Opinions de Shooting Star Cafe Oakland
The food here is amazing! I’m always impressed by how much variety they have — from boba and crepes to ice cream, noodles, and fried rice. I’ve brought friends and family here, and it’s become a tradition to visit every year, especially late at night. Such a perfect spot for late-night cravings!
Got the baked chicken with red sauce. It was quite large and good value. Can't go wrong with a free drink although I felt the coffee was weak and warm not hot. It was hard to wave down our server. I wouldn't recommend this spot if you are in a hurry although the food was much better and larger than what I remembered in the past.
At the Oakland street fair, we came across Shooting Star’s booth and were immediately impressed. Their drinks were excellent—refreshing, balanced, and full of flavor. On the owner’s recommendation, we tried several of their Hong Kong–style dishes: fish roe fried rice, baked pork chop over rice, garlic choy, and salt-and-pepper chicken wings. Each dish was prepared well, flavorful, and satisfying. For dessert, we added the egg puff, black sticky rice with fresh mango, and mango gi gi—all of which were just as impressive. Shooting Star Café consistently delivers quality that sets it apart from other HK cafés in the Bay Area. It’s more than just a local favorite—it’s a true institution. -.
This place is great! Their menu is huge and their food tastes super fresh. Really good and big servings as well! Their drinks are also fantastic, though watch out for icy textures in their drinks. Besides that, really good place that's open late in case you wanna grab a bite! Check them out!
Surprisingly good!! Glad to have found an old school no fuss HK cafe that’s pretty much 24/7 open and have a never ending menu 😄 Coming from SF, the prices were insane. And taste was authentic! Highly recommend the braised beef lomein & wonton plate. So flavorful, beef tendon cut, and love the variety
It was already 9pm , everywhere else was close . We always order party trays from here for our office and for parities. Guests would ask us where we get our food. Since we never dine in before. We gave this place a try since we were in the area. We were skeptical in the beginning since Oakland crime rate was high. When we sat down , it was another story. Cops were also enjoying their milk tea in the room. Immediately, I no need to worry about safety. We ordered the special $48 for 3 plates ( 2 adults n 2 kids). , and we also added the wonton noodle soup. I have to mention about the portion. I didn’t expect such a huge portion at this price . It was a full plate , half chicken , Chinese broccoli, and tofu with bokchoi. The wonton noodle was as my kids favorite! The noodles texture was as good u can get! It was as firm n al Dante. Kids asked for dessert. We ordered the mango eggetts, n we added the extra too strawberry for $1.50 Definitely fulfilling and satisfying. Great service , great price for the food. Would def come back when I’m in the area. 😍
My everyday favorite Hong Kong Style Cafe, high quality, great food, lunch or dinner order comes with a drink and salad, bang for your buck at the same time great taste, downtown oakland you need to find parking on the street, there’s a mall parking ad well. Opens early and close late, I can’t say enough, best of the best in Oakland. Best spaghetti in Bay Area I have tried, the salad source is their secret, comes with all package order, my must stop by place every time I visit Bay Area, recommend Onion / Black Peppers Pork chop and Walnut Shrimp Salad, actually recommend everything. Never get enough.
Late night ,many choices...some of their dishes,Are the most ! In flavor and cost! I always stop by and order randomly! I'm glad to say ! They do not Let Me Down ! Items are hot and a welcomed comfort in a town that needs a Prayer! Thank you !
Shooting Star Café is one of those unique gems where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at any time of the day. I love that flexibility—it’s not often you can walk into a restaurant in the morning and order something like chicken and broccoli for breakfast (yes, I did exactly that, and it hit the spot!). The menu is broad enough to satisfy whatever craving you might have, whether it’s comfort food, a hearty meal, or something lighter. The environment is welcoming and has a fun, modern vibe that makes you want to stay a while. On top of that, the staff was very friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. Shooting Star Café is definitely a place I’d recommend if you’re in Oakland and want a casual spot with great food and great service.
Shooting Star Cafe is my go-to when I'm craving that classic Hong Kong cafe vibe - bright, bustling, and full of energy. You can always hear the sizzle from the kitchen and the clinking of teacups, which somehow makes the food taste even better. Service is fast, efficient, and no-nonsense - exactly what you expect from a busy cha chaan teng. Rice Rolls (Peanut, Hoisin, Hot Sauce): Soft, silky rolls with the perfect trio of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Baked Chicken Steak: Tender chicken baked in a creamy sauce -- ultimate comfort dish. Beef Fried Rice: Smoky wok hei flavor, well-seasoned, and generous with beef. Beef Rice Rolls: Fresh and springy, great texture contrast with the beef sirloin. Popcorn Chicken: Crispy, well-seasoned, and addictive -- perfect appetizer or snack. Fruits Sago Dessert: Light and refreshing with chewy sago pearls and juicy fruit pieces. Mango Sticky Rice with Coconut Milk: Sweet, creamy, and perfectly balanced - a comforting dessert. Hong Kong Milk Tea: Strong tea base with just the right sweetness, a must-have here. You can also order the hot one non sweetened. Overall a lively late-night spot with satisfying portions, great variety, and quick service - perfect for sharing plates with friends after a night out.
