Opinions de Cafe Colucci Oakland
Got the vegetarian and meat samplers and they were good. The meat and vegetarian subussa were really good, dipping sauce is slightly spicy. Service was great
The most delicious food you will have in your entire life!!!!
Cafe Colucci has been on our list for months so glad we had the opportunity to visit on MLK Jr. Day ❤️ Everything from the vibe, food, and service were better than we could’ve imagined. What a fun time and thanks to Damian for the hospitality🔥 Some favorites were the sambusas, fish, lentils, tibs, and tiramisu. We will absolutely be back ✨
Found this gem passing thru Emeryville. The doro wot with gomen is wonderful. The bere here is perfect!!! The flavors are wonderful!!! Love that they sell the spices too. The taste is wonderful. Will definitely be back to get my Ethiopian flavor fix!!! Pleasant atmosphere and good service. Good food, good flavors, the best!!!
The best vegetarian Ethiopian food I've ever had! Highly recommend adding the tibs, eggplant or mushroom, to your vegan combination plate. The berebere mocha with oatmilk is delicious with just the right amount of spice and served in a substantial handleless mug that warms your hands. The tiramisu was a pleasant surprise and one of the best I've had.
Pro Tip: Go for the meat and vegan sampler on a big plate—it’s the perfect way to taste a variety of stews in one go. Every bite had something unique to offer. We also tried the lamb tips, which were melt-in-your-mouth buttery and absolutely delicious. Shoutout to our server, who was incredibly patient as we bombarded him with questions about the different spices used in the cocktail menu. Speaking of cocktails… we may have ordered half the menu—and loved every single one. Here are the standouts we’d come back for: 1. Lion’s Mane – The shai kemin spice steals the show here. Complex, bold, and unforgettable—this was hands-down my favorite. 2. Give Them the Beans – Think espresso martini meets boozy chocolate milkshake. Rich, smooth, and indulgent. 3. Garden of Eden – Sweet, floral, and beautifully balanced. A refreshing contrast to the bolder drinks.
Absolutely incredible experience! This was my first time at an Ethiopian restaurant, and I’m so glad I chose this place. I ordered vegetarian food — the spiced tea, sambussa, and the veggie platter — and hands down, it was some of the best food I’ve ever had. Every bite was flavorful and unique. What made the experience even better was the amazing service. The staff took the time to explain what each dish was, which made it feel welcoming and thoughtful. You can tell they really care about sharing their culture and food. Highly recommend — I’ll definitely be coming back!
My favorite Habesha restaurant!! The food is so good! The lamb tibs, atakilt (cabbage) and shiro (puréed chickpeas) are my favorites. I would say skip the doro wot (it’s 2 chicken drumsticks, needed salt). The tibs portions are more generous than most Ethiopian restaurants. The sambusas (samosa) were super fresh. The beef was great. The lentil ones were super spicy and too hot for me. The service is impressive. Our waitress gifted us baklava. It was so fresh I could taste the rose water. They have real injera that is gluten free but make sure you ask for it. And hands down Ethiopian food is the most delicious vegan/vegetarian food ever. Every time we go the place is packed but we typically walk in without a reservation. The inside is lovely and there is outdoor seating in the back.
First time joining some family who are loyal Cafe Colucci fans. I’ve eaten at many Ethiopian spots and I’d say this is my new favorite. From the ambience, service, drinks and most importantly the food, everything was wonderful. There is love and thought put into each aspect of the restaurant. The food was very fresh and flavorful, we had both the meat and vegan sampler as well as drinks and appetizers which were delicious. We met the owner who was kind and welcoming as well as our waiter Ricardo was extremely attentive and kind. I will definitely be back when visiting Oakland.
Very lovely place with very nice service. The food was delicious! The back patio was decorated so well and made it really homey! 10/10 Went back to this place, and took some more pictures 😀. The outdoor decor speaks for itself, and so does the food! I thought some friends here, we had the vegan sampler, Wot with chicken, and Buticha all on one platter. We also had the wheat blend injera. Buticha is my personal favorite 🤗. This was also a very good deal, I had leftovers for days even after stuffing myself completely full!
