Opinions de Butler's Flat Port Washington
Good food at market prices. Saves me a trip to Cape Cod when im craving fried clams or shrimp. Fair warning, bring sunscreen if you go on a sunny day. There is maybe 8 tables with umbrella shade and another 5 tables with out it so you are going to be in the blazing sun.
A real hidden gem on Long Island's North shore. The trip out to Butler's might be too long for some people but those who do venture through a scenic tour of Port Washington will be glad they did. BF's is usually busy but not packed. The seating is first come, first served so there is a chance that you won't get a seat right away. The location is amazing, it's the perfect place to unwind and grab a beer or some great seafood and watch the boats chug along in Manhasset Bay. We are usually there 2 times a month during the season. Chris, the owner is a great guy who always gives customers the attention they deserve. The parking lot can get crowded in the summer as it's also part of the yacht club. Enjoy the lobster roll and the fried whole belly clams with a cold 'Gansett and you are sitting pretty!
Mid-Sunday afternoon, not crowded. Food very good. Thanks to Abby who helped us with our trays and who was welcoming and kind.
Super fresh seafood, great views! Truly enjoyed the Fried Flounder sandwich and Fried Clam platter + fries and slaw. Friendly staff who also sanitized each table top after turnover. Highly recommend.
A beautiful location for a summer lunch! The view is amazing and the view is very chilled out. Staff is very friendly! I tried the Boston Clam Chowder and the lobster roll. Both were fresh and flavorful. I highly recommend this place. There is parking available
Decent lobster rolls. Good variety of food options. Outdoor casual dining by the water. Place your order at the service window, have a seat, wait for your name to be called then enjoy the delicious food.
Probably the best lobster roll I've ever had! The fries were nice and salty. The roll itself was perfectly buttered and toasted. The best part was the lobster. I start drooling just thinking about it. Super fresh and super chunky! I recommend everyone to go!
Best Lobster Rolls on the North Shore, great views of the bay. Staff on top of their game so the wait goes quickly.
Great food for lunch or dinner for anyone out on Long Island Sound. Grilled Chicken Sandwich is consistently one of the best you will taste at any price. Lobster roll is very good and less expensive than other boat-in eateries.
Best little clam shack in the Northeast. Friendly staff, plenty of places to sit, clean. You can't beat the view and it's such a quiet peaceful location. The food is delicious as well. I recommend anyone this place looking for low key with a view.
Delicious food beautiful view from all outdoor tables of the harbor. This is a clam shack not an indoor restaurant. Orders are taken by one window and your name is called when your order is ready. Highly recommend will return many times.
We live in Brooklyn now but I grew up out on the Island and we used to dock our boat at the Capri. I remembered it as a beautiful spot. On a friend's tip, decided to trip out on a beautiful afternoon to Butler's. A wonderful experience. Virtually no wait and no hassle, very rare for a gorgeous waterfront setting with spectacular sunsets. Totally fair prices and legit first rate Down East seafood, New England Style. Got some beers and rose (Naragansett and Bridge Lane Rose), Stuffed Quahogs, Lobster Rolls (come with North Fork chips and slaw) and awesome ice cream sandwiches, locally made. Hands down the current contender for best lobster roll in the Tri-State area; huge chunks of tail and knuckle meat lightly dressed on a pitch perfect toasted open top potato bun, priced appropriately and fairly at $24. On a beautiful afternoon, the experience of casual waterfront eats in this gorgeous setting can not be beat.
Went on Thursday the lobster 🦞 rolls are excellent staff always friendly atmosphere terrific.
Weather was nice. Food was delicious especially lobster roll and clam Chowder
Great stop if by Boat. Vhf channel 9 to dock and dine with safe harbor marina. Had the flounder sandwich and it was tasty. My Family had the fried shrimp and loved it. Also the hambuger was good for the kids.
Butler's Flat has the best lobster rolls, and the staff that works there is so nice. My husband and I go there by boat and we call our order in, they always have it ready right away.. The scenery is beautiful and like I said the lobster rolls are the best I've had in Port Washington and on the North Shore so far. AAAANNNDDDDD let's not forget their spicy shrimp rolls, wow!! they have a great kick to them.
