Off the Hook Seafood & Super Burritos

I've been coming here for over 10 years and every time I come it's an enjoyable experience that I love to share with everyone. I live in San jose and coming to Oakland for the catfish and fries is worth it every time. Thanks off the hook for the good eating

TL;DR the best fish fry in downtown Oakland This review is for the fish only as I haven’t tried the burritos here yet, BUT if the fish is anything to go on, I expect great things! First, this is a very no-frills place and for me, that’s perfect. The prices are on handwritten signs and the dining area is nothing special, but the fish is GOOD! Again, this is a fish fry and not fish and chips, meaning that there is a cornmeal crust rather than a beer batter, which fries differently. That said, I ordered the red snapper and it was done perfectly. It even held up to the short walk I took to find a place to sit down and eat it, which I really appreciated. The fish was flaky and flavorful and clearly the star of the show, rather than the cornmeal crust. For those who might feel that the fish needs a little more salt, I’d highly recommend dipping it in the Frank’s Red Hot that comes with it, as that for me added the perfect amount of salt, acid, and heat to make the red snapper shine. A regular-sized order came out to five pieces of snapper, placed on top of a good serving of fries. A good value given inflation and everything at $13.95 ($15.38 after tax), especially for downtown Oakland. Even after eating all that fried food, I’m not feeling weighed down, slow, or greasy, which speaks well of the frying temperature and quality of the oil. I would absolutely encourage people to try this place out as it looks well-loved and frequented by people living in the area, so I’d love to see this place stay open, if not thrive. The woman behind the counter was very nice as well, which I welcomed as another place I’ve ordered fish from downtown had staff that was frankly unpleasant to interact with. Anyway, would I recommend Off the Hook Seafood & Super Burritos? YES and in particular, I’d recommend the red snapper.

Definitely rating this place 5 stars because of how good the food tastes. The Asian couple has serviced us for years with this good food. The inside is not all that big, has always been an order to go spot for us. Customer service varies, but most times the husband is always the nicest. I love the prawn and fries you should try some !

Off the hook has been closed for repair for many months which left a huge void in my family dinners. When I called today and found they were open, I was ecstatic. Their quality of a meal did not let me down and the price did not go up. So glad you are up and running again

The chef is very professional and knows his clientele very well. A warm and friendly place to have a delicious bite to eat. Generous portions!

Good food and lots of it at an affordable price. The ordering process is a little unusual (see the guy who sits at the table on your right, order your food, get your ticket, and pay at the counter. You may have to wait if he's taking phone orders) but Off the Hook is my go-to-place when I'm in Oakland.

I always get the LRG snapper with fries.. really good, great portion size, could give more fries though 🤷🏾‍♂️

The food is really good, however service is slow and the place could really use a upgrade or renovation, because of the quality of food people will come but not want to waste time sitting down to eat/enjoy the food, just get it to go rather!

I got the fish burrito and it was huge and tasty. I could not finish it in one setting. My only issue was the prices dont match what's listed so inquire 1st before ordering.

My daughter in law brought it home. The catfish was excellent however I'm turned off by the reviews that said there were flies on the food. Will not go there or eat their food again. Too bad!

The food is really off the hook but kinda pricey however they do give good portions. The guy is rude. No where to park at anytime of the day or night.

Good fish but the Chinese guy who is always taking orders at the window is so rude!! All the time!! Why be rude & mean to your customers when we are the reason that you are still in business?? I noticed that he doesn't use gloves or wash his hands after handling money & pressing the buttons on the cash register! I literally saw him grab the fries with his bare hands right after! 🤢 You've been warned!!

One thing about this place is they do put a lot of meat on their burritos & tacos. The taste... well I've definitely have better. They add water to the ingredients once they dry out. But the worse part is the customer service is the WORST. The man that prepares the food can be really snappy. He was very rude to my nephew when we went in.

The place has changed a lot the food is not as good as it use to be. They don't always wear gloves when serving. And they no longer want people to order at the window but go to a table where a Caucasian older guy perhaps an employee takes the order, is eating and let him take your order. He writes it down then yells to the back. Yuck!

I gave them 2 just cause the food is good but the owner is a straight a**hole. I'm not going back. Don't care how good the food is. He be making people sound like they stupid or something. Fighting words in my eyes sometimes.

You'd be lucky to get them to take your order over the phone. The fish is good, but trying to call in your order is HORRIBLE. I've skipped going here over 10 times, because I just couldn't place my order and didn't want to wait 20 minutes to order when I got there.

