Opinions de The French Quarter Newcastle Upon Tyne
The French Quarter is easily one of my top five restaurants in Newcastle and an absolute must visit if you're looking for a high quality meal paired with outstanding service. The restaurant itself is beautiful, tucked away in a charming archway near Newcastle’s historic castle. The ambience is warm and inviting, setting the perfect tone for an exceptional dining experience. We began with a charcuterie board, which was perfectly portioned for three people to share and was a great way to start the meal. For the mains, I chose the duck, and it was absolutely incredible ... Tender and just melted in your mouth, bursting with flavour. We also shared a few sides, and the dauphinoise potatoes were rich, creamy, and unforgettable. The service was excellent. Attentive, friendly, and professional, which really elevated the experience. While the prices might seem a bit steep at first glance, the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere makes it more than worth it.
Me and my partner dined here for a belated birthday gift and could not have been more impressed by the staff and the restaurant in general! Tom our server had the perfect level of attentiveness making sure we were having a great time whilst also leaving us to enjoy the restaurants atmosphere. Tarina (I believe that’s her name) the general manager was just as classy. Very funny, welcoming and made us feel as if we had been there 100 times before! The food was way beyond our expectations and every single bite was incredible. We left Tom to decide our main meat dish and he gave us the confit duck leg in orange sauce which blew our minds! From first sip of water to last spoonful of chocolate mousse and espresso we could not fault a single thing. Whenever we are back down in Newcastle it will be non negotiable that we will be phoning to make a reservation. 11/10
What a lovely restaurant. My son had been there once and knows how much we enjoy good food, nice wine and how much we value a good atmosphere. The French Quarter managed to tick all the boxes for us. We had a nice selection of food to share among us, two wine carrafes and some dessert. Everything was lovely, and the service was superb. We will visit again when we are back in Newcastle again.
Such a lovely place. Really gets the atmosphere right with cool interior and great service. The food is great and there's a good selection for vegetarians and vegans alike. Would prefer to have a "pronunciation guide" for the dish names as they are in french and it would save me a bit of red-faced butchering of the language (don't worry, there's a description of what you're eating in English). Great selection of wines and other drinks and many bottles waiting to be taken home.
Called off in here for dinner a few days before New Year’s Eve on a bustling Sunday evening. Had a bit of a wait before staff took our order, but I can cope with that as they were so busy. Drinks: Opted for the house wine, and wasn’t disappointed. Exceptionally good quality. Food: Loved the steak! Full of flavour. The dauphinoise potatoes didn’t disappoint. One minor criticism is that the frog legs seemed a little lacking something, with the parsley and garlic sauce a little too thin to cling or offer much flavour. Lived in France for a few years, so have had a fair few of them and think they should probably review that particular dish. The rest of the meal was absolutely lovely though, so wouldn’t let this put me off recommending the place. Finished off with a wonderful Café Gourmand with one of the best dessert wine pairing selections I’ve had in a long time. Loved the way they placed the tasting notes around the glasses. All-in-all: I’d definitely return and recommend.
This place is special! Incredible food, wonderful staff and a great atmosphere. We came as a group of 4 and had the best evening. Delicious yet simple food, beautifully served and cooked with care. Extensive wine list. Fun, knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend. Wish we had taken more photos of the food. It was all so good!
This was one of the most wonderful dinner experiences I have had in a long time. The staff, especially Ted and Jasmine, were INCREDIBLE. The food was FANTASTIC. I walked in as 1. Sat at the bar. Discussed with my server Ted his recommendations. I ordered the escargots, au fromage de chèvre, confit de canard and the brioche falcon pain perdu for dessert (highly recommend). The staff helped me pair wines with my food and dessert and were a pleasure to talk to. A truly incredible establishment. I look forward to coming again next time I am in Newcastle.
Went here during restaurant week and was blown away with the quality of the food and how nice the serving staff were. Went for the three course offering and each dish tasted amazing, with good portions to not leave you feeling incredibly full afterwards. The chicken supreme had an amazing creamy sauce that quite frankly, I wanted to lick the plate afterwards 😄. The accompanying potatoes were equally delicious with the right amount of seasoning. Will definitely be back 😀.
I celebrated my 40th birthday here with my family, and it was a truly memorable experience. The food was exquisite, the wine outstanding, and the service warm and attentive throughout. We had a wonderful time together and will always carry very special memories of this exceptional restaurant.
Absolutely incredible meal. Each element was thought out. Even what you'd think was a simple side of green beans was exceptionally seasoned and cooked. Personal stand outs where the sea bream special, dauphinoise and duck on the charcuterie board. Amazing and friendly service from our waiter Jack, had great wine and food recommendations, notably the sauviougn blanc. Would definitely come back again
The best meal out we’ve had in ages!! We visited last night for restaurant week, it was our first time. Greeted by a super friendly waitress, lovely corner table. The service was outstanding. Friendly, efficient but not fussy. They’ve got this spot on! Food was amazing. Fresh, tasty, authentic. The jambon, figs and dolcelatte cheese starter was to die for! They ran out of one of the puddings and swiftly added a replacement. The wine of the month was amazing too. I was a little apprehensive and at £10 a glass I was hoping it would be special. It was! We will definitely visit here again!
