Just what we were looking for. Stopped in for a late lunch, friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. Pork fries appetizer was very good and large enough to be a meal. Burger was good, very tall with the frizzled onions. Was a bit like the twilight zone customer wise, customer wanted a beer but couldn't choose just reapeating "one". Another customer look what seemed like 5 minutes to remember they loved the chili. Crayons and paper on nearly every table. Fun place
ToJ is my go-to restaurant in the West Village. There is usually a table available, food is good and service great. My husband and I had our celebration after our engagement here and the staff was fantastic. This will always be a special place for us and we look forward to visiting for years to come!
We come to the city every six months for medical services. A friend recommended this place and we LOVE it!! We came in Tuesday night, and even though it was busy we were seated within 10 minutes by the darling blond woman at front the door. Didn't get her name but she ran that place like it was her own. Michael was our awesome, friendly server. We loved the half chicken with scallop potatoes and spinach. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this classic Village treasure. Who knew we would be looking forward to more medical appointments, we will definitely be back!
Excellent food with a very diverse menu (burgers, sandwiches, tacos, pasta, steak). Usually pretty easy to get a table. Great local neighborhood style atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Did not have to wait long to be served, choices of food and drinks were excellent.
Do I feel stupid. For decades I lived one neighborhood away from this gem of an eatery. Must have walked past it 100s of times and I never stopped to notice it. I’ve been temporarily staying a few blocks away and decided to give it a try with some out of town friends. WOW, what a fantastic neighborhood experience. The menu is perfect. Amazing comfort food with something for everyone. The service was great and even though we weren’t regulars, they did their best to find us a table on a very busy Friday night. The vibe of the entire place a very friendly. Surrounding tables happy to make suggestions and guide you to their favorites. The oysters were fresh, the seafood chowder, hearty and light at the same time. The flaky chicken pot pie was a enough for 4:people and the fish & chips were delicious and greaseless. I could go on but you get the idea. I could kick myself for all the years I could have been enjoying this pub in the hood if I had only opened my eyes. Time to make up for lost time. NORM!!!!!
This place is FANTASTIC! Recently, a group of us came in without a reservation and the LOVELY hostess bent over backwards to accommodate us, even moving around some barstools so we could sit while we waited. It was TOTALLY worth the wait! Food was delicious and service was amazing! Absolutely LOVE the old-school atmosphere. Hands down, BEST place in the West Village...I hope it stays forever!
Stopped by just for a quick beer, had no expectations and now I love this cozy bar, a lot of the food looked great but we only got beers, bartender is a gem as well as the atmosphere. 5/5 recommend.
Tavern on Jane, tucked away in the vibrant West Village, offers a quintessential neighborhood pub experience with a touch of culinary excellence. Among its many highlights, the wings at Tavern on Jane are simply unbeatable, earning it a well-deserved five-star rating. **Ambiance and Decor**: The moment you walk into Tavern on Jane, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The rustic wooden decor, cozy booths, and friendly chatter create a comfortable, laid-back vibe. The dim lighting and classic pub memorabilia adorning the walls add to the charm, making it a perfect spot for a casual night out or a relaxed meal with friends. **Service Experience**: The staff at Tavern on Jane exemplifies genuine hospitality. Attentive, friendly, and always ready with a recommendation, they enhance the overall dining experience. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’re made to feel right at home. **Food and Drinks**: Tavern on Jane’s menu offers a variety of hearty, well-executed dishes, but the true star of the show is the wings. Here’s what I recommend: **Appetizers**: - **Buffalo Wings**: These wings are nothing short of spectacular. Perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and coated in a tangy, spicy buffalo sauce that hits all the right notes. Served with a side of creamy blue cheese dressing, they are an absolute must-try. - **Jane’s Nachos**: A generous pile of tortilla chips topped with melted cheese, jalapeños, salsa, and sour cream. Perfect for sharing and a great start to your meal. **Main Courses**: - **Jane Burger**: A juicy, flavorful burger served with all the classic toppings and a side of crispy fries. The patty is cooked to perfection and the brioche bun adds a nice touch. - **Fish and Chips**: Golden-brown and crispy battered fish served with a side of thick-cut fries and tangy tartar sauce. A classic pub dish done right. **Desserts**: - **Apple Crisp**: Warm, spiced apples with a crumbly topping, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Comforting and delicious. - **Chocolate Brownie Sundae**: Rich, fudgy brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. An indulgent treat to end your meal. **Drinks**: - **Craft Beer Selection**: Tavern on Jane boasts an impressive selection of craft beers on tap, featuring both local brews and international favorites. The rotating selection ensures there’s always something new to try. - **Cocktails**: The pub’s cocktails are well-crafted and perfectly balanced. The Classic Old Fashioned and the refreshing Jane’s Mule are particularly noteworthy. **Overall Impression**: Tavern on Jane captures the essence of a great neighborhood pub with its welcoming atmosphere, exceptional service, and standout dishes. The wings alone are worth the visit, but the entire menu offers something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty meal, a casual drink, or a place to unwind, Tavern on Jane delivers an experience that is both memorable and satisfying. **Rating**: ★★★★★ For a true taste of the West Village’s hospitality and some of the best wings in the city, look no further than Tavern on Jane. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike!