I went into grab lunch for someone. This is the place they requested food from. 😳 Honestly this place has been in business for years. The owner hasn't changed anything about the interior. Everything looked dusty and outdated from the table, chairs with a huge discolored plastic wall that seperates the food from the people. The owners appearance & mood questionable. He seems exhausted & from the looks of his outfit he doesn't take out time for himself. His T-shirt was like baby huey.Why not wear an apron or have a custom T-Shirt? One thing I did appreciate is he did wash his hands & put on gloves. Hopefully the owner can hire someone to work the register so he doesn't have to do both. Kinda clustered. I also need him to pay closer attention to how he is moving food over each other while making burritos because a splatter of beef grease landed in the rice🙄. You have to be very observant when it comes to food. A customer can be seriously harmed from food being handled improperly. The last time I ate at this location, I wasn't pleased with the quality of my food. This used to be the spot for a fat delicious burrito. If the owner happens reads this..its not to late to make improvements.

The Asian guy is very rude I confronted them about my order was made incorrect for the 5th time very irritating and a waste of my lunch having to come back in fourth I order the same thing every Friday. Just make it easy for yourself and don’t step foot inside this jungle.

Terrible service. I placed an order and I was quoted a pick up time. When I arrive at the establishment, I was told 20 more mins. As I'm standing there the lady says, we were suppose to be closed today. Service was unacceptable and won't ever visit this place again.

It’s kind of hilarious because I truly never write reviews and decided to look this place up to grab some food after work. The owner literally sees me walking up, turns around and locks the door. Walked back a minute later and put up a sign saying gone to lunch. I understand that everyone has breaks and time is needed but the way it was done is what counted to me as very unprofessional. Actually glad I didn’t spend money here. Most likely won’t come back.

I would NEVER I MEAN NEVER go here again. I called and placed a order for prawns and catfish with crispy fries. When I arrive I pay, pick up my food and left. I get home and everything’s crispy to the point where the catfish was extremely hard and not enjoyable. At first I didn’t want to complain but it’s not what I ordered and I couldn’t eat super hard catfish. So I called back, and the owner said you wanted everything crispy? I told him no just the fries. This man literally starts screaming at me telling me to bring it back and he will cook it when I get there and hang up in my face. This was obviously a miscommunication…but the fact that he was treating a customer with that type of disrespect just shocks me. I’m highly upset with this place. Horrible customer service. I ended up throwing the food AWAY! I won’t have a mad man cook my food. He probably would do something to it without me seeing.

Place is extremely unclean. There were lots of flies and food exposed for the flies to settle on. On top of that the customer service was horrible. 6 customers left at the same time for their treatment of a Muslim and Black family. That experience was truly "off the hook." I will never dine here.

The burrito was horrible! The chicken was old, over cooked and had no taste. The guy taking the orders was unprofessional and rude. This place needs a serious upgrade! The food use to be delicious but now it seems like the meat is not fresh and has been sitting out all day. I ordered three chicken burritos and one shrimp and steak burrito. We all haf the same reaction gross! I will not spend another dime in Off the Hook.

Yuck. I was hoping for decent seafood on my visit to the Bay Area. Based on the reviews, I have to assume that people around here can’t taste anything. My $25 2-fish combo was so over-seasoned and over-cooked that I could only eat the fries. Which needed no ketchup. The fish, or some facsimile thereof, was sliced so thin that when I tried to remove the breading there was nothing left over. Sorry, but this place isn’t worth the trip to the ghetto.

He told the 2nd patron 15 mins. And then he noticed me . I ordered and he told me 20 mins. If I wanted to wait,I said I would pay and come back.The owner insisted I wait for him to prepare the prevoius orders before he would take my money.I repeated I would pay and come back,he had a very nasty attitude even when other customers tried to explain. I told him he did not have to worry about me or my family coming into his place ever again.I am writing this review because this gentleman treated a 15 year plus customer horribly,he obviously has no idea how to sustain a customer base. I am dissapointed and will NEVER enjoy another meal from this establishment.The power of the dollar is powerful and I encourage everyone to not patronize places that dont respect you.

If the health dept came in that day it wouldn’t have passed, unless they only allow this because of the clientele they serve. Disgusting food served here.

When you call them and want to speak to a manager, the employees don't want to hand the phone over to the manager and always say the manager is busy. If you tell them that you don't mind waiting they hang up on you. (very rude employees). They sure earned this rating from me and lost a good customer. Note: For those of you who are allergic to shell food be mindful that your steak or chicken burrito will taste like sea food because they are using the same grill. They should use a separate gill for shell food.
