I been wanting to go here for years but my trips to San Francisco never aligned with their hours. I'm so glad I finally made it! I got the venison skewers for an appetizer and they were 10/10. Do an entree I got the bison steak. Everything was delicious and I really enjoyed the Hugh quality protein. The staff was great and service was fast.
My server handled an entire room during a busy lunchtime shift while keeping her cool! I opted for Tacos and was able to mix it up with 1 Pulled Bison and 2 Smoked Squash served with a fresh wild green salad. Wapepah’s blue corn bread is a beautiful grainy texture and pairs great with Warm Berry Pudding. Wait…. Don’t leave without getting Frybread! Its delicate crispy exterior is perfectly balanced with its soft warm freshness, topped with a buttery finish!
Totally unique flavors! I had the bison meatballs, which were accompanied by a delicious salad and the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. My SO got the salmon tostada, and we both had the tea to drink. For dessert, we split the blue corn cupcake. We saw this place on TikTok, and wanted to give it a try, and it exceeded our expectations! Kudos to Chef Crystal Wahpepah and her team!
Wow great food and drinks here. This place is unique, fresh and matches our taste pallette for good healthy food that is different than existing categories. There is lots of nicely spaced outdoor tables so was perfect. We had the maple prickly pear lemonade, strawberry sage hibiscus tea, mushroom pumpkin seed mole, smokes sweet potato tostada, potato wedges and Mayan chocolate amaranth cake. Would order each of these things again. The teas were great, not too sweet so exactly our style. The dishes were all flavorful and healthy with great presentation. Service was super welcoming and friendly from the minute we arrived until we were done. We found parking in the fruitvale mall lot that is just across the courtyard and seemed safe with a lot attendant. $3 for the first hour. Can't wait to come back again, particularly if we are riding past on the Bart and can hope off at fruitvale station. Wahpepah definitely deserves a James Beard award from our experience here.
Took my 11 & 13 kids to Wahpepah's Kitchen for an amazing lunch today. Heard about Crystal Wahpepah's story and the restaurant and had to come eat here and see it fir myself. Friendly service, inspiring atmosphere, and the food is amazing! - prickly pear limeade - blue corn bread with maple cream - red salmon dip ( which could be a delightful light meal by itself) - bison meatballs, berry sauce & sweet potatoes - fry bread taco with ground bison - pepita green molé wth beans and a salad It really is a special place. Everyone should go check it out. Support Native American/Indigenous cuisine, and food sovereignty. Bonus tip: take BART, is right across the street from the Fruitvale station.
We had a very lovely meal at this restaurant. I took a bite out of my bison taco before I took the picture. I really liked the blue corn tortilla and the bison. My son was with me and he’s vegetarian and there are two entree options for him… he got the pumpkin seed all day. Nice vibe and quick service. This was our first time here, and we parked in the BART parking lot after searching for street parking.
An absolute blessing - beautiful expressions and artfulness in food and interior design, Wahpepah's is delicious. All the ingredients are fresh, nourishing, and a joyful mix of modest and particularly flavorful. The surrounding space is vibrant and tucked away in an active courtyard next to the BART station. The parking garage was easy and safe. I'm glad we found this special place.
Really unique experience and you can tell the folks who run the place and work there are very caring. My favorite was the acorn pancake. I want to return to try more dishes.
Distinctive and delicious indigenous cuisine served in a warm, family-style setting. Everybody should try this place, I have never had food like this. Extremely fresh and flavorful.
The bison taco was good, can't say I can tell it was bison but the frybread is excellent - like the best version of chalupa bread. Good chili oil too. Taquitos taste pretty good, and the chokecherry soda is awesome. Acorn crepes have a unique nice texture that's awesome Very nice waitress, turns out it's a family business from the front of house to kitchen. They source from other Natives in the US - Awesome
This was such an amazing experience for the palette! My partner and I visited this afternoon for our anniversary lunch since we had been craving some indigenous foods and heard amazing reviews of Wahpepah's. We were not disappointed! The staff was friendly and the service was fast too! We were so excited for the food I almost forgot to take some photos lol Here we have the Bison Blue Corn Taco, their delicious Cornbread, and the Bison Meatball. We forgot to take photos of the Buffalo Sticks, the Berry Pudding Cornbread, and Mayan Chocolate Cookie! But believe me, they were so delicious, delicate and just the right amount of flavorful. We will definitely be coming back!