The place is tasty, friendly, authentic and with a very caring service. We loved it!!
My visit here really surprised me. It looks like a dive bar (and definitely has that vibe if you sit at the bar), but the food is SO good. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, entrees, and sides, and were extremely stuffed but kept eating because it was so good. I'm rarely impressed by how restaurants do brussels and these were perfect. They also served up some of the best risotto I've ever had. We had to wait a bit since we walked in, but I'm very glad we did and would recommend you do the same.
I used to live down the street from here when it opened in 1995. I remember coming here during the first month it opened and loved it from the beginning. When visiting friends in this neighborhood, I always try to hit-up up this place. The risotto is definitely one of my favorite dishes. The Charleston burger is really good too! Service has always been great here. It's always felt like a close neighborhood place.
Loved this spot during my visit to NYC. It's a nice tavern/gastropub in my opinion. The food is delicious. Prices aren't too crazy, neighborhood vibe and great classic cocktails. I had the pork chop (special) and a Manhattan
All around great food, great service. The oysters were very good.
Service is always great, the food is solid - some of the best wings around (if you know of better ones, I’m all ears). I always have a hard time deciding what to order because I want several things. And the crayons are a fun touch.
It is nice to have a a bar and Eatery with a solid neighborhood feel in the West Village a nice variety of food. Something for everybody. Friendly staff and friendly crowd
The restaurant transported me to Ireland! Such positive and friendly vibes, the staff was wonderful. My friends and I ordered a bunch of apps and shared, we had a great experience!
Excellent local pub! With food way above what you would expect with a good beer and wine selection, it's more elevated than bar food. They don't try to do anything more than make it good, however, so you can count on true renditions of all of the favorites from chicken wings to mozzeralla balls. The rest of the menu is also good. A lively atmosphere and good service round out a great experience when this is the vibe.
I had the most bizarre request on grubhub for the staff to write the weirdest note on my delivery. They nailed it. It made my whole weekend. Food was stellar. Y’all have a fantastic staff there! Thank you for appeasing my out there request! This bar rocks and the food is great!
A very pleasant surprise of a restaurant. We intended to go to a nearby restaurant but couldn't get a table. We went for a walk and saw Tavern on Jane and weren't expecting a lot despite the fact that it's a very nice looking restaurant. Well we had brunch and it was sincerely an excellent meal. A top notch burger and one of the best bowls of chili I have ever had. This is a great restaurant.
A wonderful place found while walking the neighborhood and in need of a pint. John the bartender was a delight and made our trip to NYC. Everyone was so friendly and sitting at the bar gave us an experience we will never forget. You'll be lucky to visit this little gem in heart of a historic neighborhood.
Can’t recommend this place enough! Really cozy atmosphere and the food was incredible. We tried two different burgers, buffalo chicken wrap and steak sandwich — everything was great. Kristin was so kind and always checked in on us. 10/10!
This is a local joint that is loaded with charm and character. I showed up as a single for dinner and they could not have treated me any better. My server was friendly, professional, and very competent. The bartender not only serves great cocktails, but he friendly and affable. I enjoyed the excellent oysters and a burger. The food is OK, but it's the setting that makes this place special.
