Què diuen els clients de SANUKI UDON
Sanuki Udon offers affordable, tasty udon and tempura in a casual, cafeteria-style setting popular with NYU students. Many praise the chewy noodles and self-serve tempura, but some find the quality inconsistent compared to authentic Japanese udon. A few report issues with food quality.

Opinions de SANUKI UDON New York
I stopped by Sanuki Udon and tried the shrimp tempura, beef and rice, and beef udon. The noodles had a nice texture, and the broth had good flavor. The shrimp tempura was crispy, and the beef was tender and tasty. I also got the chicken onigiri, which was really good. The prices here are great, you can get a lot of food for under $50. It’s a popular spot for college students since it’s close to campus. It can get busy, but the service is fast, so you don’t wait long for your food. It’s a solid place to grab a meal alone or with friends.
The food is really good and it’s not expensive. The staff is helpful and kind. The place is quite quiet and the food comes out in less than a minute.
The staff were all very friendly. Answered my questions with a smile. The atmosphere is very quaint. Not too loud or too quiet. The lighting is very nice as well. The food is very good. Not too salty & very filling.
Walked in on a fall Sunday at 6 PM to lots of empty seats but it filled up quickly. Meat to be a quick stop so I think most people are in and out within 30-45 mins. Chill and affordable spot for solo diners and small groups of 2-4 people. Popular with university students and younger crowds. You can order your bowl at the counter and pick tempura too. After paying, you can mix up your own tempura dipping broth, add noodle toppings, grab utensils and napkins, and get oolong tea or water. The bowls are really filling.
Insanely good udon at a reasonable price and fast service. I got the tonkotsu broth with added spice, which was fragrant and smooth. The chashu was thick and chewy, absorbing a lot of the broth. Noodles had a lovely consistency. I added the shrimp tempura which was excellent, very crispy. Free oolong tea! Around $18 total.
NYC's First Udon Station is set up conveniently with an actual tray line — grab your tray, order your entrée, pick your tempura, and you’ll be slurping in minutes! They serve udon made with Japanese-imported flour and cook the noodles with soft water for that perfect, chewy bite. The Tonkotsu, Mentaiko Cheese, and Pork Katsu Curry Udon are all hits — flavorful, satisfying, and super affordable. Honestly, it’s hard to pick a favorite because they’re all that good. But the Mentaiko Cheese Udon? An absolute must-try! And don’t skip the mochi — you’ll thank me later. Bonus: FREE Oolong tea! Flavorful, fast, and officially one of my new favorite udon spots in NYC. Absolutely! Here is a food blogger-style post for the udon restaurant: Noodle lovers, you have to see this! I just found the ultimate spot for a quick and delicious meal: Sanuki Udon. This place is a game-changer with its brilliant cafeteria-style service. You simply grab a tray, choose your freshly made udon bowl, and then slide down the line to pick from a tempting array of tempura and toppings. The noodles are perfectly chewy and the broth is pure, simple comfort in a bowl. It’s fast, incredibly satisfying, and proves that amazing food doesn’t need to be complicated. This is my new go-to for a perfect, no-fuss lunch!
Really good udon. I got the beef udon. I recommend it. I didn't come during peak hours so it wasn't crowded. I got my udon extremely quickly.
Quick yummy Japanese Udon noodles with plenty of side dishes to choose from. The restaurant is located in the New York University area so the place is full of students. And that what make it so good in price and size! I saw a bowl of noodle other people were having and knew I wouldn't be able to eat more than just a bowl of noodle. I had a bowl of mapo tufu Udon with soup and really enjoyed it!
Not as good or authentic as what I actually got in Japan but a lot better then many other restaurants. The Kitsune Udon was very nice. The best part was the noodles but I also enjoyed the tofu. They also have a buffet of items that have been stuck in tempura batter but I hate seeing things left out. Fresh tempura is always better. As a tea geek I also appreciate their nod to Japanese society with free tea. Not the best tea but still free.
I was intrigued to try this place marketed as a self serve udon bar. I'm not sure if we came at a bad time, but the experience was a bit odd. At the station where you order your udon, a staff member said to please give them some time, about 10 minutes. Totally understandable, it looked like they were fulfilling a lot of orders. We stood there for some time but I honestly do not remember how long. It looked like they had the option to take your order, circle it on a erasable card with a number and bring it to you when they were ready but this option was not offered. We just stood in line waiting and a line was building up behind us. Once they were ready to take our orders, the bowl of udon was assembled quickly. You then go down the line to pick up some tempura if you want. After you pay, there is a self serve station on the side with additional toppings for your udon (tempura flakes, green onions), you can make your own tempura dipping sauce, sauces for katsu, pitchers of hot oolong tea or ice water and plenty of containers and bags for you to take your leftovers home and utensils. I really liked the self serve station. The food in my opinion was just okay. I had the beef udon and the broth was just okay, and the beef that it was topped with did not have a great texture but the texture of the udon was great. I wasn't expecting top of the line flavors but the broth and toppings fell a bit short when comparing to places in similar price ranges like Udon West and dare I say Kenka. The tempura was pretty good. If you are in the area and want a quick lunch, it's definitely an option but I'm not sure if this would be my go to spot for casual udon.
The food was a bit disappointing. I love Sanuki udon and Japanese-style tempura, but the udon wasn’t warm and the tempura had no heat at all. The staff, however, were friendly and helpful. Other than the lower price compared to NYC spots that make fresh noodles, nothing really stood out. Since it’s right by the school, it seems like a convenient place for students to grab a quick meal or chat with friends, but not somewhere I would go out of my way to visit.