If you go when it's quiet for early bird dinner it's amazing. Beautiful view and great dockside service.
Efficient and friendly service with a smile. All outdoor seating with a nice views of the marinas. We ordered crab roll and shrimp taco with quahogs. As my husband remarked, it’s all crab! Real deal. Yum. Shrimp tacos perfect portion when paired with another side (quahog in my case). Crisp fresh shrimp. Great sauce. V enjoyable find. Can’t wait to come back.
Butler's Flat Clam Shack is a cozy spot known for its fresh seafood and casual vibe. The clam chowder is rich and creamy, and their fried clams are a must-try—crispy and full of flavor! The outdoor seating offers a lovely view, making it a great place to enjoy a meal on a sunny day. If you're in the area and craving some delicious seafood, Butler's Flat Clam Shack is definitely worth a visit!
Was in the neighborhood and figured since I was near the shore to have lunch at a place with ambience. Butler's Flat Clam Shack was ambience along with good food. Fortunately, there wasn't too long of a line when I got there though ordering took a bit long as there is just one person at the window taking orders. Upon initial inspection, the lobster roll looked really small for the price but it was absolutely delicious and actually pretty filling. My kids got grilled cheese and the kids burger which they were fine with. The clam chowder was good, nothing to write home about yet we finished it. Nothing beats eating fresh seafood with a water view and the staff were all kind and attentive. I saw one asking a couple of women who had finished their lunch and were just chatting to politely let someone else have the table which made sense since there were people literally standing around with trays of food and nowhere to sit. This tells you how good the food is. I will definitely be back to try something else from the menu.
Just about the best seafood shack in Long Island. Theres usually a pretty big line but it is WORTH IT!
It was a very busy night but the food was well worth waiting for. The hot lobster roll, shrimp tacos, fried scallops and clam chowder were exceptional!
I had a lobster roll with fries. Overall it was good. The roll could of been a little bigger for the price. Outside seating has a great view of the bay. I would come back again.
Butler's Flat is a great hidden gem of Port Washington. It's only open during the warm season, and the food is always phenomenal. I've been going here for years, less so recently, but back in the day I used to get it almost daily for lunch when I worked at the marina. I really love the location, and even though there aren't too many menu items, the items they do have are all very good, my favorites being the burger or the grilled chicken sandwich. I've heard the lobster rolls are good, but I'm not much of a seafood guy. I highly recommend!
Quick service and great food! Id recommend the shrimp platter and coleslaw! The fish tacos were good too but needed more sauce. It was our first time here so would def ask for more sauce next time. When we got there, there was no line. But as soon as we got our food a line of ~10-15 people appeared out of no where. The business asks that you place your order first then grab a table to keep things flowing smoothly, so kindly keep that in mind!
A great Burger and view. It's a very simple yet well run operation. We waited in line to order for about 20 minutes, then we were allowed to grab a table. I only eat gluten free, there are not any gluten free options, except a hamburger without a bun which is alright because the Burger was good and cooked truly medium. This a great quick eat with family or friends, and a beautiful view on a sunny or cloudy day. Enjoy!
One of the few places on the Western North Shore of Nassau where you can sit on the dock and watch the day turn into evening while the boats rock in the harbor. This is, though, a "Shack". You order at a window and they call your name to pick up the order. For the people who say NYC prices - yes, they are, but NYC takeout lobster roll prices, not sit down restaurant prices. On a weekend night the lines can be long. Order your second glass of wine with the original order so you don't have to wait in line again.
Amazing Amazing Amazing. Best seafood in town 100%. The baked flounder is locally sourced from Montauk and it is the best flounder I have ever had in my life!!! Fried clams are also really really good. Spent a week in Port Washington and Got obsessed and had lunch and dinner for a week every day!
We loved it. Hidden gem in Port Washington. Staff is pleasant when approached, food is on point. View is amazing, deck right on the water. Seemed family friendly, very chill cool environment. Staff followed mask wearing rules and tables were wiped down. Loved it, thank you. We frequent the area often, we'll visit again.