Who knew an Irish Pub can not only quench your thirst but, fill your belly with some deliciousness. Tavern on Jane has a delightful ambiance, a nice selection of draft bears as well as bottled. A very reasonably priced and filling brunch with treats and drinks. And more importantly, service with a smile. Yes. Go.
Stumbled in on a frigid day for the Bournemouth match and had a fantastic time chatting with fellow fans! Cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Came to this classic West Village tavern to celebrate a birthday. Jane Street was closed to traffic. Sitting outside on a brisk summer evening, while the lovely staff brings tasty food and beverages felt wonderful, almost decent. The food was delicious! Like super delicious - pasta and burgers and oysters and cocktails. Love this quiet slice of West Village life at a decent price. Definitely coming back soon
Craving wings today, so I tried this local spot that I have passed hundreds of times. It is the perfect example of a neighborhood pub with friendly relaxed service and an old school vibe. The reason for the 5 stars is that the wings were absolutely spot on: good crunch, well sauced, clean oil, and high quality plump and tender chicken. Much better than other places in the hood that specialize in wings...I want to try more of the menu when I definitely return, but I may never stray from those wings.
I bumped into this tavern randomly and I was welcomed warmly. The tavern offers a great menu card and a broaden variety of drinks, meeting everkybody's tastes and expectations! The burger I had was more than tasteful, the staff was very attentive, warm hearted and friendly, especially Oscar who even took some time to recommend me food and drinks and with whom I had a lovely chat. If in the West Village, this is the place to need to be!
I was visiting for Christmas and had read on a reddit thread that they are a great place to watch the Bournemouth matches. Turned out to be an awesome place! Great food and wonderful, friendly staff and owner!! I had a an amazing time celebrating with the locals. The French onion soup was perfect for such cold, gloomy day. Will definitely stop back in next time I'm visiting!
We popped in for a late afternoon drink and sat at the bar. There was a great atmosphere and the bar tender David was very welcoming. I could have spent a lot longer here. I had a fab glass of NZ Sauvignon blanc. Would definitely come back!
Been going here yearly on Christmas Eve my whole life- literally. Wings are extremely reliable, tasty, and well-cooked. Their burgers are great. Love the salmon. Overall great place.
Tip top atmosphere with a smattering of jolly silver haired socialites. The decor and coziness make me feel like I’m stepping back in town to the romantic Manhattan of old. My personal order: martini appetizer, beer and wings. Their original buffalo bone-in wings are perfectly crispy, juicy, and saucy. I could eat them every day.
We were just looking for a quick place to get dinner on one of the more crowded nights in the city since the pandemic and were surprised to discover this great gastro pub. Their burgers are great, although all came not in the right cooking level (medium came as medium well and medium well came as very well done). All in all the burgers were good. We also had the tacos, which was a very generous portion. Great place!
The Tavern is a cozy bar with tables across two back dining rooms. Our food is good to very good; a Jane Street Burger ($24) and a Cobb Salad, small ($17). We had plenty of food for us two. We drank a Rittenhouse Manhattan ($18) and Vermentino ($13 glass). The cocktail was very good. Our service was pleasant. We'll keep this on our list of places to eat when we're in the neighborhood. SHOUT OUT to Mackenzie S. for pleasant service. TIP The location convenient is to the Whitney Museum of American Art and 6 major subway lines.
Stopped here with some friends before taking in the Mile Long Opera on the High Line and it was a perfect spot. We arrived early for dinner (5-ish) so four of us had no problem getting seated. Nice selection of beer and wine and a really great menu. We had a really nice, relaxed meal with just the right amount of attention. The food was excellent. Two of us had the special burger and they were delicious. Juicy, tasty and cooked just right. Another in our party had the chili and while he said it was more like soup, he really enjoyed it. Said it was up there among the best he's had. Chunks of meat, not ground up, which is always nice. Looking forward to coming again!
Friendly neighborhood tavern ! Great food and service . Perfect for Sunday brunch or watching a game at the bar ! For the record, their home fries are some of the best in NYC!
Great burgers cooked to order. Cool spot, weeknight locals vibe - standard fare, tables with paper tablecloths and crayons type of place. Very family friendly wear village spot.