The most amazing find. From start to finish we cannot praise this beautiful restaurant enough. The staff are incredible the ambience is amazing. We sat at the Bar and I think that made our French dining even more of an experience. The drinks are fantastic, and both myself and my husband agree it has been the best meal of our lives. Its not hard to see why this quirky French quarter is rated no.4 in the top 10 of Newcastle resturants. We can't wait to return
It's a wonderful restaurant with an excellent wine list and a short menu of French dishes, charcuterie and cheeses that is of very high quality. I will warn that portions may be too dainty for the more voracious, but I found it just nice. I could say I polished off my dishes without feeling bloated. Good veggie options in case age old prejudices about French insistence that meat is essential surface. I had the put lentil stuffed courgette main and it was delicious.
Absolutely fantastic experience here last night. 6 of us ate, so we had a good range of the menu and everything was delicious. Really great vegetarian choices and some delicious wines. Staff were super friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere was wonderful. This has place had been on my to do list for a while and will be back any chance I get. Thank you for making my wife's 40th such a great experience
Saturday 17th Jan 2026 19:00pm Booking. - 1st ever experience of traditional French Cuisine. I must firstly begin in applauding the phenomenal service provided by the staff. They were fantastic and very attentitive to every part of our night. I chose the Escargot, as I had never tried it before, along with Prawn in Garlic/Chilli and Beef Dishes. Whilst the Escargot was a surprise to the taste buds in a negative way, this in no way is taking anything away from their exceptional chefs. (As I said it was the 1st time I'd tasted them, and they were not my own tastes). The other dishes and drinks were excellent and would recommend the restaurant whole heartedly.
My partner and I went to the French Quarter for Valentine’s Day and had the most amazing meal. The food was absolutely incredible, 10/10, and the atmosphere and service were fantastic. I can’t thank the staff enough for making us feel so welcome and giving us recommendations! Will definitely be back! 😁👏
This place is wonderful. The food, the atmosphere and the staff and especially the lovely Maitre de who really looked after us, the whole team are very knowledgable and attentive. I would definitely recommend the French Quarter, you will not be disappointed but you do need to book in advance, it was very busy even mid week!
Happened to be strolling by at lunchtime and we were able to bag a table without a reservation. However, I'd recommend booking if you don't want to be disappointed. It got really busy and vibey not long after we were seated. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. The food was superb. So so delicious! Can't recommend this place highly enough.
Delicious foods. Small place need to come early. Value for the money & don't forget to try the Creme brulee
Best French food we have had in a long time. As we are visiting Newcastle, thought to have something different - the place is cosy, staff were friendly, and the food and wine were exquisite. We did ordered on the excessive side and enjoyed a good bottle of wine. But would still say it a good value for money. Looking forward returning again!
Visited the place yesterday. Food was delicious. Customer service was great, staff were knowledgeable about the food and gave excellent recommendations. 😊
We loved every minute of our time here. They serve fantastic food and have a great atmosphere. The waiter was very attentive and kind. They do wine tasting here which was really good. After talking to our waiter we discovered thier lunch menu changes weekly so no doubt, we be coming again!
Amazing! The olive tapenade and baked camembert both to die for! Main dishes are delicious too, especially the beef bavette, duck in orange sauce and potato dauphinoise. Huge selection of wine! Service is always really good. Can't wait for my next visit!
Delicious food and great customer service!
First time at the French Quarter yesterday, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Had a fantastic time, the waiter explained the menu and courses to us and the service was brilliant. The food was absolutely delicious and the house red wine was very nice!! Can't wait to return!
Very nice place! We booked three weeks ago. Foods are amazing! Especially the roasted duck and the baked cheese are my favourite! Mussels are very fresh and tasty as well! Highly recommended!!
A wonderfully relaxed restaurant serving great tasting food. Designed more as sharing plates. Service was excellent and I was impressed to the effort put into cleaning and polishing the glasses.
Food was. Although the waiter described it as tapas style portions we found it to be still quite filling. We tried a couple of white wines and they were nice. I had the 3 course lunch menu which was good value. The a la carte menu were decent too. Service was a particular highlight with the staff being helpful not intrusive.
Really great french food with excellent wine menu
Ok, so our 1st time. It's been open 4 years. Very attentive front of house staff giving a good explanation about how the menu works. Then very prompt service, not over intrusive, superb food, portions just right and delicious house wine. Price very acceptable mid to slightly upper range. Definitely recommended. We will return for sure - maybe also for a set lunch menu.