Went there with a party of 8 on a late Saturday afternoon and the staff were very kind to us. They managed to seat us within a couple of minutes right by the water which was amazing. The food there was really good too, it is pricey but the atmosphere around you makes it worth it. I highly recommend the fried scallops platter, they’re crispy on the outside and the inside melts in your mouth like butter. The fried clams and the clam chowder were great as well. The shrimp tacos are a nice simple snack to get and a safe option for anyone who’s maybe not into seafood. I would say that the lobster rolls maybe needed a bit of seasoning on it or a sauce on it but the lobster itself is quality. I would definitely come here again, it’s a great place to bring your friends and family!
Great spot to get a lobster roll. Crowded at times with a line to order, but get a table by the time your food is ready. Some umbrella coverage for the tables but can get hot.
Been coming here for years, this is as good as it gets. Lobsters rolls are of superb quality and generously packed with fresh tasting lobster. Other dishes and ingredients are of equal high quality. Service is friendly and well organized. Ambiance is phenomenal. Dog friendly. Highly recommend!
Great food, and GREAT staff. Yusuf and Abby, and the whole crew, are a great team! The Hogs are why I’m writing this; End of season I bulk order, uncooked which I freeze, to carry me through the winter! Great fried WHOLE belly clams, scallops, lest we forget the lobster rolls and fries! See you next year!
This has been one of my favourite seafood spots for over a decade. Everytime I visit NY, I have to go to the Butler's Flat to satisfy my crave for their scallop roll, which by far is the BEST! I have also observed the evolution/upgrade of their amenities and decor over the years. The piece which remains priceless and unbeatable is the view of the port. On a sunny day, it is picture perfect lovely.
Great outdoor clam shack. Great menu selection. the stuffed quohog and new England clam chowder are great starters. The lobster roll was great as were the fried belly claws, and fried flounder platters. Decent selection of beers. The outdoor seating was very pleasant. Nice friendly service. Worth a return visit.
Come for the lobster roll stay for the fries the beers and the view this little clam shack that features lobster rolls is a fun Summer venue that is open mid May through September. They even have ice cream sandwiches for dessert. It is a fun place to go for lunch or dinner the menu is the same. They even have platters for people who don’t want sandwiches. The lobster meat has no mayo on it and hotdog are pretty decent. This is close to my house so when we have time we like to come here.
Went here on a sunday afternoon and all I can say is WOW! It was gorgeous out there! I ordered the Salad with Lobster and Shrimp Cocktail and it was good! It was a little bit on the pricey side but you're literally paying for the ambiance too. Make sure to come early as they ran out of the clams when we went there!
This is a very cool spot especially to pick up some lobster rolls by the water. The view is amazing when the sun is setting, The food is really good, plenty of parking as it shares the lot with the marina. The outdoor patio is constantly being cleaned by staff. The cook and cashier are extremely helpful. Butler flat post where the seafood comes from. The prices are right there plus they have a drink menu. I think I did well with the pictures but I’m sure you’ll be happy eating here. Enjoy PS yes they have a kids menu and bathroom
The most amazing hidden gem for seafood fast casual. Open seasonal, beautiful scenery, small intimate outdoor seating, and everything is fresh. The burgers, fish sandwiches, fish tacos, the most amazing lobster rolls..... Everything is great. They also have a decent beer menu. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Fantastic! A no nonsense lobster roll, not one made with unnecessary filler; just delicious! Great views of marina and Manhasset Harbor. Eclectic summer beer selection with some nice specialty sodas as well. The fries are first rate. Give the place a go, you can't go wrong. No really, get there this summer.
Good food, but a little pricey for a limited menu walk up restaurant. BUT, it IS on the water with a nice view and great staff, so I think it's worth the extra $$. No liquor, but they do have a nice beer and wine selection. And they are dog friendly!
Great seafood! Some of the fish is local. The ambience is lovely sitting on the dock. Of course it's a little pricier as most seafood places are but it's worth it. Call or check their website first because we have gone before when they are supposed to be open according to google and they aren't.
Excellent place to have some fried seafood and lobster rolls. Good quality is okay, and pricy. The clam chowder was a bit sour. Your are basically paying for the gorgeous view. Outdoor seating only.