This place feels like you stepped back in time to the old West Village. It seems to be filled with locals and has a Cheers like atmosphere with a bustling bar and TVs. The menu has lots of comforting food choices, nothing too hip. We just had the grilled wings which I wanted to love because someone really raved about them. They were pretty average. But I liked this place and would go there again if only to take a step back in time.
Went to lunch. Looked great online. Took about 10 min to get our drink order in. I think the guy was bartending and serving, it was busy. I work in the hospitality industry and if I would change anything, I'd let people know ahead of time the kitchen is backed up. Then I'm assuming the mgr came out and he sped things up. Great lunch, great place. I can see why people fancy this sweet little tavern!
Honestly an overall great experience, can be a little bit busy/packed but the food is usually solid. I've had the burger and enjoyed it, and loooove the mozzarella balls. The rest of their appetizers were okay, but the mozzarella balls steal the show. Food wise I've tried a few things - the Mac and cheese is a bit soupier than you might expect but wonderful flavor, the fish and chips was delightful and as I mentioned I've enjoyed their burgers before. Overall a very solid experience, even if certain things are just okaaay (to be clear, haven't had anything I was like "oh this is bad").
I went on maps to see a local spot with cheap finger food and found Tavern on Jane. I arrived and that's not at all what this place is. Imagine a bar tryna be bougie. The prices on the menu had me considering if I should leave. But I was hungry so I got me some Mussels and a Chile Burger. That was amazing! I still believe it was over priced as my burger alone was $20 but I enjoyed my food nonetheless. I recommend if you looking to spend. I don't know if I'd go back but I definitely loved the food. (It was Post COVID so that could also be why prices were high.)
Found this spot on a random walk. The staff was very friendly. The Mozarrella cheese balls and brussels were good. The pork chops were mid. My boyfriend and I played tic tac toe on the table since there was crayons, wasn’t sure if we could or not lol but overall it was a nice find ☺️
Everything is nice & high quality. Nothing super special but a pleasant upscale local's pub
Good drink selection. Kitchen closes at 10:30
The food was average, service above average, and the atmosphere was great if you love quaint, candlelit restaurant bars. It was super cozy. The paper and crayons on the table were a great touch, and it was a lot of fun to doodle and play some games while waiting for food and after dinner. The pricing here was also reasonable for the city. They had $14-16 wine and cocktail options. Entrees were in the $20s. It looked like quite a few people were there on a first date, and it looked great for that as well!
Wonderful ambiance and delicious food. My best friend bought me here for my birthday dinner and I am must say I was impressed!! First the food was good size portions. When we ran into a issue with an order our Server Mark Davis rectified it swiftly and with a high level of professionalism. Throughout the time of our mean he and the staff busied themselves checking in on all the patrons to ensure we were all pleased. I would like to congratulate the management of this establishment and the staff for the well oil machine that is their operation. A shout out to our server Mark Davis for his exemplary service !! Well done team! I will definitely be back !!
I came here for dinner around 8:20pm on a seasonably cold but dry Thursday evening in late February. I came here alone to grab dinner at the bar after finding no availability at many other establishments nearby. Luckily there was one small bar stool available for me. The bar area of the restaurant was quite lively and crowded; however, there appeared to be available tables in the dining area of the restaurant. I have been to this restaurant several times over the past 10 years for a meal and/or a drink. The restaurant and the people who work here seem intentionally low key and casual in a friendly way. The menu is pretty standard American cuisine and the decor of the restaurant feels like going back in time to an older era of New York (in a good way). I ordered the Jane Street Burger and the frizzled onions came out room temperature and their texture seemed as though they had been left out for a while. I nicely asked to have the burger replaced and they apologized and brought out a new burger. Once corrected, I enjoyed the burger and fries. I had two drinks with my meal. The single bartender was very busy but she had a fine attitude and was clearly working hard. With tip, my meal came to about $80 which seems like a lot for stale frizzled onions. I probably should give this restaurant three stars, but I find myself frequently returning and/or recommended.
Great place in a really great location, music is good although music was really really loud, so I must say this is not a place to go and have deep meaningful conversations as you can barely hear clearly, they let you add songs to the playlist which I think is amazing and the service is really good as well.