Glad my friend recommended this place, and happy to see one of the first ever Native American restaurants here in Oakland. I had the Cheyenne River Short Loin salad (Oakland Restaurant Week 2023 exclusive), a Salmon Tostada, a flavorful Deer Stick, an Acorn Crepe, and the Blueberry Hibiscus Tea -- all were really good. The bison in the salad could've been a bit more tender, but the overall dish was good. The blueberry vinaigrette and chokecherry sauce (I believe) were definitely highlights, and my friend liked the berry pudding he had too. I should got some Deer Sticks to go lol! Thanks to our sweet server Pierre for explaining all the dishes as well as the Native American origins of many of the ingredients. All the other staff encountered were friendly as well. Keep up the good work Crystal Wahpepah and team; I'll definitely be back!
I’ve been wanting to come to Wahpepah’s Kitchen for months; it did not disappoint! Everything was so flavorful and well cooked. The staff was very warm and helpful and the location was very accessible from BART and relaxing. I splurged and got the prickly pear limeade, deer sticks, wild native mushroom pumpkin seed mole, and chilled berry pudding. Will definitely be back! Would love to see a spot open in the city 🙏🏼
I’ve been wanting to try this place forever. It exceeded my expectations. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Here is what I ordered: 1. Elderberry Hibiscus Tea - great combination of sour and sweet. 2 Sweet potato Taquitos- perfectly cook and come with a variety of sauces. 3. Bison Fry Bread- beautifully prepared, flavorful and filling. 4. Blue Corn Mush - this way I could describe this is a blue corn pudding with fruit on top. The texture was new to me, but I really enjoyed it. It was not overly sweet. This was a lot of food so I took most of it home. Easily could’ve shared what I ordered with a friend. The place was packed when I went and I understand why. Very excited to go back and try more off of the menu. Must try if you are in the bay.
I love everything about Wahpepah's Kitchen. The food, service and atmosphere are great but what makes it special and unique are the clear objectives for her work. Don't just go there to eat, go there to learn. Crystal's movement is long overdue for all indigenous people. I only wish it was closer to my home but I always love supporting WK and sharing it with friends whenever I can.
Mvto! Loved our visit during a recent work trip to the East Bay area. Treated my colleagues and a few of my staff to lunch and we ordered every item on the menu. The staff paced every dish out well and provided extra context to their ingredients and story while being so friendly. We've been a big fan of Crystal and the Wahpepah family - it brings so much joy to see them in action. The food was so delicious that we chose not to eat dinner that night to savor the goodness that had satiated us!
This restaurant is unbelievably good! Chef Wahpepah gives Indigenous Native American cuisine the love it deserves. I went with four members of my family so I was able to sample a wide variety of the menu. I ordered the blue corn bison tacos and they were outstanding! The bison was melt in my mouth tender and perfectly spiced. The blue corn soft taco shells were thick and yet soft and smooth. Better than any soft taco shell I have ever had. One wonders why all soft tacos aren’t made with blue corn! I ordered the Elderberry sparkle with my meal and it was lovely, but after having a sip of the Huckleberry lemonade I immediately ordered another for myself. We ordered a side of fried potatoes for the table and they were perfectly fried. A thin lightly crunchy outside with soft inner potatoes. It speaks to the talent of the chef that such a simple side dish was also treated with careful attention. We will definitely return again!
The fact that this restaurant exists and Chef Wahpepah is able to share her culture through food makes this Indigenous heart so happy. We had the bison tostada, Kickapoo chili (mouth watering!), juicy and tender venison skewers and hot, comforting elderberry tea. Everything was lovely, the service included. If you’re in the area, I cannot recommend this place enough!
Wahpepah's Kitchen is a must go! The food is incredible and the service great. I expected a more formal dining experience, but really enjoyed sitting outside and ended up loving the casual environment combined with delicious food with a gorgeous presentation. It is pricy, but you do get what you pay for! And remember, ingredients such as bison and deer are expensive. I have now been twice and hope to go again the next time I am in Oakland! If you are taking an Uber, set the drop of point on E 12th street and make you way south through the shopping center.
Made sure to check out this lovely restaurant on a recent work trip. Everyone was very welcoming and the flavor profiles were unique. I especially loved the sweet potato tostada and the mushroom with pumpkin seed mole. Location was also very convenient just a few steps from Fruitvale station. Highly recommended!
Hot elderberry tea was comforting with a balanced sweetness. Blue corn waffle was so yummy, had a satisfying texture (toasted on outside and cakey inside). The cedar smoked sweet potato tostada was my favorite; the flavors and textures worked so well with every bite. The amount of thought/care put into the space, menu, staff, etc. is notable. They ensure that you feel very welcome and cozy.
