Opinions de Shanghai Chinese Restaurant New York
Had dinner at Shanghai Dumplings the other night for the first time. The soup dumplings were fantastic so was the service! We'll definitely be dinning here again.
Great food. I’m impressed with Peking duck— interesting enough considering this is a Shanghai Fusion. The duck was very made with authentic wrap and sauce. Highly recommend. Shanghai noodles are very authentic too. The wrap of xiaolongbao is a bit thicker than I’d like but the filling is juicy and yummy!
Stumbled across this restaurant and the staff were so nice and the dumplings and food excellent. I tried something new that I’ve never had before - the crispy coconut balls and they were so light and fresh.
Wonderful restaurant! I stopped by for lunch. I had the rainbow dumplings (a sample platter of each dumpling) as well as the beef scallion pancake. The food was 10/10. The service was phenomenal. I will be back, hopefully with friends.
Soup dumplings here are good and flavorful. The crab & pork soup dumplings don't have a strong crab flavor but were still delicious and were my favorite. Warning that the soup dumpling skin is sticky & fragile so it tears easily. The other standout was the scallion pancakes, they were incredibly crispy and the sauce that comes with it is great.
Really great spot. Good food and really nice service. My family ordered several dishes which we shared and they all were amazing.
This was the best food I’ve had in New York so far. The braised beef soup was flavourful and the beef melted in your mouth. The pork soup dumplings were a good large size and absolutely to die for. I wouldn’t recommend the wings if you’re looking for more American style but everything was super delicious. The server was so polite as well
As an Asian American who grew up eating a lot of Chinese food, I often wish UWS had more solid Asian food options. This is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood! I really liked the soup dumplings and the pork chop noodles with scallion oil. The pork chop was fried very nicely. Excited to keep coming back.
Walked in here off the street and it was the best decision I made this weekend. The chicken soup dumplings are SO good and so are the scallion pancakes. The crispy shrimp are fine but they are served skin on which I do not like.
For New York, the service was REALLY GOOD ! The woman that was serving was really nice and understandable! I took the fried rice and it was delicious too (the picture is linked down, don't mind the fork ahah) ; I definitely recommend it. Thank you so much !!!
This restaurant was a delightful surprise! The Shanghai dumplings and the sweet and sour pork are absolutely delicious. Staff is very polite and kind. I will definitely come back!

I travelled often to Shanghai for work and always sought out soup dumplings. I am happy to have Shanghai dumplings in my neighborhood. For New Year’s, I ordered Peking duck for the first time and it did not disappoint. I used to order from another spot in the neighborhood; and this was of great quality and more value. The pancakes were super thin which is how they should be. I sense they do a great takeout business. The interior is as you would find in China. I hope more people decide to eat in. The staff is very friendly.
As this restaurant recently opened in my neighborhood, i was excited to try it! I had no expectations but if I did, they absolutely would have been exceeded. I brought some friends and we were immediately seated. We shared a few dishes and got complimentary orange chicken as part of a special promotion, the food came incredibly fast and was so delicious. The staff was incredibly kind and courteous. I firmly believe that if anyone gives this restaurant a bad review, they're crazy! the soup dumplings were incredible, i got all of my favorite chinese dishes and they were some of the best ive ever had. I will definitely be going back!!!!!

The restaurant itself is tiny and I bet it can be noisy, but our dinner was very good. We did take out, so service was not really a part of our experience. Particularly enjoyed the soup dumplings and the Mongolian beef. The rice was unusual good too, which is a surprising thing for me to point out. But rice in Chinese restaurants is often precooked and reheated. Clearly not here.

Shanghai Soup Dumplings + the Spicy Crispy Chicken were really good. I got the rainbow soup dumplings and definitely think the shanghai dumplings are the only one worth getting Place seemed newly opened, yet was a bit dirty. (I found myself having to wipe off some of the silverware). Could have been an off-day. Food came out really quick and we ate it up! Though… my side of white rice was the driest rice I’ve ever had.
We were intrigued by 4.6 start rating and we got fooled by it. The place was empty when we got here on Saturday afternoon. The food was so so and the service was bad. The waiter kept serving us in filthy gloves which felt uncomfortable. We will not be back here.