Tavern on Jane in the West Village is a charming spot with an inviting tavern vibe. It’s the perfect spot to stop by for a beer or a glass of wine. The atmosphere, complete with a large counter and lively diners, is its standout feature. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the warm environment. I had the buffalo burger, which was cooked medium-rare to perfection—nice although lacking a hint of salt in my opinion and then, for my sweet tooth craving, I went for a dark chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream which was delish! The food is okay only not extremely memorable. Overall, it’s a great place to soak in the ambiance and enjoy good company.
8/24/24 back for dinner with the GF. We sat outside, great service. We split a bottle of white, nice. *No glass outside* We had the Smithfield Fries and split the Creekstone burger, they were out of Brussels sprouts so we got broccoli. I liked the Smithfield fries but the distribution of pork, cheese and other stuff could have been better than just piled on top. Also the fries are still on the short side.... The burger was really good. It's a cool place, certainly worth a meal. Beer selection is ok but nothing outstanding, mostly typical brews. Summer 2021: First time here, with friends. Service was great. We sat outside in the street tent, nice tables and chairs. I had the Jane street burger, it was good. The fries were small and battered, not my favorite preparation but they were ok. I'd prefer to have longer fries and not battered. The beer was good too.
This is our second visit, we immediately recognized our previous staff that facilitated our experience. We knew the food was good, the location was prime with too much people watching 🤣, no really it was so nice withe shade trees and blocked off street. Ask for Michael, she was awesome.
The place is nice but food is just okay. There is so many places to visit in NYC so it’s not the one I would be back again. The service is really good, friendly helpful staff! All stars go to the service ✨ So we did order mussels- overall they were good but a little bit of spicy I would add for sure, otherwise it tasted just ok. Server recommended us to get famous Jane burger- the burger was really good, but our fault that we didn’t check that it comes with fried onions and bbq sauce. So if you want to try burger I would recommend to go with simple one. Buffalo Chicken wings was so fried and not enough sauce on them, and they felt like too much fat on them 😬 But if you around just go and have couple drinks there, atmosphere is cool! Also you can draw on your table, they do have crayons on the each table 👌з
I’m kinda conflicted. I loved the vibe, this is the type of neighborhood joint that has all but disappeared from NYC. It’s charming! Old school bar/tavern vibes, friendly folks and staff. Servers are working hard. My drink was awful, an Old Fashioned that came out with a weird orange color, not sure what happened there. My friend got a wine that was a generous pour and he enjoyed it. Mixed reviews on the entrees. My husband loved his daily special pork chop. My burger (I think it was called Santa Fe, with chilies on top)was poorly formed and a bit of a mess. Our friend’s Asian salad seemed ok. We didn’t love the apple crumb cake caramel dessert. I think we’ll be back to give it another try. Maybe I’ll stick to wine. They have a nice menu.
Is very relaxed neighborhood bar. The staff seem pleasant and quite attentive, my bartender, I think, was the owner as well and he was quiet but kind. The food was average. It needed a little more flavoring. The bloody Mary's looked amazing but I only stopped in for a Guinness.
The environment and food were nice. We did however see the server take off his mask, cough into his hand, and then continue to serve without washing his hands. A little later, we saw him take his mask off, mess with his nose for a bit, and then serve a beer without washing his hands. This sketched us out and killed our appetite. There’s a pandemic surging which has prevented me from going out for the past two weeks. This was my first time eating at a restaurant since the surge and I was quickly reminded why. I left with anxiety and annoyance as opposed to full and happy. I’d give the experience way more stars if the staff was trained in proper sanitary procedures. If they have been trained things should be enforced better. I’ll likely be back but it won’t be until after the pandemic is a thing of the past. I believe the receipt said the servers name was Erick R… be careful if he’s your server.
Update: Ate here again, nice waiter, sat outside on a beautiful night, ordered the chili and only ate it out of respect for the cow that gave its life for that tragedy. Consider drinks only here. Definitely skip the chili.
Eh, nice little spot. Not too busy and has a nice quick bite. The bartender was a bit upset to swap out my drink although he offered to do so, slamming it on the bar. This kind of threw my friend and I off a bit but the experience was okay outside of this. Would recommend if there's nothing else open.