THIS. Best food ever! In SO many ways. Everything was wonderful. Yes the prices are a little high, but not when you consider the love, spirit, and artisanship that goes into each one (not to mention the beautiful miracle of Indigenous sistas surviving genocidal trauma to achieve and then share this awesomeness). The portions are not huge but the quality more than makes up for this, and the food makes you feel so good that it is like you ate a much larger meal. Everyone needs to eat here at least once. The crucial role that food plays in connecting land and people, and the importance of Indigenous culture in this key truth, really comes through every flavor. Herbs and edible flowers are fresh and beautiful. Tiny wild mushrooms in the wild rice are like treasures of the land. The Indigenous wild mint tea tastes like nothing in the world, but the beautiful land you are standing on. Menu changes with the season, in harmony with the Earth. And everything is absolutely delicious. Most importantly, it is overtly, beautifully INDIGENOUS in every way, from the food to the decor to the awesome staff. Mahalo nui loa!!
My first taste of Native American food was absolutely worth the 7 hour drive from LA. Made a reservation with a specific seating request and they were very accommodating. The server was very patient and helpful with answering questions, explaining the dishes, and made a great recommendation as an alternate choice. The items i ordered were very much an experience in sweet & savory. Very different yet also somewhat reminiscent of food I already enjoy (Mexican, Central American, Korean). The food was served fairly quickly, hot, and had a simple but attractive presentation. I shamelessly finished both the appetizer and main myself and I left feeling comfortably full with plenty of energy for the rest of my drive. Hearty yet light. The parking garage of the plaza closes on weekends and street parking around it appears to be 1 hour only. Also, the patio overlooks the BART station so it might be a good alternative to driving.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed the catered version of this incredibly delicious fare presented by a talented team of staff. I look forward to visiting the brick and mortar location during my travels to try other offerings. The Bison and Salomon was just divine, the wild rice fritter was unexpectedly sweet and the cookies are crisp and rich with delightful chocolate chips. So thankful for this offering from the chef’s.
Had the fry bread and mushroom tacos with handmade blue corn tortillas. As a vegetarian I appreciated having several options to choose from and love the spirit of this restaurant.
Only steps away from the BART station and the food and people are incredible. We had a bison stew and the rabbit and mushroom stew. The wild rice in the rabbit stew was amazing. And be sure to try the frybread! The staff was so kind and welcoming! I can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!!!
I came here with my mom and daughter for lunch and truly enjoyed the experience. It is nestled inside of the Fruitvale Village where the Fruitvale BART station is, so parking was a challenge. This restaurant is small but it is clean and quiet. The menu has a lot of items that I'm going to call delicious looking. I'm also excited to go back to try some of the Bison dishes. They accept cash as well as card and the service was very professional and welcoming. The food service was pretty fast. The presentation on the plates was beautiful and the food was very enjoyable. I especially love the sauce that came with the deer sticks. The acorn crepe was also delicious! I do not recall seeing alcohol beverages but they do have three different teas that I can remember
Perfect service (fast, happy to chat about Kansas and Oklahoma) and ambience (outside under a huge, peaceful tree). Unreal food. So delicious, unique, colorful, and healthy. I especially loved that everything is naturally gluten free but the fry bread, and there are many vegan (dairy-free and egg-free) options. Everything was rich, complex, and nutritious. I wish there were more restaurants like this.
This was my first experience with Indigenous cuisine and I loved it! Everything we ordered was so nicely sourced and delicious. We had the bison meatballs with blueberries, deer sticks, mushroom pumpkin seed mole, cornbread, sweet potato tostada, pinto beans, and the blue corn mush dessert and the berry pudding. Most of the menu is gluten free, which is great for gluten sensitive people. Everything was nicely seasoned and well balanced. I love how healthy and fresh the food is, and my tummy was humming a happy tune all day! I highly recommend eating here and experiencing this amazing cuisine.
Yummy unique dishes & friendly service! Table favorites were the smoked rabbit tostada, wild rice fritters, fry bread, and mole. And not to be forgotten is the maple latte! All dishes were great to try but some lacked in flavor slightly. We made a reservation for Sunday lunch and were sat at a beautiful big wooden table!
There's beauty in simplicity. I love the esthetic choice of displaying jars of seeds on the shelves. Just like books, these seeds tell stories. I had not eaten deer in years. I was excited to try their deer sticks and they didn't disappoint. The dipping sauce was a nice touch. I appreciated the time they took to mark gluten free items. I had no issues of cross-contamination eating here but I'm also not as sensitive as others. I was thrilled to be able to eat a waffle in a restaurant. My husband said the blue corn bread was incredible!! The hominy was a lovely savory moment to balance out the sweet. It was different than the way I prepare hominy. I'll have to experiment in the future. I don't understand why more places don't offer refreshing non-alcoholic drinks. I could swim in the blackberry hibiscus tea. We also ordered the strawberry sumac limeade. Both were pleasing to the palate, perfect for warmer weather. We ended lunch with the Mayan amaranth chocolate cake. If you are obsessed with chocolate, don't skip. It was one of the best desserts I have ever eaten. Super rich and I couldn't believe it was gluten free. Can't wait to return. It was worth the 60 mile drive.