Food was actually pretty good but my only gripe was that their were no cocktails and that we felt rushed due to people waiting on seating. The view was awesome and the crab sandwich was actually better then the lobster roll. Cool place to visit if you in the area. Nice hidden gem.
Fantastic views. Not too crowded. The beer selection is a bit more basic this year. The lobster roll tasted great, but it is small for the price. I wish they had more non fry options for fish.
My wife loves the lobster rolls. I don't eat fish. but the hamburgers are pretty good. I love eating outside on the water overlooking Safe Harbor Capri where I used to keep my boat when it was Capri Marina.
Not a seafood restaurant. It is fast food (seafood), mostly everything is fried. On the water, Safe Harbor Marina. Pricey of course. Long wait. Food is average. Getting a seat or table is a competition and stressful. You feel rushed out because a girl/waitress is hovering over the tables over you trying to see every 10 minutes to see when you are going to leave to sit the next group of people waiting on the long line. Only beer and wine, no real drinks. Closes early (8pm). Final conclusion, you pay almost $100 for 2 and you feel rushed out.
Found their fish options to be rather bland. The lobster roll was very good - flavorful and juicy. The clam chowder didn't have too much flavor either. All seating is outdoors. They have a handful of tables with umbrellas for shade, so plan accordingly. Funny expect friendly service and you won't be too disappointed.
Great restaurant on the shore. Food was pretty good. My group got burgers, clam chowder, crab roll, and fried shrimp. The burgers and fried shrimp were average, but the crab roll was delicious. Wouldn't recommend the chowder. The location is right along the pier and has a great view of the water. A bit overpriced for what it is, but definitely not a bad place to stop by on a nice day out. The craft beers they have are amazing on a hot day.
Forgot to take pics, was too hungry! Had a lobster roll, baked scallop platter and a kids cheeseburger, food was good not great. Order at the counter, grab a seat and wait for them to call your name while you enjoy your view of the water. Prices are fair, portions are small, gets a little hot sitting on the dock mid afternoon.
It's good for summer weekend lunch especially if you're craving for lobster rolls. Outdoor seating by the water which is nice and relaxing. 😎 Lines could get long for a weekend lunch and they have a limited number of seating. The first time we went it took some time but for the second time we went after lunch peak and could find seats easily.
Food is great, although I wish they had more non-fried options. They have good clams so I’d love a baked clam dish instead of fried clams. And the location and vibe is wonderful but it’s oversubscribed so it can be a little stressful getting a table and even though you’re supposed to order before getting seated that rule is observed in the breach and lots of people try to mark tables with their belongings and then you’re the jerk if you try to take the table because they haven’t ordered yet. I love the concept but they could double the number of tables and still probably wouldn’t be full.
Beautiful view, very nice and relaxing. You have to order on the counter and then after you order you can take a seat. Some people try to grab seats/chair before ordering food, which isn’t fair to the people who already ordered. The lobster and shrimp rolls were yummy! Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall would definitely come again!
Really enjoyed our visit to Butler’s Flat Clam Shack! The lobster roll and crab roll were both fresh, flavorful, and paired perfectly with a cold beer. Just a note—they don’t offer raw seafood, so no shrimp cocktail, oysters, or littlenecks on the menu. I was hoping for some raw options, but the cooked dishes definitely made up for it. Also, be aware of their setup: you need to order before sitting, and seating is time-limited. Great spot for casual seafood with a nice waterside vibe!
Calm environment and a nice view overlooking Manhasset Bay! We went for lunch during a weekend visit at Port Washington. Neat and clean outdoor seatings for a ‘shack’ and food was not bad. We ordered the Clam Chowders which was meh, Lobster Roll was okay, Sea Scallops and Whole Belly Clams was good. 3 stars on food and extra star for the vibe & view.
Updated review: If you go after rush hour (lunch), you will find a table, no problem! I do think you are paying for the scenic view by the water which is quite nice. To have lunch by the boats is very picturesque. High chairs for babies available. They don’t let you reserve tables until you order, which is good and prevents people from hogging seats. Great spot by the water. A (not so) well kept secret. Terrific lobster rolls and fries. They have other foods too like fried oysters, tacos, etc. Lobster from Maine. Extensive beer and drink selection. I wish this place had more umbrellas so that patrons wouldn’t have to sit in the sun. We ended up sharing a table with strangers which wasn’t bad. Food was delicious but pricey. Came on a weekday. Plenty of parking.