I think they forgot my burger on the grill cus I get charred but there was just a CHUNK of like char and my burger buns and sautéed onions were cold. Im sure it would've been better if it wasn't cold with a slightly warm patty. Like how is it like completely burnt on the outside but still pink on the inside? Maybe they just dont clean their grills and I got a chunk of that. The service was okay. It wasn't bad but it wasn't like the best thing ever. The atmosphere is definitely the best thing about this place, I really like the dim lighting and the nice tavern look. I'd only ever go here for the drinks and a basket of fries. (!!)
I don't drink and I asked the waitress about a virgin margarita and she scoffed at me and said " Like lime juice and soda?!?" With a Little laugh. It was uncalled for and I almost wish I hadn't gone there, but I did. I had the Mussels and a bowl of vegetable beef soup. The soup was okay and the Mussels were good but nothing to write home about.
We got the grilled chicken on brioche which was super bland and missing the pesto, they did not even have a side of pesto and brought out vinaigrette instead. Cobb salad was pretty good. They forgot about the soup which came out after the entrees. Not the worst dining experience but definitely would not come back again.
Very mixed experience. The location and setting is great. The service was quite efficient. But the food was a real disappointment. I ordered a 28 days aged burger, medium rare. It came out as medium but with a distinctly burnt crust. Ruined. And crab cake sliders were totally dry, actually the texture and taste were of fish cakes that were over fried.
Most of our hamburgers were good. However, food took 35 minutes to serve (not busy time), and the chicken wrap wasn't good at all.
I had come in around 10pm and ordered a cup of the soup of the day, but they were out and only had French onion! I was totally okay with that, but it was a $6 up charge from the cup of the day. It would have been kind if the waitress only charged me the price of the regular soup, as only having French onion was out of my control. The French onion soup was phenomenal, but service lacking communication of the up charge.
Incredibly rude staff accused us of not paying our bill, despite us showing them the receipt on our phones, and instead of just coming over and politely asking us to try and solve the puzzle. The bartender was Accusatory, rude and actually took the drinks off our table that we paid for. The manager was kind enough to refund us, but the only answer the bartender has was it’s not his night and that was about it. The drinks were terrible, two Irish coffees and a hot toddy, which, we get, but it was the end of the night, but it’s still on the menu.
Terrine terrible and I mean terrible service from tall slim Caucasian male won’t be back ever
The bartender was incredibly rude to our party. I asked for a round of espresso martini’s, and look it’s fair enough of they don’t serve them - but he just rudely shouted “no” at us and was condescending when we sat there in silence after being yelled at. As a mixed group of men and women we felt really uncomfortable for the rest of our stay, and left after one drink. I’d probably recommend avoiding this place if I were you.
I come here all the time, but tonight 5/28 this guy “Mario” behind the bar is charging $2 more than what’s posted on the their price list. When I asked about it before we left he says, it’s “that’s the tax, you’re not from New York are you?” Lol I was a BARTENDER for years, now NYC business owner, BORN AND RAISED in New York. THANKS. I would be gutted to find out my employee is skimming off the top. We still tipped the thief, although he’s taking care of it himself. I’m sure irs would love to know you’re charging above the tax rate.
I was very disappointed at the burger! The burger was burnt the Brussel sprouts were burnt but we were too shy and hungry to ask for another one and tried to finish it but I very much regret it! I liked the ambiance though! It was cute during Christmas. The service was ok too
Once the ice melted in my water, turns out there was an open drug baggie under the ice. I drank half of the water with an open drug baggie in it. No manager on site. And the server attempted to gaslight me saying, “It’s not a DRUG baggie. 🙄”. You tell me what else goes in a 1 inch ziplock bag...? And the best they can do is comp 1 drink?! I have worked in service for years. I get that things happen, but this place can’t keep their drug bags out of the ice.
Caught the bartender tonight on 5/28 overcharging me 2$ on every beer and when I asked him about it he said “you’re not from where we are you”. I’m born and raised in NYC and have been working in bars and the service industry for 15 years. He then claimed that was the tax rate on top of beers in NYC. I was paying cash every round for context. I frequent this bar often after work and will not be going back. Thieves.
