ronald R

Great local spot with nice concept of bring your own wine at a fee of just $5. Food was delicious especially the lobster ravioli! Would recommend and will be back for sure. Service was also good despite the large number of people there. Reservations are a must!

K
Kaitlin Butler

Excellent Super delicious food, super accommodating staff and nice touches like extra oil with the bread upon request. Good price too for tasty food. Serving size was spot on; we didn't leave hungry or overflowing. Prepare to be in a small space where the tables are snug and wafts of everything in the kitchen float through. (I liked this atmosphere, but it might not to everyone's taste.) Two of us enjoyed the gnocchi—one great review for the bolognese sauce and another for the pink sauce—while the third member of our party was similarly impressed by the rich artichoke ravioli.

L
Leah Walkiewicz

Went last week with my sister. Great outdoor space for cold NY winters with protection from wind and heaters. Fantastic service, the food is amazing, and it’s BYOB. Definitely save room for dessert, best cannolis and tiramisu I’ve ever had.

A
Audrey Akin

Truly one of the best restaurants in NYC. Have been here many times and have never had a bad dish. Chef Esperanza’s chicken Marsala is incredible, as is the chicken parm, penne a la vodka, and caesar salad. BYOB makes Piccolo Strada super affordable. Perfect for a date, family dinner, or meal with friends.

u
uluc ulgen

Honestly, it's a one-of-a-kind, no-frills type restaurant. Simple decor with brilliant dishes on plate after plate. Best of all, it's BYOB. Also the owner's daughter (who is also a highly-esteemed chef herself) was super sweet and personally checked in on me several times.

G
G van Rijn

Really nice little place with great service and lovely food. We didn’t know about the bring your own bottle concept but there was a well stocked liquor store just around the corner.

D
Dani

Wonderful experience overall! The pasta dish I ordered (whatever the pasta that’s made in house is what I ordered) was the best pasta dish I’ve had in nyc so far! The prices are extremely fair and the best part to top it all off was the insanely kind staff! Would go back time and time again. The restaurant is on the small side so definitely make a reservation beforehand if possible :)

S

Very small hole in the wall kind of place. The food is very good but way too expensive. The place is BYOB but has a $5 corkage fee.

I came here last week for my birthday and it was a truly amazing night. We rented out the room and Piccola Strada was able to make that happen. The ambiance was amazing and the food even better. I've been coming here for years and never have been disappointed. Since we had a large party size they gave us a prix fix and the food was still amazing, however I do suggest coming here with a smaller party as well to get the full range of the menu which is simply great. a rarity to still have BYOB places that serve great food but this place is it. Can't recommend it high enough! Also be sure to say hello to the owners who cook the food and serve you as well, they're the best part ;)

g
georgina spicknell

Anyone saying the food is underwhelming did not order right! CAESAR SALAD IS PHENOMENAL!!! Weird for it to be so good, so was the Zucchini. Between 2 we only paid about 60 and brought 2 bottles of wine to share, so pretty well priced for NY. Menus posted here aren’t totally correct and prices have gone up significantly (makes sense tho since postings are 6 years old). Def recommend!!!

Had the best time. We got the fried zucchini as an appetizer, and then the chicken parmigiana and the Braciolette di Manzo. Both great, I personally preferred the chicken parm which was fantastic. Our server, Willy, was so sweet and accommodating and we had a great time with him. It’s BYOB with a 5$ cork fee which is great.

We had an amazing time at Piccola Strada! We had a large party and Mario was super nice and easy to work with to get it organized. We were able to bring our favorite wines and had a great menu - passed apps, choice of entree, and cannolis! Small, cozy atmosphere with very friendly service!

Went to Piccola Strada for a girls not out and it did not disappoint!! The service was immaculate and the food even more so. We eat out in the city a lot and this is by far one of the best place I’ve tried. Dishes I recommend to try would be the lobster ravioli, artichoke ravioli and the caesar salad app. But you can’t go wrong ordering anything on the menu. We will be coming back again!

Not only is the food here exceptional, but the owners are some of the most incredible people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in NYC. Mario helped coordinate a dinner for 20 of my closest friends while Esperanza cheffed up fantastic food the entire night. Their fried zucchini, lobster ravioli, cannolis, and tiramisu are to DIE FOR. This has become a staple for my friends, family and I. It feels like eating at your grandmother’s home.

Very very small place with like 6 tables mostly for parties of 2, extra small appetizer portions. Amazing, exquisite italian food, limited selection but made on the spot. Very intimate setting, candle light and gets darker by the hour. Great place for a special date.

We recently hosed a wine tasting at Piccola Strada paired to a four-course price fixed menu. The food was delicious, the service superb, the cost extremely reasonable, and best of all, since we had this intimate restaurant virtually to our selves- the ambience was incredible. Where in NYC can you "own" a wonderful Italian restaurant for an evening?! Dining as a couple or as a larger group, I will go back to Piccola Strada time and time again. Molto Bene!!! - Davide Ganz

Good food, so/so service. BYOB helped a little. We were sat outside bc the inside tables were reserved for a large party. (I assume this is the reason we were not checked on very often). We ordered the charcuterie (nothing special, but hit the spot… wish it came with some bread). Shared the arthicoke ravioli (delicious sauce) and the osso bucco (which I definitely regret getting). Solid spot for dinner

Bring your own wine for a small uncorking free. No frills, but a good place if you're looking to host a group. We rented out the whole room and had a great time for a friend's birthday.