The food was good and I’d consider coming back, but the service was lacking. I’m not sure if the person serving us was the owner or another staff member, but with only about five tables seated, he spent most of the time watching all of us. It felt intrusive, as if we had very little privacy while eating. When taking our order, he leaned over us and seemed confused, likely due to limited English skills. That in itself isn’t a problem, but it made the interaction awkward. He was also wearing a “Get a COVID-19 vaccine” shirt, which felt unprofessional given the setting and the price point of roughly $60–$80 for two people. The food came out in an odd sequence as well: my guest’s dish arrived about five minutes before mine, and the dumplings came two minutes after that. Ideally, appetizers should come first, and the main dishes should arrive together.
This place is definitely a bit of a mixed bag. Great service, the beef noodle soup is a must and one of the better renditions of this dish (5/5 for this dish alone). Skip the chicken wings and soup dumplings as there's better versions of both to be had nearby. - Cucumber salad: a bit too salty but freshly prepared and well seasoned - 4/5 score - Chicken wings: this was a confusing dish for us...the batter was really thick (almost like the kind you'd see on fish and chips but even denser). It's meant to be dipped in a spicy sauce that accompanies it. This was not to our palette and not what we were expecting at all - 1/5 score - chicken soup dumplings: the skin was really thick and the dough was quite chewy while the filling was too salty for our liking - 3/5 score - Beef brisket noodles with soup: this dish was amazing! Had we only ordered this, it would have been an amazing experience. Broth was rich and you could tell it was cooked for a long time. Beef was super tender. Noodles were perfectly chewy and the dish was expertly seasoned - 5/5 score Service is good and it's a no frills type of Chinese restaurant. I think it's one of those places where you need to know what to get you can have a very good experience.
I was so excited to try this new addition to the neighborhood, but it really was not a very good experience. Beef was chewy, Peking duck was dry, the seafood noodles were really terrible and everything was covered with a thick salty brown sauce. Also our waitress kept forgetting our drinks. At the end of service, she realized this and rushed to make and bring over the lemonade and bubble tea we ordered, even though we told her we no longer wanted them. I thought this meant she was going to offer them on the house but they still charged us for them!
We ordered the spicy pork soup dumplings expecting savory, gingery goodness. What was served was… fruity broth? Like pork met sangria and nobody intervened. Perhaps fermentation, perhaps an overenthusiastic pour of Shaoxing wine—either way, deeply unsettling. The chicken soup dumplings were fine. No notes. They understood the assignment. The Kong Pao chicken, however, arrived suspiciously fast—not “efficient kitchen” fast, but “this was already waiting for us” fast. Less than five minutes after ordering. The kind of speed that makes you pause mid-conversation and say, “Is that… ours?” Texture-wise, the chicken was chewy in a way that suggests it had lived a previous life. Not fresh, not tender—just sort of there, existing. Then, in a final act of chaos, the soup dumplings arrived after the chicken. Because nothing says culinary confidence like serving soup dumplings as an encore. Overall: one dish was fine, one was baffling, and one tasted like a mistake no one wanted to acknowledge. I wanted to like this place. The food made it difficult.

Everything felt weird! The waitress had poor memories of what five dishes we wanted to order. She also never place the food on our table, I had take it from her and do it for us. And she never took our finished dishes away. We asked how much lemonades were, and she almost placed an order for us. Soup dumplings were good, but we waited for a loooong time. I ordered the soup dumpling when we sat down, but came to our table when everything was done. I had to asked twice when will be ready. There’s no tables she was serving, only us. All of us thought it was a weird dinning experience. I don’t think I would come back again.
The golden crispy shrimp was anything but crispy. It should be called golden soggy shrimp. As for my coke, when they served it the can was crushed. I never seen any restaurant do that before. Maybe they think it's like orange juice. Freshly squeezed? We also put a order in for soup dumplings. It never came out. Apparently, no soup for you.
There were 5 people in our group, and 4 people ordered drinks. They got 3 of our drink orders COMPLETELY different, and it’s not like they got us confused with another group because there was no one else there. After we got the drinks, I wanted to request an exchange for one of the drinks because it tasted terrible, and was not what I ordered at all. Since there was only ONE waitress in the whole restaurant, we had to WAIT until she came outside to ask for it. (Also we were the only customers there, so it’s not like they were busy) When I asked for it to be replaced, the waitress’s solution was to SWAP DRINKS with someone in my group, saying that we were all friends. She had already drunk the drink halfway through, and they had the audacity to tell me to switch with her instead of making a new one. I did end up getting the drink, though. However, it gets worse. I had ordered a dish earlier, and all of our food had came, so I just assumed it takes a long time—-but then the waitress brought the check to us. I politely asked for the dish I ordered (keep in mind we arrived here ONE HOUR AGO and was waiting for that singular dish FOR SUCH A LONG TIME.) The waitress was shocked, saying “oh they didn’t bring it out yet?” And said it would take a few more minutes. This was the last straw for me. I wanted to leave immediately. Plus, a fly or mosquito was surrounding us the WHOLE MEAL. It was also so hard to get the waitress’s attention because there was no one out here. The food was also mid and a bit overpriced for its quality and how it tasted. The soup dumplings were TERRIBLE AND DISGUSTING.