Tres bien. Magnificent meal. Wine 🍷 delicious 😋 Staff very friendly, service very good. Good atmosphere Recommend will definitely be returning 🙂 😊
The best cheese board we've ever had! What a treat on a cold wet autumn afternoon; a lazy few hours at French Quarter eating cheese, drinking wine, listening to the occasional click clack of trains overhead (the café is set in a beautifully converted railway arch) and people watching. The waiting staff were wonderful, taking us through the cheese selection and wine flight (including orange wine which was a novelty) and being accommodating and friendly. Deciding it was too nice place to leave we even managed the dessert selection, which included a chocolate mousse that was exceptional and worth a visit on its own! A little slice of Paris in Newcastle — if it were possible, our rating would be 6 out of 5. Magnifique! 🇫🇷✨
Great restaurant, staff were welcoming and we felt at ease. Really relaxed atmosphere. The menu and the format may put people off, but the staff do a superb job explaining the process. Food and wine knowledge excellent. Food quality and taste was exceptional. Elle was our waitress and she was top class.
Fabulous! The brochettes de poissons were excellent! Nice touch with the merguez ! Also loved the confit de canard. I picked the ratatouille and it was almost as nice as me mam's back in France! :o) It was just really nice! Finished it with the crème brûlée and an île flottante.... Soooooo yummy. I guess I'll have to come back to try more. Thank you for the nice evening.
A lovely family run business. Menu and food is excellent. A true Francophiles delight. Staff are very helpful.
Absolutely love this place. The food, service and wine is next level. Come here every year for my birthday and it never disappoints, booked back again for January. Highly recommend.
We had a fabulous dinner to celebrate my father in law’s 80th birthday. The service was superb, the food delicious and the environment was great - there is a buzz but it is not too noisy for a group. We would definitely return and highly recommend.
A wonderful meal lovely 😍 staff and ambience. All food wad enjoyed and the staff are very knowledgeable about the food and wines on offer. My only slight criticism is the dauphinoise potatoes had never seen cream and were very fatty more like a potato boulangere but had a wonderful time with my gorgeous man
I had been French quarter twice. The first time on lunch was quite nice. I found out don’t be too greedy other too much foods. Two starter and two main course share with my friend. The portion is small but it tastes nice. It just bought me back second time for my husband birthday. The lunch service is just so so. 20 to 30 £ each with drink. But it is very very good you found French food at Newcastle which is great. Because it was my husband birthday. We got recommendation from the waiter he did give us good choice. The French quarter portion a bit smaller then normal and also it was birthday. We were keep ordering a lots foods. Still did not feel full 🤤. £ 80each only one drink. I am sure if you enjoy wine then the foods match with it will be excellent and it is the style of this menu created for.😊
We had a very nice meal in this French style restaurant. A couple of starters, followed by the bavette steak and the duck leg. We shared the dauphinois potato and a large dish of French beans. It was all excellent, although the bavette was a little chewy. Service and atmosphere was good and the price was not too bad either.
Managed to get a table for two at short notice on a busy Saturday afternoon. Helpful knowledgeable service team. I liked the wine flights and mix and match option. The croquettes were a bit disappointing due to the texture. Expected a bit of crunch but nothing. Dauphinois was very good and Bourgingon too. Dessert was quite average tbh. Sounded good but the pineapple rings looked suspiciously tinned. Not a lot there for £8.50. Was a bit surprised to see bread on the bill but that's my fault for not checking.
First time visiting this restaurant with two friends. The food was very good and tasted very authentic. However, we were advised by our server to order 2–3 dishes per person. We followed this suggestion and ordered around 2.5 dishes each, but the portions were very generous, so we ended up with far too much food and a lot went to waste. As a result, we paid much more than necessary for what would normally have been a reasonable amount. Considering that the average spend is £40–£60 per person and that the restaurant is positioned as a more high-end venue, we also expected them to accept American Express. Unfortunately, they do not, which felt quite surprising for a place of this level.
The food was lovely and the service good. However, our whole group felt it was not good value for money. The £30 charcuterie board that does not come with any biscuits/crackers etc (meaning you need to pay an extra £4 for half a slice of bread each) felt particularly overpriced. The food is pitched as ‘French tapas’, with 2-3 small plates per person recommended. These were nicely cooked, but for the price point (£13 for a single small courgette stuffed with lentils…) I’m not sure it’s outstanding enough. A nice location and good food, but be prepared to pay a premium for it.
We were underwhelmed by the taste and cooking of the food here. The reviews were excellent and it was hard to get a booking which are all good signs of a quality foodie spot but unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. The pork medallions were a bit dry and over cooked and so was the steak. The confit duck was good though as well as the chocolate mousse pudding, so not bad just not the excellent we were hoping for. However, what was excellent was the red wine👌 Overall we left disappointed as we thought this place was going to be a rave review but don’t think we will be going back.
Stopped in for lunch. Unfortunately the service didn’t match the price point. No water refilling. Requested the dessert menu and we were asked if we would prefer that the meal plates be cleared first … because that’s how they usually do it. Suggested response “absolutely. Let me clear these dishes and I’ll grab it for you”. Anyway, when a restaurant has a certain price point, a matching level if service is expected. Overall - disappointing.