Showed up to this quaint, east village lofted apartment w/vintage paintings and a horizontal mirror. Talk about intimate. This cozy and toasty, (legit hot and steamy) spot only seats a total of 16 slim people. The ambiance is interesting. Lights are dim and the AC comes on occasionally. Food was AH-mazing. The entrees are small so make sure you come hungry and order a minimum of three. The price is right and you won’t be disappointed. The salt & pepper shakerz were rock solid (threw my elbow out) so don’t bother. If you’re lucky enough to sit in the window seat / by all means don’t look up because then you will get final destination vibes. You will leave smelling like pizza. Don’t go to the bathroom until the check has been paid and you know for sure that you will never be back. Next stop: The Boiler Room. (House rules for TouchTunes: no Ariana Grande)

Comically small space, we walked out smelling like the burnt oil from the kitchen, food was good , especially the artichoke ravioli , the tiramisu was super lite and fluffy might be one of the best I have ever tried (excellent ), very unique spot. $330 including a healthy tip got us 3 apps, 2 pasta's , 3 main's, 3 desert's , 3 coffees so I would say it was very well priced for NYC. BYOB.

Great space. Fine food. Chicken parm was fine.

Very small and quaint. Easy to miss walking by! Forgot it was a BYOB place, so we just had water. Bread was offered with olive oil, but no type of vinaigrette to balance it. Perhaps a regional thing? My Chicken Parmagian was tasty; wife's gnocchi was also good, but a very small portion. I've never seen her finish a pasta meal at a restaurant until tonight. Would go back if I want to bring a particular wine to the meal.

Very very (very) tiny Italian place (so tiny that you have to walk through the miniscule kitchen to get to the bathroom, and you should be prepared to leave with you clothes/hair/jacket/etc. strongly smelling like fried foods). Came here as part of a group that does wine tastings because of their $5 corkage BYO policy, which is a big plus in this city, but our tight table of 6 took up almost half of the entire restaurant. I ordered the Mozzarella In Carrozza, which was a lot of bread, very little cheese, and very dry, as well as the Carciofini Al Forno (baked artichokes hearts with parmesan cheese and olive oil), which was also dry and had almost no flavor. For my main course, I ordered the Ossobuco Di Manzo, which was a definite upgrade from the appetizers - rich, meaty, and very good. If you're looking for a neighborhood BYO spot with average food and don't mind a claustrophobic space, then head over to Piccola Strada, but definitely not a place to go out of your way to get to.

The restaurant not being on a reservation app is perhaps a great first step in the direction of authentic Italian food. The restaurant is extremely small and intimate; however, there was clearly a staff shortage which made our dinner take nearly two hours. Of course it’s not the fault of our server, but it would have been nice if they came over and checked in. The BYOB is great and the food is good—was not blown away as the comments suggested I might have been.

Very basic Italian food but does the trick. Cramped and small restaurant. BYOB.

Tiny restaurant, so if you’re looking for quiet and intimate date spot this looks like it would be but it is NOT the place. It’s busy with college students coming for BYOB (they charge a $5 corking fee) so the ambiance was loud. My biggest complaint honestly was the food though. I ordered the salmon and it was okay, but my vegetables were clearly frozen ones. If you’re going to charge me $28 I expect fresh veggies. Steaming fresh carrots cost nothing. My date ordered the lobster ravioli and said it was fishy for some reason, nothing to rave about. We both also had upset stomachs later that night so I’m wondering if it was due to the food. Diners must be too busy getting drunk here to care about the food.

I wanted to love this place, especially after hearing the heartwarming story of the chef—it's clear they pour passion into what they do. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the hype. The pasta was under-seasoned, and the sauces tasted more store-bought than homemade. The portions were small for the price, and the overall experience left me underwhelmed. I admire the effort and love behind the restaurant, but the flavors and execution just didn’t hit the mark.

We wanted to go to this restaurant and there was eight of us and they force a $60 prefix menu. If you’re more than seven people is that ridiculous? When their most expensive app plus main is $40 a person. So they gauge us for another $20? I spoke to the owner on the phone and he said it’s in case people come in and only want to drink and I said I can promise a guarantee main courses. they don’t deserve your business DONT SPEND MONEY HERE. GREEDY

Memorably bad meal here. The food tastes like it came straight out of the freezer, but somehow took super long to prepare. The shrimp appetizer was tiny and unquestionably terrible—the charcuterie bologna reminded me of Kraft. Kitchen clearly has no idea what they’re doing and no interest in learning. Avoid.

I was referred to this place, but won’t be going solely on the fact that the owner cannot take constructive criticism and likes to argue back with customers. Already left a bad taste. You don’t get far being rude like that.

This restaurant was recommended by my sister based on a recommendation she saw on line. I currently reside in Florida and came to New York where I’m originally from to visit the restaurant. My daughter and I went into Manhattan from queens. We walked into the restaurant approximately 5pm. Evidently They were full. We asked the outside waiter/server if there was any availability inside and/ or out! He was very short and rude, he said No! I proceeded to go inside, I asked him again how long was wait for a table? He yelled at me and said there was no availability at all that night. He made us feel unwelcomed and that we did not belong there! Despite the food review I will not be visiting this restaurant ever again the server was quite nasty, I will not return.

Edited*** Ok the food was just absolutely sub par. I got the penne w/ vodka sauce and I have had better vodka sauce at home and from a can. Cannolis—terrible, they tasted like they were in graham crackers. The artichokes were the only salvageable piece of the whole meal and they were still incredibly elementary—bread crumbs and butter in an artichoke baked. Oh ya and there's a $5 uncorking fee. Extremely overpriced—actually the worst Italian food I've had in this entire city.

This one of the worst meals we had in NYC. The quality, consistency, and flavors of the food were awful, the service was poor for new york, price was way too high compared to the quality of food and ambience, no restrooms, and leaving the restaurant my whole clothes and hair smelled. Even other guests left immediately after having one bite of their food. PLEASE DONT EAT HERE