Amazing taste of Native American dishes, served up for either lunch or dinner! I’m a fan of the rabbit tostada. It serves one, and is quite flavorful. Also, try out the salmon dip for something a little bit warm, to start off. Bike parking is available by the bike station (FREE) or bike link lockers. You can also just BART there, as it’s a multi-development station w/other stores nearby
What a gem! The food was stellar and thoughtful. The service was kind and attentive. And what an absolute gift to have local indigenous food so beautifully prepared and presented.
One of the most sincere and memorable dining experiences I’ve had in the U.S. This restaurant doesn’t just serve food, it offers a cultural journey into the heart and heritage of Indigenous peoples. Every dish felt intentional, balanced, and deeply rooted in history and care. Chef Wahpepah, the owner, is not only preserving a legacy through her kitchen, but also offering it with warmth and generosity. The staff — especially the servers — were welcoming, attentive, and made the experience even more special. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a meaningful, grounded, and delicious experience.
This place was amazing! It was our first time trying authentic Native American Cuisine. I have never had bison before and it was so tender and juicy. First time tasting elder berry and that was a shock to my pallet. I would definitely come again when I’m in town. My only complaint was not having extra napkins with my food. Yes I could have asked but most places I eat they just offer extra napkins!
The food reminded me of home, so it was more than what I hoped for! The sweet potato hibiscus taquitos, bison tacos with handmade tortillas, and wild mint tea were all a wonderful balance of flavors!!! I can't wait to come back and try different dishes. I'm gluten intolerant so I was happy with all the GF choices! I felt cozy after my meal; it was like medicine for the soul! It's right by Fruitvale Station, but if you come from the street on the West side, go through the plaza and it's a bit hidden on the right corner end of the plaza!

Located right off bart, this space is convenient to get to. The food and service was wonderful although quite pricey. (The price is the only reason for 4 stars.) 2 apps, 2 entrees, 3 (non alcoholic) drinks was $130. The main entree of bison and potatoes was mostly salad for both. The bison and potatoes were delivious with each sauce. Other than that, I loved the food, the service and the atmosphere.
Good food - the fry bread was FANTASTIC, loved the cornbread w maple glaze - wish there was a bit more of the glaze cuz it got a little dry by the end. Liked the corn silk tea - very similar to the earthiness of brown rice green tea. Stew was very very rich, not much wild rice but plenty of bison. Lovely table set ups and plating.
The colors were striking for all the dishes! The blue cornbread with a maple cream sauce is a lovely side, and very similar to the blue corn cupcake we had for dessert, though that comes with huckleberries on top. 🦬 I opted for the bison meatballs with a trio of perfectly roasted Peruvian potatoes, bright turnip slaw, and a delicious berry sauce. I even had a berry in the middle of one of my meatballs! The side of heritage hominy, cooked in fat and flavored with sweet peppers, was also delicious and nourishing. I was glad to have leftovers of that. My friend enjoyed her unpictured venison & hominy soup as well. 🍋 For drinks I had the lemon mint iced tea, and my friend had the blackberry sage. Lightly sweetened, the lemon came through beautifully. My friend appreciated the strength of the sage. 🍪 I think I liked the hominy best, but the pine nut and lavender cookie was a very close second. Complaints? The meatballs and the blue corn cakes were dry. But I enjoyed their flavor regardless. This space will be great in warmer weather with its large patio seating as well.
Wahpepah's Kitchen truly stood out during my recent visit. The attentive service added a warm touch to the already inviting atmosphere. The bison meatballs and potato wedges were a culinary delight, with each bite bursting with rich flavors that showcased the kitchen's expertise. The elderberry drinks were a refreshing and unique choice, perfectly complementing the savory dishes. However, it's worth noting that the restroom is not on the premises and requires a short trip outside to a shared space. While a minor inconvenience, the overall dining experience at Wahpepah's Kitchen exceeded expectations, making it a memorable culinary adventure.
This is a family-owned restaurant and the owner/chef's way of preparing and serving food is deeply rooted in her Native American heritage. All of the employees are friendly and attentive. Beautiful murals are painted inside. There's indoor and outdoor seating available. We ordered Bison Meatballs, Bison Tacos, Wild Native Mushroom Pumpkin Seed Mole, and Sweet Potato & Salmon Tostada. The food is fresh and you don't feel stuffed when you're done. Overall, it was a great experince. Prices are a little high but it's worth checking out.

The food was very average. I expected to taste some new flavours profiles or something different as they portray themselves to be this unique Native American restaurant, but I was very disappointed. I also found a hair in my 22 dollars salad, which was really disgusting. I won’t come here again as I hate places that try to be pretentious and have extremely high prices just to find hair in your food.