Quaint seaside views of Port Washington from this Seafood "shack". Casual dining and reasonably priced menu. Beers and sodas are plenty. Desserts are few, just two options. Come for the seafood and to enjoy the beautiful outdoor seating. Order first then you get seated by a staff member. Table sharing is possible if they are very busy. Must try the NE Clam Chowder, Lobster Roll, and Baked Sea Scallops platter, served with farro and vegetables.
Friendly service, excellent lobster roll and the fries are also low-key fantastic. The tacos needed a bit more zing to them but were nicely fried. The chowder wasn't quite up to new england levels and was probably a miss on a sweltering day, but was otherwise fine. We arrived just before a huge line formed which was nice but I think they'd benefit from having more tables with umbrellas to shield from the sun.
Fish tacos were amazing. The shrimp platter was a little disappointing and a little too pricy for what it is. The fries could be better. But they have a large selection of IPAs. I would have gave them four stars but most of the tables lack shade which is not so good on a hot day.
The lobster roll was a bit of disappointment. I just don’t understand warms roll with ice 🧊 cold lobster on top. I think it should be specified it’s served cold for the price. To me waste of a lobster and better off taking it home cooking it up with some linguini.
Shack is full of nice hard working people but the line on weekends and sometimes week days, is more than twenty groups long , making the wait not worth it at all. Their popularity is too much for a little hut by the pool.
Nice location and view. Service good. Very crowded on Sunday afternoon. Nice young lady kept an eye out and lead us to a free table. Chicken sandwich just ok. Lobster roll very good, but for $28, you would think they would give special mayo, pickle and Cole slaw. Nothing special and Somewhat disappointing.
Nothing Special. Had the impossible burger, cheese not melted, lettuce was mushy. Tasted....no better than something I'd eat at home. My daughter had a cheeseburger, bun was burnt, burger was well cooked. Wife had the spicy shrimp roll. It was good, very small for 20 bucks but good. I understand the price since we by the water, but WOW...the pictu6on line vs what u get...disappointing. Clam chowder was delicious.
Nice view, clean bathroom, but taste and quantity of food were bad. I tried spicy shrimp sandwich and fish taco. Bread and vegetables looked fresh but I didn't taste any sauce. Kitchen staff seemed like high school or college student. Maybe that's why..
nice food. they didn’t let us open the umbrellas because it was windy however just a light breeze. light enough to keep you overheated and uncomfortable while eating. the sun beating down on my family really made the dinner amazing! the waiters showed no remorse at all and were honestly very rude about the umbrellas.
The lady taking our order was not a happy person, such an unhappy attitude. It's going to be a long, long summer for you dear, if you keep that attitude up! Lighten up and smile! This left a rather disappointing experience for me. The seating people were very curtious. The food was good and the scenery, outstanding.
horrible wait time 45 min for a family of 5 that took them 25 min to order order their food we left to Louies
The cashier was slouching over the cash register when we got there, didn’t welcome us or even say hello; a more miserable woman than her does not exist anywhere in the world. Staff in general were somehow under qualified to work at a shack. The prices are also outrageous for the little quantity they provide in each dish. Extremely high prices are for the nice view. It’s also self service, so you go get your own food and clean your own table, so I’m struggling to find anything that justifies the high prices. Food was mediocre, but the shrimps tasted funky. Go anywhere else.
First time I was there 25 minutes to wait to order another 20 minutes for food. The second time I was there there was only two people in front of me when I got to order they told me they paused ordering and then when they unpause ordering three minutes later the line was long where I would have to wait another 25 minutes. They purposely look like they’re busy and not The food is subpar.
I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. I came with my child on a hot summer day, and we were seated outside under the sun. When I politely asked for a sun umbrella, the staff refused, claiming it was too windy—even though there was no wind at all. My child was visibly overheating and almost fainted from the heat, yet the staff showed no concern or willingness to help, even though they were just five minutes away from opening. Their lack of basic customer care and empathy is unacceptable.