Ever since I moved nearby, I’ve begun exploring the local Chinese restaurants in oakland. One night, I decided to try food from a nearby place, and I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portions they offered for the price. I ordered salted fish and chicken fried rice, and the portions were large enough for two people to enjoy. As for the taste, I loved it! I will definitely be coming back to this restaurant more often to try the rest of the menu. I give it four stars.🍝🍜🍛
*1/11/2024 I tried the lunch special at Shooting Stars, and it was really worth the price. Just a heads up, though – the special deal is only for folks dining in at the restaurant. The soup of the day, probably chicken soup, was a nice surprise. It was super tasty without being too salty, and it went really well with the Hai Nan Style Chicken and Special Rice. The Hai Nan chicken was good, and the special rice had this cool coconut flavor that made the dish even more interesting. The Beef Chow Fun didn't let me down; it tasted just as good as I expected. The wok hay added a nice touch, making it a dish I can count on. For dessert, we went for the Hot Desserts with Taro and Yam Balls on a Grass Jelly Base. We thought it would be cold, but surprise, it was warm! It was okay, and the taro and yam balls weren't too squishy, but I wouldn't say it's a must-try. There might be better dessert options on the menu. *One thing to keep in mind is that they automatically add a service fee to your bill, so no need to worry about tipping separately. 9/22/2023 Craving some delicious beef chow fun, and Shooting Star is the first restaurant that comes to mind. We ordered the Beef With Tender Green Chow Fun and the Mini Egg Puffs with Fresh Strawberry, just like we used to. The fragrance of the chow fun is delightful, and it tastes amazing too! The egg puffs are as delicious as I remember from last time. No complaints about these two dishes! They are always my go-to choices at Shooting Star Cafe! 8/21/2023 The beef chow fun was decent, though a bit lacking in flavor even with added spicy sauce. The Mixed Fruit Crepe, on the other hand, was a delightful conclusion - sweet and refreshing. However, the Tako-Yaki disappointed with its overly wet texture and minimal octopus content. *Worth noting is that a 15% tip was automatically added to the bill. 7/11/2023 I recently discovered Shooting Star Cafe in Oakland while craving a late-night snack, and I must say it deserves a solid 4-star review. What drew us to this place was the fact that it's the only restaurant in the area that stays open until midnight. On our visit, we decided to try the Beef With Tender Green Chow Fun and the Mini Egg Puffs with Fresh Strawberry. Let me tell you, the Chow Fun was absolutely amazing! The flavors were outstanding, and every bite was a delightful explosion of taste. The combination of tender beef and perfectly cooked green chow fun noodles was a winning combination. The Mini Egg Puffs with Fresh Strawberry were also a treat. They were tasty and satisfying, providing a delightful contrast of flavors with the sweet strawberries.
Have worked near this establishment for a very long time, but haven't really tried their food. I think I've tried it once awhile back, but unable to recall the dish I've previously ordered. In any event, I ordered the Short Rib with Black Pepper Sauce lunch combo on June 01, 2023 and liked it. However, if i had the choice; i would prefer the ribs to be cooked longer so they'll be a little more dry. Nonetheless, the food was good. I would reorder it after I try more from their vast list on the menu. The "TO-GO" lunch combo came with entrée, rice and a small drink of choice. I chose the ice lemon tea. The "DINE-IN" lunch combo comes with the above PLUS Soup & Salad (according to their website). 06/06/23: Since I had a good experience last week, I'd thought I'll try it again. Today, I ordered the Hai Nan Style Chicken w/ Special Rice. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had in mind...but it was good enough where I finished it. The rice was soft and had some light seasoning. The chicken was a little colder than what I expected. The ginger sauce was pretty good also. I'm not going to stop trying this place out due to an order. I'll definitely try out other dishes in the near future. 👍
Our server was very attentive and nice. Rest of staff is nice, but don't understand simple requests. Asked for two cups of ice since I asked for ice water with a lot of ice but it was served to me with a few ice cubes. I requested additional salad dressing and I received nothing. Food was actually decent. Portions were satisfactory.
A decent spot for HK-style cravings in the Bay, but lacks authenticity Review Content: Shooting Star Cafe offers a variety of Hong Kong-style dishes that are somewhat hard to find in the Bay Area, but the execution is a bit hit-or-miss. • Clay Pot Rice: The flavor is good, but if you order takeout, don’t expect that signature crispy rice crust (guoba) at the bottom. It loses its texture in the container. • Chicken: The meat was very tender and flavorful, though there were quite a lot of small bone fragments to navigate. • Beef Brisket with Rice Rolls: The taste was acceptable, but the portion of beef was disappointing. • Sweet and Sour Pork: A bit too sweet for my preference; it becomes a little overwhelming after a few bites. • French Toast: Disappointing as it lacked the expected crispiness and fragrant buttery taste. • Coconut Sago: Just average. Summary: It’s a convenient spot that captures the "idea" of Hong Kong cafe food, but it still has a way to go before it feels truly authentic or "grounded." Good for a quick fix, but keep your expectations in check.
The service was reasonable. We didn't have to wait too long considering about 80% of the tables were full during the lunch hour. The price is average, leaning a bit on the high side. Presentation is pretty nice. Although we ordered pineapple fried rice and they said they ran out of pineapple rinds so they had to put it on a plate. Their beef/egg noodle was ok, but we got mostly cartilage and noodles, and not much meat.