We visited Sanuki Udon on a Saturday night. Service was quick and efficient and their customer service gets the job done. We ordered the beef udon, shrimp tempura, white rice, and chicken karaage. The udon in our case was very oily. Udon soup is known to be light and something nice to sip on. However, I had to keep wiping my mouth because of how oily it is. Noodle texture is great and it’s an alright portion size. Beef is very fatty and not of great texture or flavor. Overall, we paid $50, drinks included, which I thought was a bit too pricey, considering it’s supposed to be a quick place to eat. Overall, this is a fast-food udon spot and the quality of the food reflects that. Not sure I’d go out of my way to get here but definitely not a to-go spot.
This place was alright, I would not say it is the best udon in ny or even close to it. However it is something that can get you by if you are craving udon and near the NYU Washington square area. It’s kind of a food bar style service, where you choose what you want. The fried selection was fresh however I got a rice dish which was underwhelming.
Great concept: casual+straight forward fare. Housemade udon, which are genuinely excellent as chewy & thick. You can request vegetarian broth. You can see & then choose from tempura options. You can help yourself to oolong tea or water. You can make your own tempura sauce. Clean & efficient dining areas. Professional+kind staff. Downside: - the tempura I chose happened to be more soft than crispy. this is a big deal to me since alternatively I feel I could go to Raku for good udon & made-to-order crispy tempura :\ or even save my craving for the tempura spot in Mitsuwa, yes across the Hudson River in NJ - things get pricey quickly. I went with the most affordable option at $9.50 and chose 3 vegetarian tempuras: $1.85 chrysanthemum garland, $1.85 Japanese squash, $2.95 soft-boiled egg. Came out to $16.15. +3% card surcharge +tax, ~$18. Then there’s a screen for suggested tip & I went with 15% (regardless it’s not formal dining, the place felt well-maintained with cleanliness & tray cleaning. maybe 15% can be a stretch.). Total came to $20.52. Now, the part that can’t be confirmed with proof: I chose to do a 1hr walk home and had moments of suddenly bad #2 anxiety (not the good #2). To the point where I didn’t have enough time to scope out an emergency situation. I hadn’t eaten anything else that day to trigger this reaction, so unfortunately this meal was the source :\. As with undercooked eggs, consumption is alllllways a disclosed risk. I think I got unlucky with mine, and maybe unlucky with the heat lamp duration, because I take pride in my stomach of steel. Which ended up as a stomach of goo that night… Honestly, this wasn’t a total dealbreaker since I’m still more sad about the soft tempuras & pricepoint, lol… I really wanted to love the place+eagerly return. I get it, though. The place is in the heart of NYU, where the area is teeming with affluent students that can pay with student currency card. The business knows thy demographic. Ymmv!
I really wanted to like Sanuki Udon, but honestly, it felt like a weaker version of Marugame Seimen. The effort is there — they offer free tea and keep prices affordable, which is great, especially for NYU students. That said, the quality of the udon is far from what you’d find in Japan. The noodles lacked texture and depth, and the toppings felt off — I’ve never seen udon with katsuobushi (bonito flakes) on top back home. There’s potential here, and I do appreciate what they’re trying to do, but overall, it still has a long way to go. I really hope they can improve and capture the real taste of authentic Sanuki udon someday.
The food was mediocre at most. Came here for the first time and was hoping for something good. It’s a self-serving restaurant. I’m not sure if the person in the front speaking English or not, because after I gave her my order for the noodles, she looked at me and asked me to point out the one I just ordered on the menu with pictures. That was weird. The texture of the udon was nice and chewy. The flavor of the curry was nice, but I think they put too much starch in it, and it was too gluey. The pork katsu looked burnt and it was extremely tough and dry. You can see the muscle fibers in the photos. I also got a bunch of tempura. I got shrimps, chicken karaage, and a fried soft boiled egg. The fried chicken was also extremely dry. You can also see the layers on the inside, and that makes me wonder if it’s real chicken pieces. The shrimp was average. Probably the only item that didn’t disappoint. However, it wasn’t a compliment. You basically got what you ordered, and that’s expected. The fried soft boiled egg was alright. It was still runny on the inside. Overall, it was an okay meal. Great for students who are on a budget. Don’t bother traveling here to eat. In addition, I saw one of the noodle making workers using his phone at the site using the same hands with the same gloves that he wore to both MAKING the noodles AND CLEANING. Well, we all know how dirty our phones are, right?
As an Asian I don’t like it. The curry tastes too sweet and the dumplings is not dry and the skin is thick. Apart from that, they use chicken breast for the fried chicken. Maybe American likes it but Asian don’t. It is not authentic.
THEY WILL SERVE YOU RAW CHICKEN, and tell you that’s how chicken is served. I am currently suffering from food poisoning. Also, DO NOT TRUST OTHER REVIEWS. The reason for high rating is because they give you free drink for 5-star review. I got kara age, and from first bite, I noticed the chicken was undercooked, almost raw. And I took a bite from another piece, which was as raw as a live chicken. I asked them to cook it further, and they claimed “cooked chicken leg looks pink.” Three other friends dining with me agreed that this is nothing but a raw piece of chicken, just like how anyone with a common sense would. I went back to the counter, where they informed me once more, that cooked chicken leg is supposed to look pink. However, this time, they offered me a new piece saying “We will give you new one, but it will look exactly the same,” dismissing my concern as if I just wanted some more nasty raw chicken of theirs. Of course I rejected it, because more of those health hazard was the last thing I needed. I have been a loyal customer since they opened last year, visiting at least twice a week. I’m so grateful of their way of honoring my royalty, trying to send me to heaven 😇 I also thank the owner, fellow stern alum, for this opportunity to spend my precious long weekend in bathroom.