The new location at 5849 San Pablo Avenue in North Oakland is fantastic! The open kitchen is huge, and the dining area is beautifully decorated. There's an outdoor space out back too, and that's where most of the diners were on this afternoon. The service was great -- super nice waiter and the food arrived fast! We had the meat sambussas (triangular pastries like samosas), the meat combination platter, and the baklava. Everything was delicious, and very reasonably priced, especially for the amount of food you get. The meat combo platter was more than enough food for two people. We had a coffee with the baklava and hung out for a bit just enjoying the new space. Great experience. So glad these guys moved in -- we'll be back!
-Vegan platter - 9.5/10 excellent, loved the two cold salady things Would be amazing to see even more plant based options like plant based meats on the menu in the future! Legumes and such are great, but can be an overload of fiber.
We’ve loved this spot for a long time — it’s been our go-to in town, and we’ve had so many great meals here. That’s why our most recent visit surprised us a bit. Several of the dishes we normally order tasted different than usual, and a couple seemed to have dipped in quality. Nothing was bad, but it didn’t quite match the consistently excellent experience we’ve come to expect. We’re hoping this was just an off night, because when they’re on their game, they’re truly fantastic. We’ll definitely be back, just crossing our fingers for the old magic next time.
Pretty good actually. The service was fine, good for Bay Area standards. The bathroom and the interior were clean and well presented. There's an open kitchen here. The injera was food and their kik alicha was supreme. If you like mashed potatoes, it's that exact same texture as that but with split peas. The vegan sampler was excellent. The meat sampler was rough. Nothing was really good imo. The mushroom tibs were great. The chickpeas are rubbish, don't get the mitten shiro.
Never been although the apics. & Reviews look Good !!! Only ' downside ' - No tel. # listed. No Idea if any of their ' Mutton & Chicken offerings are " Halal " (??) .I do love " Ethiopian Cuisine ". A tel. # is important- as even for Doordash Etc. ' Ordering ' - it's ' comforting ' to know one can call to custom tailor the order to ' Consumer Needs '. I order from Red Sea occasionally, and the Ladies that work there are ' Usually Quite Affentive & Honest " -:informing me that only the Chicken & Lamb are HALAL. Not the Beef. Useful Tip !!!!
First time trying Ethiopian food, was not disappointed! Got the sampler to split between two, and it was definitely enough food. I didn’t realize that when they ask if you want Injera, which is like the bread/rice option you see at other restaurants, they provide it as a separate charge and that the plate came with some (it’s actually the base of it), so I wouldn’t have ordered extra. The sampler was varied with several options, and the flavors very tasty - perhaps the only downside was the actual amount of chicken for some of the samples was a little small. For the price too it wasn’t outrageously expensive either, though it is on the pricier side.
The service dining at night has not been good, the last time I waited a very long time for my food and the bill, it wasn't even busy, we haven't returned to dine in since. I will stick to delivery or takeout, though sometimes I ask that they not swap items out on Doordash and refund instead if my order is unavailable and they don't listen. The cocktails are creative and I like the little market inside. The lady with the tattoos who works daytime is nice.
The service was pretty good. The waiter answered all questions very sweet person..The appetizer was on point. It was like a samosa, but it had beef and lentils in it.I had a lemonade. The lemonade was really, really good. The main dish was okay but it wasn't super flavorful. It was the meat sampler.Maybe I need to try a different dish, but I didn't like it that much. Not worth for the price.
Love the food, but take out portions are ridiculously small. I’ve eaten here many times, in this location and the previous one. The food is great! Although I eat meat, I really love the vegan sampler platter. I’ve gotten takeout from there twice now, and I’ve noticed that they give significantly less food in the takeout version of the same dish. It’s really disappointing. When I eat in the restaurant, we typically share the vegan sampler platter and maybe get an app, though the app is not necessary. Ordering the same dish as takeout I am able to finish the entire dish myself. It is a big and noticeable difference. I guess it’s not a good idea to get takeout from there. I think they are just trying to fit in too small containers and they need to buy larger ones. Or they should charge less for the to go version. I will remove this review if they fix the problem.
Don't do celebrations here! I came here for my birthday and we couldn't sit down until our last person came... This also happened to an even larger group then ours. Have never seen a restaurant do this and I felt like a number. Food was pretty good though but won't be coming back, same for the people who invited me. Will change review if this is changed!
I went to a couple of other Ethiopian restaurants before, but this one was the worst. The teff injera costed extra, and it was served COLD! I always had hot injera in other restaurants, so it was shocking. The portion of the meat sampler was very small compared to other restaurants I went. I order another dish (wot), but it was tasteless. Quite disappointed.
